REVEL YELL! IN BOSTON’S BIG PARTY SEASON, THE CITY’S HOLIDAY GALAS AND BENEFITS ARE A FEAST FOR THE SENSES.

What is it about a smashing party? Everything, baby. Pounding music, fabulous food, gloriously dressed guests, twinkling lights, and irresistible personalities. So here is Boston-based supermodel Gisele Bündchen, dancing,

smiling, and shimmering the way we all dream of feeling at every holiday party this season. “She’s magnetic, a great smile,” says celeb photographer and Cape Cod fanatic David X. Prutting, who captured the moment.

10  BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM

“She has that kind of energy that makes you want to be around her.” Prutting caught this candid shot at a bash for celebrity photographer Mario Testino. “It was an amazing room, something out of Versailles,” he says.

“Cool lights, rocking dance floor, cocktails flowing. Everyone was free.” Prutting, who photographs the Met Gala annually, adds that snapping the right moment is all about fitting in: “I call it participant observation. I

try to act like a host with cameras, engaging and earning the trust of the guests.” Here, he captured the archetypal image of how every party thrower and -goer in Boston will embrace the season. Santé! @dxprutting

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

NEW YEAR AFTER NEW YEAR, I write down two resolutions: one, drink more water, and two, buy holiday gifts early. Rate of success: I am constantly dehydrated and shop, at the most, 48 hours before “deadline.” So this year, things are going to go down differently. Forget the water— I’ll just hydrate with whatever beverage is close. Instead of finding the perfect (last minute) present, I vow to cook a meal, go to a movie, whatever… Simply spend more quality time with the people I love. Our cover story stars (see “Insta-Boston,” page 82), social media and otherwise (Olympic gold medalist, anyone?), echo the sentiment of prioritizing real-life, real-time experiences. While dazzling Instagram images and pithy tweets continue to expand the next frontier of

everything from social capital to business branding, we all know nothing can ever replace “keeping it real.” Now more than ever, maybe. Whenever you peel back the veneer of success, however you define that, you more than likely discover a killer work ethic, an eye on the prize, and a past fraught with failure. I had the pleasure of hearing entrepreneurs Sir Richard Branson, Jessica Alba, and Maria Sharapova speak at the recent Forbes Under 30 conference (check out the stories on Boston Common-Magazine.com). Each were wildly candid about how their risks (Branson dropped out of school at 16), mistakes (Sharapova was forced to take a suspension from tennis), or hardships (Alba suffered from debilitating asthma as a child)

propelled each to “win” at life on their own terms. Big Night is a great example of that. The signature charity event raises money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay, a nonprofit organization committed to helping youth thrive by providing them with adult mentors. Chart-topper Jason Derulo will perform at The House of Blues on February 4, and I can’t wait to go because, along with the star-studded crowd, there will be a chance to meet many of the kids whose lives were changed by a mentor who helped turn obstacles into building blocks. You may catch some of the kids’ faces on Instagram, but rest assured that there is substance behind each smile. Wishing you a holiday season filled with “real” love and light. Hydrate well.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

HOLIDAY SEASON IS IN FULL SWING, with all of its festive lights and decorations! We got a head start celebrating as we welcomed fashion designer Jason Wu to town for an event we co-hosted with Saks Fifth Avenue and the Museum of Fine Arts Fashion Council. Then we gathered at Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams for the Fashion Meets Furniture party, with partners Mr. Sid and Eleventy, benefitting Youth Design. Sephora’s newest location opened at the Van Ness building in Fenway with a preview event and ribbon-cutting ceremony. I also had the pleasure of attending an exclusive event hosted by Royal Jewelers and Giovanni Carestia, president North America of Officine Panerai, that had the Italian brand’s exquisite watch collection on display. Shopping for others during this time of year is at the top of our list. I’m looking forward to checking out the Prudential Center’s new tower during its string of highly anticipated store openings—Under Armor, Tesla, Polo Ralph Lauren, Shinola, Eataly... This addition will prove to be a new go-to shopping destination—and lunch spot! Speaking of new… Things are moving faster than ever before, so in this issue we look at what’s to come in the world of Boston digital by spotlighting our city’s most influential social media stars (see “Insta-Boston,” page 82). But before we move too fast, let’s raise our glasses and spend time with family and friends. Wishing everyone a very happy and healthy 2017!

HEIDI PRIBELL The services of awardwinning Boston interior designer Heidi Pribell’s namesake firm range from helping clients acquire works of fine and decorative art to guiding them through a complete home renovation. She explores the theme of metallics in this issue’s “Heavy Metals” (page 114). How do you describe your design style? Reimagining classic elegance with touches of bohemian flair. What are some of the materials you enjoy working with? Alpaca and embroidered textiles for upholstered walls and couture draperies, artisanal blown glass for custom light fixtures, and all types of crafted metal finishes. What are some design trends you’re seeing around town? Very contemporary interiors with a softer edge. Oriental rugs are making a comeback because they help anchor and define spaces in large, multifunction rooms.

28  BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM

JOSEPH GORDON CLEVELAND Art director, stylist, and writer Joseph Gordon Cleveland has contributed editorial writing and fashion features to the Boston Herald, Boston Globe, and The Improper Bostonian, among other publications. He curated a James Bond-inspired holiday gift guide (page 76). What are your favorite types of holiday gifts to receive? To give? In both cases, simple, thoughtful gifts that recall a shared experience or interest. What’s the worst gift you’ve ever received? That you’ve given? Received? A gift card. Given? The same. And I still feel terribly guilty about it. Boston recently hosted its Fashion Week—are there any fashion trends you’re seeing around town? Far too many oversized logos. Advertising the brand you’re wearing isn’t style, it’s consumerism at its most garish.

KATE BOTTS

TONYA MEZRICH

Born in Morocco and educated in London and Switzerland, Kate Botts came to Boston to begin a career in fashion retail before starting her own personal styling service, Shop Your Closet, which recently expanded into home organization. She shares her Ali MacGrawinspired holiday wish list in the gift guide (page 76).

Louisiana-born, Bostonbased writer Tonya Mezrich taps into her experience launching a jewelry line and serving as the resident fashion expert at NECN to report on Boston’s style and design scenes. She surveys three new luxury residences in this issue’s “The Skyline Club” (page 116).

What inspired you to start Shop Your Closet? After managing Holiday Boutique on Charles Street for seven years, it seemed like a natural transition to go from styling clients in a boutique to doing it on a more personal level in their homes. What are you incorporating into your styling this winter? I recently picked up a jacket and blazer by British designer Katherine Hooker, one of Kate Middleton’s go-to designers. All of her pieces are easy and versatile.

What are you seeing in the Boston real estate scene right now? Just when I thought the Back Bay was slowing down because of lack of space, new buildings like 30 Dalton are created out of parking lots. Unlikely hotspots like Somerville and East Boston are also picking up tons of speed with new properties creating bidding wars. Do you have any personal connections to the featured properties? 30 Dalton is in my backyard, and my husband has a regular card game in the Millennium owners lounge. The Pierce is a place after my heart—when you say heated outdoor swimming pool, I am in!

TAKE WHAT’S YOURS! File a claim and collect your cash.

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS? Let’s clear things up What is Unclaimed Property? Unclaimed Property is any fnancial asset (not including land or real estate) that has gone without customer-generated activity for an extended period of time.

Is this going to cost me money? No, this is a public service provided for FREE by the Ofce of the State Treasurer. There is no time limit to fle a claim, and all funds earn interest until claimed.

Examples include: » Savings and checking accounts » Unpaid wages or commissions » Uncashed insurance proceeds » Stocks, underlying shares or uncashed dividends » Customer deposits or overpayments » Certifcates of deposit » Credit balances and refunds » Money orders » Life insurance policies » Uncashed beneft checks » Accounts payable checks

Why does the state have my money in the frst place? Property becomes unclaimed when the asset holder is unable to contact the asset owner for three years (or ffteen years for traveler’s checks). The law requires business entities and others to review and turn over all unclaimed assets in their possession to the State on an annual basis. So... What’s the catch? Believe it or not, there isn’t one! Returning unclaimed property is a FREE service that every state provides. Helping you recover lost assets is our only goal. FOOT FETISH THE PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM EXPLORES THE PLEASURE AND PAIN OF THE HEEL. BY FALON MORAN

You think your six-inch Jimmy Choos are tough to strut in? Try walking on a rubber, fiberglass, and leather platform. Architect Zaha Hadid wore them (the Nova, SHOWN) just fine; of course, she designed them herself for Dutch footwear brand United Nude. You can see those, along with gaggles of other spectacular creations, at “Shoes: Pleasure and Pain,” a special exhibition dedicated to the cultural

significance, technical development, and transformative capacity of shoes, running through March 12, 2017, at the Peabody Essex Museum. Presented in partnership with Dress for Success Boston’s shoe drive (November 16–27), the exhibit showcases nearly 300 pairs of vintage and contemporary footwear from around the globe, including the Vivienne Westwood blue platforms worn by Naomi Campbell during her infamous 1993 runway fall. “It’s really quite fascinating to see the range of creativity that fashion

from different times and places has called out for something that basically was intended to be purely functional,” says the museum’s deputy director, Lynda Hartigan. Unable to choose a favorite, Hartigan does hold a special place in her heart—and on her feet— for Christian Louboutin’s Anemone stilettos in bright pink. “To me, that shoe epitomizes everything about how we move in our shoes, what our shoes say about ourselves in terms of emotions, in terms of how we want to project,” she says. “Plus, they’re extraordinarily feminine.” 161 Essex St., Salem, 978-745-9500; pem.org; boston.dressfor success.org

Standout: One of nearly 300 extraordinary shoes on view at the Peabody Essex Museum, the Nova, designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid for United Nude, is one of the only shoes in history to employ rotation molding, creating a smooth, seamless finish.

HAIL HIVE! A NEW MOBILE BAR TRUCK LETS YOU TAKE YOUR NEXT COCKTAIL PARTY TO GO.

It all started in Jamaica Plain, just a simple conversation between neighbors. Lance Davis was a tad bored with his job in the wine business; Graham McKissock, a general contractor, was experiencing his own brand of blasé. Both agreed: They needed a new adventure. Enter Hive, a swanky mobile bar truck and event service. “I’d never seen a truck that served alcohol, so I thought that’d be a cool angle,” says Davis. “It really was the start of something new, so we jumped in head first.” With two customized Airstream trailers in their fleet, Davis and McKissock are leading the mobile cocktail crusade in New England, serving up innovative drinks and events specialized for every season. “We did a luau birthday one snowy afternoon in January

with heat lamps all around,” Davis says. “There is a possibility to do anything, despite the weather.” This holiday season, the Hive crew is whipping up a festive herbal concoction called the Brown Derby—rye, grapefruit juice, agave nectar, bitters, sage—as one of their specialty cocktails. With a fully stocked bar—spirits, wine, craft beer, tools and equipment—Hive sources New England’s local products with a farm-to-table flair: celery-infused gin, walnut-trimmed bourbon, and more. While the trucks feature an indoor lounge and expert mixologists, Hive also provides trickedup tents for glamping or cocktail hopping. Very neighborly—just like Davis and McKissock themselves. hive-events.com

SOUND THE ALARMS… AND CHURCH BELLS!

Master puppet: In the Tony-nominated Hand to God, at the SpeakEasy Stage Company, Satan finds a surprising—and hilarious—channel for expression: a puppet named Tyrone.

PREPARE FOR THE FUNNIEST RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE YOU’LL EVER HAVE.

Sunday school danger lurks in the most unlikely places… In a small Texas town, down in the church basement, puppet time has gone very, very wrong. So goes Robert Askin’s hilarious comedy Hand to God, which receives its New England premiere courtesy of Boston’s SpeakEasy Stage Company, where it will run from January 6 through February 4, 2017. Nominated for several Tonys, including Best Play, when it was staged on Broadway last year, the show finds teenager Jason and his mother grieving over the recent death of his father. As Jason tries to process his grief through a puppet named Tyrone, the knitted creation suddenly takes on a personality all its own: Satan. Irreverent, not to mention horny, Satan has no use for church politeness. “I couldn’t resist this play,” says SpeakEasy’s artistic director, Paul Daigneault, who rushed to see the show in New York at the urging of friends and colleagues. The play’s style “allows the [Sunday school students] to give voice to their inner bad boy,” he says. “We get to see all those things that human beings try so hard to cover up. That’s what made me burst out laughing.” Unleash puppet pandemonium… 539 Tremont St., 617-482-3279; speakeasystage.com

“WE HAVE MANY INDIAN FOODIES AT THE TAJ—IN ALL FORMS.” — gurminder gidda

ROYAL INDIAN THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, A NEW RESERVATION ALLOWS YOU TO FEAST LIKE A KING AT THE CAFÉ AT THE TAJ.

Banquet call: Kebabs, curries, breads—course after course awaits guests who reserve The Taj’s exclusive Maharaja Dinner, which features unusual beverage pairings, such as limitededition bottlings from single malt Scotch distiller Laphroaig.

Royal is certainly one way to describe the Maharaja Dinner at The Café at the luxury Taj Boston hotel. Carefully placing galouti kebab, tandoori murgh, and Lucknowi lamb biryani onto a table fit for a palatial banquet, chef Gurminder Gidda does not leave an inch to spare. ervation via the Taj. This type of extravagant feast was historically served to royalty, known in India as maharaja. But that was then, and this is now. Throughout the dinner, guests also enjoy beverage pairings—most of which may seem surprising as accompaniments to Indian cuisine: white wines from the Alsace region of France, single-malt Scotch,

such as special releases from Laphroaig, and an apple sangria served in an absinthe fountain. “We are the only place in Boston serving a cocktail from an absinthe fountain,” says The Café’s beverage manager, Ross Thereault. “It’s a total surprise, and guests adore it.” Local Indian cuisine fanatics have long known about Gidda, who came

to Boston after working for years at the Taj Mumbai. “We have many Indian foodies at the Taj Boston, as well, in all forms,” says Gidda. “We cook for students, tourists, and we even do large-scale weddings.” And dinners fit for kings—in the coldest of winter nights, there’s nothing like it. 15 Arlington St., 617-536-5700; tajhotels .com/boston

Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Although it’s more common in older women, ovarian cancer affects women of all ages, even in their 20s. There is no early detection test, and symptoms can be subtle. But while you can’t see it, you can take steps to get ahead of it by knowing your risk factors. Family history of cancer and presence of gene mutations like BRCA are risk factors, so talk to your family and your doctor. This information makes you less likely to ignore vague signs that could indicate disease. Meanwhile, promising collaborative research will continue to shed light on new advances in diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer. While many fashion houses come and go or change direction with each new in-house designer, Escada is approaching the grand age of forty without losing sight of what makes it special in the eyes of its faithful followers—while simultaneously offering “classic cool” to seduce younger fans. “In fashion, reaching 40 years is a great accomplishment,” says Escada’s fashion director, Daniel Wingate, of the label’s upcoming milestone. “It’s an honor that so many women still love the brand and turn to Escada to make them feel beautiful.” With that in mind, Escada has created a bright, vivacious resort collection laced with modern elements, but which, Wingate adds, translates the brand’s heritage for today. Wingate turned to David Hockney’s celebrated pool paintings—those modernist emblems of 1960s California cool—for his initial inspiration. Describing the collection as a “wink to the bygone era of famous swans like Babe Paley and Jackie Kennedy and the glamorous days of Hollywood,” he embraced super-fresh colors with names like Melrose pink and Mimosa yellow, along with shades of blue (a particular obsession in Hockney’s

Moments in the sun (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT): For its 2017 resort collection, Escada modeled a yellow frock after Kim Basinger’s 1998 Oscars dress; the collection also includes coats and gowns in iridescent fabrics as well as kitten heels and metallic slides.

aquatic series). Key pieces include pencil-striped coats with matching dresses and cigarette pants worn with fortune cookie-shaped tops tied at the waist with karate-style belts. Wingate’s other inspiration, of course, is the “Escadettes”—the designer’s name for his loyal clients— who look to the brand to expand their wardrobes as they prepare to winter in toasty, sun-filled resorts. “They’re adding some wonderfully feminine but simple shapes in vivid, fresh colors, the head-to-toe tonal ones and the white and black grouping, along with the striped pieces that bring in all colors of the collection,” he says. “It’s also time to be more playful with your clothes.” To that end, he encourages his clientele to try a jumpsuit, belt the waist over a coat, and even experiment with a top worn back to front. The collection also borrows from the past—specifically, the custom-made mint cowl-neck gown that Kim Basinger wore when she won the Oscar for best supporting actress for L.A. Confidential in 1998. Wingate has adopted the flattering neckline for a Mimosa yellow dress as well as for hip-length, waist-skimming tops with deep backs that can be worn with conservative white slacks or chic ankle-length pencil pants. And peeking out from both pants and dresses are metallic slides in silver, gold, or bronze that Wingate calls “Frank Gehry buildings for the foot.” Although accessories are minimal, Escada has introduced its chic new ML40 handbag—available in eyepopping colors—to commemorate the company’s upcoming 40th birthday and recognize Escada’s founder, Margaretha Ley. While the 2017 resort collection has pieces reminiscent of a more unhurried age, when women seemed to have all the time in the world to get themselves together, it’s still as modern and polished as the woman who wears it today—one who needs to keep it stylish but without overthinking her wardrobe. For Wingate, it amounts to a simple design credo: “Be relevant.” 308 Boylston St., 617-437-1200; escada.com

THE GIFTED HAND JEWELRY DESIGNER SOPHIE HUGHES BRIGHTENS UP THE SEASON WITH BEDAZZLING BAUBLES. BY FALON MORAN

While South End jewelry designer Sophie Hughes creates a wide variety of bold and intricate designs, for the holiday gift-giving season she recommends hewing toward the trendy or the classic. For trendchasers, “our large silver cuff is really hot.” For classicists, she points to her

signature gold hoop earrings: “Our hoops are unique—there’s definitely something noticeably different about them.” The difference lies in each of Hughes’s pieces being handcrafted, and from materials both socially and ethically sourced. All of the metals are recycled

(they come from a refinery in Virginia), and the stones are reclaimed. Hughes showcases her high-end ombre cuff bracelets, stack rings, gold-laced pendants, and more at her Dartmouth Street boutique, Ore. Just up the spiral stairs is her studio, where each design is conceived and every

piece made in you-miss-itand-it’s-gone numbers, with a maximum of 25 pieces per style. Growing up in Kennebunk, Maine, Hughes found her passion for design in a high-school jewelry class. After graduating with a BFA in jewelry and metalsmithing

from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2009, she knew she was ready to debut her own line. “I started out early on and just went straight forward,” says Hughes. “I still really love what I’m doing.” 80 Dartmouth St., 617-247-7426; storeore.com

THIS SEASON’S HOTTEST BEAUTY COLLECTIONS ARE INSPIRED BY THE MYSTERIES OF FASHION, TRAVEL, AND FRIENDSHIP. BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE

This season, a trio of distinctive beauty brands bypasses the usual sunsets and roses for more original sources of inspiration. Victoria Beckham fans rejoiced when the fashion designer announced her first makeup collection in collaboration with Estée Lauder (Saks Fifth Avenue, 800 Boylston St., 617-2628500; saks.com). The limited-edition line pays homage to Beckham’s fave cities—London, LA, New York, and Paris—with curated looks that include a matte bronzer, an emerald-hued eye shadow, and a “perfect nude” lipstick. Makeup looks from the runway are sometimes too dramatic for the street— with the notable exception of Armani’s

ART NOUV-EAU THESE GALLERY-WORTHY PERFUME BOTTLES ARE MEANT TO BE ON DISPLAY. BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE

Attention! The newest highfashion fragrance releases come in bottles as exquisite as the perfumes within. When Christian Louboutin enlisted architect Thomas Heatherwick to design the containers for his three new fragrances, including Tornade Blonde, the results were stunning undulated glass bottles,

each with a central aperture. “It was no longer a single volume, but became a ring of perfume,” says Heatherwick. “Christian wanted to a create a flow of fragrance within the bottle.” Other designers have played with the toppers to create artistry as well as functionality. collection, Bulgari’s Le Gemme Orientali collection features a cabochonshaped stopper with a gold design reminiscent of Mediterranean architecture, while the opulent structural cap of Sisley’s Soir d’Orient, designed by contemporary artist Bronisław Krzysztof, resembles a crown.

For the Black Orchid Lalique Edition, Tom Ford called on the famed crystal house to create a finely fluted, Art Deco black crystal bottle. (A limited edition, only 1,200 pieces were created, each engraved by Lalique with a unique edition number.) More surreal is Cartier’s new scent for men, L’Envol

de Cartier, which sits in a removable—and refillable— capsule within a detachable glass dome. Seen from a distance, it’s as if the elixir is levitating. Says Cartier perfumer Mathilde Laurent, “We developed 2,000 drawings over more than two years [in order] to achieve the perfect masterpiece.”

SAVING FACE A GROUNDBREAKING NEW TREATMENT MAKES THE DREADED DOUBLE CHIN A THING OF THE PAST.

A recent survey by the American Society for Dermatological Surgery revealed that nearly 67 percent of us are as bothered by double chins as we are by lines and wrinkles around the eyes. But while there are several options for smoothing out the crinkles, a quick fix for a shimmying chin has always proved elusive—until now. Beauty-minded pharma company Kythera Biopharmaceuticals has debuted Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for that under-the-chin wobble—or, in medical terms, submental fat. Utilizing precise injections of deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells, Kybella, which enjoyed phenomenal success during clinical trials, has emerged as something of a miracle fix—for the appropriate patients, of course. “It’s a great product in the right circumstance, but the patient selection has to be correct,” says Dr. Stephen C. Adler, a Miami-based facial plastic surgeon. “It’s best in younger patients between 30 and 45 [who have] some fullness under the chin but otherwise good skin texture and tension.” “Kybella’s role is strategic and limited only to fat under the chin,” adds Adler. “It’s not the same as a neck lift, because it does not pull or tighten the muscles. It also takes two or three sessions, and there is a recovery time of a few weeks in between.” Whatever it takes to unearth your true face… Treatment programs can range from $1,300 to $7,200; mykybella.com

LET’S HAVE A PARADE! MACY’S CELEBRATES ITS 90TH THANKSGIVING DAY SPECTACLE WITH A FANCY RIZZOLI TOME AND IN-STORE EVENTS FROM COAST TO COAST. BY JILL SIERACKI

When the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade makes its way down New York’s Central Park West and Sixth Avenue on November 24, the celebration is set to be even more exuberant than usual to mark the 90th edition this year. “We like to make sure nothing is duplicated— we’re giving people a full breadth of entertainment from the moment the turkey crosses the starting line to the time Santa

officially rings in the holiday season,” says Amy Kule, executive producer and parade official. The parade reaches 50 million viewers with its nationally televised NBC broadcast, and 3.5 million line the streets in New York to witness it live. As part of this year’s milestone, Rizzoli has introduced the coffee-table book Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: A New York City Holiday Tradition, which captures

74 BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM

the history and scope of the spectacle and features a foreword by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and afterword by Macy’s Chairman and CEO Terry J. Lundgren. “The parade’s halo effect becomes a tangible reality for shoppers at their local Macy’s store and macys.com,” says Lundgren. “They expect the parade’s perfectly choreographed execution to translate into a seamless shopping experience.”

Across the country, in-store celebratory events and products will be unveiled— and a new app even allows users to design and create their own Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “This is a milestone for Macy’s, but I think it’s a milestone for every fan we have across the country,” says Kule. “This is not a New York parade; this is America’s parade.” 450 Washington St., 617-3573000; macys.com

Sky’s the limit! Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is filled with its signature floats, balloons, and novelty “balloonicles” and “trycaloons” (balloonvehicle hybrids). Launched in 1924 by Macy’s employees, the parade only took a hiatus during World War II. BELOW: The new Macy’s coffee-table book ($30) from Rizzoli.

STYLE SPOTLIGHT

THEN AND NOW! ALL-AMERICAN BRAND GUESS HONORS BOTH PAST AND FUTURE IN TWO NEW COLLECTIONS.

Gender benders: In addition to the classic stylings of its Originals line, seen in a throwback denim sherpa jacket ($158, top right), Guess goes unisex with its His & Hers collection, featuring (clockwise from top left) T-shirts ($69), taper crop pants ($128), and denim jackets ($148), as well as an overcoat ($238) and leather shirt ($158).

Who can forget Guess’s indelibly sexy pin-up ads from the ’80s and ’90s? The Los Angeles brand that stamped Brigitte Bardot double Claudia Schiffer and Jayne Mansfield-esque Anna Nicole Smith onto the American consciousness now pays homage to its own history with a new capsule collection of throwbacks called Guess Originals. “We want to

provide our [current] customers with a collection of classic silhouettes that mirror the pieces found in Guess’s DNA,” says CEO Victor Herrero. The line, with pieces named for the styles on which the company first built its glam, carefree image, will include skinny and baggy high-waisted jeans, vintage-style dungarees, oversized pencil skirts, and denim

bustiers for women—all featuring the iconic upside-down triangle logo. Men’s looks include ’90s-esque work wear, carpenter jeans, oversized Sherpa jackets, and a leather-blocked black denim jacket embellished with stars and stripes. But the brand is having it both ways, simultaneously releasing a forwardthinking unisex collection, His & Hers, with basics

such as tees, blazers, outerwear, and athleisure, all cut to common, adaptable fits. The overall aesthetic is clean, classic, even austere, with nary a logo in sight. “With a collection of premium staples,” says Herrero, “Guess’s expansion into the unisex fashion category [helps] blur the line.” 80 Newbury St., 617-267-0746; guess.com

FASHION, FOOD, PHOTOGRAPHY, nightlife, sports: right, we’ve got that, Boston. Always have, frankly. But now, in the age of insta-everything, we have the pictures, stories, and—God knows—talent at our fingertips, too, all through the power of social media. Building that digital narrative are the city’s top-five Instagram stars—some names you’ll recognize, others you need to know. Read. Like. Share.

NO FILTER IG BOSTON | PHOTOGRAPHY @igboston

Meet the city’s coolest and chicest mega-stars who are making social media— and Boston—the scenes to be seen in. BY LISA PIERPONT

To everything there is a season. The squad of sure-shot photographers behind IG Boston knows this better than most. Their work is a highly curated Instagram-only collection tracked by 45,000-plus followers; members who submit photographs must be approved by four moderators (represented here by Mic L. Angelo, a hip-hop artist, MIT IT expert, and consummate photographer). The theme? Dazzling images of beauty: asymmetrical cityscapes, peaks of color-pop foliage, snow-drenched cobblestone streets, surf-worthy beaches, a single spring tulip… All of Boston and her many moods. Turn, turn, turn. Selection process: The four of us have to agree on the shot and if it is worthy enough to represent the entire IG community. We want to cultivate great photographers. We want people to inspire each other. Exclusivity: We have 462 members right now, [selected from] 7,000 applicants. The moderators are impartial and cannot post their own work. Founding cause: [Photography hobbyist] Brian McWilliams founded IG Boston out of his love for Boston and photography. The IG Boston look: We look for the kinds of photos you won’t see posted anywhere else, because those are the kinds of photos that only a resident of Boston would know about. We want to create an intimate feeling. The analog element: We are working on more [nondigital outputs]. We’ve had a gallery exhibit where all of our photographers submitted photos and we showcased them. We’ve held panel discussions, too. Insta-insights: A lot of it is just knowing what kind of theme you have and sticking to it. Knowing what your audience likes. Being careful about when you post—people look at a feed only at certain times of the day. Be consistent with your captions. And the hashtags you use are very important. Best city locations: I love nighttime images and sunrises. You can’t miss along the Charles River, especially on the Cambridge side and around the BU Bridge. Newbury Street and the Back Bay are always great places to shoot. IG goals: We are interested in making IG Boston more of a social force within the New England social scene, having it be a focal point where people can go for work or to find an awesome photographer. FAN FAVORITE ALY RAISMAN | SPORTS @alyraisman

As if her multi-flip, flyaway dismounts weren’t enough, gymnast and Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman also kills it with kindness. The Needham native was named US team captain in two Olympics (London, in 2012, and Rio last summer) for good reason. Plus, the lass really knows how to dress up. It all makes for more than 2.2 million Instagram followers, a number growing by the nano-second.

Life after the Olympics: I’ve been extremely lucky to experience so many amazing opportunities since the Games. I met the President and First Lady, attended the VMAs, had a [televised] lip sync battle with Simone Biles and Olivia Munn, appeared on Ellen with my parents, went to fashion week, presented at the CMTs to Carrie Underwood… To name just a few! Keys to success: Hard work, dedication, sacrifice, a love for what you do, an amazing support system, and confidence. Cult of personality: It’s important to be a good role model for the younger generation. Social media is a huge part of everyone’s lives; I make sure to post content that sends a positive message and is consistent with my beliefs and values. Social network: I want my fans to be inspired to dream big and find something they love. I want people to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin and not compare themselves to others. I like to re-post their content, especially if they’re wearing my signature GK Elite (gkelite .com) leotard line or FEAT (featsocks.com) sock line, or if they have something inspiring to say. Top image: My favorite images are of course from the Olympic Games. The image of me overcome with emotion following the individual all-around finals, where I won silver, is pretty memorable. At that moment, all of the hard work and preparation paid off, and even though I got second to my teammate, I knew it was the best I could do, so that silver was like winning gold. Boston sports: My favorite thing about Boston are the sports fans. Boston has the best fans in the world—I love how it’s such a passionate sports city. So thank you, Boston, for all the love! THE FEED JAMIE BISSONNETTE | FOOD @jamiebiss

How do you begin to describe chef Jamie Bissonnette? While “food lover,” “reality show star,” and “entrepreneur” are good starts, “creative genius” and “zesty humorist” certainly round out the menu. Chef and co-owner of Toro, Coppa, and his newest eatery, Little Donkey, Bissonnette also cooks up a social media storm to his 45,000-plus followers. On food: I love food. Food is good. I grew up intrigued by food and flavors. In the restaurants, seeing the reaction of people eating food we have cooked for them is a driving, intangible thing for me. Business development: Partnering with Ken Oringer helped me in my cooking, and in seeing the ways to make a business successful. Having a partner that can teach and push me, as well as listen and collaborate, has been the key to our growth and success. Public face: Social media, for me, is all about sharing and having fun. I want the look [of my feed] to be like a DIY zine, and the feel to be inviting and fun. Insta-inspo: I love to set up events and [try] new dishes. It’s

like the sneak-peak into a menu sometimes. I think the most memorable moment was the first time a guest came in and asked for a dish using an Instagram post. I was stoked. City satisfaction: I love seeing what’s happening at the farmers’ markets, and when I discover an off-the-beaten-track restaurant, bar, or spa I didn’t know about. And I love, love, love seeing what other restaurants are serving. The Boston larder: My favorites include New Saigon Sandwich for Vietnamese iced coffee, sandwiches, and spring rolls; Gracenote Coffee (gracenotecoffee.com) in the mornings; Mike & Patty’s (mikeandpattys.com) for breakfast sandwiches; New Golden Gate for late-night Chinese food; Townsman (townsmanboston.com) for a glass of wine and meat-and-cheese board; Uni (uni-boston.com) for a blowout sushi evening; and Eastern Standard (easternstandardboston.com) for providing a dope wine list until 1:45 am! Fashion illustrator Holly Nichols attributes all of her formidable, sudden success to the forces of social media. The founder of Holly Nichols Illustration, Nichols owns a studio and online shop but also whips up social media campaigns for the likes of Saks Fifth Avenue, Disney, and Barneys New York, among others, sharing her creations all the time to her 544,000 followers. Nichols says her online popularity happened quickly, even accidentally. We say it’s no surprise at all. Dual-purpose: I combined my two passions, fashion and art. My goal is for my work to allow people to enjoy fashion in a unique way. It eliminates the dressing room struggles that many women face, and lets them enjoy fashion on paper instead. Growing a business: My business developed by accident. My account started as a way to document my portfolio. Soon I was being asked by the public about where they could purchase my work, and getting inquiries from brands on how they could work with me. Soon after, I quit my day job. I can

happily say I’m living my dream of being a full-time professional artist! The look: My social feed is very clean and consistent. I try to photograph everything in bright, filter-free, natural light so that the viewer can clearly see my artwork in its true colors. I want them to feel like they’re at my desk sketching with me. Going viral: There’s a lot of thought behind each post. I figured out the best way to leverage the right hashtag, content, posting schedule, and who to follow—that’s important, too. You certainly have to be disciplined about it. Visibility: I get almost all of my opportunities through social media. Even less than 10 years ago, artists had to work for years to get their work noticed. Now, it can happen as soon as you hit share. Most memorable moment: Without a doubt, it was going to New York Fashion Week with TRESemmé and being able to sketch looks from the actual runway instead of from behind my desk. It was an absolute dream. Best comment: “Wow, her legs are long.” Favorite refuge: The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (gardnermuseum.org). I always notice something I missed [previously] every time I visit. Plus, the gardens are simply an artist’s dream. Also, Blick Art Materials (dickblick.com) for my pens. It’s my candy store! THE CROWDSOURCER BREK.ONE | MUSIC @brekone

You heard it here first: DJ Brek. One is going places—mostly in the night, and always with a playlist. The UMass Amherst graduate never imagined making a living out of deejaying, nor did he predict utilizing a social media platform on which his fans and competitors—he currently has more than 2,000 followers—could study his every move. But now, the unimaginable is coming to life. The recipe: I mix it up. When I started, no one would play a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, then Stevie Wonder, then Kanye, then Prince, and just throw everything out there in one party. I play musical icons. Good music is ageless music.

Owning the night: I’m probably like the top-booked guy in the city at this point. I play all the major venues: Royal, Bijou, Cure, Good Life, and Middlesex will forever have a place in my heart. I was the music curator for the W hotel. I also played for Pharrell in Vegas, and for Kanye and Jay Z for the Watch the Throne tour. Virtual socializing: I look to make my social media my brand [for] when you can’t speak to me [directly]. It’s colorful, very particular, and specific. I want people to understand that I’m delivering the highest quality of product. It’s chosen, mindful; it may be in-the-moment, but it’s still representative of me 10 years from now. My end goal is creating bespoke and very real experiences. Musical outlets: I’m actually a huge jazz fan. I’ll hit Wally’s Café (wallyscafe.com) and Scullers in Cambridge (scullersjazz.com). I love to hear other DJs at Middlesex, because they’re like a neighborhood nightclub that’s not the neighborhood nightclub. Style raves: I am definitely a sneaker freak! I love Concepts (cncpts.com) and Bodega (bdgastore.com). My favorite new store now is All Too Human (alltoohumanboston.com). For more on Brek. One’s best of Boston, go to bostoncommon-magazine.com.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUGLAS FRIEDMAN

Celebrity interior designer and bon vivant Ken Fulk, 51, has spent the past 15 years creating gorgeous spaces and lavish parties—featuring performers such as Dita Von Teese and Sting—for clients ranging from designer Jean Paul Gaultier to social media titan Sean Parker. His new book, Mr. Ken Fulk’s Magical World (Abrams, $75), showcases his interior design expertise, architectural knowhow, and party-throwing sass. We asked Fulk, who often jets to Provincetown from his San Francisco home, to give us the lowdown on throwing a smashing holiday event. Why Provincetown? I first visited Provincetown in my early twenties, and I have continued my love affair with this heartbreakingly beautiful sliver of sand at the tip of Cape Cod ever since. How do you approach throwing parties? I design a party in the same way I design a home or restaurant—both are truly about the experience more than the aesthetic. I consider the “moments” that happen as you walk through a space and encounter different rooms and areas. There should be

I wanted it to be more personal—almost like a scrapbook—and to share the story of how my life and my business evolved from something that I simply loved to do into a magical world in which we get to create everything from restaurant identities and hotel lobbies to incredible estates and extraordinary wedding weekends. Any pro tips? Spend time crafting your guest list—and, if it’s a seated dinner, your seating arrangement. One month it could be haute couture; the next, inventive frozen treats. You just never know with The Shop, a pop-up shop space open through January at the corner of Newbury and Dartmouth Streets that hosts a variety of ever-rotating businesses, ranging from traditional retail shops to wacky concept stores. Created by Isenberg Projects and Jamestown Properties, The Shop doesn’t just provide clients with a space and fixtures, but also offers guidance. Deliberately designed with a minimalist, neutral aesthetic, the space can be customized by each retailer, and was launched in mid-October with high street fashion courtesy of Wellesley boutique Gretta Luxe. “The space has great curb appeal, and the location and timing was perfect for us,” says Gretta Luxe’s Lauren Begley. “Plus, we were [able] to recreate our Wellesley boutique’s atmosphere, which is elevated-chic [but] also inviting and cozy. We brought in [our own] rugs, leather furniture, grey shelving units, and mannequins.” Next up, The Shop will host men’s and women’s apparel retailer Brunswick Park (November 21–27), athleisure line York Athletics (November 28–December 4), gelato and sorbet producer Gelato Fiasco (December 5–11), and high-end boutique hotelier Lark Hotels (December 12–18). “Many people are daunted by the undertaking of opening their own pop-up,” says Emily Isenberg of Isenberg Projects. “We wanted to take that learning experience and marry it to an active space to share that with clients.” Call it a win for all! 144 Newbury St.; isenbergprojects.com

WHITE MOUNTAIN STATE MASSACHUSETTS’S BEST SKIING? IT’S IN VERMONT. BY FALON MORAN

108  BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM

During winter, the “Green Mountain State” of Vermont is anything but: It is, quite literally, snowwhite. And that is a good thing. Killington, Stowe, and Sugarbush resorts, all in Vermont, offer some of the best skiing and premier winter amenities this side of Aspen, and all under three and a half hours from Boston by car. Here we take a look at the skiing but also the shopping, lodging, eating, drinking—that is, not just skiing but living the ski life.

STOWE MOUNTAIN RESORT

Stowe provides the whole package: five-star accommodations, renowned restaurants, and, of course, fabulous skiing. “Stowe is a different animal,” says resort staffer and longtime skier Jeff Wise. “It’s a real mountain, a real town.” Stay: Stowe Mountain Lodge (7412 Mountain Road, Stowe, VT, 802-2533560; destinationhotels.com) boasts a grand community lobby, top-tier luxury suites, a wellness center and spa, and ski-in and -out access.

Shop: Gear up in the newest Kjus and Bogner ski wear at First Chair Alpine Company (Spruce Peak, 7320 Mountain Road, Stowe, VT, 877-977-7823; sprucepeak.com). 112  BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM

Ten years ago, Jack Ryde, the late fourth-generation owner of Swedish bed manufacturer Hästens, set out to create the greatest bed in the world. That sweet dream came true with the company’s blue-checked masterpiece: Vividus. “When we launched Vividus, we never intended for it to be a bed that stops evolving,” says Jan Ryde, Jack’s son and Hästens’ current owner and executive chairman. This fall, the company re-launches its flagship bed, whose construction requires 320 hours of work from four certified craftsmen focused on every detail, from the northern Swedish redwood frame to the hand-sewn layers of

horsehair, cotton, and wool in the customized bodycontouring mattress. The piece is quite literally fit for a king—Hästens was appointed Purveyor to H.M. the King of Sweden in 1952 and has served as official supplier to the Swedish Royal Court ever since—and carries a stately $140,000 price tag. For many, though, getting the world’s greatest sleep every night is worth the price. “My first night in the new Vividus was like rediscovering sleep, which was profound even for me— someone who has grown up with Hästens in my DNA,” says Ryde. “It’s the finest bed we’ve ever made.” 244 Newbury St., Ste. 101, 617992-6908; hastens.com

HEAVY METALS

From the gold-draped rooms of the Palace of Versailles to the Victorian glamour of the Gilded Age, a bit of shine has always been de rigueur in smart interiors. But for the holiday season, especially, a touch of metal can make a space infinitely more alluring and festive. Here, Bostonbased interior designer and antiques dealer Heidi Pribell casts her discerning eye on the current metallic rage, breaking it down in two: the pieces with a Midas touch and those with a silver streak. THE SKYLINE CLUB IN THE MARKET FOR A LUXURY APARTMENT? THESE MIGHT WORK. BY TONYA MEZRICH

Panoramic views, state-of-the-art gyms, five-star concierge services— what’s not to love? Three luxury residence buildings offer Bostonians a spanking-new brand of lush living that comes with loaned-out scooters, dog spas, Meile-applianced kitchens, and on and on... and on.

Better together: The Pierce’s top floor will be reserved for a “penthouse” common area in which all guests can enjoy 360-degree views.

“TODAY’S FULL-SERVICE BUILDINGS CATER TO THE LUXURY RESIDENT LOOKING FOR SOMETHING EDGIER.” —LESLIE COHEN

You may rent for life after experiencing 30 Dalton’s commitment to day-to-day poshness, starting with its location: “The nexus of the South End, Back Bay, and Fenway,” says General Manager Alissa Kekeisen. The Stats: Two hundred and eighteen luxury rental units (including two duplex penthouse suites aptly named The Charles and The Fenway), 26 floors, three elevators. The Design: Interiors decorated by Cambridge Seven Associates, with KitchenAid appliances in standard units and Miele in the two penthouses. Exterior designed by Pei Cobb Freed, the same architect behind the Four Seasons next door, which is slated to open in 18 months. The Perks: A dog spa, monthly “yappy hour” dog parties, “loanables” (picnic baskets, scooters, phone chargers, etc.), a community library, business center, 24-hour gym, and building-appointed personal trainer. The Icing: The Skyline Suite, a 26th-floor amenity space with sweeping views of Boston, triple-high ceilings, a billiards table, bar, and an outdoor terrace—with heaters and blankets with which to enjoy those chilly winter nights. 30 Dalton St., 877-431-1073; 30dalton.com

SPACE CARNOISSEUR Cleans up nice! While honoring its rugged, offroad heritage, the 2017 Range Rover Sport has evolved from its spartan beginnings: High-tech amenities like lane-departure warnings and automated emergency braking come standard, with more active-safety tech add-ons available.

WITHIN RANGE THE 2017 RANGE ROVER SPORT TAPS INTO ITS BOSTON-RUGGED SIDE.

When the first Range Rovers rolled out in the UK nearly fifty years ago, they were built for off-road domination. Allwheel drive. Guerilla-grip suspension. Vinyl seats. Plastic dash. If their interiors got dirty, drivers could just hose them down. This utilitarian design was thanks to a WWII-era jet-engine pioneer named

Charles King, who had by then set the land-speed record by strapping a jet engine to a car. Rugged as they were, King’s early Range Rovers were so highly regarded that they quickly landed in the Louvre as masterpieces of industrial design. The Queen of England bought one, and, to his chagrin, King’s hulking

120  BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM

globetrotters were quickly domesticated for the English gentry. “To use them for the school run, or even in cities or towns at all, is completely stupid,” King told a London newspaper before his death, in 2010. While he might be rolling in his grave knowing Range Rover remains synonymous with luxury,

King could take some comfort in the fact that the latest generation of Range Rover, the 2017 Sport, has honored its rugged roots. The Supercharged model hums with a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine that packs more than 500 horsepower—ready to dominate much more than just pavement. On the dash, a computer serves as

an “All-Terrain Info Center,” allowing an operator to maximize the SUV’s off-road performance. So while you may not want to drive up the side of a volcano, with the Range Rover Sport, at least you know you can. From $81,645. It’s critical that all of us recycle properly. In fact did you know, recycling right is the #1 thing we can do to help the environment and the economy? But let’s face it, it’s not always easy to know what items go in which bin. That's why there is now a national movement to begin displaying standardized labels on bins ... to help people recycle more and help people recycle right. The standardized labels are proving to increase recycling levels by 50-100% and to help people recycle right!
