“I may have an unhealthy obsession with sunsets. I love that they’re always different and unique. When people see clouds coming, they run away thinking that it’s going to storm, while I’m excited and want to stay outside to see what the skies will look like. I will walk along
the beach taking pictures no matter what the weather is like. “I go with the flow and will take pictures of everything and anything. But nothing beats a summer sunset. There’s always something happening. Birds coming in and out of the frame, clouds
changing positions, and crashing waves are fun to see through a lens. “I venture out to beaches with the best views. Amagansett always has a gorgeous sunrise. Finding a location that lines up perfectly with the sun is my dream. Even after the sun drops below the horizon,
there’s a beautiful shot of the afterglow when the colors pop and reflect on the water. When I’m not looking up at the sky, I try to focus on the people on the beach lit by the sunlight. But taking pictures of people has been more challenging than a sunset.”

The home features incredible indoor/outdoor living spaces, multiple decks and elevated landscaping that capture the myriad of panoramic views encompassing the sweeping dunes, natural reserve, ocean and surrounding historical architecture. The two level main house features a master suite, 2 guest suites with a central family room and powder room on the ground level. On the second level entertaining and living spaces with 360-degree views and breathtaking architectural details. On the exterior, a system of bronze bars was developed to hang the thick cedar siding boards in place without fastening through the wood, allowing the boards to expand and contract naturally with changes of temperature and humidity. Just behind the main house sits a guest cottage constructed with the same intent and precision as the main house. Featuring a supplementary master suite and guest suite, complete with living and entertaining spaces and mahogany decking, the guest cottage provides spectacular views, ocean breezes and additional privacy. Surrounded by over 30+ acres of protected natural reserves, unobstructed views will last a lifetime. 159 Atlantic isn’t just a beach house, or a quintessential Hamptons home, it’s an homage to the land, an historical reinterpretation, and a work of art.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
With my husband and Kyle MacLachlan. This summer Kyle launches his very first rosé.
This issue of Hamptons magazine is one that is particularly special to me. We feature the hyper-chic Sagaponack home of Sean Spellman, whom I have known since the ’90s, when we worked together at Vogue. To watch friends become innovators and entrepreneurs gives me such unbelievable joy. Sean has collaborated with the likes of Annie Leibovitz, Mikael Jansson, Norman Jean Roy, and Tom Munro, to name a few—he’s an unbelievably talented stylist, but his true love of design stems from simply great taste. It’s all about a takeover, and my bet is that he’s going to be quietly and elegantly designing and building houses in little pockets of undiscovered beauty. The Sagaponack home he designed, built, and entertains so beautifully in with his husband, Jaime Morales, can be seen on page 90 of this issue. We also share Aerin Lauder’s insights on the 10th anniversary of the East Hampton Antiques Show and Kyle
MacLachlan’s thoughts on the launch of his new rosé. Britt Maren is the subject of our new “Model Citizen” column, where we take a fun dive into the super underworld of the coolest on the catwalk and the businesses they are building out East. Marc Murphy dishes on the perfect summer recipe, and, speaking of culinary classics, we give you all of the details on the James Beard Foundation’s Chefs & Champagne. And then, of course, there is fashion and our cover star, Naomi Watts, who shines in summer’s most beautiful dresses, talks about coming off her blockbuster hit Allegiant, and gives us the scoop on her next film, Shut In. Enjoy the weekend!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
Yachting around Palm Beach in February just before we held our Real Estate Roundtable focused on Palm Beach with Michael Braverman, Richard Steinberg, Michael Cinque, Amy Slack, Susan Davis, Tim Davis, Renee Steinberg, and David Greenberg.
Real estate is the most talked-about subject in the Hamptons. It is defined as property comprised of land and the buildings on it as well as the natural resources of the land, including uncultivated flora and fauna, farmed crops and livestock, water and minerals. Although the “real estate market” is often looked at from the perspective of residential living, real estate can be grouped into three broad categories based on its use: residential, commercial, and industrial. Examples of residential real estate are undeveloped land, houses, condominiums, and townhomes; commercial encompasses office buildings, warehouses, and retail store buildings; and industrial includes factories, mines, and farms. Real estate in the
Hamptons has historically gone up in price, even though in uncertain times there have been market corrections. We devote this issue to real estate, which will always be a big topic of conversation at cocktail parties here on the East End! In this issue, we have the lovely and dynamic actress Naomi Watts gracing our cover. Watts has spent a good deal of time in the Hamptons and has been a part of the community, raising her kids here in the summers. In fact, her brother, Ben Watts, is a New Yorkbased photographer who has been photographing (and enjoying) Montauk since the time he first came to the area. This weekend, we celebrate the Ellen Hermanson Starry Night Summer Gala on the grounds of the Southampton
Hospital, Family Day at the Children’s Museum of the East End, and the James Beard Foundation’s annual Chefs & Champagne benefit on the grounds of Wölffer Estate Vineyard. Be sure to check out the newest Audi models, which will be on display for the occasion at our custom taste and test lounge at this event. Take a moment to breathe and look around at the beautiful natural surrounds we are so fortunate to have here on the East End, take the kids and support our local children’s museum, visit Wölffer Vineyard and support the Chefs & Champagne gala, and if I don’t see you there, I’ll see you in town!

paula de la cruz
douglas friedman
Paula de la Cruz is a graphic and textile designer, botanist, and illustrator who also writes for many publications, including The New York Times and Air France. In this issue of Hamptons, she speaks with landscape designer Perry Guillot about how to make the most of the East End’s best views. If you could design your dream garden, what would it look like? A grove of koa trees, ferns, and orchids, which I am designing in Hawaii. What do you love about Perry Guillot’s landscape designs? Perry’s gardens are very dynamic and geometric at once— something incredibly hard to achieve.
Born and raised in New York City, photographer Douglas Friedman began his career in the film industry, working on movies such as The Game and Fight Club. He eventually left Hollywood and traveled the world photographing everything he came across, and has since contributed to GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, and many other publications. Friedman shot fashion editor and stylist Sean Spellman’s gorgeous Sagaponack home in “Basic Black.” What was the best thing about the shoot? Laughing the day away with Sean (one of my oldest friends from the late ’90s). What were you hoping to capture? The home was beautiful and muted, and I wanted to capture the serene masculinity of the space.

Carolyn Murphy
Named one of Crain’s New York’s 40 Under 40, Scott Feldman is a 25-year veteran of the hospitality and lifestyle industry who has managed the careers of some of the most notable talents in the epicurean space. Feldman talks all things Hamptons, food, and beyond with Chopped judge and restaurateur Marc Murphy. What did you enjoy most about your interview with Marc Murphy? His little secrets about where to go out East. Don’t tell! What is your ideal Hamptons food day? Breakfast at Estia’s Little Kitchen, a trip to Balsam Farms, and grilling on my new DCS 48-inch toy with friends.
Carolyn Murphy is an international supermodel, the longest-serving face of Estée Lauder, design director of Shinola, writer, and mother who spends her summers out East. In “Basic Black,” Murphy introduces us to her dear friend, stylist Sean Spellman, and gives us a peek into the aesthetic of his Hamptons home. What are your ingredients for a perfect summer? The beach, friends, family, horses, endless games of cards and chess, reading, and lots of sleeping. What are your favorite Hamptons hangout spots? Sean [Spellman]’s house, my house, Aerin [Lauder]’s house, Gibson Beach, Shelter Island for sailing, and occasionally dinner at The Crow’s Nest.

Summer is shaping up to be the most stylish season yet, as we marked the Fourth of July with a joyful celebration hosted by Chrissy Teigen. The model and social-media maven celebrated Independence Day with a cookout and pool party in Southampton. With a guest list that included John Legend and Emily Ratajkowski, it was a starstudded bash. The holiday festivities continued with Southampton Fresh Air Home’s annual American Picnic and a posh dinner, attended by Brooke Shields and Donna Karan, in honor of the “Water | Bodies” exhibition opening at the Southampton Arts Center.

Q In your many years of measuring Q With interest rates hovering near Q After real estate and its related markets around the globe, what is the most important or leading market indicator that sellers and buyers should always pay attention to?
A For a healthy housing market to
be sustained you need to have positive job growth, consumer confidence, and affordability. We watch the number of listings in markets to gage if supply is rising and the potential impact on prices. In addition, we focus on lifestyle/ demographics and then increases/ decreases in interest rates and mortgage lending availability. As lenders add new products or reduce stringency housing accelerates but too much easing will cause an eventual downturn as we all now remember only too well. Lastly, you really have to segment the market by price point and location and watch spec inventory of new construction.
historic lows and inflation below the Fed's target, what do you see on the horizon for mortgage rates and ease of borrowing?
A We think rates will remain low and
even more importantly the long end of the curve which is what mortgage rates are priced off of will stay low especially in light of the Brexit which has all but eliminated the likelihood of any future rate hike this year.
a 2-3 year period of unprecedented growth in home sales and prices for the New York market, we're undergoing an adjustment period and what some are saying is a return to normal market conditions. What's your short and long-term view of the New York real estate market?
A We agree the market will adjust
at the super luxury price point as the supply boom in the $4MM plus has gotten ahead of diminishing demand (the dollar strengthened and foreign buyers fell off). We believe it’s a buyers’ market and sellers will negotiate and therefore it’s a great time to buy for longer-term buyers.
Q New
development in New York City is abundant and it will take time to absorb all of the available product, particularly the luxury market (product priced at $4MM and above). Is it a buyer's market in new development and what can we expect to see from developers?
A Negotiation big time. They need
to move the inventory but they will be careful to do so as many contracts were signed in 2014 at peak prices that could be off as much as 30% and they are delivering this year and next.

Q Research
and statistics from our global affiliate Knight Frank Residential suggest that New York City (NYC) will surpass London as the most expensive real estate in the world by 2025. Shouldn't people be buying now?
A I’m not sure if that will happen but
yes today is a great time to buy. London in the luxury market is experiencing the same over supply dynamics as NYC and Miami and will likely correct so where it stabilizes and the magnitude of the decline will determine if NYC surpasses London. The only caveat is that as the pound declines and the U.S. dollar strengthens as a result of Brexit, we could see more capital move into London real estate over New York City by foreign bargain buyers in the short-term.

“Wine has always played a significant part in my life,” says actor Kyle MacLachlan, “even when I was auditioning for the role in Dune, the first film I ever did and my first film with David Lynch. During our interview, before he even put me on film, we talked about being from the Northwest, and we talked about our shared love of red wine, and so after my first screen test, David sent me a bottle of red wine as a gesture, and we didn’t really know each other that well. I had met him and auditioned with him, and he very graciously sent over this bottle of wine. It’s kind of figured into my life.” The maverick director and wine are converging once again for MacLachlan, who is gearing up for Showtime’s reboot of Lynch’s iconic 1990s series Twin Peaks, while Blushing Bear, a rosé from the actor’s wine label, is set to debut this summer. MacLachlan launched the label, Pursued by Bear, in 2005 with a Cabernet-Merlot blend, and three years later he added a Syrah called îî

return home to do it there.” His father has since passed away, but the family tradition lives on: His 8-year-old son loves going to the winery each summer. “It’s fun for a kid because there’s all sorts of things that are different to look at,” MacLachlan says. “The barrel rooms are wonderful and cool, and they have the smell of this beautiful oak combined with the fermenting wine, and there’s always a few dogs wandering around, because wineries and dogs just go together, so he loves playing with the animals.” The Walla Walla area is fairly rural, he adds, so they also go fishing and visit the goats on a friend’s farm. “It’s really a chance for Callum to get into rural nature in the manner
in which I grew up, and being a kid in New York City, he doesn’t have that opportunity much, so I look forward to it every summer.” Twin Peaks, of course, is set in the Northwest as well. “I’m very excited about Twin Peaks,” MacLachlan says, “and I’m very excited to see what the reception is going to be, because it’s David Lynch, I think, at his best. Right now he’s really in a place that’s just wonderfully creative and inspirational, so he’s at the top of his game.”
MacLachlan and his wife, Desiree Gruber, get out to the Hamptons each summer from their home in Manhattan. They met in 1999 while living in Los Angeles. “Shortly thereafter, I started filming Sex and the City,” he says, “and so there I was, working in New York, and she brought me out. We would go to visit her brother, who would get a house every summer. It’s such a great escape from New York.” Blushing Bear is available at Amagansett Wine & Spirits, 203 Main St., Amagansett, 267-3939

The new rosé is made from three varietals, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Cinsaut. “All three are part of a classic blend of what I think makes a great rosé,” he says. “I like a blend for my rosé.” He describes it as pale pink, refreshing, and beautifully aromatic, with strawberry and melon overtones. Even though Long Island has excellent wineries, MacLachlan produces his in the Columbia Valley of Washington, his home state, because he wanted to involve his father. “He loved the whole idea of making wine and drinking wine,” the actor says, “and he was a gentleman farmer, so that’s a big reason why I chose to

Who: Britt Maren, 26 Why you know her: She has walked runways from New York to Milan to Paris, but this blonde Texan took her career-defining turn opening Alexander Wang’s Spring 2011 show and set fashion’s collective tongue wagging. “That show exposed me to a lot of different people and took me to the next level,” says Maren. Since then, she has done campaigns with Isabel Marant, Balenciaga, Sephora, and Garnier. Fast-forward to now: Along with her husband, New York-based caterer Derek Orrell, Maren is planning to open a bakery and restaurant in Austin, Texas, where they keep a home. “Derek would be the food side and I’d be involved in design and business management. I’m organized and love to plan. I also love to bake and have a giant sweet tooth.” On becoming a lifestyle brand: Maren recently launched a website, BrittMaren.com, indulging in her obsessions with wellness, fashion, beauty, and food. “People are always asking me what I do to stay in shape or what I use to wash my face, so I wanted to share what I’m lusting after,” she says. Go-to Montauk spots: She loves hanging at Ruschmeyer’s, where Orrell used to help run the kitchen. And they enjoy toting their puggle, Zeus, to the dog park at Montauk Point State Park. Says Maren, “It’s this big open field and he gets in the water and loves it.”

From Aspen to East Hampton By Kaitlynn Miller
“The thing I love most about helping individuals buy art is seeing the excitement that the collector has when a piece is placed in their home,” says Robert Casterline of Casterline Goodman Gallery and Art Advisory. Casterline, along with co-owner Jordan Goodman, recently

expanded their business from Aspen to East Hampton in an effort to be more available to their clients, many of whom vacation and have second homes in the area during the summer. The new space is located on Newtown Lane, making it “convenient for collectors
to stop in and check out current shows,” explains Casterline. The gallery, which specializes in postwar and contemporary art, also acts as a boutique advisory firm where Casterline and Goodman consult clients and assist them in expanding their art collections with pieces from both
established and emerging artists. With a combined 30 years in the business and a staff that travels the world to research the current global art market, Casterline and Goodman offer advisory services with an educational focus—they supply the client with information about the market, including the
individual artists that interest the client, as well as educate them on the investment aspect of their purchases. Says Casterline, “Whether it’s for decorating or investment, art buyers always need good advice.” 46 Newtown Lane, East Hampton, 527-5525; casterlinegoodman.com

life on the farm
In 2013, Nick Voulgaris III had just finished his coffeetable book Hinckley Yachts: An American Icon when he learned that Kerber’s Farm was about to be developed into condos. Having grown up in Huntington, Long Island, Voulgaris had often visited Kerber’s as a child (back then it sold only poultry and was where his family sourced turkeys and chickens for holidays). The timing was right, and Voulgaris bought the farm. “It was a neat opportunity to save it and re-create a nostalgic place that had long been an icon for a lot of people on Long Island,” he says. “I really rolled up my sleeves and learned all about organic farming, beekeeping, and communicated a lot with the original owners’ son to

learn what kind of ingredients they used.” Today the farm is thriving, and fans are very enthusiastic about everything from the Kerberry pies (made of strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry); the breakfast cheddar cheese buttermilk biscuit egg sandwich; and the honey sourced from its nine beehives. Sipping Champagne and slurping oysters with a water view is an idyllic Hamptons experience—until whiffs of diesel waft to your table and loud motorboats shatter the calmness. For nearly three decades, however, Dockers Waterside Marina & Restaurant in East Quogue has made it a point to preserve this serenity. Whether you’re seated in one of two outdoor dining rooms or the trio of bars, each seat overlooks the natural surroundings. “Being at Dockers is like being on vacation,” says Scott Hastings, the executive chef for the past seven years. “It’s this right mix of calmness and relaxation you feel when you’re at the beach.” For longtime fans, the seasonal American fare has been just as much of a draw. One of the most popular dishes is a tuna served two ways. The big-eye tuna is flown in daily from Hawaii before Hastings sears a center cut of the fish dusted in sesame seeds. It’s then paired with tuna tartare served with a wakame salad, tobiko, wasabi, pickled ginger, and a bed of microgreens. In addition to seven different preparations of tuna on the menu, locally sourced fish, oysters, and clams are featured all summer long. The no-frills experience is focused on letting the food and scenery speak for themselves, according to Hastings. “I like to think we have a total package.” 94 Dune Road, East Quogue, 6530653; dockerswaterside.com

SEASONED TO PERFECTION CHOPPED JUDGE AND LANDMARC RESTAURATEUR MARC MURPHY SHARES HIS EAST END INSPIRATION. BY SCOTT FELDMAN
You live in Bridgehampton—what led you to that area? [My family and I] landed in Bridgehampton because to us it feels the most centrally located, and apart from Montauk or the Dunes, which are both a little too far east for us, our area feels super beachy and relaxed, which we love. You are known to entertain a bit during the summer. What is your advice for using the house as a place to entertain? We love to host huge lunches out here. The trick is to keep it simple, keep the menu light and easy, and keep the rosé flowing. We also have a

huge picnic table on our deck, which keeps things feeling casual. And after lunch, everyone can pass out on the beach or by the pool! If you had a chance to be anywhere else out East, where would it be? I would probably choose the Dunes in Amagansett. My wife grew up out there, and that area is all about the beach, which is what I love the most. What is your top summer activity if not cooking? Boogie boarding with my kids and any other adults willing to go out in the ocean with me! What is your favorite
summer ingredient? Tomatoes. I grow them at home, and there’s always a great selection from the farmstands. Where are the best clams and lobster out East? Clam Bar is casual and cool. It’s no frills but good service, and the lobster roll and clams are great. Don’t miss the steamers! What was the most fun about writing Season with Authority? It’s my first cookbook, so getting some of my favorite recipes down on paper and sharing them with the world was something that was really special. I love seeing how people try
them at home and share them through social media. That’s a fun thing where you can see the dish through their eyes. What is the scariest thing you have ever done? I’d have to say opening my first restaurant. That was a big risk, but it’s been so rewarding. Why did you become a chef? School was always really hard for me because I’m dyslexic, so I needed to find something that would allow me to succeed. My brother happened to be enrolled at a cooking school, and I decided to try it out. Once I was there, I was hooked, and the kitchen
was the first place I really found that made me feel like I belonged. What is your favorite tool of the trade? Right now, I’m really loving the cleaver from the Chopped collection on HSN. I might be slightly biased, but it is a great tool! Who in your life inspired you and made the biggest impact on you? My grandfather was an engineer and had an amazing work ethic, which I translated into my cooking career. I always remembered how hard he worked, and that stuck with me. What is the Hamptons for you? It’s quality time with family and friends. Your favorite summer cocktail? A Negroni. Favorite spot in the Hamptons? The bocce court in my backyard.

Andrea Correale (above), who founded Elegant Affairs more than 20 years ago, can elevate a humble clambake into a stylish, sophisticated soirée (top). Her company caters over 600 events per year, from corporate gatherings to vineyard weddings to beach parties. Her clients have included Ralph Lauren, Jimmy Choo, and Cirque du Soleil, as well as Billy Joel, Russell Simmons, Kevin Spacey, and Mitt Romney.

How did you get into the catering business? I started the company when I was 16 years old, basically out of my parents’ house. How would you define your catering style? Full service. There are three key ingredients to Elegant Affairs: restaurant-quality cuisine, impeccable service, and stylish presentation. But we leave no stone unturned—we take care
of all the clients’ needs, from entertainment to glassware to valet service. What kinds of events do you love to cater? I call them “staycation parties” and they’re amazing Hamptons poolside soirées that last all day. People will come by in the afternoon and we’ll make the home feel like a resort. We’ll set up a grill with a burger bar that has every topping imaginable and a water bar with
infused waters. Then at night we’ll do a Hamptons-style clambake or a cocktail bash. Any signature dishes? Something perfect for Hamptons entertaining is our fresh-catch seafood paella, which is prepared in this 48-inch pan in front of all the guests, so people can really get that interactive culinary experience. What is the Hamptons to you? It’s a summer playground for sophisticated adults, a place where they can go to relax and yet have the high-end amenities they’re accustomed to. “It was always in the back of my mind that we should sell actual boxes one day,” says Brett Heyman, Edie Parker’s founder and designer. Heyman has become famous for her acrylic box clutches, favored by celebrities such as Karlie Kloss and Kerry Washington, who are often seen carrying personalized varieties emblazoned with their names. Named for one of Heyman’s two children, the brand has expanded from offering a simple box shape to so much more: circular bags featuring cheeky jellyfish, bags with embroidered raffia shells, and even a fold-over-flap chain bag with a simple acrylic rod. There are also whimsical acrylic charms in shapes such as smiley faces, hearts, and rainbows. The entire collection is happy and playful, retro and modern at the same time. “I love the look of acrylic,” says Heyman of her somewhat unusual medium. “Working with it, I love its versatility. It can be molded into any shape, cut with a laser, be made simply or like a 100-piece puzzle.” It’s part of the love she has for the whole midcentury aesthetic: She originally founded the brand as a way to create the sort of vintage-inspired bags she coveted but couldn’t find after collecting many from the 1950s and 1960s over the years. îî

As for their popularity, Heyman doesn’t think it’s all that surprising: “Vintage-inspired items, especially acrylic, still look good. It looks good in retro homes, traditional homes, modern homes— and because the material is durable, the pieces don’t show wear the way traditional fabrics do.” Acrylic, her core material, “is considered a luxury material because we color-match and hand-pour our sheets,” giving clients the ability to customize their bags, not only with their names but by choosing the font, clasp, color, and shape. The bags

are all made in America, in keeping with the integrity of her Midcentury Modern predecessors, and her home line now includes hand-poured acrylic coasters (Heyman’s favorite Hamptons hostess gift), trays, place mats, and jewelry boxes. “So many men and women would constantly remark that they wanted to put Edie Parker acrylic bags on their tables and shelves as decorative items,” says Heyman. STYLE BUY THE BEACH New York-based contemporary womenswear designer Ramy Brook Sharp designed a collection of luxe cover-ups, like the Ibiza ($265).
A COVER-UP STORY DESIGNER RAMY BROO SHARP OF RAMY BROOK TALKS CREATIVITY, COVERUPS, AND SUMMER STYLE.
“I’ve always admired during my travels how women in St. Barts or St. Tropez add a bit of excitement with their cover-ups,” says designer Ramy Brook Sharp, a stylish fixture out East who is debuting a line of her own cover-ups this season. “I want to bring that sensibility to the Hamptons. Women in the Hamptons are so beautiful, with great style.”
76 HAMPTONS-MAGAZINE.COM
Sharp has been designing her eponymous line of colorful silk day-to-night pieces since 2010, and the transition into beachwear seemed like the perfect next move. “I’ve always loved wearing cover-ups to the beach and the pool. They are an easy way to look put together during vacation or while enjoying a warm afternoon,” she says. Wanting to ensure her customers are getting the
best, Sharp has limited her fabric to 20 yards for each style, so the garments feel bespoke and special to each and every wearer. The one-size-fits-all pieces come in five styles, all named for people and places important to Sharp: the Harley, a handkerchiefhem cover-up named after her niece; the St. Barts, a short style named after one of Sharp’s favorite vacation destinations; the Nadia, a
high-low evening style “inspired by one of my most glamorous friends”; the sexy St. Tropez; and a knotted cape style called the Ibiza. Sharp believes in the versatility of beach dressing, noting that “my daughter Stevie and I love to wear the St. Barts with flats or flip-flops for a casual look,” while the St. Tropez “has a button closure that can be worn
open or closed—think of all the sexy women dancing on the tables in St. Tropez!— depending on how saucy you want it.” This spirited personality can be seen throughout the designs, making the limited-edition styles a must-have. Look for Sharp sporting one at her many philanthropic events during the summer. Kyle by Alene Too, 5 Main St., Southampton, 353-3174; ramybrook.com

STYLE COLLABORATIONS
Made for Good
Gabby Sabharwal was fed up with the state of swimsuits in 2012: No one was doing mix-and-match separates anymore, and no one had tapped into sophisticated prints in flattering silhouettes made for active women. Giejo (her childhood nickname, pronounced gee-jo) was born, and this summer she’s paired up with Madewell to bring beachgoers the best of both of their worlds. “The collab was a no-brainer for us,” says Sabharwal. “The Giejo and Madewell girl are one and the same— effortless, dynamic, cultured, social, and independent. We were excited to tap into Madewell’s creative minds and cult following.” There are 11 styles in all, six of which are exclusive to select Madewell stores and online. The swim offerings are made locally in New York from reclaimed textiles, adding a vintage flair to the two-pieces and maillots. There’s a group that has contrasting maroon and poppy pink blocks, as well as one with striking, simple black and white stripes, all available to mix and match based on the wearer’s mood. Madewell is no stranger to collaborations—just this year, they’ve collaborated with J.M. Drygoods, Sapling Press, and others under their Labels We Love program. Joyce Lee, Madewell’s head of design, shares that for her brand, “Giejo checks all of the boxes. The suits are feminine but have sporty cuts that will keep everything in place, and are made in the USA. They’re exactly what the Madewell girls want to be wearing at the beach this summer.” The Gate at Manhasset, 1950 Northern Blvd., 516-365-3762; madewell.com; shopgiejo.com

aomi Watts looks relaxed and happy even as a paparazzi photographer trails she and her husband, actor Liev Schreiber, and their two little boys, Sasha, 7, and Kai, 6, back to their Tribeca apartment. The actress has not had much time lately for routine errands. Between this year and last, her name has appeared on eight different movies, including some of the most acclaimed projects of her career. Birdman, While We’re Young, and St. Vincent were fêted by critics and honored on the awards circuit, and Watts is now a full-fledged sci-fi icon as well. As the abused wife turned rebellion leader in the popular Divergent series, Watts returns for a second time as the butt-kicking antagonist, Evelyn Eaton, in Allegiant (in theaters now). The actress joined the massively popular franchise, based on the YA novels by Veronica Roth, after killing off Kate Winslet’s character in last spring’s Insurgent. “We needed someone who could play brittle and damaged on the outside and yet carry immense power under the surface, and Naomi delivers that magical mix and makes it look effortless,” says Doug Wick, the series co-producer. “She’s also someone who’s just, you know, great to hang out and gossip with.” The part is a departure for Watts, who at this stage in her career had not quite pictured herself heading a rat-a-tat army in a dystopian walled-in version of Chicago. “It’s something of a stretch but in terms of character, Evelyn is someone I can appreciate,” Watts says. “She is a survivor and she’s made the most of her experience despite a bunch of twists and setbacks.” At 47, Watts gets major points herself for endurance. She struggled for years to find steady footing in Hollywood after a childhood that she describes as “less than consistent.” Born in seaside Shoreham, England, and reared there and in Wales, Watts was 4 when her mom, an antiques dealer and designer, split from her dad, a road manager and sound engineer for Pink Floyd. Peter Watts, whose voice and manic laughter can be heard in the background on the album Dark Side of the Moon, died of an apparent heroin overdose when Naomi was just 7. “I wish I could say otherwise but I don’t have any clear memories of my father,” Watts says. (The rock gene lives on nevertheless. Watts recently posted a shot of herself backstage with David Bowie to mark the

singer’s passing in January.) Watts and her older brother, Ben, a photographer who lives near her in Manhattan and Amagansett, relocated to Australia with their mother and stepdad when Naomi was 14. “Mum was young and did not have much of a plan,” Watts says. “I think there’s a combination of grit and perseverance and tricking yourself into believing things are okay even if you’re not getting the results you want—that’s what I learned from her. Even if you’re being batted around, you keep going. It’s basic human determination.” Watts caught the acting bug after seeing the movie Fame at a young age, and took drama classes in Australia before heading off to Japan for a modeling stint in her late teens. Success was spotty at first. She landed a part in an Australian romance, For Love Alone, in 1986, but the roles that followed were of the type that now makes for amusing late-night YouTube viewing. When she was around 18, Watts, wearing ’80s hair bows and shoulder pads, shot a Tampax commercial for Australian TV. But even that was a bridge to somewhere. “I was fresh out of school and wasn’t thinking, This is so humiliating,” she says. “I was thinking, Fantastic! A paycheck. Now I can buy a Mini Cooper and drive myself to auditions rather than taking three buses and a train.” In one of her acting classes, Watts met another rising talent who would soon burst onto the global stage and help open doors for her. Nicole Kidman was a friend and early mentor and the name above the marquee in Flirting, the 1991 boarding-school romance that was Watts’s first real break in Hollywood. “Nic was incredibly generous in introducing me to people and showing me that an Aussie girl from around the corner can make it big,” Watts says. But as Kidman continued to soar with blockbusters like Far and Away and Batman Forever, Watts, who was now living full-time in LA, scraped the barrel with gigs like the TV movie Bermuda Triangle and the straight-to-video train wreck Children of the Corn IV. She recalls that period as a time spent “driving 45 minutes deep into the San Fernando Valley to wait as six actors auditioned before me, only to have to sit in two more hours of traffic on the 405 freeway coming home.” None of it made Watts give up. “I would play mental games with myself,” she says. “Rather than dwell on why I didn’t have this role or that opportunity, I would say, ‘Well, I do have a SAG card and I do have an agent and I am perfectly fine until the right something comes along.’” That something would be Mulholland Drive. Even after more than a decade in the business,
Watts was an unknown in David Lynch’s 2001 noir mystery. She plays a wide-eyed Midwestern starlet new to LA who puts aside her dreams of fame to help an amnesiac woman figure out her true identity. Major surrealism ensues. There are torrid lesbian scenes, a frightening cowboy, and a miniature elderly couple that comes crawling out of a mysterious box. Moviegoers went “Huh?” but the film became an instant cult classic. Agents started chasing Watts down with scripts. Big directors wanted to meet her. Children of the Corn V would have to wait. Watts received her first Academy Award nomination two years later as a recovering drug addict struggling to live a normal suburban existence in 21 Grams. She followed that with standout performances in the offbeat comedy I Heart Huckabees and opposite Sean Penn in The Assassination of Richard Nixon. Watts played muse to Hollywood’s most famous gorilla in Peter Jackson’s King Kong remake and earned another Oscar nod for 2012’s The Impossible, based on a true story about a mother swept up by the 2004 tsunami that struck Thailand. Horror fans loved her in the sleeper hit The Ring and its sequel. “Even if you feel completely connected to the material it often doesn’t go the way you think it will,” Watts says. “It’s no different than anything else in life. You can’t calculate how things will turn out. All you can do is try to have fun, push yourself to do well, be with people you love being with, and stay in the moment. The rest is basically out of your hands.”
B
ack inside her apartment, Watts is enjoying a rare hiatus from early call times and long days on location. She was up early to meditate, then fixed breakfast for the kids, caught up on phone calls, and may sneak in a workout before turning to a couple scripts her agent wants her to consider. Watts is on the board of the New York Academy of Art and for a decade has been a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for a program helping to raise awareness of AIDS issues. Still, her schedule today is blissfully open. “My biggest challenge,” she says, “might be figuring out whether to read the boys one of the Narnia books or Harry Potter.” Watts and Schreiber try as much as possible not to be working at the same time so that one of them can focus on parenthood exclusively. They never married, but they have vowed to keep things as stable as possible for Sasha and Kai. Watts recently purchased a large-scale painting by British artist Harland Miller. It is part of a series in which he reimagines covers of vintage
Penguin books. This one is a made-up volume titled Love Stretch Me No Longer in This Rough World. Those words hit a chord the minute Watts saw the piece in the gallery, she says. Before she and Schreiber got together, Watts dated Heath Ledger for several years. Asked if coupling is harder when both people are well-known, Watts does not hesitate. “Relationships are hard whether you’re famous or not,” she says. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have to work on it. Being an actor doesn’t change anything. I’m sure it’s the same if you’re a doctor or a couple of lawyers. You have high-pressure jobs, lots of hours, stresses that come at you unexpectedly— and you have to figure out how to be present in the midst of it all.” Watts knows her kids are about to burst through the door and make the day all about mommy time, which is more than fine with her. Her schedule is about to go bonkers again. Watts costars with Schreiber later this year in The Bleeder about the life of heavyweight fighter Chuck Wepner (the film shot in New York so both actors could be at home). In November, she appears opposite Oliver Platt in the psychological thriller Shut In. She recently wrapped production on The Book of Henry, a crime drama about a precocious boy who falls for the daughter of the New York City Police Commissioner. Watts plays the boy’s single mom. She also has another Divergent installment ahead—Ascendant hits theaters in 2017. Watts is reluctant to say this is the culmination of everything she struggled to achieve on those drives out to the Valley. “This isn’t the life I imagined,” she says. “In many ways, it’s far, far better, and yet I look at what’s possible—I mean, look at Frances McDormand or Helen Mirren or, come on, Meryl Streep—and I go, ‘Okay, there’s still a lot of room to grow and improve.’” The trick is to do that and still appreciate what you have. When Watts was making King Kong in the early 2000s, she paid a visit to Fay Wray, the legendary star of the original 1933 film. Watts and Peter Jackson and a few others crammed into Wray’s tiny book-lined apartment on New York’s Upper West Side as Wray, who was in her 90s and near the end of her life, told story after story about a career that spanned 57 years. “Something beautiful happened near the end,” Watts says, her voice growing soft. “She leaned over and whispered in my ear. The specific words are a blur now but the feeling was that she was passing the baton. It wasn’t from her to me specifically but more like her generation making room for a new one. ‘It’s your turn. It’s your moment.’ Since then, I always think, you have to be awake to that.”

here is always that one friend of yours that seems to have an innate sense of style, a way of putting their life together so effortlessly that you can only surmise they were born with it. My dear friend Sean Spellman is a case in point. I can venture to say that no detail is overlooked, and the greatest reflection of his ease is the “black house.” Yes, it is a house that is painted black, simple and straightforward. If anyone else were to say they were painting their house black, I’d scoff at it, and admittedly it had crossed my mind towards his seemingly odd idea. Mind you, this was just another testament to Sean’s design ability—it is perfect, it is chic, it is enviable, and nobody else could pull it off. There is a beautiful contradiction to this abode, especially since Sean has an obvious New England way about him (there goes white clapboard with shutters). Going against the grain from time to time, never forced and always natural, the layers are built on a foundation of necessity, on a mix of “high” and never too “low.” From the grained gray floors, carefully hued and adorned walls, woven rugs and baskets, bits and baubles of “where did you find that” accents, there is nothing precious; in fact it is more organic and almost utilitarian in feel. But leave it to Sean to keep us guessing, just when we secretly snap a photo of every vignette to try to emulate. He is always evolving, changing, removing (I’ve been on the lucky receiving end of that), adding and taking away. In typical Sean fashion, he will always have his lifestyle appear to be finished but never completely “done.”

Sean, you know about my adoration of your black house. You truly built this from the ground up, correct? Yes, I bought a little chicken coop and knocked it down. I loved the property and decided I wanted to start from scratch. Did you always know you wanted to have a black house? It is simply so different than anything else in the Hamptons. Chic, indeed! I grew up in New England where [there is] a very strict design sense, which I adhere to in the way I style a shoot or person and the way I live. New England was surrounded by Colonial homes, and I remember seeing a black house as a child that I was drawn to because of its simplicity and shape. Tell me about the process of building and designing your first house. I loved it. I drew and designed the house and worked with an engineer and local contractor to bring it to life. I bought it in the spring of 2011 and moved in by August of 2012. I had always seen this house in my head. Like when I style a shoot, I knew exactly what I wanted it to look like, and it’s a utilitarian design. What’s your favorite part of the house? The garden! I planted every tree; it was a barren piece of land. No matter what time I get home from any flight, I check my plants, water my pots. This is really

my creation. I worked with Augustine and Cathy at Broadview Gardens, and the outdoor space is still evolving. You can never stop planting. In the summer, I have planters filled with jasmine, lavender, geranium, and hydrangeas. I keep it simple with not too many different flowers or plants. I like uniformity. What’s a typical weekend day for you? Walk on the beach, have a little lunch for a few friends. The beauty of a small house is you can only have small groups over. I love the outside because my life revolves around dogs and my garden—most weekends, I have four to five dogs roaming around; my friend Carolyn’s pups Emerson and Rupert come for an afternoon swim with my dogs Archer and Bunny. Let’s go inside and talk about the framework of your home. All of the living is in the center of the house. The inside feels like a loft apartment, with bedrooms on either side. It is an open floor plan. My main requirements were lots of bookshelves for my reference library of first-edition art and design books, and high ceilings and flat wall space for large-format photography, such as Annie Leibovitz, Walter Yoos, Martin Thomson, Albert Maizel, and Wing Shya. There is such wonderful energy in your house. In part it is due to the color palette, correct? The overall feeling is simple and calm with great energy—there are wet dogs most days, so nothing is too precious. It has a neutral palette. I used the same colors throughout in the master and guest bedrooms. There is a pale gray for the walls and ceilings to complement the oak floors, which I bleached and stained a matte gray. There are ceiling-to-floor casement windows so the house feels bigger; your eye is never stopped by a wall, and from every angle you can look outdoors.

AquA ViVA— ShoShanna GruSS Keen on having her three children experience the same good times she enjoyed in the Hamptons during her youth, fashion designer Shoshanna Gruss spends the entire summer—and part of the winter, too—with her kids in her classic shingle-style home in North Haven. “It’s pretty high on a bluff, and it looks out onto the water and faces Shelter Island and you can see the sun set,” she says. “I wanted a house where my kids would want to stay and be.” Not surprisingly, what appeals to the children most about the house are the pools—one indoors and the other out. “We literally spend 80 percent of our day in the water,” says Gruss.

“One of my friends calls us the ‘aqua family.’” Her 11-year-old daughter is partial to the T-shaped indoor pool, which features a lap lane down the middle. “She likes to spend time there with her friends because it also includes a screening room,” adds Gruss, whose Shoshanna apparel line is in sync with her lifestyle in the Hamptons. “One of the main parts of my clothing collection is the swim lines,” she says, adding that they’re heavily influenced by her East End experience. “I launched the children’s swim line when my first daughter was born. It was inspired by my frustration with what was not out there that I believed could be and should be.” When friends and family come to visit, the outdoor pool is the focal point.

ummertime, and the living is easy—especially when it’s happening in or around a pool. For some Hamptonites a pool is a luxury, but for others it’s a must. And special features, or even multiple pools for different purposes, are gaining popularity on the East End. “Many of our newest designs feature things like oversize steps, benches, and sun shelves or shallow lounging areas, as these can provide great spaces to splash and play with children or lounge while reading a good book,” says Greg Darvon of Pristine Pools in East Hampton. A growing contingent of pool lovers is also looking at pools not just as an amenity for cooling off and relaxing, but also as an essential for the health, fitness, and well-being of adults and children alike. “The rectangle is very classic and still the most popular and functional shape,” says Darvon, noting that the clean configuration allows pool builders to “provide space for lounging and hanging out while still offering a lap lane or area for water aerobics.” Others see their pools as an aesthetic extension of the landscape—as well as a place to refresh and restore with spa-inspired extras. “Negative-edge pools that disappear into the landscape and custom veneer stonework on raised spas are two of the more popular trends,” says Chris Hall, a partner in
Pembrooke Fine Landscapes in Southampton. “Saltwater pools remain very popular, as they provide the practicality needed to properly maintain a luxury gunite swimming pool, while also creating what many believe is a more pleasing sensation.” Saltwater pools offer other plusses as well. “If treated properly, a saltwater pool should not have a brackish taste and provide a water that is softer and milder while being a cost-conscious alternative to traditional chlorine,” says Darvon, who adds that his firm has also seen an uptick in “requests for cold plunge pools alongside Jacuzzi tubs to create a spa-type environment.” Easy access to a grill and comfy seating are also in high demand among pool partiers, making accouterments that facilitate entertaining increasingly de rigueur, says Darvon, who has been asked to develop “finished rooftops where gardens, sitting areas, or barbecues are integrated into the architecture. In these cases, it’s not unusual to include a hot tub and/or water feature on the roof as well.” He adds that his customers “are taking a more holistic approach to their backyards and really going with an overall design

that incorporates patios, dining area, pool house, outdoor shower, and spa along with the pool,” ultimately making the pool the center of the action outdoors.
A LittLe Bit Country— Caroline irvin “The Hamptons is our happy place,” says interior designer Caroline Irvin, who shares her East Hampton home with her fiancé, Brody Davis. The farmhouseinspired abode has offered a welcome weekend respite from the hustle and bustle of city life and reminds them both of their childhoods in the country. “I was raised in Charleston, South Carolina, and he’s from a small town in Florida, so it gives us all the things we miss about where we grew up,” she says. “It’s a magical escape.” It also offers them an opportunity to meld their personal styles with their collective lifestyle. “He likes things clean and fresh and I tend toward traditional, so we designed the interiors in a way that’s classic and clean but also young and fresh,” says Irvin, who works during the week for the company Celerie Kemball and often draws upon her upbringing in her approach to design. Her stylistic point of view extends outdoors, where the gunite pool and the area surrounding it were designed to feel like an extension of the house. “We have family and friends here all the time,” she says. “It’s like a revolving door, and we like having casual yet elegant meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—by the water.”

Modern ClassiC—NiNa SariN Summer in the Hamptons has been a ritual for clothing designer Nina Sarin since she moved from her native San Francisco to New York at 22 (interrupted only by a brief stint in London). This year she and her husband, Joaquin Arias, are spending the season in Watermill, where they’ve rented a modernist home that complements the clean, classic point of view she has toward fashion. “The house has the same restrained minimalist lines we used with the brand,” says Sarin, who will launch her new Arias line with a capsule collection of 10 pieces in the Hamptons this July. The same is true for the pool in their Watermill home’s backyard, where Sarin and her husband like to lounge and entertain every chance they get. “It has a cascading waterfall at one end that seems to blend in with the grass or go off to infinity,” she says. It’s also the perfect spot for entertaining. “We love dinner parties, and we host parties for large crowds and also have intimate parties for family and friends here,” she says, noting that one friend brought the gift of a massive inflatable black swan that drifts atop the water and “makes the serious modern house fun.” An extra bonus: a spa tub in a corner of the pool. “Of course we spend a lot of time there,” Sarin says. “We’re all spa people and we love being in the water at the end of an active day playing tennis or spending time at the beach.”

His Hamptons connection deepened when the family opened the Palm in East Hampton in 1980. Since joining the family business full-time in 1994, Bozzi has been on the go around the country, helping the restaurant group expand to Miami, Boston, Atlanta, Houston, Las Vegas, and, most recently, Beverly Hills, where he keeps a second home (the other is in Manhattan). His upbeat attitude, high style, and appreciation for the good life go with him wherever he goes. And in summer—whether at his Hamptons home (now in Georgica) or in Beverly Hills—he and his family generally spend their downtime in the pool. “We’re pool people. Some people are ocean people, but we love a pool,” says Bozzi, who enjoys doing laps or lounging with his children in his long, minimalist slate-bottomed pool.

If you were to ask Father Alex Karloutsos how the construction and expansion of the beautiful Greek Orthodox Church complex in Southampton unfolded so seamlessly, he’d likely attribute it to divine intervention. “I think many of the elements were provided by God,” he says, noting in particular a pair of chandeliers (one that had hung in Tavern on the Green in Central Park and another that belonged to the actress Claudette Colbert), which were donated to the church by friends. A tour of the new church and cultural center lends weight to his claim, as the complex has emerged as a glorious communal gathering place for parishioners on the East End, including a growing contingent of converts to the Greek Orthodox faith. Yet many in the congregation would be just as inclined to credit Karloutsos himself for this particular miracle. Indeed, the graceful evolution of the church had much to do with Karloutsos’s ability to draw generous, hardworking people together and to raise funds, but he also has a knack for being in the right place at the right time (perhaps with some guidance from above). For example, a lunch meeting with Santiago Calatrava—the stellar Spanish architect who designed the winged transportation hub at the World Trade Center as well as Lower Manhattan’s St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox National Shrine, which replaces the Greek Orthodox church that was destroyed on 9/11— yielded advice that helped shape îî

the church’s master plan. “A sense of movement toward a greater revelation of truth evolved because of concepts he shared with me that day,” explains Karloutsos. “He said you need to create sacred space around the church, including the landscaping, so that as you move toward it, you understand that you’re moving toward something holy and extraordinary.” With those thoughts in mind, Karloutsos—along with his wife, Xanthi, and parishioner Greta Nikiteas, who served as chairs of the design committee—worked with architect Gil Lopez and other parishioners to design a new church and cultural spaces that would serve the growing congregation and the church’s expanding programming, including office, library, and lecture space, plus areas for the dance and food programs. Featuring high-quality limestone walls, marble floors, and mahogany doors, as well as handcrafted elements, such as mosaic murals by master Italian craftsman Sirio Tonelli and restored stained glass from the original church, the new complex has attracted positive attention from the local community, including golfers who appreciate its lovely profile from the nearby course. “It’s God’s home, but it’s also our home,” says Karloutsos, “and it brings our growing family together.”

MODERN LOVE THIS CONTEMPORARY HOME PROVIDES A HINT OF PROVENCE AT 289 PARSONAGE LANE IN SAGAPONACK.
The modernist Sagaponack home on two acres comes with top-flight finishes, a three-car garage, and Savant smart home systems. It also abuts a nature preserve, ensuring unobstructed views for years to come.
On a sunny late Saturday afternoon during Memorial Day weekend, a four-door black sedan rumbled up the lengthy gravel driveway of the flagship lot at 289 Parsonage Lane, and out stepped actress Drew Barrymore, wearing bell-bottom jeans and a peasant top by Soft. She was there to toast her cover story for Hamptons magazine, and hunky waiters stationed on the back lawn were pouring her Barrymore Pinot Noir rosé. “If you love Provence and rosé, this is a really beautiful California interpretation of that,” Barrymore offered before addressing the tony revelers by the pool from a sleek porch. The modernist home in the East Coast’s priciest zip code, according to Forbes, is built sturdy, like a stone, steel, and glass bunker with views that do indeed hint of the vistas of Provence. But this dreamy Sagaponack farmland, a mile from the sea, isn’t just any field. Truman Capote lived nearby, Jimmy Fallon recently bought in the area, and the Clintons have famously rented just down the road. “The house is on two acres facing west off of Parsonage Lane and abuts a 10-acre reserve, so that all the views are preserved in perpetuity,” says Cody Vichinsky of Bespoke Real Estate, who holds the exclusive on the property with his brother and business partner, Zach. Together, they founded the firm in 2014. A path to the ocean is deeded through the reserve. “It is an ultra-contemporary design and has a custom

65-foot vanishing-edge pool, room for a sunken tennis court, and a full outdoor summer kitchen with an infrared barbecue,” Vichinsky says. The house itself, approximately 11,665 square feet, was designed by Grade, New York, on three levels and was built by Jay Bialsky, the noted luxury developer. It has a state-of-the-art media room, breathtaking sunsets, and Dornbracht Lulu line fixtures. Bespoke specializes in homes that are fitted with top-flight finishes, as evidenced by walking through the property. “It has white super Italian marble throughout the kitchen, the island, the backsplash, and the floors in the bathroom,” Vichinsky points out. The master bath has a freestanding tub and a
three-generator steam shower with two rain heads, two showerheads, and two hand-helds. The temperature of the house, the music, lighting, and the pool temperature are controlled by Savant systems. There is a three-car detached garage, and the lower level is fully finished. The windows are by Panorama out of Portugal. The land reserve, 10 acres abutting the property, runs from Parsonage to Hedges, and while it would be available for equestrian facilities or farming, it is being offered separately— price available on request. The home and two acres are on the market for $23.5 million. Bespoke Real Estate, 903 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 500-9030; bespokerealestate.com

There seems to be some connection between the Hamptons and Palm Beach unlike other places in Florida. Why do you think that is? Jim McCann: I would certainly say that there is a strong connection between the markets. The Hamptons is an outlet for New Yorkers to have fun and relax in the summer months; Palm Beach is the same in the winter months. Campion Platt: Palm Beach is unique, perhaps even more unique than Southampton in terms of the zoning and how they want to preserve this city
112 hamptons-magazine.com
and what they want to see built here. Using the [Addison] Mizner house as an example, what I was so taken by in that house, which was built in the early 1920s, was how the zoning has changed so much to not allow so many great things that made great houses before. Are the Hamptons more accommodating because generally the sites and the properties are larger? Tim Davis: Because there was so much development outside of the villages, it caused building and zoning to think about the fact that this is how people want
to live, so we can’t be as restrictive in our villages if we want to keep business there, if we want to keep the property values there. Also, because of the amount of waterfront we have, that almost forces architecture to become more modern, more open, and more glass. CP: [In Palm Beach], I have recently seen some very modern houses. I am actually working on the interior of one, and it is a Brazilian architect for a client who had a traditional house on the water and wanted something entirely different and did a one-story 10,000-foot modern
house in steel and glass and stone. You wouldn’t think that with the conservative nature of Palm Beach those things would be here, but actually I think it is the illuminating nature of conscientious people to see that new things are built, and that not everything is a copy of something that was built before. Sara McCann: One of the things that makes the Hamptons and Palm Beach so magical is the historic preservation. You go from village to village and they each have their own character and personality—that is why different people are

drawn to different areas throughout Palm Beach and the Hamptons. JM: If Mizner were designing homes in Palm Beach today, he wouldn’t have the gorgeous 20-foot arch front door. They don’t allow third-story towers anymore. I understand there is a need for zoning codes, but a lot of times it can be overly restrictive. We see a younger clientele and a younger mindset that wants more modernistic homes. They have a heck of a time getting approval, but [those homes] are fantastic to see popping up on the island. CP: One of the interesting housing types in Palm Beach, the bungalow house, I find completely charming—you see them in the mid-block streets, 4,000 feet or less normally, usually two stories with a building in the back. In the Hamptons, there is much more speculative development, so the housing types are not generally as interesting. JM: Really the only way in Palm Beach that you are going to find a building site is by razing a structure that is currently on the site. TD: Because there has been more vacant land available in the Hamptons, it has allowed people to be more creative about their architecture. Some of the zoning in the villages has embraced it to a certain extent, but really it is outside of the villages where there is so much land that we have seen these homes be built. How does that translate to interior design and décor? SM: In Palm Beach, the community shifted. People are worried about their dogs, kids, visitors... It is still chic and a beautiful environment, but people want to live in their homes. They don’t want them to be just show places. îî hamptons-magazine.com 113

CP: Similar to the Hamptons, whether their house is classic or modern on the outside, most of the interiors are modern or tending towards modern. The other thing that I think is a struggle for a lot of the houses [in Palm Beach] is lack of closet space. You walk into houses that have zero closets in their bedrooms, and you have to figure out how to take more real estate out of the bedroom to make a closet. People are looking [to renovate] some of these older houses, and they are very challenged trying to get all of their young children and all of their items in the house because of the lack of storage.
114  hamptons-magazine.com
Because of the restrictive nature of building on the island, do you ever feel like you are losing buyers to other parts of Florida? JM: I think there is a bit of that. We are always going to be a sleepy town relative to Miami, but I know Joe Farrell, a big builder in the Hamptons, is building houses down in Manalapan and doing well. CP: If you ever go to St-Tropez in the summer, you can’t move in the traffic there. And on 27 in the Hamptons, it is terrible in the summer. Even in the winter [in Palm Beach], there is much less traffic. There is some work being done on the bridges now,
which will continue for a while, but otherwise it is no comparison. Why did you choose Palm Beach to raise your family? CP: We have three young children very close in age, so we wanted to get them all into the same school. As any parent knows, bringing children in New York to three different schools, with different times, you need an Excel spreadsheet to run your life. Here, I drive along the beach and look at the ocean driving my daughter to school. JM: A lot of us and our clientele are here because of lifestyle. There is a relaxed nature, and
then to live with the beauty that we have, and have that social connection with people that you enjoy, just makes all these places magical. SM: We have a 13-year-old daughter at Palm Beach Day Academy, which is a fabulous school. We are half a block from the bike trail that extends from south of the middle bridge all the way to the inlet. When my friends [up north] are taking their 20 minutes to get their kids dressed to go outside, or hop into a cab to go someplace, all we have to do is exit and go through the tennis courts. It is a beautiful lifestyle, a beautiful area to raise our family.

less is more landscape designer perry guillot uses an editor’s touch to make the most of a property’s longest view.
At an oceanside estate in Southampton with views north to Shinnecock Bay, the usual roadside role of privet hedges was reversed, with interior spaces delineated with sharp lines, while a softer outer frame of natural vegetation embraces and echoes the background view.
116 hamptons-magazine.com
“I think most Americans think of New York as nightlife, theater, and buildings, but not as having the most gorgeous and long beaches,” says Perry Guillot, a landscape architect based in Southampton, who envisions East End gardens as scenes embodying the tough, unadorned, but also unexpected spirit of the Hamptons.
Back in the mid-’80s, when Guillot first arrived in the Hamptons on a June evening, he was taken by the cool breeze and by seeing the Milky Way on full display against the vast dark sky. “That really surprised me, to experience this so close to the city,” he says. “So much of what I do, even today, plays on those first impressions.” For Guillot, a garden is
composed of plants, not hardscape. He creates sparse designs that may have as much apparent motion as beach dunes by using existing tall trees and shrubs to explore the longest views of a space. “I don’t believe in dividing a garden as green rooms,” he explains. “That only works with very small spaces.” He also upends classic landscaping principles, like planting hedges
around a house, instead keeping soft plantings outside that perimeter so they blend easily into coastal scrub. And when it comes to working on an old garden, he considers himself an editor. Says Guillot, “You subtract and add what you can to get you to the final scene.” 1865 North Sea Road, Southampton, 283-2839; perryguillotinc.com

Wells Fargo’s Christine Curiale Makes sense oF Mortgages For HaMptons HoMe Buyers. By Jeffrey slonim
How Wells Fargo avoided the national mortgage meltdown: “Wells Fargo did not at any time offer any amortizing, pay option, adjustable rate mortgages,” says Curiale. “We didn’t have an appetite for that. Wells Fargo has been around since 1852, working to satisfy our customers’ financial needs and helping them to succeed financially. We’re the only double-rated bank in the country, and in 2015, Barron’s listed us as number seven on the list of the most respected companies in the world.” How Curiale began her

career in mortgages: “I needed a way to pay for my books at Stony Brook College. I was working at a law firm in the morning and had school in the afternoon.” In 1994, she took a telemarketing job in the evening, calling anyone interested in refinancing. “This isn’t even done like that anymore,” she says. “There are laws against soliciting.” But Grumman, a major local employer, had recently pulled out of the area and 17,000 people were in foreclosure. “That first year, we saved 17 families. But we ended up developing a task force to save many homes from foreclosure. It was an amazing time, and I thought, This is what I want to be doing.” Her heady client list today: Everyone from the CEOs of hedge funds to actresses, writers, and local government officials. Charity involvement: Curiale is a cochair of the Parrish Art Museum’s Spring Fling. “It raises money to support our children’s programs year-round,” she says. “We offer local families outreach with art for children with disabilities and after-school activities for

Andrea Fornarola Hunsberger and her expert staff greet each student who files into the new East Hampton Barre, Dance HIIT and SUP studio. She and her instructors are friendly, accommodating and encouraging, creating an environment that is further enhanced by the new beautiful East Hampton studio. “I choose to bring Elements Fitness to the East End after many years of training clients privately in the Hamptons and seeing how much they embraced health and wellness while being out East,” says Hunsberger, Elements Fitness’ founder and director. The hour-long session features a series of choreographed moves that fuse ballet conditioning with yoga and the principles of muscle overload. Elements claims that its signature barre class will increase your metabolism, but as attendees quickly find out, it’s also a lot of fun. This summer, the studio also launched a pop-up at the historic Ram’s Head Inn on Shelter Island. The classes offered are Beach Barre Conditioning, Outdoor Dance Fusion, and Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Fitness, and all take place in the cool shade of Ram’s Head Inn’s beach side gazebo, which overlooks the picturesque Coecles Harbor. Says Hunsberger, “We have expanded our classes to include wellness activations in Montauk, Shelter Island and beyond to allow clients who are not in East Hampton to also experience our signa ture training style, class series, and experience driven approach.” 68 Newtown Lane, #6, East Hampton, 604-5445; elements fitnessstudio.com

THE GUIDE The Palm Since 1980, the 300-year-old Huntting Inn has been the East Hampton outpost of New York City’s historic Palm restaurant chain, and the dining experience here is nothing short of classic. The ItalianAmerican-inspired menu features traditional dishes like chicken parmigiana, but guests can also feast on an array of prime aged steaks and fresh seafood, such as the famous jumbo Nova Scotia lobsters. For summer, a new cocktail list includes drinks made with fresh fruit and other seasonal flavors. The massive portions leave everyone sated, including the famous names who stop by regularly. For a more exclusive feeling, try to snag a seat on the porch. 94 Main St., East Hampton, 324-0411; thepalm.com

GAIL ELLIOTT, SUPERMODEL TURNED FASHION DESIGNER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF LITTLE JOE WOMAN, SHARES HER PERFECT DAY IN THE HAMPTONS.
“I love waking up and taking a long beach walk. We shop for groceries at Round Swamp Farm (97 School St., Bridgehampton, 324-4438; roundswamp farm.com) and cook breakfast at the house. Next, my
husband will go for a surf, mostly to Georgica Beach in East Hampton, and I’ll check out the stores. One of my favorites is Knockout Beauty (2400 Montauk Hwy., Bridgehampton), which also happens to

carry my brand of Little Joe Woman slip dresses and every lotion and potion you could imagine… pure heaven! If I feel like some pampering, I’ll go to Hairspace at Gurney’s (290 Old Montauk Hwy., Montauk, 668-1754; hairspace.co) to have a styling session with Ric Pipino and afterwards a lunch at Hampton Chutney Co. (6 Amagansett Sq., Amagansett, 267-3131;
hamptonchutney.com). Back to the house for more relaxing and a chilled glass of Pinot Noir whilst watching the sun set and seeing the deer walk through the property. Finally, an early dinner at Nick & Toni’s (136 N. Main St., East Hampton, 324-3550; nickandtonis.com), which we’ve been visiting for 18 years and is one of my alltime favorite restaurants in the world.”
