This clean water is much like a Montrachet Grand Cru, only far more valuable.

Why is wine expensive while clean water isn’t? Unlike wine, clean water is something your family, the economy and the Earth can’t live without. The Nature Conservancy’s pragmatic, science-based programs and partnerships keep water clean and accessible, here and around the world. Something to consider the next time you raise a glass or plan your annual giving.

Let’s make every year a good year for water.

CULTURE Talent Patrol His character on The Last Ship is trying to save humanity, but in real life Travis Van Winkle is doing much the same—one school at a time.

The Talented Mr. Van Winkle

Travis Van Winkle spends his hiatus from the last ship serving as an ambassador for the nonprofit buildOn.  by juliet izon

Travis Van Winkle’s golden-boy looks and considerable charm have landed him parts on shows as diverse as The O.C. and Malcolm in the Middle. But as the 32-year-old comes into his own with more mature assignments—including his current role as Lt. Danny Green in the postapocalyptic drama The Last Ship on TNT—he has discovered something within himself: a zeal for service work. “I didn’t grow up doing service,” says Van Winkle. “It was more about me, me, me.” The blue-eyed, towheaded actor spent much of his young adulthood focused on building his career. But a few years ago, after seeing friends find fulfillment in charity work, Van Winkle decided continued on page 50

“I go through a lot of badass action stuff [on the show]. I do a lot of killing, shooting, and fighting. I got a lot of bruises this season from filming.”

Washington gets ready for its close-up in half a dozen new and returning shows.

what he’s watching

“I have been watching and rewatching a documentary called History of the World in Two Hours, because it is so fascinating to go back in time and understand how we became who we are.”

Madam Secretary.

As Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord, Téa Leoni balances a highpressure, top-clearance government position and quality time with her husband and three children, as this popular series begins its sophomore season. Sundays at 8 pm on CBS Homeland. The

darling of Showtime’s Sunday lineup is back following a strong fourth season that relied upon its tried-and-true formula: breathless plotting and a cold indifference to killing off secondary characters. Sundays at 9 pm on Showtime Quantico. This

“[Service work] became something that was healing me, then it sustained me, and now it drives me.”—travis van winkle to try volunteering himself. “It became something that was healing me, and then it sustained me, and now it’s something that drives me,” he says. “Even the Dalai Lama said, ‘The more that we serve others, the more we serve ourselves.’” Van Winkle’s charity of choice is buildOn, which constructs schools in some of the world’s poorest countries. “I had a wonderful friend ask me if I wanted to go build a school two years ago,” he says of his first experience with the organization. That trip, to Malawi, was the first of five that Van Winkle has taken. “The format that buildOn has come up with for this type of service blew my mind,” he says. “You live with the families under the same roof. You eat their foods, and you get to understand their culture. You build this school side by side with them.” Van Winkle’s passion for buildOn has inspired a side project: This fall he and best friend Justin Baldoni are shooting a documentary called

Groundwork, about their service trips. “We’re filming the process of us fundraising and building the school in Malawi,” Van Winkle says. “I put together this amazing crew called Team Hollywood. The whole idea is ‘Can we ever really fix all of the problems in the world?’ No, I don’t think so, but if we take action together, we can definitely make progress.” As if that weren’t enough to keep him busy, the actor will travel to Nepal later this year to help with another buildOn project. Of course, all of this work must occur while he is on hiatus from shooting The Last Ship. Filming takes place in part on an actual Navy vessel, and “the Navy put on a big screening for our pilot episode in DC,” Van Winkle says. “They had a huge party for us, which was a lot of fun.” But his favorite part of the District has a decidedly less Hollywood feel. “Anytime I’m in DC, I go to all the museums. Natural History is my favorite—it covers everything!” buildon.org  CF

freshman ABC series focuses on—what else?— the FBI. Taking place at the bureau’s training base in Quantico, Virginia, it follows a motley group of recruits, some of whom may not be as honorable as they seem. Sundays at 10 pm on ABC

Minority Report.

It’s a sci-fi lover’s dream: a new thriller based on the blockbuster 2002 film and executive-produced by none other than Steven Spielberg. Set in DC in 2065, the series features Dash, a “precog” who can see crimes before they occur. Mondays at 9 pm on Fox

Scandal. Everyone’s

favorite guilty pleasure is back for season five, with every bit as much intrigue, torrid romance, and, yes, scandalous behavior. Spoiler alert for binge watchers: Last season’s cliffhanger left Olivia and Fitz kissing on the balcony of the White House. Thursdays at 9 pm on ABC The Blacklist. The

tables have turned in this show’s third season, as agent Liz Keen (former Capitol File cover star Megan Boone) is the target of an FBI manhunt, with the help of friend-turned-foe-turnedfriend-again Raymond Reddington (James Spader). Thursdays at 9 pm on NBC
