EFFORTLESSLY COOL CHICAGO M.C. MICK JENKINS SHOWCASES HIS SLICK STYLE TO LEGIONS OF FANS ON INSTAGRAM. BY STEPHEN OSTROWSKI

A Lollapalooza veteran with a raved-about 2016 debut album, The Healing Component, under his belt, Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins is heralded as one of the genre’s most promising talents. But that’s hardly the message the Pilsen resident broadcasts to his 132,000 Instagram followers

6  MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

(@mickjenkins). “I care more about the user experience,” the 25-year-old wordsmith says. “I don’t want to post eight pictures in a row about the tour dates I just did.” Instead, Jenkins’ feed illustrates his signature highmeets-low style in a candid— yet acutely choreographed— setting: Think navy prep

staples modeled against a busy, blue-green tennis court, followed by hypertrendy Yeezys draped over an understated staircase. It’s a smart parallel to the fastidious craftsmanship typical of his wordplay, with lyrics referencing everything from life on the South Side to photogra-

pher Annie Liebovitz. For Jenkins, whose style muses include hip-hop dandies André 3000 and Mos Def, it’s a natural evolution: “That’s just been my whole life. I was doing stuff like that on Facebook before there was Instagram.” As his appeal widens—he kicked off 2017 with shows in

Australia and New Zealand— Jenkins’ tastes remain rooted in local tastemakers like Penelope’s and Una Mae’s in Wicker Park and Mankind in West Town. But unlike his entendreladen lyrics, he insists his style is independent of any message. “I’m just getting dressed,” he laughs.

Eclectic aesthetic: Chicago hip-hop star-in-the-making Mick Jenkins’ Instagram showcases his high-meets-low style with pics like (clockwise from left) a chic shot in the courtyard of the Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Avenue; a concert scene from Brussels, Belgium during his fall 2016 European tour; and a portrait at the Garfield Park Conservatory in December 2016.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Every spring, a family of rubythroated hummingbirds settles in at the feeder outside the kitchen window of my parents’ home in Ottawa, Illinois. Maybe it’s the sugar water my mom keeps the feeder filled with, or the feast of flowers growing in the garden across the driveway, but once spring hits, they’re there like clockwork. After the quiet of winter, seeing those birds dramatically flit, bob, and weave at the window, wings madly flapping, is one of my favorite signs of the new season. Chicago in spring has that same humming, thrumming energy. It’s the excitement of a new season in our theaters and on our ball fields; the beckoning of the lakefront to legions of fitness enthusiasts; and the blossoming of our incredible green spaces, from Calumet Park just this side of Indiana to Juneway Park in my own stomping grounds on the far North Side. Simply put, when the season arrives it’s an incredibly transformative new beginning for the city, and

even after nearly 20 years as a Chicagoan it never fails to thrill me. Someone else who knows a thing or two about new beginnings? Our cover star Guliana Rancic. In 2012 (coincidentally, the last time she graced our cover), Giuliana was in the midst of a battle with breast cancer. Today, she’s celebrating five years cancer-free and is living her Chicago dream as wife, mother, and powerhouse entrepreneur. We’re inspired by her story and thrilled to celebrate her third Michigan Avenue cover with a must-read interview done by none other than her husband, Bill Rancic. Both frank and funny, it’s a lovely portrait of one of the city’s coolest couples—and the perfect way to kick off this humming, thrumming new season in the city.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND PUBLISHER

from left: Reasons to celebrate! Ringing in the holiday season with Tragil Wade at Siena Tavern; and honoring the new incoming chairman of the Magnificent Mile Association, Rick Simon (left), along with famed restaurateur Phil Stefani at Harry Caray’s River North.

THE NEW YEAR can symbolize so much. To me, it’s about embracing the unexpected. Why’s that? After decades in publishing, I’ve learned to accept change in a sometimes erratic ecosystem. With each successive year, I’ve heard the familiar chorus of industry skeptics questioning the viability of traditional media in a digital-demand world. But here at Michigan Avenue, we’ve simply shrugged off that refrain: It shows in the ever-increasing page counts of our issues; the perennially growing number of partners we showcase at our events who choose us over the competition; and our increasingly trafficked digital and social platforms, which are updated daily with the latest, most compelling content. In fact, audience and brands alike have found that emerging technologies, new modes of content creation, and “can’t buy” event experiences enhance the power and reach of legacy media—that the same experience and “secret sauce” found

in the flagship Michigan Avenue product is equally enriching online and on social media. Proof that it remains as attractive as ever? The return of former cover star Giuliana Rancic. Beautifully garbed in Pamella Roland designs as well as Lester Lampert baubles and James & Sons jewels, the beautiful Chicagoan—whom we look forward to toasting with Beam Suntory later this season—has never looked more radiant. This is Giuliana’s third appearance on the cover of Michigan Avenue, confirming what we, our community, and our valued partners (like Baird & Warner, Chicago Cut, Jameson Sotheby’s International, Halsted Eye Boutique, LondonHouse Chicago, and Dr. Bill Yates) already knew: You just can’t resist the modern magazine.

AMBER GIBSON

ERIC LEVIN

Amber Gibson covers food, wine, and luxury travel for Four Seasons Magazine, Saveur, Hemispheres, and American Way. Her favorite adventures have included snowmobiling and dogsledding in Colorado, spearfishing in Punta Mita, and dining with Francis Mallmann at his home in Uruguay. Champagne, dark chocolate, and gelato are her biggest weaknesses. Behind the story: “I love tasting menus (“Tasting Menu Titans,” page 50) because I don’t have to make any decisions. At a truly great restaurant, it’s the best way to let a chef tell his or her story.” Go-to restaurant: “Cafe Spiaggia has been a favorite for more than a decade. I usually manage to eat healthfully until dessert. The pizzelle ice cream sandwich gets me every time.” Plans for spring: “Maybe traveling to the Northern Territory in Australia— I’m excited to see the real Outback.”

Artist and entrepreneur Eric Levin grew his photography business from modest beginnings, gaining recognition peddling his artistic works off the street. Now operating in NYC and Boston, Eric’s Elevin Studios is a hive of photo and filmmaking activity and an incubator for young talent. Eric studied at Clark University and L’Université de ParisSorbonne and enjoys travel, adventure, and astrophysics. Behind the story: “Giuliana (“G Force,” page 98) had really great energy and was up for anything. We got to talking a bit about her son, and she even gave me some parenting tips (I’m going to be a dad in March)!” Personal style: “Since I’m not much a suit guy day-to-day, nothing beats nice shoes, in-fashion jeans, and a beautiful watch (I have my eye on a sweet Franck Muller). For me, the trick is to care, but not really look like it. I love the Varvatos aesthetic, too— rock ’n’ roll formalwear.”

ZLATA KOZUL NAUMOVSKI

SARAH PRESTON GORENSTEIN

After remodeling her home, Zlata Kozul Naumovski decided she wanted to channel her love of interior design by writing about it. She has written about design and her other love, craft beer, for publications like Crain’s Chicago Business and Sophisticated Living. A South Sider who roots for the Cubs, Zlata enjoys traveling to Europe—especially to Croatia, where she has family—and currently resides in LaGrange with her husband and three kids. Behind the story: “I love Alison (“Kitchen Queen,” page 92). She’s fun and adventurous and speaks her mind. As a designer, she’s always looking for ways to incorporate something vintage with the new, and she’s very sensitive to preserving original details in Chicago’s cherished older homes.” Design inspiration: “One of my favorite designers is Vicente Wolf. His masterful interiors are full of texture and interesting juxtapositions, and they exude calm and sophistication.”

A journalist of 20 years, Sarah Preston Gorenstein has been a writer and editor at Playboy, People, and Parenting magazine, but has spent the last five years running content marketing for Orbitz.com (part of Expedia Inc.). While she wouldn’t trade those 10 years at Playboy for anything, explaining what she does now to her two small kids is a lot easier. Her husband, on the other hand, is still waiting for his invite to the Playboy Mansion. Behind the story: “Kelly Rizzo (“Sound Bites,” page 54) has a great sense of humor and doesn’t take herself too seriously—my kind of girl. Just look at who she’s dating (Bob Saget!)— can you imagine how much fun they have together?” Favorite travel destination: “Turkey was the most surprising country. I rented a car with three girlfriends over spring break while I was studying abroad in Israel (like 100 years ago). It was the greatest adventure of my young life.”

#1: The Invention of Morel, Chicago Opera Theater. Drummer Stewart Copeland is as much at home creating for the concert hall as he was playing arenas with The Police. His latest post-pop project is this riff on a surreal desert-island romance by Argentine author Adolfo Bioy Casares for Chicago Opera Theater. The score, says COT artistic director Andreas Mitisek, “is propelled by pulsing rhythms and driving energy that leave you breathless.” February 18, 24, 26; chicagooperatheater.org/morel #2: Kings and Queens: Pinball, Imagists and Chicago, Elmhurst Art Museum. The Chicago Imagists (a group that includes Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson, and Ed Paschke) are hardly unknown, but here’s a twist from The Elmhurst Art Museum: The exhibition pairs the painters— who found inspiration in comics, advertising, and the everyday— with actual examples of the great arcade game, whose visual punch and ding-ding-ding constitute an art form of its own. February 25–May 7; elmhurstartmuseum.org #3: Some of a Thousand Words, Harris Theater. Former New York City Ballet star Wendy Whelan’s latest outing, created with Harris Theater choreographer-in-residence Brian Brooks, offers solos and duets accompanied by string quartet Brooklyn Rider. “I’ve attempted to illustrate the resitance and opposition in our lived bodies,” shares Brooks.

Plácido Domingo has been bringing audiences to their feet for more than 50 years and shows no signs of stopping. Last season he sang Macbeth in Los Angeles and Vienna before doing Nabucco at the Met; now he’s swinging by Lyric Opera for this love-fest with soprano Ailyn Pérez (in her Lyric debut) and tenor Michael Spyres. March 9; lyricopera.org #5: Destiny of Desire, The Goodman Theatre. When it comes to over-the-top drama and to-themax glam, Latin telenovelas put American soaps to shame. Karen Zacarías—one of the most widely produced contemporary playwrights in the country—draws from the powerfully popular entertainment in this story of—yes—two baby girls switched at birth by a conniving beauty queen. Says Zacarías, “It’s unapologetically feminist, it’s unapologetically Latino. It will feed the mind and feed the heart.” March 11–April 16; goodmantheatre.org #6: Spies, Traitors, Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America, Chicago History Museum. As we struggle to wrap our heads around our new normal, the Chicago History Museum reviews past challenges to the national health with this absorbing show. Organized by the Spy Museum in Washington, DC, it examines events ranging from the British burning the White House in 1814 to the tragedy of 9/11. April 8–November 26; chicagohistory.org #7: The Great and Terrible Wizard of Oz, The House Theatre. Seems like a fool’s errand to wander over the rainbow when MGM nailed it back in 1939. But L. Frank Baum’s classic tale tempts again and again, and House Theatre —known for its willingness to go out on a creative limb—heads down the yellow brick road with its own inventive imagining of Dorothy’s wind-borne adventures. “OUR GOAL IS TO LET THE FARM DICTATE WHAT WE DO.” —john shields

In this age of grab-and-go eats, there’s something to be said for a multi-course culinary journey that can captivate even the most restless of foodies. At several ambitious new Chicago restaurants, chefs are embracing the challenge of presenting diners with a dozen or more courses, throwing down the gauntlet to anyone who thinks of Chicago as merely steak joints and gastropubs. But tasting menus today are more passion than pretension: Show up in jeans, sit back, and let these maestros show you what they’ve got. PERMANENT POP-UP Twenty-seat Temporis has all

Co-chefs Evan Fullerton and Sam Plotnick make an unlikely pair, but the veteran and creative upstart strike a refined balance with their food. “I’m rooted more in the tradition of technique because I had to go to culinary school,” Fullerton explains. Plotnick, on the other hand, began cooking in his college dorm room and has only worked at one restaurant, Les Nomades, where he met Fullerton. “I’m a little more scientific method-y,” Plotnick says. “I want to try a bunch of things I’ve never tried.” That includes an interactive microgreens centerpiece, and a foie gras ice cream

shares the journey of this outstanding expression. How long did it take to create Alta Belleza? Nearly 16 years—which included handpicking 12-year-old blue agave, triple-distilling the añejo in small batches, and then aging it for three years

before a six-month finishing in T5 Tonnellerie Taransaud French Oak wine barrels [that] formerly held Robert Mondavi To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon. What makes the Taransaud barrels so special? We have worked with the Taransaud cooperage for

years, so it was quite an opportunity to access these particular barrels, which add a singular complexity to the taste profile. Share the elements of that taste profile. It is a blend of two places: Jalisco, Mexico, and the Napa Valley. The complex tastes of sweet cooked

agave, toasted almond and cinnamon, and the aromas of green apple and spices mingle with finishing notes of nuts, green pepper, and cinnamon from the wine barrels, which also deliver a beautiful copper tone. Available at The Marq, 60 W. Adams St., 312-6004434; themarqchicago.com

BRING ME THE AXE! IT’S TIME TO TAKE A WHACK AT CHICAGO’S TRENDIEST NEW PASTIME: AXE THROWING.

Strap on your suspenders, because Chicagoans of all stripes are unleashing their inner lumberjack. A centuries-old sport, competitive axe throwing made the leap from backwoods to front and center when Mario Zelaya, a former digital marketer, opened the first Bad Axe Throwing in Burlington, Ontario, Canada in 2013. Ten Canadian locations later, Bad Axe jumped the border for Chi town in 2016. To Zelaya’s surprise, Bad Axe attracts far more than beardy bros. From bachelorette parties to corporate events, it’s an activity for everyone. Here, the founder helps us get a handle on what urban axe throwing is all about. Dress the part: “A lot of people show up in red plaids

and lumberjack gear,” says Zelaya. While that may look cool in pictures, he also stresses comfortable throwing gear and closed toe shoes. WITH ITS HEADPHONES-ONLY EVENTS, BUZZWORTHY NEW OUTFIT SILENT CHICAGO SERVES UP DANCE PARTY REALNESS WITHOUT A SOUND. BY VICTORIA GREENWALD

What can you expect at a silent party? “Oh, you can expect to dance,” says Elliot Echols, one of the founders of noiseless club concept Silent Chicago. With so many nightlife venues in the Windy City catering to very specific niche audiences, Echols and co-founder Mike Johnson launched Silent Chicago in late 2015 “to [bring] people together who normally wouldn’t be together.” Arriving at an ever-changing venue (past locales

have included Rio Chicago, The Society Lounge, and VenueOne), Silent Chicago partygoers don glowing headphones that can toggle between three DJs, each spinning their own unique playlist, from EDM to ’80s to reggae. The result is a mass of hundreds of 20-, 30-, and 40-somethings “from all walks of life” in their own party zones, together. “Everyone loses their ego [and just] enjoys themselves,” says the 27-year-old suburbanite Echols of the

experience, which encourages attendees to let their inhibitions melt away as they sing and dance along to their preferred beat. Can’t get enough of the experience? Silent Chicago is on the move in 2017, as Echols expects to be floating on Lake Michigan and silencing screams during open-air movie events across the city. “It’s just an awesome time,” Echols enthuses. “It’s genuine, and [it makes] you feel young again.” silentchicago.com

Forecasting wine and spirits trends comes as second nature to industry scion Bill Terlato, the president and CEO of Lake Bluff-based Terlato Wine Group (twg.com). As spring blooms in Chicago, he gives us his insider’s perspective on what trends will reign this season. A white that wows. “Our new Terlato Pinot Grigio from Friuli is all estate-grown and bottled, so it only comes from our own vineyards—everything is hand-harvested and handsorted in the winery, and the difference is in the flavor: Great complexity, nice minerality, and a persistent finish.” Amaro is in. “Amaro Nonino is made with more than 80 natural herbs and spices and produces very distinctive signature cocktails. We’re just starting to discover amaros here, but in Europe they sell millions of cases every year. I think it has the potential to be huge.” The Federalist rules. “Our brand The Federalist is hot; it’s the fastest-growing [wine] brand in the US. [We’ve just launched] a bourbon barrel-aged Zinfandel. The line has captured people’s imagination—it’s exploding all over the country.”

MIX MASTER WITH A CONFIDENT, PRINT-CENTRIC SPRING COLLECTION, JONATHAN SAUNDERS DEBUTS AS DVF’S FIRST-EVER CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER.

“Printed textiles were always something I loved, so there is a definite synergy,” says Jonathan Saunders of his interpretation of the iconic DVF brand. LEFT, FROM TOP: Circle shoulder handbag, Diane von Furstenberg ($298); colorful details from the Spring 2017 collection.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JIMI FRANKLIN (CLOTHING DETAIL); COURTESY OF DVF (PORTRAIT, HANDBAG)

BY BRYN KENNY

The name Diane von Furstenberg evokes a rush of unique attributes: femininity, empowerment, confidence, grace. It also conjures New York itself. So when designer Jonathan Saunders presented his first collection for the iconic brand for Spring/Summer 2017, many wondered how a man from Scotland might interpret the vision of a worldly New York woman. The answer, it turns out, is quite successfully. “I saw it straight away— that effortless sense of ease, femininity without being too girly or frou-frou, sensuality, and a provocative nature,” says Saunders, 39, who built his name in London with his eponymous, print-heavy collection (which shuttered in late 2015 after 12 years in business), and who is now Diane von Furstenberg’s first creative head not named Diane von Furstenberg. “Textiles, and printed textiles in general, were always something I loved, so there is a definite synergy between what I stand for and what the brand stands for.”

MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

Saunders’s bold mix of patterns is apparent in this dress ($698) and origami belt ($178) from his new collection.

“I SAW [THE DVF HERITAGE] STRAIGHT AWAY— THAT EFFORTLESS EASE, FEMININITY, SENSUALITY, A PROVOCATIVE NATURE.” —jonathan saunders Midi dress ($498) and hammered-gold earring ($168). right: Scarf-hem tiered dress ($598), belt ($178), Steamer handbag ($798), and Laredo heels ($378).

As von Furstenberg herself steps away from designing to focus more on her philanthropic work, Saunders has segued with ease into the newly created role of chief creative officer. With about three months to present his first collection—which features original Saunders prints—there wasn’t much time to sweat the small stuff. “It was definitely a baptism by fire,” he says. “But there was such goodwill and belief within the team about what I wanted to do, which enabled me to go in with the velocity that was required to put a collection together within that period of time.” That velocity-driven result is a lively, eclectic mix of printed separates, including bold, wide-legged trousers, structured outerwear, flowing skirts, versatile shifts, and, yes, wrap dresses that stay true to the brand’s DNA. Printed silks and cottons—from an eye-catching Sakura blossom pattern to more graphic stripes and color blocking—create an overall sense of playful fluidity. Unsurprisingly, Saunders says he turned to dancers and choreographers such as Michael Clark and Pina Bausch when conjuring up the new silhouettes, noting, “Dancers are incredible examples of body movement and sensuality.” And while DVF devotees will appreciate Saunders’s respect for the label’s heritage, he didn’t shy away from threading his own point of view throughout. One wrap-style dress in particular manages to combine a mixture of seemingly every print in the collection—a testament to his willingness to venture into unexpected territory. “When Diane started the brand, it was about effortless clothes, but also interesting clothes. These weren’t simple retiring dresses—they were bold, bright dresses that happen to have a sense of ease,” he says. “That still feels really relevant today.”

STYLE MADE IN CHICAGO “WE’RE A HIGHFASHION LUXURY BRAND DEFINED BY THE HANDS THAT CRAFT IT.” —scott shapiro

CHICAGO-BASED STATE OPTICAL CO. CRAFTS LUXE EYEWEAR FOR THE WINDY CITY AND BEYOND. BY LAUREN EPSTEIN

Scott Shapiro’s family founded Europa eyewear out of a garage in Chicago in 1977. But after decades of working in the industry, Shapiro and partner Jerry Wolowicz spotted a hole in the market. “There’s a real disconnect between consumers and their eyewear,” says Shapiro, noting that every American optical company imports its products from overseas. “We thought that if we could produce frames here in the US, we could create a more authentic and honest brand.” So that’s what they did. Launched last year (and already available at 500 locations nationwide), State Optical Co. produces frames right here in the Windy City. “Chicago is our home. And it fits the brand really well,” says

70  MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

Shapiro. “It’s an international city, but it’s also a gritty blue collar city. Our brand walks that same fine line—it’s a highfashion luxury brand defined by the hands that craft it.” At State Optical Co.’s factory, craftsmen use over 75 steps to create one pair of acetate eyeglasses, including drilling 21 dots through the temple tip of each pair to represent Illinois, the 21st state in the Union. While the logo is a nod to the brand’s roots, it’s also a stylish touch that its audience of modern movers and shakers will appreciate. Says Shapiro, “[State] is about people who are doing exciting things. It’s about craftsmanship and changing your sphere of influence—doing things differently.” stateopticalco.com

COLOR ME SPRINGTIME! AS BUDS BURST AND NATURE BLOSSOMS, WATCHMAKERS OFFER A RIOT OF COLOR IN PIECES THAT BLOOM ON THE WRIST. BY ALDOUS TUCK

“April… hath put a spirit of youth in everything,” wrote William Shakespeare in “Sonnet 98.” Indeed, the boundless energy of nature’s rebirth has been an inspiration for artists since the beginning of time. And like the Bard, some of the world’s finest watchmakers use springtime as an occasion to express their artistic skill in pieces that celebrate color and high style on the outside and engineering excellence on the inside. Shimmering precious metals, mother-of-pearl accents, and dazzling gemstones enhance the hues of the season. These creations may measure time, but like a beautifully turned sonnet, their appeal is timeless. For more watch features and expanded coverage go to michiganavemag.com/ watches-and-jewelry

HAIR GURU MARIANNE STRO IR DELIVERS THE SCOOP ON MAKING AN EFFORTLESS TRANSITION TO SPRING. BY JESSICA KELLEY

Styling celebrities is every beauty guru’s dream, but it’s old hat for Chicago hair pro Marianne Strokirk, whose clients range from top models to celebrities like Hillary Clinton and Maria Shriver. Having built up a powerhouse portfolio after nearly 30 years, the Stockholm native yearned for “something new and fabulous.” Fast-forward to the recent unveiling of her relocated and expanded Marianne Strokirk Salon, which boasts 20-foot ceilings and a whopping 5,000 square feet of space but still seems intimate and soothes with a sea-blue floor that makes you feel like “you’re walking on water.” As we swing into spring, this hair stylist extraordinaire shares her tips on navigating the transition in style.

Ease into the season. Say sayonara to winter hat hair and frizz with products like Kérastase Elixir Ultime and Pravana Nevo Intense Therapy, both go-tos for Strokirk. “Your hair is left hydrated and moisturized after the cold winter season.” Make the cut. For Strokirk, 2017 is all about “growing up.” That means forgoing long locks in favor of crisp collarbone cuts, showcasing a style that is “fresh, new, and modern.” Be true to you. “It’s all about the individual,” says the Lincoln Park resident, whose personal look reflects her untamed nature. “I’m a free spirit,” says the veteran salon owner. “Whatever my hair is going to do, I do.” 1325 N. FASHION, FORWARD THE FUTURE IS NOW FOR MENSWEAR IN CHICAGO, AS FASHION LABELS EMBRACE WEARABLE TECH AND BRING NEW MEANING TO THE IDEA OF 21ST-CENTURY STYLE.

Tomorrow’s fashion today: The latest looks in wearable tech from Ministry of Supply (TOP LEFT AND BOTTOM RIGHT), whose co-founder Gihan Amarasiriwardena famously ran a half-marathon in the brand’s machine-washable, movementmaximizing Going Places suit in 2015; Z Zegna (TOP RIGHT), whose travel-friendly 2017 collection features pieces that can be folded into their own pouch; and Theory (BOTTOM LEFT), whose new suits are made from breathable, wrinkle-free stretch nylon.

76 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

Technology continues to take over our world, and this spring it advances even further into the sphere of style as three brands amp up their efforts to merge fashion with function. With a just-opened outpost in the 900 North Michigan Shops, Ministry of Supply (312-3741919; ministryofsupply.com) specializes in implementing technology into its garments, including moisture-wicking shirts that don’t show sweat and breathable fabrics for enhanced ease, and has also just introduced a full line of women’s clothing to match its initial menswear initiatives. Also stepping up its wearable tech offerings is Z Zegna (645 N. Michigan Ave., 312-867-3040; zegna.com), who has introduced more travel-friendly wares that feature extra pockets as well as select pieces that can be folded into their own pouch for even more convenience, plus Techmerino, a fabric characterized by high performance that allows the wearer to keep cool. Another fabric enhancement comes from Theory (Saks Fifth Avenue, 700 N. Michigan Ave., 312-9446500; saks.com) with the launch of its travel suit made from Simulate, a lightweight stretch nylon with a crepe-like texture that is breathable and wrinklefree for added simplicity. If this is what the future of fashion looks like, we say: Bring it on.

FRESH-FACED & FABULOUS STEP INTO SPRING WITH THESE MUST-HAVE PRODUCTS FROM SOME OF CHICAGO’S FAVORITE BEAUTY BRANDS. BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE

Rising temps mean lighter nail hues, shorter sleeves, and of course, a skin reboot. For a seamless transition, opt for products with plenty of active ingredients—like these, our favorite new releases for spring. A proper regimen starts with a good lather. The Curative Cleanser from La Bella Figura ($80; labellafigura.com) cleans skin without stripping it dry, says co-founder and CEO Victoria Fantauzzi. Follow with the Chicago-based brand’s justreleased Capsule Collection ($490), a whollycustomizable set of re-energizing serums. Though warmer weather calls for lighter formulas, it’s also a good time to attack signs of aging brought on by the cold. “One of four types of wrinkles we get around the age of 40 are attributed to lack of moisture,”

78

MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

says Cheryl Santucci, director of esthetics at Mario Tricoci Hair Salons & Day Spas (900 N. Michigan Ave., 847-202-1900; tricoci.com). Available at the spa locations, Babor’s HSR lifting extra firming cream ($115) helps to repair loss of elasticity, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. For a more even skin tone, opt for I on Youth Collection by Irene Michaels CC Cream ($33; amazon.com). “Many of us enter spring with blotchy, dry patches that need soothing as much as camouflage,” says Michaels, a local entrepreneur. And as we inch closer to summer, Sisley’s new White Ginger Contouring Leg Oil ($190; Nordstrom, 55 E. Grand Ave., 312-464-1515; nordstrom .com) will tone your stems thanks to essential oils of rosemary and white ginger extract.

With the rise of fast fashion as well as countless collections from upstart new designers flooding the market seemingly every week, it’s no wonder that even industry insiders are experiencing sensory overload. “There are so many clothes right now,” marvels Chicago style doyenne Ikram Goldman. “It’s become a world of disposable items.” Still, the crème de la crème always shines through—and for Goldman this season, that’s Gucci’s whimsical-chic Readyto-Wear collection. Why? Timelessness. “Because [these clothes] are so whimsical, they’re timeless,” insists Goldman. “There’s a sense of humor and a quality to them that lasts for eternity.” It’s not all fun and games, though: Balancing out that sense of whimsy is a real glamour that can only be Gucci—as in one of Goldman’s favorite looks, a pastel blue crew neck layered gown with sequin bow patch and a galaxy of shiny degradé ray patches. “I love the fact that it looks vintage, like a Jean Harlow dress. It’s the kind of dress that I would go to a vintage store and I would look for but can never find because they’re so rare. But here it is.” Price on request; available at Ikram, 15 E. HAVING IT YOUR WAY A CHICAGO COUPLE WITH AN EXACTING VISION GIVE THEIR NEWLY CONSTRUCTED HOME A STRIKING UPDATE BEFORE MOVING IN.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CYNTHIA LYNN

BY LISA SKOLNIK

House hunting is always trying, but even more so in a tight market. Often the best places (especially new construction single-family homes in prime locations) never hit the MLS. So last January, when Chicago orthopedic surgeon Craig Della Valle and his wife Justyna heard about a picture-perfect Lincoln Park home that was going up, they were on it. “We knew it would go fast because it was part of the 2550 N. Lakeview development, and the house next door sold a few days earlier without ever being listed. We were in Aspen and our broker, Annie Caltabiano, was in Naples, but we all headed home to see it by the end of the week,” recalls Justyna. The six-bedroom, five-bathroom home was worth the haste: “We loved the location, the layout, the generous space, and the development’s amenities. But we didn’t love the heavyhanded millwork, fixtures, and finishes that they were going to use,” says Justyna. The couple also has a serious interest in contemporary photography and modern furniture and wanted a home that would showcase their growing collection of both mediums. They were after cleaner spaces with leaner lines.

The Della Valles’ stunning foyer showcases the couple’s original artwork (from Hiroshi Sugimoto, Carl Corey, and David Alee) mixed with Beaubien sconces by Lambert & Fils, a B&B Italia Terminal 1 chaise longue by Jean-Marie Massaud, and a cowhide from Matthew Rachman Gallery.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: A wine-colored Knoll womb chair and ottoman plus an artwork from photographer Robert Polidori’s Versailles series anchor the Della Valles’ family room; Justyna and two-year-old son Dominic relax in the living room, whose highlights include Hannah Vaughan’s Post Industrial Reservoir floor lamp from Pavillion Antiques and 20th C; the kitchen boasts walnut Taburet stools from Ion Design, Flos Aim multipoint lighting, and a Dornbract Tara Ultra faucet.

Yet the house was too good to pass up in every other respect, so they made an offer. But the developer wouldn’t grant their request to stop work and let them finish the home with their own team. His only concession was to alter the layout of the master suite, which was a rabbit’s warren of tiny spaces thanks to its convoluted master bathroom and separate his-and-her closets. The Della Valles hired Chicago interior design firm Project to revamp the master suite into a far more streamlined space immediately, and then help them realize their vision throughout the rest of the house after they closed. Once they had free reign, “off came baseboards, molding, hardware and more to showcase the home’s graceful bones,” explains Project senior interior designer Lauren Warnock. “We replaced the fixtures, faucets, pulls, millwork and countertops in the bathrooms; the hardware in the kitchen; and the lighting in every room with more modern options.” But their most transformative upgrade was to rework the home’s traditional staircase. Conventional oak handrails, balustrades, and stringers were replaced with sleek versions hand wrought in sumptuous blackened steel. “It totally changed the nature of the entire house,” Warnock maintains. Once the structural changes were complete, Warnock helped the couple decorate the home to maximize its newly perfected architectural merits and significant art. Gossamer drapes and opulent area rugs anchor every room, and the iconic modern furnishings they already owned were augmented with key contemporary pieces of similar stature, such as B&B Italia’s Terminal 1 chaise and Modern Industries’ live-edge dining table. Today, the home’s thoroughly modern aesthetic belies its-all-tootraditional roots—which is exactly how the Della Valles like it.

THE DEALMAKER CHICAGO REAL ESTATE MOGUL SEAN CONLON GOES HOLLYWOOD WITH CNBC’S THE DEED.

“I had no interest [in] being on television,” Sean Conlon admits. Come March, though, that’s exactly where the Conlon & Co chairman will find himself as co-star of CNBC’s reality series The Deed, for which he was recruited after consulting on a separate project for the network. Similar in format to Marcus Lemonis’ The Profit, the show focuses on struggling developers aiming to resuscitate floundering projects by tapping into Conlon’s intellect and wallet (“I think I can impart some hard-earned wisdom to these people,” he muses) —and, perhaps, finding levity in the 47-year-old Gold Coast resident’s signature wit. Chicago love: “The greatest American city, bar none,” says Conlon, who notably emigrated from Ireland to the states in 1990 and worked as a janitor before building his brokerage into a billiondollar business. “Chicago was carved out of hard work by immigrants.” Gold Coast go-tos: “The outside table at Gibson’s —it’s the best people-watching spot in the world.” Neighborhood fave: “Barnes & Noble. “The architecture of Chicago inspired me to become a designer at a young age,” says Alison Victoria, who grew up in the John Hancock building and is now host of the HGTV and DIY Network hit show “Kitchen Crashers.” Now, as Victoria tees up her latest project, “Windy City Rehab,”—a docu-series set to debut in April that reveals the good, the bad, and the ugly of flipping homes—the designer shares some of her favorite travel destinations and design sources, from the City of Lights to right here in Chicago.

TEMPERATURE CHECK WHAT’S HOT FOR ’17 IN THE LUXURY MARKET? IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK. BY LISA SKOLNIK

Lincoln Park luxury is hot hot hot, as shown by two primo properties at (from top) 2043 N. Dayton St. and 2225 N. Dayton St.

Realtor.com predicts Chicago’s 2017 home sales will rank dead last among the nation’s 100 largest metro areas. For now, though, the market is on fire—especially the luxury sector. Homes under contract in December 2016 soared 33 percent over the same period in 2015, yet there were fewer homes on the market in January than any time in the past decade, according to Chicago Association of Realtors data that goes back to January 2007. What gives? Two of Chicago’s top luxury brokers, Baird & Warner’s Rick Druker (312-6075115) and @properties’ Emily Sachs Wong (312286-0800), help us take the market’s temperature.

MA: Do you believe the gloomy prediction about Chicago’s market? RD: We were having a record year in luxury until the election, and it hasn’t slowed down. No. 9 Walton is over 90 percent sold at well over $1000 per square foot—the highest prices ever seen in Chicago—and now the same developer, JDL, is giving 2 W. Delaware a full-blown luxury upgrade. New sells; sizzle sells; and full-amenity buildings are in high demand. ESW: People are optimistic about the economy right now because the stock market is high, and buying because they know that interest rates are going up. Look at 400 W.

Huron—it sold out almost immediately. MA: So it’s all about new condos? ESW: No. It’s about anything that has a fresh new look and is already done. Anytime you come out of a recession you have big change. Pre-recession, everything was very traditional and Gold Coast or Lincoln Park. Now there are so many great neighborhoods that luxury apartments and houses are selling everywhere as long as it’s modern and new, and people like its vibe. MA: What do you see going fast? RD: People are redoing apartments in the old classics, such as Water Tower Place, The Carlyle, 161 E. Chicago Ave., 950 N. Michigan Ave., and 1555 N. Astor, because they have spacious apartments, stellar locations, and outstanding amenities. And the so-called B buildings are making a huge comeback for some of those reasons, too, such as 1100, 1110, 1212, and 1300 N. Lake Shore Drive. ESW: The new sweet spot is $2 million. Anything good in that range goes really fast. Two of my listings getting a lot of action right now are totally renovated vintage homes on North Dayton Street. One is a 5-bed, 3-bath row house with a two-car garage at 2043 for $1.620 million, and the other is a 4-bed, 3.5-bath 4000-square-foot home with a two-car garage at 2225 for $2.395 million. RD: We have a spectacular 4-bed, 7-bath, 8,000-square-foot unit with a 17-foot-high living room and 240-degree views at 161 E. Chicago Ave. for $4.299 million; a 3-bed, 4.5-bath 5,000-square-foot unit with multiple balconies at 950 N. Michigan Ave. for $3.8 million and a 5-bed, 6-bath 6,550-square-foot unit with 360-degree views at 1555 N. Astor St. for $3.625 million.

FORCE With a fairy-tale y-tale home life and a powerhouse p rhouse personal brand brand, E! personality and dynamo entrepreneur G iuliana Rancic strides into he Giuliana her 15th year with ork—happy, ppy, healthy, healthy and loving her new w life lif in Chicago. the network—happy, by B BILL ILL RANCIC photography by ERIC LEVIN

WHAT AN EPIC FIVE YEARS it’s been for Giuliana Rancic. The longtime E! Fashion Police star was declared cancer-free after a double mastectomy in 2012, then welcomed her son, Duke, later that year. Since then, she has stepped back into the spotlight in a serious way, launching wildly popular HSN fashion collection G by Giuliana and wine line Xo, G; writing a New York Times best seller, Going Off Script; and partnering with husband Bill Rancic to debut Chicago dining hot spots RPM Italian and RPM Steak (plus the recently opened RPM Italian in DC), all while commuting between LA and her new home in Chicago. With Rancic gracing a record third Michigan Avenue cover, it was clear that only her husband could do the interview justice—and the former Apprentice winner was happy to oblige. In a playful pre-awards-season chat for Michigan Avenue in a cozy corner booth at RPM Steak, Giuliana talked frankly and openly with Bill about her newfound peace, the life-changing lessons of the past five years, and what makes Chicago feel like home.

Bill Rancic: Giuliana, thank you for sitting down with me. I really appreciate you taking the time. It is an honor and a privilege. Giuliana Rancic: My goodness! I wasn’t prepared for something so official. BR: I try to be a professional in every way I can. We’re sitting here at RPM Steak, and I’m excited to let you know that you’re the first three-time cover star in the history of Michigan Avenue magazine. GR: Wow—I honestly didn’t know that. Being a three-time cover person on any magazine is cool, but I think this one is especially important just because I love Chicago so much. I’ve embraced this city, and this city has embraced me. BR: Last time you did the cover was five years ago, and you talked about battling breast cancer. Just recently, you celebrated five years of having your final surgery. Take us through the journey of the last five years. GR: I remember that cover shoot like it was yesterday, because there was so much going on in my life. I was going into surgery in a few days, and I remember seeing the pictures when they came out, and I could see the fear in my eyes. We have that cover framed, and it’s sometimes hard to look at, because it represents a very hard time in my life. That’s why this [new cover] is so special to me. The five-year milestone is so important in breast cancer. I feel like I’ve come full circle. When I did that cover, there was just so much fear and

uncertainty in my future. At five years, I’m much more calm, and I’m such way, and really better because of it. a different person in a way BR: Which leads me to my next question. When you look back at the five years, tell me the three biggest changes in Giuliana. GR: There’s so many, but I think the main one is I appreciate life more. I mean, you just do. When you go through something like breast cancer, as you always say, Bill—I’m going to steal a line from you, and I’m giving you credit... BR: ... which is very rarely. GR: Normally, I steal lines from you but I don’t give you credit. BR: That’s okay. GR: Here I’m going to give you credit, since you’re here in front of me. You always say, “When you go through something big in life, you turn down the volume on the little things and the things that don’t matter, and you turn up the volume on the things that do matter.” That’s what I’ve done in the past five years, and I think you can see it through the decisions I’ve made, especially with work. BR: Yeah. GR: And personally, as well. The biggest has been pulling back on the day-today work life so that I could move to Chicago and be able to take Duke to school every day. Going back to your question, I think I’m much stronger than I was before. BR: I agree. GR: I used to think I was strong, but I didn’t realize how strong I could be. I remember a great quote that I used to always look at; something along the lines of, “You realize your true strength when you have no other choice but to be strong.” BR: You’re out of options. GR: I had no choice, and I realized, “Wow, I’m a strong chick.” That was one of the positives of breast cancer, that realization, because it has helped me go through other things these past five years. The third thing is... Let me think… You know, I’ve always been empathetic, but that got turned up a lot, especially with women and the issues women go through. BR: Speaking of that, one of the things I’m extremely proud of you for doing is creating Fab-U-Wish. Tell me what that has meant to you.

GR: Fab-U-Wish I created not long after I had my surgery. You and I were driving in the car one night, and we came up with the name Fab-U-Wish. BR: We did. GR: You like to think you came up with the name, right? BR: Are you kidding me? GR: I think I came up with it. BR: Wow, this is unbelievable. GR: Okay, you’re right. Maybe you did. BR: I have to have a trademark attorney on retainer in the house. [Laughs] GR: Fab-U-Wish was a way to give back to other women going through breast cancer, but really tied to my own experience. I remember going back to work for the first time after my double mastectomy. I got my hair and makeup done, and I put on a pretty dress, and I looked in the mirror, and it was the first time in a very long time I recognized the person looking back at me. BR: The old you. GR: The old me. The girl before the breast cancer, and that’s what I wanted to go back to. Seeing that really helped me say, “You know what? I don’t have to be a different person. I can be myself. I can still have the life I had before. I’m going to get through this, and I’m going to stay the same woman that I am.” That was very helpful, and I thought, I wish I could do this for other women and just let them feel fabulous for the day. That’s how Fab-U-Wish came about. We’re almost five years in, and since then we’ve partnered with the Pink Agenda out of New York City, which is under the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Together with the Pink Agenda, we fulfill wishes and also raise money for breast cancer research. It’s been incredible. BR: Speaking of Fab-U-Wish, this is Michigan Avenue’s Spring Fashion issue. What excites you about fashion? GR: Everything. I love fashion. I grew up in a fashion-centric household. My father is still, at 79, a master tailor from Naples, Italy. Still, every day, he makes these beautiful custom Italian suits for some of the best-dressed men in Washington, DC. I’m very proud of my father. BR: It’s in your DNA. GR: Just growing up in that household, my mom loves fashion, my sister used to work for Versace when she first started her career. BR: You have quite an eye for it, so much so that you’ve created the G by Giuliana line of clothing for HSN. What can we expect in the spring collection? Are you wearing it now? I know you are. GR: I’m always wearing G by Giuliana. I hear other designers say, “I don’t necessarily design for myself. I design for all women.” But first and foremost, I think you should design what you love, and then take it from there. Because you need to love it and you need to want to wear it. One of the things I love most about the line is that every size is available, whether you’re petite or a plus-sized woman. Fashion should be available to women of all sizes, and all ages. And affordable. Fashion has become very expensive, and it shouldn’t have to be. BR: You’ve created an incredible personal brand. Describe the Giuliana brand in six adjectives or less. GR: Six? That’s hard... Authentic. I think authenticity is the first word that comes to mind. Attainable. Relatable. BR: And affordable luxury. It’s like the restaurant. You come in and you can spend $15 and have a meal, or you can spend much more. It’s the same with the clothing line, and the wine, and some of the other things that we do. GR: Two more. I would say stylish. Honest. And everything I do, I’m transparent, if I can add a seventh. BR: Let’s shift gears. What about Chicago makes you feel at home? GR: You.

BR: Well, thank you. GR: First and foremost, you, Bill. I love that I’m your wife in Chicago. I think that’s cool. When I met you, you showed me Chicago for the first time. You took me to a Cubs game, then driving around the city on the motorcycle, to going to all the hot restaurants and bars. We just had the greatest time, and I fell in love with the city. BR: We danced the night away at the Wild Hare. We were making out on the dance floor, drinking rum runners. GR: You’re right. I think that’s the one thing that makes me, obviously, feel at home. We just have the greatest time here. I feel very fulfilled and happy here. I owe that to you, my love. BR: Wow, thank you. GR: I would never have known Chicago if you hadn’t introduced me to it. BR: What’s it like being a mother? GR: It’s a life-changer, but it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me—you and Duke are the best things that have ever happened to me. He’s just the best. Every day, it’s something new and adorable. It’s a type of joy you just don’t get anywhere else. I love to laugh, as you know, and I laugh my whole life. Italian family, lots of laughter. But the kind of laugh that I experience when my son makes me laugh is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. When I look at him I see you, and you’re an amazing dad, the best dad I could have dreamed of. I just feel like my life’s complete. Things change, but right now life is beautiful. BR: Now, I like to wrap up every Michigan Avenue magazine [interview] that I do— GR: I thought this was your first one. BR: Well, it is, but maybe I’ll be doing more, if they think I did a good enough job. What advice would you give young women out there who are reading this article? GR: One thing is identifying who you really are. Are you more serious? Are you funny? Are you adventurous? BR: Do you have to just be one? GR: No, but identify who you are and work with that. I think so many of us, when we’re going after a job, or anything really in life, we look at the people in that position and say, “Oh, maybe I should be more like her.” I disagree. You should be more like you, and bring something unique to the table. BR: I like that. GR: Work ethic is incredibly important. When I first started out in my professional career, I was the first to get to work every day and the last to leave. “No” was not in my vocabulary. You could ask me to make you coffee, answer your phone, run errands. No matter what my job title was, I did it, and I did it with a smile. I think that’s very important, and a lot of people don’t want to do that. BR: Last one. GR: Reputation. Your reputation precedes you. It’s very simple. Before you walk in the room, people know about you, so you want to make sure you have a great reputation. But one other thing I think is important, too: You always hear people say, “Do what you love.” I take it one step further. I say, “Yeah, but also do what you’re good at and comes naturally.” It just makes life easier. Find out how can you incorporate that into your professional life and maybe make a living off of those qualities that you already have. That’s my last piece of advice. BR: I think that’s wonderful. Giuliana, on behalf of Michigan Avenue magazine, thank you. GR: My goodness. I feel like I’m on the Today Show and you’re Matt Lauer. BR: I appreciate your candor, and I think our readers are really going to enjoy this. GR: Thank you, Matt. I mean Bill. You had me fooled for a minute there!

Eden’s wood-grilled onglet with maitake mushrooms, mustard greens, crispy new potato, and nasturtium chimichurri.

These days, it’s not just commonplace for a chef to work closely with the farmers supplying their restaurant’s produce—it’s expected. Not so typical? For a chef to actually grow it himself. That’s the story behind new West Lake District restaurant Eden and chef Devon Quinn, a trained biologist who built an 1,800-square-foot greenhouse with his father and now grows more than 30 vegetables and herbs there, from purple basil and mustard greens to scarlet turnips. Little surprise, then, that the mantra of this contemporary American restaurant—whose ambitious menu features dishes like braised duck lasagna and lamb loin with pistachioyogurt panna cotta—is, simply put, “clean, fresh cooking.” 1748 W.
