When Bobbi Brown, one of today’s most recognizable names in cosmetics, first moved to New York City in the early 1980s, she didn’t know anyone—and times were very different. “I used to go to an aerobics class, and Madonna was often in the class before she was famous,” recalls Brown.

As a young makeup artist, she says, she was never comfortable with ’80s makeup. “It was a time for me to try to conform.” Anyone familiar with Brown’s work knows that didn’t happen. Instead, a natural—and signature—look was born. It started with a collection of ten lipsticks that
the makeup mogul, along with a chemist, created to complement the natural color of lips. “My philosophy was that you can mix and blend colors to get any color you want,” says Brown. After selling the line for a year out of her home in New Jersey, where she had moved with her husband,
she met a buyer for Bergdorf Goodman at a party and pitched her the lipsticks. The collection debuted at the revered Manhattan retailer in 1991. “It was a lucky meeting,” says Brown, who a quarter century later has fittingly introduced ten new shades inspired by the original.
And though Brown’s relationship with the city may have shifted since her start (“I don’t take the subway anymore,” she says with a laugh), the brand’s motto remains intact. “Makeup is simple: A woman should be confident, she should look like herself.”

Tell us about fusing high fashion and high performance in your line, Mission Statement. “Women are busier than ever. They want the ability to go from exercising straight into their day, whether it’s business meetings, dropping the kids at school, running errands—whatever that is for their lives. I couldn’t find something that served me in all of those facets, so I designed it!” You saw a void in the market. “Indeed. I don’t feel like anyone has hit the mark where highperformance wear has seamlessly met high fashion. When you go out you don’t want to actually look like you’re in a tennis dress. Only when you look at it closer do you realize that the fabrics are actually a technical-performance fabric.” What inspired the fabrics you used? “I wanted to find aesthetically pleasing, world-class, engineered performance materials specifically with a high-fashion look and hand. I also wanted to find fabrics that provided varying levels of warmth or that could keep you cool... materials that protect you from the elements.” What has the process been like from inception to final product? “It’s been an incredible learning curve, but it’s also interesting how it parallels movies in the creation of an idea and taking it all the way to a finished product. “For a young actor like myself, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime role,” actor Dev Patel says of Lion, the film adaptation of Saroo Brierley’s memoir, A Long Way Home, which relates how as a child in India an unintended train trip resulted in Brierley’s 1,000mile separation from his family, eventual adoption by an Australian couple, and, 25 years later, the guilt-driven search for his birth mother by piecing together meager clues and sparse memories of his childhood. Directed by Garth Davis and released by The Weinstein Company, Lion was a sensation at the Toronto International Film Festival, with Patel earning particularly rave reviews. “I’m all the more proud of this because I had to really fight for it,” says the 26-year-old actor, noting that his Slumdog Millionaire cachet worked against him. Patel not only built up his physique, mastered an Australian accent, visited Indian orphanages, and wrote in-character diaries, he also spent time bonding with the real Brierley, “the epitome of a survivor,” he says. The opportunity, Patel adds, “was something that I knew would be incredibly nourishing.” It also landed him on the immediate short list for major awards contention. “Being a young BritishAsian actor, I’m finally given a piece of material that I can really run with,” he admits. “The whole experience made me feel really humbled coming away from it.”

Aristocrat, cancer survivor, and now entrepreneur, Dawn Russell has drawn on her life experiences to create 8Greens, a natural supplement sold on Bergdorf Goodman’s website. We caught up with Russell for a tour of her favorite West Village spots. The day starts at her favorite coffee shop. “The Elk (128 Charles St.) has the best granola,” she says, “and they do these caramelized crème brûlée-style grapefruits. It takes you somewhere. It’s so good.” From toys to groceries, Russell shops locally. “Teich Toys and Books (573 Hudson St.) would be your first child’s toy store. Everything is made of wood and gorgeous to look at,” she says. “At Mrs. Green’s Natural Market (585 Hudson St.), you can get

your whole meal and that other stuff you don’t need but end up getting anyway.” The Village holds plenty of memories for her and her husband, Lord James Russell. “The night before we got married, we took over Sant Ambroeus (259 W. 4th St.) and Extra Virgin (259 W. 4th St.), as well as the Paris Commune and a restaurant that has now become APC. People walked up and down the street and got to know each other. In the past, collecting was the realm of the very few. If, for example, a Monet came onto the market, everyone knew who the likely suspects were who could buy it. Today, the market is global, with buyers from all over the world—China, South America, and Russia—and they are all highly active.

What are your strategies for collecting? As an advisor, I feel that I’m a combination art historian, financial analyst, and psychologist. It’s fun when a client distinguishes their collections from others by their choices. I have a client whose life as a commodities trader is hectic. He collects Ellsworth Kelly and Donald Judd to give him the serenity he needs at home. Which artists hold the greatest investment? Works by A-plus artists tend to be the best
long-term. Prices for less-established, “hot” artists may rocket up faster, but they can also fall just as quickly. The art world is a closed universe. How does one gain entrée? Working with an advisor shortcuts the process. Dealers know the most active advisors and know that they’re serious about building clients’ collections. As far as hot restaurant openings go in New York City, fall tends to bring those with the most amount of muscle. Danny Meyer’s famed Union Square Cafe reopens in November, Keith McNally’s Augustine starts “friends and family” at The Beekman Hotel, and all of this is happening right on the heels of Wolfgang Puck premiering his first New York spot, Cut, in the buzzed-about Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown. But it’s chef Dan Kluger’s hotly anticipated boîte in the heart of Greenwich Village that has the culinary cognoscenti’s tongues salivating. The spot remained nameless for months until Kluger revealed he was naming it
after a street in the Bronx where his father grew up: Loring Place. “It’s a very New York–driven restaurant,” says Kluger. “I’ve only worked in New York, for the best chefs and restaurateurs. This restaurant is a culmination of everything I’ve learned from working front of the house with Danny Meyer to working with Tom Colicchio and JeanGeorges Vongerichten.” Given that this is Kluger’s first solo venture, after helming vegetableforward kitchens as executive chef at ABC Kitchen and ABC Cocina, New Yorkers are in overdrive on Resy and Open Table trying to secure a seat. WE’RE ALL COUCOU! The sip-worthy cocktails at hot spot Le Coucou are as cheeky as the illustrated menu. No. 528, to take one example, is a hit combination of yellow Chartreuse, cognac, cherry ratafia, and lemon. Sommelier Aaron Thorp’s tightly edited lineup is perfectly aligned with Daniel Rose and Stephen Starr’s classic French eatery. Almost immediately, the Roman and Williams– designed space in Soho was the most 'grammable opening in New York. Designed in the aesthetic tradition of the French salon, the bar—a private space framed by handtroweled plaster walls— is breathtaking. The farms and farmers with whom Kluger has established relationships inspire the small and large shareable plates, and the refined mix of sweet, salty, and sour his cooking is known for turns up in dishes such as woodgrilled broccoli with
orange and pistachios and roasted red snapper with butternut squash, mushrooms, and lime. The space itself, designed by architect Craig Shillitto of NY-based Cycle Architecture + Planning, is in line with the philosophy of the food. The idea was to build a setting with “ingredients” as raw, natural, and imbued with integrity as those on the
plate, while creating a clean and modern aesthetic. Walnut, oak, and natural brick are juxtaposed with black steel, concrete, and glass in the main dining room, bar room, and two private dining spaces on the lower level. Menswear designer and friend Todd Snyder—the two met at ABC Kitchen—created the aprons for Loring Place. For Kluger, the apron has
evolved in recent years for male chefs across the city, because more attention is paid to them in the world of open kitchens, and because there is more chef-to-patron interaction than ever before. The Museum of Modern Art’s must-see exhibition this season is Nan Goldin’s operatic work “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency.” The three-part installation— posters and book proofs, photos, and a slideshow— arcs back to the 1980s, when Goldin first started documenting her friends’ lives and her own in snapshotlike photos, and showed them at art spaces like the
OP Screening Room and dives like the Mud Club and Tin Pan Alley, where she worked as a bartender. Confessional pictures reveal life as Goldin’s crowd lived it: in the bars, dark streets, and motel bedrooms and broken-tile bathrooms of Berlin, Boston, and Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Goldin describes the subject matter she so unflinchingly
records as “the density and flavor of life;” Klaus Biesenbach, MoMA’s chief curator at large, calls it “the human condition.” In the gallery, millennials eagerly take selfies of Goldin’s photos, including one of the artist bruised and battered by her boyfriend (“the central image of ‘The Ballad,’” notes Goldin). Lucy Gallun, assistant curator of

While many fashion houses come and go or change direction with each new in-house designer, Escada is approaching the grand age of forty without losing sight of what makes it special in the eyes of its faithful followers, while simultaneously offering “classic cool” to seduce younger fans. “In fashion, reaching 40 years is a great accomplishment,” says Escada’s fashion director, Daniel Wingate, of the label’s upcoming milestone. “It’s an honor that so many women still love the brand and turn to Escada to make them feel beautiful.” With that in mind, Escada has created a bright, vivacious resort collection laced with modern elements, but which, Wingate adds, translates the brand’s heritage for today. Wingate turned to David Hockney’s celebrated pool paintings—those modernist emblems of 1960s California cool—for his initial inspiration. Describing the collection as a “wink to the bygone era of famous swans like Babe Paley and Jackie Kennedy and the glamorous days of Hollywood,” he embraced super-fresh colors with names like Melrose pink and Mimosa yellow, along with shades of blue (a particular obsession in Hockney’s

aquatic series). Key pieces include pencil-striped coats with matching dresses and cigarette pants worn with fortune cookie-shaped tops tied at the waist with karate-style belts. Wingate’s other inspiration, of course, is the “Escadettes”—the designer’s name for his loyal clients— who look to the brand to expand their wardrobes as they prepare to winter in toasty, sun-filled resorts. “They’re adding some wonderfully feminine but simple shapes in vivid, fresh colors, the head-to-toe tonal ones and the white and black grouping, along with the striped pieces that bring in all colors of the collection,” he says. “It’s also time to be more playful with your clothes.” To that end, he encourages his clientele to try a jumpsuit, belt the waist over a coat, and even experiment with a top worn back to front. The collection, which makes stylish dressing practically foolproof, also borrows from the past—specifically, the custom-made mint cowl-neck gown that Kim Basinger wore when she won the Oscar for best supporting actress for L.A. Confidential in 1998. Wingate has adopted the flattering neckline for a Mimosa yellow dress as well as for hip-length, waist-skimming tops with deep backs that can be worn with conservative white slacks or chic ankle-length pencil pants. And peeking out from both pants and dresses are metallic slides in silver, gold, or bronze that Wingate calls “Frank Gehry buildings for the foot.” Although accessories are minimal, Escada has introduced its chic new ML40 handbag—available in eyepopping colors—to commemorate the company’s upcoming 40th birthday and recognize Escada’s founder, Margaretha Ley. While the 2017 resort collection has pieces reminiscent of a more unhurried age, when women seemed to have all the time in the world to get themselves together, it’s still as modern and polished as the woman who wears it today—one who needs to keep it stylish but without overthinking her wardrobe. As part of this year’s milestone, Rizzoli has introduced the coffee-table book Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: A New York City Holiday Tradition, which captures
the history and scope of the spectacle and features a foreword by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and afterword by Macy’s Chairman and CEO Terry J. Lundgren. “The parade’s halo effect becomes a tangible reality for shoppers at their local Macy’s store and macys.com,” says Lundgren. “They expect the parade’s perfectly choreographed execution to translate into a seamless shopping experience.”

THIS YEAR’S MIRACLE ON MADISON AVENUE MARKS THREE DECADES OF FABULOUS PHILANTHROPY ON THE WORLD’S MOST GLAMOROUS SHOPPING AVENUE. BY SUZANNE CHARLƒ
On Saturday, December 3, between 10 AM and 5 PM, over 80 stores and restaurants on Madison Avenue, from 57th to 86th Streets, will open their doors to festive New Yorkers. And, in the spirit of giving, those businesses will donate 20 percent of their sales to The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center—all thanks to Miracle on Madison Avenue. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, “Miracle on Madison Avenue is a true New York tradition,” notes Matthew Bauer, president of Madison Avenue Business Improvement District. Martha Dupee and Helen “Noonie” Marx, who owned Thaxton & Company, a home furnishings boutique, founded the event in 1987 and asked stores to devote 20 percent of their sales on one day to charities serving underprivileged children in New York City. They set up the Madison Avenue Fund for Children and got to work. “At the beginning it was always the first Sunday in December,” recalls Susan Bruder, who volunteered in the early years. Dupee, Marx, and their Madison Avenue Fund for Children were the heart of the event. “They’d go from store to store, convincing the owners to join. They were really gracious, tenacious—and never took ‘no’ for an answer. You never walked away from them before agreeing to

do what they wanted you to do. And you felt good about it! “Things really took off when Ralph Lauren opened his flagship store in the Rhinelander Mansion and he got involved,” she adds. After about a decade of activity, over 160 luxury boutiques and restaurants participated in 1995 and 1996. Thousands of locals strolled the avenue, some, The New York Times reported, with dogs wearing “sweaters with gold buttons in the style of Chanel.” In later years, the Children’s Aid Society, with the support of the Madison Avenue BID, became a partner and sole beneficiary of the event. Miracle on Madison Avenue, which originally stretched between 57th and 72nd Streets, continued to expand, up to 86th Street. Bruder, who went on to plan the event for CAS, said tens of thousands of New Yorkers would stroll, dine, and shop, enjoying special offerings in various tents: spa treatments in one tent, authors charming kids with their stories in another. And of course there were celebrities—stars from the Yankees, Bobby Short, and Tamara Tunie of Law & Order: SVU. 2016 marks the fifth year that the Madison Avenue BID is the lead event sponsor and that The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is the official partner and beneficiary, in support of its pediatric initiatives. Some 80 stores will participate and, as always, donate a fifth of their sales during the day. Many, Bauer notes, are long-term participants, including Bally, Armani,
Fred Leighton, Coach, Lalique, Bonpoint, and Ralph Lauren. Madison Avenue is no longer closed to traffic, but as always, carolers dressed in period looks will stroll the avenue, and chefs from local restaurants will offer signature dishes in the Taste of Madison Avenue tent. Free performances will be highlighted on two stages. The newest pediatric initiative, says Lavinia Branca Snyder, president of The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, is clinical genomic profiling for pediatric cancer patients. “Genomic sequencing is one of the most promising areas in cancer research and treatment today,” she says. “The funding will help researchers and clinicians transform a one-size-fits-all approach to one in which the genetic makeup of the patient and the tumor dictate the best therapeutic strategy. I am so deeply grateful that Miracle on Madison Avenue supports such an important cause.” On a personal level, Snyder is also grateful. For 24 years, she and her family have lived in an apartment where the sitting room windows overlook Madison Avenue. Edgardo Osorio’s Aquazzura (939 Madison Ave., 347-328-0080) is exquisitely appointed by interior designer Ryan Korban—and the footwear is every bit as breathtaking. I’ll be here throughout the season for holiday-party shoes. During winter, a glass of champagne and a bit of caviar at The Mark Restaurant (25 E. 77th St.,212-606-3030) always puts me in a festive mood! Cocktails and culture go hand-inhand. Kappo Masa (976 Madison Ave., 212-906-7141) is my favorite spot for luxe sushi and sake before a visit to the Gagosian Gallery (212-744-2313) upstairs. The exhibition on Kerry James Marshall at The Met Breuer (945 Madison Ave., 212-731-1675) is a must-visit. Fred Leighton (773 Madison Ave., 212-288-1872) is the most spectacular fine jewelry store in NYC. My engagement ring is from there, and my husband and I always return for special-occasion pieces. My Madison Ave. tour ends with a stop at Veronica Beard’s new shop (988 Madison Ave., 646-9304746). I just got the Antares convertible coat, which I love!

I always like to see the new watch collections at Panerai (703 Madison Ave., 212-223-1562). I have three, and they are a real chef’s watch–good looking, strong, precise, and tasteful. The Frick Collection (1 E. 70th St., 212-288-0700) is inspiring in terms of art and design. It’s the ideal place for a break between two services to meditate and relax in the courtyard. We’ve used L’Olivier Floral Atelier (19 E. 76th St., 212-7747676) at Daniel since 1993. It’s across the street from Café Boulud—perfect for picking up a bouquet after a lunch. Majorelle, a new restaurant run by Charles Masson and chef Christian Delouvrier at The Lowell hotel (28 E. 63rd St., 212-838-1400), is named after Yves Saint Laurent’s famed gardens in Marrakesh and has beautiful décor. The owner of Rotisserie Georgette (14 E. 60th St., 212-3908060) was my PR director and a longtime member of the core Daniel team. It’s a pleasure to see the beautiful space she has created, not to mention her wonderful, soulful, and delicious take on bistro classics. Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle (35 E. 76th St., 212-744-1600) is certainly one of the best bars on the Upper East Side—along with Bar Pleiades and Daniel Lounge!

One of the places I love is Bemelmans Bar (35 E. 76th St., 212-744-1600) at the Carlyle. You never know who might get up and play. The lighting is great, the music is fun. It’s kind of Old New York. I love Dennis Basso (825 Madison Ave., 212-794-4500). He’s got this big voice that welcomes you into his store. He has the most amazing dresses and gowns, and, as a woman, we all fantasize about walking in them at some point. At Barneys New York (660 Madison Ave., 212-826-8900), you can shop ’til you drop and go to Freds afterwards for lunch— they have the most amazing salads there. It’s like a twofer. Intermix (1003 Madison Ave., 212-2497858) is great for their wide range of designers under one roof. I head to Sant Ambroeus (1000 Madison Ave., 212-5702211) for a quick cappuccino. The sandwiches at the bar are great, too. You feel like you’re not in New York, it’s so Italian. There are so many times my computer crashed and I headed to the Apple Store (940 Madison Ave., 646-343-2700). The geniuses fix everything in five minutes—it’s incredible!

I always shop for my family on Madison Avenue. At Lalique (609 Madison Ave., 212-355-6550) I found a bracelet to celebrate my daughter’s graduation. Lalique was a favorite of my father’s. He passed when I was 23—the same age Ophelia was when I gave her the bracelet. At CH Carolina Herrera (802 Madison Ave., 212-744-2076) I found a pink wallet embossed with flowers— so much like Ophelia! I knew immediately that it could replace the worn green one she carried everywhere. It’s a tradition in our family to find the right ornament each year, and last year it came from Zitomer (969 Madison Ave., 212-737-5560). We got two matching ones: a fish reflected in a blue circle and two scuba divers, a mother and a daughter. What can I say about Apple (940 Madison Ave., 646-343-2700)? I have a Mac desktop to organize my life, an iPad to edit my photos on the go, and an iPhone 6 with so many photos and messages that I consider it my diary. My workweek “uniform” includes Hermès (691 Madison Ave., 212-7513181) accessories that I wear almost every day (just ask my coworkers!) and my Bally (628 Madison Ave., 212-751-9082) booties that make me smile every time I put them on.

Matt Serra: Do you think that New Yorkers have the wrong impression of what mixed martial arts is—that people think it’s this violent blood sport when in fact it’s not? Chris Weidman: Yeah, I think there was definitely a misconception in New York, just because it was illegal here. You always had to position yourself from the guilty side of an argument. Anytime you have to do that, you feel like it’s not being respected, and it wasn’t. Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson: I grew up in MMA. I don’t think it’s violent at all. You’re starting to see more and more kids getting involved with it. I think that’s one of the reasons why it’s the fastest-growing sport in the world. Jim Norton: Chris, can you talk a little bit about the process of getting MMA legalized in New York—from Governor Pataki banning it in 1997 to Governor Cuomo legalizing it this year? We were the last state in the union for this to be legal. CW: It was a crazy situation. Usually New York is on the forefront of things, but with this we were the last. Basically, you had to lobby all the senators and the governor and try to get this thing legalized over the past 10 years, and we finally got it done. JN: UFC President Dana White talked for a long time about getting MMA to New York. Madison Square Garden was kind of the dream. CW: To be able to fight in New York in front of all the fans and family and friends that weren’t able to travel to Las Vegas, it’s a dream come true. They can just take a train ride right into Penn Station, walk upstairs to Madison Square Garden. It’s the way it should be. They deserve it. MS: How did you get your start in MMA? CW: My background is wrestling. I was lucky enough that when I got into MMA, I went to the Serra BJJ Academy. I felt like it was the only place I could go in New York, and that’s when my career started. ST: I’ve been fighting since I was 15. I went to my first UFC show when I was 12 in Charlotte, North Carolina—UFC 2. I told myself this is what I was going
to do one day. JN: Did you fight a lot before you fought professionally? ST: That’s all it was. I competed just about every weekend in point-sparring tournaments, and karate was my focus. I didn’t play any other sports—all karate. MS: What made you want to switch—to say, “I want to do MMA. I want to fight in the cage”? ST: Former UFC champion Georges St-Pierre brought me in for [Brazilian MMA fighter] Thiago Alves’s camps. I was strictly doing kickboxing at the time, but I was going up there for his camps, so I found myself learning jujitsu, learning wrestling, to be a better sparring partner for Georges. Through him, I was training for MMA. In 2010, I had my first MMA fight. JN: What was your record as a kickboxer? ST: 57 and 0. JN: 57 and 0! That’s incredible that you’d walk away from that. ST: UFC is the fastest-growing sport in the world. Kickboxing was going nowhere. For me, as a martial artist, I wanted to be the best fighter in the world. It was hard, because just before I made that change, I tore every ligament in my left leg. I was out for three years. The doctor said I’d probably never fight again. I had a torn ACL [anterior cruciate ligament], every CL, and they took 40 percent of my meniscus out. I had a good crew behind me, good solid team, and they kept me focused, man. JN: How about you, Chris? Was there any injury you thought might actually stop you? CW: When I was 2 and 0, I fractured my hand pretty bad, and they had to do a surgery where they put my hip bone into my hand and they fused it. It literally was not getting better. For about a year, I didn’t fight at all. I was living in my parents’ basement, I had no money—it was a very stressful time. I had a lot of pressure on me to move on and get a normal job, but I stuck through. I said, you know what? I’m going to just fight injured. I took a fight with Uriah Hall, and I ended up finishing him with a left hook. I still couldn’t really hit with my right hand,

and then after that fight, somehow it just healed. MS: As a former fighter, I know the thrill of victory in the Octagon. It’s the highest high. Is it a big difference from winning in the wrestling, karate, or kickboxing world? ST: Just the feeling of winning is a good feeling, but doing it on the highest platform in combat sports is something different, man. MS: Are you scared when you walk out to fight? ST: Oh, yeah. But that’s a good thing. That’s what keeps you on edge. Of course, you hear it all the time: If you step out there and you don’t feel those nerves, maybe you should hang it up, because then you won’t be aware. You won’t take the right movements or the right reactions that you should be taking. That’s a scary situation. JN: Have you been booed, Chris? You beat a very loved champion in Anderson Silva. CW: Oh man, I got booed. Every single one of my title fights pretty much, because I was going against these legendary Brazilians in the beginning. It started with Anderson Silva. [The first fight] I got booed, and then the second fight I got booed again, because I beat him with that hook. People thought I got lucky. Again, I got booed after I had his leg broke. [Lyoto] Machida and Vitor [Belfort], same thing. I’m excited to have this fight in New York where maybe I won’t get booed! JN: What is your relationship like with the fans? It seems like you’re much more accessible to the fans than in any other sport. CW: All of us have come from a background where we would go win a big tournament, whether it be karate or wrestling or jujitsu, and come back home and be treated the same. No one realized what you just did. You walked around thinking you’re the man, but no one else thought you were. When you get into a sport like MMA and you’re in the UFC, you win a fight and you go back home, everybody is so proud of you and gives you so much respect. When you get that type of respect when you’re not used to it, you want to show respect back. You want to let the fans know how appreciative you are of them. JN: How did the two of you guys meet? CW: I brought [Wonderboy] in to train for my first Anderson Silva fight. He has a very unconventional style with his hands down, does a lot of karate stuff, and kicks out of nowhere. Anderson Silva was known to put his hands down and move differently and come with different things when you’re not expecting it. I’m like, “Holy smokes, this kid is good.” At that time his name wasn’t that big—he might have had two or three fights. ST: Yeah, I had, like, two fights. CW: The way he helped me prepare for these guys, these legends that everybody was scared of… When I got into the cage finally with Anderson Silva, Machida, Vitor, they were literally so slow compared to Wonderboy. He just made everything so easy for me once I was in there. JN: What about the family relationship you guys have?
WHITE KNIGHT MMA, or mixed martials arts (for the four people left in the world who haven’t heard of it), has developed over the years into one of the most popular sports in the United States—and around the globe. Its rise, though, didn’t happen by chance, and the man who can take credit for it is Dana White, the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Mastering the launch of any product requires an instinctive understanding of its potential appeal. “When we got into this business, I was looking at boxing,” recalls White. “I knew boxing was going to be in trouble. I sat down and thought, ‘Imagine if they did this, and imagine if they did that—this could be big.’ I’ve always said this, and it ended up being true. I don’t care what color you are, I don’t care what country you come from, and I don’t care what language you speak, we’re all human beings, and fighting is in our DNA. We get it. We like it. I believed this thing would work everywhere.” Intuition isn’t enough, of course: It takes a certain amount of self-belief to get a project of this magnitude off the ground. “We had a vision and a plan, and we stuck to it no matter what. We went with our gut,” says White. “In the beginning, there were three guys who believed in the vision, and in the end there were a lot more people who believed. Watch what we do in the next five years.”
Chris, your sister is married to Stephen’s brother. You don’t see that often in UFC. CW: I’m very overprotective of my sister. I’m literally way overboard. For years I was probably detrimental to her getting a boyfriend. Then when Tony came out [to a camp] and I saw that there were some sparks flying, I actually opened my heart up, and I’m like, I want my sister to be happy. She’s 26 years old at this point, and I knew Tony was a good dude, comes from a good family. I’m like, you know what, let’s see what happens. I’ll keep my hands off this one. ST: They just hit it off. Next thing you know, a year later, she’s moving down to South Carolina and they got married this past April, which was an awesome wedding. JN: What would you say is your most memorable fight? ST: I think my most memorable would be my one loss in the UFC. I lost to a guy named Matt Brown, and man, we beat the crap out of each other. During that fight, it showed me what I needed to work on, what I needed to improve, but not only that, but being out there and just getting punched in the face and kneed in the body and elbowed in the face. I had cuts, I was bleeding—I just kept going when most people would have stopped. I told myself, this guy is not going to knock me out; he’s not going to submit me. If this guy’s going to win, I’m going to give him hell. If not for that fight, I don’t think I would be where I am today. MS: How do you feel different now? ST: Oh man, just with what I learned during that fight, the weight-cutting process, walking around with a lighter weight, my takedown defense, coming up here working with you, Matt Serra, and Chris Weidman—working on my ground game has helped me tremendously. It gives me all the confidence in the world to go out there and face these tough opponents. I’m getting ready to fight Tyron Woodley November 12—welterweight champion right now. Man, just putting myself through the grind, that’s why I love training with champions. Guys like Matt Serra and Chris, they have no excuses. They could have an injury, but they’re always in the gym. There’s always something that you can do and push yourself. JN: Formwise, you lower your hands a little bit. Is that scary against a guy like Tyron Woodley, who hits like a truck? ST: I’m used to it. I’m used to stepping out there. I’ve been doing it since I was 15. Hands down, I don’t know why. CW: That’s crazy, the murderers’ row you just went through, every one of those guys hits like a truck— Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger, and Rory MacDonald. Dangerous dudes. ST: Muhammad Ali was one of the best at
it—always had his hands down, which helps you distribute your weight a little bit easier to move your head. I use that for myself. I stick my head out wanting you to try and hit it. That way I can counter you. JN: You’re relying on speed. ST: Oh yeah, it’s speed and accuracy, speed and accuracy. JN: How about you, Chris—what’s your most memorable? CW: I have to say my fight when I won the title. Anderson Silva is a guy who was known as the greatest of all time. No one gave me a shot at beating him. People laughed at me, and then to go out there and do it—there’s no better feeling than that. JN: I was there in the crowd that night. I’ve never been more shocked in sports as watching him get knocked out. I wasn’t shocked that you won, but to watch him go down like that… CW: It was insane. I shocked myself. I planned on beating him, but I figured it was going to be more a takedownsubmission-takedown grind. To go out there and knock him out, a guy who used to just put his hands down and let people punch him in the face and he doesn’t go anywhere… To get that knockout was ridiculous. JN: What did it feel like to connect and watch him go down? CW: He was taunting me. I got emotional, which is usually not good, but it worked out for me because I got pissed. I’m not going to stop punching until I crack this dude. That’s what I did. JN: For UFC 205, you’re fighting an extremely strong guy, Yoel Romero. What do you think about this fight? I know you don’t want to give away your game plan, but it seems like his cardio isn’t quite where yours is. CW: My usual game plan is to pressure. I’m usually a little longer, so keep my range, walk him down, and make him work. From the wrestling to the striking, wrestling, back to the striking, get to the ground, nonstop movement. As long as we’re moving and I’m putting pressure on him, it’s a good thing for me. JN: Do you think if you beat Yoel Romero, that puts you in line to go back to the belt? And let’s talk very quickly about Michael Bisping, the current champion. You and he have kind of gone back and forth. CW: Yeah, I think if I win this fight the way I think I should win it, I think it’s a no-brainer that I’d be able to fight for the title. As far as Bisping, I really don’t have any ill will towards the guy, but this is a guy who’s crapped on my career since I got into the sport. I got into the UFC and a couple fights in, I’m fighting for the title against Anderson Silva. I was undefeated, and Bisping has been in the division for a long time and never had fought for the title. Here comes this young kid that surpasses him. I felt like there was a lot of bitterness and jealousy on his part. He would just rip apart every win I had. He couldn’t wait when I finally lost—the guy went even harder. He’s a talker, and he doesn’t bother me too much.

MS: How do you feel you match up with him? CW: I think, to be honest with you, he’d probably be the easiest fight I’ve had in a long time. MS: Easiest fight? The champ? CW: There’s no such thing as an easy fight, like I said, but he would be the one easy fight. MS: Chris Weidman, you’re telling me the champ, Michael Bisping, will be the easiest fight of your career? CW: He would be the easiest fight of my career. Including Reubem Lopes, the guy I fought for my first fight ever. He was 0 and 0, undefeated fighter. MS: Snap, snap. CW: I think he might be even easier than that. JN: Do you think the fighters have gotten better and better? It seems like a lot of belts have changed hands, and I attribute that to the fact that people are starting at 15 now. There are so many great fighters, it’s hard to go on an eight-fight win streak in the UFC. ST: Yeah, it’s difficult. If you’re fighting in the UFC, I don’t care if you’re in the very beginning or you’re champion, every one of those guys is dangerous. JN: UFC has done so well. What do you think this sport did right that boxing has done wrong? CW: They’re marketing every fighter from the ground up. They’re paying the fighters from the first fight on the card to all the way to the main event. The UFC has TV deals where they have to have a certain amount of fights per year. There’s so many more fighters that they have to push and get people excited about. I think that’s a difference. Boxing just sticks to their pay-per-view, they have their one, two, three, four, five guys that are popular, and other than that, I don’t know any other boxers. That’s the way they went with it. JN: There’s literally so many fights that I care about watching. The UFC seems to give you the fight that you want to see as opposed to making you wait eight years like they did for Pacquiao/ Mayweather.... How do you feel towards the person you just fought after the fight is over? ST: It’s funny how much more respect you have after you finish beating each other up. After you go out there and you lay it on the line, I’m all smiles, and I’m always showing respect to my opponents, even if they don’t want it. CW: The same thing with me. I’ve had some heated stare downs and stuff at weigh-ins, and some bad blood, but at the end of the day, when that fight’s over, there’s a sense of relief and we kind of bond. We just went through something. You didn’t know what was going to happen, both of us were obviously nervous. The result is done… and you just respect each other. In the crowded luxury condo market, a number of people are looking past all the sleek new constructions to buildings that have a whiff of New York City heritage about them. We asked Douglas Elliman’s Arran Patel (917-975-8701), who proclaims a soft spot for structures from “an era when grandeur was more of a priority over cost,” to guide us through New York’s preservation universe. “Ralph Walker was the ‘starchitect’ before there were starchitects,” says Patel. In the Roaring Twenties, Walker made his reputation with the Barclay-Vesey Building, the first Art Deco

skyscraper, which was designated a landmark in 1999. Magnum Real Estate Group and CIM bought the top 22 floors from Verizon to convert into 158 luxury lofts known as One Hundred Barclay (100 Barclay St., 212-2670111; 100barclay.com). It’s easy to see the appeal: The lobby alone, with its vaulted ceiling decorated with communication-themed murals, is a dazzler. Near City Hall Park, the Temple Court Building and Annex boasts a magnificent nine-story atrium with cast iron railings and pyramidal skylight. Rechristened The

Ten years ago, Jack Ryde, the late fourth-generation owner of Swedish bed manufacturer Hästens, set out to create the greatest bed in the world. That sweet dream came true with the company’s blue-checked masterpiece: Vividus. “When we launched Vividus, we never intended for it to be a bed that stops evolving,” says Jan Ryde, Jack’s son and Hästens’ current owner and executive chairman. This fall, the company re-launches its flagship bed, whose construction requires 320 hours of work from four certified craftsmen focused on every detail, from the northern Swedish redwood frame to the hand-sewn layers of
horsehair, cotton, and wool in the customized bodycontouring mattress. The piece is quite literally fit for a king—Hästens was appointed Purveyor to H.M. the King of Sweden in 1952 and has served as official supplier to the Swedish Royal Court ever since—and carries a stately $140,000 price tag. Manhattan Valley is a secret enclave of the Upper West Side. Mention it by name and even seasoned New Yorkers might struggle to find it on a map. Yet this historic neighborhood just south of Morningside Heights rimming Central Park’s northwestern reaches has been re-energized by a swathe of new residents. One newcomer is Sean Rawlinson, whose casual Italian spot, Macchina (2758 Broadway; 212-2039954; macchina.nyc), leans heavily on a custom-built wood-fire oven and offers inventive flourishes like a dirty martini swirled with toasted olive juice. Rawlinson is an alum of nearby Columbia—“I went

there more years ago than I want to mention,” he says—but the buzzy neighborhood prompted his return. “We see the same people four times a week, which is what I wanted,” he explains, describing the raw industrial feel of his 60-seat place as “stylistically more downtown.” The lure, he explains, is the area’s housing stock, which consists largely of roomy two- and three-bedroom homes, which are ideal for young families keen to remain in the city. Similar to nearby Harlem, some of the area’s apartments are carved out from brownstones and townhouses that date back to the earliest maps of the

Other incomers here have opted for Manhattan Valley’s new developments, all expressly configured for that same clientele: There’s family-friendly, luxury living at One Morningside Park (321 W. 110th St., 212-8663210; onemorningsidepark. com) or Circa Central Park (285 W. 110th St., 212-2800285; circacentralpark.com), which hugs the roundabout at 110th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard. The latter, a 38-unit new build, features standard high-end amenities, like a roof terrace and gym. Further south, the Columbus Square complex added more than half a million square feet of retail space, including a muchneeded Whole Foods. To longtime residents like Anthony Kurutz, Manhattan Valley’s rebirth is welcome largely because the area’s vibe has been preserved. “Certainly there have been some new buildings, some nicer restaurants, but the fabric of the neighborhood is intact, and that’s the charm
of it to me,” he says. Now a full-time coffee roaster, Kurutz opened a café here two years ago: Plowshares (2730 Broadway; 212-2220280; plowsharescoffee.com), with its Chemex pour-over coffeemakers and Nitro cold brew, is a java-nerd mecca and de facto clubhouse. Another local, 34-year-old Richie Schatz, spent his teenage years living nearby. He and his father, Alan, moved their family business, Schatzie the Butcher (2665 Broadway; 212-4101555; schatziethebutcher. com), here 18 months ago. “In other neighborhoods, you see a block of banks, but here they want small businesses to succeed, and people are more laid-back,” Richie explains. They’ve expanded with an on-site burger joint, where you can pick a slab of meat and have it ground to order and served in less than 10 minutes. A contemporary take on a classic, it’s the perfect metaphor, and meal, for Manhattan Valley.

A recent survey by the American Society for Dermatological Surgery revealed that nearly 67 percent of us are as bothered by double chins as we are by lines and wrinkles around the eyes. But while there are several options for smoothing out the crinkles, a quick fix for a shimmying chin has always proved elusive—until now. Beauty-minded pharma company Kythera Biopharmaceuticals has debuted Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for that under-the-chin wobble—or, in medical terms, submental fat. Leah Landon has created the hottest—and healthiest—festival on the music scene. by lauren epstein After a successful stint in the music industry helping to launch Lady Gaga to superstardom and managing hip-hop artists like Eve and Fat Joe, Leah Landon was at a crossroads. “I was searching for my own inner peace and sense of well-being,” she says. “I felt very imbalanced in that industry.” What came next was a string of wellnessbased endeavors (including becoming a yoga, spin, and Pilates instructor, health coach, and licensed clinician) that culminated in a part-time job making smoothies behind the counter at Juice Press. “I took the job just to get in,” Landon explains. “My job as a manager was to spot talent. I knew something big was happening in that market.”
Now the vice president of brand experience at Juice Press, Landon has merged her passions to create the Music & Fitness Festival: Sweat. She kicked off the concept in summer 2015 with Southampton Sweat, where participants got to work out with trainers from buzzy New York fitness studios to beats provided by Republic Records, one of three festival partners (the other two are activewear brand Bandier and, of course, Juice Press). Santa Monica Sweat and South Beach Sweat are both due in 2017. “I hope to expand to all cities and really bring the concept to a national level,” Landon says. “We only support positive things in people’s lives: wellness, fitness, music, energy, connection. It’s a beautiful thing.”
