PICTURE PERFECT FROM HIGH-FASHION SHOOTS TO DAZZLING CITYSCAPES, CHICAGO SHUTTERBUG ALINA TSVOR CAPTURES THE CITY’S STYLISH SIDE.

“We all have emotions and we’re all looking for something to connect with,” says 26-year-old photographer Alina Tsvor—and connect with Tsvor audiences have, to the dizzying tally of nearly 110,000 Instagram followers. It’s easy to see why: If ultra-airy is the en vogue

aesthetic, this Belarus-born Pilsen resident bucks the trend with her brooding, meditative shots of Chicago style, architecture, and street life. And beyond an enviable social media following, that work has translated into collaborations with big-name brands like adidas, Nike,

and Beats by Dre, as well as online projects for W and The Atlantic. But it’s Tsvor’s portraiture that particularly leaps off the page, where the Columbia College alum renders her subjects in seductively somber settings evocative of high-fashion glossies.

“[I am] a quieter person, sometimes a little dark… I think my work translates that,” says the Nikon D800 enthusiast. To wit: In one especially captivating series, Tsvor—who counts Mario Testino, Gregory Crewdson, and Annie Leibovitz among her influences—captures a

model who, in repose at the Stony Island Arts Bank, projects a sense of melancholy detachment that suggests isolation while inviting further study. In a screen-saturated world, Tsvor’s touch is welcomingly human. alinatsvor.com; @alinatsvor

accolades for her astonishing turn playing two roles in The Little Foxes. We’re thrilled to toast her success both on stage and screen (she’s now generating tons of buzz with Jason Bateman in the new Netflix show Ozark), not to mention her appreciation for all things Chicago. That’s just the tip of the iceberg for our Fall Fashion 2017 issue. The city’s new cultural season gets started with a bang, from worldclass art at EXPO Chicago to the return of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. And befitting our theme, there’s fashion at every turn, from a spotlight on globally minded local designer Anadil Johnson to a look at the must-have, made-in-Chicago denim trend and a sumptuous feature on the season’s latest looks. When I was 11, I made up my mind: I was going to be an actor. A fifth grader, I had just made my debut in a high school production of Oliver—delivering my single line with all the dramatic intrigue of a soliloquy—and I was totally hooked. The brilliant lights, the electric tension backstage, the hushed silence of a crowd hanging on every word, the rapturous cacophony of applause… We were just kids and the audience was mostly our parents, but to me it felt like Broadway. Ultimately I chose the page over the stage, but the experience kick-started a lifelong passion for theater that continues to this day. Our cover star, the incredible Laura Linney, knows the rush of the stage more than most: As the acclaimed actress (who considers Chicago a second home) revealed to me in a delightful, far-ranging conversation for our cover story (page 110), she considers her training at Juilliard the most important thing that has happened in her career, and is still receiving

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND PUBLISHER

I’ve been getting so many questions about our new parent company, Modern Luxury, and how it has impacted business. Here are just a few of the incredibly exciting things on the horizon, a direct result of the acquisition: In 2018, we’ll increase our frequency to eight issues a year, up from six—a direct reflection of a growing demand for print from readers and advertisers. It means delivering even more quality editorial coverage, as well as deepening relationships with longstanding partners like @Properties, Jameson Sotheby’s, Baird & Warner, Constellation Brands, Marshall Pierce & Co., Beam Suntory, MillerCoors, James & Sons Jewelers, Burdi, Loquercio Automotive, and so many other valued long-term supporters. And, accordingly, we’ll double our staff to the size required to continue to deliver the city’s best content, experiences, and

brand activations. As I’m prone to say—with our upcoming Winter Issue marking the start of our 10th year in business, no less—you grow or go. There’s even more thrilling news ahead: In September, we’ll toast the opening of The Sinclair, the latest project from real estate developers Randy and Steve Fifield of Fifield & Co. And we’ll help Lennar open the doors to its new Oak Park space, The Emerson. Both properties are sleek, sexy, and demonstrate that, while summer might be wrapping up, there’s plenty to love about the great indoors. Please keep asking me, “How’s business?” My answer is, “We’re making magazines great again, here at Michigan Avenue, a Modern Luxury publication!”

Saying goodbye to summer is a whole lot easier when you consider all that’s coming in the new cultural season—like these eight absolute must-see and -do happenings for fall. Art and architecture aficionados have a particularly sweet fall ahead of them. At the Renaissance Society, there’s the Jennifer Packer exhibition “Tenderheaded” (September 9 through November 5, 5811 S. Ellis Ave., 773-7028670; renaissancesociety.org), figurative paintings that toy with abstraction and read like fading frescoes, or the imprints of shadows. On a poppier front, graffiti and cartoons inform the freewheeling imagery of Chicago’s own Hebru Brantley, whose trademark goggled kids suggest a marriage of Speed Racer and Margaret Keane’s wide-eyed waifs of the 1960s, and who gets a solo show, “Hebru Brantley: Forced Field,” at the Elmhurst Art Museum (September 9 through November 26, 150 Cottage Hill Ave., Elmhurst, 630-834-0202; elmhurstart museum.org). “Make New History” is the theme of this year’s Chicago Architecture Biennial (chicagoarchitecture biennial.org), which includes

Grand Ave., 312-595-5600; chicago shakes.com). At the Auditorium, the groundbreaking Shen Wei Dance Arts troupe makes its Chicago debut with a program including a take on Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (September 23–24, 50 E. Grand Ave., 312-867-9220; expochicago.com) is also setting up shop across the city, including a much-anticipated installation in the Roundhouse at the DuSable Museum of African American History (September 6 through January 7), arguably the least known of Daniel Burnham’s buildings. “It’s a pop-up from an amazing venue in Paris, the Palais de Tokyo, with work from Chicago artists and artists from abroad,” notes Expo president and director

And before the urge to hibernate hits, drop by the Bean in Millennium Park on October 1 for an unprecedented civic gesture courtesy of Pulitzer Prizewinning composer David Lang: crowd out, a choral piece for 1,000 voices performed by folks from across the city (201 E. Randolph St.; crowdout chicago.org). Sounds like an outstanding autumn.

UPSTAIRS FROM WEST LOOP DINING HOT SPOT HONEY’S, THE HIVE IS FAST BECOMING A PRIMO PLACE FOR KEEPING AN EYE ON THE CITY’S A-LIST. BY STEPHEN OSTROWSKI

When Takashi Murakami followed up the MCA’s recent 50th anniversary fête with an after-party at The Hive, it all but crowned the pocket-sized tippling space as the city’s de facto see-andbe-seen room. Not that it needed formal coronation—upstairs from chic restaurant Honey’s and accoutered with lived-in-but-luxe sofas, sexy side tables, and a strikingly simple marble bar, the room’s unstuffy style solidified its cool-kid cachet from the jump. “We wanted it to be a comfy vibe, in the vein of a bohemian traveler,” observes managing partner Justin Furman of the Venetian plaster-finished hideaway, where hip patrons of all stripes unwind over impeccable craft cocktails. To orchestrate the atmosphere, Furman kept it in the family,

tapping his wife, Jenn Dixon, for design duties. A fashion designer by trade, Dixon sourced the room’s signature pieces via auction (the imposing Napoleon portrait near the entry), Craigslist (the refinished hutch mooring the hallway that leads to Black Dove Lifestyle-designed bathrooms), or, in the case of select throw pillows, her own hands (“I made most of those out of old kimonos and velvet curtains,” she notes). And pairing alcove-anchoring sofas with ottomans and other petite accents was done for reasons both aesthetic and social. Explains Dixon: “Smaller pieces of furniture lend themselves easier to conversations.” A stylish talking point, indeed. 1111 W. Lake St., 312-877-5929; honeyschicago.com

With a lived-in, chicly comfortable atmosphere, The Hive has become a favored tippling spot for A-listers from across the city.

MIZRAHI WITH A ZING FASHION DESIGNER TURNED CABARET PERFORMER ISAAC MIZRAHI BRINGS HIS LARGER-THAN-LIFE PERSONALITY TO THE CHICAGO STAGE. BY J.P. ANDERSON

It’s not so far from the fashion runway to the stage—especially when you’re Isaac Mizrahi, the Brooklyn-bred designer who rocketed to fame in the ’90s at the dawn of the supermodel age and starred in the instant-classic documentary Unzipped. Having long dabbled in cabaret at various NYC venues (including an acclaimed February run at the iconic Café Carlyle), Mizrahi is hitting the road with Does This Song Make Me Look Fat?, his not-so-family-friendly stage act. As he prepares for his Chicago debut at City Winery, the Project Runway All Stars judge recently chatted with Michigan Avenue about the thrill of performing, his changing relationship with fashion, and what makes cabaret such a kick.

What should the audience expect? It’s not G-rated—how does that sound? There’s a louche kind of quality to the story and [audiences] might not expect that, but maybe now they should. Have you spent much time here? I used to spend tons of time in

70  MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

After an acclaimed February 2017 run at Café Carlyle in New York City, fashion figure extraordinaire Isaac Mizrahi is bringing his cabaret act to Chicago.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID ANDRAKO

Playing the Carlyle is one thing, but touring is another level. I’m scared to death. I’m not scared of Chicago—Chicago to me is very much like New York. I think it’ll be fun. God knows I’ve had difficult audiences, but no matter what, it’s always worth it.

SCENE MUST-SEE Chicago—there used to be this great store called Ultimo and I would go there like three times a year. Sometimes I invent reasons to [come here] because it’s such a fun, cool-looking city with a vibrant art scene and a big grasp on culture.

What do you enjoy most about performing? The first moments of getting up onstage. You’re so scared but energized and excited to be there—you’re looking right out of the the cannon’s mouth and just about to be shot into oblivion. And really, every performance is that. Who are some performers that have inspired you? One of my best friends in the world, Sandra Bernhard. And Elaine Stritch, Eartha Kitt, Bobby Short… Everybody has their own style. What’s great about cabaret is that whatever you prepare, you’ve got in your back pocket, but the thing that happens when you get in that room with those people is what happens. And to me, it’s definitely more exciting when you’re not sure what the show’s going to be. It’s a live thing— every show is different. September 29 at City Winery, 1200 W. Randolph St., 312733-9463; citywinery.com

How has your relationship with fashion changed since your Unzipped days? I feel a lot more resolve. I’m almost embarrassed that people think I cared that much about what was in and out, because that’s what a fashion designer is supposed to really care about. Like, ‘Uh-oh, opaque hose this season, not sheer black hose.’ I don’t care about that stuff, and frankly I find it’s a dead idea. What I loved was textiles and the design of something, and I still do.

SAVORY SURPRISE SPICY, SALTY, EARTHY, AND HERBACEOUS— UNEXPECTEDLY SAVORY FLAVORS ARE THE NEW DESSERT STARS AT SOME OF CHICAGO’S HOTTEST RESTAURANTS. BY AMBER GIBSON

When it comes to desserts in Chicago, one thing is certain: Savory is the new sweet—and top chefs are pulling out the stops to explore this buzzy new flavor profile. Like Fifty/50 Group executive pastry chef Chris Teixeira, whose savory s’mores at Steadfast (120 W. Monroe St., 312801-8899; steadfast chicago.com) feature a rosemary marshmallow and rosemary-infused milk-chocolate ganache.

74  MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

Says Teixeira, “I wanted to show that a flavor as strong as rosemary can still be delicate.” Cheese meets dessert at Bin 36 (161 N. Jefferson St., 312-995-6560; bin36.com): Pecorino Romano panna cotta is topped with appleand-pink-peppercorn gelée and crunchy candied walnuts for a light transition from savory to sweet. Even chocolate gets the savory treatment at Old Town’s Cocoa + Co.

(1651 N. Wells St., 312624-8540; cocoaandco .com), where Kim Hack spikes her most unique drinking chocolate not with booze but a medley of spices—freshly ground cumin, coriander, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, and cloves, from The Spice House—for a savory, Moroccan-inspired drinking chocolate. And at Fulton Market District sizzler Elske (1350 W. Randolph St.,

312-733-1314; elske restaurantchicago.com), Anna Posey’s pralineinspired caramelized sunflower seed parfait is kissed with fermented sour honey and finished with licorice crumble and bee pollen, eschewing sweetness for an herbaceous nuttiness. “A well-executed menu can transition easily from savory to sweet,” insists Posey. “Using some ‘savory’ ingredients helps that transition.”

.

Not so sweet: Chicago restaurants embracing the savory dessert trend include (clockwise from left) Elske, which features a sunflower seed parfait with sour honey, licorice, and bee pollen; Cocoa + Co., whose Moroccan Spice drinking chocolate is spiked with black pepper and cumin; and new Loop fine dining spot Steadfast.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT NOTABLE CHICAGO PERSONALITIES BILLY DEC AND FABIO VIVIANI STAMP THEIR FOODIE-CENTRIC BRANDS ON A PAIR OF AMBITIOUS SIDE PROJECTS. BY ELAINE GLUSAC

Side hustles aren’t new for celebrity chefs, but as barriers to media entry increasingly dissolve, local notables are stepping out of the kitchen to satisfy the content-hungry. Recently, restaurateur and man about town Billy Dec debuted his foodie podcast, “The Meal of Your Life” (free on iTunes), holding one-onone conversations with

chefs, restaurateurs, and celebrities about their most memorable meals. His bestie David Schwimmer kicked off the series, identifying his childhood favorite as “the average meal at the family table.” Says Dec, “I think it’s an important time for people to gather, talk, understand, celebrate, and learn more about each other, different cultures [and] perspectives,

life—all of which I hope this promotes.” Meanwhile, Siena Tavern dynamo and Top Chef alum Fabio Viviani has doubled down on side projects, designing a lexicon of oozing cheeseburgers and decadent donuts in the seductive new Food Porn Emoji (also free on iTunes), and channeling his ineffable energy into a new YouTube

show, “Fabio’s Kitchen.” In each weekly episode, Viviani creates a unique dish ranging from nonna’s meatballs to modern mac and cheese, many drawn from his new book, Fabio’s 30-Minute Italian. “When it comes to TV, you have to wait for a network to give you a show,” says Viviani. “I’m not in the business of waiting for business—I create my own!”

CHICAGO BLUES THANKS TO A TRIO OF WINDY CITY LABELS, CHICAGO’S DENIM SCENE IS HAVING A REAL MOMENT.

BY MURAT OZTASKIN

With our history as a city of workers, Chicagoans have had a long affinity with the consummate workwear: blue jeans. Now, three Windy City brands are reestablishing denim as a local staple, producing native pieces for the city’s modern workforce—and reenergizing Chicago’s manufacturing industry while they’re at it. Back in 1926, 25 percent of all apparel sold in the US was made in Chicago, notes Rob McMillan, 33, who last year established Dearborn Denim & Apparel in a former industrial laundry in Garfield Park. There, Dearborn’s 17 employees knock out some 110 pairs of handcrafted stretch jeans a day using 100-percent domestic materials ($59–$64), with slim, tailored, and relaxed fits for men and skinny and straight-leg for women. Dark and light blue, black, and khaki washes are joined this fall by shorts, a jean jacket, and more women’s fits. Manufacturing its own clothing and selling directly to customers—via Dearborn’s website (dearborndenim.us) and new Hyde Park storefront (1504 E. 53rd St., 872-465-3188), which opened in May—makes premium denim affordable, says McMillan, a North Side native who, frustrated with the denim options available to him, left his career as a bond trader to “build a better apparel brand.” “We’re

Chicago designer Maria Pinto is among several local fashion figures embracing denim for fall, with looks like this Dunaway denim dress, $325, Hutton skinny jean, $295, and Streep denim wrap, $295.

trying to be as inclusive as possible,” he says. Another local denim player is two-year-old Mugsy Jeans, which like Dearborn was born from its founder, Leo Tropeano, not being able to “find anything I liked that was stylish and comfortable.” With the introduction of its signature FLx denim—a warp-, shrink-, and wrinkle-resistant blend of cotton, rayon, and polyester—late last year, Mugsy, which designs only men’s jeans ($98), came into its own, says Tropeano. Summer expansions like shorts and a new athletic fit are bolstered this fall with more new colors, including neutral gray, tawny port, and ink black. An e-commerce retailer, Mugsy put down firm Chicago roots in May with the opening of its first by-appointment brick-and-mortar location (1118 W. Fulton Mkt., Ste. 200; mugsyjeans.com). “Although it would have been easier [to do it elsewhere], starting here was a very important aspect,” says Tropeano, 29, a former international tax consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers who moved from New York to Chicago,

his wife’s hometown, five years ago. “We’re all in on Chicago.” Hometown high fashion is even getting in on the local denim craze, with Chicago native Maria Pinto (833 W. Washington Blvd., 888-8682057; m2057.com) taking a different approach: While her new M2057 capsule collection ($295–$495) includes both skinny and high-waist/ wide-leg jeans, it also features denim tops, dresses, skirts, wraps, and (new for fall) a jacket. Named for iconic 20th-century women—think Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall, and Meryl Streep—the collection is made using an ultrafine Italian cotton (tightly woven with a touch of elastic) and produced in Chicago and New York. “These pieces are a blank canvas, so they can go very casual but also be really elevated,” says Pinto, who has designed clothing for the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama. “Being an American designer, and looking at American women… We wear a lot of denim. It helps ground things,” she adds. A mainstay for all, born in Chicago.

STYLE DYNAMIC DUO From the Field Museum (left) to beneath the El tracks on Southport Avenue (bottom), entrepreneurs Sarah Azzouzi and Kyla Embrey (inset, from left) are bringing a dose of chic to all corners of the city with on-themove pop-up Lost Girls Vintage.

REVVED-UP RETAIL WITH MOBILE BOUTIQUE LOST GIRLS VINTAGE, AN ENTERPRISING WEST SIDE PAIR HAS FOUND FIRM FOOTING IN THE CHICAGO FASHION SCENE.

If fashion is about wanderlust and escapism—the notion that style can take you to new worlds, both imaginary and material—then Kyla Embrey and Sarah Azzouzi have captured it to a T: Since 2013, the Chicago pair have racked up literal mileage selling throwback threads from their Craigslist-sourced 1976 Dodge RV as coproprietors of roving shop Lost Girls Vintage. Their inventory? “Stuff that’s wearable, not costume-y,” says the 33-yearold Embrey, adding, “We’re most interested in pieces that are going to look right at home with [anything] contemporary.” Although the store’s schedule is essentially weather-permitting, expect to

spot Azzouzi (who describes her style as “’70s with sneakers”) and Embrey (“I gravitate toward Americana and Western wear”) parked outside go-tos like Antique Taco in Wicker Park and Rider for Life in the West Loop. For such nomadic circumstances, social media has been key. “I don’t think we’d be where we are without it,” notes Azzouzi, 29. “You’re reaching the world through this network, and it’s amazing.” Fall is an especially plum time of year for the pair. “We sell a lot of leather boots, jackets, and accessories,” says Embrey. “Seasonality is really important when you’re selling out of a truck.” Full speed ahead! lostgirlsvintage.com

Midwest connection: Motor City superstar Shinola is bringing its American-made watches (including the insta-classic 47mm Runwell, $550, RIGHT), bicycles, and leather goods to the Gold Coast.

A TRIO OF HIGH-PROFILE NEW STORE OPENINGS HAVE CHICAGO FASHIONISTAS CHOMPING AT THE BIT FOR FALL.

Is there a better time to revamp your wardrobe than autumn? We think not. And this season—from trendy womenswear to high-end moto jackets and handcrafted watches— Chicagoans will have plenty of chic pieces to choose from. Stylish women’s fashion house Aritzia has opened a sleek new Gold Coast location (923 N. Rush St.; aritzia.com) that will serve as the new Chicago flagship and will feature an expansive assortment of designs. “We’re excited to grow our presence in Chicago,” says Founder and CEO Brian Hill of the 7,800-square-foot space, “especially at such an iconic fashion location as Rush Street.” Two blocks away, Shinola is the place for custom American-made timepieces, monogrammed accessories, and more from the burgeoning Detroit brand, whose new Gold Coast location (1009 N. Rush St.; shinola.com) is double the size of its Bucktown shop. “Chicago is a very important market for us,” says Shinola President Jacques Panis. “Manufacturing is in the DNA here.” Further from the Mag Mile, edgier types can opt for motorcycle jackets, leather shoes, and T-shirts from Schott NYC, which recently opened the doors to its first Chicago outpost (1509 N. Milwaukee Ave., 773-7998250; schottnyc.com). “Chicago is the real deal,” enthuses Jason Schott, COO and fourth-generation leader of the 1913-established family biz. “People here appreciate quality durable goods, and we want to give them a home base in the Midwest to have access to our entire collection.”

Artfully unkempt: “Sometimes, the beauty of a moment is in the imperfection,” says Val Garland, makeup artist behind the on-trend lips at Giambattista Valli’s Fall runway show. BELOW: Powermatte Lip Pigment, $26, NARS.

How to achieve the chic, natural eyebrow look taking Chicago by storm. Just as accents vary from city to city, the same holds true for eyebrow trends. “Each [region] takes its beauty cues from different places, which makes looks super distinct,” explains Jared Bailey, global brow expert with cosmetics giant Benefit. And when it comes to the Windy City, says Bailey, it’s a natural brow that’s all the rage. “In Chicago, women like to enhance their natural beauty,” says Bailey. “Natural brow styles can be seen from the Magnificent Mile all the way to Wrigleyville.” Opt for a product that will create a “natural wash of color” throughout the eyebrow shape, like Benefit’s Goof Proof Brow Pencil ($24). 852 W. BLURRED LINES FALL’S NEW MODERN LIP IS PERFECTLY IMPERFECT.

Forget “Instagram lips,” the all-too-ubiquitous look combining lots of lip liner with matte lipstick—this season’s trendiest makeup trend is intentionally unpolished. From Rosie Assoulin to Giambattista Valli to Preen, smudged, blurred, and faded lipstick in an array of red tones

was the star of this fall’s fashion shows, making lived-in pouts en vogue. “Sometimes the beauty and modernity of a moment is in the imperfection,” says veteran makeup artist Val Garland, who created the “just-snogged” lip look for Preen, as well as Giambattista Valli’s

patchy, high-voltage gloss. Garland suggests first applying your lip color as you normally would, then using a fluffy eye-blending blush (or your fingers) to soften the outline of your lip shape. Try the full coverage Powermatte Lip Pigment from NARS ($26; Sephora, 605 N. Michigan

Ave., 312-649-9343; sephora.com) and top it with Givenchy’s Gloss Révélateur ($32; Barneys New York, 15 E. Oak St., 312587-1700; barneys.com), a universally shaded lip gloss, at the center of the lips. Says Garland, “This gives you the gloss without the messy outline.”

SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE SIMPLICITY, A STRONG TIMEPIECE TREND, IS TEMPTING CHICAGO TASTEMAKERS THIS SEASON WITH STRAIGHTFORWARD STYLE AND ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE. BY ALDOUS TUCK

Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Although this most famous Renaissance figure preceded the earliest watches by mere decades, his philosophy has stood the test of time. This season, Swiss watchmakers are embracing timeless design: Clean lines, uncomplicated dials, effortless construction, and straightforward materials are taking the market by storm—and speaking to those who crave the uncluttered. These finely crafted timepieces will make the right style statement for years to come, both in the boardroom and out on the town. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: With a caliber only 3.6mm thick, the insta-classic RM 67-01 Automatic Extra Flat from Richard Mille ($86,500) still provides visual depth to the brand’s iconic skeletonized movement. Each case requires more than 215 machining operations—not to mention extensive hand-brushing and –polishing—before the movement is mounted within its subtle lines. Geneva Seal, 112 E. Oak St., 312-944-3100; richardmille.com Introduced at Baselworld, Tudor’s Heritage Black Bay 41 ($2,950) continues the aesthetic tradition of the iconic Black Bay line. The elegant lacquer dial is inspired by the brand’s diving watches from the 1950s and complemented by the “snowflake”-style hands first introduced in 1969. A flat sapphire crystal and steel case round out the clean, minimalist look, which can be customized with three

different band options: stainless steel, leather, or camouflage fabric. James & Sons Fine Jewelers, 1457 N. Halsted St., 773-327-8800; tudorwatch.com Tissot presented the Excellence ($2,100) at this year’s Baselworld as part of its T Gold Collection. With a slim, dapper design, the watch comes in two iterations: 18k rose gold with a dramatic gradient-blue dial complemented by a blue leather strap, and 18k yellow or rose gold with a more classic white dial and black leather strap. The Swiss-made quartz movement offers an EOL (End of Life) indicator. James & Sons Fine Jewelers, 1457 N. Halsted St., 773-327-8800; tissotwatches.com The Saxonia Thin by A. Lange & Söhne ($14,800 for 37mm diameter, $24,500 for 40mm) has a case height of 5.9mm, making it the brand’s thinnest watch to date.

The simply elegant 18k white-gold case (there’s also a pink-gold model) houses a caliber L093.1 manually-wound movement, which offers a 72-hour power reserve and moves the dial’s classic, Saxonia sword-shaped hands. Michigan Ave., 312-6424299; alange-sohne.com Building on the popularity of last year’s Drive de Cartier debut, Cartier released the limitededition Drive de Cartier Flat ($14,300) at this year’s SIHH in both 18k rose and white gold. Bombs away! New Chicago-based fashion line Neval is generating serious buzz for fall with its sustainable-chic, globally influenced take on the classic bomber jacket.

98

MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

If there was one common thread to her varied, globe-trotting childhood, says local designer Anadil Johnson, it was fashion. Even after starting a finance career in Chicago years later, Johnson’s memories of clothing cultures from around the world continued to loom large in her mind. “There was a lack of globally inspired clothing that’s made sustainably [but] also maintains the edge and cool-factor of other luxury brands,” says Johnson. But now, with her just-launched line, Neval, as well as its debut Monarch Collection, she is aiming to change all that with a colorful array of sophisticated bomber jackets and scarves rooted in her native Bangladesh—but manufactured on Chicago’s North Side. Both the collection’s cropped Boho bomber ($695), with its blousy bishop sleeves, and more classically cut Urban bomber ($795), feature the region’s elegant jamdani muslin fabric, handmade by women in rural Sonargaon. “For us, it’s about being socially conscious about how we’re treating people and the planet,” says Johnson, “not only in the product but in the manufacturing process.” That process means minimal waste, with any leftover fabric repurposed for the collection’s sleek scarves ($195). Bonus: Both bombers are also reversible. For future collections, Johnson is looking to Latin American artisans to broaden Neval’s reach; meanwhile, her Bangladesh team is preparing a sheer, kimono-style layering robe for fall—yet another piece of the designer’s history, coming home to Chicago. nevalstyle.com

STYLE IKRAM’S IT LIST

FASHION STATEMENTS MIXING FLIRTY, FESTIVE STYLE WITH HIGH-IMPACT MESSAGING, THE NEW COLLECTION FROM ASHISH IS THE ULTIMATE WARDROBE CHOICE FOR RIGHT NOW, SAYS FASHION GURU I RAM GOLDMAN.

Few fashion designers are capturing the zeitgeist of this politically charged time quite like Londonbased Ashish Gupta. Renowned for his meticulously handcrafted, sequin-covered garments, the man behind chic label Ashish has outdone himself with a series of message-oriented garments for fall that are both undeniably fabulous and seriously impactful. “No one else does a sequin like him,” enthuses Chicago fashion queen Ikram Goldman, for whom Ashish’s latest collection is a must-wear for autumn. “Every season, he does these really beautiful, feminine clothes with playful messages—and this season, his political message was very poignant and spot-on. The pieces resonate with me, not just because they’re beautiful, but also because the message is very clear.” The combination of sequins with casual structure makes for a truly versatile garment, continues Goldman. “You can wear them with white jeans for winter, and if you want to dress it up you can pair it with a full tulle skirt for black tie. There’s an ease to these pieces that is really just amazing.” Ultimately though, for Goldman the message is what elevates Ashish’s collection to must-have status. “It’s very pure,” she says. “Be nice. Be kind. ‘More glitter, less Twitter’? I mean, come on. I love it!” Prices upon request; Ikram, 15 E. Huron St., 312-587-1000; ikram.com

Now it’s back to TV for drama of a different sort: the just-released Netflix original series Ozark, where the 53-year-old costars with series creator Jason Bateman as a husband and wife on the run from a drug cartel. As Linney—who has considered Chicago a second home since marrying Hinsdale native Marc Schauer in 2009—prepared for the series premiere, she chatted with Michigan Avenue about the fun of working with Bateman, her proudest career moment, and what thrills her about the Windy City. You’re in the home stretch of The Little Foxes. How does it feel to be doing your last few shows? I’m a little in denial about it—if I think about it too much, I get very, very sad. It’s been just a fantastic experience. It’s been hard, and it’s been challenging, and it’s been demanding and frightening, but it’s one of those full-on experiences that you don’t get very often. So I’m going to miss it terribly; I’m going to miss everyone involved. And next up is Ozark—a very different kind of role. What drew you to it? It was all about Jason Bateman. I’ve known him over the years, but as an acquaintance. I’ve always liked him. I’ve always been fascinated by his talent and how he lives his life, and just sort of all things Bateman. [laughs] So when he asked me to do this, I wasn’t looking to do television, but I wanted to work with him. And because this is really so much his project, and he’s so dedicated to it and so invested in it, I thought that would be a good way to spend my time. It’s not the most obvious onscreen pairing—you’re known for your dramatic

expertise and he’s a comedy pro. What was it like to join forces? It was no surprise to me that he’s such a great dramatic actor, which he really is. If you are that grounded of a comic—if your comedy comes so much from situation, and its sort of interior timing—there’s a lot there. We had a great time. I find that most comics are more serious, and most serious actors are more comic. There’s a sort of undertow of the other that we have—the opposite undertow. What excites you about the project? It has its own sort of tone. There’s been a lot of comparison to Breaking Bad, which is such a fantastic show, but it really does have its own tone. It’s mysterious and it’s dark, and it’s murky. I hope people like it as much as I do. Netflix also just announced the development of a revival of Tales of the City. That was such a big break for you early on, and so many people are passionate about it. How do you feel about reentering that world? It’s going to be wonderful, and I’m very very curious to see what they all come up with. And you know it’s not official official; we’ll see if it makes it to the next phase. I hope so. I told a friend yesterday that I was interviewing you, and he said, “She will always be Mary Ann to me.” Oh, I just love it when people say that. How does it feel knowing that role has had such an impact on people? Tales is, with its enormous heart and its humor and its sort of magical quality, a politically important piece of entertainment. It was necessary at the time; it’s still necessary, I feel. It’s one of those pieces of entertainment that helped our culture, and means a lot to a lot of people. I’m always so proud when anybody mentions it. My son’s middle name is Armistead for a reason! You’ve made incredibly smart choices in your career. What do you look for in a project? Well, thank you. I try. There are always things that don’t work. The things that

"I LOVE THE SIZE OF CHICAGO. EVERYTHING’S BIG: THE WEATHER IS BIG, THE BUILDINGS, THE STREETS, THE LAKE. IT’S JUST BIG, AND IT’S BOLD, AND IT’S SOLID." have turned out really well, you have such little control over it that some of it is sniffing out just to see if the right elements are involved. Is there potential for something good happening? Sometimes there’s no reason for it to be good, and it just turns out [that way]. A lot of it is script. What’s the potential of the story? Is it actable? Because a lot of things are not actable. I’ve said this a lot—you get the scripts and they’re not written to be acted, they’re not written to be turned into a piece of entertainment or a piece of art. They’re meant to be greenlit. They’re not written thinking about the actual performance aspect or the production side of it. So I really look to see what’s there, and I can always tell when I’m reading a script if my actor brain is turned on, if I start working on a project before I finish reading the script—if I can’t help myself, then I know I have to pay attention to it. And then of course the people involved, because even if you have a great script and then you have people who you don’t see eye to eye [with] or you’re just not going to get along, that’s just not fun anymore at my age! You’re one of the few actors who have moved very fluidly between television, film, and stage. Which is your greatest passion? It used to always be stage, because I grew up in the theater and I studied the theater, and film and television were the big surprise for me. But the more I do film and television, the more I enjoy it, because they are very separate—your preparation is different and the execution is different. If I was forced to choose— and I’m very glad I don’t have to—it would be stage, just because I’ve been doing it the longest, and it’s ultimately where I’m the most comfortable. What’s been the proudest moment of your career so far? Getting into Juilliard. More than anything, that was the most important thing, as opposed to any job. I could point to five or six jobs that were important and I grew and I was recognized for the work and all of that. But really, at the end of the day, the most important thing that has happened to me was getting into Juilliard. You’ve maintained a close connection to Juilliard. I gave a commencement speech a few years ago, and then I was asked to join the board of the school. So I’m a trustee there, and I try to stick my head in the drama department as much as I can whenever I have the time. I love being involved there. I love the faculty. I love the students. It’s a place where my concentration sort of works on a different level. And it’s an excellent reminder for me about the core of our work and why we do it. Let’s talk about your connection to Chicago. I went to Northwestern for my freshman year, and I liked the school a lot, but it ultimately wasn’t the place for me. And I didn’t really get into Chicago, into the city, a whole lot. So I didn’t really get to know it. And then I met my husband, who grew up in Hinsdale, and his family. His sister now lives in Oak Park, and his parents are right in the city next to the lake. Now I go there quite often. I’m actually headed there next week. And I love it. It’s just a great city. So I love that I have a sort of second home in another city. Having grown up in New York and being so New York-centric, to now have a solid connection to another American city the way that I do to Chicago is just fun. I love the architecture, I love Millennium Park—I love the size of Chicago. Everything’s big: The weather is big, the buildings, the streets, the lake. It’s just big, and it’s bold, and it’s solid. Those buildings—the huge buildings that take up blocks of space—it sort of represents an abundance of this American energy that I really love, while at the same time feeling intimate. And because of the lake, and the lake effect, there’s always a sense of circulation going on there. Whether it’s the wind or just the movement of water back and forth, it’s constantly percolating. Are there any particular places that you and your family love to go?

Al’s Beef and Johnnie’s in Oak Park. Both classics. That’s the first [thing] that is attended to whenever we get into Chicago. My husband insists on that being the first meal. Are you an Italian beef person or more of a hot dog person? I’m a full-on opportunity person. I will do it all. But it’s really good. And the pizzas are amazing. Being a New Yorker, New York pizza is New York pizza. But Chicago pizza is carving out a big place in my heart at the moment, I must say. Obviously Chicago’s theater scene is very robust as well. Can you imagine yourself taking the stage here? Oh, sure. Some of the best theater in the country is in Chicago, with the Goodman and Steppenwolf, and all the young companies like the Hypocrites. There’s a lot of exciting work happening there, and the playwrights that are there. So absolutely. You have a 3-year-old, Bennett. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve experienced with motherhood? I think it was just how ready for it I was. You know, I had a child very late in life. It was something I didn’t think was going to happen and then when it did, there’s an extreme sense of gratitude that comes with that—when it almost passes you by and then doesn’t. So I have loved every second of it and continue to, and I’m constantly amazed and delighted and challenged by all of it—even in the moments that people complain about. When Bennett was an infant and I was up with him at 4:30 in the morning and sleep-deprived and all of that, I can remember sitting with him and just having this overwhelming sense of, I’ve wanted to be right here for 20 years, and all of a sudden here I am. The benefit of being an older parent is everyone sort of says, ‘Oh, your life is going to change,’ and I was very ready for my life to change. And they’re just fun—or at least I find being around my child a lot of fun. And it’s challenging. You have the moments where you think, ‘How do I deal with this? How in the world do I deal with a toddler who doesn’t want to do what I want him to do?’ You know, how do you help a human being navigate through the minefield of emotions when they’re first really experiencing them, without being too overbearing? What’s the balance? What’s the right level of involvement as far as helping someone discover all that and then learning how to navigate themselves through it? [It’s] big, important stuff, but I’m having a great time. With all the acclaim you’ve received over the years, what do you feel is left for you? What are your goals? My thinking is not as specific as that. I wish it was. It would make a lot of people very happy if I could point to things and say, ‘I want to do that!’ I just want to be better at what I do, and I want to keep learning. And I want to be stretched and do things that scare me a little bit, and experience the work that all these wonderful playwrights over the decades and centuries have done. You just want to contribute. The arts are important, and it’s worthy of our time to champion [them]. I just feel like there’s so much more to discover. Are there any talents out there that you really admire and could see collaborating with? There are tons and tons. I hope at one point I get to work with Maggie Smith in some sort of capacity. Or Judi Dench. If you weren’t an actor, what do you think you’d be doing? God only knows. I have no idea. I hope I’d be okay [laughs], but I really don’t know if I would be. I am just so grateful I am right where I should be. And I know a lot of people never get to that place, so I certainly don’t take that for granted, ever.

Lighting up the runway with irreverent sensuality and a bold sense of wonder, designer Alessandro Michele has Gucci burning through the fine fashion firmament. by RACHEL FELDER

THIS AND OPPOSITE PAGE: PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF GUCCI

“I am trying to cause a little revolution, a different way to talk about beauty and sexiness,” Alessandro Michele said upon his appointment as Gucci’s creative director in 2015, a sensibility seen throughout the house’s recent Fall/ Winter collections (this page and opposite page).

FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, GUCCI HAS SET THE FASHION WORLD ABLAZE. And to many of its fans, the brand’s amazing popularity— marked by waiting lists for its most buzzed-about items, with velvet-roped lines of shoppers snaking outside its flagship US boutiques, as well as a global sales spike of more than 40 percent through the first half of 2017—--can be attributed to one man: Creative Director Alessandro Michele. Michele, a 44-year-old native of Rome, has infused the Gucci line with a theatrical sense of confidence that’s hard to resist, from clothing featuring brash, colorful prints to shoes and bags accentuated with unexpected flourishes like fur or embroidery. A key element of its current success has been the familiarity of certain details, like horse-bit toggles and thick red and green piping, that come straight from the brand’s archives—although their current versions have been spunkily updated for the day’s zeitgeist. As Michele told Vogue in 2015, soon after his appointment to his current role, “I am trying to cause a little revolution inside the company—to push another language, a different way to talk about beauty and sexiness.” The house was founded in Florence nearly a century ago, in 1921, with an initial focus—like Prada, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and other now-iconic high-end brands—on luggage and leather goods. After several successful decades, Gucci’s popularity was amplified in the 1950s and ’60s when celebrities began to embrace new items like rigid top-handled purses and golden belt buckles in the shape of large capital G’s, oriented, like the faces of Janus, back to back. In that era, the brand became virtually synonymous with a glitzy, glamorous, international lifestyle. “It was very identifiable,” says Cameron Silver, a fashion historian and founder of the vintage retailer Decades. “It identified that aesthetic of a very jet-set traveler. The bamboo handle and the double-G motif are iconic.” A few decades later, Gucci redefined itself as more than just

a source of luxury accessories. Under designer Tom Ford— who joined the company as creative director in 1990, initially overseeing women’s clothing design and gradually transitioning into a larger, more unisex design role—the brand began to focus as much on clothing for women and men as on accessories. Ford’s pieces were distinguished by an overt, ultraconfident sexiness. “He gets there and injects an almost American, Halston-like DNA into Gucci, and there’s this spectacular revival,” says Silver. The brand became highly fashionable again, with memorable pieces like extra-trim women’s tuxedos, cut in velvet and designed to be worn without a shirt underneath, a look still emblematic of the period. Ford stayed at the house (ultimately also overseeing design at Yves Saint Laurent, which shares ownership with Gucci) until 2004, when he left, along with Gucci Group CEO Domenico De Sole, a key champion of both Ford and the brand. The designs of his successor, Frida Giannini, lacked the assertive oomph that had become a component of Gucci’s appeal. “The clothes lost a bit of their sensuality,” says Ken

FLOWER POWER Alessandro Michele’s touch reaches from fashion to fragrance with another striking creation for fall: Gucci Bloom (100ml for $124), a confident and complex floral scent that reinvigorates the house’s storied fragrance heritage. Jasmine, one of Bloom’s most prominent notes, is complemented by rarer aromas, like that of the flower of the Rangoon creeper, which has never before been used in a perfume. Grown in southern India, the blossom opens at dusk, gradually deepening in color from white to pink to a deep red. Gucci Bloom similarly evolves as you wear it, from an initial floral scent to a more intense, earthier tone that’s especially suited to fall. The fragrance is bolder and less delicate than the brand’s other women’s offerings, like Eau de Gucci (which debuted in 1993 with its mix of citrus, tuberose, and lily of the valley) and Envy (a fresher, grassier fragrance introduced in 1997). Bloom is, essentially, a perfume for Michele’s modern woman: feminine and beautiful but never predictable or shy. (Appropriately, actress Dakota Johnson, artist Petra Collins, and model Hari Nef are at the center of Bloom’s ad campaign.)

While the company introduced its first perfume, Gucci No. 1, in 1974, and has had international success in the arena ever since, it has increased its focus on fragrance over the last decade, unveiling more scents than ever before, like 2009’s clean, youthful Flora and, in 2010, the bold Gucci Guilty. But Bloom is the only perfume with Michele’s thorough input and imprint. To create its powerful floral blend, he worked with revered perfumer Alberto Morillas, whose résumé includes Calvin Klein’s CK One and Cartier’s Panthère de Cartier. The result, like most of Gucci’s offerings, seems to bridge a gap, appealing as much to a sophisticated socialite who’s been a Gucci fan for decades as it does to a young woman, newer to Gucci, heading out for a night on the town.

Fall/Winter 2017 Runway Standouts

Downing, fashion director at Neiman Marcus. “That Gucci guy and girl want to be noticed. They’re attentiongetting—they are not wallflowers, and they want clothes that have a real sexiness to them.” And so early 2015 saw the installation of a new creative director, Alessandro Michele, who had quietly worked on the Gucci design team since being hired by Ford in 2002. His take on Gucci’s sexiness is empowered and modern, exemplified by the fluid cut of a boldly printed dress, or the transparent fabric on an otherwise straightforward, high-neck blouse. But the real power of Michele’s designs comes from being rooted in the brand’s most identifiable motifs, reworked in a quirky and confident way that makes them modern but still indelible; often the designs’ over-the-top impact anoints them with true statement-piece status. “There’s the great love of tradition in a very audacious way, where he has taken the sensibility of heritage and love of things that feel very recognizable and he’s twisted them in a way that makes them feel übercool and of-themoment,” says Downing. Case in point: Michele’s reinterpretations of Gucci’s popular loafers, embellished with embroidered designs or giant faux pearls and updated with a clunky high heel and—in what might well be the most copied shoe of the last few years—lined with fur and turned into a leather backless slide.

“ALESSANDRO DOESN’T CREATE FASHION FOR THE SAKE OF A TREND; HE CREATES COLLECTIBLES. THAT PUTS A LOT OF JOY IN THE CUSTOMER’S HEART.”— ken downing “The chord that Alessandro’s really struck is that there’s an enormous love for the idea of Gucci,” Downing adds. “That’s a love that began when Tom Ford took over that fêted house decades ago, and as the house began to fall from favor, it left behind many loyalists to the Gucci brand who were truly yearning for something exceptional.” The timing of Michele’s promotion couldn’t have been better. As Lisa Aiken, retail fashion director at Net-a-Porter, explains, “Alessandro’s first collection came at a point when actually everything was a little more stripped back. We were coming off the back of what was termed ‘normcore,’ so it brought back this quite romantic vision of what fashion could be. It inspired a much more emotional reaction.” In early 2015, the first presentations of Michele’s creations—a group of men’s pieces that he famously whipped up in just a few days, followed by womenswear a month later—garnered raves from both the

INSIDE JOB Alessandro Michele’s assertive trademarks aren’t limited to Gucci’s sturdyheeled shoes or jackets with expertly cut sleeves. The brand recently unveiled Gucci Décor, a collection of items designed to adorn living rooms and dressing tables while sharing the vibrancy that has come to distinguish his wearable pieces. “He loves abundance,” says Neiman Marcus’s Ken Downing. “[He has an] ability to create this romantic, effusive abundance that captures the imagination and draws you in.” That extravagant sensibility lends itself especially well to décor; it’s easy to imagine a single statement piece accenting an otherwise understated room. The collection includes ornamental pillows, trays, richly lacquered chairs with embroidered cushions, and small tables, all made in Italy.

press and shoppers, who responded viscerally to his spunky retro-inspired prints, his elegant draping, and a broad color palette that included brights, neutrals, and muted shades of mustard, olive, and maroon. Unlike some fine fashion pieces that evoke an emotional reaction in their buyers, Michele’s items are of-the-moment but don’t feel as if they’ll go out of style next season, plus they sell for a price that’s

admittedly high but less astronomical than other brands. “Alessandro doesn’t create fashion for the sake of a trend; he creates collectibles,” says Downing. “In general terms, of all of the brands that hang in the luxury spectrum, it is a lot of look for the money you’re spending. That puts a lot of joy in the customer’s heart.” In his handful of seasons as creative director, Michele has offered new iterations of some of the designs that have most resonated with Gucci’s fans, from boldly printed dresses and separates to white leather sneakers covered with serpents or bright crimson flowers. “I love the fact that he is evolving and developing rather than starting fresh every season,” says Net-a-Porter’s Aiken. “That gives women the sense of ‘Actually, I’m going to purchase this; it is an investment, it has longevity, it’s going to feel relevant for seasons to come because he isn’t radicalizing every season with something new.’” She adds, “I think he’s being very smart.”

In good company (from above): Actor Alessandro Borghi, photographer Ryan McGinley, artist Trevor Andrew (who collaborated on last year’s GucciGhost capsule collection), musician Olly Alexander, actor Jared Leto, and Gucci President and CEO Marco Bizzarri attend the house’s Spring/Summer 2017 show during Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week; Michele accompanied (and dressed) actress Dakota Johnson, one of the faces of the Gucci Bloom campaign, to this year’s Met Gala in New York City.

It features many of Michele’s bold signatures: embroidered images of animals, such as slithering serpents or roaring lions; the use of rich velvet; and a vivid palette that includes colors immutably associated with Gucci’s heritage, like crimson red and bright green. Among the line’s standouts are the deeply scented candles encased in decorative porcelain vessels (which are designed to be keepsakes long after the fragrant wax has burned off). The elegant containers are made by Richard Ginori, a centuries-old producer of china, founded, like Gucci, in Florence. Ginori is, not coincidentally, owned by the same parent company, and for the last few years Michele has overseen that brand’s creative direction in addition to his duties at Gucci. 900 North Michigan Shops, 312664-5504; gucci.com

THE RITZ, REBORN ONE OF THE CITY’S MOST LEGENDARY HOTELS DEBUTS A DRAMATICALLY REDESIGNED LOBBY JUST IN TIME FOR FALL.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE RITZ-CARLTON, CHICAGO

BY J.P. ANDERSON

Even icons need a makeover every so often, and The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago has just undergone a doozy: a two-phase, nine-month renovation more extensive than any since the luxe hotel opened on the Mag Mile in 1975. While the project touched all corners of the historic property—from revitalizing the spa to adding the Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge—its pièce de résistance is the hotel’s justunveiled new lobby, which has been transformed into what may be one of the most stylish public spaces in the city. “It’s all about celebrating the vertical,” notes lead designer Billy Quimby, principal at San Francisco design firm BAMO, of the reimagined space, which beckons with discrete bar and dining areas and a central lounge, above which floats the room’s showstopper, by Prague-based Lasvit: The Flying Wave, a sculpture whose four types of hanging handmade glass pieces are designed to evoke the undulating waters of Lake Michigan. Soaring windows, mirrored columns, and a bustling rear café space complete the picture, culminating in a grand, sweeping room befitting the brand. THE NEW FRONTIER BUZZING WITH CHIC NEW SHOPS, GALLERIES, AND EATERIES, WEST TOWN’S WESTERN EDGE IS THE CITY’S LATEST HAVEN FOR LUXE REAL ESTATE.

Luxury real estate buyers want it all—and for the past few years, West Town has delivered with its striking housing, proximity to sophisticated noshing and shopping, picturesque streets, and scenic parks. Still, growth had largely been concentrated to its eastern neighborhoods, what with their access to the highway, public transit lines, and Milwaukee Avenue. No longer. Smith Park—a pie slice-shaped area in the southwest corner of West Town, and named for a nearly 10-acre park on its southern border—is emerging as a hot spot for luxury development. “It’s a hidden gem, and its residents want it to stay that way,” says Baird & Warner broker Sharon Gillman. “It’s one of the few places where you can still afford to buy land—even larger lots at reasonable prices. That’s why I see developers living there themselves.” But Smith Park isn’t likely to stay a secret for long. “The 606 has made it more acceptable to go west,” notes KoenigRubloff broker Mario Greco. “Five years ago, the neighborhood had virtually nothing. But now you can walk to great restaurants on California Avenue, and the programs and facilities in the park keep getting better.” Smith Park’s larger lots, lower congestion, and burgeoning

The master bathroom (left) and bedroom at 537 North Artesian Avenue, a prime example of West Town’s new luxe outlook.

infrastructure are a powerful draw—they convinced the Blake Group to convert a run-down, late 19th-century two-flat at 2629 West Superior Street (now marketed by Gillman for $1.295 million) into a stunning 4,000-squarefoot, four-bed, four-bath, 21st-century home. Gone are its timeworn features and façade, replaced by a polished brick and glass exterior, deeper foundation, full-height basement, new third floor, and high ceilings. An open, airy floor plan prevails, while a floating steel and glass staircase, which transverses all four levels, and expansive windows turn the structure into a sleek, lightfilled domicile. A gourmet kitchen and enormous thirdstory master suite with an expansive private deck increase the luxury quotient. High-end new construction is also booming: Greco is marketing two that are sleek contemporaries: a 4,300square-foot, five-bed, threeand-a-half-bath home at 852 North Rockwell Avenue that sits on a 30-footwide corner lot with outdoor decks on every floor ($1.2995 million), and a 4,000-square-foot, five-bed, three-and-a-half-bath at 537 North Artesian Avenue that just hit the market for just north of $1 million. Not only does Smith Park’s spot in the lexicon of chic Chicago neighborhoods seem secure, it looks like it may change the equation for its neighbor to the northwest— East Humboldt Park, long an up-and-comer but still late to reach its potential. Ironically, it’s officially part of West Town. Clearly its renaissance is just a matter of time.

FRONT ROW SEAT LEXUS’S GROUNDBREAKING NEW FLAGSHIP SPORTS CAR, THE 2018 LC500, IS BREATHTAKING BOTH INSIDE AND OUT. HERE, WE TAKE ITS NEXT-GENERATION INTERIOR FOR A TEST-DRIVE. BY NATE CHAPNICK GAUGE CLUSTER

STEERING WHEEL

CENTER CONSOLE

Inspired by the design of Lexus’s LFA supercar, the LC500’s center gauge ring [1] employs thin-film transistor (TFT) display technology and moves to the left and right while driving. Metallictrimmed rotary knobs [2] next to the steering wheel provide quick traction control and suspension setting changes. Plus, the low instrument panel position and hood line [3] help give the driver a commanding view of the road, despite lowto-the-road, sporty seating.

Attention to detail is on display with the leatherstitched center cap [4] as well as the outer wheel [5], which features different circumferences and careful stitching for the perfect grip, allowing the magnesiumalloy paddle shifters [6] to fall readily into hand.

Embedding the 10.3-inch color screen [9] in the leather dash (at the level of the instrument cluster) while extending the center stack [10] toward the driver adds depth—a plus for ergonomics and the driver’s sight lines. The screen responds to the Remote Touch Interface pad, displaying everything from navigation instructions to Lexus’s Enform App Suite. In a nod to old-school luxury, Lexus also added an elegant analog

timepiece [11] just to the right of the screen. LEATHER DETAILING

“Takumi” is the Japanese word for artisan, and Lexus’s takumi craftsmanship is on full display in the meticulously wrapped leather gearshift [12], the contrast stitching just underneath the magnesiumcolored climate control buttons [13], and the sculpted side bolster [14], which gradually rises to create a grab handle for passengers and adds another layer of depth

to the interior design. LOWER CONSOLE

Knurled seeking and tuning buttons, plus a gleaming volume knob [15], make audio adjustments painless. SPACE HAUTE PROPERT Y Art effect: In Michael Miller’s newly renovated South Loop home, digital art displays rotate pieces from the designer’s collection at the touch of a button.

INSIDE JOB CENTAUR INTERIORS PRINCIPAL MICHAEL MILLER TAKES HIS TALENTS IN-HOUSE FOR A TECH-FABULOUS UPGRADE TO HIS OWN SOUTH LOOP HOME.

“WE WANT TO CREATE A LOT OF FUNCTIONALITY IN OUR HOME. IT’S OUR LIFESTYLE.” —michael miller

140  MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM

As principal of high-end residential interior design firm Centaur Interiors (centaur interiors.com), Michael Miller is an expert at balancing the old with the new—and that includes his own recently renovated South Loop home, where he deftly pairs thousand-year-old volcano lava rocks with contemporary art. True, juxtaposing the ancient with the modern is nothing new in the design world. In the 43-year-old’s hands, however, it’s done with a firm embrace of decidedly 21st-century methods. “Technology plays a big role in our design because we want to create a lot of functionality in our home,” Miller says matterof-factly of the 1,400-square-foot space, which he shares with wife, Allana, and a darling Teacup Pomeranian named Sophie (aka “the queen of the castle”). “It’s our lifestyle.” That lifestyle is controlled by a sophisticated home automation system, discreetly hidden behind wall panels and connected to control pads mounted flush, the better to eliminate visual wall clutter. Take the contemporary art, for example. Yes, there’s a gleaming glass wall sculpture by Connie Noyes that looks like it could blind on a sunny day from the perch of Miller’s 21st floor. But there are also three cleverly placed large-screen displays in the foyer that, at the touch of an iPad, rotate art depending on

Miller’s mood and the company that’s visiting. “I like art in all forms,” he notes of the unconventional display. “The screens enhance everything in the home.” Indeed, they coexist as easily with the sleek chrome and white furnishing as with the abstract millwork, natural stone, and Venetian plaster finish of the clean-lined interior. Technology has enhanced other aspects of the designer’s modern abode as well. With the spin of a dial, his wife’s luxe, Hydrology-outfitted bath can be awash in an immersive light show of blue (for a calming effect) or orange (for boosting energy). Changes in water functions are controlled digitally, too, as is an aromatherapy feature. By contrast, the attached dressing area—though glamorous, with 6-foot-by-6-foot glossy white tiles and a Tyler Shields Prada photograph—is low-tech. Closet doors slide manually (for now) to reveal an enviable shoe collection. The designer states frankly that his home is highly tailored to his needs and preferences. In the living room, electric shades rise 10 minutes before sunset. Path lighting automatically turns on if he arrives home late from after-work events and leads the way straight to the bedroom. An away button shuts it all down. “The buttons [that are] programmed are pretty detailed,” he says. “Flipping switches is not efficient.” “We have technology that makes our daily tasks easier and more enjoyable,” he adds. “The more we can get the home to work around our lifestyle, the better it is.”

TECHNOLOGY ENHANCES ALL ASPECTS OF DESIGNER MICHAEL MILLER’S SOUTH LOOP HOME.
