FINDING THE ONE LORD & TAYLOR IS HERE TO RESCUE YOU FROM SARTORIAL HEADACHES AND HEARTBREAK WITH ONE MAJOR UPGRADE: THE LARGEST DRESS FLOOR IN NEW YORK. BY LISA FERRANDINO
For many women, finding that perfect dress is like winning the lottery. The fit is important—how it hugs in all the right places and complements at the right angles—but there are ineffable qualities at play, too, like the way it makes a woman feel (empowered, sexy, romantic, or all of the above). Lord & Taylor has been helping women find the

dress of their dreams since 1826 (it was, after all, the first department store), and now it’s introducing The Dress Address at Lord & Taylor—a 30,000-squarefoot space that is the city’s largest dress floor. And it’s right in the heart of our hometown—the place where dreams come true. “We want women to know they can come to us
for inspirational eveningwear, casual dresses, and everything in between,” says Liz Rodbell, president of Lord & Taylor. With more than 2,500 dresses (including stunning options from Sachin & Babi and Calvin Klein), a café, concierge service, and lifestyle vignettes (think The Little Black Dress, Prom, and Contemporary Dressing),
it’s easier than ever to find the dress. There’s also The Gallery, a dedicated space with personal shopping suites and a curated selection of top designers like Reem Acra, Marchesa, and Bibhu Mohapatra. It looks like the odds of winning the lottery just got a whole lot better. 424 Fifth Ave., 212-391-3344; lordandtaylor.com

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
With summer on the horizon and warmer days finally here, late spring is a time to get out and have some fun! For some, that means taking in the Costume Institute’s annual exhibition (this year’s show about Rei Kawakubo looks positively spellbinding); for others, it means taking in a game. And this season, in true New York fashion, the playing field is generating some real buzz. Cover star Noah Syndergaard—aka Thor—has given such a spectacular burst of energy to the Mets, and it’s not just because his six-foot-six frame and blond locks bring Chris Hemsworth’s Marvel superhero to mind. As one very important part of the Mets’ star pitching lineup, Syndergaard is the picture of calm, cool, and collected as he tells us all about his plans for National League domination. (Also, look out for his Game of Thrones cameo!) This issue is filled with endless ways to truly enjoy our city this season. New boutiques are popping up everywhere from the

Upper East Side (Edie Parker) to Soho (Veronica Beard) to Flatiron (Want Apothecary). We explore a resurgence of activity in MePa, and bring you inside some of the best fitness studios in the city, including Rumble (because boxing is totally #trending). And when you need a break from the flurry of springtime fun in the city, it’s time to dash off to the Hamptons. We close out the issue with a big, glorious portfolio of the hottest real estate on the East End and the brokers to know. Enjoy spring in the city—and get ready for summer in the Hamptons!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
Noah Syndergaard is a force to be reckoned with! The Mets’ 24-year-old starting pitcher has been creating a lot of excitement for the upcoming season during spring training. We are so thrilled to have his exclusive cover story for this issue. There’s so much to see and do this spring. It’s been six years since Chanel launched a new handbag collection, and the Gabrielle bag is certainly worth the wait! And speaking of must-see fashion, Lord & Taylor has unveiled the largest dress floor in the city with 30,000 square feet of designer dresses— sounds like heaven on earth! The much anticipated Fusco, Scott Conant’s new restaurant in the Flatiron District, is opening. The Met Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, opening on May 4, celebrates Rei Kawakubo and her label Comme des Garçons, and the Met Ball—always the most important fashion event of the season—helps kick off the exhibition on May 1. There’s more excitement on the horizon in 2017, with Restoration Hardware opening its new RH 24 GOTHAM-MAGAZINE.COM
Gallery in the Meatpacking District—it’s going to be the brand’s largest-ever retail space. And don’t miss our Hamptons real estate preview‚—it’s a must-read! Stay up-to-date with #TheGothamEdit, a weekly feature on our Instagram, where we’ll be sharing the best in food, fitness, wellness, design, and more! SOIRÉES WITH SIZZLE NEW YORKERS WERE READY TO WELCOME SPRING AT SOME OF THE HOTTEST EVENTS OF THE SEASON. There were plenty of reasons to get out and play as New Yorkers bid farewell to a mild winter that went out with a bang. Gotham fêted the cover star of its Spring issue, Joe Jonas, with an intimate dinner at The VNYL, one of the buzziest new restaurant lounges in the city. TriStar Pictures and the Cinema Society held a party for the premiere of T2 Trainspotting, and the New York Junior League raised over half-a-million dollars for women, children, and families throughout the city.

The hashtagging frenzy began well before the exhibition “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” even opened. Search #MetKawakubo and be prepared for a deluge of breathtaking images, most of them photographed in Paris at the preview of the show. Set to open in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute on May 4, the exhibition celebrates the career of avant-garde Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo. The show explores—or rather, explodes—eight sets of binary categories that Kawakubo has addressed in her work: Fashion/Anti-Fashion, Design/ Not Design, Model/Multiple, Then/Now, High/Low, Self/ Other, Object/Subject, and Clothes/Not Clothes. Curator Andrew Bolton worked with Kawakubo to choose approximately 150 pieces ranging from the 1980s to the present. With a cult following of collectors and thousands of fans ready to be wowed, Comme des Garçons is again the hottest ticket of the season. Opens May 4 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Ave., 212-5357710; metmuseum.org

WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AFTER HEADING A STRING OF TRENDY AND TOP-RATED ITALIAN SPOTS, SCOTT CONANT WANTS TO FEED PEOPLE JUST LIKE HIS GRANDMOTHER USED TO.
As Scott Conant debuts Fusco, his intimate Italian outpost in the Flatiron District’s recently vacated Veritas space, he faces a challenge familiar to chefs of his distinction: Create an experience that’s consistent with his brand (L’Impero, Scarpetta, Impero Caffè) but unlike any that has

come before it. For the James Beard Award winner—who has opened Mora Italian, in Phoenix, and The Ponte, in LA, in the last few months— the solution comes with a healthy portion of oldworld hospitality. The name: “I named it after my grandmother.
Whenever anyone would show up to her house, there was something there— whether it was coffee or cake or a full meal. It was this idea of old-world hospitality that resonates with everyone. That’s my biggest inspiration from her.” The dish: “We are working on a lobster and
mascarpone gnudi. It has all the principles and values of what a true gnudi is, plus some lobster in every bite so there’s that textural experience.” The vibe: “It’s going to be a serious restaurant, but the goal is to not take ourselves very seriously. I don’t want to be stuffy or pretentious, but I want it to
be an expression of high end.” Satisfaction: “We’ll still have The Stones playing. We’ll still have good music that we can all identify with. And it’s a place where I can use a lot of the luxury ingredients that I love and people love to eat.” 43 E. 20th St., 212-777-5314; fusconewyork.com

LA VIE EN ROSÉ CELEBRATING THE 10TH VINTAGE OF ITS BUZZY FLAGSHIP ROSÉ, CHÂTEAU D’ESCLANS BRINGS A TASTE OF ST-TROPEZ TO THE STATES.
Great wine hinges on four elements, says rosé producer Sacha Lichine, the bon vivant owner of St-Tropez winery Château d’Esclans: the soil (that ineffable quality called terroir), the grapes, the climate, and, finally, the winemaker, whose craft harmonizes all the other elements. The problem, he adds, is that rosé is the most difficult wine to make well. Luckily for Château d’Esclans, Lichine is perhaps the most prominent producer in the world. Ten years ago, winemakers, restaurants, and distributors could barely give rosé away. But exports of Provençal rosé to the US increased by more than 900 percent between 2006 and 2015, with a 58 percent increase between 2014 and 2015 alone. Now in its 10th vintage, Château d’Esclans’s flagship rosé, Whispering Angel, has come to epitomize the classic dry Provençal style. Much of the complexity is owed to bâtonnage, whereby fine lees, or dead yeast cells, are stirred back into the wine, while new technologies, including advanced refrigeration systems and pneumatic presses, keep the processing precise, all crucial to the production of “a product that is very easy to make average,” Lichine says. “The perception of rosé in America has changed dramatically,” says Aldo Sohm, chef sommelier at New York’s Le Bernardin, whose acclaimed wine program is central to its three Michelin stars. “There’s a real following of rosé now, which didn’t exist a few years ago.” Perhaps Château d’Esclans’s greatest achievement, says Lichine, has been creating wines whose experiences are evocative of St-Tropez itself—clean, crisp, sophisticated, and fun. “What we’ve done,” he says, “is create a taste.”

With New York in full bloom, pastel colors are influencing everything from fashion to interior design. Flirty floral dresses at Dolce & Gabbana and sherbet-colored frocks at Pucci and Michael Kors ruled the runways, and interior designers are following suit with blush, pastel blue, and buttercream yellow furniture and objets. As the oh-so-fashionable Aerin Lauder, founder and creative director of Aerin, notes, “Pastels are pretty and an easy way to add a touch of color to a room.” It’s true that pastels add a soothing aspect to interior

To me, pastels elicit gourmandise and are simply chic. The décor is inspired by the magic of Paris.”

Jason Mendenhall and Robert Ceraso have designed their hipsterish spot The Wild Son (53 Little W. 12th St., 212727-7900; thewildson nyc.com) to be a healthyeating, all-day café (think cauliflower breakfast sandwiches, gluten-free pancakes, and even vegan doughnuts). There’s a range of house-made juices and sodas, while any drink—even the iced coconut latte on tap—can be carbonated to order. Entrepreneur Jon Bakhshi has revived the hip Japanese spot Megu (355 W. 16th St., 212-885-9400; megu worldwide.com) and relocated it to the 5,000-square-foot basement of the Dream Hotel. The playful food reflects the décor—even the Wagyu beef is waggishly branded with the restaurant’s logo, a canny branding trick for the Instagram era. The cocktails by industry legend Charlotte Voisey are not to be missed. which is set to be RH’s largest-ever retail space. (Rumor has it that the luxury home brand is also breaking into the NYC hospitality scene with a new 12-room boutique hotel concept in the area.) The imminent arrival of Hermès (46-48 Gansevoort St.; hermes.com) is yet another boost to the neighborhood’s luxe credentials; its VIP roof terrace is likely to become one of the hottest velvet-rope situations in town.

With her debut single, “Issues,” singer-songwriter Julia Michaels moves from behind the scenes to behind the mic.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEREDITH TRUAX
At first listen, Julia Michaels’s debut single, “Issues,” reveals a singer-songwriter that has a story to tell. Only 23 years old, Michaels has already co-penned smashes for Justin Bieber (“Sorry”), Selena Gomez (“Hands to Myself”), and Nick Jonas (“Close”), and “Issues” draws on the same hit-making formula that helped propel those acts onto the Billboard charts: A stripped-down track puts the focus on a simple, catchy melody and more-honest-than-usual lyrics. “That’s the case for a lot of the songs I’ll have coming out,” says Michaels. “I’ve written these lyrics, and I want the music to be an added texture to tell a story.” While Michaels has helped other musicians express themselves in radio-ready tracks, she’s added a little of herself to each one. “I always put myself into everything I do,” says Michaels. “A lot of the things you’ve heard that I’ve worked on are a lot of me as well as the other artists.” Michaels’s first foray into the spotlight has already landed her in the iTunes Top 20, but this time she’s the one putting herself out there. “I had written ‘Issues’ about a fight with my boyfriend,” she says. “At the end of it, we were like, ‘This is something so petty, we love each other, and that’s what matters.’ It felt weird to me that someone else would sing such a personal story. I knew it was mine.” @imjmichaels

IT TAKES TWO THE HUSBAND-AND-WIFE DUO BEHIND SCHWUNG HOME ARE DESIGNING FOR THEMSELVES—AND THE FUTURE. BY OUSSAMA ZAHR
Looking at Dominique Sente and Rudi Nijssen’s first collection for Restoration Hardware—a dazzling set of light fixtures made of handblown glass globes, lustrous brass, and streamlined retro forms—you could almost guess that her background is goldsmithing and his is antiques. And you’d be right. You might also guess, based on how well the pieces fit into RH’s sumptuous aesthetic, that the brand was heavily involved in their creation. And there you’d be wrong. “One of the most amazing parts of our collaboration is that RH gives us carte blanche,” says Nijssen. “There are no limitations.” RH has been seeking out—and promoting—independent artisans at a time when consumers have become more interested in craftsmanship. Nijssen and Sente are married and work out of their firm, Schwung Home, in Poland, where a six-month creative process takes them from mood boards and sketches to the final prototype. RH isn’t even involved until they present the finished design. “Our only desire,” says Sente, “has been to create pieces that will escape trends, pieces with an architectural and poetic vibe. Part of the source of our inspiration for this collection was the décor of some movie sets—mostly from the ’60s and ’70s.” While Sente has helped Nijssen with previous RH collections that have borne his name, this is the first time they share equal billing. Says the couple, “Two can do better than one—like our icons, Charles and Ray Eames!” 935 Broadway, 212-260-9479; rhmodern.com

Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard share not only the same first and last name (they are sisters-in-law who married brothers) but also a singular vision: to meet the needs of women with demands… not just interests. “We think about a girl’s lifestyle,” says Miele Beard. “I design based on the things we need in our life to stay sexy, stay young, and make the day go easier.” To serve this idea to the style set seeking all things functional and cool, the duo opened a second location in Soho (the first is on Madison Avenue), offering pieces that fit seamlessly with the downtown crowd. COCO’S GOT A BRAND NEW BAG THE SIMPLY NAMED GABRIELLE IS CHANEL’S FIRST NEW HANDBAG LINE IN SIX YEARS.
THE GABRIELLE IS A DESIGN MARVEL, MERGING THE SLOUCH OF A HOBO-STYLE HANDBAG WITH A STRUCTURAL BOTTOM.
Freedom, comfort, functionality— these were the three requirements at the top of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s list when she created a handbag that merged practicality with style in 1955. Her idea of dressing the modern woman still rings true today, and it’s nowhere more apparent than in the new bag that bears her name. Chanel’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, introduced the Gabrielle bag during the brand’s Spring 2017 runway show. It’s a design marvel, merging the slouch of a hobo-style handbag with a structural bottom, resulting in a contrasting silhouette that feels fresh and excitingly new. In order to achieve this posh juxtaposition, the handbag is fitted on a rigid thermoformed base, and the body of the bag is crafted from light and supple quilted leather. Of course, Chanel also has perfect taste in its muses, with Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne, Caroline de Maigret, and Pharrell Williams all helping to get the word out in an Instagram campaign. Available in a range of styles (quilted backpacks, chic shoulder bags, sturdy totes, and youthful bucket bags) as well as a multitude of colorways, the Gabrielle offers endless style possibilities. We can’t help but think Coco herself would be pleased. 15 E. 57th St., 212355-5050; chanel.com

Tower of power: Tall, handsome, and vaguely reminiscent of a Norse god, Noah Syndergaard quickly earned the nickname Thor after Marvel kicked off the film franchise with Chris Hemsworth in 2011. The Twitterverse loved the moniker, and there was no turning back. “I don’t think you can resist a nickname like that,” says Syndergaard.

CRUSHING IT The Mets’ superhero starter, Noah Syndergaard, has a 100 mph fastball, unflappable focus, and a cameo in season seven of Game of Thrones. Meet the guy who is giving major-league batters plenty to worry about in 2017.

By MICHAEL VENTRE
In Norse mythology, Thor is something of a god among gods. Dude carries a hammer, and he doesn’t do it to pick up extra work as a handyman. It always seems to be thundering and lightning around him. He’s extra tall, extra strong, and handsome. He has flowing blond hair, so he isn’t confused with lesser-coiffed idols. And he is feared. Whenever he’s introduced, the epithet “The Mighty” precedes his name. In modern-day storytelling, the Thor legend lives on. Only this time, when he drops the hammer on his opponents, it takes the form of a fastball, slider, and changeup. Check the boxes next to tall, strong, handsome, blond, but nix the stormy weather: He does his best work on hot summer days. This Thor is Noah Syndergaard, ace of the New York Mets’ pitching staff. He got the Thor nickname around 2012 and it has not only stuck, it has spread far and wide throughout the land. It’s popular enough that the Mets will give out a Syndergaard Thor bobblehead doll this season, in association with Marvel Comics. On Saturday, July 22, the first 15,000 fans attending the Mets-Oakland A’s game at Citi Field will get a little Thor of their own. “It’s a really cool thing,” Syndergaard says. “It’s the first time Marvel and MLB partnered up to do something like that. I’m really excited. The bobblehead looks awesome. They really got the hair down. I’m really happy about that. I think the fans will enjoy it, as well.” Like Thor, the Mets in general are feared. A starting rotation of Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, and Steven Matz, with a quality fifth starter available among candidates Robert Gsellman, Zack Wheeler, and Seth Lugo, makes the Mets powerful contenders to the Washington Nationals for supremacy in the National League East. And Syndergaard—designated as the Mets’ 2017 Opening Day starter—figures to be even sharper than he was in 2016, when the 6-foot-6 right-hander finished with a 14-9 record and 2.60 ERA, after having tinkered with his delivery in the offseason, and after adding a changeup to go with his wicked 100 mph fastball and devastating slider. “I made some mechanical adjustments in between my side work, and things are just really starting to click for me right now,” he says. With the flaxen locks and rugged good looks, the Thor nickname was a natural fit. The native of Mansfield, Texas, who turns 25 on August 29, first received it while still a relatively short-haired minor leaguer with the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization in 2012. The legend grew more intense after he was traded to the Mets on December 17, 2012, and he let his
blond flag unfurl even further. “Someone on Twitter first mentioned it because Thor is set in the fictional land of Asgard, and my last name ends in ‘gaard,’” he explains of the Marvel Comics realm where Thor operates. “That person just put it together, and it took off. I don’t think you can resist a nickname like that.” When you’re Noah Syndergaard, other doors tend to open. Case in point: His agent at CAA happened to mention to the producers of Game of Thrones that Syndergaard is a huge fan and names some of his gloves after GOT characters. (He has a Tyrion and a Jon Snow.) And, as any Mets fan knows, the warmup song that plays over the stadium PA system while he steps to the mound is the Game of Thrones theme. “They thought it was cool, so they invited me to make a guest appearance on an upcoming episode,” Syndergaard says. “It’s not a speaking part. I’m a Lannister general.” Amid the quasi-medieval rabble of the hit HBO series, the grimy peasants, the violent megalomaniacs, the enchanting dreamers, a dragon or three, the alchemists and sorceresses, and many unfortunate animals, there is usually a blond guy or two hovering around the perimeter, looking stoic—that’s a Lannister. The show is shot in multiple locations. This gig took Syndergaard to Spain. “The baseball following there is slim and none,” he says. “It was a real privilege for me to go over there and be a part of that.” But none of these celebrity perquisites would be possible if the man didn’t have a knack for slaying foes in much the same way Jaime Lannister does: with one badass arm. He enters his third Major League season in 2017. He went 9-7 with a 3.24 ERA in 2015. That year the Mets beat both the Dodgers and Cubs in the postseason before losing in the World Series to the Kansas City Royals, 4-1; it was the Mets’ first appearance in the Fall Classic since they lost to the Yankees in 2000. The 2015 run was when the baseball world really got a serious look at the future of the Mets and their young pitching staff, which included a locked-in Syndergaard, who was 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA and 26 strikeouts in those playoffs. Last season, in which the Mets were stymied by injuries, the team bowed out of the postseason by losing in a National League Wild Card game. Syndergaard got the starting nod in that contest and pitched brilliantly through five and two-thirds innings before eventually falling short against the Giants and their ace Madison Bumgarner, 3-0.

Syndergaard is a commanding presence on the field at spring training. opposite: Pitching a home game.
With Syndergaard at the top of the Mets’ rotation, though, the prospects for 2017 look plenty bright. “We’re really focused on being healthier and stronger this year,” he says. “You can see it already in our pitching staff and in our position players. All five of us [starting pitchers] are healthy. It’s fun to be part of this rotation and to be a part of this team. We’re really a tight-knit brotherhood. We’re always pushing one another, helping one another, and ultimately becoming better as a pitching staff. “All five of us have our lockers right next to each other,” Syndergaard adds. “We’re constantly joking around, having fun, rough-housing. We all grew mustaches together, just for the hell of it.” When he’s not playing hardball, Syndergaard likes to enjoy New York City. Mansfield, Texas, is a town of about 63,000 or so in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but he says he did not have much trouble adjusting to the Big Apple. “I remember seeing all the bright lights and the skyscrapers when I first came here for the Futures Game,” he says of the annual MLB exhibition event for young players. “I was mesmerized by them. Now being here is 100 percent a blessing. I love pitching in this city. I love pitching in Citi Field, in front of the best fans in baseball.” He has an apartment in Manhattan, and on off days he’ll ride his bicycle through Central Park, take in a comedy club, and generally enjoy all that the city has to offer. He’s operating a Noah Syndergaard Baseball ProCamp for kids on August 7 in Union, New Jersey. During
the offseason, he likes to go home to the Dallas area, and he and his dad, Brad, go off shooting. “I also love golf, even though I’m not very good at it,” Syndergaard explains. “I’m still picking it up.” You can also find him twisted up in yoga and Pilates positions during the winter. He is also involved in a cause. His mother, Heidi, suffers from an autoimmune disease known as Sjögren’s syndrome, which causes dry eyes and mouth. Since her diagnosis, in 2012, Syndergaard has helped raise money to fight the disease, including the auctioning off of some of his gloves. “She’s a fighter, and she’s been doing well for the last three years or so,” he says. Syndergaard has a relaxed, approachable social media presence, and his 500,000 Twitter followers like to remind him of his resemblances, including one to Thor’s movie star avatar, Chris Hemsworth. A recent Syndergaard tweet showed an illustration of the Thor bobblehead with Noah’s comment: “I better not give up a run all year with this bad boy in the works.” And yet another with the announcement that the seventh season of Game of Thrones premieres July 16: “Trying to hold my %#@& together right now. (Single tear … lips quivering).” In February, he even tweeted good-bye to Adam Rubin, a longtime Mets beat reporter who was leaving the business: “In all seriousness, best of luck to you Adam!” In the cold world of professional sports, that happens about as often as a dragon sighting. But that’s all part of being Noah Syndergaard; even in his own private version of Asgard, this Thor is in command.

Take note! Spring’s hottest runway trends blend perfectly with the season’s most intoxicating eaux. BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF CRAWFORD
Gone are the days of committing yourself to a single signature scent. Like your closet—filled with wardrobe basics, but transformed each season with on-trend pieces that ensure your personal style evolves with the times and isn’t stuck in the past—your fragrances should be a means of self-expression. Each one reflects a day’s particular mood. “Fragrance and fashion are historically linked,” says legendary perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. “I do believe that one should have a fragrance wardrobe, a mix of ageless classics and fashionable trends.” Kelly St. John, VP of beauty at Neiman Marcus, agrees: “A fragrance wardrobe is expected and encouraged, allowing our customers to select something that fits the day’s inspiration.” It’s only fitting, then, that the season’s four strongest fashion looks—lively, retro beachwear; sultry, romantic florals; bold, sleek power dressing; and chic athleisure with a vintage twist—pair so seamlessly with today’s boldest scents.
FUN IN THE SUN THIS SEASON’S RETRO, BEACH-INSPIRED APPAREL CALLS FOR LOTS OF ZEST. Sunny beaches and succulent fruits came to mind when models wafted down the Spring 2017 runways in retro swim caps and lemon-printed frocks for Miu Miu and Altuzarra. And the latest fragrances are conjuring up the same optimistic outlook: Ralph Lauren’s new Summer Blossom, says master perfumer Harry Fremont, “provokes a moment of luminous happiness” with its notes of sparkling mandarin and guava, while Marc Jacobs’s Daisy Dream Kiss Edition is bursting with grapefruit and blackberry. Light is a focus of both Louis Vuitton’s Mille Feux, which blends raspberry and leather, and Sole di Positano, a sun-drenched citrus juice from Tom Ford. And Michael Kors’s Turquoise will transport you to the sea, thanks to a fleur de sel accord harvested from the cerulean waters off the French coast. It is no coincidence that roses are cropping up left and right in fragrance. “Pink was a really big trend in ready-towear,” says Roopal Patel, fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue, “so it’s interesting to see that rose as a fragrance was top of mind for a lot of [perfume] labels.” In honor of her parents’ love story, Tory Burch pairs rose with warm patchouli in Love Relentlessly, and Armani’s Sì Rose blends the bloom with sensual base notes like amber, reminiscent of the sultry sheaths seen on Dolce & Gabbana’s spring runway. For an edgier take on the flower, Dior’s Poison boasts bitter orange, and Ex Nihilo’s Devil Tender starts spicy with pink pepper berries. From Boss and Salvatore Ferragamo to Tory Burch, power dressing via crisp and sleek suiting was all the rage on spring catwalks. Reinforcing the look of soft fabrications with strong silhouettes are fierce scents that finely balance both sides of the spectrum, such as the opulent, white florals and powerful sandalwood of Gucci Bamboo Limited Edition. Likewise, Good Girl from Carolina Herrera enjoys the irony of a bright jasmine and deep cocoa combo. Lalique’s Fleur Universelle 1900 is all-around intense with a fiery mix of cinnamon and cardamom, and Jo Malone London’s Bloomsbury Set honors Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster, and their fellow English intellectuals with distinctive scents like Tobacco & Mandarin. Viktor & Rolf also pairs vastly different notes with iris and ink in Dirty Trick—a combination, says perfumer Marie Salamagne, that creates “a distinctive and extraordinary depth.”
GAME, SET, EAU! ATHLEISURE HAS FOUND ITS MATCH IN FRESH, CITRUSY SCENTS. When sporting designs from Max Mara or Lacoste’s Spring 2017 vintage and tennis-inspired collections, up your game with clean fragrances that boast notes of energizing citrus. Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian blended lime and cool mint oils with mimosa blossoms to create Aqua Celestia for his eponymous collection. Inspired by the blues of the sky and sea, the scent “explores a new territory of freshness,” says Kurkdjian. Hermès’s Eau des Merveilles Bleue touches on the same theme but mixes sea spray with woody notes, and Elizabeth Arden’s White Tea blends a sea breeze accord with white tea extract. It’s all about Italian bergamot with Guerlain’s vibrant Bergamote Calabria, while perfumer Daniela Andrier also used citruses from Italy when creating Prada’s Candy L’eau, but added a tender floral accord with sweet vanilla for a fragrance that inspires wearers, she says, “to seek out life’s endless pleasures.”

Stepping into The VNYL, or Vintage New York Lifestyle, is like taking a step back in time. The ’70s-inspired clubstaurant, featuring high ceilings and huge homages to rockers and actors on the walls, has a laid-back and groovy vibe (think wood paneling, gold railings, Midcentury Modern furniture, and retro lighting) without oversaturating the experience with kitsch. On the main floor, the restaurant serves up shareable bites, such as bacon quinoa sushi, and perfectly light drinks, like the Diddy Levine, a vodka cocktail with cucumber purée and mint. Take a drink to the upstairs lounge overlooking the dining area, or steal into one of several alcoves for a more intimate moment. 100 Third Ave., 917-675-7725; thevnyl.com

SQUARES
This sexy French boîte may be minuscule, but the closely packed tables let you shop your fellow diners’ plates (there is lots of oohing and aahing), and the stylish staff is happy to walk you through the decadent and innovative bistro menu. The lobster with escargot butter is everything. INSIDER TIP: In order to give the kitchen time to prepare the soufflé—which is excellent, BTW—you have to order it at the start of the meal. 185 Sullivan St., 212-418-1260; miminyc.com
NIX This Indian-inspired, veggie-heavy spot was the sleeper hit of 2016, with creative dishes like avocado, mint, and curry dip and ribbons of jicama with Fresno chili and blood oranges. CHUMLEY’S This West Village speakeasy was polished up before reopening, and the new gastro-chic surroundings get a menu to match from chef Victoria Blamey. Did New York City need another $25 burger? THE STANDARD HOTEL This Meatpacking District gamechanger has not one but two nightlife destinations, both with semi-haughty gatekeepers at the door. Le Bain is the rooftop bar and club, and the Top of the Standard (formerly the Boom Boom Room) is the gold-dusted lounge that specializes in beautifully balanced retro and modern cocktails in a setting that likes its glam with a side of glitz. NEW ON BROADWAY AMÉLIE Upon graduating from Juilliard, actress and singer Phillipa Soo began a swift rise through the ranks of young Broadway stars, from the acclaimed Off-Broadway premiere of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 to a Tony nod for best actress for her performance in Hamilton. Now she’s a headliner, starring as everyone’s favorite French charmer in this musical adaptation of the 2001 film. Walter Kerr Theatre, 219 W. 48th St., 800-982-2787; ameliebroadway.com

A BRONX TALE Robert De Niro and Chazz Palminteri reunite as director and writer, respectively, for this musical adaptation of Palminteri’s one-man-show-turnedHollywood-film. Alan Menken’s score is a low-level pastiche of lounge music and ’60s-era soul (with what sounds like a blatant rip-off of “You’re All I Need to Get By”), but Broadway favorite Nick Cordero gives an absolutely splendid performance as the charismatic gangster Sonny. CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY After the success of Matilda on Broadway, it was only a matter of time before Roald Dahl’s most famous story got a big-budget musical adaptation. Pitch Perfect’s Ben Platt stars as an anxiety-stricken teen in this acclaimed musical from La La Land composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The show is a bright-eyed, emotionally attuned reflection on the lives of lonely American teenagers in a hyperconnected, digitized world. Platt’s performance, built on pinpoint comic timing and an earnest, heart-piercing voice, is one of the highlights of the Broadway season. This two-acre property, listed at $16.95 million, overlooks 40 acres of protected land and also has ocean views. “It is a totally custom and unique Hamptons estate—pristine and situated in the southern heart of Sagaponack,” says Susan Breitenbach (above), a top broker with Corcoran. “It has everything imaginable.
WIDE OPEN SPACES THE ADJACENT FARMLAND MAKES SAGAPONACK HOMES SOME OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE IN THE COUNTRY. BY EMILY J. WEITZ
Sagaponack is listed in Forbes among the top five most expensive zip codes in the country every year. Part of what makes this tiny hamlet so desirable is its proximity to the ocean, so close you can feel the salt on your skin. But the other major asset of this area is the sweeping vistas, made possible by the acres and acres of active farmland. How do we keep these tracts of land in production when the value of a

potato or a sunflower can’t hold up to the value of square footage of a Sagaponack mansion? John Halsey, president of the Peconic Land Trust (296 Hampton Road, Southampton, 631-2380235; peconiclandtrust .org), has pondered this question for years, and he’s seen the community come together to preserve farmland and farming traditions even in the face of over-
whelming resale value. “At its roots, Sagaponack is an agricultural community with farmlands rolling to the ocean,” says Halsey. “But now you have a range of objectives people have in coming here, and I think it’s a challenge for a
community to maintain its soul and at the same time embrace the new.” Pike Farms, on Sagg Main Street in Sagaponack, used to rent its 7.6 acres from the Hopping family. When in 2010 the Hoppings decided to sell because of the estate

taxes they were facing, that land went on the market for $6 million. How could a farmer ever pay those prices? “The community raised over $1 million from a few hundred people,” says Halsey, “and the town and county and Land Trust played important roles in that purchase. We sold the property to the Pikes for around $25,000 an acre.” The only reason this was possible was that the development rights
were sold, and the land can and must be used for productive farming. With leg work like this, many of Sagaponack’s wide open expanses can be preserved. Corcoran broker Tim Davis (88 Main St., Southampton, 631-238-7300; corcoran .com) has lived on the East End his whole life, and he feels that Sagaponack is one of the few places where it seems “time stood still.” “The zoning never permitted commercial
development, and the Sagaponack General Store and post office were all that were needed to service the rural farm community,” says Davis. “The lack of commercial development allowed for more of an open space and big sky feeling. This is the appeal that continues to attract buyers who love the feeling of wide open landscapes with access to one of the most beautiful ocean beaches in the world.”

HAMPTONS TREND
GREAT ROOMS! EXPOSED BEAMS AND CATHEDRAL-STYLE CEILINGS ARE TRENDING AGAIN IN HAMPTONS HOME DESIGN.
Exposed beams are a reminder of the stability and structure of a house. Perhaps it’s this sense of grounding that people appreciate. Perhaps it’s confidence in the structure itself that the beams instill. “Exposed beams harken back to a simpler time, when buildings were more sturdy,” says Al Giaquinto, founder of Plum Builders (43 Pantigo Road, East Hampton, 631-3291300; plumbuilders.com). But in addition to their utilitarian function, exposed beams are a decidedly aesthetic choice. Particularly in the wide-open great rooms that have become a gathering place in so
102 GOTHAM-MAGAZINE.COM
many Hamptons homes, exposed beams seem more like accents than necessary loadbearing features. “Beams bring focal points and drama to a house,” says Gary DePersia (51 Main St., East Hampton, 631-8990215; corcoran.com), a licensed real estate broker with Corcoran. DePersia represents both historical and modern houses that make use of exposed beams for design and function. In either case, he says, they have an effect. Corcoran broker Michael Schultz (51 Main St., East Hampton, 631-8990254; corcoran.com) agrees. “Exposed wooden support beams

She also believes there’s a science to producing this kind of tranquil environment. “One has to understand the elements that create harmony,” she says. “Color, texture, shape, proportion, comfort, and lifestyle are essentials that I instinctively live by.” For Austin Handler of Mabley Handler Designs (34 Head of Pond Road, Water Mill,

In an age when people are plugged into their devices 24/7, it’s all the more important to have little corners of your life where you can let go. Depending on the design, interior spaces have the potential to instill a sense of serenity. With so much clutter piling up in the mind from Twitter feeds and to-do lists, physically clearing away the clutter in your life can be transformative. Debra Gildersleeve, an interior designer and the owner of Renee’s Mattituck (10095 Main Road, Mattituck, 631-2984223; reneesmattituck.com), suggests using pieces that double as storage, like ottomans and mirrored chests in the living room. “This is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to create a calm and peaceful environment,” she says, because it keeps unnecessary items

Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Although it’s more common in older women, ovarian cancer affects women of all ages, even in their 20s. There is no early detection test, and symptoms can be subtle. But while you can’t see it, you can take steps to get ahead of it by knowing your risk factors. Family history of cancer and presence of gene mutations like BRCA are risk factors, so talk to your family and your doctor. This information makes you less likely to ignore vague signs that could indicate disease. Meanwhile, promising collaborative research will continue to shed light on new advances in diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.

involved. “Clients who have an artistic background are comfortable having a dialogue about ideas,” he says. “They understand there’s a process. They inspire other ideas, because it’s something we’re sharing in an open conversation.” The most inspiring aspect of the process, Merrell finds, is
when a client comes with a set of ideas, and his firm has a set of ideas, and in the process of collaborating, new ideas are formed. He compares building a home to going on an adventure: It’s not just about the final product— the photos and souvenirs—it’s about the journey itself. “No
adventure is memorable if you don’t end up in a place you didn’t expect from the beginning,” Merrell muses. “Once you’re living in your house, you look around and see evidence of the adventure. The house itself dissolves in your mind, and you see this record of the creative process.”—E.J.W.
