LIVING THE LIFE “Montauk has a unique vibe to it that is not only special to Long Island but the entire East Coast,” says Coreyswave surf instructor Erik Schwab.

EBBS & FLOWS

“It’s different out here. The light is special and the energy is amazing. Montauk has a unique vibe to it that is not only special to Long Island but to the entire East Coast. “There is a surf culture in Montauk that is a

tight-knit group of people. We all come from different walks of life but share a bond when out in the water. Surfing is a big part of my life, and because of that these friends have become family. There is a comfort factor that we

all have, and there’s always a friendly face on the beach. “My love of surfing is why I started taking photos. I wanted to capture those moments on the water and put them in real form. Shooting a moment

that only happens for a couple of minutes is the ultimate experience for me. Each picture looks so different from the other. It’s alluring and keeps you coming back for more. “The ocean and surfing are my life. This is my

passion, my bread and butter. Whether I’m teaching in a classroom about the weather and waves, or I’m teaching someone to surf, I feel like I’m spreading a little magic and the joys of life on the coast.” 516-6394879; coreyswave.com

The exterior of the home defines its namesake style, combining white clapboard with cedar shake, clean lines and classical details such as bluestone patios and custom carriage doors, while the interiors, by Apotheke and RH Modern, exemplify vintage modern. Beyond the elegant covered front porch, the first level presents a double entry foyer leading into the vast and sunlit entertaining spaces and enveloped by multiple bluestone patios and spectacular views. The classical modernism of the home is amplified in the chef’s kitchen, where steel and lacquer are juxtaposed with warm walnut finishes and tile, resulting in an unparalleled crisp and clean warmth that carries throughout the home. As one may expect, the well appointed outdoor spaces have been professionally landscaped and include a large Gunite pool with bluestone patio, spa, pool house, outdoor cedar shower and outdoor entertaining area with full kitchen and stone fireplace. No detail has been overlooked and no expense has been spared in the masterful execution of this elegant home that is, unto itself, a rebirthing of Hamptons chic.

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF

It’s utterly impossible not to be smitten with cover stars Hannah Bronfman and her fiancé, Brendan Fallis. The two international DJs hop around the world—from France to the Hamptons—playing sets to a fashionable crowd, boast impressive modeling careers that include seemingly endless ad campaigns, have numerous projects away from the turntables, and are genuinely that fun-loving couple. And while they’re about to get caught up in the whirlwind of planning a wedding, summertime for them (as it is for all of us) is the opportunity to relax, recharge, and reinvigorate, and what better place to do that than the Hamptons? In this issue, the duo gives us an exclusive look at their life out East. This week’s issue also brims with previews and first looks and is filled with everything that we here at Hamptons magazine want to do right now—from shopping

Aquazzura’s new mega-gorgeous East Hampton boutique or stopping by La Ligne’s new Montauk outpost to diving into Bluemercury’s new East Hampton makeup mecca, catching Alex Guarnaschelli’s debut at Guild Hall, attending the premiere of Bridge Gardens’ Fridays at Four (with tastings and tours of the breathtaking gardens), and contemplating the work of Eric Fischl, Ross Bleckner, and David Salle at the Parrish Art Museum. We also give you a behind-thescenes look at 10 of the most magical millennials in the Hamptons, as we have no doubt you’ll want to know who the next East End influencers are. As you dive into the weekend, enjoy the issue and stay up to date with all of the people, parties, and restaurant happenings on the East End at Hamptons-Magazine.com. Be well, dress well.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

With my three wonderful and youthful children, Chelsea, Brittany, and Julian Dankner.

Youth and beauty go hand in hand, and that is why we have devoted this week’s issue to the exciting, gorgeous, and talented younger generation who are making their mark either through their breakthrough work or through the sheer beauty of youth. Why a takeover now? It’s something fresh and different—to peer into the future and see the next generation take its place. Not that we grown-ups are going anywhere soon, as our contemporaries are doing much in art, fashion, real estate, and other areas of commerce, but this new approach lets us think outside the box and create something new and exciting visually and in our content. We will be celebrating this issue with an event that speaks with the voice of the next generation. This weekend, on Saturday night, come see our two-time cover star Colin Jost, the talented Saturday Night Live “Weekend Update” anchor, perform at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts

Center. We will also celebrate the 19th edition of the ever-spectacular Super Saturday to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Another not-to-bemissed event of the season: celebrating with the talented avant-garde creative artists at the Watermill Center’s 23rd annual Summer Benefit & Auction. After a busy weekend of shopping and supporting our local organizations, don’t forget to watch a sunset, visit a farmstand, walk on the beach, or view our beautiful vistas of farms and bays and remember how fortunate we all are to spend time here in this very fun, beautiful, and dynamic community. I’ll see you on your travels or I’ll see you in town.

Doug Young is a photo editor and the principal photographer of the book Hamptons Gardens (Assouline), a contributor to Food & Wine magazine, and guest photo editor at Edible East End. Food was the focus for Young in this issue, as he shot the chic new Mediterranean-inspired restaurant Oreya.

Zev Starr-Tambor has photographed some of the world’s most noteworthy individuals, including Michelle Obama, Gisele Bündchen, and Ralph Lauren. See his photographs of the Hamptons’ best and brightest in “Creative Direction.”

What was it like to shoot Oreya in Southampton? Chef Greg Grossman plates food beautifully, and his Mediterranean approach to using local ingredients is visually inspiring. Where is your favorite place to shoot in the Hamptons? Lately, Quogue has been surprising me with its beautiful ocean and bay views along Dune Road—but Montauk will always be my favorite.

What was the best part about shooting the “Creative Direction” feature? There is a lot of incredible talent out here, and I enjoyed connecting to that energy. We are perhaps a little saltier than our city counterparts, but just as ambitious. And in this crew, everyone knows everyone. Feels like home! What was your inspiration? The sky, the sea, the plans and accomplishments of local youth, the black-andwhite spontaneous aesthetic of Elliott Erwitt (another local), and a quick snapshot of the roaring summer of our young Hamptonites!

What did you enjoy most about writing this story? I loved [director Michael] Arden’s plan to abandon microphones. Hearing the songs without any electronic mediation will be a delight. What are your plans for August? I’m heading out to the North Fork for a few weeks. I’m looking forward to making clam chowder with clams my friends and I harvest ourselves.

How would you describe Bronfman and Fallis? Hannah and Brendan are one of those beautiful couples that you want to hate because they’re so perfect, but they’re so down-to-earth and friendly you can’t help but love them. How do they embody the spirit of the Hamptons? Their laid-back nature and genuine romance with each other is the epitome of summer love.

By Tiffany frasier

For 150 years, artists have flocked to the East End, captivated by its ethereal light and exquisite landscape, so it’s appropriate that this summer’s social calendar has been packed with art-filled celebrations. The Parrish Art Museum hosted its highly anticipated annual Midsummer Party, with the Hamptons’ most notable residents and art-world luminaries, including Sandra Lee, Terrie Sultan, and Fred Seegal, assembling in the gallery space for an evening of merriment. Art aficionados also stepped out in support of the emerging and established artists who showed work at Art Southampton; Brooke Shields and Audrey Gruss joined in celebrating the weekendlong fair. Supporting the arts was also the theme of a Hamptons magazine soirée honoring the artist Michael Dweck at c/o The Maidstone in East Hampton.

The Hamptons’ most esteemed artists, collectors, and philanthropists descended upon the Parrish Art Museum to partake in its annual Midsummer Party. The museum’s Herzog & de Meuron-designed building in Water Mill welcomed more than 1,000 guests—including Chad Leat, Nicole Miller, and Andrea Grover—and raised over $1 million. Barbara J. Slifka was honored for her dedication to the arts, while Terrie Sultan, the museum’s director, thanked those in attendance for their support. Honorary cochairs Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola enjoyed cocktails with fellow revelers. At the intimate dinner, guests gathered on the Mildred C. Brinn Terrace, followed by a larger affair at the Parrish Contemporaries Circle afterparty.

A chef and two comedians walk into a theater… “I don’t think comedy is jokes; I think comedy comes in the truth,” says the chef Alex Guarnaschelli, who is best known for her work at NYC’s popular restaurant Butter, her Old-School Comfort Food cookbook, and her appearances on Chopped and Iron Chef. Now Guarnaschelli is appearing alongside veteran comics Judy Gold, Karen Bergreen, and Yamaneika Saunders at Guild Hall’s Carolines @ The Beach on August 5. “I realized in the past couple of years that the kitchen on any given evening during dinner service is really the same as an improv comedy show,” she says. Guarnaschelli has worked in such esteemed kitchens as Daniel, under Daniel Boulud, and the threeMichelin-star Guy Savoy in Paris, among others, before taking the helm of Butter. “There’s only one way to get through all that cooking and all that pressure, and îî

that’s really laughing about it a little bit to ease the tension,” she says. Her Guild Hall routine is called “Busting My Chops,” and she’s developing material with the “obvious pun” on pork chops or veal chops, coupled with actual comedy chops. “My brand of humor really comes from mixing together food and comedy,” she says. “Chefs are thought of as these unusual, kind of alien creatures—and we are—but the truth of the matter is there’s a universal funny in feeling like you’re not completely prepared for dinner service, or that you may have a great dinner service but your love life is in a complete shambles because you spent the last 10 days fileting fish and not socializing.” Also, this summer, Guarnaschelli will be joining other esteemed chefs such as Josh Capon, Tom Colicchio, and Christian Mir at the 12th annual Chefs Dinner to benefit the Hayground School and celebrate its 20th anniversary. Away from the kitchen or the comedy stage, the Manhattan native spent her childhood summers in Montauk, and now Guarnaschelli has a house in Bridgehampton. “Because the farmstand produce is so great, I actually cook and stay in a lot [in the Hamptons],” says the chef, who frequents Balsam and Pike Farms. “I cook for friends—it’s really recreational therapy for me.” When she does dine out, she prefers to keep it simple. “I just love going to get a slice at Conca D’Oro in Sag Harbor,” she says. “I go to Hampton Chutney, and I eat lentil soup and drink chai tea. I like the Beacon a lot—the basics.” Just don’t expect her to open her own restaurant out East. “The Hamptons is somewhere I go for recreation, and if I create work there, I’ll just go there and work,” Guarnaschelli says. “It’s actually more inspiration and recreation, and I’m working hard to keep it that way.” The Hayground School Chefs Dinner, July 31 at Hayground School, 151 Mitchell Lane, Bridgehampton; haygroundchefs dinner.org. little lady Bay Street theater concludes its 25th-anniversary season with an intimate production of My Fair Lady. By Suzanne Charlé

How best for Bay Street Theater to celebrate its 25th anniversary? With a revival of My Fair Lady, which is celebrating its 60th, of course. “This perfect musical felt like the perfect way to close our season,” says Bay Street’s artistic director, Scott Schwartz, who chose Michael Arden, a Tony Award nominee for directing the recent Broadway revival of Spring Awakening, to helm it. “I wanted a director who would… create a production that capitalizes on the intimacy of Bay Street’s

48  hamptons-magazine.com

theater and makes the show feel new for a new generation,” says Schwartz. According to Arden, they decided to “scale way back from the original My Fair Lady,” with its sumptuous costumes, elaborate sets, and large cast. Bay Street’s intimate staging is more akin to that of the play on which the musical is based, George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. Two pianos replace a full orchestra. “It really frees the actors,” says Arden. And for the 299-seat house, he has decided to “try something wild: We

won’t use body mics.” The focus will be on the actors’ unamplified voices and the marvelous Lerner and Loewe songs: “I want the audience to lean in.” But perhaps the biggest change is in the casting of Professor Higgins. In the show’s Broadway debut, Rex Harrison, who was closing in on 50, was very much the patrician father figure to 20-year-old Julie Andrews’s Eliza Doolittle. Instead, Arden has cast Paul Alexander Nolan (Once) as Higgins opposite Kelli Barrett as

Eliza. (The duo previously costarred on Broadway in Doctor Zhivago.) “They’re much closer in age, more sexual equals,” says Arden. “It creates an exciting dynamic.” And don’t expect any imitation of Harrison’s unique speak-sing style. “Nolan will be singing,” the director assures us. “The audience will actually hear the score—some for the first time!” My Fair Lady runs August 2–28 at Bay Street Theater, corner of Bay and Main Streets, Sag Harbor, 725-9500; baystreet.org

The Parrish art MuseuM’s exhibiTion “Unfinished bUsiness” offers a heaTed conversaTion among Three esTeemed local TalenTs. By Stephanie Murg

A Visit To/A Visit From, Eric Fischl, 1983.

50  hamptons-magazine.com

Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl, and David Salle were all students at the California Institute of the Arts at the same time, and each lives and works on the East End—in Springs, Sag Harbor, and East Hampton, respectively—but their connections go far deeper, and that’s the focus of a new exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum. “It’s complexity and physicality,” says curator David Pagel, describing the ties that bind the artists. “These are big, bold, dramatic, and powerful paintings. They grab your eyes in a nanosecond and then hold your attention. The longer you look, the more mystery you see.” Whether tending toward realism (Fischl), abstraction (Bleckner), or a postmodern synthesis of the two (Salle), the 23

large-scale canvases and 17 works on paper, all dating from the 1970s and ’80s, share a wonderfully elusive quality that led Pagel to title the show “Unfinished Business.” “I think that their works may have been interpreted somewhat simplistically back in the 1980s,” he says, “so I wanted to suggest that there’s more going on than often gets talked about. I’m interested in the messiness of these works, the loose ends, the rough edges, the ambivalence they trigger.” For the museum’s director, Terrie Sultan, the exhibit not only represents “another chapter in the generations of artists who came to the Hamptons in search of community and creativity,” but also advances the museum’s goal “of illuminating how profes-

sional and personal friendships play pivotal roles in artistic development.” The revelation of “Unfinished Business” comes in how the artists’ works speak to one another—and the conversation can get heated. Pagel, who spent more than two years organizing the show, promises that sparks will fly. “Each of these three artists builds that sort of conflict—that incoherence—into their individual pieces, so I think that will trigger all kinds of things to see and to think about.” “Unfinished Business: Paintings from the 1970s and 1980s by Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl, and David Salle” is on display from July 31 through October 16 at the Parrish Art Museum, 279 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 2832118; parrishart.org

savor local flavors and flowers at Bridge gardens’ friday at four tastings and tours. By Lindsey Grace

If you’ve never visited Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton, now is the time, as the Peconic Land Trust, the nonprofit organization that oversees the gardens, is sweetening the deal with Fridays at Four. On the last Friday of each month through September, visitors can join garden manager Rick Bogusch on a tour of the grounds while sipping local beverages. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to come and experience the garden in a casual, informal setting,” says Yvette DeBow, director of marketing and communications for the Peconic Land Trust. “It’s a feast for all the senses!” The tasting part of that feast comes courtesy of three local partners: July visitors will drink lemonade from Sweet’tauk Lemonade, the August tour features Wölffer Estate Vineyard rosé, and September offers beer from

Montauk Brewing Company. But while the drinks are great, the real treat is the garden. “Bridge Gardens is unique among local gardens,” says Bogusch. “[It’s] designed to be an outdoor classroom and demonstration garden with an emphasis on sustainability, vegetable gardening, and edible landscaping.” The tour allows Bogusch to discuss the plants in detail as well as give home gardening tips. “Rick is a wealth of knowledge,” says DeBow. “By combining these unique, personalized talks/walks with local tastings, our guests will experience a full array of the senses of our community—the tastes, the smells, the visuals, and the sounds. The gardens are a magical place.” Fridays at Four Tastings and Tours will be held on July 29, August 26, and September 30 at Bridge Gardens, 36 Mitchell Lane, Bridgehampton, 283-3195; peconiclandtrust.org

Olive and fig trees dot the seating area just outside an airy lounge filled with sea-foam-green banquettes and white wicker chairs. If you don’t already feel as if you’ve found a sliver of the Mediterranean in Southampton, the cuisine at the newly opened Oreya at the Capri Hotel will readily complete the illusion. Owner Greg Grossman, the 21-year-old culinary whiz who also runs the kitchen, sources his ingredients from local farmers and fishermen to shape a menu that includes highlights like espelette-cured hamachi carpaccio with pistachio purée, grapefruit, pickled Velvet Pioppini mushrooms, and herbs. Or there’s the signature plate of baby vegetable crudités “planted” in black sesame oil accompanied by white anchovy aioli and oregano green goddess dressing.

“I feel most restaurants that bill themselves as ‘Mediterranean’ use the term to refer to simple fare that is primarily French and Italian at heart,” says Grossman, a native Long Islander, “whereas we’ve incorporated heavy Greek, Turkish, Israeli, and Spanish elements into the mix.” His cuisine is accompanied by a seasonally inspired cocktail menu by Shannon Stiggins, whose drinks combine fruits and spirits popular on the French Riviera, such as a gin libation mixed with yellow Chartreuse, spiced honey, lemon, and hibiscus tea. “Our idea was to create a refined and delicious concept in a fun and exciting space,” Grossman says. “We’ve set out to define something special here.” Oreya Restaurant, 281 County Road 39A, Southampton, 500-9055; oreyahamptons.com

THE GOOD FARM DELIVERY COMBINES THE BENEFIT OF LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCE WITH THE CONVENIENCE OF DOOR-TO-DOOR SERVICE. BY CARRIE DOYLE

There is nothing more exciting than receiving a goodie bag of the freshest local fruits, vegetables, cheese, eggs, bread, flowers, and pantry items on a Friday afternoon. Not only does everything arrive clean, but the fact that you don’t have to slog through the busy weekend traffic roaming from farmstand to farmstand to obtain what you want is the cherry on top of the sundae. Now through Columbus Day, The Good Farm Delivery sources local farms and carefully curates seasonal items that it delivers to your doorstep. “The idea came out of a lot of different places,” says founder and owner Megan Schmidt. “I was friends with farmers who were really struggling, and then so many of our residents are seasonal and don’t have a lot of time to navigate and source local foods. I thought if I could connect the farmers and customers in an easy way, I wanted to take on that role.” Participating farms include Balsam, Iacono, Milk Pail, and Amber Waves, among others. Schmidt is careful to ensure that the quality of the produce she delivers is pristine. “I want it to be the best system that we can create together,” she says. “I am very close with these farmers. I know them, I know how they feel about food, and I know how they grow their food. It’s always a work in progress, but one that is working for everybody.” thegoodfarmdelivery.com

slice of life Following the opening oF her newest restaurant, prova at nYC’s pennsY, restaurateur Donatella arpaia turns her eYe For stYle towards entertaining out east. By Scott Feldman

Why did you pick the hospitality business? I literally grew up in the restaurant business. My crib was next to the dishwashing station of my dad’s first restaurant in Woodmere, Long Island— La Tavernetta. I also spent my summers in Italy on my mom’s farm surrounded by amazing cooks. Food was integral to our life. How does style play into your role as a restaurateur?

58  hamptons-magazine.com

I have distinct ideas and love the creative side of the business. I am intimately involved in all aspects, from designing the restaurant space to selection of utensils and plates to the entire branding package. I would classify my style as “rustic luxe,” and it informs all of my spaces. I am opening an upscale quick-service pizza concept in Grand Central Terminal next month, Prova Pizzabar, and I am finalizing all

design details as we speak! What is your best advice for hosting a stylish party? Be as authentic as possible, and invite a great group of people! Also, I love themed parties—they are really fun and a great way to personalize an event and let your style come through. If not cooking, what is your favorite summer activity? I just started doing paddleboard yoga—it’s so amazing—and I love

taking spin classes on my Peloton bike. What is your favorite summer ingredient? Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes… What do you expect, I’m Italian! Where is your favorite place to eat out East? My dear friends own the Capri Hotel in Southampton; they just opened a new spot called Oreya with a very young talented chef, Greg Grossman. I am loving the tuna tartare

cigars and Columbia River salmon crudo. What does the Hamptons mean to you? I remember my first summer share in the Hamptons; every time I visit friends, it takes me back to my youth. The Hamptons is a special place for us busy New Yorkers—it means we get to relax, play, and party a little. For the recipe for Donatella Arpaia’s turkey portobello umami burger, visit hamptons-magazine.com.

What is the inspiration for Colin Cowie Celebrations? Everything I do is to teach people how to live their best life possible and to celebrate life’s moments. What are your favorite types of events to organize? I like any event that involves beautiful

people, fabulous cocktails, delicious food, and groovy music. My biggest joy comes from giving, and I love that the majority of events that we do are happy occasions— weddings, celebrations of love. I love what I do, and feel blessed to do what I do, on the scale that I do, with the people I get to work with. At the

same time, my biggest joy and biggest reward comes from our philanthropic work. Favorite project in the Hamptons? A beautiful wedding at Wölffer Estate Vineyard last summer. What is your favorite thing about being out East? I think it’s one of the

most beautiful areas on the East Coast. For those of us who live in the city, we’re boxed in for eight months of the year. To spend time out here, breathing fresh air, where the farmland hits the ocean, is pretty cool and pretty unique. 256 W. 36th St., 4th Fl., NYC, 212-396-9007; colincowie.com

“Stripes allow for endless interpretation,” says Valerie Boster, who created La Ligne, a collection of graphic staples, alongside fellow former Vogue editor Meredith Melling and former Rag & Bone executive Molly Howard. La Ligne has had a fast and furious debut, with

devotees ranging from Bee Shaffer to Nell Diamond and Dianna Agron, and it’s easy to see why. The brand has been grounded in the simplicity, versatility, and graphicness of the stripe, on which an entire streamlined wardrobe can be built. “We think it’s important to own

pieces that help reduce closet clutter but not possibilities,” says Melling. “When we were designing the collection, we aimed to create pieces that can be worn multiple ways with items that may already be in your closet.” The brand’s shopin-shop, located îî

Master of Ceremonies EvEnt plannEr Bronson Van Wyc curatEs a list of thE ultimatE East End housEwarming gifts. By Christina Clemente

Bronson van Wyck is one busy man. As a cofounder of the environmental design and event production firm Van Wyck & Van Wyck, he has planned events for President Obama, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Beyoncé. Now he has added to his portfolio with the company Workshop. “It’s focused on the strategic goals of a brand as opposed to the hospitality goals

68  hamptons-magazine.com

of a private individual,” he says. “Brands are leaving money on the table if they don’t adapt their event and market strategies.” Van Wyck spends his downtime at his home on Big Fresh Pond—in style, of course. “I like high and low,” he says. “I like it in my work, and it certainly applies to how I dress.” A fan of T-shirts and linen, he heads to James Perse (56 Newtown

Lane, East Hampton, 9079270; jamesperse.com) and Henry Lehr (9 Main St., Southampton, 287-2971) for pieces by Greg Lauren. And van Wyck’s exquisite taste certainly shows in his gifts. He loves picture frames from Aerin (83 Main St., Southampton, 353-3773; aerin.com) and kitchenware from Loaves & Fishes Cookshop

(2266 Montauk Hwy., Bridgehampton, 537-6066; landfcookshop.com). But his go-to gift is a selection of bottles from his line of top-shelf cocktail mixers, Arrowhead Farms (Round Swamp Farm, 97 School St., Bridgehampton, 324-4438; roundswampfarm.com), especially the margarita flavors. “I think the best way to deal with heat is more heat—and tequila!”

The designers are finding success by offering clients fine jewelry they can feel good about: The pieces are designed and made in New York City, the gold is from Canada, and the diamonds are UN-certified non-blood diamonds. For each piece purchased, a book is donated to a high-performing charter school in Philadelphia. The direct model not only helps take out costs, it adds transparency, which is important for their rapidly growing client base, including stars like Jessica Alba and Megan Fox.

This summer, AUrate is hosting a pop-up in Southampton, where Hamptonites will be able to get an exclusive preview of the brand’s newest pearl collection alongside classics such as the flower collection (Ezzahraoui’s favorite) and the geometric square ring (Kahn’s choice). “We love the Hamptons,” Ezzahraoui says. “I actually organized Sophie’s bachelorette here. Morocco, Amsterdam, New York, and the Hamptons might seem like very different styles, but for AUrate designers Sophie Kahn and Bouchra Ezzahraoui, the locations have been pretty parallel. Their direct-to-consumer fine jewelry line has a global influence and appeal. “Living in different places and getting to know people with various backgrounds taught us to appreciate differences,” says Kahn. “It may have indirectly led us to the idea of AUrate, where we strive to break with traditions and offer jewelry in a new way.”

Almost three decades ago, Bobby Bock had an idea that would revolutionize the way Americans layered and wore sweaters. Today, his brand, 525 America, is one of the most recognizable knitwear companies in the country. Over the years, the brand, developed with his wife and president of 525 America, Marianne, has evolved—there’s now an entire cadre of layering pieces, ranging from ribbed lightweight tops to fun tie-dye cardigans. This season, 525 America is introducing core, year-round styles, because “the 525 customer has grown up with the brand and our DNA is established,” says Marianne. “It was time to expand with supporting items for [525 America’s signature] knitwear. The shirt has already proven to be a huge hit and very appropriate for resort areas, such as the Hamptons.” There will also be further additions in the ready-to-wear category, including jackets, ponchos, and dresses, and come fall/winter, an athleisure collection in French terry. “Athleisure is a great fit for the existing brand offering because it’s just a casual version of knitwear,” says Marianne. “It’s the alternative to jeans and a sweater.” Dee Jay’s, 11 Main St., Southampton, 283-4183; 525america.com

It’s a story that could only have happened in the Hamptons. Husband and wife Glenn and Sharyn Bradford, the owners of Glenn Bradford Fine Jewelry, met more than 20 years ago in a Hamptons share house. Since then, they’ve been delighting Long Islanders with their intricate,

thoughtful jewelry designs, first at their boutique in Port Washington and now also at their new location in Southampton. “Our shop’s aesthetic is unique to our brand,” says Sharyn, who designed the new jewel-box boutique. “My color-rich oversized canvases emanate a

positive energy into the space that fuels creativity, and semiprecious crystals are actually embedded into the walls of our Southampton shop to channel positive energy as well.” The boutique also offers vintage and estate pieces, including signed watches by Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Patek

Philippe, and Rolex, as well as the Bradfords’ ever-popular Buddha collection, which has garnered numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious JCK Jewelers’ Choice Award. “Ideally, your jewelry wardrobe should suit your life and style and be versatile by allowing you to

seamlessly transition from day to night,” says Glenn. “Jewelry at its best is an extension of who you are by carrying your past, present, and future in great, integrated design.” 10B Jobs Lane, Southampton, 400-9800; 279 Main St., Port Washington, 516-767-1600; glennbradford.com

Pantone’s annual announcement of its Color of the Year is always a much-anticipated event for everyone in the design world, whether their medium is fashion, interiors, or watches. “We’re actually retail therapists.” —shari kaynes

Shari and Larry Kaynes co-own the Hamptons highfashion mecca Shari’s Place.

photography by rick Wenner

It might be no surprise that Shari Kaynes, owner of Long Island’s Shari’s Place, studied psychology while at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “We’re actually retail therapists,” she says. “We listen to our clients’ wants and needs and have learned to adapt and offer an unmatched level of personal service.” Together, she and her husband, Larry, have been able to turn a singular shop into five locations, including a recently opened Greenwich, Connecticut, outpost. Larry oversees the financials and manages a buying team and production, which encompasses the Shari’s Place Private Label that has been an integral part of their brand since the beginning. Kaynes still works the floor: “Retail hours are the toughest part of my job,” she says. Recently, they introduced jewelry to their stores, and they “continue to shake up the designer market” with a mix of iconic brands like Sonia Rykiel, Nina Ricci, and Rochas alongside seasonal pieces and their signature leather and suede looks. Says Kaynes, “Our customer doesn’t enjoy spending multiple hours in a department store.” While co-owning a store with a spouse might be extremely stressful for some, the duo has been able to make it work for almost four decades, partly due to “respect, compromise, and a genuine appreciation for one another,” says Kaynes. “Working together as a couple can be challenging at times, but it makes for a successful and rewarding relationship.” 29 Main St., Southampton, 726-7200; 44 Glen Cove Road, Greenvale, 516-484-7400; sharisplace.com

Summer VE L V International DJs Hannah Bronfman and Brendan Fallis’s passion for music is matched only by their passion for each other. The soon-to-be-married pair talk about how they make time for one another, what they think about being called a power couple, and how the Hamptons offers a respite from their busy schedules. by JORDI LIPPE-MCGRAW

photography by MELANIE ACEVEDO

IT’S HARD TO KNOW JUST where in the world Hannah Bronfman, 28, and her fiancé, Brendan Fallis, 36, might be calling from. “We’re in Muskoka Lake, Ontario, but we were in Cannes, France, yesterday,” says Fallis. Adds Bronfman, “We’re only in New York for one day this week, and then we go straight out to the Hamptons, and then I go from the Hamptons back to France.” No, this isn’t a perpetual vacation; rather, the world is their office. As successful international DJs, the two, who were engaged last August, travel half the year, spinning at a variety of high-profile affairs, like VH1’s Save the Music charity party last year in Sagaponack and the recent Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic at New Jersey’s Liberty State Park, and regularly adding their musical flair to fashion industry events. The world may think of Bronfman and Fallis as an unstoppable team, but it’s their individual endeavors that helped solidify their relationship. “When I first started dating Brendan, I told him the concept of my first start-up, and he thought it was a genius idea and he connected me with a few of his friends,” says Bronfman. “One of them became my cofounder. And I’ve definitely helped him expand into different fields he might not even have thought he was passionate about or even thought there was a business opportunity there.” That mutual encouragement has turned Bronfman and Fallis into genuine multihyphenates. A New York native, Bronfman is also a model and the face of several global ad campaigns, a health guru with an impressive social-media following, the host of an online show for PopSugar, and a cocreator of the app Beautified, which allows users to book last-minute beauty and wellness appointments. Fallis’s résumé is just as impressive. The Canadian is also a highly sought-after model for brands like Banana Republic and Revlon, and he gained worldwide attention when he created the track “Day and All Night” (with vocals by Kate Moss) for Stuart Weitzman’s Fall 2013 campaign. He also boasts two tracks that made the top 50 on Hype Machine’s Most Popular Remixes chart. Although their careers may take them across the globe, the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs. consider the Hamptons their relaxing home base. Fallis and Bronfman spoke exclusively with Hamptons about their collaborative process, their fondness for the East End, and how they make it all work (hint: Google Calendar).

“We’re definitely not the type of people Who live completely separate lives and We’re just coming together for dinner every night.” —hannah bronfman hamptons-magazine.com  91

How do you make time for each other with such hectic schedules? Hannah Bronfman: We share a calendar, which makes it so easy. If we’re going to make plans with friends to have dinner, I don’t need to hit him up to see if we can make it work. I can just look at our calendar. It’s just about communication. Brendan Fallis: We barely see each other at home in New York, so our travel time is really our time to bond. It seems like you guys get to work together often. BF: We do as much as we can. We enjoy each other as friends and enjoy our time together a lot. It’s the saving grace of our relationship. We can go to the same festivals, whether it’s SXSW or Coachella. Our relationship could be really tough if we were constantly going to opposite places in the world. We’ve been super fortunate this year, being able to go to the same places. We don’t deejay together a ton, but we’ve had the privilege this year of doing two photo shoots

together, including this one, which has been great. You’re both DJs and very creative. Do you collaborate together much? HB: There are so many inspiring couples that work together and work really hard. We’re definitely not the type of people who live completely separate lives and we’re just coming together for dinner every night. We want to have that work/life relationship. I think we’re really in growth mode right now and we’re still really trying to build our careers and also build for the future. BF: Exactly. While we’re focused on our separate brands, we’re also talking about what we can create together. What do you think when people refer to you as a power couple? BF: It’s obviously a compliment. People think we’re doing cool things, and we’re super fortunate to be in this position, and have worked hard to get here at the same time. HB: It’s also really inspiring for us. When people say that about us, we’re like, “Uh…” We definitely think that there are way more ways for us to be killing it. So it is motivating for us to have that. Hannah, since you grew up in New York, did you spend a lot of time in the Hamptons? HB: I kind of pride myself on being a native New Yorker, and I had the luxury of being able to go out to the Hamptons throughout my upbringing. It’s really nice to be able to share that with Brendan.

BF: Moving to New York from Canada, I’d take the train out East not knowing anything and just crash at somebody’s rental house. So for me, the Hamptons has really changed because of having Hannah. It’s nice to meet her community and get an insider’s look. It’s become more of a special place to me. HB: Not only is he not a New Yorker, but he’s not from the States, so it’s really nice to be able to share each other’s places that mean so much to us. Actually, at our engagement party, we had coasters made that had hamptons on one side and muskoka [where Brendan’s family vacations] on the other. Speaking of engagements, what are you most looking forward to about getting married? BF: We’re excited for all the things that we don’t even know are going to happen. I really enjoy getting through all the ups and downs. HB: I think we’re also really excited to start a family together. Do you think you’ll pass on the tradition of going to the Hamptons to your kids? HB: Yes, absolutely, we would love to be able to do that. BF: We were talking about that today. We’d love to introduce our kids to the Hamptons and Muskoka, where I grew up. HB: Having our children experience both sides is going to be a huge thing for us, especially because we’re both very family-oriented people. We’re just looking forward to building a future together.

T i Ta n s ! Enterprising bloggers are stealing the scene this season with snaps that mean serious business. by Jeffrey slonim

EvEryonE knows that thE hamptons is home to hedge fund founders, billionaires, media moguls, and movie stars, but on the rise are a bumper crop of Instagram aficionados and social media stars. With their elegantly composed daily postings, they capture the beauty of the local food, cocktails, flowers, and fashions on Instagram, Snapchat, and other popular feeds. While the rest of us get the occasional “like” from relatives and old friends, their poppy images are liked and followed by thousands and, in some cases, hundreds of thousands around the globe. Hamptons asked some of the most touted local Instagram stars to curate a week on the East End, and the dramatic images here are a testament to their eye for what attracts us all to the area. Now, pick up your iPhone and get snapping. #jealous Gray malin | PhotograPher @graymalin

Gray Malin, whose quirky, large-format art photographs exclusively hang in the rooms at The Surf Lodge, fell in love with photography after taking a darkroom course while in high school in Dallas. Now he’s putting his double major in photography and marketing from Emerson to good use, and the result is a campy-delightful photographer who knows how to get his vision across to a broad audience. Malin recently created a swan pool float that was featured in a viral Rihanna video and published Beaches, a coffee-table tome of his aerial photos of dreamy beaches and landscapes, including in the Hamptons.

clockwise from top left, opposite page: Photographer Gray Malin’s recent Hamptons Instagram postings included these shots of The Surf Lodge, Montauk Point Beach (from his book, Beaches), tucked in under his I Am Busy Balloons photograph on display in one of Surf Lodge’s rooms, opening rosé at Sunset Beach, and a pool in Southampton.

Local flavor: “I was eating an ice cream cone with sprinkles on Main Street in Southampton. I took an image of my hand holding the ice cream cone with the ambience of Main Street as the backdrop.” Must-snap Montauk: “Gurney’s Hotel and Beach Club—the yellow- and white-striped umbrellas and cabanas. The Surf Lodge is its own world. At night, there is certainly a scene, but during the day, there are only 21 rooms. It’s quite selective, and the service is really great.” Instagram insight: “It is important to present things that people can relate to. The more relatable, the more people feel included. I am leaving for Italy today, and whether I’ve got a gelato in my hand or a map, I’ll just snap natural moments. The key with Instagram is to be authentic.” Props that get props: “Last summer, I chartered a boat and I was opening a bottle of rosé, and the pink bottle against the green ombré colors of the water--people loved that.” The Surf Lodge, 183 Edgemere St., Montauk, 483-5037; graymalin.com

Arielle NAchmANi chArNAs | Blogger @somethingnavy

Raised in a fashion family, Arielle Nachmani Charnas—her dad built and sold the company Coolwear, which manufactured trendy clothing for department stores, and her sister is celebrity stylist Danielle Nachmani—started her blog Something Navy by Arielle seven years ago because of a breakup. “The guy I was dating was pushing me to find my passion, and my older sister suggested I start posting what I wear,” says Charnas. “After a few months, my interest in the guy faded, and I fell in love with what I was doing.” Her wildly successful Instagram account followed four years ago, and now “we get over a million views per week,” she says, “and every year, it just keeps rising.” Blogger’s closet: “It’s a full bedroom; I always need content. Influencers have much more of an effect on girls’ shopping than celebrities do. If real-life bloggers wear the items, it’s more believable and relatable. I collaborate with clothing companies, beauty brands, and hair brands. I’m a part of a fitness company called Bandier. Whenever I wear any of their leggings or sports bras, they sell out in a matter of minutes. But I never work with brands I don’t generally use or believe in.” Hamptons presence: “My parents have a house on Meadow Lane in Southampton, and this summer, I’m renting a house of my own, because we have a newborn [Ruby].” Favorite backdrop: “I love to take photos at the beach, because the light is great. And the house that I’m renting has so much greenery, a beautiful pool, and flowers. Montauk, Gurney’s, and Surf Lodge are also beautiful backdrops.” Tough part of the job: “Being dressed and on 24-7, but it’s an incredible business doing what I love.”

Julie Resnick | The Feed @thefeedfeed

Julie Resnick, cocreator of the crowdsourced but curated Instagram account @thefeedfeed, always inhabited what she refers to as “the digital space,” building websites and social media campaigns for big brands, first at an ad agency and later at her own boutique digital agency. She has also studied at the Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan. Her husband and cofounder, Dan, is a radiologist, but when the couple moved to the Hamptons and had their third child, they decided to change the way they ate. “We belong to two CSA [Community Supported Agriculture] or farm shares,” says Resnick. “You buy into a farm and get back whatever they produce, so I basically need more inspiration for what to cook. On Instagram, I was able to hook up with people just by looking at a picture. Our brand idea for the business was to just allow people to connect with other people of similar interests and cooking styles. We asked everyone to tag what they cooked with our hashtag, #feedfeed. If you add the hashtag, it gets shared out to all these other people who follow the hashtag.” Spinoffs: @thefeedfeed.vegan, @thefeedfeed.cocktails, @thefeedfeed.glutenfree, and @thefeedfeed.chocolate.

clockwise from top right, @thefeedfeed posted this shot of Love Fruit and Nut Butter Toast by @myberryforest; the most popular cocktail pic of 2016 so far has been the Strawberry Chamomile Paloma by @halfbakedharvest; Ratatouille’s Ratatouille photo by @conscious_cooking.

Local favorite: Almond. “We don’t usually share photos from restaurants, but Jason [Weiner], the chef, makes interesting and creative dishes with local ingredients.” Hamptons activities: “We live on Napeague Harbor and like to swim across it. We also like taking a boat and hiking through the walking dunes. We have oysters and clams right in front of our house.” Local involvement: The Resnicks are on the board of directors of Quail Hill and Amber Waves farms. Sweet sips: Channing Daughters for wine, The Maidstone inn for a light drink or bite, and Jack’s for coffee. Viral post: S’mores pudding cake.

Steinthal. “We were taking artists out all the time.” And as friends came to them and asked where to take their parents, bring a date, or go to find hot girls, they decided to create a trusted resource. Under the umbrella of The Infatuation, they now have 18 popular Instagram accounts with over 1.5 million followers, including @burger, @icecream, @tacos, @pasta, @avocadotoast, and local accounts in nine markets. Winning Instagram shot: “A lot of lobster rolls in one picture does really well. That’s a thing.” From where? “I’m a die-hard Lunch lobster roll champion. They have even put my quote about them on the placemat.” Picturesque drink: “I’m a fan of sunset cocktails at Bay Kitchen Bar. There are not a lot of restaurants on the water with a view in the Hamptons. And they have a great setup overlooking the bay. They have a spicy version of the margarita.” Best margarita: “I’m a big fan of The Hideaway in Montauk. It’s a dive-y Mexican restaurant with a tremendous margarita.” Best beers: “Montauk Brewing Company. It’s a cool outdoor hang.” Internet paradox: “The more ridiculous-looking stuff does well, but we try and focus on things we want to eat, not promote crazy-looking french fries or oozing cookie dough that doesn’t taste good.” Instagram insight: “Communicate your agenda, as opposed to just putting up pictures.”

Andrew SteinthAl | The InfaTuaTIon @infatuation

“The Infatuation is a Zagat guide for the social media generation,” says cofounder Andrew Steinthal. “We’re like the friend you turn to that knows all the restaurant intel.” The Instagram account is the companion to the events and stories on their website; for example, if they have a Best Restaurants of the Hamptons feature, they’ll run two days of Hamptons-specific photos. “We have a website, an app, a messaging service, and text [recommendations],” says Steinthal. “Text us and someone will get back to you immediately with a recommendation.” Good friends who met in college, Steinthal and his business partner, Chris Stang, started in PR, Steinthal as the VP of PR at Warner Brothers and Stang as VP of marketing at Atlantic Records. “We both liked going out to eat, and we’re very opinionated,” says

Keith Pierpont, a descendant of Yale University founder James Pierpont, owns and operates Pierpont’s Blossom Farm in Baiting Hollow on the North Fork. His life and business partner, Anastasia Casale, is also an artist with flowers and the proprietor behind Sag Harbor Florist. A romantic at heart, her Instagram account blooms with images of her arrangements for weddings, galas, and private dinners. Naturally, all of Casale’s local flowers come from Pierpont’s 13-acre farm that features French lilacs, Viburnum opulus (green snowball), peonies, hydrangea (purples, blues, and

the green Annabelle hydrangea, limelight hydrangea, and Tardiva hydrangea), dahlias, cosmos, snapdragons, special zinnias, and lycanthus. Clientele: “We do a lot of vineyard weddings and weddings at clubs and private estates, Chefs & Champagne, Paddle & Party for Pink,” says Casale, whose private clients include “musicians, actors, models, and, of course, a daytime talk-show host.” Most Liked: ac: “When [a well-known chef] who follows me Instagrams my flowers.” kp: “I put one of my Café au Lait dahlias on the barn door, and that had a crazy following.” Most frequent comment: kp: “That people would love to visit the farm.” Key to their Instagram success: “The prettier those flowers look, the better they perform,” says Gabrielle Bradford, who helps Pierpont with his social media. “Pink peonies are a no-brainer. And Keith has a very good handle on the Hamptons aesthetic. He really understands his customer.” Sag Harbor Florist, 3 Bay St., Sag Harbor, 725-1400; sagharborflorist.net

BRIAN POLLAK, 24 For Brian Pollak, surfing is more than just a pastime—it’s a tribute to his older brother, Jason, an avid surfer who was killed in a car crash two years ago. “When I surf, I think he’s watching me,” says Pollak. “I want to make him proud.” It’s hard not to be proud of his surfing ability. Pollak started surfing at age 7, was a New York State champion at age 14, and rode the expert-caliber waves at Oahu’s Banzai Pipeline while studying at the University of Hawaii. Although these days he’s got a day job—handling sales for Hapco Farms, a produce company based in Riverhead—he’s still a competitive surfer. Pollak grew up and still lives in Water Mill, and his board can usually be found at Flying Point Beach, where he learned to surf, even when it’s anything but warm and sunny outside. “After snowstorms the waves get good, so I usually surf in the snow,” he says. “You have most of the good waves in the wintertime, and no one’s around, so you can have all the waves to yourself.”

JACKIE MCKAY, 27

Makeup By Courtney BreitenBaCh of Duke & Darling

Private chef Jackie McKay has already spent decades focused on cooking. “I didn’t watch cartoons [as a kid]—I watched the Food Network,” says McKay. “I was really obsessed, and always have been.” Growing up in North Sea surrounded by a family that loved to cook, she was exposed to her mother’s Sunday meals inspired by her roots in Sicily and Germany and dishes influenced by her dad’s Southern heritage. By her freshman year of high school, McKay was assisting a private chef, then gradually began taking on her own clients. Then after studying cooking in Italy, she returned home 50 pounds heavier. While prepping healthy meals for two client families, McKay ate similarly and the weight quickly came off. Now, her niche has become preparing delicious, healthy food for people with restricted diets, like vegans and individuals who are dairy- or gluten-free, or those who are simply eager to eat cleanly. “I get hugs and kisses, and can hear the foodgasms going through the whole night,” she says, “and there’s really no better feeling in the world as far as I’m concerned.” McKay Kitchens, http://www.mckaykitchens.com/, 488-7244

DOUGLAS DE MELO, 24 Although Douglas De Melo is training to be a world-class polo player, he’s only been riding since January, when a visit to Brazil led him to take classes at Barra da Tijuca, the school that will host the polo matches at this year’s Olympics. “From the first day, I was hooked,” he says. “It was one of those weird moments in your life where everything clicks. I knew I would be doing this for the rest of my life.” The trip to Brazil was initially intended as a way to connect to his roots; De Melo’s mother is Brazilian, and he was born in the town of Belo Horizonte before he moved with his family to Southampton when he was 3. “I went to polo matches, but it was more for the free bar, not really paying attention to the game,” he recalls. “I always had this notion that polo was something I could never do because it seems like something that’s so hard.” So far, that preconception has been wrong, and De Melo is excelling, training this summer at Gray Horse Farms in Water Mill, with plans to continue those studies in Argentina in the winter. Simultaneously, De Melo is the head of strategy and marketing at Doña Sarita, a mezcal company, and is working this summer in the reservations department at the Montauk Yacht Club. Growing up in the Hamptons, says De Melo, has given him a particularly solid network of support as he pursues his passion. “Every time a friend comes to visit, they’re like, ‘You’re so lucky to have such a close-knit group of friends,’” he says. “I think that’s unique to growing up out here because we did everything together.”

GRACE GILL, 21 Although she’s spent the bulk of the last few years in Connecticut as a student at Trinity College, Grace Gill is proud of her Sagaponack roots. “I think it’s really exciting to have everyone come out and to make it a little more fun,” she says of summers in the East End. “At the end of the day, the Hamptons is my community—it’s my home. It’s such a special, peaceful, beautiful place.” This summer, she’s working in the customer experience department of the helicopter company Blade and writing about Hamptons happenings for the website Guest of a Guest. Previously, she’s spent summers working at Ralph Lauren, for which her mother, Jane Gill, modeled for many years. As she’s entering her senior year and gearing up to graduate with a degree in ancient Greek and sociology, she’s beginning to plan what’s next. “I’m fascinated by the law,” she says. “I don’t know if I want to go into practicing, but having that foundation and having a greater knowledge and understanding of it is something that I see for myself, so that’s definitely in the cards.”

GREG GROSSMAN, 21 Greg Grossman has a decidedly clear vision of what he wants Oreya, the new Southampton restaurant he recently cofounded, to be. “We’re going to create an ambience where people come for the food and beverage and stay for the experience,” he says. That ambience includes poolside dining, with a live saxophonist performing during part of each evening’s dinner service; the menu is inspired by the cuisines you’d expect to find in Mykonos or St-Tropez. “We’re looking to redefine what people commonly construe as Mediterranean dining,” he says. “It’s really a mélange of clean, simple ingredients and flavors.” Focusing on food is nothing new for Grossman, who cofounded the New York City delivery service Kettlebell Kitchen a few years ago. He grew up in the Hamptons but moved to NYC as a teenager, graduating from Professional Children’s School. Now he’s thinking beyond the East End limits with Oreya: “We’re looking to turn it into a brand,” he says confidently. Oreya Restaurant, 281 County Road 39A, Southampton, 5009055; oreyahamptons.com

JULIET GARRETT, 21 Juliet Garrett’s mother, Margaret Garrett, is an abstract painter, and her father, Bruce Wolosoff, is a composer, so it’s no surprise that she, too, chose a creative path. “I grew up surrounded by music,” says the Psychobaby singer of her Shelter Island upbringing. “I’ve played piano since I was tiny; I started writing songs when I was 12. I’ve loved music since I was a little kid.” Her current band—which sounds a bit like a slightly less edgy PJ Harvey, with shades of everyone from the Buzzcocks to Sonic Youth—is the culmination of that lifelong love. She’s been performing professionally since she was 16, starting with local open mic nights. Although she majored in philosophy at Princeton University, music remained a focus. Says Garrett, “In college, I just found that that’s what I was spending all my time doing, so it seemed like the logical thing to do after I graduated.” These days, she splits her time between her home in Bushwick and her parents’ house in Shelter Island. “It’s a great balance between the grittiness and the beauty,” she says of the two locales. “It’s amazing how much more beautiful Shelter Island seems when you return to it.” psychobabymusic.com

TUCKER WUDYKA, 23

Although he’s only 23, Tucker Wudyka has been based in America’s three best beach communities: South Florida (where he is transferring to study finance at the University of Miami), Southern California (SBCC in Santa Barbara), and the Hamptons, where he grew up and graduated from Southampton High School. “I am a big fan of the beach, the sun, and good weather,” he says. “People think that since I have long hair that I’m a surfer, but I am not—I’m the one hanging out on the beach keeping everyone having a good time.” Nonetheless, Wudyka does much more than just sit on the sand. This summer, he’s been managing Elm and Main, after a couple of summers of club promoting. “It’s been a great bump in responsibility, but I’ve always enjoyed a good challenge,” he says. “If you’re not challenging yourself, you’re wasting your time.” Wudyka is about to enter his senior year of college and is beginning to think of what he’ll do after graduation. “I don’t mind wearing a suit, but I do not like being confined to a cubicle,” he explains. “My skill set is much stronger when I’m out and moving around and active instead of sitting behind a computer screen all day. I don’t know exactly where my future leads me, but something will stick soon enough.”

SARAH MOLISKI, 24 “If I see someone I know from the Hamptons, it just feels like a family,” says actor/comedian Sarah Moliski, who recently relocated to Los Angeles for her career. “You have that strong foundation together.” For Moliski, some of those connections were forged at Stages, A Children’s Theater Workshop, where she studied and performed for many years. “It was the most important thing in my life growing up,” she recalls. “It instilled so much in me as a young actor, which I still use to this day.” After graduating from East Hampton High School, Moliski studied film, media, and theater at Hunter College. These days, she acts (including a starring role in the upcoming independent film Out of State: A Gothic Romance), is the host of a television show on Viceland, appears regularly on a Japanese talk show, and has performed standup comedy in venues like the Comedy Cellar, Broadway Comedy Club, and the Upright Citizens Brigade. “I was always the class clown and outgoing,” she says. “I actually got voted class clown in our [East Hampton High School] yearbook. It’s 100 percent accurate for me.”

NEW LIFE REMIXED INTERIORS IN A CENTURY-OLD FAMILY HOME INFUSE IT WITH FRESH ENERGY FOR A NEW GENERATION. BY JEAN NAYAR PHOTOGRAPHY BY COSTAS PICADAS

Perched atop a rolling hill in Shelter Island overlooking Dering Harbor, the expansive Georgian Colonial home Margarita Benacerraf shares with her husband, Ari, two teenage sons, Michael and James, and their German shepherd, Chester, brims with happy memories. Built in 1917, the character-filled house has been in her husband’s family for generations and came with a rich mix of antiques when the couple purchased it not long after her husband’s parents passed away. So Margarita, an interior designer based in Manhattan, took great care to preserve the history, integrity, and details of the house when she set about updating it for summer living with her family. Working with Carolina Figueredo, who until recently had been Benacerraf’s partner in Galban Interiors, the duo started by gutting the bathrooms and kitchen and reworking them with classic fixtures, fittings, and cabinetry. They then painted the shell of the 6,000-square-foot house with a soothing, beach-inspired palette of soft grays, tawny beiges, and faded blues. “I didn’t want to take away from the water views, so we kept to light, airy hues,” says îî

Following her mother’s retirement nearly 20 years ago, Debra Gildersleeve and her husband, Bill, took over the family business, Renee’s, transforming it from a women’s clothing store into one of the largest home décor retailers on the North Fork. “We kind of got into the [home decorating] business by accident because we wound up carrying furniture to display the clothing and the jewelry, and then people ended up wanting to buy it,” Gildersleeve explains. “Now we’re literally 80 to 90 percent home furnishings.” Located in Mattituck, Renee’s offers an extensive collection of beachy, modern, and industrialstyle pieces from more than 200 vendors, as well as comprehensive design services. As owner, buyer, and designer, Gildersleeve

is constantly working with clients to create unique, personalized spaces. “I always love adding the accessories—the color, the rugs, the pillows, the artwork, the lighting,” she says, “because to me that’s what brings a room to life and makes it cozy and personalizes it.” Although Gildersleeve is the sole designer and buyer at Renee’s, she gets help from her family in other areas of the business. Bill is part owner, while their son, Will, works in the store and their daughter Morgan does the branding and photography, which features their older daughter, Taylor, as a model. “It really is a family affair,” Gildersleeve says. “One of us will always be involved in whatever is happening.” 10095 Main Road, Mattituck, 298-4223; reneesmattituck.com

HIDDEN TREASURE THE EXTERIOR OF THIS SAG HARBOR HOME MAY LOOK ROOTED IN THE PAST, BUT INSIDE ARE SOME DECIDEDLY 21ST-CENTURY AMENITIES.

If Agent 007 were searching for an appropriate US domicile, the home at 43 Suffolk Street in Sag Harbor might just fit the bill. He could slide his tricked-out Aston Martin DB10 into the garage, push a button, and have it descend into the basement for safekeeping, yet Mr. Bond could still admire it through a glass wall that divides the garage from a lounge and wine room. “The house is completely smart-wired,” says Brown Harris Stevens agent Mark J. Baron, who is listing the property with Christopher Burnside for $12 million. “An app, all done by Telstar, sends push notifications to the alarm company and turns on the lights, fireplaces, and music.” Although the structure looks as if it has always been there, the lot, just shy of half an acre on a premier street in the village, previously contained a ranch house. “It’s new construction, but the exterior is an understated 18th-century shell,” says Baron, “and it has a 7,000-square-foot modern interior with both scale and grandeur. It’s on three levels with 10-foot ceilings throughout. space REAL ESTATE ROUNDTABLE East Hampton’s 75 Toilsome Lane (listed by Sarah Minardi) was designed to resemble a classic shingled summer cottage, but with all the modern amenities.

When creating a hamptons dream home, is it better to renovate an existing property or tear it doWn and start aneW? a panel of east end brokers, builders, and designers discusses the options. Moderated by Michael braverMan

Our subject is “build or renovate,” but since there are so few vacant lots these days, I’d say it’s “tear down and build or renovate.” Am I correct in that? Sarah Minardi: It’s very correct. Because there are so few pieces of vacant land, and people are really specific about looking for a certain location, they’re more apt to find a home that they don’t necessarily want and tear that down and build new. I have a project in the Amagansett Dunes where it was an old cottage on about a third of an acre, and the person who bought it said, “I’m just going to start new.” It took almost 18 months for him to get all the permits before he could even demolish the house, so you should be ready for the time that it takes to get to that point. Christine Curiale: We’re seeing a lot of people who are looking to either renovate their home to sell it for a higher value, or they can’t find what they’re really looking for in their price point. We’re probably seeing about a 25 percent increase in people looking for renovation money.

120  hamptons-magazine.com

Pamela Muller: We find that the majority of our tenants are longtime residents of the Hamptons and choose to renovate rather than build because of their prime locations. [My company] NouvelleView not only provides a temporary relocation moving service but often holds moving sales for existing furnishings, so they can have a fresh start when they return. Cody Vichinsky: Teardown is actually not a bad thing in the eyes of a sophisticated buyer, particularly when you get towards the higher end of the market. It’s an asset, and [homeowners] can borrow against it much easier. There’s rentability in a lot of them. A piece of land is hard to really take advantage of while in the interim process of building a new house. What type of guidance do customers look for in deciding? Paul Masi: Most of our clients tell us that for homes built in the ’70s or ’80s, the value of construction was commensurate with the value of the land. Now the values of the land are so high that the homes built there

don’t support their lifestyle, so they ultimately take down the house to build something for them. There are exceptions. You can identify whether it’s of historical significance, a lot of homes that are on the beach don’t meet the separation requirements—there are a lot of different factors to think about. Christopher Stewart: Tax ramifications are huge in construction versus renovated properties. In East Hampton, they’re basing new construction on recently sold comps, so your reassessment only happens when it’s torn down. If you apply for a building permit, it’s done by square footage. You may have gutted your house, but your taxes won’t be reflecting that. Kyle Messinger: We’ll have customers that will mix, too. We’ll have a house that will be taken down, but there might be barns on the property that they want to preserve. Masi: Sometimes it costs just as much to renovate as it does to build a new house. But at the same time, sometimes the renovations are more interesting than the construction. We’re working on the Methodist church in Sag Harbor. It’s being converted into a home. You open up the walls and there are portions of it built from boats; there are inscriptions on the beams from the 1860s. Having that as a part of the story of the building is great,

and it makes it just so much more interesting. What are the places where you should or should not compromise? Masi: That depends on each person. If you’re talking to a chef, it’s all about the kitchen. Someone who’s just out to be at the beach, it would probably be amenities, the outdoor showers and things like that. But really, the bones, the mechanical is something that’s worthwhile—from an energy perspective, performance, for sure, but also safety. Roxane Mosleh: You’ll see so many structures that look as though they’re on their last leg, but they just need paint. We actually own what was the Southampton Hunt and Riding Club. It was sound. It needed new wiring; it needed to be updated as far as becoming a residence. It was mostly cosmetic; it just needed a lot of paint and a new kitchen. Masi: What we tell people if they’re really serious about renovating is to live in the house for a little bit, if they can. Spend a summer in it. See what works. See what doesn’t work. Curiale: The best advice I could ever give anybody is to talk to the builders, the real estate agents, the architects, the accountants, the mortgage company, and not talk to their cousin Joe who did it in Maryland for half the price. It’s really valuable to make sure that people are getting îî

“sometimes the renovations are more interesting than the construction, because they tell a story about the history of the place.”—paul masi The Elizabeth II project’s large central space combines kitchen, living, and dining areas and features custom light fixtures designed by Bates Masi + Architects.

advice from professionals in the area who are familiar with the property, who are familiar with renovating in that town, and getting the information they need to actually make something that is going to be of value later. What kinds of details are trendsetting now in renovations? Mosleh: Modern interiors are definitely back, and that’s my forte. That’s where my passion is. Clients are looking for very clean environments, very minimal living, smart houses, and organized living. Messinger: Everything is light and bright; no more of the traditional dark floors. You’re seeing thin moldings, bringing indoor out, floor-to-ceiling glass, bi-folding. You’re still seeing the traditional Hamptons shingle, but you’re seeing mixes now of stucco finishes with metal roofs. Minardi: There was a home that I had for sale in the Northwest Woods where it’s very traditional on the outside, but the inside is super modern. It wasn’t until I switched pictures to put the modern kitchen layout as the main photo that we really found somebody who just fell in love with it. Mosleh: A lot of people come to me with hotels as references. They like the textiles, furnishings. The other factor that we also discuss with our clients is the kitchen and the open living plan, because most clients do not want a formal dining room. Most clients do not feel the need to enclose their kitchens. Do you think that’s related to the growth of modernism in Manhattan? Stewart: A lot of my younger clients have something ultramodern but very high-end in Manhattan. Here, if they’re not on the ocean, they envision a country house; if this is a beach house, they’re going super modern. Mosleh: I have one client who believes if he’s going to own an old home, it should really be old, and nothing in the US is old to him. He feels that if he’s going to buy something older, he’ll buy something in Europe, so when he looks at something new, he really wants it to be new, and new is ultracontemporary today. Masi: Everyone has their preferences, and that’s what makes our area so interesting. But it’s about quality and being well-thought-out— that’s the most important thing, because those are the houses that are going to last. I have a deep respect for a lot of homes out here that I personally would never do, nor could I do, but I look at it and say, “Wow, this is done really, really well.” That’s what will enrich all of our lives.

The main house has four bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, and two fireplaces. The guest house has three bedrooms and three baths. It’s perfect if you have a lot of guests but you don’t really want to live with them. Matt Lauer just bought Richard Gere’s house in North Haven, and, at the moment, almost any house there with a water view is a hot property. Boating and heavenly vistas from the cliffs are the draw, and Mala Sander in Corcoran Group’s Sag Harbor office is the go-to agent. “Designer Lisa Perry, Jimmy Buffett, Nicole Miller, and Andrew Farkas,” says Sander, listing well-known residents in the area. “It’s highly affordable compared with south of the highway, and it’s great for boaters.” Although her husband’s family built a house there in the ’50s, Sander and her husband, Jeff, both former IBMers, didn’t move out East full time until 16 years ago. Jeff Sander is now mayor of North Haven. Why North Haven: “We fell in love with it when we first started coming out here in the ’80s,” says Sander. “The intention was to buy in Sag Harbor Village. The house we have now was a little cottage. We bought it as a weekend getaway, almost an acre on the water. But it was so precious and beautiful, we wanted to live there, so we renovated and

Five Pillars Yoga takes yoga off the mat and into people’s everyday lives.

Right movement, right nutrition, right breathing, right relaxation, right intention—these are the foundations of Five Pillars Yoga, a studio founded by Karen Mehiel, a yoga devotee, and Olga Palladino, a teacher and practitioner. The studio opened its doors on NYC’s Upper East Side in the spring of 2015, with a mission to take yoga off the mat and into people’s daily lives by developing a sense of peace, vibrant health, and mindfulness. Now through Labor Day, Five Pillars is hosting a pop-up “sanctuary” in Water Mill. “At first we thought we might just do a weekend retreat,” says Mehiel. “But then this really beautiful and calming space opened up, and we seized the opportunity.” The duo opened Five Pillars because they felt the Upper East Side lacked a studio where students could get spiritual teachings as well as a physical and mental release. When their clients started demanding a presence in the Hamptons, they happily obliged. Classes will include Vinyasa, Restorative, and Yin, plus a brand-new class called Cross Flow X, which combines yoga with heart-pumping cardio and strengthening. Says Mehiel, “Yoga has changed my whole being.” 726 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 500-9200; fivepillarsyoga.com

Dine on one of chef Eric Miller’s passionately prepared delicacies, like the signature East Hampton harbor fluke with capers and toasted orzo, while feasting your eyes on the stunning sunset and open-air views of East Hampton Marina and Gardiner’s Bay.
