When the movies blew into Hollywood in the early 1910s, there was a post office, a couple of markets, two hotels, and nary a theater of any kind (ironically, a city ordinance restricted that). A decade later, the film biz firmly entrenched, Hollywood was fairly awash in tinsel. Prospect Avenue had been renamed Hollywood Boulevard, and on May 15,

and May 18, 1927, two of the town’s most iconic structures debuted to much fanfare along that previously dusty lane. The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, which would host the first Academy Awards exactly two years later, quickly became the stomping ground of moviedom’s swell set. Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, right across the

street, premiered with Cecil B. DeMille’s Christian epic King of Kings, which no doubt helped to quell the town’s theater-hating Methodist founding fathers. This spring, 90 years later, these Hollywood warhorses, both of which have undergone more facelifts than a Beverly Hills housewife, are glittering again. Not to be overshadowed, Hollywood’s third
most celebrated landmark, the Capitol Records building, is hosting the 75th anniversary of the worldfamous music company, the first to put down roots on the West Coast, with a year-long series of tributes and parties. Of course, times have changed. When Clark Gable and Carole Lombard first stayed in the penthouse of the
Hollywood Roosevelt, it cost them five dollars a night. A movie ticket was 25 cents. And Frank Sinatra smoked unfiltered Camels while he recorded in Capitol Records’ legendary studios. Want to live it up today? The movie ticket and suite will cost you $6,021.75. The Camels, about six bucks. And make sure you take the latter outside.

women rock ’n’ rule! Haven’t they always? Welcome to our annual Women’s Issue, where we shine a spotlight on a few of the players that make LA/Hollywood tick, from cover star Neve Campbell (House of Cards) and powerhouse producer Dany Garcia (Baywatch, the movie) to fashionista/ philanthropist Elisabeth Weinstock and leading lady/funny gal Ari Graynor, who brings the iconic LA comedy scene of the 1970s to hilarious life in the buzzy new Showtime series I’m Dying Up Here, produced by Jim Carrey. At this magazine, it’s not only the women on our pages who inspire us but the leading ladies who work their magic behind the scenes. Once a year, it’s my pleasure to lift the veil and call out a few of the dames who daily rock my world. And, yes, rule… Here in LA, our publisher Alison Miller is a tall, brunette force to be reckoned with. For five years, we’ve butted heads ever-soslightly, laughed ever-so-muchly, and, in the end, joined up to fashion a fun, fast, and furious magazine romp through this great city of ours. In my 30-plus years of collab-ing with biz-whiz publishers, Alison is perhaps the smartest. She is filled with good ideas, appreciates quality editorial—and writes her own pub notes (not always the case!). She also throws a GREAT party. Good office wife to have. By her side is associate publisher Valerie Robles, a long-time colleague and dear friend, for whom no task is too daunting. She just “gets” it. It’s a great team. We are also blessed in LA with the extraordinary talent of our VP of creative and fashion, Ann Song, with whom I’ve been working for 13 years. She’s my other office wife. Mormon thing here.) Hardworking (does Ann ever sleep?) and maddeningly detail-obsessed (we share that), Ann is famous for her integrity when it comes to pictures, layouts, art, and fashion. She is no “girl next door.” If it’s not the best it can be, you better take your wares and go next door. At the end of the day, the magazines are as beautiful as they are because of her mania for quality. Kudos also to our office manager, Kristine Guevarra, who, besides her myriad other duties, patiently sits with me as I attempt to master the latest social media formats at lightning speed. Love her. At our headquarters in my hometown of New York, the Venusian power posse presides with equal formidableness (is that a word?). Our photo director, Lisa Rosenthal Bader, is a New Yorker in the very best sense of the word. Brilliant, tough, no-nonsense, with an unerring eye for quality photography. In 1872, Susan B. Anthony was arrested and indicted for the crime of casting a vote in the presidential election at a time when women were prohibited to do so. In what is a now an infamous speech to the court, she bravely argued for the constitutional rights of all US citizens, and refused to pay her $100 fine. It took another 50 years until the 19th amendment passed, granting women the legal right to vote. Raised in a family where any discussion of religion, money, or politics was thought to be impolite, I have often refrained from sharing my own opinions surrounding these topics in public forums. Given the current political environment, it may be time to break that tradition! In preparing for this, our annual Women of Influence issue, we met with and interviewed more than a dozen prominent, successful, insightful women. Regardless of individual party affiliation, never has the message from a single group been so aligned—each shared a resounding concern about the challenges to our assumed freedoms and human rights. Women have been mobilized in a way unseen for decades. “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage,” Anaïs Nin once said. This revitalized level of engagement through protest marches, strikes, and
32 LA-CONFIDENTIAL-MAGAZINE.COM
lobbying efforts has certainly proven once again that women neither lack courage nor conviction. The publishing world often collides with the entertainment industry, which has frequently been accused of shallowness. But I must say, in recent months, I’ve experienced a great sense of pride as I’ve interacted with the Industry’s young starlets, including our last issue’s cover star, Janelle Monáe, who leverages her platform to effect change and to communicate the important messages of acceptance, inclusion, and equality. Women are also increasingly being cast in power roles, such as our current cover star, Neve Campbell, who plays a brilliant senate campaign manager in the upcoming and much anticipated season of House of Cards. We are so blessed to live in a city where women contribute so much to the political, economic and social structure. Here’s to all of you this month. Brava, sisters! Cheers,

On the silver screen, women have held their own in Hollywood for years. In the front office, not so much. These days, the fairer sex is kicking up their game big-time, one designer high-heel at a time. This May, wonder woman/ powerhouse Dany Garcia, cofounder of Seven Bucks Productions (and a pro bodybuilder in her spare time!) is exec-producing the muchanticipated Baywatch, starring her ex-husband and biz partner, Dwayne Johnson, Hollywood’s highest-paid actor. Another tough gal, actress-turned-producer Leah Remini is reinventing
herself once again, this time partnering with A&E for the buzzy round two of her gutsy memoir-turned-documentary, Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. And upstairs at MGM, Senior VP Shelley Reid somehow finds time to lead Visionary Women, a nonprofit that supports women’s initiatives, as well as chair the biggest fashion event in LA, the Otis College of Art & Design Annual Scholarship Benefit and Fashion Show. How much of success is timing and luck? It isn’t—it’s being rooted authentically in what you want to execute. Do you feel women in Hollywood are underrepresented? Absolutely! Every discussion benefits from a woman’s perspective at the table. If you were mentoring a young woman starting in the Industry today, what would your advice be? Be comfortable with the delivery of your point of
view, and surround yourself with supportive people who believe deeply in what you’re doing. Who is your ideal employee? One who understands no great thing is ever accomplished alone. Do you have any regrets? Not trusting myself sooner and at a younger age. What’s the secret to juggling a powerhouse business, family, and hobbies (like bodybuilding!)? Creating an environment that supports everything you want to do and weeding out
the things that don’t. Favorite movies? Historically and into the future, it’s pretty much the entire Disney animated slate! Do you have a secret spot in LA? The Hotel Bel-Air, because it was my first “home away from home” in Los Angeles. The staff makes the visit feel like I’m with family. What are the three things you still want to do? There are millions! But up next is writing a book, expanding my partnerships in the health and fitness industry… and investing in restaurants!

What’s the key to success? Doing what you are passionate about! How much is timing and luck? Timing and some good luck are important, but they are both linked to instinct, which will tell you when to grab an opportunity. Do you feel women are under-represented in Hollywood? Yes! Do the math. What’s your greatest accomplishment? Surviving my second marriage. What advice would you give a young woman starting out in the Industry today? To not be afraid to behave like a woman—success doesn’t require imitating a man. What’s your dearest women’s cause?
Visionary Women (visionary women.com). We are doing great things—hosting salons on topics specific to women, mentoring girls, and using our funds and influence to support initiatives for women. You do an enormous amount of philanthropy… I was brought up that we all have an obligation to help those less fortunate—I am very grateful for my life and it hurts me to see others struggle. What is your favorite secret spot in LA? It’s a secret. But I will tell you my favorite place for lunch: Petrossian on Robertson! What are three films you can’t live without? The King’s Speech, any Matt Damon Bourne movie, and The Queen. Finish this thought: When I travel, the thing I miss most about LA is… Valet parking!

What’s the key to “making it?” Being authentic. And not giving up, mostly. Success is less about talent [than] tenacity. Do you feel women are under-represented in Hollywood? As in the business world, there is a disparity in what women get paid in comparison to their male counterparts. [And] women are held to a different standard. They are expected not to age and not gain weight and then are often punished for it. Whereas leading men who are aging are celebrated and often cast with young women as their costars. What’s your greatest achievement? Raising a daughter who questions everything. Me, her dad, authority. As challenging and annoying as that can be, we want to raise a strong, independent person who doesn’t just accept what she is told. Your greatest regret? Not wearing more short shorts when I didn’t have cellulite. How do you juggle acting and producing with family? Hire people. “I’m happiest when I’m…” Eating anything fattening. But then that quickly turns to regret, but for the moments it’s going down, very happy. “I’m a strong woman because…” I can say that I am not
always strong. If you hadn’t gone into show business, what would you have done? Advocate for victims. My husband said I should have been an interrogator for the CIA! What’s the number one thing on your bucket list
you haven’t yet accomplished? Being calm. No matter where I am or what I am doing, my mind never stops. What are the movies or TV shows you just can’t live without? Game of Thrones. And Game of Thrones.

In the City of Angels, a person’s diet is as divisive as the Westsiders who won’t cross the 405. Yes, there are vegan-friendly eateries opening seemingly every day, but there are chefs catering to the die-hard meat eaters—and Paleo obsessives—too. Is the gap widening between the two camps? At Platform’s The Cannibal LA (thecanniballa.com), a butchery and resto from NYC, the menu is as satisfyingly protein-centric as it sounds—think pâtés, cured salumi, pork bellies, dry-aged ribeyes, and even a whole-roasted pig or lamb feast. But seasonal veggies from Thorne Family Farm factor in, too, in the form of spaghetti squash panzanella, fried Brussels sprouts, and roasted cauliflower. And while the dishes at Here’s Looking at You (hereslookingat youla.com), the creative K-Town hit from two Animal expats, are far from heavy, most aren’t made with vegans in mind—Chinese sausage appears on a tomato salad, alongside frog legs and veal sweatbreads. Leadership Academy, among others. “For me it’s been a natural progression to cook more and more with vegetables,” says Centeno. “There is such a wide variety of raw material when compared to meats, and they invite a lot of experimentation.” Creativity is also on tap at chef Nick Erven’s Santa Monica eatery Erven (ervenrestaurant .com), which has been called “coincidentally vegan.” “[I’m] not necessarily always a fan of vegetarian food, but vegetables are dope, and I like to cook them,” he says. The chef’s spins on plants are aimed at “bridging that gap. We aren’t out to convert people to veganism, just cook a great meal for them!” But, Erven counters, “I
think meat is still king in LA,” a sentiment that rings with chef Curtis Stone: His high-end Hollywood butchery, Gwen (gwenla.com), is the most unapologetically carnivorous of the bunch, with seasonal, “best-inclass” protein ranging from grouse, woodcock, and housemade charcuterie to wild venison, hare, and, of course, grass-fed wagyu beef: “Working with such brilliantly aged and precisely prepared protein is a dream come true.” Even so, adds Stone, “It’s a strange thing coming from a guy who owns a butcher shop, but I think we should eat less, better quality meat.” Centeno agrees: “I know [sustainably raised meat is] expensive, so cooking and eating it in small
amounts makes the most sense from all standpoints.” At Delilah (hwoodgroup.com/delilah), The h.wood Group’s ’20s-inspired brasserie/ club, the provenance of meat is especially key. Says chef Rudy Lopez, “When [diners] see Aspen Ridge or American wagyu on a menu they always lean toward ordering those dishes because they know exactly where it’s coming from.” So whether it’s vegan or meaty, the real trend, according to chefs, is feeling good about the ingredients. Lopez sums it up: “Vegetarian restaurants may be on the rise, but for the most part I can’t see myself creating a meatless menu in this city.” And the war rages on…

Once upon a time, people looking for a high-rise home above Sunset Strip had only one option: Sierra Towers, the 1965built, 31-story building at Sunset and Doheny Road, which has housed everyone from Sandra Bullock and Joan Collins to Emma Watson and Lindsey Lohan. These days, however, an explosion of high-end residential, retail, and hotel projects is taking the Strip into high-stepping, wellheeled terrain. In fact, the former Hustler building on Sunset will be reborn as The Arts Club (thearts club.co.uk), the Gwyneth Paltrow–backed, $2,000a-year private retreat (with a no-swearing policy!), clinching the iconic
boulevard’s A-list upgrade that began with Soho House West Hollywood way back in 2010. Call it a case of location. INDIGO GIRLS WHEN GUESS LAUNCHED ITS MEGA-BRAND 35 YEARS AGO, WHO KNEW IT WOULD IGNITE A DENIM REVOLUTION?
Ah, to be a Guess Girl. Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, and Hailey Baldwin are just a few of the anointed who’ve earned the coveted title. Since the 1980s, Guess cofounders Paul and Mauricio Marciano, who are opening their Marciano Art Foundation in LA to much buzz this spring, have personally handpicked every woman to grace the brand’s signature black-andwhite campaigns. The latest? American model, actress, and star of the upcoming Baywatch movie, Charlotte McKinney. “Guess is just such an iconic brand when it comes to denim,” says McKinney. As such, the brand (411 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-247-8667; guess.com) marks its 35th anniversary with the Guess Originals 1981 Anniversary capsule (think modern fits meet a vintage ’80s/’90s aesthetic). Even McKinney can’t believe she’s part of such history: “I have to say that I still pinch myself when I see my campaigns.” Now, denim brand ambassadors aren’t just lending their faces to campaigns, but adding “designer” to their resumes as well. Case in point: Industry veterans from Miranda Kerr to newcomer Taylor Hill are channeling their expertise on the catwalk into uber-cool collaborations with the world’s most fashion -forward denim brands. Kerr, the Aussie-born Victoria’s Secret alum who attributes modeling to a greater appreciation of fits, fabrics, and finishes, says of her collab with cult favorite Mother Denim, “I wanted the collection to not just look good aesthetically, but

perfect for today’s coveted “relaxed” aesthetic. Taylor Hill, who has walked in shows for Dolce & Gabbana and Miu Miu, calls her partnership with Joe’s Jeans, “an additional bonus. KING OF CLUBS WITH DELILAH, THE H.WOOD GROUP CHANNELS THE UNABASHED GLAMOUR OF TINSELTOWN PAST.
Stepping into oh-so-exclusive Delilah feels like being whisked away to a swanky 1930s soirée. The lounge, which incorporates live music, fine dining, and fancy drinks, marks a sophisticated evolution for the h.wood Group. As the LA natives and longtime nightclub owners have matured along with their friends and family, John Terzian, 36, and Brian Toll, 37, noticed a gap between the noisy nightclub scene and the average LA dining experience. With Delilah, Terzian says, “It really brings the two worlds of a restaurant and nightclub together.” “We want [guests] to feel coddled, that they can always have a great table,” adds Toll. For Terzian, the homage to a bygone time holds a personal connection. “I think I should have been born in, like, the ’30s or something,” he says. “I love tuxedos and the type of décor where they paid extreme attention to detail… All of that is kind of lost in the modern era.” When envisioning the club, designer John Sofio pulled inspiration from Art Deco landmark the Queen Mary, meticulously studying the materials and curvatures of the ship’s interior. Looking forward, the h.wood Group is currently developing a number of new projects, including the recently reopened Blind Dragon on Sunset. Standup knockout: Performing her way through the maledominated world of LA’s 1970s comedy clubs in the hit Showtime series I’m Dying Up Here (INSET BELOW), Hollywood comedienne Ari Graynor found a path that mirrored her own tale of Tinseltown success.
TO DIE FOR
Ari Graynor knows she can get laughs. In addition to several dramatic turns, Hollywood has turned to her for an abundance of funny roles (For a Good Time, Call…, Celeste and Jesse Forever). But the intense intimacy of standup comedy meant flexing an entirely new performing muscle. To prep for her role as Cassie, an ambitious female comic venturing into the exploding, male-dominated LA comedy club scene of the 1970s in the Showtime series I’m Dying Up Here,
Graynor, 33, gave it a go. About her open-mic stints in the much-buzzed-about show, which is based on Los Angeles Times reporter William Knoedelseder’s bestseller about the standup boom years and peppered with executive producer Jim Carrey’s anecdotal memories, she says, “To my amazement, the first time I did it, it went pretty well. I was ready for it to completely bomb, but people were actually into it!” Ironically, before the series came her way, Graynor was ready to put

comedy roles—and perhaps performing altogether— behind her in favor of screenwriting. “I had consciously started to reset my career,” she says, having hit a creative wall with the comedic types she’d specialized in creating. But when she read the script for I’m Dying Up Here over a holiday at her parents’ home, she had to share the storyline with her mother. “We both were there with our jaws on the floor, because in some ways the journey that Cassie goes through in the pilot felt
oddly close to what I had been going through,” she says. “It’s this process of shedding a skin, shedding the shtick, to find something deeper… It’s really a very layered and meta experience of my own artistic journey and hers.” Just don’t expect to see Graynor on stage at the Comedy Store any time soon: “I’m sure I’ll do it again in the future, but I also recognize how much I am not innately a standup comic,” she laughs. “Even if I have never had more respect for people who do that!”

For all the talk of Downtown’s moment having arrived, the white-hot ’hood is in fact “constantly emerging,” says Lisa Fittipaldi, a sales associate at TEN50, an uber-exclusive new condo development at the corner of South Grand Avenue and West 11th Street. Great wine hinges on four elements, says rosé producer Sacha Lichine, the bon vivant owner of St-Tropez winery Château d’Esclans: the soil (that ineffable quality called terroir), the grapes, the climate, and, finally, the winemaker, whose craft harmonizes all the other elements. The problem, he adds, is that rosé is the most difficult wine to make well. Luckily for Château d’Esclans, Lichine is perhaps the most prominent producer in the world. Ten years ago, winemakers, restaurants, and distributors could barely give rosé away. But exports of Provençal rosé to the US increased by more than 900 percent between 2006 and 2015, with a 58 percent increase between 2014 and 2015 alone. Now in its 10th vintage, Château d’Esclans’s flagship rosé, Whispering Angel, has come to epitomize the classic dry Provençal style. Much of the complexity is owed to bâtonnage, whereby fine lees, or dead yeast cells, are stirred back into the wine, while new technologies, including advanced refrigeration systems and pneumatic presses, keep the processing precise, all crucial to the production of “a product that is very easy to make average,” Lichine says. “The perception of rosé in America has changed dramatically,” says Aldo Sohm, chef sommelier at New York’s Le Bernardin, whose acclaimed wine program is central to its three Michelin stars. “There’s a real following of rosé now, which didn’t exist a few years ago.” Perhaps Château d’Esclans’s greatest achievement, says Lichine, has been creating wines whose experiences are evocative of St-Tropez itself—clean, crisp, sophisticated, and fun. “What we’ve done,” he says, “is create a taste.”

IT TAKES TWO THE HUSBAND-AND-WIFE DUO BEHIND SCHWUNG HOME ARE DESIGNING FOR THEMSELVES— AND THE FUTURE. BY OUSSAMA ZAHR
Looking at Dominique Sente and Rudi Nijssen’s first collection for RH (formerly Restoration Hardware)—a dazzling set of light fixtures made of handblown glass globes, lustrous brass, and streamlined retro forms—you could almost guess that her background is goldsmithing and his is antiques. And you’d be right. You might also guess, based on how well the pieces fit into RH’s sumptuous aesthetic, that the brand was heavily involved in their creation. And there you’d be wrong. “One of the most amazing parts of our collaboration is that RH gives us carte blanche,” says Nijssen. “There are no limitations.” RH has been seeking out—and promoting—independent artisans at a time when consumers have become more interested in craftsmanship. Nijssen and Sente are married and work out of their firm, Schwung Home, in Poland, where a six-month creative process takes them from mood boards and sketches to the final prototype. RH isn’t even involved until they present the finished design. “Our only desire,” says Sente, “has been to create pieces that will escape trends, pieces with an architectural and poetic vibe. Part of the source of our inspiration for this collection was the décor of some movie sets— mostly from the ’60s and ’70s.” While Sente has helped Nijssen with previous RH collections that have borne his name, this is the first time they share equal billing. ALL ABOUT NEVE This spring, ’90s TV darling-turned-movie star NEVE CAMPBELL
chews up the not-so-small screen again in America’s other political thriller. by SCOTT HUVER photography by MIKE ROSENTHAL
ometimes, when a celebrity has lived in the eye of an all-encompassing pop-cultural whirlwind, there’s later a moment that they wish they could re-experience, if only to be more centered and present. Just ask Neve Campbell. “Hosting Saturday Night Live with David Bowie— like, really understanding what that meant,” Campbell offers as her rewind moment, a 1997 episode at the height of the then-23-year-old’s Scream fame in which she wishes she’d been able to better focus on the immediate cool factor. “I was terrified! I wish I could have had more fun with it… To be able to walk out on a stage and say, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, David Bowie,’ was pretty incredible!” It was the mid- to late-’90s, the era of Peak Neve, in which the actress had gone from starring in her breakout role as Julia Salinger on the beloved TV series Party of Five to full-fledged movie stardom in a succession of youth-appealing box-office hits that included The Craft, Scream, and Wild Things. And Campbell, who continues her return to TV screens this summer by reprising her role as Leann Harvey on Netflix’s perhaps too politically prescient streaming series House of Cards, can be excused for admitting it was all a bit of a blur. “I don’t think I even knew what was happening,” Campbell, now 43, chuckles. “It was overwhelming and it was wonderful and I was certainly grateful for the work, but I was also working so hard.” That workload included more than 10 months a year shooting 16-hour days on Party of Five. “And then, because I wanted to guarantee that I would have a career after the show,” she recalls, “I felt I needed to do films on the hiatus. It was exhausting.” Her youth helped her endure the punishing schedule, as well as avoid fully grasping her headlong, hyper-speed transformation into a full-blown pop icon subject to a seemingly non-stop sequence of photo shoots, interviews, and promotional ops. “I remember being in a car with my manager and my publicist, and my publicist was very excited to tell me something: ‘Okay, you got the cover of Rolling Stone!’ And I remember first of all being upset that I had to do another photo shoot, and secondly that I didn’t

know what Rolling Stone was. I was just naive.” “I look back on it now, and I’m not sure how that young person did that!” she adds. “I’m glad I was able to put some good work out, and I’m glad people enjoyed it. It was a very odd and magical and wonderful time.” Eventually and inevitably, in the case of most pop phenomena, the pace finally slackened and, despite the urging of some of her reps to follow “the blockbuster stream,” she was able to explore more art-minded fare—the kind that had fed her creative soul as a youth, when she transitioned from aspiring ballet dancer to actress following an injury. “I ended up in this very pop-culture American world, which I’m so lucky to have,” the Canadianborn actress reflects, “but it wasn’t the work that I would have strove for. So for me, it was important to try and do something different. I also needed a break, to be honest—and I took a break.” Campbell resided in England for eight years, worked in theater and with esteemed filmmakers such as Robert Altman, and lived “outside the Hollywood box for a bit, which was great,” she says. Along the way, she met her current partner, British actor JJ Field, and shortly before she became pregnant with their son, Caspian, her agent posed a provocative question: “‘Do you care at all about your American profile?’ I had to question it and go, ‘Oh right, it probably is something I should think about, and not let my career get too far away from me.’” After a couple contented years of full-time motherhood, Campbell says she “slowly got my feet back in,” starting pretty deep-end with prized guest roles in high-profile series like Mad Men and Grey’s Anatomy. Then last year came the right regular role at the right moment: Leann, an accomplished, hard-charging political careerist managing Claire Underwood’s (Robin Wright’s character’s) campaign in House of Cards’ fourth season. “It was the perfect thing for me,” she says. “To step into something that had success, that was quality, that was respected already, and to be able to join an ensemble where I’m not carrying it immediately was exactly what I needed.” She’s back for Season Five, along with Wright and Kevin Spacey, although the show’s fictional White House is keeping better secrets about its plotlines than its real-life, leak-plagued counterpart. “We left with the Underwoods trying to keep trouble at bay,” she hints. “Things are closing in on them, so when we come into the beginning of the next season, we enter into a very fraught situation. The stakes are very high, and trouble ensues—and that’s about as much as I can say!” It’s also a role she feels is consistent with her enduring pop profile. “I was very lucky to be able to play young women who were strong and powerful and not victims, or chose not to be a victim,
then went on a journey to become stronger,” she says. “I feel lucky again to be able to play a role like that. Although Leann’s a little bit uncertain, she’s very powerful and strong and successful. That’s great to play. I think those kinds of roles are very important today. We need to see more of them.” She’s still trying to wrap her head around realworld politics, which from her vantage point has become as chillingly intrigue-filled as that depicted on the series. “You would have hoped that our actual political system would never be as chaotic as the Underwoods’ world,” she sighs. “In some ways, it’s more insane than what you could possibly write without it feeling completely over-thetop. If you were to write what’s gone on in the last two years, no one would believe it.” aving recently participated in the Women’s March on Washington, DC, Campbell remains hopeful, despite her own distaste for the current political climate. “A lot of people felt, as I did, great disappointment with what’s going on,” she says, “but in a sense, it’s been a great thing because it has caused us all to pull up our bootstraps and get active and not take things for granted and try and have a voice. I think we’re all trying to figure out how to go about doing that. It’s good to start that process. That’s what I’m doing at the moment.” Campbell remains a bit astonished just how enduring her ’90s output has been, having recently attended a packed outdoor screening of The Craft at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery with some of her castmates. “People were there in costumes, they were screaming the lines at the screen,” she says. “I don’t know that I ever had such a clear sense of the impact that that movie had. The amount of women who talked about how our characters and that film inspired them to be stronger was pretty overwhelming.” She welcomes encounters with her nostalgiafueled fan base. “It’s funny because there’s always this: ‘I watched you on Party of Five and wow, that was 20 years ago—we’re old!’” she laughs. “Seeing people that have grown up watching you and gone through their own lives and experienced you in different ways through different projects… there’s something nice about that.” Meanwhile, after coming of age in the white-hot spotlight and living out her thirties more under the radar, Campbell is perfectly happy in her own skin these days. “There’s something really lovely about stepping into my forties,” she muses. “I know a lot of people struggle with that—but for some reason, I’m really enjoying getting older. Maybe that’s because I’ve been lucky enough to accomplish a lot of the things that I wanted to accomplish already. That has brought a certain amount of comfort.”

I’ve always been inspired by creating experiences and connecting people. Even when I’m off, I throw events and parties. It’s what I thrive on. Equally accomplished at both the creative and business sides, the native of Chicago moved here with her husband in the late ‘90s to work as a freelancer, after having honed her skills at ad agencies in the Windy City. She transformed her one-woman operation into a thriving design firm that works with a bevy of premier brands. Hilary, in addition to her role as President of the National Association of Women Business Owners’ LA chapter (NAWBO-LA), has received numerous honors, including the Comerica Bank | Los Angeles Lakers Woman of Entrepreneurship Award.
When/where are you happiest? At my desk creating. With my family around the dinner table. With my girlfriends hashing about our days, laughing and sharing. KIKI RAMOS GINDLER PHILANTHROPIST AND PRESIDENT CENTER THEATRE GROUP In 2015, Kiki became the first Latina President of the Board of Directors of Center Theatre Group, and also serves on the boards of the Los Angeles Opera, The Music Center and Pomona College. Kiki and her husband, David Gindler, support many other non-profit organizations on both coasts, including Antaeus Theatre Company, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. During her stint as a big firm attorney, Kiki received recognition from the State Bar of California for her work to establish low income housing for women and children, and subsequently spent time as a entertainment executive before retiring to focus exclusively on the arts and philanthropy.
What impresses you? Wildly successful people who remain humble and kind. Your life in three words: Blessed. Abundant. Unpredictable. Who do you admire the most? Young artists who remain brave and true to themselves. What are your best and worst qualities? Sensitive and intuitive. Impatient and compulsively opinionated. What would you do with 15 minutes of fame (or 15 more minutes!)? I would tell as many people in positions of influence as possible that arts education saves lives. If you had a time machine, where would you go? Medieval England. But I would have to be young, noble, rich, and most importantly, male.

LEISA AUSTIN OWNER IMAGO GALLERIES After working as an art consultant in Texas and Florida, Leisa moved to Southern California in 1991 and opened Imago Galleries in downtown Palm Springs. Now located in Palm Desert, the custom designed 18,000-square-foot architecturally significant structure with a humongous sculpture garden (which also houses her private residence and is quickly becoming known as the desert’s premier pop-up venue) celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. She is extremely active in her community, including a position on the board of the Barbara Sinatra Center for abused children at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage.
Where do you find inspiration? Oddly enough, I’m a magazine addict. I like feeling the paper and the act of turning each page. I want to breathe in the scent of the ink. I am happiest when I find a few hours of quiet time in an otherwise hectic life, to crawl into bed – a dog on either side – and lose myself in an array of magazines, with topics ranging from art and architecture to design and fashion. I will never give them up nor read them digitally. Your life in three words: Art. Work. Dogs. In no particular order. Favorite hidden spot in L.A.: Any cove with whales dining on krill in late summer, preferably aboard a boat I am captaining. What are your best and worst qualities? One and the same: I am honest. KENT MOYER: My first job in this industry was working for Playboy, protecting Mr. Hugh Hefner and his family at the Playboy Mansion. As a graduate of the Wharton Business School Advanced Management Program, I have studied Strategic Management of Luxury Businesses at Wharton and at the SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan, Italy. Over the last eighteen years, I have worked extensively in law enforcement, while operating as a specialist in Dignitary Protection & Intelligence.
What is your feeling about the current quality of Hollywood Celebrity Protection? KM: Most of it is terrible. I have a saying: “Drain the Bodyguard/Buddyguard Swamp.” There are Bodyguards who have become “Buddyguards.” Go to YouTube and you can see the dysfunctional, eclectic protection, where bodyguards (who to me are untrained thugs getting into ‘use of force’ incidents) are selling information on the celebrities to the tabloids and posting pictures with their celebrity clients on Twitter. As professionals, we must maintain a strict barrier between the client and ourselves. One of the basic principles of protection is guarding a client’s confidentiality. WPG & 001 have formally trained Executive Protection Agents that do not engage in that type of “Buddyguard” behavior. What are your thoughts on Client Confidentiality? KM: It is the most important element in a relationship with a client. If you cannot protect their confidentiality, how can you perform physical protection? What people don’t know about the celebrity industry is that a dysfunctional, untrained security guard will do anything to break a news story where they get to talk about their client. They’ll even write a book about them! I get paid not to write the book. What is the most exciting or rewarding moment in your history of providing protection? KM: My company has been involved in three counterterrorism cases and has prevented several terrorist attacks in the U.S., which I am not at leisure to name. What I enjoy most is the behind-the-scenes work with law enforcement and the FBI on those cases. Those cases never hit the media. Our goal is to keep it out of the media. In that regard, we are 100% proactive and preventative in our work.
