QUITE A PAIR WITH THEIR COLOR-SATURATED, WINDY CITY-CENTRIC INSTAGRAM PAGE, CHICAGO CULTURE COUPLE DOCUMENT THE KINETIC, VIBRANT ARTISTIC LIFE OF THE CITY. BY STEPHEN OSTROWSKI

Scanning the Instagram feed of digital docents Chicago Culture Couple, it’s easy to get the impression that they’re highfalutin art world insiders. On the contrary: The popular account, which chauffeurs followers from blink-andmiss-them walls covered in graffiti to in-the-know gallery shows, is co-managed by

Julia (a 28-year-old advertising professional) and Jake (a 29-year-old capital campaign consultant), a West Loop–based couple who have cultivated their brand while purposely maintaining relative online anonymity—a philosophy decidedly at odds with typical fame-seeking social media connoisseurs.

“It isn’t about us,” says Julia. “We’re trying to show that you can be part of the [art] community... even when you might not be fully engaged.” Case in point: What started as a hobbyist pursuit by the East Coast natives in 2013 (“We wanted to be a part of the conversation, but we didn’t want to flood

our own personal page,” explains Julia) has since morphed into an audience of thousands of Instagram followers—drawn to the couple’s self-described catalog of “bright, arresting colors that stand out in their context”—complemented by ad-hoc curatorial projects such as organizing Vertical Gallery’s recent The Power

of Paint show. And while the pair’s breadth of coverage suggests they’ve left no Windy City nook unexplored, the couple insists otherwise. “There’s always something new [in Chicago],” notes Jake. “We’ve definitely scratched the surface, but we’re far from seeing it all.” @chicagoculturecouple

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

I’ve bled Cubbie blue since the age of five (the first autograph I ever got was from team broadcaster Steve Stone, my daily companion on WGN), and even five months after the World Series, it’s still surreal to think that our Chicago Cubs are the champs. Finally, after the years of mediocrity and close calls and heartbreaking misses, none of it matters. The curse has been lifted, and there’s joy in Wrigleyville. Joe Maddon is a huge reason for that. With his quirkily relaxed managerial style, the Hazleton, Pennsylvania, native kept the young team at ease when the pressure was highest, and they delivered—and how. As a die-hard fan and a proud Chicagoan, I’m

thrilled to have Joe grace our Late Spring cover as he steps back into the dugout for the Cubs’ first post-curse season. Joe isn’t the only impressive figure in our pages this time around: It’s also our Power Players Issue, featuring nine influential Chicago women who are making great things happen in the city and around the world. From finance guru Nicole Lapin and fitness queen Haley Stone to US Army veterans and saffron entrepreneurs Kimberly Jung and Emily Miller, each has a bold vision and will to succeed that are downright inspiring. “Inspiring” also perfectly describes the upcoming cultural season, with major milestones

for a trio of local institutions: The Museum of Contemporary Art kicks off its 50th anniversary celebration with a much-anticipated exhibit from Takashi Murakami; the National Museum of Mexican Art fêtes its 30th with a gala and a show focusing on local Latino artists; and in Oak Park, the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust honors the 150th birthday of the master architect with an essential event for architecture buffs, the Wright Plus 150 housewalk. All that, plus a victory lap for the city’s latest world champions? Now that’s what I call a sensational spring.

2006 - 2016

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND PUBLISHER

The transition from spring to summer is one of my favorite times of year. The roof at Soho House gets busier, while outdoor favorites like LondonHouse and Chicago Cut work their way into my social calendar. In short, everything bursts with infectious energy, and we adopt that same momentum at Michigan Avenue. Case in point: On April 26, we’ll toast the celebrated subjects of this, our Power Players Issue, with a blowout bash at the stunning Park Hyatt. From authors and interior designers to entrepreneurs and fitness phenoms, this year’s portfolio of influential females carries on the tradition established by boldface names like Justine Fedak of BMO Harris Bank, Eve Rogers of Graff Diamonds, and other local luminaries whom we’ve showcased in the past. I can’t think of a better place to bring different facets of the community together than in one of the city’s premier sophisticated spaces.

Another reason to love spring? Men’s fashion can get a bit quirkier—think a patterned, lightweight blazer from Burdi paired with trousers that pack some pop from Oxxford Clothes. I’ll be culling some clothing cues on April 28, when we’ll sponsor the 16th annual Driehaus Awards for Fashion Excellence supporting student designers. Michigan Avenue endeavors to be a steward of the arts and admires the Driehaus Design Initiative’s similar mission. As always, keep up with the action on our Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter channels, as well as at michigan avemag.com/calendar. It’s hard to keep track of it all— and that’s the fun part!

BY THOMAS CONNORS

A detail from Magic Ball II (1999) by Takashi Murakami.

Andy Warhol unabashedly embraced art as commodity, but for all his appropriation and mass-production (not to mention the inarticulate asides that pulled the carpet from under fans and foes alike), there’s no doubt he took Pop seriously. Takashi Murakami, a master marketer whose work is so purely of the man and the moment, is something else again. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Museum of Contemporary Art gives the happily transgressive Japanese artist a show as expansive as his ambition: Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats His Own Leg. Drawing from cartoons, anime, and a geeky subculture often centered on infantile sexual expression, Murakami— not short of cryptic comments himself—may well be the most product-driven artist of all. After all, the man has done an album cover and video for Kanye West, and lent his visual style to Louis Vuitton. “When he issues pillows or handbags, that gets the art establishment uncomfortable,” observes MCA curator Michael Darling. “That does take a swipe at all the rules fine art has created to maintain its exclusivity, but when you look again at a painting of his, you are back in a state of awe. He has found a way to have it both ways.” June 6 through September 4, 220 E. Chicago Ave., 312280-2660; mca.org

“WE’RE GOING STRAIGHT TO THE PRODUCER—THIS IS AFGHAN SAFFRON THAT IS FRESH FROM THE HARVEST.” —KIMBERLY JUNG

TWO CHICAGO WOMEN ARE ON THEIR WAY TO MAKING SAFFRON THE NEXT BIG THING—AND EMPOWERING AFGHANI WOMEN AND FARMERS IN THE PROCESS.

POWER PLAYERS

Spice girls: Chicago-based Rumi cofounders Kimberly Jung and Emily Miller (ABOVE, FROM LEFT) hold the fruits of their labor: threads of Afghani saffron, which is harvested from saffron crocus flowers (TOP) and transformed into products like Rumi spice blends (HERE) and new saffron gummies (TOP LEFT).

While Kimberly Jung and Emily Miller were deployed with the US Army in Afghanistan— defusing roadside bombs and performing night raids with Special Forces, respectively—they couldn’t escape the feeling that what they were doing wasn’t working. “We felt like we weren’t actually going to the root of the problem, which is economic empowerment,” explains Jung. A few years later, while getting their MBAs at Harvard, the pair decided to do something about it and started Rumi Spice, a Chicago-based business selling Afghan saffron. “People think that only war and opium and the Taliban come from Afghanistan,” admits Jung, but the nation also produces some of the highest quality saffron in the world—and until Rumi came along, it had been nearly impossible to obtain in unadulterated form. Now, nationally renowned restaurants like The French Laundry and Le Bernardin along with Chicago favorites Dusek’s, Naha, and GreenRiver are lining up to add Rumi’s product—which this spring expands to include saffron butter, gummies, and more—to their menus. “We’re building bridges between Afghan farmers, who make up 80 percent of the population, and foodies, diners, and chefs around the world,” Jung boasts, noting that Rumi now employs 384 Afghan women to harvest their saffron, has partnered with 94 different farmers, and is already responsible for five percent of Afghanistan’s annual saffron output. Now that’s impact. rumispice.com

62  MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

How did Nicole Lapin, a self-described “moneyphobic mattress stuffer,” become a New York Timesbestselling finance guru? In 2004, as a Northwestern undergrad (and future valedictorian), the journalism major talked her way into a job reporting from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. “I was 18 and went to this broadcasting company

and was like, ‘I love business news’—completely lying,” admits Lapin. Now a CNBC and Bloomberg alum, cohost of the CW’s Hatched, and author of hit book Rich Bitch, Lapin has just released her second tome, Boss Bitch, a 12-step plan for getting your career together aimed at helping young women avoid having to fake business literacy like she did.

Beyond driven: “I got my start in broadcasting [at] 15 at my local cable access station. I thought, ‘If I can say “Nicole Lapin, CNN,” before I die, I’ll die a happy woman.’ And I got there when I was 21.” Windy beginnings: “Chicago is everything to me. It’s where I got into business news.” Goals for 2017: “This is the year of the side hustle—

whether it’s in the shared economy, like Uber and Airbnb, or something you can do to incubate your passion.” Making mistakes: “I love talking about my failures and embarrassing stories more than anything else— those are always more instructional.” Barnes & Noble, 1130 N. FROM WORLD-PREMIERE THEATER TO PALATEPLEASING RESTAURANTS, THIS SEASON IN CHICAGO HAS A DISTINCTLY LATIN FLAIR. BY THOMAS CONNOR CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: The Dineamic Group goes Latin with new restaurant Barrio; and the dance floor calls in Teatro Vista’s La Havana Madrid, with a salsa-riffic soundtrack by Carpacho y Su Súper Combo.

Latin culture is everywhere you look in Chicago right now, from incredible restaurants and extraordinary museums to cultural events on stage and screen. Here, six ways to immerse yourself in the city’s rich Latino scene this spring. What makes a community? Churches, schools, shops—and back in the day, nightclubs. Especially in immigrant enclaves,

where the sounds of home never sounded sweeter. ➊ La Havana Madrid, which once stood at Belmont and Sheffield, was one such spot. Playwright Sandra Delgado and Teatro Vista celebrate the music and meaning of the popular club in a lively world-premiere evocation at Steppenwolf Theatre (April 14 through May 21, 1650 N. Halsted

St., 312-335-1650; steppenwolf.org). The Oscars telecast may be the film buff’s winter high, but come spring, serious cineastes make sure they’ve got the ➋ Latino Film Festival on their schedules. Now in its 33rd year, this celebration of movie magic features dozens of pictures, including the prison drama Perros, starring John Leguizamo,

and Ari Manuel Cruz’s Before the Rooster Crows, the story of a Puerto Rican girl’s thwarted dreams (April 20 through May 4, AMC River East 21, 322 E. The works on view, notes visual arts director and chief curator Cesáreo Moreno, range from “fun and delightful observations of our city to compelling political comments and a desire for change in society. Spun around a massive oval bar, with a brightly kaleidoscopic floor, the new Dineamic Group effort ➎ Barrio (65 W. Kinzie St.; barriochicago.com) screams “fiesta.” Top Chef contestant Katsuji Tanabe helms the kitchen, where his MexicanJapanese heritage is seen in dishes like grilled diver scallops with poblano-uni relish. And in Logan Square, ➏ Quiote (2456 N. California Ave., 312-878-8571; quiotechicago.com) opens early, serving coffee and conchas, those spiraling, rise-and-shine breakfast buns that are a Mexican staple. By lunchtime, the place is an allout taqueria, and come evening, a full dinner menu kicks in. Topping it off is the sexy, subterranean mezcal bar, where beverage director Bobby Baker has created a compelling menu of agave-driven cocktails.

LA VIE EN ROSÉ CELEBRATING THE 10TH VINTAGE OF ITS BUZZY FLAGSHIP ROSÉ, CHÂTEAU D’ESCLANS BRINGS A TASTE OF ST-TROPEZ TO THE STATES.

Great wine hinges on four elements, says rosé producer Sacha Lichine, the bon vivant owner of St-Tropez winery Château d’Esclans: the soil (that ineffable quality called terroir), the grapes, the climate, and, finally, the winemaker, whose craft harmonizes all the other elements. The problem, he adds, is that rosé is the most difficult wine to make well. Luckily for Château d’Esclans, Lichine is perhaps the most prominent producer in the world. Ten years ago, winemakers, restaurants, and distributors could barely give rosé away. But exports of Provençal rosé to the US increased by more than 900 percent between 2006 and 2015, with a 58 percent increase between 2014 and 2015 alone. Now in its 10th vintage, Château d’Esclans’s flagship rosé, Whispering Angel, has come to epitomize the classic dry Provençal style. Much of the complexity is owed to bâtonnage, whereby fine lees, or dead yeast cells, are stirred back into the wine, while new technologies, including advanced refrigeration systems and pneumatic presses, keep the processing precise, all crucial to the production of “a product that is very easy to make average,” Lichine says. “The perception of rosé in America has changed dramatically,” says Aldo Sohm, chef sommelier at New York’s Le Bernardin, whose acclaimed wine program is central to its three Michelin stars. “There’s a real following of rosé now, which didn’t exist a few years ago.” Perhaps Château d’Esclans’s greatest achievement, says Lichine, has been creating wines whose experiences are evocative of St-Tropez itself—clean, crisp, sophisticated, and fun. “What we’ve done,” he says, “is create a taste.”

The fashion industry has been under scrutiny for years, as consumers have questioned the ethicality of materials and manufacturing processes. But now, thanks to big names like Stella McCartney, sustainable style is no longer synonymous with ill-fitting pieces in granolabeige and moss-green. The movement is gaining momentum right here in Chicago, spearheaded by four local women who are changing the business—one ethical ensemble at a time. It was a chance encounter that pushed designer Liz Williams into the outerwear business. Her line, Coat Check Chicago (Cinnamon Boutique, 2104 W. Roscoe St., 773-281-2466; coatcheck chicago.com), was inspired by a coat attendant who admired Williams’s handmade, selfdesigned winter coat. “[We] embrace a slow-fashion approach,” Williams explains, “[focusing] on longevity and good design to address environmental impact.” That is, her Chicago-crafted pieces are made to last—unlike the disposable fast-fashion finds

that take up wardrobe (and landfill) spaces across the country. Indeed, 85 percent of unwanted clothing ends up in landfills. “The fashion industry is the second mostpolluting industry in the world— second only to petroleum,” notes Candice Stewart Collison, who’s aiming to change that trend with Mod + Ethico (27 N. Morgan St.; modandethico.com), her Fulton Market boutique, which boasts a modern, urban aesthetic and a decidedly sustainable philosophy. “We source American-made, handmade, and small-batch manufacturing,” Collison explains, “[plus] fair trade, charitable brands, and eco-friendly materials.” Equally frustrated with the fast-fashion movement, designer Jamie Hayes founded Production Mode (3013 W. Armitage Ave.; productionmode chicago.com) after working in the field of immigration and labor rights and volunteering as a campaign leader for Chicago Fair Trade. “In all this work, I missed the artistry of fashion—the colors, textures, and cuts as they relate to the body,” she says. “Production Mode brings together the artistic, design, and activist elements of my career.” Think high-contrast pieces (“I like to play with opposites, with tensions,” Hayes says) made in small batches using local resources and vegetabletanned leather—taking the high road without sacrificing high style. Sararose Krenger of Sararose on Oak (67 E. Oak St., 773-6543421; sararoseonoak.com) had the same stylish goal when she started her brand, Stix and Roses, in 2010. Now sold at Sararose on Oak, an expansion of her first studio space, the line uses only eco-friendly resources like bamboo, Tencel, organic cotton, and upcycled materials to create beautiful, body-flattering clothing. Krenger’s philosophy? “We don’t ever want to settle. We want the best for you, your body, your home, the environment, and our fellow citizens of planet Earth—and we want to look great while we’re at it.”

NORTH SHORE FITNESS PRO HALEY STONE TAKES HER DANCE FITNESS PHENOMENON WERQ TO THE NEXT LEVEL. BY GWENDOLYN PURDOM

Dance dance revolution: Once an EPA specialist, local fitness guru and WERQ founder Haley Stone (TOP RIGHT) now heads a cardio dance movement all over Chicago— plus hundreds of other cities across 36 states.

80 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

Teaching fitness classes had long been a “side hustle” for Haley Stone. But when cardio dance videos that the Glencoe resident uploaded to YouTube garnered more than a million views, Stone— then still working full-time at the Environmental Protection Agency—knew she was onto something bigger, and WERQ was born. Five years later, the mother of two’s pop-and-

hip-hop-centric program has become a fitness sensation, with classes taught in 36 states by more than 1,000 instructors—and growing. What makes it WERQ: Mixing charting hits with repetitive choreography lets newbies feel comfortable and free to let loose. “[We] really just focus on the fun of it, because when

it’s fun, the calories follow,” says Stone. All in the family: Impromptu predinner dance parties are a regular occurrence for Stone, her physical therapist husband, and their two young daughters. Go-to gymwear: A devoted “fitness chic” fan, Stone can’t live without her muscle tees, Lululemon leggings, or Victoria’s Secret sports bras.

Mark your calendar: Stone’s #GetLifted Fitness Festival returns to Chicago for its second annual gathering in September. STYLE WELLNESS

SPRING REVIVAL HIT “REFRESH” THIS SEASON WITH THREE INNOVATIVE NEW MED-SPA TREATMENTS. BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE

Boost Hair Growth: This year, the best approach to antiaging (specifically hair loss) is regenerative biological procedures, says Dr. William Yates of Chicago’s Dr. Yates Lifestyle Med. Platelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP, restarts hair follicles by activating platelets from the patient’s own blood to release growth factors and, in turn, produce a better-quality mane. “It’s using your own natural defensive mechanisms to heal yourself, so there’s no risk,” says Yates. dryateslifestylemed.com

Recharge Skin: Why have a single treatment when you can have four? The new Illume Micro Fusion Facial at Leah Chavie Skincare Boutique combines microdermabrasion, microneedling, LED light therapy, and an infusion of organic products from the spa’s collection for a fresh, dewy complexion. leahchavie.com

Beat Depression: Researchers have changed the way depression is remedied with a revolutionary treatment that utilizes ketamine—yes, ketamine. Available at the new IV Solution Ketamine Centers of Chicago, founded by Dr. Bal Nandra and Dr. Irvin Wiesman, the treatment begins with six 45-minute infusions over two weeks, followed by more infusions as needed. Though the drug is associated with recreational use, when administered via an IV at a smaller dose it’s an effective (and FDA-approved) treatment for depression. Says Nandra, “Experts have said it’s the greatest advancement in mental health in half a century.” chicagoivsolution.com

Remember the name Elena Bobysheva. Moscow-born and based in Geneva, Illinois, the 27-year-old womenswear designer is turning heads with her buzzed-about sustainable fashion brand. Since launching in 2013, Bobysheva—a self-proclaimed champion of “clean, minimalistic lines

could be her most accomplished work yet: the Spring 2017 Icon Collection. Deceptively simplistic in their completed forms, Bobysheva’s standout looks are anything but. Case in point: An Italian doublefaced wool crepe fitted minidress with a threetiered skirt consisting of princess satin and pleated

georgette that peeks out from underneath a cutout at the hem. Complete with guipure lace trim and a grosgrain ribbon waistband, the modern geometric structure of the piece is smartly juxtaposed with luxe, feminine fabrics. This careful balance of hard versus soft is a key recurring element in Bobysheva’s

designs (which are sold exclusively online) and part of what makes them so compelling to her ever-growing fan base of chic women in Chicago and beyond. With such a strong vision for her brand paired with design talent for days, one thing is clear: Bobysheva is just getting started. elenabobysheva.com

STYLE TIME HONORED

I AM WOMAN BY ALDOUS TUCK

A strong trend at this year’s Swiss watch fairs was a renewed emphasis on female clients. While new women’s timepieces and collections are well-represented annually at Geneva and Basel, the 2017 difference is that the industry let its female customers know loud and clear that it has them top of mind: stunning new additions to collections that beforehand had a decidedly masculine flair; the incorporation of non-traditional materials into feminine designs; the expansion in categories such as smart watches, world timers, and sports watches, often considered the domain of men. This year, watchmakers are right on time with what women want. For more watch features and expanded coverage go to michiganavemag.com/ watches-and-jewelry.

JOE COOL With Zen-like calm and a World Series title in hand, Chicago Cubs skipper Joe Maddon has his eyes on another thrilling run in Wrigleyville. by JAYE MADDON photography by JACK PERNO

REMEMBER THE BILLY GOAT? BARTMAN? THE BLACK CAT IN ’69? All the superstitions and talk of curses seem so silly now, because none of it matters: After 108 long, long, long years, our Chicago Cubs are the reigning World Series Champions. All credit to Theo and Bryzzo and Zobrist and Lester and the rest of the guys, but let’s be real: It was manager Joe Maddon, with his slogans and goofy team dress-up days and demeanor of (mostly) Zen-like calm, that allowed this young team to “embrace the target,” shake off the pressure, and take home the trophy. Now, in an exclusive Michigan Avenue conversation with his wife, Jaye, as the team kicks off a new season, Maddon reflects on the World Series win; contemplates a Cubs dynasty; and reveals what makes Chicago fans some of the finest in the world. Jaye Maddon: So Joe, how has life changed since the World Series? Joe Maddon: I don’t think it’s changed a lot for us, babe. There’s been more requests—there’s always been a lot of demands on time, but I think we’ve done a pretty good job [of managing it]. There’s more attention and I’m maybe more recognizable. But for the most part, I haven’t felt a whole lot different. How about you? Jaye: Me neither. Like you said, we’ve struck a balance, so I agree with you. Joe: Wow. Mark it up! [laughs]. Jaye: What’s your favorite memory from the whole World Series experience? Joe: I gotta be careful there… My favorite memory of the whole World Series experience, I’d have to say, is the last out. Ground ball to third. You can talk ad nauseum about all the micro things that occurred: Being with [you] on the field after the game was outstanding; that little rain—as we were trying to get back into the dugout it started to rain, and it didn’t matter. It felt kinda cool based on what had happened earlier with the rain delay. Leaving at 3 o’clock in the morning on a 747, being extremely tired, getting to Chicago at 7 o’clock, and it did not matter. It was great. But for me, the favorite thing is that chopper to third, man. Because in that nanosecond you realize this play’s completed and you win the World Series for the first time in 108 years. God bless, that is a moment you can never really recapture. Jaye: How does it feel to be known as the guy who broke the Cubs curse? Joe: God, I don’t feel that way. I feel like I’m part of it. I’ve only been here [in Chicago] two years. I’ve never felt the curse. I’m appreciative of it, I understand it, I know folks have been concerned for many years, but heck, for two years we’ve been there—we’ve won an average of 100 games a season, we have this great young team. It’s wonderful to be considered part of it; I know in that black

and white photo that’s hung up on somebody’s wall in the year 2050, you’re gonna look back and see the 2016 Cubs and it’s going to get even more glorious by then. To be a member of that is awesome, but I’m just part of it. Jaye: Looking back on last season, what are you proudest of? Joe: I think the fact that we were picked from day one—even before day one, from spring training even, when I talked about embracing the target. I’m most proud of the fact that our guys were able to deal with the pressure and expectations as well as we did. And these guys are young—it’s not like you’re talking about this salty old group of veterans. Young guys, inexperienced guys, talented, but dealing with an enormous level of expectations and pressure, and going wire-to-wire… To me, that’s incredible. It doesn’t happen. How do you feel about that, babe? Jaye: I think it’s a great accomplishment because only being there for two years, there’s a certain feeling of getting all the chemistry and everybody working together and pulling on the same end of the rope. And sometimes that takes a while. But you talk about how great everybody was, and you could actually see it. The team really supports each other, all the teammates, no matter who. It really is a family. Which leads me into this question: Is this club capable of becoming a dynasty? Joe: That’s a big word. I know we won the World Series last year and did not the year before, but I like that two years’ body of work: [Championship Series] the year before, coming within four games of going to the World Series, to winning the World Series. I don’t know what people consider a dynasty: Do you have to win the World Series on an annual basis, or do you have to get deep into the playoffs annually? I think the last one was the Yankees in the mid-’90s or early 2000s, and they had this great core group of wonderful young players, and we have that. So I think we’re capable of doing this for a long period of time; I think we have to do it for that word to be attached to us. Jaye: What are you most excited about for the team in 2017? Joe: Most excited about the fact that we could do it again. I’ve been focusing on the phrase “D-Peat.” I’m really eager to see if we can play the same level of defense. Our offense is naturally going to get better because these guys are so young and so skillful and with greater experience, they’re just naturally going to get better. So I’m just eager to see the defense and see if we can play on the level we did last year, and if we can, we could replicate a lot of what we did last year. Jaye: Last year it was “Try not to suck.” This season, mottos like “Be uncomfortable” and “Authenticity” have been mentioned… How do you think the slogans have helped the team?

JOE MADDON CELEBRITY GOLF CLASSIC In its debut last year, this fundraiser for Joe Maddon’s Respect 90 foundation—which “provides opportunities for Chicago’s innercity children and young adults to develop championship attitudes through sports while encouraging fitness, academic, and community engagement”—instantly became one of the most anticipated in the city. No wonder: It’s a dream come true for Cubs fans, with each foursome including a former or current Cubs player, and Maddon himself playing the first hole and taking pics with all participants. Says tournament chairman Jerry Lasky, “We blew it out last year—it was beyond Joe’s wildest expectations—and we expect to sell it out quickly again this year.” With an all-star slate of scheduled participants ranging from Cubs legends Kerry Wood, Ryne Sandberg, and Rick Sutcliffe to World Series stars Ben Zobrist and Miguel Montero—and even superfans John Cusack and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder—that’s the safest bet you can make all summer. “I HAVEN’T REALLY WRAPPED MY HEAD AROUND LAST YEAR YET; I PROBABLY WON’T FOR SEVERAL YEARS. SO IT’S ABOUT TODAY. IT’S ABOUT THIS GROUP. IT’S ABOUT NOW.”

Joe: I like an esoteric message that starts out as an esoteric message just among the group and then hopefully blossoms among the fan base. I like the guys to see—that’s why I like T-shirts; I like for them to see the message daily, and be reminded about it daily. That’s where I’m coming from with all this stuff; just simple reminders of simple messages daily that I think can impact us in a really grand way. Jaye: Let’s talk about Respect 90. You’ve been very active in Chicago with your Respect 90… Joe: Our. Jaye: [laughs] With our Respect 90 foundation. Why is it important to you that we give back? Joe: Because it’s all about that. I mean, what is the good of really gaining any kind of personal wealth or prestige, or however you want to label what happens to us as we move this further along, without being able to share it? If you can’t share it then it really is no fun pushing yourself to achieve more. I think achievement needs to be shared. Jaye: What is your vision or goals for the foundation? Joe: We’re still trying to define all that. The vision and the goals are to stay after it hard in an attempt to raise funds and awareness for different groups, whether it’s the homeless that we work with, the immigration project, Misericordia, the Crushers Club—whatever groups we want to work with, raise awareness and then of course hopefully be able to help them financially. The goal is really just spreading the tentacles, trying to reach as many folks as we can. I don’t want to put restrictions on the foundation by saying we’re limited to certain areas. I like unlimited growth potential mentally, and I think that’s what we should be about. Jaye: You’re famous for keeping your cool and your sense of humor on the field. What keeps you so relaxed? Joe: My wife. Jaye: [laughs] Joe: I just wanted to hear you giggle. I do believe my dad does [keep me relaxed]. My mom was a bit more excitable, but my dad was the most patient man I’ve ever met, so I think part of it is genetics—the Italian side of my family, believe it or not. They took life as it came. More specifically, I do like to meditate as often as I can in the mornings. I think that matters, and I think rest matters. I’m all about rest, I’m about meditation and exercise—if you’re able to exercise and clear your body and mind, that also [gives you] the ability to transcend the moment in a situation where you can’t control yourself. Jaye: What are some of your favorite things about Chicago? Joe: Probably the most important thing is the people. I’ve said it before: I think my hometown, Hazelton, Pennsylvania, is like a microcosm of Chicago. A lot of European settlements in Hazelton, the way the city was set up with different blocks of ethnicities from different countries, and the same thing occurs in Chicago. So when I speak with the folks in Chicago it’s really familiar, man; it’s crazy. I feel really, really comfortable. Jaye: How are fans different here than in Florida or Southern California? Joe: There are more of them—more of them everywhere—and in some ways

[they are] probably the most understanding [fans] in the history of the game. Even though the burden’s been lifted, for a long time, man, the support was magnificent absent of a world championship. To have as many people follow the Cubs as do and have had to go so long without an actual title and still be as vehemently loyal as they are, [that’s] unique. No other group can do that. I’m not degrading Angels fans or Rays fans—they’re wonderful—but the Cubs fan is unique, man, and I didn’t know that until I got there. Jaye: That’s one of the first things I noticed going to Cubs games. That there could be so many people there in the afternoon on a [weekday] and they’re all very engaged in what’s going on in the game. It’s not a whole lot of fanfare going on with other things. There’s just the game that’s keeping people busy and engaged. Joe: Sounds like I need to put you in the bleachers one game, babe. You might get a different perspective. Jaye: I do sit in the bleachers; I can point out my seat! Joe: In the outfield. The bleachers. Jaye: Oh my gosh, yeah—that would be amazing. I need to do that. [laughs] What are some specific places around town that you enjoy? Joe: We enjoy Oak Street, walking up and down there, shopping a little bit. Rush Street, Michigan Avenue… I would say we just enjoy downtown and everything it has to offer. We have our own ocean, we’ve got a great bike trail—I love riding all the way to the turnaround at Hollywood Beach. So I don’t know, it’s hard to pinpoint: the art, the culture of the city, everything. You’ve got to embrace and imbibe in all of Chicago because it’s all there. I’m enamored with living in a big city for the first time, and then you magnify that because I do believe Chicago is probably the most magnificent city in our country. Jaye: I want to explore [more]. I want to go to the museums, maybe go see a play. I really do want to hit all those places. Joe: We haven’t explored all of that yet. Jaye: I do like walking around in different neighborhoods. I’m going to have to arrange something. Joe: She’s going to Mary Tyler Moore around Chicago. Throw her hat in the air. Jaye: [laughs] Definitely. What keeps you driven after all your success? Joe: Today, tomorrow… I don’t really dwell on past successes in a [manner] that by having had them you lack motivation for the next day. I’m really into the word “growth,” as you know really well. I am uncomfortable—I’m using that word from personal experience. It’s not about being driven by wanting more—I’m driven by accomplishment in the field that I’ve chosen in a sense that you always want to be recognized as among the best, and you love to do it. Listen, I haven’t really wrapped my head around last year yet; I probably won’t for several years. So it’s about today. It’s about this group. It’s about now. Jaye: OK. And lastly, what’s your message to Cubs fans as we kick off the season? Joe: Be uncomfortable. Be uncomfortable with us. Don’t be satisfied with what just happened. Of course, we’re all pleased, and it’s great that the burden’s been lifted, but I want us all to continually want to do that on an annual basis. So I want the Cubs fans to be as uncomfortable as we are.

Take note! Spring’s hottest runway trends blend perfectly with the season’s most intoxicating eaux. BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF CRAWFORD

Gone are the days of committing yourself to a single signature scent. Like your closet—filled with wardrobe basics, but transformed each season with on-trend pieces that ensure your personal style evolves with the times and isn’t stuck in the past—your fragrances should be a means of self-expression. Each one reflects a day’s particular mood. “Fragrance and fashion are historically linked,” says legendary perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. “I do believe that one should have a fragrance wardrobe, a mix of ageless classics and fashionable trends.” Kelly St. John, VP of beauty at Neiman Marcus, agrees: “A fragrance wardrobe is expected and encouraged, allowing our customers to select something that fits the day’s inspiration.” It’s only fitting, then, that the season’s four strongest fashion looks—lively, retro beachwear; sultry, romantic florals; bold, sleek power dressing; and chic athleisure with a vintage twist—pair so seamlessly with today’s boldest scents.

FUN IN THE SUN THIS SEASON’S RETRO, BEACH-INSPIRED APPAREL CALLS FOR LOTS OF ZEST. Sunny beaches and succulent fruits came to mind when models wafted down the Spring 2017 runways in retro swim caps and lemon-printed frocks for Miu Miu and Altuzarra. And the latest fragrances are conjuring up the same optimistic outlook: Ralph Lauren’s new Summer Blossom, says master perfumer Harry Fremont, “provokes a moment of luminous happiness” with its notes of sparkling mandarin and guava, while Marc Jacobs’s Daisy Dream Kiss Edition is bursting with grapefruit and blackberry. Light is a focus of both Louis Vuitton’s Mille Feux, which blends raspberry and leather, and Sole di Positano, a sun-drenched citrus juice from Tom Ford. And Michael Kors’s Turquoise will transport you to the sea, thanks to a fleur de sel accord harvested from the cerulean waters off the French coast. SMELL THE ROSES FROM BEAUTY COUNTERS TO CLOTHING RACKS, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ROMANTIC BLOOM THIS SEASON. It is no coincidence that roses are cropping up left and right in fragrance. “Pink was a really big trend in ready-towear,” says Roopal Patel, fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue, “so it’s interesting to see that rose as a fragrance was top of mind for a lot of [perfume] labels.” In honor of her parents’ love story, Tory Burch pairs rose with warm patchouli in Love Relentlessly, and Armani’s Sì Rose blends the bloom with sensual base notes like amber, reminiscent of the sultry sheaths seen on Dolce & Gabbana’s spring runway. For an edgier take on the flower, Dior’s Poison Girl boasts bitter orange, and Ex Nihilo’s Devil Tender starts spicy with pink pepper berries. Aerin’s Garden Rose, with green notes of geranium blended with various roses, recalls the sheer, embroidered frocks at Alexander McQueen. clockwise from top: Love Relentlessly, Tory Burch (1.7 oz. for $86). From Boss and Salvatore Ferragamo to Tory Burch, power dressing via crisp and sleek suiting was all the rage on spring catwalks. Reinforcing the look of soft fabrications with strong silhouettes are fierce scents that finely balance both sides of the spectrum, such as the opulent, white florals and powerful sandalwood of Gucci Bamboo Limited Edition. Likewise, Good Girl from Carolina Herrera enjoys the irony of a bright jasmine and deep cocoa combo. Fleur Universelle 1900 from Lalique’s Noir Premier collection is all-around intense with a fiery mix of cinnamon and cardamom, and Jo Malone London’s Bloomsbury Set honors Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster, and their fellow English intellectuals with distinctive blends like Tobacco & Mandarin. Viktor & Rolf also pairs vastly different notes with iris and ink in Dirty Trick—a combination, says perfumer Marie Salamagne, that creates “a distinctive and extraordinary depth.”

GAME, SET, EAU! ATHLEISURE HAS FOUND ITS MATCH IN FRESH, CITRUSY SCENTS. When sporting designs from Max Mara or Lacoste’s Spring 2017 vintage and tennis-inspired collections, up your game with clean fragrances that boast notes of energizing citrus. Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian blended lime and cool mint oils with mimosa blossoms to create Aqua Celestia for his eponymous collection. Inspired by the blues of the sky and sea, the scent “explores a new territory of freshness,” says Kurkdjian. Hermès’s Eau des Merveilles Bleue touches on the same theme but mixes sea spray with woody notes, and Elizabeth Arden’s White Tea blends a sea breeze accord with white tea extract. It’s all about Italian bergamot with Guerlain’s vibrant Bergamote Calabria, while perfumer Daniela Andrier also used citruses from Italy when creating Prada’s Candy L’Eau, but she added a tender floral accord with sweet vanilla for a fragrance that inspires wearers, she says, “to seek out life’s endless pleasures.”

WRIGHT HERE, WRIGHT NOW OAK PARK CELEBRATES FRAN LLOYD WRIGHT’S SESQUICENTENNIAL IN STYLE WITH THE DELUXE WRIGHT PLUS 150 HOUSEWALK.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES CAULFIELD, COURTESY OF FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT TRUST

BY STEPHEN OSTROWSKI

From the looming, looping Guggenheim Museum in New York City to the modular Hollyhock House in LA, Frank Lloyd Wright’s oeuvre is aesthetic ambition without equal. It’s why his cluster of 29 structures in leafy, sedate western suburb Oak Park—which boasts the world’s highest concentration of Wright residences—is all the more special. Consider it but one of Wright’s many stops on an oftevolving design spectrum. “You see in Wright a figure like Picasso in the 20th century, who moves through many different styles and periods,” contextualizes Celeste Adams, president and CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust. On May 20, Adams and company toast the 150th anniversary of the architect’s birth with the Wright Plus 150 Housewalk, boasting exclusive interior tours of 11 structures by Wright and his contemporaries that ribbon a walkable circuit off the town’s Chicago Avenue—all anchored by the master’s famous home and studio. Befitting the milestone anniversary, this year’s housewalk ups the ante, offering a day trip to Wright’s Penwern and Black Point Estate and Gardens retreats in Wisconsin as well as opening the doors to four private, rarely seen Wright spaces, three of which reflect his work

within the Prairie School aesthetic— from the sprawling roof of the Arthur B. Heurtley House to the Japanese influences of the Hills DeCaro House. Adams also singles out the Laura Gale House (“a milestone in 20th-century architecture”) as a particular can’t-miss: Featured on the housewalk for the first time since 2009, the home evokes conventional Prairie tenets—pronounced angularity, respectful integration with the surrounding landscape— while foreshadowing Wright’s future work: “[With its] two large porches that project from the front of the house, it’s sometimes seen as a prototype of Fallingwater,” notes Adams, referring to Wright’s iconic Pennsylvania retreat. The parallel underscores the event’s cachet: To tour Oak Park in 2017 is to not only experience Wright’s turn-of-the-century vision but is to be privy to his later, genre-busting blueprint for modern design and architecture. And while the wealth of attractions is potentially dizzying (countless hours can be spent dissecting a single Wright structure, much less 11), at just a mile long the circuit can be tackled in a day—but with an estimated 2,500 ticket holders, expect to jockey with Wright worshippers for prime space. “Photos don’t do justice,” says Adams. “In the work of Frank, you have to experience the building.” May 20, 9 am to 5 pm; flwright.org/wrightplus

AS COCO PAZZO CELEBRATES 25 YEARS, OWNER JACK WEISS DISHES ON THE COMFORTABLE DESIGN AESTHETIC THAT KEEPS HIS RESTAURANTS TIMELESSLY CHIC. BY J.P. ANDERSON

When Coco Pazzo opened its heavy oak doors in 1992, the city’s dining scene was a different world—now-sizzling Hubbard Street was all but deserted, and locals’ idea of Italian food was bowls of pasta and red sauce. Things have changed, but Jack Weiss’s rustic-chic Tuscan spot is still going strong, celebrating its 25th anniversary this spring. Credit the restaurant’s accomplished cuisine, from tender wood-oven-roasted octopus to signature spaghetti AOP, and Weiss’s passion for service—but also its timelessly modern design. “There’s a lot of drama in the room,” says Weiss, surveying the lofty space, whose exposed beams, heavy velvet curtains, open kitchen (“one of the first in Chicago”), and walls of bottle paintings by Giorgio Morandi still

draw daily crowds of politicians, athletes, and deal-closing suits. Notes Weiss, “It’s a room where all people are comfortable.” A dozen blocks away, Weiss’s newly relocated Coco Pazzo Cafe expresses that same comfortably chic aesthetic, incorporating the 23-year-old restaurant’s beloved Modigliani-inspired wall murals into a striking, light-filled room— a lovely, lively counterpoint to its more refined sister restaurant. Two different spaces, but one shared passion: Marrying excellent food with great service, all in a stimulating room. Sums up Weiss, “I want people to have the best experience possible.” Coco Pazzo: 300 W. Hubbard St., 312-836-0900; cocopazzochicago.com; Coco Pazzo Cafe: 212 E. DESIGN DOYENNE INTERIORS WHIZ MICHAEL DEL PIERO SHARES HER MUST-HAVE HOME DÉCOR PIECES FOR SPRING ’17.

“I don’t like a lot of color,” states interior designer Michael Del Piero—and so it goes for the Chicago native’s new West Town headquarters, whose unassuming all-black exterior surrenders to two airy levels of white-walled industrial chic. But the contents of her first-floor shop are splashier, with rare pieces ranging from

understated objets d’art to grand antiques. Here, the namesake of Michael Del Piero Good Design dissects her recent favorite finds. Del Piero herself designed a lithe, two-tiered iron chandelier ($5,250), inspired by a similar piece she spotted in a Belgian barn years ago. “I loved it and I never got it out of my

head,” recalls the 58-yearold Near North resident, “so when I got back, I thought, I want to reproduce that.” Del Piero generally deals in muted earth tones, but a sculptural, 20th-century French ceramic ($2,600) signed by its makers, Andrée and Michel Hirlet, was “so textural and interesting” that she brought it

home from the renowned Paul Bert Serpette antiques market in Paris. Discovered in disrepair at a market in the south of France, a 17th-century French armchair ($2,800) has since been reupholstered with modern Manuel Canovas fabric. “There was barely any fabric left [on it originally],” Del Piero says, quipping, “Basically,

I was buying wood.” Although a 19th-century leather- and brass-accented jewelry box ($700)—procured from a film prop provider in Germany—has interior storage, Del Piero emphasizes its ornamental appeal. “We’re not [literal] here—at all,” she laughs. 428 N. SPACE BROKERS’ ROUNDTABLE

LUXE OVERLOAD THERE ARE SO MANY LUXURY HOMES ON THE MARKET IN CHICAGO, PRICES ARE STARTING TO DROP. DOES THAT MEAN IT’S TIME TO BUY?

Luxury listings in Chicago’s swankiest neighborhoods are rising in number, sitting on the market, then dropping in price. Buyers are playing waiting games to snag the best pricing, yet sellers are still listing their places. Why—and what’s the best way to buy right? To understand the situation, we talked to two of Chicago’s shrewdest luxury brokers—Berkshire Hathaway KoenigRubloff’s Melinda Jakovich (312-953-3425) and Coldwell Banker’s Karen V. Peterson (312-282-2933). Tell us about the numbers. KP: From February to December 2016, for Near North properties [i.e. Streeterville, Gold Coast, Old Town, and River North] at $1 million to $10 million, there were 102 attached listings averaging $2.465 million and 268 days on the market, and 13 single-family homes averaging $5.047 million and 376 days on the market. In the first 10 weeks of 2017, we had 281 attached listings averaging $2.308 million and 203 days on the market and 26 listings averaging $4.416 million and 357 days on the market. For attached, that’s almost a 175 percent inventory increase and a 6 percent price drop; for single families it’s a 100 percent increase and 12 percent price drop. MJ: The months supply of inventory (MSI) is up about

10 percent in homes over a million but only up 3 percent in homes under a million. Any specific reason why this is happening now? KP: People sat on the sidelines for much of last year because of elections, but now we have a hot stock market and we’re finally past the pre-recession prices. So everything from divorce, death, relocation, downsizing, upsizing, schooling, and more is at play. How are sellers and buyers responding? MJ: Brokers are helping their sellers be creative. One strategy is to rent those ultra-high-end homes to high-profile clients, sometimes with options to buy. Some listings are reduced. I have two that are great values right now— a five-bed, six-bath home at 1440 North Dearborn Parkway for $6.85 million with two wine cellars, a two-car garage, a rooftop deck, and more, and a recently reduced condo at

118 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

161 East Chicago Avenue for $2.925 million that’s three combined units at more than 4,000 square feet. KP: Brokers are also helping their buyers find the best value, which is often in resale rather than new construction. Hardly any new developments in the luxury market are under $1,000 per square foot. But you can find remarkable value in resales for $600 to $800 per square foot, and amenities that you can’t get in new construction—such as those wine cellars, outside spaces, and multiple parking spaces. We are marketing two such properties: an eight-bed, eight-and-a-half-bath home at 1939 North Howe Street, which is on three lots with multiple outside spaces and almost 11,000 square feet above grade. Another great value for the space and location is 55 West Goethe Street, No. 1248, a four-bed, four-bath townhome that is almost 3,500 square feet for $1.295 million.

A stately brownstone in the heart of the Gold Coast, 1440 North Dearborn Parkway dazzles with designer finishes, charming rooms, a beautifully landscaped yard, a rooftop master suite, and more.

IT TAKES TWO THE HUSBAND-AND-WIFE DUO BEHIND SCHWUNG HOME ARE DESIGNING FOR THEMSELVES— AND THE FUTURE. BY OUSSAMA ZAHR

Looking at Dominique Sente and Rudi Nijssen’s first collection for RH (formerly Restoration Hardware)— a dazzling set of light fixtures made of hand-blown glass globes, lustrous brass, and streamlined retro forms—you could almost guess that her background is goldsmithing and his is antiques. And you’d be right. You might also guess, based on how well the pieces fit into RH’s sumptuous aesthetic, that the brand was heavily involved in their creation. And there you’d be wrong. “One of the most amazing parts of our collaboration is that RH gives us carte blanche,” says Nijssen. “There are no limitations.” RH has been seeking out—and promoting—independent artisans at a time when consumers have become more interested in craftsmanship. Nijssen and Sente are married and work out of their firm, Schwung Home, in Poland, where a six-month creative process takes them from mood boards and sketches to the final prototype. RH isn’t even involved until they present the finished design. “Our only desire,” says Sente, “has been to create pieces that will escape trends, pieces with an architectural and poetic vibe. Part of the source of our inspiration for this collection was the décor of some movie sets—mostly from the ’60s and ’70s.” While Sente has helped Nijssen with previous RH collections that have borne his name, this is the first time they share equal billing. Says the couple, “Two can do better than one—like our icons, Charles and Ray Eames!” 1300 N. Dearborn St., 312-475-9116; rhmodern.com

Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo celebrates after scoring what would become the game-winning run in the 10th inning of Game Seven of the 2016 World Series against the Cleveland Indians.

Few Chicagoans felt the sting of the Cubs’ World Series drought more poignantly than Harry Caray’s Restaurant Group CEO Grant DePorter. The company went so far as to purchase and publicly detonate the dreaded “Bartman ball” in 2004, then served the remnants in a “curse-ending sauce.” So it’s only fitting that the group’s own Chicago Sports Museum has snagged an incredible array of souvenirs from last year’s championship run. “Sports is a religion in Chicago, and sports memorabilia are its holy relics,” explains DePorter, who has compiled what is believed to be the world’s largest collection of Cubs World Series memorabilia. Gems include Addison Russell’s World Series grand slam ball, Kris Bryant’s cleats, David Ross’s catcher’s gear, and Joe Maddon’s “We Did Not Suck” T-shirt. From white-hot dining and drinking destinations to a theater district that’s never been more bustling, this historic district south of the Chicago River now more than ever truly comes to life when the suits go home.
