#INSTAHAMPTONS For designer Peter Som, the luxury of having time to relax in the pool—while still looking fabulous—is the essence of Hamptons style.
PEACE OF MIND FASHION DESIGNER PETER SOM FINDS CLARITY AND INSPIRATION IN THE BEAUTY OF THE HAMPTONS. AS TOLD TO DANIELLE COHEN
“There’s a reason why artists for generations have been inspired by the landscape, the lighting, the colors of the Hamptons. There’s just a sheer beauty to the place—a sense of sky, and the way the light meets the water. What’s always inspiring about
4
HAMPTONS-MAGAZINE.COM
Hamptons style is the embrace of bright colors and patterns—I love it! “From the vineyards to the fields to when the sunflowers and corn come up, you really sense all four of the seasons. That’s something I love. “And it’s not just the natural beauty; it’s also the
farmstands, the chance to just be lazy. I think that one of the most precious gifts of all is just time. Hamptons style is all about a mix of effortless ease and laid-back luxury, which is really what I always aspire to when I design. Looking like you haven’t tried too hard—but
still looking fabulous—is Hamptons style to me. “Being in the Hamptons is a chance to breathe deeply, to breathe in the fresh air and just take time. It clears the head when you come back home. You just approach the week with a clear head and a centered mind.”

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
This is the second time I have had the pleasure of working with Maria Sharapova. Watching athletes evolve is something quite fascinating, as sports truly is similar to any other career. You have highs and lows and moments you wish to rejoice in and others you wish to hide from. Sharapova, in her memoir Unstoppable: My Life So Far, out this September, discusses the gamut of her career, from her start in Russia to winning five Grand Slam titles to addressing what she considers a mistake (and an unfair accusation of doping): taking a heart medication that was banned from the sport of tennis, suspending her from play for 15 months. Well, her comeback is now. In this issue, she candidly discusses her setbacks and her
unquestionable rally. Personally, I am thrilled to have Sharapova back on the cover of Hamptons magazine. Kate Betts interviews Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni about her book After Andy: Adventures in Warhol Land, in which she turns an eye on her own illustrious career running in the same circles as Andy Warhol. And speaking of rich history, there is no greater lure than Jackie Kennedy. We explore the East End’s past and young Jackie side by side to celebrate a new exhibit at the East Hampton Historical Society. Enjoy the weekend!

Fashion for fall is always fun and exciting. Though it’s still the middle of August, we look forward to fall so we can grab our layers of cashmere and wool, get cozy, and enjoy the very best time on the East End: our long and stunning Indian summer. As Coco Chanel said, “Fashion fades; only style remains the same,” and in this issue, look for styles that exemplify our way of life out East: the chic yet downto-earth designs that we enjoy wearing here. Recently someone posted on my Facebook timeline that the Hamptons aren’t the Hamptons at all; each town has its own distinctive personality, and that is so true. East Hampton has a completely different look and feel than Southampton. Montauk is beachy, a little rugged, and now very fashionforward. Sag Harbor retains the small-town feel it had when it was a whaling village so long

ago. Even my little hamlet of East Quogue has its own personality. Westhampton Beach is open late nights on summer weekends, including its shopping destinations and ice cream spots, with music from the Beach Bakery Cafe wafting into the street. It’s a great destination for families or a place to conclude your night out. Each town has many different clothing and accessories shops to choose from, but when you start to explore this time of year, you will see they have one thing in common: fashions for fall in all of the windows. We will be all across the East End with this weekend’s events! They include the 69th annual Artists & Writers Charity Softball Game, the 2017 Bow Wow Meow Ball for the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, and An Intimate Evening Under the Stars with Michael Bolton, then we finish off the weekend on Sunday with Ellen’s Run! Think fashion fall forward, shop our unique villages across the Hamptons, enjoy all that this beautiful place and time bring to you, and I’ll see you in town.

LAVIANO LUXURY BRAND COMES TO SOUTHAMPTON
INVITED
It started with a color palette, which led to the development of high quality fabrics, then to the recreation of tailored boundaries. LAVIANO, founded by sisters Chelsea and Halie, launched its first collection, Autumn-Winter 17/18 with its first retail shop on Jobs Lane in Southampton. The collection is geared towards a woman with a refined taste and an appreciation for the artistry behind each piece: from the winding journey of sourcing to hand-choosing the best raw materials from around the world. If you venture over to their stand-alone shop, you will understand their efforts to directly connect with the client, you might as well be are sitting in your friends living room having a tea. It’s an aesthetic vision that connects with the human mind in a way that comforts the spirit. Made from Italian fabrics, specialty laces from France, and Italian lambskin the garments are as admirable as any art form provoking emotion. Autumn Winter 17/18 “The Nu-Woman” introduces their internal muse: a real woman, laid back, free spirited and strong. Inspired by the silhouettes from the classic 20s and the offbeat 50s elegance of expression through style, bringing an ethereal modern twist for today’s woman.

HAMPTONS MAGAZINE INFLUENCER ISSUE CELEBRATION On Friday, July 28, Hamptons magazine celebrated our Influencer Issue with a soirée at the Montauk Yacht Club hosted by featured influencers, including Sailor BrinkleyCook, Rebecca Knox, Andrew Warren, Ryan Moore, Caitlin Imrie, Chloe Gifkins—who performed live for guests—and Michael Dougherty, who treated invitees to a sneak peek of his film Love and Everything in Between. Guests were greeted with Aperol spritz cocktails served from Aperol’s Ape Cart, brought in especially for the celebration, and mingled to music by DJ Martial. Event sponsors included Palm Bay International, Montauk Brewing Company, and SpikedSeltzer. The evening drew attention to Oceanic Global.
There is the sense of romance in the collection, the combination of old rose double duchess satin and leavers lace gives a classy yet indulging look. The sweetheart neckline portrays confidence to the conventional dress. Laviano revolutionizes the notion of softening traditional leather garments and adds a more feminine look through a laser cut leather wrap pencil dress or a romantic dark maroon suede gown.
Classic women suits are redefined through a more slimming swing like blazer twisted into a tailored trench. The basic stretch wool pant incorporates a touch of lace making a basic suit ready to go after a day at the office. Then the bold revolutionary pattern prints from the 50s join; in a navy geometric bias-cut tie maxi skirt and a modern Mandarin neck dress. The combination appeals to almost any woman and is in the ‘eye of the dressed’ ensuring confidence without even thinking about what you are wearing. 77 Jobs Lane Southampton, NY

BABY BOOM! JESSICA ALBA GIVES US THE SCOOP ON THE HONEST COMPANY’S NEW DIAPER LINE, A COLLABORATION WITH THE GREAT.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHER PATEY/CONTOUR BY GETTY IMAGES
BY SAMANTHA YANKS
Jessica Alba cofounded The Honest Company in 2012 to offer family-friendly, ecoconscious products and to pursue a mission of 100 percent accountability. This month the brand debuted a collaboration with stylists and designers Emily Current and Meritt Elliott of The Great. The Great Adventure diaper collection features autumnal prints, including the Camper Plaid, the Sweet Scout, the Great Adventure, and the Bandana. On August 5, they celebrated the launch at a private residence in East Hampton, benefiting the nonprofit organization Baby2Baby (baby2baby.org), which provides low-income families with diapers, kids’ clothing, and other basic necessities. At the event, guests signed a pledge, and for every signature, The Honest Company donated diapers to Baby2Baby. Since its inception, The Honest Company has given over 4 million diapers and more than 405,000 wipes, personal care items, cleaning products, vitamins, and gear to Baby2Baby, on whose board Alba serves (alongside Rachel Zoe and Molly Sims). We talked to Alba about the launch.
Of all the roles she has played, actress Jessica Alba says “mom” is her favorite—it’s “the most profound experience I’ve ever had”—and it inspired her devotion to the nonprofit Baby2Baby.

SCENE COLLABORATION
How did you hook up with Emily and Meritt? I was a fan. I followed them on Instagram and I thought they had great personal style, and I was a huge fan of Current Elliott, the first brand that they built. So I had started working with them as my styling team. And they’re entrepreneurs and they’re mommies, so we were always chatting about business, work, how we try to figure out how to prioritize our time, and then we always would come around to “Wouldn’t it be cool to do something together?” We just kept talking about it for years, and finally it was the perfect time for us at The Honest Company to do this type of collaboration, and they had two babies around the same time. How did you decide on the theme for the Great Adventure collection? We thought about fall trends… It was really approached from a fashion perspective, and with

their brand The Great, they celebrate America, being outdoors, and adventures, so we thought, What better setting than the Hamptons to launch? It’s so beautiful and it’s known for the beauty of nature. The diaper patterns are so spot-on trendwise. We started out with a bunch of concepts and we threw the ideas out to our Facebook fans, and our diaper subscribers told us what they love. Then those reactions drove the overall theme. We designed 50 diapers all within the theme, and then the Facebook fans chose what should be a boys’, girls’, or gender-neutral design, and that’s how we chose the patterns. And then we refined from there into a cohesive collection. So the five that you ended up with, tell me a little bit about those. I think the boy prints—I think all of them can be used on boys or girls because diapers are really
for the mom—but the plaid is really sweet, and so are the little creatures. And the main print, with the tents, celebrating old school, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, outdoor adventure. There’s a pink bandana, which is a classic thing, and we do a fresh, modern take on it by making it this really sweet color. And then there’s a denim print—we really love denim, kids look great in denim, so how do you do a cute denim print? And that one has little animals. And you are on the board of Baby2Baby? Yes, we give a percentage to Baby2Baby. We support other nonprofits, but that’s our key one, the one that we’ve been working with since day one. The giveback is so important! The Great Adventure diaper collection debuts in stores and online at Honest.com for subscribers on August 21; nonsubscribers can shop the collection online starting on August 28.

KITCHENTABLE BOOK WITH HER SECOND TITLE, THE HOME COOK, DUE NEXT MONTH, FOOD NETWORK STAR AND EXECUTIVE CHEF OF THE RESTAURANT BUTTER ALEX GUARNASCHELLI ALWAYS FEELS AT HOME OUT EAST.
Tell us about the new book. What can we expect? I wrote this thinking it would be extremely useful to the home cook. I want readers to get the pages dirty while they try out recipes for appetizers, main courses, salads, vegetables, desserts, and snacks. There are entire chapters on many of my favorite things to eat and to cook, chapters with recipes on cakes, salads, mushrooms, soups—just delicious! Any new restaurant projects on the horizon as well? I like to be at Butter and cook with my staff. I’m thinking of expanding into more catering, special events, and cooking classes as an additional layer of my business. More to come on all of that this fall. What do you like about your work on TV—and who’s your favorite cohost on Chopped? My favorite part is meeting and working with so many passionate, talented people who love food and cooking. I also really like competing with myself on TV. Choosing a favorite

I love tomatoes and strawberries in a salad. Just so fresh. What are you drinking this summer? I love a Miami Vice—half a frozen strawberry daiquiri swirled with half a frozen piña colada. So colorful and refreshing! What’s your favorite activity out East, other than cooking? I like to go antiques shopping and look for special finds. I like to drive to Montauk and explore the quaint shops and seaside restaurants. Now that you’re a “local,” do you have a favorite spot to eat? Estia’s Little Kitchen is one of my absolute favorites. I really like the whole feel of the place and their use of great ingredients. What’s your own favorite place to get ingredients? I love Pike and Balsam Farms and Mecox Bay Dairy—great produce and cheese. Who’s on your dinnerguest bucket list? I would love to cook for chef AnneSophie Pic. She has lived a life any style maven would relish—from working for Karl Lagerfeld to penning bios of Christian Dior and YSL muse Loulou de la Falaise. Now Natasha FraserCavassoni turns a keen eye on her own career. What inspired After Andy? Seeing Warhol’s giant Mao in the [Art Institute of Chicago] in 2014. All these memories flooded back, my first one being when I was 16 and Andy tried to set me up with an Armani model who was

the son of a collector. You covered parties for Interview. Who inspired you then? Nell Campbell, the queen of the night. Nothing compared to her nightclub, Nell’s. She was a natural hostess, fabulous conversationalist, and possessed an eye for people. How was writing about your family? It was easy to write about my late father and my stepfather, Harold Pinter, but hard to write about my mother and siblings, since they are still alive and somewhat terrifying! Mum
always encouraged us to write. She used to pay us one pound per page when penning our diaries. What’s your favorite Hamptons spot? The American Hotel in Sag Harbor, where writers like John Steinbeck used to hang out. The atmosphere reminds me of my bohemian childhood and my parents’ writer friends. Any advice for aspiring fashion writers? Read, read, read and then strengthen your references by boning up on art history. Describe your style in three words. State of siege.

Beloved for dainty bowed pumps as well as sexy stilettos, Salvatore Ferragamo is making an appeal to younger customers while maintaining the craftsmanship so important to its loyal clientele. To that end, the 90-year-old familyrun Florentine luxury house brought in 38-year-old Englishman Paul Andrew— a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award winner and designer of his own eponymous label—as its first women’s footwear director last fall. “My intention is to create shoes that make a woman not only look beautiful, confident, and strong,” says Andrew, “but feel beautiful, confident, and strong.” He began by studying Ferragamo archives dating from the 1930s through the ’50s. “I reconsidered the proportions, the make, and fabrication, and made them relevant for today,” Andrew says. The sculptural “flower” heel, used for pumps and sandals since 1939, is one example: Andrew reimagined it in a galvanized metal finish applied in an Italian automotive factory. they really needed for a shoe to be practical, comfortable, and desirable.” So when asked to take sides on the eternal fashion dichotomy of comfort or style, Andrew doesn’t. “Both,” he says. “Undoubtedly both.” Americana Manhasset, 2016 Northern Blvd., 516-3659765; ferragamo.com

"From a managers perspective, the transition from Norma Reynolds Sotheby's International Realty to Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty has been an exciting one! I am so lucky to be still working with the successful and established agents from Norma Reynolds Sotheby's International Realty, but the difference between our company then to the present is we now have the technology, marketing and corporate resources to bring our agents and the Westhampton Beach office to new heights of success. Before becoming Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, we were definitely successful, but we lacked the marketing presence, technology resources and general support necessary to be the top agency in the Hamptons market. Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty not only gives support to agents at a local branch level, but at the corporate level as well. They take the time to make sure each agent is a member of the Daniel Gale family and focus on the personal success of each agent. This is evident with our agents success levels already rising after only five short months as Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty. With the global reach of Sotheby's International Realty, the local expertise of our top luxury agents and now backed by the leading Long Island waterfront luxury real estate company of Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, I am confident that Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty Westhampton Beach will be the top Real Estate company in our area!" Jackie Doskoez, Sales Manager, 631.288.1050 ext.13, c.631.603.5584
“We have to admit we were a bit skeptical about Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty – we weren’t sure if it would be a good fit for us but it was happening regardless of our concerns so we just continued working – listing and selling properties but with an open mind to the change. We decided to jump right in and take advantage of what Daniel Gale had to offer. The recommended vendor list has been a great resource and we currently use the services of a talented photographer from that list on all of our listings. We have also worked with a very good staging company from the list as well. Being "techies", Daniel Gale's technology and internet presence is impressive and we utilize several of their programs in our business. What we are most pleased with and what we think going forward has and will really make a difference in our business is the referral base, having such a strong force of smart, successful agents in key areas to network with is a huge benefit and it has already had a positive impact on our business." Rose Alfano, 631.288.1050 ext.40, c.631.335.8810, rosealfano@danielgale.com Eileen Brod, 631.288.1050 ext.12, c.917.453.9662, eileenbrod@danielgale.com
"As the Marketing Coordinator, two words immediately come to mind: Opportunity and Support. Since we became Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty a few months ago, our agents have had the opportunity to utilize publications and websites that we had never had access to. For me, it has also meant having the ability to put ad campaigns and marketing plans into place more easily and ensure the best exposure." Brienne Doskoez, Marketing Coordinator 631.288.1050 ext.11, c.631.745.8341
“When I made the decision to sell the company that bore my namesake, it was a decision that I did not take lightly...I wanted to make sure that I sold to a company that held the same values and ideals that made Norma Reynolds Sotheby's such a successful company for over 40 years. When I met with the executives from Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, I immediately knew that Daniel Gale was the right fit not only for me, but for the agents and staff that I consider family. I think it is a wonderful environment for me to transition from owner/broker into an agent role.” Victoria Reynolds, 631.288.1050 ext.19, c.631.834.3440
"Prior to joining Norma Reynolds, I had been in a corporate realty firm for 17 years. The “family” environment here was like a breath of fresh air, and I am so pleased that Daniel Gale continues the same family support and values. Two excellent benefits of my affiliation with Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty are access to a more expansive networking base and broader, more relevant marketing and advertising opportunities. I look forward to my future with the company and know that these new opportunities are exactly what I need to help my business grow and thrive!" Elyse Weissman, 631.288.1050 ext.22, c.516.381.0917
"Becoming Daniel Gale Sotheby’s has given me the opportunity to grow my established referral business into an even broader network of successful real estate agents. I was even given the opportunity to join some of the top-producing agents in our company at an exclusive event in Manhattan recently. I had previously worked with the Referral and Relocation department, but since becoming Daniel Gale have seen an increase in my referral business and have received support from the referral office that has helped me get new business and ensure that any customers referred out are always taken care of." Christopher Foglia, 631.288.1050 ext.38, c.631.831.2515
"Vicky and I have recently become partners. We have always worked wonderfully together and now that we have the support and resources from Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, we can focus on listing and selling more exclusive Hamptons luxury properties. We are also excited about the "perks" of being a Daniel Gale agent, like the Gold Circle family of agents that are rewarded with exclusive week-long trips! We look forward to earning our place in the Gold Circle and enjoying everything that the company has to offer.” Sarita Silver, 631.288.288.1050 ext.31, c.917.593.2918
"Being a lifelong resident of the Hamptons and being in the business for over 30 years, the most important thing to me is working with an agency that is like family; supporting and encouraging each others successes. This is what has made my business grow and allowed me to work hard knowing I had support from my broker and staff. Now that we are Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, I am so happy that we are with a company that also treats their agents like family. I am looking forward to networking with more of the Daniel Gale family and using the tools to grow my business." Janet Booth, 631.288.1050 ext.29, c.516.578.7626

NET RESULTS In the midst of a tennis comeback, five-time Grand Slam singles winner and business entrepreneur Maria Sharapova took time out for a chat. by ANN LIGUORI
WHEN I TALKED WITH MARIA SHARAPOVA early this summer, she had just come off a 15-month ban for use of meldonium, a prescribed heart medication she had been taking for 10 years that had been added to the banned drug list, unbeknown to her, just before she tested positive for it at the 2016 Australian Open. She affirms that she was never advised of the change and fought rigorously to overturn her suspension (which was reduced from two years to 15 months) and clear her name. Sharapova was in France at the time of our conversation, hoping to get a wildcard entry into the French Open—a championship she had won twice. The wild-card didn’t happen. Wimbledon, the first Major title she won in 2004 as a 17-year-old, shunned her wild-card hopes as well; and now Sharapova awaits the decision of the USTA regarding a wild-card entry for the upcoming US Open, which starts August 28. Sharapova, the 2006 US Open champ, will try to work her way through the US Open qualifying tournament, if need be, a week earlier. During the difficult time away from professional competition, the overachiever did plenty to keep busy. She traveled, decorated a new home in California, took a global strategic management class at Harvard Business School, interned at an advertising agency, spent a week shadowing NBA Commissioner Adam Silver (whom she calls “one of the best leaders in sports”), oversaw her expanding Sugarpova confectionary brand, and completed her fiercely honest autobiography, Unstoppable: My Life So Far. Cowritten by Rich Cohen, the compelling read, out in mid-September, is a refreshing look at the tennis superstar’s rags-to-riches story. As a young girl, Sharapova moved to the US from Siberia with her father, taking a bus to Florida with little money in her pocket and not a word of English, to attend the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy (now IMG Academy). The rest, as they say, is history.

How relieved are you to get your side of the story out there? As a professional athlete, there’s only so much that you’re allowed to keep to yourself, just because of the openness in which you have to carry your life, from press conferences to meet-and-greets to playing in front of thousands of people. But I think the vulnerability with which I was able to finish the book makes it that much better, because during that period I really learned that, as a woman especially, vulnerability is not something that is easy to share. There are so many instances when I was vulnerable or I didn’t feel like I had a lot of power or strength, and I look back at those times, and they made me so strong. Because of that, I share a lot more in the book than I would have if I didn’t go through [that experience]. That’s a part of what I find so compelling about your book, that you’re not hesitant to open up about the suspension. I didn’t write about what happened until maybe six months or so had passed. I think it was just too tough. But I still had the time to finish those chapters, and to become comfortable with actually writing [down] my feelings and what I was going through. During the moment, and during all the legal procedures, it was really hard to write; it was almost like I wanted it over with, and I just didn’t want my memory and my words to be on paper. Then when I felt like it was the right time, I sat down and just started writing. You were very descriptive about being suspended. In the book, you wrote that you “had a bottomless hole beneath my life and in I went. Everything I worked for since I was 4 years old, that whole crazy struggle, was suddenly cast in a new, terrible, unfair light. What followed were days of despair.” Then you said you were determined that what happened to you last year would not be the last word. That’s powerful material. Thank you. It’s the frame of mind that I had from early last year, from the first few

“When you have something taken away from you, you don’t know if you can ever get it back. So I have a lot to [feel] fortunate for!” says tennis ace Maria Sharapova, who is hoping to compete in this year’s US Open.

“When you’re on the tour 10 months out of the year, there’s so much unknown,” says Sharapova, who used her time away from the court to take a class at Harvard Business School, intern at an ad agency, and work on her grippingly candid autobiography.
“AS I LOOK BACK AT WHAT I’VE ACHIEVED, IT WAS DEFINITELY SAD TO THINK THAT ANYONE WOULD SAY I EVER TOOK THE EASY WAY OUT. THE EASY WAY OUT WAS NEVER EVEN IN THE CARDS!” days of when I found out that I’d be out of the game for a while. It’s the attitude that I carried with me throughout this whole period, and that also comes from my life experience. As I look back at who I am as a person and what I’ve achieved, it was definitely sad to think that anyone would say I ever took the easy way out. As you read the story, it shares a lot of that tough journey, and the easy way out was never even in the cards! My feelings [were] like, You’re going into this deep hole and yet you still have so many years ahead of you… how are you going to turn this around? How are you going to step up? Those are all things that I think parts of my childhood really prepared me for, and with the way that I’ve been able to handle it. I can say that I’m proud of where I’ve come to be. Do you feel that you’re even more determined than ever now to get back to the top of the game? It’s funny, what I play for is so different now than what I played for when I was younger. When you’re away from something for a long time, you realize what you really miss and why. There are so many things in tennis that I don’t really get in other parts in my life: I play for the competition; I play for the victories that I can earn with my team, who also help me be the player that I am, who work with me on a daily basis. There’s a lot that I play for, and what happened was a roadblock. [But] I don’t have that mind-set to use something like that as ammunition. It’s never really been the way that I think. You said that after Serena Williams beat you in the 2015 Australian Open finals, you looked forward to the coming season, which would be one of your last. I didn’t realize that you were thinking of retirement at that point. I’d been playing professionally since I was very young, and there were certainly moments in life where you want to feel like a normal person. You want to be there for your friends and for your family, when they need you and not just when you can. Going into another press conference after a loss, and everything that you built on the court, in 15 minutes getting punished for losing a match… it makes you think. And in that period of my career, retirement was very much [on my mind]. I have so many other passions in my life as well, and although tennis has [been] the core of my life in the past 30 years, as a woman, there’s so much to look forward to. I was 28; at that stage, I never really thought that I’d play past Rio [the 2016 Summer Olympics]. What are your thoughts now about retiring? Sometimes I look back at that moment, and the conversation I had with my manager that I describe in the book, and I remember it so vividly—I’m sitting there and losing a quarter-final match and just being so down... you have to go to the next tournament; you’ve got to pack your bags. And we were talking about a contract renegotiation I just had. It was around the time of
my next birthday—I was turning 30—and I told him, “I really want to celebrate my 30th birthday. I don’t want to have any tournament commitments. I just want to celebrate my birthday as a normal human being.” And it was like “bam!” It’s like someone just listens to this and goes, “Oh, you want to experience what normal is like?” So this year I had a completely normal 30th birthday where my friends from all around the world came, and we got to celebrate it, and it was great. But I still felt like I’m missing something in my life. So that was a real eye-opener for me. So you decided “normal” wasn’t that great? No, normal is great. Normal is fantastic—having weekends and making plans, and having a schedule that’s just a little bit more predictable than having a tennis schedule. All those things, they were comfortable. When you’re on the tour, and you’re traveling 10 months out of the year, there’s so much unknown. Of course, you know that you have a tournament this week and that week, but you don’t know how you’re going to do. You don’t know in what city you’re going to play next. You don’t know if you’re going to add a tournament. You don’t know what event you’re going to be at, what projects you’re going to be a part of. It was nice to settle down, to have a bit of a home life. I know it sounds so simple, but just [to have] weekends, and Saturday nights… Saturday nights weren’t any different to me than a Wednesday night as a professional athlete. It was nice to have experiences in school and study for three weeks, and then go do internships. I would have never done those things if I had a full-time professional athlete’s career. With Serena on a pregnancy break, do you feel like there’s even a better shot for you now to get back to where you were? I can’t look past the fact that I haven’t played for a long period of time, and you can never replicate what you do in training to playing matches. So I have to look at what’s ahead of me, and that’s the next match and the next tournament. It takes a lot to get that feeling back of the repetitiveness, the match play, of playing five matches in seven days. The physicality of it is very intense, and that’s one of the things a lot of people overlook, the amount of physical strain the body goes through in a week. To be able to do it week in, week out is an adjustment for someone who hasn’t played for a while. So that’s where my mind and my focus is, rather than who I’m going to be playing against. Sounds like you’re in a really good place right now. Thanks. I feel like getting back to what I’ve done since I was a young girl just makes me that much happier, being able to be where I feel that I belong, and where I am best at. When you have something taken away from you, you don’t know if you can ever get it back. So I have a lot to [feel] fortunate for!

Its creation spanned over three decades and required a creative vision, an ability to turn dreams into reality, and a great deal of dedicated hard work by many people. Christian Wรถlffer possessed the vision and, with the meticulous care of his professional team, built this special place. The original parcel of land was a potato farm with an old farmhouse in what is now the middle of the estate. Over the years, as more acres were acquired, paddocks and stables were added and, in 1988, the vineyard was founded. This 55-acre vineyard is part of a 175-acre estate with boarding stables, 39 paddocks, an indoor jumping ring, and a Grand Prix field. Both the stables and winery have a European character and, from these former potato fields, world-class wines have come forth. Wรถlffer Estate Vineyard is an American winery in the classic European tradition.

Connect with East Hampton history through beautiful photographs of the future Jacqueline Kennedy in the must-see exhibition “Young Jackie on the South Fork.” by MICHAEL BRAVERMAN

FIRST, A YOUNG LADY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY THOMAS KELLEY, SOUTHAMPTON NY, COURTESY OF WWW.GREYGARDENSOFFICIAL.COM, THE OFFICIAL BRAND FOR GREY GARDENS & LITTLE EDIE’S LEGACY
The eyes are dark and wide set, and in most of the photographs they look directly and unflinchingly at the camera. The face is generally serious and unsmiling, but not unfriendly, and radiates poise, confidence, and intelligence.
Strikingly, the face of Jacqueline Bouvier as a child and young woman is the precise face, except for the trace of some added years and a more cultivated beauty, that left the world breathless when the glamorous Jackie Kennedy became America’s first lady and a global celebrity. Later, it would be the face of courage, in full view of a grieving world, when she instantly became the most recognized widow on earth. The early black-and-white photographs are on display at Clinton Academy in East Hampton, in a show titled “Young Jackie on the South Fork” that was organized by the East Hampton Historical Society. They were taken by Bert Morgan, considered the dean of high-society photographers, who worked in the Hamptons, Palm Beach, Newport, Saratoga, and other fashionable locales from the 1920s to the 1980s. Morgan could hardly have guessed at the destiny of the self-assured girl he photographed in the 1930s and early 1940s, but what he captured suggests a person quite out of the ordinary, even in her predictable social sphere in that time and place. For that reason, the exhibition is provocative. You can’t help wondering if you see any foreshadowing, in the resolute, pensive look of this child in her jodhpurs and tweed jacket, of the woman who would later captivate the country, whose images were some of the most iconic of her generation. “Where we had options, we were able to really decide which look, which expression, which movement was telling a story we wanted to share,” says Jill Malusky, executive director of the East Hampton Historical Society, who chose the photos for the show. “Because Bert photographed her frequently, there was an acceptance, a familiarity, and she let her guard down. He captures some really playful expressions. It was said by teachers that young Jackie was spirited and mischievous, and you can see that look in a few images. I’d like to think this roguish spirit has a strength to it, and over time, she cultivated it into the grace and reserve we see in her later images—that sort of selfpreservation takes real power.” Morgan’s photos in the show and in the related book Young Jackie: Photographs of Jacqueline Bouvier reveal the moneyed, privileged world in which his subject grew up. With the encouragement of her socialite mother, Morgan began photographing Jackie when she was 3 years old for the social pages of local newspapers, then continued shooting her at horse shows, dog shows, and parties. Most of the pictures, particularly the earliest, are equestrian, showing her at 4 and 5 years old on a pony or horse, in riding gear, competing at various shows or mounted on her favorite horse, Danseuse. Riding, jumping, and foxhunting became lifelong passions for Jackie. And when she isn’t with a horse in the Morgan photos, she is often with a dog. She appears marginally more comfortable and happy with the animals than with the adults around her. Jacqueline Lee Bouvier was born in Southampton Hospital on July 28, 1929, and continued to summer in or visit the Hamptons for years. Both sets of her grandparents, the Bouviers and the Lees, newly wealthy Catholic families with newly invented aristocratic lineages, had homes in East Hampton. Her parents were married on Buell Lane in St. Philomena’s Catholic Church, now called Church of the Most Holy Trinity. Most of Jackie’s parents’ and grandparents’ generations are buried in East Hampton. The Bouvier estate, located on Further Lane near the ocean and the Maidstone
Club, was named Lasata—a Native American word meaning “place of peace.” Here, on 12 acres that held a stable, jumping ring, and paddock, Jackie learned to ride and spent happy summers with her close-knit family. She had easy, loving relationships with her father and grandfather, who indulged her in every way (including later sending her horse to Vassar to be with her), but had a more complicated one with her less affectionate mother. In many ways, Jackie’s childhood was idyllic; her parents’ contentious marriage was the exception. Her father, nicknamed Black Jack, was known to drink, gamble, overspend, and have extramarital affairs. While he may have been an imperfect husband, he seems to have been a very good father who adored his daughter and was in turn adored by her. Jackie’s parents fought, and the financial situation was occasionally rocky. Her mother, Janet, found comfort in horseback riding, as did Jackie as an adult. Her parents finally divorced in 1940, when Jackie was nearly 11. As one historian puts it, Janet taught Jackie “that a woman could succeed only by marrying for money, albeit at the cost of much pain and suffering.” This was certainly true to some extent, since, according to Jackie’s biographies, financial insecurity was always a concern, and she depended on wealthy men. With her elegance and refinement, intellect and acumen, schooling and travels, social skills, some family money, and immense assurance, she was well positioned to achieve what she set her sights on. A timeline of young Jackie’s activities paints a picture of her early life in East Hampton. “I’D LIKE TO THINK THIS ROGUISH SPIRIT HAS A STRENGTH TO IT— THAT SORT OF SELF-PRESERVATION TAKES REAL POWER.”
T
he Bouvier family had been embedded in East Hampton history since 1910, when John Vernou Bouvier Jr., Jackie’s grandfather, known as the Major, bought a small house called Wildmoor on Apaquogue Road. In 1925, Jackie’s grandmother, Maude Sergeant Bouvier, who had her own family money, purchased Lasata (built in 1917). After receiving an inheritance from an uncle, the Major bought the house from his wife in 1935. While we don’t know their private business affairs, the purchase seems to indicate theirs was not a marriage with shared assets. Though their relationship was troubled for years, they managed to remain together. The more famous Bouvier house, Grey Gardens, came into the family when John and Maude Bouvier’s daughter Edith and her husband, Phelan Beale (a law partner of John’s), purchased it in 1924. In another troubled marriage, Phelan abruptly and unceremoniously got a Mexican divorce from Edith in 1946, informing her by telegram. Their beautiful, fashionable daughter, Little Edie, lived in New York City but later returned to live at Grey Gardens with Big Edie, even as the house fell into disrepair. The Bouvier links to East Hampton did not break with Jackie and Little Edie. Bouvier Beale Jr., the grandson of Big Edie and Phelan, and cousin of Jackie, recalls some family history: “I remember, as a child, visiting East Hampton to celebrate birthdays with my grandmother at places like the Palm. [My wife] Eva and I got married in Bridgehampton in 1980, with a reception at Gurney’s on the ocean. Little Edie was at our wedding, which was very special for us. It was during that time that we fell in love with East Hampton and Amagansett all over again, eventually purchasing a home. I feel immense pride in owning property in a town where my family has such deep roots. The family connection to East Hampton remains as strong as it was decades ago.” Commenting on the Morgan photography exhibit and the interest in young Jackie, Bouvier Beale says, “We have wonderful letters from Jackie to the Edies, talking about her nostalgia for her youth and those sunny summer days spent at Lasata with all the Beale cousins, where Big Edie would sing to them under the tree. Jackie mentions how great it would be to get all the cousins together again and cook hamburgers and carve pumpkins at Halloween.” Beale’s wife, Eva Marie, maintains the Grey Gardens archives. She recalls, “Jackie said in a letter to the two Edies that people fall into two classes: life-enhancing or life-diminishing.” Jackie wrote, “In the Life-Enhancing category, I put Daddy and both of you.” In 2008, the Beales published the book Edith Bouvier Beale of Grey Gardens: A Life in Pictures, featuring Little Edie’s writings and drawings and memorable photographs of a woman now celebrated for her originality and style. “We were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response to our book, and that was when we knew we needed to start a brand that would keep their legacy alive,” Eva Marie Beale says. “With Big and Little Edie as our muses, Grey Gardens (shopgreygardens.com) is a lifestyle brand that represents those who stay true to themselves and take pride in expressing themselves through character and style. We place a big focus on luxury and quality, so that our pieces can be enjoyed and passed down to generations to come.” So the Bouvier family legacy in East Hampton lives on via contemporary innovations like branding. The exhibition “Young Jackie on the South Fork” reminds us just how important this family history is, through the determined face of this exceptional young woman on horseback. “Young Jackie on the South Fork” is on view through October 8 at Clinton Academy, 151 Main St., East Hampton, 631-324-6850; easthamptonhistory.org.

By the time Jackie enrolled at Vassar College as a literature major, in 1947, her interests had shifted away from East Hampton toward the social scene in Newport and the Virginia hunt country, where her mother, now married to the extremely rich Hugh D. Auchincloss Jr., had homes. Jackie soon began studying and traveling in Europe, perfecting her French, enhancing her proficiency in art and literature, and becoming a highly cultured young woman. Her most intimate connections to East Hampton faded as she put her childhood and adolescence behind her, but there’s no doubt that her confidence and strength, the ways she valued family and community, her love of horses and nature, and her creative instincts, particularly for writing, were all nurtured in the Hamptons.

HISTORY FOR SALE TWO GORGEOUS BOUVIER FAMILY PROPERTIES CAN NOW BE YOURS. Grey Gardens
“If you ask any realtor what are the two most iconic houses in the Hamptons, they’ll tell you Lasata, the Bouvier ancestral home, and Grey Gardens,” says Bouvier Beale Jr., Jacqueline Bouvier’s cousin. As it happens, while “Young Jackie on the South Fork” is on view, these two Bouvier residences are on the market. The classic estate Lasata has been split into two properties by current owners Reed Krakoff, the
creative director of Tiffany & Co., and his interior designer wife, Delphine. The 10-bedroom main home, with pool and guest house on 7.15 acres, is for sale at a reduced price of $35 million with three East Hampton agencies. The house originally went on the market in the same week that the Jackie biopic, starring Natalie Portman, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. The celebrated Bouvier house Grey Gardens,

home to Jackie’s aunt Edith “Big Edie” Bouvier Beale and cousin Little Edie, was bought in 1979 by journalist Sally Quinn and her husband, Washington Post Executive Editor Ben Bradlee. Located on two acres at the corner of Lily Pond Lane and West End Road, just off Georgica Beach, it is listed at $18 million by Michael Schultz with the Corcoran Group (631-324-3900; corcoran.com).

SHORE THING THE COMPACT GETAWAY HOME OF REAL ESTATE POWERHOUSE LOUISE PHILLIPS FORBES AND HER FAMILY PROVES THAT LIFE’S SIMPLE PLEASURES ARE OFTEN THE BEST.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW WILLIAMS
BY JEAN NAYAR
The story of Louise Phillips Forbes’s family getaway in the Hamptons starts about eight years ago, with a walk on the beach in Bridgehampton with her eldest son, Douglas. Barely 5 years old at the time, “he pointed his finger at a guy on a surfboard and said, ‘I want to do that,’” recalls Forbes, a leading New York-based real estate broker, whose team is ranked among the top 100 in the country by sales volume. And so, prompted by her son’s desire—and the idea that “the family that plays together stays together”—she and her husband, Christopher Forbes, took up surfing in ripe middle age; encouraged Douglas and later their younger son, Kenneth, to do the same; and commenced searching for a house in the Hamptons that would not only support their sporting activities, but also their family-oriented lifestyle. Ultimately, the couple found the property that met their needs in a derelict estate home in a little-known beachside community in Montauk. “It’s a magnificent secret,” says Forbes. “People call the area a trailer park, but it offers all the comforts I grew up with in Nashville, where children can safely roam in groups and fish or play hide-and-seek without constant supervision. The home hadn’t been touched since the 1960s, and we made an offer without even going past the door.” After closing the deal, they worked with the town of East Hampton to gain approval to demolish the old structure and build

a new one from scratch. The secluded neighborhood, known as Montauk Shores, emerged during the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s and is populated with modest homes, including several old midcentury Airstreams. The family’s petite new 1,160-squarefoot, two-bedroom, two-bath residence was premanufactured in two parts in Illinois, then constructed on the existing foundation. While the house meets the requirements of one of only two plans allowed by the town, the couple was able to customize it in many ways to suit their tastes. “I wanted it to blend with the environment and the community,” says Forbes, “but also to pop with design.” To that end, they wrapped the exterior with stacked siding made of ipe
wood and collaborated with the Novogratz design team in Los Angeles to outfit the interiors with fresh, easy-care furnishings and works of art by East End artists, such as Tony Caramanico. “Every room is a postage stamp, so it all had to be connected aesthetically,” Forbes explains. Against a clean white backdrop with bleached wood-look floors, fabrics in lively colors and subtle patterns energize the compact rooms, while classic and custom modern furnishings add substance and function. “We call our home a jewel box,” says Forbes. “It gives us the freedom to be present for the kids and not be fussing on the house. It also allows our kids to understand that we don’t need much; we just need to be together.”

DOWN TO THE LAST STONE, AND AWASH IN LUXE MATERIALS, THIS GRAND SOUTHAMPTON ESTATE WAS BUILT TO IMPRESS.
The 10,000-square-foot residence at 101 Pheasant Lane was the last project of the late architect Francis Fleetwood, and when builder Jim Matuski took it on, he was immediately struck by the meticulous attention to detail. “I knew this was going to be very special before we put a shovel in the ground,” says Matuski, the owner of Hampton Builders. “I never saw a house with this much attention to what is on the inside. It’s unparalleled.” From the materials to the design, from the wiring to the layout, every aspect of this nine-bedroom, 11-bath Hamptons traditional is carefully considered. The owner can control everything remotely, whether it’s turning up the heat in the hot tub from the city or switching on a light in the living room from across the world. The materials, too, are second to none. Take the marble: “All the marble in the house was imported from Italy,” says Matuski. “The tub in her master [bath] is hand cut from a solid two-ton block of marble. The marble in all the bathrooms was cut in Italy.” Some 26 marble workers were flown over from that country to do the measurements, cutting the stone in Italy, before returning to finish the installation.

clockwise from left: The luxury estate has been built to the highest standards, down to the smallest details; a bathroom inside one of the elegant master suites; the Francis Fleetwood-designed 15,700-squarefoot home features a sunken all-weather tennis court.
The stone was just as exactingly selected. “There’s over 150 tons of stone, surrounding the house and the tennis court,” says Matuski. “Each piece was hand-cut and hand-placed.” When Matuski talks about the home’s construction, he can’t conceal his awe. “When you walk into the house, it’s pure elegance. I’ve built a hundred homes in the Hamptons and nothing compares to this.” You could marvel at the fact that you couldn’t find a TV in the house if you tried—each flatscreen is disguised as a mirror or covered with a piece of art that rolls up at the touch of a button. Even the door knobs are one-ofa-kind, individually forged in a foundry in the south of France. But if you get too consumed in the details, you might miss the big picture, which is that, in addition to the exceptional construction, this house also sits on a rare property. On a nearly two-acre lot, the home has a stunningly landscaped yard, sunken all-weather tennis court, and heated pool. And with ocean beach access in Southampton Village, you could say it’s still a beach house. “You feel as though you’ve come to the beach in the most elegant manner possible,” says Matuski. 101 Pheasant Lane, Southampton, is listed for $26.95 million by Erica Grossman at Douglas Elliman, 70 Jobs Lane, Southampton, 631-2042723; ericagrossman.elliman.com.

The all-white kitchen of the past is getting a modern update. “We are seeing a lot less of the ‘extreme’ version of the classic white kitchen,” says Chris Barriatua, executive director at Henrybuilt (12 Crosby St.,
New York, 212-966-5797; henrybuilt.com), a design company best known for kitchen and whole-house storage systems. “There used to be a lot of demand for the traditional painted-white, leaded-glass, trim-heavy, crystal-knob kitchen. The ‘now’ version of the white kitchen is more nuanced.” The
subtle layering of different shades and materials—like powdercoated metal, anodized aluminum, solid acrylic, and bead-blasted stainless steel—gives a personal touch. Says Barriatua, “[It should] feel like humans made it, not like it fell from a spaceship.” —Callie Chute

What makes Sag Harbor your favorite town? Sag Harbor is salty and wonderful. The Village creates a community, a place filled with colors and character. Are you from the Hamptons or did you come from away? I come from St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, where the sense of village and groundedness is a main ingredient.
What’s the best place to get lunch in Sag Harbor? Cavaniola’s Kitchen. I get the prosciutto, brie, and apple on a fresh baguette with homemade potato chips and their delicious homemade lemonade. I take it to Marine Park, overlooking the marina, and sit in the grass under a tree. And what’s your favorite dinner spot? The people who own Sen
think the way I do about my business: they do a few things really well instead of doing a lot of things. They spend the time and money to bring the best chefs over from Japan—it’s the real deal. Where do you most like to spend a few hours relaxing? Trout Pond, or an offthe-path swimming hole. I love it because it’s wild. It’s not so cultivated or engineered or refined.
What is it about real estate in the Hamptons that gives you an inside view of the area? In Sag Harbor, there are people who have owned things through generations. I learn about the area because I deal with the original people who have been here forever. design work? SM: The clientele is more educated about what’s available. They start their search online. Pictures get them in there. And clearing is a big issue. Nobody can just clear acres because they want lawn. BM: Lots of our projects are site-sensitive. SD: It’s going to get worse. There’s not a lot of vacant property. AS: People pay premium even though the house will be torn down. How are people spending their money? AS: People want to generate more value with what they have, rather than trading up or down. They’re renovating. People have to have an emotional connection to what they’re investing in for it to have a really strong result. FD: If somebody’s not doing solar panels, they’re not financially responsible. There’s the payback period of six years for a lifespan on panels between 30 and 40 years. You have 24 years of free electricity. SD: Value is all about happiness. Some people’s is based on making an extra $500,000. Other people’s is based on every day you go out, the kids run outside, and it’s a safe zone. What interesting homes and gardens have you seen lately? West Chin: One is Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan; the other is one of those nine-year leases down at Lazy Point. I fish there. The wild grasses, the sand—it’s almost the most amazing backyard possible. The property is so small, you can’t do anything. All you have is what God gave you.

for any size home. “We provide a white-glove level of service for our clients, always wanting to be three steps ahead of any needs,” says Anthony DeVincenzo, vice president of marketing and technology at California Closets. One helpful tool in that process is the showroom’s “board library”—full-size sheets
of finishes available for hands-on browsing. “You can pull one out and see the entire sample in the true wood grain, almost like you’re sampling marble,” he says. “We want to show the beauty of our product.” The family-run, community-oriented company, which began in Patchogue 32 years ago and grew into the
industry leader, also offers a wide array of lighting options to work with any layout or size of closet. Lights in varying intensities can be activated the traditional way, using switches, or by simply opening the closet door or waving your hand in front of a sensor. Advances like these don’t just make a closet’s contents more
visible; they’re also more environmentally minded. “We try to use products that contain post-consumer recycled materials,” DeVincenzo says. “We do that for our commitment to sustainability and environmentalism, which is really important to us.” 619 Hampton Road, Southampton, 631-737-2224; californiaclosets.com

A LITTLE PIZZA HEAVEN LAURENT TOURONDEL, CHEF AND CO-OWNER OF LT BURGER, IS COOKING UP SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE WITH A NEW ITALIAN RESTAURANT.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC STRIFFLER (INTERIOR, MILKSHAKE); QUENTIN BACON (BURGER)
BY CALLIE CHUTE
LT Burger (ABOVE) is known for its milkshakes and burgers, but chef Laurent Tourondel is branching out with a new Italian concept, as well.
The high-end burger joint LT Burger is a Sag Harbor favorite for good reason. It offers up American classics with a twist—think delicious milkshakes plus an alwayschanging seasonal menu—as well as healthy alternatives like fish or vegan burgers. But LT Burger’s owners, Michael Cinque and chef Laurent Tourondel, may be putting an Italian spin on that twist with their July purchase of the popular eatery Conca d’Oro at 103 Main Street in Sag Harbor. The plans for the new space are still a bit vague, but the owners do intend to renovate it to make it brighter. “We’re not sure if we’re going to keep the name yet; it’s still up in the air,” says Tourondel. But they have settled on a cuisine, if not the precise dishes. “Gelato, pizza, good appetizers, salad,” Tourondel says. “Something very casual with quality products and local products, too. I want to create a very casual pizza place.” 62 Main St., Sag Harbor, 631899-4646; ltburger.com

“I’m not a morning person, but I try to wake up early when I’m in the Hamptons because the light is so beautiful. First thing, I pop on a pair of my Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels to reduce puffiness and wear them while making my daughter breakfast (multitasking!). We eat on our back deck by the pool. Then, I generally take a class at Tracy Anderson (903 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 631-617-5621;

After class I run and get a juice or iced mocha and then go straight to the Green Thumb (829 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 631-726-1900; greenthumb organicfarm.com). I buy all of my organic vegetables and fruits there, and if it’s a Tuesday or Thursday I get the fresh mozzarella they bring in, too. It’s always sold out by about noon. In the

afternoon we’ll play tennis at Triangle Tennis Club (411 Hampton Road, Southampton, 631-287-3052; triangle tennis.com) or lounge by our pool reading and listening to music. I try to get in an hour or two of work since I work remotely the month of August. Around 4:30 PM, we [head out] to watch the sunset—usually on Flying Point Beach (1055 Flying Point Road, Southampton, 631-725-8585). My daughter and I look for shells and build sand castles, then go out to dinner at Tutto Il Giorno (56 Nugent Road,
Southampton, 631-3773611; tuttoilgiorno.com). My daughter usually begs me take her to me.n.u (50 Jobs Lane, Southampton, 631-3773133; me-n-u.com) for a little shopping on the nights they are open late, and we’ll also stop for ice cream or gelato at Sant Ambroeus (30 N. I take the time for my nighttime skincare routine, indulging in all of the textures and scents of skyn ICELAND (skyn iceland.com) to help prep me for a restorative sleep.”
