FULL FRONTAL My fair Mayfair: This spring, the “star” venue of the first Oscars after-party, in 1929—attended by glitterati of the day such as (from left) Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Joan Crawford, William Haines, and Robert Montgomery—is reborn downtown.

SUNDAY NIGHT FEVER THE FIRST ACADEMY AWARDS CELEB-RATION—AND AFTERPARTY—WAS A JAZZY TALE OF TWO HOTELS.

In the spring of 1929, in a little burb called Hollywood, the first Academy Awards presentation, a “family-style” affair for 270 guests in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, brought out the movie industry’s movers and shakers and flappers to honor 12 honorees with that famous gold statuette (not yet nicknamed “Oscar”). After a dinner of

Consommé Célestine, Filet of Sole Sauté au Beurre, Broiled Chicken on Toast, and New String Beans farmed just down Vine Street in the endless patchwork of bean fields that then crisscrossed the city, the jazz-era luminaries du jour, including Best Actress Janet Gaynor, Best Dramatic Director Frank Borzage, and Best Comedy Director Lewis Milestone (this was the first and only

10  LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

time the Academy split the “best director” award thusly), as well as presenters Cecil B. DeMille, Mary Pickford, and performer Al Jolson, fêted and feasted late into the evening. After the awards were presented and lugubrious addresses concluded, the real party began downtown at the glamorous new Mayfair Hotel, where the white-tie-and-gown crowd kicked up their

heels in Gatsby-era abandon, silent stars chatting away over their bourbon cocktails with “talkie” upstarts such as Pickford’s stepson, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and his flashy new fiancée, chorus girlturned-It girl Joan Crawford. This spring, the Mayfair, the site of that very first Oscars after-party, is reopening after a

multimillion-dollar redesign by award-winning architect Gulla Jónsdóttir, who is paying tribute to the Hollywood opulence of yesteryear (updated with modern amenities, of course). Could the ghosts of Tinseltown’s very first titans lure Oscars-party heavyweights Graydon, Harvey, and Elton to revisit Downtown one day, once again? The envelope, please…

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

oscar, baby! For almost 90 years, there’s

been no more exciting time in LA than the season leading up to that big Industry day when the world celebrates the best of the best in moviedom. During the first Academy Awards, way back in May of 1929, the affair was a simple one, as befits the small town that Hollywood once was. In those days, everyone knew everybody, and the “family-style” banquet at the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel was an intimate gathering. In fact, our first Best Actress winner, Janet Gaynor, remarked years later that had she known how significant her award would one day become, she would have been a bit more appreciative that evening. How times change. These days, the Oscars are just the culmination of half a year of glittering foreplay: Film festivals from Toronto to Cannes to Timbuktu (well, not quite)… SAG Awards, BAFTA, the giddy-fun Golden Globes!… They all fuel a $$-and glamour-soaked engine that drives a worldwide phenomenon enjoyed today not just on big screens across small-town America, but on every phone screen and iPad from Uruguay to Ulaanbaatar. How clever were those original pioneers, Mayer, DeMille, Warner, et al., to have envisioned such a zeitgeist gone viral?

24  LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

But forget the business. What the public loves—then and now—are the stars. With all due respect to the bread-and-beurre nobility who people European mags like Hola!, the Grand Duke of Liechtenstein and the Queen of England can’t compete with good ol’ American “aristos” like Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. For nigh a century, Hollywood royalty from Gloria Swanson (she married a French marquis to make the point) to Angelina Jolie (aka the former Princess de Pitt) have commanded the world stage. It’s LA-LA land’s gift to the world order and our city’s true crowning achievement. Bravo. I must take some small credit for helping fuel the madness. Celebrity culture, from my earliest magazine days, has been my livelihood. I’ve reported on stars from Paulette Goddard (Mrs. Charlie Chaplin, Burgess Meredith, and Erich Maria Remarque, in that order!) and Michelle Pfeiffer (never forget hanging with her one surreal, sunny day in Malibu) to Yale classmate Jodie Foster, second cousin Richard Gere, and Brit/It fun gal Kate Beckinsale, our cover star last year, who bonded with me over our love of Jane Austen and, well, nicotine. Oscar for Kate B. one day? You bet. As exciting as Tinseltown is today, I’m famously a fan of old Hollywood. I have a

collection of 200-plus classic movies in my library, and, way back when, coauthored The Variety History of Show Business. How I would have loved to have been a gadfly on the wall of those very first Oscars back in ’29, watching queen Mary Pickford schmooze Paramount king Adolph Zukor; princess-in-waiting Joan Crawford, Pickford’s soon-to-be daughter-in-law, kick up a Charleston with Buddy Rogers (Pickford’s next husband, in fact); and silent film prince John Gilbert squeaking away in his not-so-talkie-ready voice with court jester/“jazz singer” Al Jolson. Which reminds me. During a luncheon at the Peninsula hotel last year, Ms. Beckinsale and I chatted about starting a series of classic movie nights up at Soho House in West Hollywood. We were drinking, of course—me Scotch, she tea. Gotta circle back on that. Could it be in the stars? Well, it’s Hollywood… Why not? Cheers,

And the winner is... from left: Jump-starting awards season madness with presenter Mark Wahlberg at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards; doing the rad carpet with artist/ bad boy Zachary Crane at the Golden Globes; getting down and dharma with hip hop mogul/guru Russell Simmons at his new WeHo boutique/yoga studio, Tantris.

‘The most enduring legacies a r e b o r n o f t h e m o s t c o l o u r f u l l i ve s ’

A LIFE IN COLOUR

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

los angeles, ready for her close up!

In this, our annual Oscars issue, it’s unusual for us to play favorites with any individual film, especially in a year with an exceptional lineup of well-vetted and worthy contenders for the Best Picture category. Still, one film above all others has continued to pull at my heartstrings. Since opening the Venice Film Festival last August, Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, has charmed critics and audiences alike, and has already been honored with a record seven Golden Globe Awards, eight Critics’ Choice Awards, and 14 Academy Award nominations, tied for the most in Oscars history. On November 6 last year, Los Angeles Confidential was one of the first to celebrate the film at our biannual Hamilton Behind The Camera Awards by honoring upstart musical talent Justin Hurwitz as “Composer of the Year” for his role in the production. Creating a modern-day musical was seemingly a risky venture, but Whiplash (2014) director Chazelle’s ode to classic Hollywood and the City of Angels is pure magic. The central “meet cute” plot (as we say in the Industry!) may just turn out to be one of the best love letters Los Angeles has ever known. Shot and edited entirely in LA, La La Land features 60 locations around the city in a swoon-

26  LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

worthy, toe-tapping, sing-along, feel-good dreamscape that showcases our city like no other movie in recent memory. Our hometown has of course been prominently featured in feature films since the golden age of Hollywood, as far back as Sunset Boulevard and Singin’ in the Rain—however, La La Land’s ethereal portrayal captures the most civilized and genteel snapshots of our fair city. Epic atmospheric renderings even make our traffic jams seem romantic, as filmed on the 105 and 110 interchange over the course of two days. The sprawling backdrops of Mt. Hollywood Drive and the Griffith Park Observatory, the Watts Towers and the Hermosa Beach Pier, remind us of something we all know intrinsically, which is that LA is one of the most amazing and diverse cities in the world! Bravo to Lionsgate on such a magnificent work of art, and congratulations to all nominees in one of the best movie seasons in recent years. As the film’s lyrics say, “City of stars, are you shining just for me?” In this case, they surely are. Cheers,

LE TOUT H’WOOD PARTIES HARD AFTER THE GOLDEN GLOBES.

For the win! Actresses Viola Davis (left) and Tracee Ellis Ross show off their hard-won hardware: Davis won Best Supporting Actress for her work in the movie Fences, while Ross took home the TV honors, as Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, for Black-ish.

Last month, when the cameras stopped rolling and Jimmy Fallon left the stage at The Beverly Hilton, the real fun began! Hollywood came out en masse to celebrate the 74th Golden Globe Awards, and most stars stuck around post-taping to stop by the slew of invite-only after-parties. For HBO, there was much to celebrate at the Circa 55 Restaurant with a head-turning amount of nominations—14 in total. Not to be outdone, NBC Universal held their event in an extravagantly decorated tent atop the parking-garage rooftop. The collaboration between Warner Brothers and InStyle drew upon the imaginative genius of designer and nominee Tom Ford, who created the interior design, while Amazon commandeered the Stardust Ballroom with its very first Golden Globe event.

AFI FEST Los Angeles Confidential was a media sponsor for the annual AFI Fest, which took over Hollywood to celebrate more than 100 films (features and shorts) from 46 countries. Each year, AFI, presented by Audi, jumpstarts awards season madness by touting the year’s most culturally and artistically significant films. The week-long event, recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences as a qualifying festival for both of the Oscars’ Short Film categories, featured screenings (and even first runs) of some of the year’s most lauded productions, including Moonlight, La La Land, and Manchester by the Sea. Also staged were tributes to Annette Bening and Isabelle Huppert and an Indie Contenders Roundtable with panelists Kate Beckinsale, Sally Field, Viggo Morensen, and more.

TRANSCENDENTAL ASPIRATION IS MUSIC MOGUL/BRAND MASTER RUSSELL SIMMONS HOLLYWOOD’S COOLEST LIFESTYLE GURU? BY SPENCER BECK

Russell Simmons is a man on a mission. An eastern mission. When the 59-yearold hip-hop mogul-turnedenlightened yogi is asked if he has ever been to India, the response is curt: “You don’t need to go to India to meditate… You just close your eyes.” In fact, one needn’t travel beyond West Hollywood, where Simmons’s spanking new yoga studio-cum-clothing boutique, Tantris, seeks the enlightened Angeleno who is more interested in a

higher truth than a run-ofthe-LA-mill “yoga butt.” “We are not ‘power yoga’!” Simmons, a dedicated vegan, insists between forkfuls of spaghetti with “extra-extra” spinach (“hold the lobster”) during lunch at private club Soho House West Hollywood, which shares the same building as the master’s 8,000-square-foot studio. “I do yoga every day for at least an hour… It’s devotional yoga, not just a workout. Life’s goal is yoga.”

Back in the studio, Simmons, dressed in a preppy button-down shirt, sweater, his trademark cap, and prayer beads, demonstrates some stretches that would challenge kids half his age and brags that his vegan/yoga lifestyle has brought him increased wealth, happiness, and good health. “I haven’t had a cold in seven years. You can’t get sick if you don’t eat meat and dairy.” It’s hard to argue with a multimillionaire multi-

I WANT TO CHANGE YOGA… AND REVOLUTIONIZE FASHION.” —RUSSELL SIMMONS hyphenate who seems oddly centered amidst the swirl of constant phone calls, text messages, and InstaSnap moments during the course of the afternoon. That’s not to say that Simmons is complacent. He’s still looking for yoga teachers who meet his strict requirements (“I quiz them on the ‘Yoga Sutras of Patanjali,’ and they must be vegan”), and he’s anxious to expand his upscale activewear/athleisure line sold in the first-floor boutique (i.e.

QUINTESSENTIAL N.Y. DESIGNER JONATHAN SI HAI LOOKS WEST FOR HIS TOWERING SPRING COLLECTION. BY LISA FERRANDINO

“I design for strong, fearless women who want to look modern, romantic, and powerful,” says fashion darling Jonathan Simkhai. While the born-and-bred New Yorker’s idea of the “Jonathan Simkhai woman” was always well formed—even when he first released his eponymous high fashion line, in 2010—two new collections suggest his muse is now trying on some West Coast flair. With an uber-cool collab with online activewear emporium Carbon38, Simkhai, 32, dives into the athleisure phenomenon that’s taken SoCal by storm. Standouts like a one-piece with open lacing and wide-leg snap-up pants make the 16-piece capsule collection perfect for the modern Cali gal on the move. But the Parsons and FIT alum also debuts a spring collection that draws from and references LA directly—more specifically, the Watts Towers. “I find their monumentality and lightness to be inspiring,” says Simkhai of the Central LA spires adorned with mosaics of broken glass and pottery. “The [collection’s] beading and latticework is reminiscent of the patterns on the surface of the structures,” he adds, pointing to the ultra-femme silk dresses, including a twisted-rope embroidered gown that “really encapsulates the spirit and design of the Towers.” It’s no wonder the designer’s favorite piece from the collection is also the most LA-lustworthy: a mirror cutout sleeve blouse with matching shorts he says is “undeniably chic, effortless—and very LA.” Swoon! MIDEAST MEETS WEST THE LATEST FOODIE CRAZE? L.A.’S TOP CHEFS BRING THE CUISINES OF ONE DESERT TO ANOTHER. BY KATHRYN ROMEYN

Thanks to a spate of buzzy chefs—some with traditional family recipes in their apron pockets—the exquisite flavors indigenous to Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, and Morocco are LA’s hottest food trend. Already anticipated for this year: Bestia chef Ori Menashe’s as-yet-unnamed

DTLA tribute to Israel, where he was raised, and the Alex Chang-helmed Exchange, inside the Freehand hotel (freehand hotels.com/los-angeles/ the-exchange), which will showcase the flavors of urban LA through an Israeli lens. Last year, Soho House’s

Nava (sohohousewh.com/ food-and-drink) became the brand’s first Middle Eastern concept, blending the tastes of Jerusalem and Beirut (fattoush, tabbouleh, lamb kofta) via locally sourced produce. And Lebanese chef Yousef Ghalaini was quick to recognize LA’s eagerness to sample flavors

from his youth when he revamped the Fairmont Santa Monica’s FIG (figsantamonica.com), which offers mainstays like lamb shank with pomegranate molasses and a za’atardusted bread “balloon” with dips, plus seasonal highlights—for spring, manouche flatbreads are

baked in the wood-burning oven before being finished with spring peas and tendrils, cured Meyer lemon, halloumi, and za’atar. “I think what drives the conversation is that all this ethnic food fits into [SoCal] health trends,” says Ghalaini. “Gluten-free,

vegetarian, seasonal.” Another boon is that produce at the heart of Middle Eastern cuisines grows readily in LA: In the city’s farmers’ markets, eggplant—a staple of Persian, Lebanese, Egyptian, and Iraqi dishes—is on the rise in varying heirloom shades and shapes, and previously obscure purslane now holds pride of place alongside arugula and spinach. The latest additions to the scene are courtesy of familiar names like Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo (Animal, Trois Mec), operational partners in brand-new Los Feliz restaurant Kismet (kismetla.com). The 45-seat concept, by chefs Sara Kramer and Sarah Hymanson of Grand Central Market falafel joint Madcapra (madcapra.com), takes major inspiration from the region’s cooking in terms of flavor and vibrancy. The breakfast, lunch, and dinner plates are meant to be shared and eaten with the hands. And in January, LA restaurateur George Abou-Daoud—who owns Silver Lake’s modern Middle Eastern eatery Bowery Bungalow (bowerybungalow.com)— debuted Farida (farida restaurant.com), named for his grandmother. At the new Sunset Boulevard restaurant, he’s elevating Middle Eastern ingredients with unconventional spins on tradition, such as

pairing spicy, Puerto Rican tostones with green harissa and labneh, and Palestinian chicken musakhan with sumaccaramelized onions, pine nuts, and flatbread. Says Abou-Daoud, “I want to better people’s perception of what Middle Eastern cuisine really is. Food expresses culture, and it’s the best way we all connect.” Amen and amin to that.

.

Eastside story: From the restaurateurs of Animal and Trois Mec comes Kismet, a Los Feliz Middle Eastern resto where the chefs behind Grand Central Market’s best falafel present fresh, straightforward fare, such as fried cauliflower with caper-studded yogurt.

Inside Santa Monica’s Fairmont Miramar, FIG (inset above center) serves up the glutenfree, veg-driven fare that “fits into SoCal health trends,” says Yemeni chef Yousef Ghalaini, alongside heartier dishes such as a grilled grass-fed lamb shank with heirloom carrots (top). above: The Rizzo Fizz, a popular brunch cocktail, with gin, lemon, rhubarb bitters, and strawberry.

MEET THE VISIONARY QUEEN OF L.A.’S HOTTEST REAL ESTATE MARKET. BY ALEXANDRIA ABRAMIAN

The light-filled, $5.61 million Milwood Avenue compound Gordon designed and built for Real Housewife of Dallas Stephanie Hollman features an open-plan kitchen and unexpected “embellishments” like a glow-in-the-dark riff on American Gothic by artist Mike Callas (RIGHT).

While Venice Beach real estate is now beating Beverly Hills and Bel-Air in per-square-foot prices, the community has its own code of cool when it comes to architecture. Here, in the hood celebrities like Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke and Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel call home, cookie-cutter compounds need not apply. And perhaps no one translates the city’s penchant for one-of-a-kind style into walls and windows better than designerbuilder Kim Gordon. The longtime local resident has quietly become the area’s go-to guru of luxury-loving homes that still channel the area’s bohemian roots and preference for the handmade over mass-produced. “The idea of California design became a bit stuck in the Midcentury aesthetic,” says Gordon. “This is home to SciArc, after all, and we’ve seen an abundance of houses with a certain feeling. Flat roofs, wood on the ceiling, no closets, low ceilings… zero drama. I want homes to feel sophisticated and grown-up, and at the same time to capture a feeling that is quintessentially Californian. I also like to live indoors and outdoors and explore materials and texture—to add embellishment but not in a traditional way. So I started to design and build them [myself]. Luckily, other people appreciated and wanted the same things.” In the past three years, Gordon has completed half a dozen residences in her usual manner: overseeing the entire process,

“I like to live indoors and outdoors,” says Kim Gordon, whose homes include upper-floor decks designed to catch Venice sunsets. LEFT: A Google exec purchased Gordon’s Belgian farmhouse–inspired Nowita Place home for $4 million, a neighborhood record for walking-only streets.

Another of Kim Gordon’s (right) Milwood Avenue projects was snapped up by Grammy Award–winning music producers Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Eriksen after just 16 hours on the market. Indoor/outdoor integration is a hallmark of the 3,500-square-foot residence (below), which also makes efficient use of small spaces (here).

“I WANT HOMES TO FEEL SOPHISTICATED AND GROWN-UP AND TO CAPTURE A FEELING THAT IS QUINTESSENTIALLY CALIFORNIAN. BUT I ALSO LIKE EMBELLISHMENT!”—kim gordon

from materials collection and construction to the smallest details of the interior design. And while her style varies from home to home—some feel more like a modern take on a Belgian farmhouse while others are more evocative of Big Sur by way of SoCal beach—the through-lines are consistent: soaring, steelframed glass walls, total indoor/ outdoor integration, and no shortage of drama. Each house has sold for above its asking price—snapped up by a Silicon Beach power list of Google executives (one recently purchased a home on a coveted walk street for $4 million) and creatives such as music industry exec Neil Jacobson (will.i.am, Fergie, Robin Thicke), who had purchased another Kim Gordon home on the same street in 2012 and sold it last year for $6.1 million. More recently, Gordon completed a farmhouse-style home on Milwood Avenue, down the street from hipster haven Gjelina. The buyers were Grammy-winning Norwegian producers Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Eriksen (the duo behind hits such as Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” and Katy Perry’s “Firework”), who purchased the four-bedroom residence for significantly more than its $5 million price tag. STYLE WATCH THE WORLD’S FINEST WATCHMAKERS USE SPRINGTIME AS OCCASION TO EXPRESS THEIR ARTISTIC SKILL IN PIECES THAT CELEBRATE COLOR AND HIGH STYLE.

COLOR ME SPRINGTIME! AS BUDS BURST AND NATURE BLOSSOMS, HOROLOGISTS OFFER A RIOT OF COLOR IN TIMEPIECES THAT BLOOM ON THE WRIST. BY ALDOUS TUCK

“April… hath put a spirit of youth in everything,” wrote William Shakespeare in “Sonnet 98.” Indeed, the boundless energy of nature’s rebirth has been an inspiration for artists since the beginning of time. And like the Bard, some of the world’s finest watchmakers use springtime as occasion to express their artistic skill in pieces that celebrate color and high style on the outside and engineering excellence on the inside. Shimmering precious metals, mother-ofpearl accents, and dazzling gemstones enhance the hues of the season. These creations may measure time, but like a beautifully turned sonnet, their appeal is timeless. SCENE ART

The single life! Amidst their spring programs, three of LA’s premier arts institutions are drawing in the crowds with one work each (from top): Degas’s Russian Dancers at The Getty, van Gogh’s The Bedroom at Norton Simon, and Rembrandt’s Juno at the Hammer.

ONE-HIT WONDERS FORGET WHOLE EXHIBITIONS. THIS SPRING, SINGLE OLD-WORLD MASTERPIECES STEAL THE ARTS SPOTLIGHT. BY MURAT OZTASKIN

While LA’s revered arts institutions constantly call in pieces on loan to launch their mega-caliber exhibitions and group shows, three individual masterworks on view this spring have the city’s art elite thinking in singles. Through March 6, Vincent van Gogh’s The Bedroom (1889) takes pride of place at Norton Simon Museum (411 W. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, 626-

449-6840; nortonsimon .org), on loan from The Art Institute of Chicago. A kind of figureless selfportrait, painted while the artist was in asylum in southern France, the masterpiece communicates the Dutchman’s harrowing despair and “allows for a remarkable conversation with” other van Goghs in the museum’s collection, says chief curator Carol Togneri.

62  LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

This is the first time The Bedroom has been on view on the West Coast. Across town, a first gives way to a “second,” as Edgar Degas’s Russian Dancers (c. 1899) returns to The Getty (1200 Getty Center Dr., LA, 310-44007330; getty.edu) through May 7, on loan from a private collection. The centerpiece of a popular repeat exhibition exploring Degas’s use of pastels

(the first, in 2015, featured different accompanying images), Russian Dancers allows Angelenos to celebrate the rich colors and exuberant abandon of the artist’s work in this medium. As The Getty enjoys its loan, it returns another: Rembrandt’s Juno (c. 1662–1665), which went on loan from the Hammer Museum (10899 Wilshire Blvd., LA, 310-443-7000; hammer.ucla.edu) last fall

during the renovation of its permanent collection galleries. Now the latecareer masterpiece, which displays the éclat of Rembrandt’s final-years technique, has returned to its home, featured prominently amidst 100plus other works in the new Armand Hammer Collection gallery. At the always-avant-garde Hammer, old school is new again.

DON’T LABEL THIS A BRIT-BORN ONLINE POWERHOUSE PLANS TO DISRUPT FASHION IN L.A. BY SPENCER BECK

Not Just a Label’s founder and CEO, Stefan Siegel, is a fashionista for the future. The Tyrol-born online style impresario is bringing his pioneering fashion label from East London west to LA. With a bang. “The US is now the strongest market for NJAL, and establishing a permanent presence within the American fashion system was a clear next step,” says Siegel. The 38-year-old knows a thing or two about global business. Founded in 2008, NJAL today represents more than 24,000 emerging designers from the UK and Ukraine to Uruguay and the UAE. Not to mention the USA. Fostering future fashion superstars by helping them gain exposure and finance their progression independently, Siegel’s brainchild already has a red-carpet following of celebrities and tastemakers who seek out the latest designers and trends that can’t be found anywhere else. Here in LA, which has an unmatched manufacturing legacy and a forward-thinking fashion buyer, even the Mayor sees the boon. “Not Just a Label will play an important role in the effort to shift from fast fashion to sustainability,” says Mayor Eric Garcetti. “It will be an excellent destination for people to experience fashion and its impact.” Of the growing number of talented homegrown Angeleno designers in NJAL’s cutting-edge style stable, four of the most fashionforward from the company’s “Black Sheep” collection are red-carpetready-to-go this spring: Breelayne Carter, Olya Kosterina, Phlemuns (aka James Flemons), and Valerj Pobega. Age: 25

Why LA (as opposed to NY)? I grew up in Malibu Canyon, so it just made sense. I studied briefly at Pratt, in Brooklyn, but the lifestyle was brutal—too much stimulus! LA has a focus on being conscious of the environment, and we approach our companies as more of a lifestyle—there’s an ease and flexibility to it.

OLYA KOSTERINA

Age: 28 I love LA because… There is always something new and exciting waiting for you tomorrow. And everything just works so well— things are done on time and with love. What’s new for spring? I’m expanding into new denim

What’s new for spring? Spring is about not being afraid to be you. There is an elegant take on athleisure throughout. I’m obsessed with our crêpeback satin track suits: a must-have. This being Oscars time, what celebrity would you love to dress? Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o, or Emma

Watson! But there are many women I respect in the Industry, especially since acting is my other love. Style is… To roll out of bed, throw on a jacket with some jeans, and be totally killing it. I don’t like to try too hard. Favorite secret place to hang out in LA: Honestly, my house in Los Feliz—but if I go out for a

bite, Croft Alley (my friend’s hidden gem on Melrose). What’s next? We’re searching for how to be even more environmentally conscious. Currently we plant a tree for every purchase made in association with the National Forest Foundation. We are also expanding with a wider range of accessories! notjustalabel.com/breelayne

horizons with fresh finishes and silhouettes—like Japanese selvage denim, or a denim gown fully distressed to its bones. Style vs. fashion: If all people who had style, in its classic meaning, were dictating fashion—the world would definitely be better dressed. With unlimited resources, what would you do? Open a creative center where craftsmen, young and old, work together to promote professions that are losing popularity—tailoring, embroidery, etc. A place to explore old and new techniques. All under one big roof. Also a shelter for homeless animals in my hometown of Yaroslavl, Russia! notjustalabel.com/ olya-kosterina

In the last five years, a lot of people from New York and Europe have moved to the city—it’s changed the urban landscape and the way we dress. It’s created a unique fusion of styles. If you hadn’t done fashion, what other career would you have chosen? Music! It’s been my main

aka James Flemons Age: 28 How has Hollywood influenced you? Being in LA, surrounded by celebrity culture, has definitely gotten our brand exposure—and gotten my clothes on celebrity bodies! What’s new for spring? I’m getting into statement hats and track pants—a little fun for casual dressing. What’s your favorite “secret” place in LA? Cactus Taqueria on Vine Street off of Santa Monica, in Hollywood. It’s my favorite Mexican food in the entire city. What do you find sexy? I think having a good sense of humor, not taking yourself too seriously. Living for comic relief is very sexy. How important is social media in your life? Without it, struggling, emerging brands like mine would have no outlet for exposure. What’s the future of fashion? People are starting to want to go back to artistry, longevity. STYLE TASTEMAKER

MIX MASTER WITH A CONFIDENT, PRINT-CENTRIC SPRING COLLECTION, JONATHAN SAUNDERS DEBUTS AS DVF’S FIRST-EVER CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER.

“Printed textiles were always something I loved, so there is a definite synergy,” says Jonathan Saunders of his interpretation of the iconic DVF brand. LEFT, FROM TOP: Circle shoulder handbag, Diane von Furstenberg ($298); colorful details from the Spring/Summer 2017 collection.

The name Diane von Furstenberg evokes a rush of unique attributes: femininity, empowerment, confidence, grace. It also conjures New York itself. So when designer Jonathan Saunders presented his first collection for the iconic brand for Spring/Summer 2017, many wondered how a man from Scotland might interpret the vision of a cosmopolitan woman. The answer, it turns out, is quite successfully. “I saw it straight away— that effortless sense of ease, femininity without being too girly or frou-frou, sensuality, and a provocative nature,” says Saunders, 39, who built his name in London with his eponymous, print-heavy collection (which shuttered in late 2015 after 12 years in business), and who is now Diane von Furstenberg’s first creative head not named Diane von Furstenberg. “Textiles, and printed textiles in general, were always something I loved, so there is a definite synergy between what I stand for and what the brand stands for.”

Saunders’s bold mix of patterns is apparent in this dress ($698) and origami belt ($178) from his new collection.

“I SAW [THE DVF HERITAGE] STRAIGHT AWAY— THAT EFFORTLESS EASE, FEMININITY, SENSUALITY, A PROVOCATIVE NATURE.” —jonathan saunders Midi dress ($498) and hammered-gold earring ($168). right: Scarf-hem tiered dress ($598), belt ($178), Steamer handbag ($798), and Laredo heels ($378).

As von Furstenberg herself steps away from designing to focus more on her philanthropic work, Saunders has segued with ease into the newly created role of chief creative officer. With about three months to present his first collection—which features original Saunders prints—there wasn’t much time to sweat the small stuff. “It was definitely a baptism by fire,” he says. “But there was such goodwill and belief within the team about what I wanted to do, which enabled me to go in with the velocity that was required to put a collection together within that period of time.” That velocity-driven result is a lively, eclectic mix of printed separates, including bold, wide-legged trousers, structured outerwear, flowing skirts, versatile shifts, and, yes, wrap dresses that stay true to the brand’s DNA. Printed silks and cottons—from an eye-catching Sakura blossom pattern to more graphic stripes and color blocking—create an overall sense of playful fluidity. Unsurprisingly, Saunders says he turned to dancers and choreographers such as Michael Clark and Pina Bausch when conjuring up the new silhouettes, noting, “Dancers are incredible examples of body movement and sensuality.” And while DVF devotees will appreciate Saunders’s respect for the label’s heritage, he didn’t shy away from threading his own point of view throughout. One wrap-style dress in particular manages to combine a mixture of seemingly every print in the collection—a testament to his willingness to venture into unexpected territory. “When Diane started the brand, it was about effortless clothes, but also interesting clothes. These weren’t simple, retiring dresses—they were bold, bright dresses that happen to have a sense of ease,” he says. “That still feels really relevant today.” The

Recording artist, political activist, and now in-demand actress: The supercharged Janelle Monáe lights up Hollywood in not one but two Best Picture noms. BY MURAT OZTASKIN

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY DURAN

anelle Monáe, the music sensation turned actress who stars in awards-season heavyweights Moonlight and Hidden Figures, almost got her Hollywood start in space. “I don’t know if a lot of people know this,” she says, “but I auditioned for Star Trek prior to Moonlight. The casting director saw my tape and told [Moonlight director] Barry Jenkins about me. I didn’t get the part in Star Trek, but that’s why Barry reached out to me. And the rest is history.” Once a Hollywood rejection, Monáe can now count her very first films as two of 2016’s best. Talk about an entrance. While the 31-year-old originally wanted her film debut to be in science fiction—her music reflects sci-fi inspirations, and her Metropolis album series is named after Fritz Lang’s 1927 cinema masterpiece—it’s fitting that an artist who’s spent the last decade writing and performing messages of self-love, inclusion, and equality would find her Hollywood start in projects confronting civil rights: Moonlight, which took home the Golden Globe for best drama, follows the maturation of a black boy into adulthood as he tries to reconcile his harsh, masculine surroundings with the secret shame of his homosexuality; Hidden Figures spotlights three black women whose work at a racially segregated NASA, in the Jim Crow South, allowed the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth, in 1962. “I love telling these sorts of stories that give voice to those who are oftentimes uncelebrated, to those who don’t feel like they have a voice in America,” says Monáe of the characters central to both films— Moonlight’s Chiron, whom Monáe’s Teresa supports as a mother figure, and Hidden Figures’ Katherine Johnson, played by Taraji P. Henson; Octavia Spencer’s Dorothy Vaughn; and the high-voltage Mary Jackson, Monáe’s first starring film role. “These are characters who are considered to be outcast in society because of their sexual identity, gender, or race,” she says. “I think that these two movies have opened up a new door to the possibilities of telling more unique stories.” Transferring the values she espouses in her music to the silver screen is an immense source of pride for Monáe. “I say this with so much

J

humility, but I’m also saying this so loud, because I never thought that I would see the day where three African American female protagonists are in a film about math and space and we’d be number one in the box office. We beat out Star Wars!” she says, referring to the Felicity Jones– fronted Rogue One, the latest in that other storied sci-fi franchise. “The people have spoken, and we’re all waiting for stories that transcend race and gender and all that. The world is ever-changing, and Hollywood is just going to have to adapt.” Besides, she adds, “Hidden Figures is the original space movie.” onáe knows a thing or two about rising up. She was born in Kansas City, Kansas, in one of the state’s poorest counties—where some 22 percent of the population lives in poverty (the national average is 13.5 percent), including one-quarter of children—as the eldest of three sisters. (Although, she says, “Sometimes they’re the oldest. It just depends on what mood we’re in.”) Her mother, who left school early to give birth to Monáe, worked as a janitor. Her father drove a garbage truck. The weight of an underprivileged childhood was counterbalanced by Monáe’s large and supportive family, which includes more than 50 first cousins. At home, an early knack for performance was nourished, and she enrolled in after-school Shakespeare classes and performed in school plays. “I grew up navigating through both [music and acting]. It was a cappella choir, religious talent showcases, then it was writing short stories for the Coterie Theatre and being involved in middle school and high school theatrical productions,” she says. “My family was the first to help build my self-esteem and confidence as a performer. They were at all the musicals and all my plays encouraging me. They are just my biggest champions.” After high school, Monáe worked alongside her mother as a maid, raising the money to go to New York and study acting. But once she got to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, in Manhattan, she began to feel like “the other.” Sensing her creativity stifled, she left the

conservatory after a few semesters and moved to Atlanta, Georgia. In an unlikely, Hollywood twist, it was not in a New York performing arts school but at an Atlanta Office Depot where Monáe’s talents were discovered. Living in a boarding house with a half-dozen other girls, and often performing spontaneous shows on the library steps of Morehouse College, Monáe would spend parts of her shift at Office Depot updating her MySpace musical profile on the showroom’s computers. As a result, she attracted the attention of hometown hip-hop hero Big Boi, of the Atlanta duo OutKast, who, after a few collaborations, introduced her to Sean “Diddy” Combs, in 2006. Combs offered her a record contract, and just in time—the MySpace antics had gotten her fired from Office Depot. Her debut EP, Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase), was released the following year. Combs agreed to never interfere with the creative control of her work, a rare luxury for the recording industry, but a condition paramount to Monáe. She had been exercising that control already at her “creative nucleus,” the Wondaland Arts Society, a collective of musicians, actors, and visual artists that Monáe put together shortly after moving to Atlanta, and which has subsequently established an eponymous record company and a film studio called Emotion Pictures. Despite often flying between New York and LA—“I’m never in one spot mentally”— Monáe still calls Atlanta home. “It gives me balance, and a reconnection to my creative thoughts,” she says. “But I love Los Angeles. I can go to LA and be inspired and recharged and excited about the future.” Having traveled to the city often for her music—not least for six Grammy Award nominations—she’s had even more reason to be on the red carpet lately, what with Moonlight and Hidden Figures lapping up awards at the Golden Globes, the People’s Choice Awards, and the SAG Awards. She’ll be back in town shortly for the Oscars, where Moonlight and Hidden Figures are both up for Best Picture. After the ceremonies, Monáe typically grabs her friends and heads to Hot N Juicy Crawfish, a locals’ favorite seafood spot in a mall on the corner of La Brea and Santa Monica—and a place that feels a world away from the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood spotlight. “Like, I’m literally in a ball gown, a custom black-and-white ball gown, straight from the People’s Choice Awards or the Golden Globes,” she says. “And I go into this place, sit down, put on a bib, and eat. And that’s what I love about LA, that you can come straight from a red carpet event and go to a place like that.” Her style—mostly black and white, often some tuxedo-like ensemble—has made Monáe a fixture on the red carpet. But the pomp and circumstance doesn’t always come easily. With cameras and interviewers

in her face, “I just try to remain humble, remain myself,” she says. “Early on in my career I decided I was going to wear black and white, a kind of uniform, to honor and pay homage to my working-class parents,” who wore uniforms every day to work. “I’m so proud to be from Wyandotte County, one of the poorest counties in Kansas. I’m so happy that I serve as a reminder of that. You know, there is a quote that says you don’t have to be a part of your environment, but your environment can be a part of you,” she adds. “I’m in Hollywood but I’m not of it. I love just remaining an artist.”

I

t’s a duality—being in and out—that also extends to politics. Monáe, who has always remained vague about her personal life (“I only date androids,” she once told Rolling Stone), finds herself at home in a Hollywood increasingly outspoken about inclusion and equality, messages she’s been championing in her music for years, and which echo in her Moonlight and Hidden Figures performances. “I want to bring people together, and now that I have your attention, I think it is important to use every ounce of whatever platform you can to remind us all, remind each other, that it’s about a shared humanity,” says Monáe, who has led Black Lives Matter protests. “We need art and we need music to uplift us and to remind us that we all bleed the same color. If we’re going to coexist in this world, it’s going to be important that we just keep that in perspective.” To support those coming behind her, and to “really pay it forward,” Monáe will be spending much of the year focusing on her new women’s organization, Fem the Future, which provides mentorship opportunities for young women interested in the arts by pairing them up with Monáe’s A-list friends. “It’s a grassroots-led movement by millennials who want to help advance opportunities and careers for more young women in music and film and TV and media,” says Monáe. The organization’s inaugural event took place during the Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn last year, where Monáe delivered an impassioned speech about the importance of unity. Later this year, Fem the Future will stage its first conference—“like Lilith Fair meets SXSW”—which will feature seminars and performances. “We need to allow our collective voices to be heard as one. I think what we see in this election should be a reminder that women are stronger together,” says Monáe, who performed at the Women’s March on Washington in January. “An injustice done to my sister or my brother is one done to me.” Whether with film, music, fashion, or politics, she says, “I’m always going to choose freedom over fear.”

“I FEEL SO HONORED TO HAVE HAD SUCH DYNAMIC COSTARS. TARAJI P. HENSON AND OCTAVIA SPENCER WERE SO EXCITED THAT I WAS A PART OF THIS FILM, WHICH GAVE ME SO MUCH CONFIDENCE.” —janelle monáe

Oscar time in LA sees plenty of stars glittering in the limelight. But downtown, one luminary out-blazes the others: Gustavo Dudamel. The 36-year-old wunderkind-turnedlegendary symphonic conductor grew up in the urban sprawl of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, graduated from that country’s innovative El Sistema musical education program, and, en route to his current home, managed to successfully invigorate the sometimes staid world of classical music. For now, he is delivering high notes and high praise as musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the seventh season running. 2017 will see him perform in Barcelona, Hamburg, Vienna… and back home in Los Angeles, where his star power shines all year.

AND FINALLY...

HOLLYWOOD AND DIVINE A PRINCESS WAS BORN AND DIED IN LA LA LAND. AND MADE US LAUGH... AND THINK... ALONG THE WAY.

It was Carrie Fisher we always wanted to watch the Oscars with because it was Carrie Fisher who managed, simultaneously, to care deeply about Hollywood while at the same time not really caring too much at all. That was her secret. As one might regard one’s own

family—or Carrie Fisher’s famous family—as equal parts revolting and inviolable, midway on the spectrum of human dignity that spans John Waters and Tolstoy, we ought to regard the Oscar enterprise and all it entails with Fisher’s brand of play. In so much of what

112  LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM

she wrote and said, she seemed to convey, I know Hollywood is only a game, but it’s a game I love, a necessary attitude to adopt if one is to survive the movie business with any kind of well-being. That’s not a word typically associated with Fisher, but take a look at

any one of her interviews and you’ll find she was, like Yossarian in Catch-22, wholly underrated in the sanity department, laughing up deep reserves of revulsion and amusement, Stage Manager emeritus of our Our Town, and making a lot of sense. But don’t kid yourself; if Carrie made

sense, it was only because she pointed out where her world, Hollywood, didn’t. And so, while some may comfort themselves thinking it was right, somehow, that one day after Fisher died, her mother followed, I never will. It makes absolutely no sense to me.
