the Fighting Spirit
In a world that seems increasingly sophisticated, in which the survivalist instincts of eons past is thought to have grown distant, Boston photographer Ian Travis Barnard can’t help but notice the fight that remains within us all. It’s a fighting spirit exemplified inside the boxing ring, says
Barnard, who has for a decade steadily documented the personalities, talent, and motivation driving New England’s pugilist scene. “People inspire me, but especially bodies in motion,” says Barnard. “The human body is an incredible showcase of power and grace.” This photograph captures

the moment mixed martial arts fighter Sean Soriano defeated Lee Metcalf at the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. “Soriano had just dropped his opponent with a monster haymaker, and a split second [later] he was launching himself onto the side of the cage. I did my
best to stick with the action. My dad [photographer Jeremy Barnard] always told me the key is just ‘F8 [a camera sensor] and be there.’” Though Barnard is entranced by athletes possessing powerful physical energy (he’s a cherished photographer at the Boston Ballet, as well),
our human instinct for battle does not escape his notice. “The battle to find a sense of self amongst the chaos is the true fight these days,” he says. “I view things like mixed martial arts as a more pure form of conflict. The fighting cage offers an answer every time.” iantravisbarnard.com

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF
While Boston loves a Winner (who doesn’t?), we adore an underdog. red sox superstar David ortiz is both—a 10-time all-star and three-time World series champ who achieved such astronomical success by surpassing expectations. We are honored to showcase him as our cover star (page 78) for our annual men’s issue. Writer Michael hurley takes us inside the compelling, sometimes startling, story of his rise and impending retirement. his natural-born talents, charisma, generosity, and passion for Boston are qualities that have served him—and the city—well. Passion for our city makes up the core of our mission at Boston Common. We tend to focus on folks who excel in
their chosen paths, but we work hard to dig up and spotlight those movers and shakers who also give back and give a damn. sometimes that comes in the form of God-given gifts (as with jazz prodigy Grace Kelly, page 46) and the joy we derive from them. other times, it’s the inspiration from someone with a special strain of courage—like business tycoon alex Wayman, who spends his off-hours raising money to help cure kidney disease (page 52), or events planner Billy evers, who quit a high-profile job to embrace a different approach to life (page 93). these are our city’s fighters and champions. We hope you get to know them on our pages and in real, 3-D living. as for me, i’ve enjoyed a grand time getting to know
power couple Bill and Giuliana rancic, who will lend their support by hosting the UnMask Cancer gala on october 22 at the Mandarin oriental Boston alongside Jessica and sam slater (above right). this is the third annual bash, which is presented by the herb Chambers Companies. i also recently had the pleasure of catching the atlantic White shark Conservancy research team in action, tracking and protecting sharks (and us!) along the new england coast, thanks to a wonderful private, eco-tourist boat charter service created by the Chatham Bars inn. and of course, an enormous highlight of the season will be toasting David ortiz at our cover party. Baseball caps off, Mr. ortiz. thank you for giving a damn.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
As New eNglANd’s lAte fAll weAther coNtiNues to light up the landscape, our social calendar is filled with many A-list events around the city. we kicked off the season with roche Bobois, and celebrated “french Art de Vivre” with fashion by Neiman Marcus and wines by gerard Bertrand. we cohosted a reception showcasing urban living and local cuisine with woodmeister Master Builders at their hip, cutting-edge location in the south end, and toasted the Boston design center on its 30th anniversary. Now, i’m looking forward to attending the unMask cancer gala at the Mandarin oriental and the ultimate tailgate party, which benefits lovin’ spoonfuls—this year, star chef Jamie Bissonnette will receive the thomas M. Menino Award for leadership. speaking of leadership, this issue celebrates Boston’s forefront men, and tracks the who, what, when, and where of their inspirations, achievements, passions, and lives. None more so than cover star david ortiz. few men can have an effect on a city the way Big papi has had on Boston over his past 14 seasons with the red sox. from the very beginning, he won fans all across the city, from little league players to top business leaders. You just can’t help it! everyone loves Big papi… And not just for his many on-field records and achievements—ortiz really has a way of connecting with people, and his passion for this city is infectious. so, on the eve of his retirement from professional baseball, a shout-out to one of Boston’s true heroes: david, from all of us at Boston Common and the city at large, thank you for all the unforgettable moments that will stay with us for a lifetime.

TAKE WHAT’S YOURS! File a claim and collect your cash.
STILL HAVE QUESTIONS? Let’s clear things up What is Unclaimed Property? Unclaimed Property is any fnancial asset (not including land or real estate) that has gone without customer-generated activity for an extended period of time.
Is this going to cost me money? No, this is a public service provided for FREE by the Ofce of the State Treasurer. There is no time limit to fle a claim, and all funds earn interest until claimed.
Examples include: » Savings and checking accounts » Unpaid wages or commissions » Uncashed insurance proceeds » Stocks, underlying shares or uncashed dividends » Customer deposits or overpayments » Certifcates of deposit » Credit balances and refunds » Money orders » Life insurance policies » Uncashed beneft checks » Accounts payable checks
Why does the state have my money in the frst place? Property becomes unclaimed when the asset holder is unable to contact the asset owner for three years (or ffteen years for traveler’s checks). The law requires business entities and others to review and turn over all unclaimed assets in their possession to the State on an annual basis. So... What’s the catch? Believe it or not, there isn’t one! Returning unclaimed property is a FREE service that every state provides. Helping you recover lost assets is our only goal. For us, money in your pocket is a job well done.

Of all the praise lavished on late adventure-skier Doug Coombs in Robert Cocuzzo’s new book, one quote, from Jackson Hole ski authority Howie Henderson, stands out: “The fluidity, the grace, the style, the effortless route-finding, the incredible angles, the easy athleticism... Doug Coombs is simply so damn good that seeing him ski changes your whole life.” It’s an impression whose tone—of admiration, of awe, of privilege to have known the man and watched him ski—echoes in increasing pitch throughout Tracking the Wild Coomba: The Life of Legendary Skier Doug Coombs (Mountaineers Books), a biography-cum-adventure tale-cum-ode published earlier this year to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Coombs’s death, at the age of 48. As Cocuzzo, himself an avid skier, describes speaking to Coombs’s friends, family members, and acquaintances, the book unfolds as both a chronicle of Coombs’s on-mountain pursuits and an attempt to understand what drove the life of the globetrotting, slope-conquering man often called the greatest skier of all time. Cocuzzo, the 30-year-old editor of Nantucket’s N
“DOUG COOMBS IS SIMPLY SO DAMN GOOD THAT SEEING HIM SKI CHANGES YOUR WHOLE LIFE.” —howie henderson
The supernatural: Skier Doug Coombs’s talent was such that it was as if he had “developed a symbiotic relationship with the mountains,” says biographer Robert Cocuzzo, “that he was working in partnership with them.” A childhood friend remembers Coombs as seeming “like a natural mountain creature, like a bull elk, born to roam the mountain edges.”

magazine (and a contributing writer to Boston Common), first came to Coombs in the ski movies he would watch with his friends in his parents’ basement growing up. Amazed at Coombs’s ability and ease on treacherous terrain—often, terrain that had never been skied before—Cocuzzo says he was also impressed with Coombs’s unassuming nature in interviews and videos. “I was drawn to the fact that he was a humble hero,” he says, that a man of such astronomical talent carried not a hint of ego. To find out what he did carry, the writer decided he needed to step into Coombs’s boots. The book recounts Cocuzzo’s journey to ski where Coombs had skied—Jackson Hole, Alaska’s backcountry, the French Alps—to the slopes, ridges, and gullies where Coombs claimed his first descents and made his name. At first, what he found were similarities to his own path: Cocuzzo grew up in Arlington, less than 10 miles from Coombs’s native Bedford; both learned to ski at Nashoba Valley, a 240-foot hill in Westford; both moved to, and ultimately away from, Jackson Hole. From there, says Cocuzzo, “His life became this roadmap for me to follow.” He followed Coombs’s trail all the way to its end, in La Grave, France, where, after more than three decades of frontier skiing, Coombs succumbed to the mountains in the shadow of La Meije, a peak 13,000 feet taller than Nashoba Valley. Following the path of the world’s finest skier, says Cocuzzo, taught him more than routes and angles. From Coombs, he says, “I learned about the power of the human spirit.” Cocuzzo speaks about Tracking the Wild Coomba at TEDxBeaconStreet on November 20 and the Harvard COOP on November 30. mountaineersbooks.org; robcocuzzo.com

amazing grace! from child prodigy to international virtuoso, jazz star grace elly is on the rise. by Mia Zarrella
Jazz saxophonist Grace Kelly’s meteoric rise is best told by the numbers. The Brookline native and Berklee College of Music graduate is only 24 years old, yet she excels in not one but five careers, as musician, singer, songwriter, arranger, and composer. She has headlined 700 concerts, including one with Wynton Marsalis and another at Carnegie Hall. She has played in 30 countries and recorded 10 albums. Her future? Endless—no number for that… You started performing at 10 years old? “I progressed really fast. Six weeks after I picked up my first saxophone, I was already learning jazz standards. I recorded my first album at 12.” What’s your musical style? “It’s the type of jazz that celebrates improvisation but also very much connects to the audience, even to the people who don’t like jazz.”
Tell us about your tenth album, Trying To Figure It Out. “There have been a lot of ups and downs the last couple of years in my musical career, so I decided to make an [album about] that journey. The beginning starts in much more of a dark place and every track grows more toward redemption and light.” Kelly will perform in Rockport on November 4 and in Natick on December 3. gracekellymusic.com

STRAIGHT SHOT Alex Wayman had it all going on: sterling Georgetown senior, college baseball star… a recruiter’s dream. Then, one morning, he woke up unable to move. “I was so scared,” he says. Rightly so. Later that day, Wayman was diagnosed with a blockage in his kidney. It was clear to him then that he had to redesign his life—quit drinking, eat healthy, exercise, the works—in order to maintain his health. “I was a 22-year-old college student thinking about a career on Wall Street,” he says. “I thought I was invincible. This forced me to adjust my outlook.” Now the managing director of a Boston investment-banking firm, Wayman is also a passionate board member of the National Kidney Foundation. Eager to break fundraising records and raise awareness, he founded the first-of-its-kind National Kidney Foundation Golf Classic at the exclusive Boston Golf Club. “We keep the event small, with 23 or 24 foursomes, caddies, and great prizes,” he says. (The “prizes” he speaks of range from BMWs to jet cards, with the Grand Prize being a trip to the NKF Golf Classic National Finals, in Pebble Beach.) Though the tournament is not until spring, Wayman is pounding the pavement now, offering informational sessions on behalf of NKF. Expect to see him October 16 at the Boston Kidney Walk at Canal Park in Cambridge. “I will do whatever it takes,” he says, “to make a difference.” nkfgolfclassic.com

As it moves into its middle teens, blue chip art fair Art Basel Miami Beach’s position in the global art world has never been higher. “Every show is marked by the high quality of galleries participating,” says Art Basel’s Director Americas, Noah Horowitz. “However, this year also affords an opportunity to look back at the show’s past 15 years and its tremendous impact on Miami and international engagement with the art scenes across the Americas.” Beginning with by-invitation-only VIP events on November 30—which bring out major-league collectors—and opening to the public on December 1, ABMB will bring together 270 galleries from 30 countries. The five-day fest also anticipates more than 77,000 visitors, including the usual boldfaced names (with bank accounts to match), such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Tommy Hilfiger, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. As the fair has grown so has its distinct sectors, which currently include Galleries, Nova, Positions, Survey, Edition, Film, Kabinett, and Public, featuring outdoor installations and larger-scale works. In addition to world-famous galleries like Gagosian and Marian Goodman, ABMB also welcomes 22 first-time exhibitors. “We have some very exciting galleries participating in the Miami Beach show for the first time,” says Horowitz, “from Gaga Fine Arts in Mexico and Leo Xu Projects in China to Galerie Greta Meert in Belgium and Galleria d’Arte Maggiore G.A.M in Italy, [as well as] Di Donna and Callicoon Fine Arts in New York and Marc Selwyn Fine Art and Various Small Fires in Los Angeles.” Better together—and in Miami! BOSTON’S OLD GUARD OF PRIVATE CLUBS OPENS UP TO MILLENNIALS.
Much like its premier universities, Boston’s historic clubs maintain a highly competitive admissions process. Nominations, recommendations, interviews, even classes on club history can be part of the sometimes years-long vetting process. But as these clubs adapt to the times and begin opening their doors to new and younger members, application (and maybe even acceptance) has never been more accessible. The age of innocence: One of the oldest “gentlemen’s clubs” in the country, the old-guard Union Club now includes members as young as their late 20s (and, like the rest of Boston’s private clubs, is now coed.)

sugar and spice Sip, don’t Shoot! the new batch of tequilaS growS up.
The age of añejo: As master distillers begin aging tequila longer, the rise of extra-añejos is placing Mexico’s national spirit on the top shelf amongst whiskeys and Cognacs—and in rocks glasses as straight-nochaser sippers.
It’s no secret that spirits aficionados have long preferred premium whiskeys and Cognacs, but high-end labels are responding to rising demand for sip-worthy tequilas with tipples of astonishing depth and flavor. From artisanal new-crop distilleries to established, world-famous brands, master tequila distillers have begun barrel-aging the blue agave–based spirit for years, allowing the wood to layer rich notes of vanilla and caramel atop agave’s natural spice. But what exactly
58 bostoncommon-magazine.com
makes for a sipping tequila? “First and foremost, it cannot be fiery,” explains Tad Carducci, bar consultant and author of A Lime and a Shaker: Discovering MexicanInspired Cocktails. “But the tequila has to have an intensity of flavor. It should offer a long, lingering finish.” Consider, for example, Dulce Vida Extra Añejo ($160 for 750 ml), aged for five years in former Napa Valley red wine barrels, which impart juicy, round, fruity notes. Meanwhile, Herradura Selección
Suprema Extra Añejo ($350) offers soft, Cognaclike flavors of stone fruit and hazelnut. And Gran Patrón Piedra ($400), the luxury brand’s first-ever extraañejo, is a silky, rounded sipper with plenty of caramel and spice. Interest in premium tequilas is on the rise, says Chantal Martineau, tequila expert and author of How the Gringos Stole Tequila: The Modern Age of Mexico’s Most Traditional Spirit. Thanks in part to celebrity-backed brands, “people are
associating tequila with sophistication and style.” Furthering that association in Boston, she says, is the evolution of Mexican cuisine from street fare into more sophisticated dining. While these selections are delicious on their own, is it okay to mix a high-end tequila into a cocktail? “Of course!” Martineau affirms. However, for pricier bottles, skip the prickly pear margaritas, she suggests, and “make a stirred, spirit-forward cocktail that really lets the tequila shine.”

“Fendi is Italian to its core,” says longtime creative director Karl Lagerfeld. “It’s not only Italian, it’s Roman.” The wonderfully prolific Lagerfeld, who has been at the helm of Fendi for longer than many of us have been alive— since 1965—claims it’s easy to differentiate the Italian collection from those of Chanel and his namesake label, the other two fashion houses under his direction. “I don’t have one personality, I have three,” the designer muses. “Fendi is my Italian version, Chanel my French version, and Lagerfeld is my own version. I never made something that looked like Chanel at Fendi and never made something that looked like Fendi at Chanel, because both have a [separate] identity.” There is perhaps no greater tribute to Fendi’s quintessential romanità than the staging of its 90th anniversary fashion show upon Rome’s Trevi fountain in July. Models literally walked on water—an illusion created by a clear platform placed over the newly-restored fountain and pool—revealing a collection inspired by illustrations of legends and fairy tales. “Very romantic, but modern at the same time,” says Lagerfeld of the collection, which comprised whimsical, flowing dresses, many with

Botticelli-esque empire waists; white lace dresses buried in appliquéd flowers; and lavish fabrications such as lush layers of tulle and velvet—pieces that look like they hail from the enchanted forest. Part and parcel of the 90th-anniversary collection, Fendi has released a limitededition Selleria Peekaboo handbag, a one-of-a-kind accessory made entirely by hand in 60 pieces. The bag features punto baseball, or baseball stitching, a larger-form stitching technique handed down through the generations by Roman master saddlers. The Peekaboo bags are exclusively sold at the Palazzo Fendi boutique in Rome. And, if you happen to be in the Italian capital, head to the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, where you will find “Fendi Roma: The Artisans of Dreams” (through October 29), an exhibition that celebrates the maison’s nine decades of craftsmanship and creativity. For those who can’t make it to Rome, the short film Fendi: Hands Make Beauty highlights the brand’s evolution, and the coffee-table book Fendi Roma, a recent release from Assouline, explores Fendi’s connection with the Eternal City. Lagerfeld, now 83, says he’s still brimming with ideas and is given the freedom to create what he wants at Fendi. So expect plenty more from Italian Karl in years to come. It’s not work, he insists. “Work is when a person wakes up every morning and goes to do something they don’t like,” he says. “I have the chance of doing something I love and doing it [in] the best conditions... I’m interested in a lot of things, even more today than before. I like to change while the world is changing. That’s what fashion is all about!” Saks Fifth Avenue, Prudential Center, 617-937-5271; fendi.com

Bespoken For gentlemen, meet your perfect suit. By Miranda Mccrea
“Without customers knoWing the true value of a product you’ll never build anything special.” —thomas mahon
Fashion-forward men rejoice: No more flying to London for hand-cut suits—Savile Row is here, now, in Boston. Bespoke tailoring service English Cut, a Savile Row institution since its 2001 inception, has opened its second atelier not in Paris or Milan but in the Back Bay, at the Mandarin Oriental Boston. Its opening marks the arrival of hand-cut suits that are “soft tailored” (soft interlinings, felxible seams, stylish draping) in the traditional English manner, an artisanal process that’s a world away from pulling something off the rack. “We don’t want to just fill a person’s wardrobe with our products,” says founder Thomas Mahon. “We want to engage, guide, and inspire them so that we keep our key values of transparency and trust. Without customers knowing the true value of a product you’ll never build anything special.” Mahon, the former head cutter for legendary Savile Row tailors Anderson & Sheppard, opened English Cut to offer the very best of traditional craftsmanship but with a modern aesthetic. Top-tier English cloths and techniques marry with slimmer, shorter silhouettes to create a new era for bespoke suiting. And the city is taking notice. “We already have good friends in Boston,” says Mahon. “I really enjoy this beautiful city. I hope our straightforward approach to delivering quality and value will be much valued here.” 776 Boylston St., 617-603-2944; englishcut.com

The changer On the eve of retirement, Red Sox super-slugger, dedicated philanthropist, and passionate Bostonian david ortiz looks back on more than two decades of defining what it means to be a winner—on and off the field. By Michael hurley

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KERRY BRETT
Before and after: “I don’t think anybody knew what he was, or what it was going to be,” says Boston sports radio host Tony Massarotti of David Ortiz’s arrival in town almost 14 years ago. What followed were incredible new records, three World Championships, and a restored city-wide mojo.
Tryout: Twentyyear-old David Ortiz (then known as David Arias) leads the minorleague Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in hits, runs, home runs, and RBIs.
Superstar status: At Fenway Park, Ortiz hits a walk-off home run in extra innings to win the 2004 ALDS for Boston against the Anaheim Angels. The Red Sox would go on to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals for their first World Series title since 1918.
2004
LOOK AT HIM NOW. Larger than life, the mayor of every room he enters. Everything about him—the swagger, that booming voice, the cars, diamonds, and endorsement deals—lets you know that David Ortiz is no ordinary man. Seeing him now, it’s difficult to believe where he came from, even knowing every detail of his journey—how a skinny Dominican kid named David Arias became a future Hall of Famer known the world over as Big Papi. Like many success stories, this one could have easily never happened. Growing up in Santo Domingo, the son of a baseball player and the eldest of four children, Ortiz was imbued with a love of sport from an early age. But in a place like the Dominican Republic, he was hardly alone. He managed to stand out from the thousands of Dominican teens who got a look from Major League Baseball scouts in the ’90s by possessing an alluring blend of size, power, and athleticism. It was enough to convince the Seattle Mariners that they had found a gem. Ortiz signed with the Mariners just days after his 17th birthday, in 1992. He experienced his ups and downs as a low-level minor leaguer, but in September 1996 he learned that he had been selected by the Minnesota Twins as the “player to be named later” in a trade that had been completed weeks earlier. He got a taste of the DAVID big leagues from 1997 to ’99 and was a part-time player for the three years that followed. But in 2002, instead of re-signing him for a meager $1 million, the Twins released Ortiz, leaving him on baseball’s scrap heap at 27. It seemed that his brief, relatively anonymous career was over. Ortiz recalls his mind-set after getting dumped by the Twins. “Just don’t give
up on your dreams,” he says. “You’re always going to face problems on the road that are going to try to tell you not to go. And it’s up to you if you want to let that happen.” Fortunately, Ortiz had the best pitchman possible on his side. Fellow Dominican Pedro Martinez owned the city of Boston as the ace starting pitcher for the Red Sox, and as someone who had known Ortiz for years and believed in his untapped ability as a ballplayer, he persuaded Boston’s front office that Ortiz was worthy of a contract. So the Red Sox took a flyer on him. It was soon clear why. October of 2003, Game 4 of the American League Division Series: Ortiz delivered a goahead double and sent a tense Fenway Park into a state of glorious delirium. It continued in 2004, when he delivered two walk-off hits on consecutive nights against the Yankees to spark the greatest comeback in sports history—the first a violent clobbering of a baseball in the wee hours of the morning, the next a less majestic but equally uplifting single delivered later that same calendar day. With those hits, he accomplished what few Boston baseball players have ever been able to: He made the fans believe. Put simply, Ortiz had a knack for coming through when needed the most. “I don’t think anybody knew what he was when he arrived, or what it ORTIZ was going to be,” says Tony Massarotti, the sports radio host and former baseball writer who cowrote Ortiz’s 2007 book, Big Papi: My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits. “There’s no way anybody could have possibly understood what was coming.” Anybody, that is, except Ortiz. “I knew I could do it. I just didn’t know how it was going to be,” he says. “I mean, I knew I had the talent to play the game.”

2013
As Red Sox Nation discovered in 2004, number 34 also had the ability to deliver what was once thought an impossibility: a World Series title in Boston. Three years later, another one. And then, on October 13, 2013, Ortiz cemented his status as the greatest clutch hitter in Red Sox history. His team was an inch away from falling behind two games to none in the American League Championship Series—a deficit that would have put their World Series dreams on life support. With the bases loaded and his team trailing by four in the eighth inning, Ortiz stepped up to the plate. First pitch: grand slam. Pandemonium at Fenway Park. The radio call from broadcaster Dave O’Brien said it all: “David Ortiz! David Ortiz! David Ortiz!” Even at the age of 40, even in the midst of a begrudging farewell tour, the triumphant story continues for Ortiz, who has registered perhaps the single greatest season ever for a player of his age. With still a week and a half left to play in the season, he launched his 36th home run of the year—more than any player in MLB history has ever hit in his final season. He also owns the record for most homers by a player aged 40 or older. In turning back the clock, he’s put forth his best all-around season since 2007, when he was 31 years old. He’s the eldest player on the Red Sox roster, 11 years older than the average MLB player, but he still carries the most important bat in Boston’s explosive lineup. “To see a guy hit like he’s hit at 39 and 40 is just insane. You just don’t see it,” Massarotti says. “What you’re seeing is ridiculous. To say that it’s rare doesn’t do it justice.” This type of production at age 40 is significant on its own, but it has also created something never before thought possible: It’s brought about
Swan song: Ortiz hits a home run against the Houston Astros earlier this year. “To see a guy hit like he’s hit at his age is just insane. To say that it’s rare doesn’t do it justice,” says sports radio host Tony Massarotti.

comparisons to Ted Williams. This may be Ortiz’s grandest accomplishment. Forget the actual debate; the mere suggestion is a remarkable feat. For 60 years, most of the baseball world has considered Williams to be The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived. Yet here is Ortiz, not long ago Jeremy Giambi’s backup at first base, vying to steal the crown. “There have been players who have been the face of their team,” says Larry Lucchino, the former Red Sox president and CEO, who played a major role in signing Ortiz back in January 2003. “But there’s been no one with the combination of presence and personality and performance, and just the powerful impact that David Ortiz is leaving behind.” His impact, however, is not restricted to the Red Sox. As Ortiz has aged, he has become the sport’s greatest ambassador, taking time before, during, and after games to embrace teammates and opponents alike. He is ensuring that the wisdom he has gained in 20-plus years of professional baseball will live on in the next generation. He has become, essentially, the resident dad in Major League Baseball. After all these years, he has grown into his nickname. “He’s got the biggest heart in baseball,” Lucchino says. “When you make somebody feel better about himself and you can be somebody who has advice [on how] to do things better and you can make a difference in somebody else’s life, I think that’s what to me matters the most,” Ortiz says. “I’m a friendly guy. I’m a person who wants everybody to be fine. So, really, I feel like that’s one of the things that I worry the most about. Because anybody can have an oh-for-four, anybody can have a bad season, anybody can have a

slump. But making a difference in somebody else’s life, not everybody’s capable of. And that is important to me.” While Ortiz has spent the majority of 2016 tearing the covers off baseballs, this will be his final year. Sure, the sport thrived in Boston long before Ortiz arrived, and the Red Sox train will chug along for many years to come. But the Ortiz era—we’re unlikely to see anything like it again soon. The transformation of the franchise from perennial heartbreakers to regular champions cannot be overstated, and Ortiz was the central figure in all three World Series victories. “He just became this, dare I say, this Ruthian figure that was undaunted and undeterred by anything,” Massarotti says. “The guy was fearless, and downright bloodless in pressure situations. The Red Sox are not who they are today without this guy.” While his clutch hits in October of 2004 would have been enough to put Ortiz on track to one day get a statue outside Fenway Park, it was only the beginning of the city’s love affair with him. He won another World Series three years later; he celebrated becoming an American citizen; he established the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, helping kids receive medical treatment both in Boston and his native Dominican Republic; he broke a 68-year-old single-season franchise record for home runs; he provided a historically dominant performance in leading the Red Sox to a third title, in 2013; and he has delivered the finest swan song in the long and storied history of baseball. But in April 2013, Ortiz offered what will undoubtedly be remembered as his most profound contribution to Boston. It was on a baseball diamond, yes, but it had nothing to do with baseball. Five days prior, the finish line of the Boston Marathon had been bombed. The city had been shut down for a frightful manhunt for one of the culprits, forcing the Red Sox to postpone their first home game since the attack. Shaken, 35,000 people filed into Fenway on a Saturday afternoon, but it didn’t feel right to move on to something as trivial as sports. Certainly nobody knew what to say. Ortiz stepped onto david the field and raised his fist. “This is our fucking city!” he roared. “Nobody’s gonna dictate our freedom!” The crowd roared back. David Ortiz, as always, came through in the clutch. Ortiz’s only regret about the speech is that children heard him cursing. (“I was not aware that he was going to drop an F-bomb,” Lucchino laughs, “but it didn’t bother me when he did, because it seemed so completely sincere and appropriate.”) Beyond that, the moment remains a point of pride for the man whom Boston relied on in a time of need. “When you get angry and you get mad, that’s the first thing that you think of,” Ortiz explains. “And I was angry. I was mad. I was very emotional because of everything that was going down, as a citizen in Boston. The Marathon is part of what we are. Even if you’re not from Boston or you don’t live in Boston, the Marathon makes you a part of it.” “And then something like that goes down, you just—you feel it deeply,” he adds, taking a beat to step back out of that moment. “So [the speech] went down that way, and I’m happy and proud the way it went down, because it motivated a lot of people to get back together and go back to what we used to be before that.” Now, with the finishing touches placed on his final season and the farewell gifts handed out, Boston must prepare itself for life without him. Surely, life will go on, and so will baseball. But there will never be another David Ortiz. The man, like his journey and his lasting impact, is truly one of a kind.
One with the city (clockwise from top left): Ortiz and his wife, Tiffany, attend the Boston Celtics’ 2012 home opener; hugging teammate Jackie Bradley, Jr. after his 500th career MLB home run in 2015; flashing the Red Sox’s latest World Series trophy at a victory parade in November 2013; posing with Make-A-Wish recipients in 2015; visiting a little Bostonian at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2014 with his eponymous Children’s Fund; delivering a galvanizing speech to 35,000 fans following the Boston Marathon bombings in April 2013.

Billy Evers is smiling from ear to ear aboard what he dubs “The Happiness Tour”: a journey through what makes him happy. It’s an adventure he shares with his friends and clients in his role as all-star events planner for Greater Boston and beyond. And what’s not to be happy about? Since striking out solo several months ago after leaving his former post as creative director for Rafanelli Events, Evers, the founder of Billy Evers Creative, has designed and staged an adventure wedding in Los Angeles, a sinners-and-saintsthemed birthday party, and a glamourama gala for the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. “It’s been really extraordinary to truly express my own vision,” says the 55-year-old Boston resident and Queens, New York, native. That vision includes operating sans office and merging his professional and social spheres. Evers says he likes to connect with each client to form a “friendship of a lifetime” in an effort to better execute events to their needs. He cherishes the social aspect of his business, he adds, getting to know his clients personally rather than just professionally, and that that social component, coupled with

A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN WORKING FROM HOME SHOULDN’T MEAN WORKING WITHOUT STYLE.
For most of us, cooler temps and waning sunlight mean less play and more work. And, with the increasing population of telecommuters (30 million Americans work from home at least once a week), why not trick up your very own workspace? Kristine Irving, creative director of Koo de Kir Architectural Interiors, shares some ideas to get both you and your home office on-trend. koodekir.com HOT SEAT
“Problem-solving becomes much more comfortable with a cushy chair. Try incorporating unexpected seating options to add personality to a ho-hum office. Sink into a vintage Paul McCobb armchair (machineage.com), accented with a plushy pillow, or go ergonomic with a swivel chair by Keilhauer (keilhauer.com).”

SKY SOLO PRIVATE BOSTON JETSETTING HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER. BY MIA ZARRELLA
On really busy weeks, it’s tough to differentiate between a commuting executive and an executive commuter. Brothers David and Eric Zipkin, of Tradewind Aviation, a private jet company operating in the Northeast and the Caribbean, want to conflate those images. Here, David Zipkin speaks to Swiss planes, expanding routes (including a new shuttle service from Logan to greater New York City), and private flying as convenience. What’s flying to New York? A Pilatus PC-12, a Swiss-built, turbine-powered, pressurized aircraft with comfortable seating for eight passengers. We operate 16 of these aircraft.
Where are Bostonians flying more—the Northeast or the Caribbean? It’s about 50/50. The Northeast can be much busier on peak days in the summer, but the Caribbean has a longer high season. What’s next for Tradewind? Continued expansion in the Northeast and Caribbean. We’re also looking at other regions, like ski resorts out west, where the convenience of our shuttle concept would work well. flytradewind.com

After the successful launches of Atelier Swarovski jewelry and accessories, Swarovski has added another beautiful branch to its more than 120-year-old empire with the debut of Atelier Swarovski Home. Says Nadja Swarovski, the company’s head of corporate communications and design services, “We wanted to translate the forward-thinking design DNA and technical expertise within our brand, as well as the energy of the creative talent, into a collection of luxurious and covetable objects.” For the debut, the company collaborated with nine of the world’s leading designers for crystal objects that are remarkable for their artistry and technologically advanced design. Included in the collection is a chessboard combining maps of Manhattan and Milan designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, as well as a series of sculptural candle holders from Kim Thomé. Most noteworthy in the collection is the Crista centerpiece by the late architect Zaha Hadid. It utilizes Swarovski’s groundbreaking Wave Cut technique, which “combines cutting-edge computer technology with mechanical engineering to cut curved forms in crystal,” says Swarovski. “The wave cutting technique took 10 years to develop, and only two people in the world are able to skillfully use the machine,” she adds. “We were all so heartbroken by Zaha Hadid’s passing, but it seems fitting that she was the first person to use this new technology with one of the final pieces she produced.” atelierswarovski.com

NATICK Minnie Driver Stand Up To Cancer Ambassador
Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Although it’s more common in older women, ovarian cancer affects women of all ages, even in their 20s. There is no early detection test, and symptoms can be subtle. But while you can’t see it, you can take steps to get ahead of it by knowing your risk factors. Family history of cancer and presence of gene mutations like BRCA are risk factors, so talk to your family and your doctor. This information makes you less likely to ignore vague signs that could indicate disease. Meanwhile, promising collaborative research will continue to shed light on new advances in diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.
