“T
his show—t he situat ions t hat t hese people find t hemselves in—it pushes t hem to cer t a in edges, ledges where they have to make these weird decisions, and it’s exciting to watch,” says Malin Akerman. She’s talking about Billions, her hit new drama on Showtime, whose debut attracted a record-breaking 2.99 million viewers—the cable network’s best original series premiere, topping the previous title holder, Ray Donovan. Akerman plays Lara Axelrod, the perfectly polished wife to series star Damian Lewis (Homeland). Rounding out the acclaimed cast a re Paul Gia matt i as US attor ney Chuck Rhoades, who is determined to bring down Lewis’s Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, and Maggie Siff (Sons of Anarchy) as Rhoades’s wife (and S&M partner), as well as the in-office shrink at Axelrod’s hedge fund. “In each episode, you will be rooting for someone different,” Akerman says, “and that’s life, because nobody’s perfect, everybody’s fallible, everyone makes mistakes, everyone kind of operates from their point of view of what their value system is and what they think is right. I like the way that you dodge back and forth between rooting for either Team Chuck Rhoades or Team Axelrod.” Billions is a total 180 for Akerman, who until recently had been lauded mainly for her work in comedies like Couples Retreat and Childrens Hospital. But this dramatic role is just one of the changes she’s making in her life. Recently divorced from drummer Roberto Zincone, she’s now a single mom to the couple’s nearly 3-year-old son, Sebastian. Here the actress opens up about climbing to the top in Hollywood, what it’s like to play around in Billions’ world of “fuck-you money,” and avoiding the red carpet’s day-after nasties. What attracted you to the Billions script? It’s the type of show that I like to watch—I’m a big fan of Breaking Bad and House of Cards. I’ve done so much comedy in my life, so I was actively seeking something a little different from what I normally do. Then this script came along, and I just thought it was so well-written. I think a lot of people are interested in Wall Street [and what’s] happening behind closed doors. Even though Lara Axelrod is the picture of a woman with money, she’s also rough around the edges, even threatening another woman in episode one. How did you relate to that kind of character? There is a parallel between myself and Lara in a way. She’s a fighter, she’s very driven, and she does whatever it takes to make things happen. The parallel for me was she will fight to the death for her family, and I feel the same way.

You become a momma bear when you become a mother. I grew up sort of the same way [as Lara], where I come from very humble beginnings and I’ve really worked hard to get to where I’m at today, shape-shifting and figuring out how to manage this new world that I live in, which for me is Hollywood and everything that comes with it. After doing so many comedies, both in film and for television, did it feel like a foreign language to approach a dramatic script? I wouldn’t say it was strange. It was very amazing, and I think it’s also the reality of how we speak sometimes. I would never actually threaten someone in real life—I don’t have the balls to do that—but it’s nice to sometimes say what we want to say to certain people. I feel like in our lives, as well as in our careers, there’s a certain point where you feel like you need a bit of growth, where it becomes stagnant and you go, Okay, what’s the next step? And this felt like the right next step, to go into a different genre and new challenge. How did you even get considered for Billions when it’s easy in Hollywood to get pigeonholed in one kind of genre? I did have to fight for it. I did get the opportunity to have a meeting with Brian [Koppelman] and David [Levien], the show creators, and then it was my turn to prove myself. [Once I got the part] I was beyond elated because, for sure, it’s a bit of a risk because I haven’t done much in the drama genre. At the same time, we’re actors and can do different genres, but once you land in one niche, it’s hard for people to see you in anything else—that’s always the fight and the struggle. You’ve described yourself as a “guy’s girl.” What does that mean? It means that I just felt more comfortable with the guys growing up; I just felt like I could really be myself and be goofy and dorky and they understood it. I’m not really girly. My least favorite thing to do is go for manicures and pedicures, but if I have to do it, I will. I so love and appreciate my close girlfriends—I hold them so high up in my life and I don’t know where I’d be without them—but I have far fewer girlfriends than I have guy friends. Billions’ power-player types are everywhere on Wall Street, but have you also come up against them in Hollywood? Without naming names… you do meet a lot of producers and directors who think they’re king shit, but they don’t need to walk around like that. It’s interesting here because some are like peacocks—they put their feathers out and they show you all their colors, but it’s more talk than it is action. I tend to find that a lot of people who really do well for themselves, they take careful steps; they’re not as showy as some people may be. I think that’s a big thing in Hollywood, too,

as it is in the financial market—that sort of alpha, macho vibe, where you’ve got to show that you got stuff going on. A big thing in life is finding that balance, to find humility, and to retain your humbleness. Who in Hollywood have you really learned from? Each movie’s been a growth [opportunity] because every film [I’ve done] I feel like I’ve had someone who’s been around longer, who’s better, who just knows what they’re doing. It’s like being on a track team: You always want to run with someone who’s faster than you so you can pick up your speed. But I can honestly say that Billions has been the biggest learning experience. I’m so inspired by working with Damian Lewis. I’m so inspired by his preparation and the way he approaches his role and how he shows up at work. It really makes me want to work harder and do better. I think he’s, to date, the one person who’s really making me grow as an actor and a human being. Has becoming a mom changed the way you consider projects? Absolutely. It shifts a lot of things in your life. Luckily, Billions is a big ensemble cast, so I don’t have to be on set every day, so I do get a lot of quality time with my son. And I do pick projects accordingly as well. There are some projects where it’s like you need to be in Africa for three months, and I can’t do that; I can’t bring my son to Africa for three months—it’s just too far and too long and he just started preschool. You prioritize, and you do some values mining of, Okay, what’s most important here right now? When was the first moment you felt you were “making it” as an actress? Oh God, you still doubt that, even to this day, because you can fall off the map at any moment. There’s always new, exciting people coming into Hollywood, and there are so many talented people, so you’re always on edge. But a few years back, just knowing that scripts were constantly coming in is always a nice feeling. It doesn’t mean that they were the big Hollywood films—they were a lot of independent films—but there is always something, so you know that you’ve got some street cred. It’s funny, because in every tier of the pyramid as you go up it, there are always people you’re fighting against to get a role. The higher up you go, the more talented or experienced the actors you’re going up against. It’s a bigger challenge to get the roles that you really want. I know that I’ve made it far; I know that I’m doing well, absolutely, and especially now with Billions, it’s incredible. But there’s always that doubt; there’s always that fear. There’s always the next person just chomping at the bit. You just keep on working and focusing on what’s next. That must be a weird dynamic, where
you’re hoping one day Jennifer Aniston twists an ankle and has to bow out of a project so you can hop right in there, but in the same vein, someone else is hoping you can’t do the next season of Billions… There haven’t really been exact nemeses for me, where I go and it’s always that girl who gets the job, but you’re never secure in this business, unless maybe you’re Jennifer Aniston or people like that. But again, who knows? Because they also may want to be doing projects that they’re not doing because they’ve fallen in a certain category. You never know how people feel about their careers. It’s such an interesting career choice, acting, because it’s very fluid; it’s not concrete in any way, for anyone. Do you ever read what people write about you on the Internet, particularly critiquing your red-carpet wardrobe? No. I really try not to ever look at it. I don’t even want to go there, because it’s not worth letting someone else take that power from you, because who are they to judge? Ultimately, you wore what you wore and feel lucky to be able to wear these beautiful dresses, and who is [writing that] anyway? Some guy sitting in sweatpants who’s judging what you’re wearing? Come on. It’s not fair to dissect people like that. You should appreciate everyone’s style and uniqueness. I did [read comments] in the beginning of my career, and that was devastating. You have no idea how mean people can be. Many of your red-carpet dresses reveal your tattoos. What do they mean? The one on my back is actually a funny story. When I was 24 years old, I went on Melrose to Zap Tattoos and asked if I could use the bathroom, and I started chatting with the owner. And he said, “Oh, you don’t have any tattoos?” And I said, “No, but I really want one. I just have to figure out what I want.” And he said, “Let’s go grab some lunch, we’ll talk about it, and free tattoo on the house.” So I kind of told him my life story, my background... and I’ve grown up Buddhist; my mom used to take me to temple, and it really had a big impact on my life because in Buddhism, you really believe you can make your own life the way you want it. It’s a lotus flower on my back, and they grow in murky waters and they have no roots, and I just felt like that’s a really nice representation of being able to make life whatever you want. My wrist one is for my son—it’s his initials. And then I have a puzzle piece on my ribs, which is a friendship tattoo with one of my best girlfriends. They all have some sort of meaning, although the first one was kind of funny how it happened. You get one tattoo and it snowballs; nobody ever stops at one… Forget about it. You can’t. It’s impossible! I’m already thinking about my next one. OD

The lefty won three titles this year including Madrid, New Haven and Sydney. At 25, Kvitova is looking to become a regular Grand Slam contender.
