A SPECIAL LIGHT COME SPRING, BOSTON IS AGLOW WITH GALAS AND GARDENS. BY JARED BOWEN
May means party season in this town, right on through June (then, the champagne is uncorked on the islands). While Boston’s glitteratti are hitting the social scene, photographer Jeremy Barnard captures the city in a different light. With his recent series,
Beyond Our Vision, Barnard delivers us into a gossamer world. Trees along the esplanade shout with an epic radiance. Water pools like the delicate ripples of silk. The skies are painterly, moody, and otherworldly. The images you see here are the

product of his work with infrared—a process by which the camera blocks most of what’s seen on the visible light spectrum and only captures infrared light. “To be able to reveal this unseen world is exciting,” Barnard says. Since the 1960s Barnard
has focused on what his idol Henri Cartier-Bresson did: street scenes... empty expanses: visions of a world out of sight, but within reach. Unseen: Photography Beyond the Visible is showing April 20–May 13 at the Providence Center for the

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
AHOY, THERE, BOSTON! The city is cruising big time this season. The Tall Ships will be anchored in Boston Harbor (I’m totally signing up for a behind-the-scenes tour on day one) and a lineup of knee-slapping comedians like Hannibal Buress and Pete Holmes in a comedy experience for the ever-expanding Boston Calling Festival. On the society front, smashing philanthropist Simone Winston will be honored on May 1 at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s Boston Hot Pink Party at the Intercontinental Boston. At the Boston Center for the Arts Ball on June 3 at the Cyclorama, guests will be dazzled by the city’s best performers. And on May 17, I will be wearing a big, blooming hat at Party in the Park to celebrate the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, and life in general. That’s in the outside world. For my inside world, May and June mean dolling up the house for my posse. There’s groovy orange pillows to update our couches, cans of cobalt paint to trick up the hallway, and hand-crafted table settings to wow my guests. I picked up these pointers thanks to the band of experts who loaned their guidance and insights for our special home issue. Building firms like FBN Construction, Morehouse MacDonald, and Woodmeister, along with interior designer Steven Favreau and world-class events planer Bryan Rafanelli, each generously shared the tricks of their trade for this issue. Boston thanks you, and God knows, so does my house.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
SPRING IS HERE, AND WARMER DAYS ARE AHEAD! From the Boston Marathon to the Red Sox home opener and all the events that are happening, the city feels alive with energy and excitement. The Tall Ships are sailing into town from June 17–22, with Fan Pier serving as the main hub of attractions and activities. I’ll be enjoying many of the waterfront restaurants as I watch the amazing boats cruise by. Speaking of events, I’m honored once again to be one of the “Men in Pink” at the Boston Hot Pink Party to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This issue of Boston Common marks our 2nd annual home issue. To celebrate, we will be partnering with the Boston Design Center to honor all things “home,” including interior design, real estate, builders, architecture, and landscapes. We welcome our cover star, model and actress Charlotte McKinney, who will be riding in this year’s Best Buddies Challenge, taking place on June 3. She’s been involved with the organization for over seven years, but this will be her first-time participating in the Cape Cod ride for Team Tom Brady. We are looking ahead to summer, weekend getaways, and all things New England! I look forward to seeing you around town…

Co-chaired by Hannah Grove and Alison Quirk, the evening raised $1.8 million for Boston Ballet and its community programs. The Paddle Auction supported programs that reach more than 4,000 children and adults through nationally recognized programs such as Citydance and Adaptive Dance. TOTALLY RIGGED THE TALL SHIPS ARE BACK WITH A BOOM BOOM EXTRAVAGANZA ON BOSTON HARBOR WITH SAIL BOSTON.

Whatever you know about sailing will likely be tossed overboard once you’ve met Esmeralda, the Chilean with a heart of steel, or Alexander Humboldt III, a colorful German full of one-liners. We’re talking sloops here, folks, and they will be docking in the Boston Harbor with dozens of other tall ships for a five-day full-on nautical spectacle. “The RendezVous Tall Ships Regatta is an event that has only happened three times in Boston,” says Sail Boston project director Dusty Rhodes. “It takes six years alone just to coordinate with all of the foreign navies.” There will be schooners from the Netherlands, a barque from Ecuador, a fully-rigged vessel from Russia, and many others. The 7,000-nautical-mile Regatta begins in Royal Greenwich and ends in Quebec City, tracing the routes of the great explorers through six countries, including Portugal, the Canary Islands, and Bermuda. Half way through the race, when they anchor in Boston from June 17–22, four million visitors are expected to join in the fun.
The majestic Tall Ships, under sail, will gather in Broad Sound prior to their grand entrance into Boston’s inner harbor for the Parade of Sail.

SCENE CELEBRATION Maritime educational programs for kids, meet and greets with sailors, ship tours, and soirées are among a fleet of cool activities. As Rhodes puts it, “You really can’t imagine something of this magnitude until you see it.” For instance, the length of the all of the ships is 6,238 feet—that’s eight Prudential Tower buildings! The oldest vessel, the Europa, was built in 1911, and 2,000 crew members will fill the streets of Boston. To help you navigate the waters, we’ve broken down the can’t-miss events for you. PHOTO OP

Where do you find your inspiration for your lighting fixtures? “I find inspo in pottery, patterns, and colors that are trending in fabric and furniture—they translate to lighting as well.” How can we use lighting to kick-start a new spring look? “Push out any lighting that you don’t love. And then I’d say make sure you have lighting at all different levels in your home. If you have both overhead lighting and table lamps, you have a choice about what kind of ambience you want to set.” What are the elements of style? After all, your mantra is “live life beautifully”… “My favorite spaces are ones that really tell a story about who lives there. My least favorite kinds of spaces are ones that look like hotel rooms, or like you’re too scared to sit down anywhere. Style is super personal and I always love spaces that reflect individuality.” Available at TJ Maxx, 360 Newbury St., 617-867-4180; elementsofstyleblog.com

Bryan Rafanelli isn’t a namedropper, so one has to be patient before the world-renowned founder of Boston-based Rafanelli Events shares that he produced Chelsea Clinton’s wedding, Allison Williams’ nuptials, President Obama’s most prestigious events, and more than a few of Matt Damon’s family gatherings. Regarded as one of the world’s best wedding planners, the Rhode Island native just launched a sparkling new website for all to interact with his magical world. The goal. I want a guest to walk out of a celebration and think, “Wow, they definitely awed me. They taught me something I didn’t know.” Find the unique. We work really hard to find the connection with our clients—people want to have their own experience, not one that’s manufactured. The arrival is when… You get to surprise the guest. It could mean going down the alley instead of the front door. We can even reinvent the alley—for Batman it’s dark, for Winnie the Pooh it’s yellow, bright, and fun. Then there’s the reveal. What’s the next change from cocktails to dinner? It could be lighting, food, sound. But it’s also about movement and time. You better keep it fresh and moving. That is signature Rafanelli. That nothing is the same. 867 Boylston St., 617-357-1818; rafanellievents.com

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK’S DIANNE GUERRERO HONORS HER PAST AND A FUTURE WITH THE BOSTON ARTS ACADEMY.
“THE SCHOOL TAUGHT ME TO FIGHT WITH MY ART.” —diane guerrero
One day after school, Dianne Guerrero returned home to Jamaica Plain to an empty house. Her parents had been deported to Colombia. The 14-year-old was traumatized. When she returned to school at the Boston Arts Academy, the teachers and students took on a life-changing role for her. “I got a sense of community at the Academy,” says Guerrero. “They took care of me.” Guerrero, who now stars on Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin, credits much of her acting success to the support and skills she learned at the academy. “It was a huge way to learn where I came from and why I was living some of the experiences I was living.” On May 23, the Boston Arts Academy will unveil its first gala at the Museum of Fine Arts called the Apollo Dinner Cabaret. Guerrero, who recently published her memoir, In the Country We Love: My Family Divided, will be honored with the 2017 Apollo Award. Headmaster Anne Clark says Guerrero encompassed everything she wants her students to take away from BAA, “Diane had a clear sense of justice. A true artist has a purpose, a vision for self and community.” The Gala has a purpose, too. “Its focus is on festivity and fun, and to showcase the students’ talents,” says Academy director Duncan RemageHealey. The academy’s rising stars will perform throughout the evening of music, movement, and dinner. For Guerrero, the evening will be an especially bittersweet reunion. “The school taught me to fight with my art. WHITE HOT JONATHAN SI HAI BRINGS HIS ROMANTIC-CHIC DESIGNS AND PHILOSOPHY TO SAKS FIFTH AVENUE.
“I want women to feel modern, fearless, and romantic,” Parsons graduate and former buyer Jonathan Simkhai says of his design vision for women everywhere. Bostonians got a taste of this at Saks Fifth Avenue as the designer sat with shoppers to offer style advice and toast his best spring collection yet. Simkhai’s ethereal designs and feminine sensibility led him to win the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in 2015, which not only paved the way to expand into new categories like eveningwear and swim, allowing for exploration into embellishments and new offerings for spring (think pearl-distressed denim), but ultimately drove his creative vision. “I wanted to show that clothes and the women wearing

them can look strong and delicate at the same time,” he says of his collection. Inspired by the Watts Towers in LA, his latest pieces offer a monumental but airy aesthetic—something that he hopes Boston’s style-set can add to their wardrobes. “Her style is very classic, emphasizing on silhouettes and quality,” Simkhai says of the Boston shopper. “I’d love to see her play with fun patterns and small details in her wardrobe.” His advice to update the New Englander’s fixation on silhouettes? “The pearl t-dress is perfect,” he says of the classic shape and fun pearl detailing. JUST TRY AND PUT THIS BOOK DOWN FIRST-TIME AUTHOR JEANNE BLASBERG WRITES A BEACON HILL PAGE-TURNER.
From her Harvard Business School provenance to her ascendance in the world of US squash, Jeanne Blasberg knows how to achieve. So when the revelation of a long-held family secret got her asking some “what-ifs” about her own life, Blasberg didn’t hesitate to take on the title of first-time author. “I always played these different scenarios around in my head,” explains the Beacon
Hill resident, until eventually they formed the core of Eden, a page-turning family saga revolving around the impending loss of a New England summer home, matriarchy gone astray, long lost children, and a squandered family fortune. The goal: “I wanted to write about how things repeat themselves through the generations of a family,
64 BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM
and at the same time, how the circumstances for women in the 20th century have changed so rapidly.” The setting: The book takes place at an intergenerational summer home, where an affluent family has worked very hard to keep up appearances. “The house is called Eden,” explains Blasberg. “It’s all about unattainable paradise.” True to life? “Early on, I was
told that this book can’t be an autobiographical exercise in which you’re dealing with your issues, because that will come across and nobody will want to read it.” The takeaway: “I wrote the book to honor the unspoken voices and unheard stories of women who lived the generation or two before me.” Launch Party: Harvard Book Store, 1256 Massachusets Ave., May 19, 7 pm

LA VIE EN ROSÉ CELEBRATING THE 10TH VINTAGE OF ITS BUZZY FLAGSHIP ROSÉ, CHÂTEAU D’ESCLANS BRINGS A TASTE OF ST-TROPEZ TO THE STATES.
Great wine hinges on four elements, says rosé producer Sacha Lichine, the bon vivant owner of St-Tropez winery Château d’Esclans: the soil (that ineffable quality called terroir), the grapes, the climate, and, finally, the winemaker, whose craft harmonizes all the other elements. The problem, he adds, is that rosé is the most difficult wine to make well. Luckily for Château d’Esclans, Lichine is perhaps the most prominent producer in the world. Ten years ago, winemakers, restaurants, and distributors could barely give rosé away. But exports of Provençal rosé to the US increased by more than 900 percent between 2006 and 2015, with a 58 percent increase between 2014 and 2015 alone. Now in its 10th vintage, Château d’Esclans’s flagship rosé, Whispering Angel, has come to epitomize the classic dry Provençal style. Much of the complexity is owed to bâtonnage, whereby fine lees, or dead yeast cells, are stirred back into the wine, while new technologies, including advanced refrigeration systems and pneumatic presses, keep the processing precise, all crucial to the production of “a product that is very easy to make average,” Lichine says. “The perception of rosé in America has changed dramatically,” says Aldo Sohm, chef sommelier at New York’s Le Bernardin, whose acclaimed wine program is central to its three Michelin stars. “There’s a real following of rosé now, which didn’t exist a few years ago.” Perhaps Château d’Esclans’s greatest achievement, says Lichine, has been creating wines whose experiences are evocative of St-Tropez itself—clean, crisp, sophisticated, and fun. “What we’ve done,” he says, “is create a taste.”

Think pink! Château d’Esclans’s Whispering Angel epitomizes the classic dry style of Provence, where the wine has been produced for 2,600 years, and continues to lead the growth of rosé’s booming popularity in the US.

COLOR CODING LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE! TOP INTERIOR DESIGNER STEVEN FAVREAU IS MAKING BOSTON A MORE COLORFUL PLACE. BY LISA PIERPONT
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: The colorcrazy entryway sets the stage for the rest of this Vermont home; Steven Favreau; Lilacs and blues contrast against a varied palette of beige to create an elegant and comfy space; bursts of blue are folded into a calm neutral color scheme.
Why color? Color is the safest place to start. It’s the easiest investment: you can just have a wall painted! Once you start living with color, you don’t go back. But you are not safe, Steven! You like to take design risks. Yeah, I’m fearless. I like to bring in details that clients would never expect. On a color wheel, for example, it’s about opposites. So the compliment of green is red. I would do an off-green with an off-red. You believe that there is an emotional connection with color. Give us an example of how that applies to a living space. We know that red stimulates the appetite and passion, right? So red in a dining room is perfect. It’s romantic and sexy and makes you hungry. But folks should start small—take baby steps so they are comfortable. I would also recommend creating story boards so you can see how each room balances with the other. If the world is a stage, Steven Favreau has performed in about every arena. The Massachusettsborn interior designer has professionally danced at the Moulin Rouge, competed on HGTV reality shows, and is shooting his first TV pilot. But his star may shine its brightest in the home, and definitely takes on the most colors. Here, Favreau explains his unique perspective on interior design—how and why color is essential to domestic bliss.

FORGET RENOVATION. TWO TOP REAL ESTATE BROKERS REVEAL THE BIGGEST TREND NOW IS NEW. BY LISA PIERPONT
Metro-west Boston is hot! Open houses are fetching some 175 prospective buyers, and 63 offers on a single home are the new normal. We asked Coldwell Banker’s Tom Aaron and Traci Shulkin of Benoit, Mizner, Simon & Co to share their insights. What do your buyers want? Shulkin: We are seeing a lot of young buyers and older folks who are downsizing. The young buyers want to be close to a town center. They like to be able to walk to coffee and go to dinner. Aaron: Definitely younger buyers who want an urban feel. They do not want to do renovations. They want new. Any new bells and whistles? Shulkin: Having a nice master bedroom and bath are what really sells the house. They still want the big family room, but the 70 BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM
master setup has to be there. Aaron: They want the high ceilings, the walk-in closets, newer heating system, the Energy Star ratings. I am also seeing demand for an in-law suite. Any surprises this season? Shulkin: Everything revolves around the new house. Needham is extraordinarily hot now; it’s because you can get a brand new house under $2 million. Aaron: Exactly, it is not about location, location, location anymore. These buyers want a new house—they don’t care where it is. They don’t want to deal with ongoing maintenance issues. They want easy living. Traci Shulkin: Benoit, Mizner, Simon & Co., 617-939-6309; tracishulkin.com Tom Aaron: Coldwell Banker, 781-239-9090; coldwellbankerhomes.com

RIGHT BRAIN, LEFT BRAIN HE’S AN ENGINEER; SHE’S A DESIGNER. TOGETHER, THEY MAKE THE DIVINE DESIGN CENTER. BY LISA PIERPONT
What do your clients prioritize? Mariette: They want quality and service. They don’t have time to shop around, but once they find you they trust you to do everything. You travel all over the world for your furniture buys. What design trends are your clients responding to the most? Magued: We travel to Spain, Germany, and Italy primarily for the best in kitchen and bathroom equipment and furniture. Clients want simpler lines, but choose pieces that offer a lot of functionality. Mariette: We have kitchen countertops that rise to different heights and can be converted into a dining table. One of our most exclusive pieces is a glass wall in which photographs—family, landscapes— can be imprinted into the glass. What do Bostonians particularly like? Mariette: Bostonians have a little bit of glamour. They definitely invest in their homes to be comfortable, and with very high quality materials. They don’t show their “life” off on the outside, but they enjoy it inside the privacy of their house. 2 Battery Wharf, 617-443-0700; divinedesigncenter.com

HED MAURIS CONSEQUAT HIGH FIVE AT NISL EGET SEMPER. THE 2017 AUDI PELLESQUE ALIQUAM, Q5 RAISES THE NUNC SITBAR BOSTON ELEFOR MENT MIDSIZE SUVS.
Listen intently. That’s what Audi means in Latin. The German automaker’s name came about when founder August Horch left Horch & Co. in 1909, but couldn’t take his car company’s title with him. So instead he translated his last name into Latin and founded Audi, a word that’s since become synonymous with luxury,
elegance, and sophistication. Yet take one look at its latest offering, the 2017 Q5, and another superlative rings true: Audi still has quite an ear for harmonious design. A leader in the crossover class, the Q5 exemplifies off-road might with city smarts. Thanks to a new adaptive air suspension system, this
74 BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM
midsize SUV transitions seamlessly from throttling over dirt roads to navigating pot-holed pavement. Indeed, if the Q5 played for the Celtics, it would be Isaiah Thomas—this car is on the ball and seriously handles. Yet perhaps its most novel innovation, as far as Bostonians are concerned anyway, comes to aid in
the worst of times. Picture bumper to bumper traffic on the Mass Pike. Instead of having to endure the ankle-aching stop-andstart, one can simply flip on the Q5’s traffic jam assist to autonomously navigate through the congestion. If only all horn-happy Massholes could drive the Q5, Boston might shed its
regretful reputation as the road rage capital of the East Coast. Of course, all of these innovations were unthinkable when August Horch first launched Audi more than a century ago. And yet the founder’s name still drives the design as Audi continues to listen intently to what drivers want. audioffers.com

“I’M ALWAYS GOING TO BE SEXY, I’M ALWAYS GOING TO HAVE THOSE PHOTO SHOOTS, BUT I’M REALLY LOOKING FOR DIFFERENT ROLES.”
WALKING DOWN THE STREET, HOLDING ONLY A PAIR OF MELONS, with the eyes of the entire world fixed on you may not be your idea of success. But when you’ve spent the better part of your life being pointed at and whispered about, it’s sweet revenge: 114 million people watched Charlotte McKinney star in a Carl’s Jr. commercial that aired during the New England Patriots-winning Super Bowl. Growing up, McKinney lived anything but the glamorous life. Bullied for her voluptuous figure at a young age, she embraced those assets and became an international sensation. McKinney will appear in no fewer than five movies in a one-year span, including May’s much-anticipated Baywatch (with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and Mad Families (opposite Charlie Sheen), as well as films costarring Kiefer Sutherland and Harvey Keitel. She’s also headlining the Guess Spring 2017 campaign with Joe Jonas. On June 3, the 23-year-old will wear her philanthropic hat, joining Tom Brady to compete in the Best Buddies Challenge, raising funds for the world’s largest nonprofit supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. And she’s making sure to fit in some serious seafood during her visit to Boston. How did you become involved with Best Buddies? I got involved when I was 15 years old. Best Buddies offered their club in my school in Orlando, Florida. During lunch, I would see the Best Buddies Club members always having a good time. So, one day I approached them and sat with them. I’ve volunteered ever since and have created amazing memories. Recently, I surprised a buddy at his prom and went as his date. Working with Best Buddies just fulfills me! What’s the plan of attack for the Best Buddies Challenge? I will be doing the 20-mile bike ride. I am excited! It’s my second time back to Boston, and I have never attended the Challenge on the Cape. I think it will be amazing to support the Boston efforts with Tom Brady and others who are involved. You had a tough time in school. Why? I had really bad dyslexia and I was failing. My parents were freaking out—what parent wants to hear your kid is dropping out of school and moving to Miami? But in the end, they were helpful and were behind me. They knew I would be successful at whatever I wanted to do. So yes, I was a dropout. Did your classmates give you a hard time? Definitely. I also left school because of all of the bullying. It was just so awful, and that’s why now I use my platform to promote anti-bullying. I try to use what I went through to be a voice for it. Because it’s still happening and getting even worse now with social media. What gave you that confidence to say, “Well, at least I can go model” ? I just knew that from seeing photos and seeing girls, I had what it takes. I knew I could do it. I was a very determined kid, and not only in modeling; I wanted to break into the entertainment industry. Whether it was modeling or acting, I kind of fell in love with it.
Carl’s Jr. certainly catapulted you onto an international stage. I’ve done two commercials for them; the first one was for the Super Bowl and it was just amazing. I was just eating burgers all day, so of course I had to spit some out or else I would have gotten really sick. We had a spit bucket because we used about nine burgers. They really started my career, and it was such a huge spot for me and got me to where I am. You’re starring in a Guess campaign with Joe Jonas, and you were in his music video as well. What’s that relationship like? Our first time working together, I was half naked, kissing in an elevator [in DNCE’s music video for “Body Moves”], so we definitely had to get close really fast. [Joe] is a really sweet guy. He’s just a lot of fun. I think we work together really well. Guess certainly has had some iconic women as the face of the brand, from Anna Nicole Smith to Claudia Schiffer and more. It was huge because it’s a brand that I feel like I belong to the most. Marciano really embraces women’s curves, and to me that’s huge. What was it like working with Charlie Sheen? Mad Families came out this winter, and I play Charlie Sheen’s sister. When I found out Charlie was going to play the character, I was kind of nervous, but then I met him, and working with him has been so much fun. He’s so healthy and so vibrant. He’s such an awesome guy, and I had such a fun time shooting with him. I really learned a lot. Down the line, would you prefer different roles? I think that’s what’s coming in 2017 that I’m really excited about. I’m always going to be sexy, I’m always going to have those photo shoots, but I’m really looking for different roles that aren’t so commercial and are a bit cooler. I hope to be taken a bit more seriously. Are you dating? I’m single right now and really enjoying it. A lot of times when I’m in a relationship, I am focusing on the other person so much. Now I can focus on my work and focus on me. Back to your visit to Boston—what are you looking forward to? One of my favorite places is Legal Sea Foods restaurant. I am a huge seafood lover. I think it will be one of my highlights of Boston. Seafood was always an option. And I love the Boston Commons park area. I’ve had a nice long walk there and enjoy the full green scene. Any other Boston goals? I would love to really experience a sports game in Boston. I know Boston fans are loyal to all of their teams, so it would be great to experience that energy.

hat’s your fantasy? Come on, dream a little. Actually, dream big. Boston hosts some of the world’s most elite general contractors, architects, landscape artists, and interior designers. They’ve developed two-sided fireplaces on Nevis, sunken gardens in England, majestic master bedrooms in Aspen, and… here! Right in your own backyard. Meet them. Do it. Build that rainbow.
SEA AND BE SEEN
Floor-to-ceiling windows, a sweeping view of Boston Harbor—this waterfront condo had it all. Still, the couple who moved here from their suburban home had to 1) downsize like mad, and 2) customize it to feel like home. That’s when CEO Ted Goodnow of Woodmeister Master Builders came to the rescue. Philosophy: “Our fundamental construction and design team are intrinsically connected,” says Goodnow. “It is the master builder concept; we build everything. When you have consistency with your design team, it puts clients at ease.” Custom Fit: Goodnow’s team built a wooden ceiling to allow for lighting
fixtures, constructed custom closets in the master bedroom, maximized the flow through rooms, and tricked up the master bathroom with luxe cabinetry and hand-crafted storage. Design: “We wanted it to be traditional but with a city twist. Very tailored, very clean,” says interior designer Wendy Valliere, founder of Seldom Scene Interiors. “We chose high-gloss paints to keep it slick, a nautical blue outline, and high-quality, midcentury furniture. Everything revolved around the view.” Woodmeister Master Builders: 1317 Washington St., 617-423-2900; woodmeister.com Seldom Scene Interiors: 2038 Mountain Road, Stowe, VT, 802-253-3770; seldomsceneinteriors.com

SECRET SANCTUARY
This grand home is smack in the middle of a neighborhood of Tudors and Capes, but you’d never know it if you were luxuriating in the backyard or anywhere in the house—exactly the goal of the family who tore down a preexisting home to build their perfect palace. “It needed to fit in, but also needed to reflect the owners’ stylish spirit,” says John MacDonald, cofounder of architectural firm Morehouse MacDonald and Associates.
“WE CREATED A PROPERTY WITH UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE AND A STRONG MASCULINE FEEL.” —john macdonald, morehouse macdonald
92 BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM
The Contract: “We listen hard to our clients. We immerse ourselves in their lives. We go to great lengths make sure everything works together,” says MacDonald. “The end product just shows.” The Build: “We created a property with understated elegance, a strong masculine feel, and classic arts and crafts
architecture,” says MacDonald. A grand fireplace in the kitchen and family room, old-fashioned entry with French doors, and vaulted three-story entry with a flying staircase and inglenook are highlights. “Our houses are a piece of furniture; the materials interact,” adds senior associate Greg Graham. The Yard: Greg Lombardi Design was called in to maximize outdoor space and privacy. “We worked to create walls and terraces that incorporated rich material palettes: bluestone, granite, fieldstone,” says owner Greg Lombardi. “Plantings were done to layer the landscape into various outdoor ‘rooms.’” Morehouse MacDonald and Associates: 3 Bow St., Lexington, 781-861-9500; morehousemacdonald.com Greg Lombardi Design: 2235 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, 617-492-2808; lombardidesign.com

Talk about role reversal. When Bob Ernst, president of FBN Construction, received a phone call from a young couple asking if he could help them move out of the suburbs and into the city to build a townhouse to raise their children, he was floored. “That never happens,” he says. “It’s always the opposite.” Never a man to resist a challenge, Ernst rolled up his sleeves and got to work: a three-floor brownstone right next to the Boston Public Garden. “The couple’s purchase of the property fully depended on whether the renovation could be done to their liking,” says Ernst. Needless to say, the couple bought it. FBN built it. Here’s how it was done. Prep Work: “We didn’t pick up a hammer for a year and a half,” Ernst says. “That is how we work. We first develop an all-inclusive design, architectural and building blueprint, and budget with full transparency. The client knows exactly what will be done and how much it will cost.” Construction: The team designed a family-friendly flow, including a garden-level playroom, open kitchen and family area, and cutting-edge bathrooms. “The family wanted a very modern, fashionable space,” says Ernst. FBN restored and painted existing finishes, upgraded electrical wiring, and installed lighting. Design: C&J Katz Studio added a very light palette to create an airiness and mirrors to expand the space. “The quality of the construction allowed extremely modern finishes and cabinetwork to live side by side with elaborate traditional details,” says cofounder Jeffrey Katz. “Every single light fixture is special; every piece of furniture, new or antique, is an example of exquisite craftsmanship. The whole effect adds up to a warm family home.” FBN Construction: 17 Wolcott Ct., Hyde Park, 617-333-6821; fbnconstruction.net C&J Katz Studio: 60 K St., South Boston, 617-464-0330; candjkatz.com
Italian Calacatta marble was carved into a kitchen counter by TBR Marble and Granite, while cabinets were sourced from Cabinets by Scavolini. above: In this library, extensive prep work was needed to create 21st-century walls. “Seventy-five percent is preparing the framing— making the symmetry work—before anyone picks up a paintbush,” says FBN Construction’s Bob Ernst.

OUR GUIDE TO BOSTON ’S BEST DESIGNS
THE ULTIMATE GETAWAY
The time is now to reacquaint yourself with the Four Seasons Boston. The hotel, which has held Forbes Travel Guide’s Five-Star rating for 18 consecutive years, has a brand new look. Michael Booth, Principal at BAMO, Inc. design studio, recently undertook the major renovation of an 18,000 square foot addition along with a dramatic new Presidential Suite, an expanded food and beverage outlet, and completely redesigned lobby. “From lobby to guestroom, we aimed to create a journey for guests.” says lead designer Alan Deal. “When you arrive at each floor, the mood is dark and sexy. Then, the passage slowly evolves into a calming, neutral palette.” The hotel partnered with Simmons Bedding Company and installed white washed oak headboards with upholstered inset panels to create an ultimate space for relaxation. Overlooking the Boston Public Garden, the Four Seasons Boston continues to stand up to its reputation as a refuge of luxury for residents and guests alike. 200 Boylston Street, 617-3384400; fourseasons.com/boston
