“The idea for the Philly Love Notes blog was very much a whim when I started it in 2012: I just wanted to see new places in the city and meet new people. I would receive location recommendations and then I would meet everyone at their suggested spot and take pictures. I never wrote
the actual love notes; the readers always penned them. I went all over the city and met people at the craziest places and saw so many cool things. I met a very interesting woman who worked for the juvenile justice system at the Art Museum steps. Someone else wrote a
love letter to Kelly Drive with a note about each mile marker. One of my favorites is the Pavilion in the Trees. It’s an amazing treehouse in Fairmount Park that’s pretty hidden and isn’t on any maps. Now I go there every season. I concluded the blog recently to work on
other projects like Philly-themed maps, but our #whyilovephilly continues to be one of the most popular citywide hashtags on Instagram. Philly boosterism has been taken up by a lot of people, so it felt like my job was done.” philly lovenotes.com

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF

A few weeks ago a student from Temple University asked to interview me for a senior project. I was flattered—but I was also skeptical. As a writer it’s not very often that you find yourself on the other side of the interview, fielding personal questions that are usually followed by too-long pauses. I was surprised by how thoughtful some of her questions were (what was the last first time I had done something anyway?) and it left me with a fresh perspective on the interview process: Telling a person’s story is a privilege and a job that should always be handled with care. Our annual Women of Influence issue is the perfect example of that kind of understanding. Many of our personalities are being featured in Philadelphia Style for the first time—among them cover star
Kaitlin Olson. Her excitement for her adopted hometown by way of starring in the impossibly funny It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is positively palpable. Former news anchor and TV production pro Nancy Glass makes her first Philadelphia Style cameo in more than 10 years. I recently spent a morning with Glass at her Main Line headquarters and we talked for more than two hours about life, the media industry, and even our dogs. And like any veteran reporter she turned the tables on me a few times. I wasn’t exactly ready with answers but the pauses weren’t too long. Enjoy the issue!

current generation of Philadelphia influencers, from nonprofits to government and the private sector. Our Healthy Living section returns again for 2016 in this issue. We spoke to some of the area’s top health systems and their esteemed doctors for insights into the cutting-edge treatments and research that they are working on. I am constantly impressed by how Philadelphia is at the forefront of medicine on a national and international level. Health and wellness is a timely complement to Philadelphia Style’s city-focused coverage, and we are pleased to bring the section back for a second year. I hope you enjoy the issue.

Actress Kaitlin Olson has brains, beauty, and personality. Naturally, this makes her a perfect choice for our Women of Influence cover. The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star—who is also married to Philly native and Sunny co-star and co-creator Rob McElhenney—appears in this issue timed with the release of her upcoming Pixar movie, Finding Dory. Olson joined us a few years ago for an event we hosted with McElhenney in support of his Men’s Issue cover, and we are thrilled to have her back in the Philadelphia Style fold. This edition also marks our annual Women of Influence feature story, and each time the talent keeps getting better. The overall story continues to be about the city’s most influential ladies and their many personal and professional pursuits. But after four years, we remain on the hunt for new personalities with new stories to share. I’m happy to say that all five of the ladies profiled on the pages ahead represent the

She has written numerous articles and medical reviews, speaking often on the topics of fitness, nutrition, and healthy living. In this issue, Dr. Radcliff contributes to our Healthy Living feature discussing women’s preventative care. How is technology impacting medicine? Within the realms of healthcare and medical advancements, technology plays a crucial role. Philly has an established reputation as a leading medical technological center with an aim to make medicine the best in medical science and patient care in Philadelphia while impacting people around the world. If you had one piece of health advice to give, what would it be? Make smart choices each day about your health. We can enjoy good health at any age by staying physically active, sleeping eight hours a day, managing stress, and getting routine health exams and screenings. Ever., about Pennsylvania’s lone president, James Buchanan, due to be released during the 2016 presidential campaign. He is also the author of Daddy’s Little Goalie, a funny and sentimental memoir about being the dad of girl athletes. Were you familiar with the Divine Lorraine before interviewing Eric Blumenfeld? I have long been fascinated by the mammoth Divine Lorraine Hotel on North Broad Street and have hope that Blumenfeld and his friendly rivals can revive the area around it. What are some of your favorite iconic Philly structures? My favorite Philadelphia building is the Historical Society of Pennsylvania at 13th and Locust streets, the repository of the bulk of James Buchanan’s papers.
Christina Pellegrini is a fashion, beauty, and lifestyle writer. After cutting her teeth in the features department of The Philadelphia Inquirer, she was a staff editor at Philadelphia Style for two years. While she now writes for Hello Giggles, CBS Interactive, Wine Enthusiast, Cambio, and Racked, she still welcomes the chance to report on the Philadelphia scene as a contributing writer for PS. You interviewed the women behind Piper Wai. Did you find anything inspiring about their success story? The insane demand they’ve fielded over the last few months. In just the first night after their episode aired on Shark Tank, they sold $400,000 worth of deodorant. You also covered Derek Lam’s visit to Neiman Marcus in April. What do you think has made him such a popular fashion label? There’s a gorgeousness to Lam’s pieces that make them virtually timeless; they are cut like works of art.

Throughout his career, he has photographed various celebrities and has appeared in numerous fashion, lifestyle, and bridal magazines. Kramer believes his success reflects not only his accomplishments and beliefs, but also his incredible love for life and photography. Tell us about shooting our Women of Influence feature. I was excited about the project. Before going behind the lens, I researched the women in order to learn more about them. The energy was great, it was comfortable, and it went very smooth. I enjoyed interacting and posing the women to make them look as great as possible in front of the camera. It’s my job to make them look their best, and I believe I accomplished that.

A favorite Philly attraction for its carousel, mini golf, and those crave-worthy SquareBurger Cake Shakes, Franklin Square celebrates its 10th birthday with an East-meets-West celebration. From April 22 to June 12, the historic square will transform into a garden of multicolored LED lights fashioned into flowers, peacocks, a three-story pagoda, and a grand 200-footlong dragon for the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival. The theme was chosen to bridge two diverse Philly communities, says Amy Needle, president and CEO of Historic Philadelphia, Inc. “One of the most exciting opportunities for Historic Philadelphia is that we can expand our relationship with neighboring Chinatown,” she says. “We wanted to have a year-long celebration with some special added attractions. This was the perfect way to kick things off.” Twenty Chinese artisans will spend a month in Philly leading up to the event to create dozens of lanterns by hand—from building the frames and attaching the silk overlays to installing the lights. And look for local performers, artists, and food throughout those seven scenic weeks. Says Needle, “We look forward to bringing Chinatown’s culture to a wider audience.” franklinsquare.com

Spanish-born artist. Comprised of paintings, sketches, costumes, and photographs, the exhibition surveys Picasso’s works surrounding the First World War, from 1912 to 1924. It’s not just a juxtaposition of mediums but also of styles—the artist spent much of this time weaving back and forth between his famed Cubism and classic art techniques. Curator Martha Lucy suggests touring the permanent collection first. “Albert Barnes was a fan of Picasso’s earlier works, so the exhibit picks up where Barnes left off,” she says. “This is a great complement to our collection.” barnesfoundation.org Midas Touch
The Penn Museum’s “Golden Age of King

The show’s 120-plus artifacts—many uncovered by the museum’s own excavation team in the ancient capital of Gordion (in what is today Turkey) starting in 1950—give a glimpse into life during the rule of Midas. His “golden touch” is felt in the textiles on display, as well as serving vessels, figurines, and other artifacts. “Having all of the objects together gives a whole new sense of the power and magnitude of the Kingdom of Midas,” say curator Dr. C. Brian Rose. “King Midas has been a great fascination to many for some 2,500 years.” penn.museum

Before Tony Bennett turns 90 in August, the self-proclaimed last of the saloon singers of standard song hits Sands Bethlehem Casino on May 14 and Atlantic City’s Borgata in July. Beyond witnessing the miracle of living and aging well, there are myriad reasons to see and hear Bennett live. The first is that, frankly, he’s a magician onstage. Immensely capable of loud vocal runs, Bennett is fond of pulling the microphone away from his mouth—without amplification— and booming. And while far younger artists take years to develop one song, Bennett has recorded 10 new albums since 2000, including his chart-topping collaboration with Lady Gaga, Cheek to Cheek. Simply put, Bennett is the definition of hip. He knows what medium to hit and when (MTV Unplugged when MTV was cool), and how to remain vital and modern without eschewing his Tin Pan Alley stylings (working with Gaga)—and he always looks the part of the sartorially smart crooner, never without a suit and a tie, never less than debonair. “It’s not a style. Not old or new. It just is,” Bennett told me last year about his work and the timelessness of his vibe. As he first sang back in 1965, Tony Bennett still rules the world. sandseventcenter.com; theborgata.com

Whether or not you’re inclined to throw on a bat suit when heading to Center City, the idea of meeting caped and costumed celebrities from the worlds of TV and film can bring out the fangirl or fanboy in the best of us. This June 2–5, the Philadelphia Convention Center offers just such an opportunity when Wizard World Comic Con comes
to town, bringing with it a bevy of action stars—think Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Michael J. Fox, and David Duchovny—poised to pose for pictures and sign autographs. Think Comic Con’s just for kids? Not so, says fan favorite Jason David Frank, better known to Mighty Morphin Power
Ranger devotees as Tommy Oliver or the Green Ranger. “Comic Con is a fun, familyatmosphere event for everybody,” says the seventh-degree black belt (he runs a chain of karate schools) and self-described “people person.” While Frank got his start as a Power Ranger back in the ’90s, he says that Netflix and social media have
reenergized fans, who are now mostly in their 20s and 30s and have kids of their own. “You have to go check it out,” he urges to those who’ve yet to let their fan flag fly. “You get to see your favorite stars; you get toys and comic books. Stay Tuned Producer extraordinaire NaNcy Glass talks tV, traVeling, and her eVerexPanding “whim factory.”
Nancy Glass walks fast. Very fast. On this warm spring day, she is darting in and out of the maze of offices of her 12-yearold, two-story Main Line production company, Nancy Glass Productions—soon to be Glass Entertainment Group, she says excitedly. “We’re rebranding because we have partner companies so it’s better not to have just my name.” But it’s Glass’s vision— and “psychotically optimistic” nature—that catapulted the veteran news anchor of Philly’s Evening Magazine in the ’80s to her current status as television production queen. Nearly 10 shows are keeping Glass’s team busy this spring, including Animal Planet’s popular Tanked and the Travel Channel’s Uncommon Grounds starring La Colombe cofounder Todd Carmichael. Other programs with catchy two-word titles are also in various states of development: Desert Flippers, Texas Vets, Deadly Dragons. Glass’s travel schedule can be grueling—in March alone she bounced between Houston, New Orleans, New York, LA, and Dubai—but she loves having her headquarters close to home. Gauging the success of a show is as unpredictable as her schedule. “This is really a whim factory,” she says. “You don’t know what’s going to hit. You just do your best and put everything you have into every project.” nancyglassproductions.com

Lord & Taylor has long been synonymous with the timeless elegance of the American Beauty rose—ever since President Dorothy Shaver picked the bloom for the company’s logo in 1937, to be exact—but flowers, much like fashion, change with the seasons. “We researched thousands of roses to find the type that best represented the brand’s adventurous spirit and modern approach to fashion,” says current president Liz Rodbell. “The Free Spirit, with its multiple colors and beautiful blooms, felt like just the right fit.” To celebrate the choice, the Free Spirit Rose initiative, helmed by Fashion Director Stephanie Solomon, features exclusive design collaborations with more than 20 of the fashion industry’s most lauded talents and lables, including Karl Lagerfeld Paris, Franco Sarto and B. Brian Atwood. “Stephanie was the driving force behind the execution of this collection,” says Rodbell. “She pushed the designers and our merchants to create exclusive pieces. The results are outstanding.” The inspiration can be almost literal, as in Franco Sarto’s painterly espadrilles, or sublimated into something decidedly dreamy, like the îî

Elsewhere, the collection proves that floral prints are anything but homogeneous: Dresses by Lagerfeld, Vince Camuto, Tommy Hilfiger, and Ivanka Trump embrace the bloom’s outlines in splashy colors, amorphous shapes, and large-format lace. “The reason the concept of the rose is so apropos is that it is feminine, multi-layered, and strong,” says Solomon. The idea to reimagine the rose had been germinating with Lord & Taylor’s creative team for some time, until finally fate seemed to demand it. “We began discussing this eight months ago and then went to one runway show during Spring Fashion Week and the entire space was filled with roses,” says Solomon.
“After that we went to the Michael Kors show, and the theme was roses. It was one of those wonderful ‘aha!’ moments.” To complement the initiative’s collaborative designs, Lord & Taylor’s Birdcage shop-in-shop takes the concept beyond the world of fashion. “We stocked The Birdcage with products you can’t find anywhere else—like a rose scent, or a T-shirt with a rose on it—and even took it to the idea of rosé wine,” says Solomon. “The amount of creative freedom that we allowed ourselves with the rose produced many surprises, and [that] has customers coming back again and again—everybody wants to be surprised and delighted.” 121 E. As American as apple pie, Derek Lam’s classic sportswear has long been a staple in the wardrobes of Philadelphia’s best-dressed. The designer’s carefully considered signature detailing is just one facet of the design aesthetic that has earned his eponymous brand, founded in 2002, wide acclaim after 12 years honing his craft at Michael Kors. Granted awards by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2005 and 2007, Lam boasts a serious talent for softening structure with femininity that comes through in his approachable collection of ready-to-wear and accessories. During Fashion Week, Lam dazzled with belowthe-knee skirts and form-fitting turtlenecks. On April 20, Lam, along with Neiman Marcus Senior Vice President and Fashion Director Ken Downing, will present his Pre-Fall and Fall 2016 collections during a VIP fashion show at Neiman Marcus for supporters of the Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia Charter School, followed the next day by a Neiman Marcus-hosted Derek Lam Fall 2016 trunk show for the public. “Fashion brings excitement, whether it’s about a new silhouette or color,” says Lam. “In the same way, our involvement with Boys’ Latin hopefully will bring extra attention to a great Philadelphia school.” Neiman Marcus, King of Prussia Mall, 610-9626200; dereklam.com

Science and style have struck a chic balance in Philadelphia: Last year, longstanding biomedical research center The Wistar Institute—founded here in 1892 and renowned for having created the first rabies and rubella vaccines—paired with Philly-based fashion label Supra Endura for a collection of silk scarves and pocket squares splashed with colorful images of the very microbes that Wistar’s scientists study. This season those abstract visuals—like a striking, deeply hued print of the rabies virus transposed with florals—will adorn tops

and dresses in Supra Endura’s Fall 2016 collection. Think of them as the ultimate conversation pieces, says Gabrielle Mandel, who founded the brand with the idea of representing nonprofits through fashion. “It’s a way to tell the organization’s story through print design,” she says. For Wistar, the alliance has engaged a new generation of supporters, says the center’s media rep, Darien Sutton: “It’s been a way to connect with the younger, fashionable set and share the importance of research.” wistar.org, supraendura.com

STYLE LAUNCH Nicole Miller’s newest collection brings prints and brights to swim and beach pieces like this Paradise Island Habotai Caftan, Nicole Miller La Plage ($275).
To The Beach!
Owner of Nicole Miller Philadelphia Mary Dougherty says it best when she describes the hometown-favorite designer as “always fresh, exciting, and relevant.” And now that the contemporary designer has launched La Plage—her firstever beach capsule collection— it’s more fitting than ever. “This collection is inspired by my lifestyle,” Miller says of the new line full of fun prints, color, and everything from swim to cover-ups, caftans, and rash guards. “I kept in mind all the different things I might be doing, from sports to throwing something over a swimsuit to go to lunch or hopping in the jeep to go shopping.” While some pieces add versatility to your shore sartorial circuit and others add a dose of sexy, one piece Miller suggests for the luxe downtown trendsetter is the lattice neck dress. “It can easily go from beach to city and back; it would fit right in at Congress Hall in Cape May,” she says for those making a weekend getaway to local shores. And what does this new collection mean for Philly shoppers? “It’s exciting,” Dougherty says. “Now every aspect of our customers’ lives is covered by Nicole in every way.” Nicole Miller at The Bellevue, 200 S. teetering fascinators, the sidelines are a sea of colorful chapeaux worn by throngs of suburban tastemakers. This season, versatility rules. “Everything is becoming much more informal,” says Kate Lawson, owner of Menagerie (610-9711769), of this season’s looks. “People want hats they can wear all summer long, post
events.” For toppers to don during (and after) the hoopla, opt for “wide brims lavishly trimmed as well as simple, sweet sunhats for the ladies,” suggests Debby Bradley of That’s Hats in Chadds Ford (thatshats.com). And for the gents? “Natural straw fedoras and gambler-styles.” And while some may opt
for versatility, style maven Joan Shepp (joanshepp.com) prefers to bring it back to basics. “They can’t be big enough,” says Shepp, who exclusively carries Christine A. Moore fascinators, which have been worn by Katy Perry, Halle Berry, and Kate Upton. “The whole idea of the incredible hats is that it’s rooted in tradition.”
The season’s biggest trend, Bradley offers, is ladylike colors, from quartz pink and pale blue to shades of nude. And for those headed to the biggest show of all—the Kentucky Derby—stick with shoulderwidth hats for comfort and easy travel. Says Bradley, “Comfort is key to looking like a winner.”

FINE TIMEPIECES WITH ATHLETIC PROWESS ARE TAKING THE GROWING WOMEN’S WATCH MARKET BY STORM.
STYLE BEAUT Y PiperWai has generated more than $1 million in sales since being featured on Shark Tank in late 2015.
With their all-natural deodorant PiPerWai flying off the shelves, tWo young Philly entrePreneurs are finding that success smells oh so sWeet. By Christina Pellegrini
After inking a deal with Shark Tank’s Barbara Corcoran, PiperWai founders Jess Edelstein and Sarah Ribner are turning Philadelphia— and the world—onto their cult-favorite charcoal cream formula deodorant. The appeal? PiperWai is both highefficiency and all-natural, using activated charcoal
88 phillystylemag.com
(which can absorb up to 1000 times its weight in moisture) instead of the pore-clogging aluminum and parabens found in mainstream brands. The friends and business partners met in fourth grade at Wynnewood’s Friends’ School. Ribner made the switch to natural products in college, and Edelstein
started dabbling in the kitchen with her own formulas before launching PiperWai. “After almost a year of trial and error, Jess concocted the initial formula, which she gave to me to try during a volunteer trip in South America,” Ribner says. They’ve made more than $1 million in sales since their Shark Tank episode
aired in December and have just expanded to a second production facility in King of Prussia. Even as they prepare to launch a new stick deodorant later this year, the duo still can’t believe their success. “It’s mind-blowing to me that we’ve grown this quickly,” says Ribner. piperwai.com

GoinG to ExtrEmEs Wickedly funny actress Kaitlin Olson talks about playing the devilish sweet Dee on it’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the delightfully fun Destiny in Pixar’s upcoming Finding Dory—and shares why the City of Brotherly Love will always be her adopted hometown. by marni PriCharD manko photography by BoDE hELm
After 11 seAsons of playing the debased, crass Deandra “sweet Dee” reynolds on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Kaitlin olson is flipping her latest character study on its head with her outing as Destiny in Pixar’s new Finding Dory, the sequel to 2003’s blockbuster smash Finding Nemo, out June 17. “It’s been my dream forever to do a Pixar movie,” says olson of her part as a loveable whale shark who serves as a sidekick to ellen DeGeneres’s Dory as she sets off to find her parents. “When I got the phone call to do this movie, I was seriously just beside myself. I didn’t know what the project was, I didn’t know what the character would be, but I was like ‘Yes, yes, I’ll do it,’ because I don’t care what it is, I adore Pixar movies.” four years later—and with endless voiceover sessions for the film under her belt—she loves the final result. “the movie’s just so sweet and goofy and silly.”

“The role of PhiladelPhia is The one grounded characTer ThaT These five awful PeoPle [ on iT’s always sunny] have To inTeracT wiTh.” But Olson’s path to the Monterey Marine Life Institute, where Dory and Destiny navigate some choppy waters in the movie, has been anything but kiddie fare. A member of the famed improv group The Groundlings, she appeared in flicks such as Vacation and The Heat, and on the small screen in New Girl, The Simpsons, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. She has also been tapped to play Mackenzie “Micky” Murphy, a freeloader with a bad attitude who’s thrust into family life in The Mick, a prospective new series she’s starring in and co-executive producing. Yet it’s her role as Sweet Dee in It’s Always Sunny that not only has made her career, but also introduced her to her husband, Sunny co-star and native Philadelphian Rob McElhenney. “I find her to be so ridiculous, it’s pathetic,” Olson says of Dee, one of five scheming characters who stake claim to the imaginary Paddy’s Pub in South Philly (fun fact: In real life Olson and McElhenney are part owners of Mac’s Tavern in Old City). “But acting her out is so hilarious. If I were a character that was winning all the time, it would be so boring. I don’t know how you would sympathize or empathize with that person.” Despite the depravity of the gang, she insists there’s one redeeming character in the cast: the city of Philadelphia. “The role of Philadelphia is the one grounded character that these five awful people have to interact with,” she says. “We can be as ridiculous as possible, but our surroundings are tough and smart and aren’t going to let us get away with anything.”
92
phillystylemag.com
That’s just what her husband—who hails from a big South Philly Irish Catholic family—envisioned when he helped create the show. Indeed, there’s no shortage of Philly pride in their household. “It’s just such a friendly, welcoming city, and the people are so lovely,” says Portland native Olson of her adopted hometown. “The thing that stands out the most is that every time we go to Philly to shoot, everybody’s so excited to see us. One time we shut down Market Street at 5 o’clock on a Friday and people were fine with it. We were shocked. We thought we were going to get screamed at, but everybody was pulled over and watching and smiling and waving and taking pictures and saying hi.” The couple now calls Los Angeles home, but their Philly pride runs so deep that Olson even went into labor with her first of their two children at a Phillies game. “Because of all the tie-ins with the show, we’ve become friends with a bunch of the players,” she shares. “I had a feeling the baby might happen, but I was like ‘Oh, whatever, it’ll take forever. Let’s go to the game, I want to see our friends.’ We made it for a few hours but by the fourth inning I was like ‘OK, it’s time to go. It’s baby time.’” The couple will be back this summer to film for Sunny, but they are already planning to return for the holidays to spend time with family and friends. “This place is a big deal for us, she says. “We met on the show, got married, and now we have two kids. Philadelphia will always hold a very special place in our hearts.”

AS COMMERCE BECOMES INCREASINGLY CUTTHROAT AND PROFITABILITY IS CHAMPIONED AT ANY COST, IS THERE ROOM IN THE ECONOMIC EQUATION FOR KINDNESS, CONSCIENCE, AND HUMANE VALUES? MANY BUSINESS LEADERS ARE PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON THEIR HEARTS AND SAYING YES...
by kathy blackwell
For decades, the boom in new technologies and expanding markets led to massive corporate growth and record profits. But that bottom-line success came at a huge cost to the environment, labor practices, and our treatment of animals, from their mass confinement on factory farms to wildlife trafficking and laboratory testing. As we move deeper into the 21st century, however, a new story is emerging. Those same innovations and advancements are not only bringing more awareness to animal cruelty issues, but they’ve become a force for good in the hands of today’s most innovative corporate leaders and entrepreneurs. Companies like Walmart, Whole Foods Market, and Chipotle Mexican Grill are paving the way by using creative solutions to stop the exploitation of animals, and although these businesses are driven by the belief that it’s the right thing to do, they’re seeing huge financial benefits as well. It’s a simple matter of marrying our values with our business practices, says Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, the country’s largest animal protection organization. In his new book, The Humane Economy: How Innovators and Enlightened Consumers Are Transforming the Lives of Animals (HarperCollins/William Morrow), a hopeful follow-up to his 2011 best seller, The Bond: Our Kinship With Animals, Our Call To Defend Them, Pacelle explores how innovative entrepreneurs, Fortune 500 CEOs, and scientists are rallying around this social movement and leading us forward by eliminating cruel historic practices. Pacelle recently met with Whole Foods cofounder and co-CEO John Mackey, a pioneer and leader in animal welfare, to talk about this new movement. They spoke about companies they admire, the next practical steps, and exciting predictions for the future.

Is there a sea change under way in how businesses large and small engage with animals? Wayne Pacelle: I see an enormous change at work in our relationship with animals. I started an animal advocacy group when I was in college, and at that point animal protection was a protest movement. When your ideas are viewed as on the margins, it’s easy for people to shunt them aside, to cast them as heretical or radical. Almost 30 years later, they’re at the center of the economy, and we’re really experiencing a period of punctuated change in all sectors of the animal-use economy. We’re seeing big changes in food and agriculture, we’re seeing big changes in science and animal testing, and enormous changes in fashion, wildlife management, entertainment. One reason that I’m happy to be here with John is that he’s been a leader in the corporate world in marrying our values with our commerce. When you disassociate values from business, you get terrible outcomes—things like slavery and child labor and environmental despoliation. This time you not only get better outcomes when businesses have their activities filtered through the lens of a good value system, but now there are great economic opportunities because the values have permeated society, and animal welfare is a universal value. John Mackey: I think values have always been in business. What’s changing is that consciousness is evolving. One hundred years ago, women didn’t have the right to vote; 150 years ago, almost half the United States still had legalized slavery. Our consciousness is evolving in all these different areas where we’re more aware. Part of it’s because, with the Internet and social media, things are much more transparent. The livestock animal business is probably about the least transparent part of the entire world economy: Animals on these factory farms are hidden from the public’s view. People used to be able to see cows grazing and they’d see chickens running

The humane economy: how To help More consumers are putting their beliefs about animal welfare into practice, and those choices are driving much of the change in the marketplace. Everyone can make a difference, says Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, who offers these tips: Vote with your dollars: Every time you buy something, you vote for or against animal cruelty with your money. Make conscious choices when buying food, cosmetics, and clothing. And join groups that help animals. Stop wasting food: According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Americans throw out up to 40 percent of their food (including 22 percent of animal products), despite enormous costs in the form of greenhouse gas emissions, energy input, and food production expenses. We could spare more than a billion animals in the US alone every year just by eliminating food waste. Live as if all life matters: Adopt pets or foster them. Pick up plastic waste on beaches and in parks. The greatest antidote to cruelty is an informed and active citizenry. Influence lawmakers: Contact officials at the local, state, and federal levels about pending animal welfare legislation. humanesociety.org

around, and now they’re all in these shut-in giant sheds. The public doesn’t see that. Wayne and I have jointly sponsored a documentary film called At the Fork that’s going to raise consciousness. It’s going to have an impact. WP: There are animal documentaries every week that I’m learning about. Look at what Blackfish did with SeaWorld. This was one of the toughest entertainment companies out there. It was able to fend off activist protests for many years, but this single documentary upended that business model for the company. In the wake of that film, I was able to negotiate a landmark deal with the new CEO of SeaWorld and get the company to pledge to end all captive breeding of orcas and sunset its use of these creatures. SeaWorld also committed to a raft of other reforms, including redoubling its commitment to rescue and rehabilitation and joining in our global advocacy campaigns against commercial whale and seal and shark finning. JM: It’s a great example of the thesis that we’re talking about. What Blackfish revealed is the exploitative nature of using animals as entertainment and how these animals are enslaved and abused. And now it has upended the business model, because the public is outraged. WP: If only 15 or 20 percent of people in America are very visibly agitated, they can create a lot of trouble. JM: More like 5 percent, even. So it is evolving very rapidly. We’re living in this revolutionary time where we as a people are becoming more conscious. Diets are changing; the way we relate to animals is changing. Social media in particular makes things move very rapidly. In the food business, I’ve never seen as much change as there is right now, from online delivery to ingredient meals like Blue Apron and Plated to full-meal solutions and food trucks. WP: And we have companies that are innovating, like Hampton Creek, which is providing a plant-based egg substitute that’s hidden in the product. The consumer doesn’t even know the difference. It’s a functional equivalent in terms of the taste and texture. It’s not inconceivable that in 30 or 40 years we can produce meat in a laboratory setting where the meat is an animal product but without the brain or the heart and very little in the way of a moral problem. How do these options become embraced by consumers? WP: You need innovation and entrepreneurs who can develop the product and then market it. But I think you also need time—the ideas take a while to seep in. They marinate in society, and as they do, these things become acceptable. Look at gay marriage. We did a ballot measure in California in 2008 to stop extreme confinement of animals on factory farms. We thought we were going to lose, but we won, and we got more votes than any citizen initiative in American history at the time. On that same ballot, voters in California, which is viewed as among the most progressive of states, passed a ban on gay marriage. So from 2008 to 2016, we’ve seen a complete change on that issue. JM: Society is always evolving simply because old people die and young people come in and reach the majority. Now 80 million millennials are in this society, bigger than boomers. Boomers are retiring, some of them are dying, and so increasingly that millennial generation, which is more interested in the very things we’re talking about, is having a greater and greater influence. WP: If you believe that animals matter, that has practical implications for daily behavior, and once you convince people to align their beliefs with their behavior, that’s when you have a market opportunity. You have companies that can take advantage of that consciousness, like Whole Foods, Hampton Creek, or Cirque du Soleil. Ringling Bros. was one of the fiercest opponents of animal protection, but they gave up their elephants because they did the surveys: The customers didn’t want the elephants traveling to 120 different cities a year, living on chains for 22 hours a day, and they knew that was not something they could invest in while retaining the brand strength of the company, so they changed, which is also why SeaWorld agreed to end any breeding of orcas in order to sunset their use and make the existing whales the last generation at their parks. There are alternative forms of attracting and entertaining crowds. Cirque du Soleil showed that you can have amazing theatrical productions involving human acrobats and feats of incredible physicality, and it’s just so superior. You don’t have any of the moral baggage that comes with orcas or elephants in captive settings. What other changes are happening in entertainment? WP: The film situation is incredible. With computer-generated imagery, we have an incredible revolution that can take the live animals out of the equation but still give viewers a rich and superior experience. When you think of the toughest movie in terms of representing animals, it would probably be Noah. [Director] Darren Aronofsky used CGI to create this incredible animal diversity, and it was vivid and alive and authentic. The Planet of the Apes movies are the high watermark for this. You don’t need to victimize chimpanzees. This is how social change works: You no longer have the movie industry blocking an effort to protect chimpanzees that are endangered in the

wild. There was always an exemption because the biomedical people wanted to use chimps in experiments, and the movie people wanted to use them, but now we have alternatives to using chimps in laboratories and in the movies. Chimpanzees [are listed as] endangered, and they have a highly protected status now. JM: “Doom and gloomers” are always projecting a problem out into the future, not understanding the continual creativity and innovation part. I get asked a lot by journalists, “What do you think the world’s going to be like in 10 years?” Ten years ago, let’s see: Tesla cars did not exist. If you go back 15 years ago, no one was using an iPod; no one was using a smartphone, and there was no Facebook, there was no Twitter. The point is, there’s continual innovation; there’s continual creativity. That’s basically the ultimate resource: limitless human creativity. We will solve our problems in ways that we can’t even foresee now. WP: We’re solving the problems quicker. JM: That’s partly because we’re so much better connected. Innovations are copied quicker. If Whole Foods did something 20 years ago, it would take years for [it] to show up anywhere else. And now when we do a new store, not only can we copy our own innovations; everybody else does, too. Who is leading this current evolution? WP: One thesis in my book is there’s really an ensemble cast of people who are driving this change. There are entrepreneurs, consumers who are more

In this excerpt from The Humane Economy: How Innovators and Enlightened Consumers Are Transforming the Lives of Animals, Wayne Pacelle argues that animal welfare is the next great frontier in America’s cultural consciousness. We are in the midst—much closer to the beginning than to the end, I believe—of an epic political, cultural, and economic realignment in the treatment of animals. Doing something about a moral problem requires first identifying it and then intentionally breaking old habits and conventions. Confronting terrible injustices— from slavery and child labor to segregation to gender discrimination—was a painful and necessary part of our American tradition. With the availability of information on the Web, and the transparency it brings, it’s harder now to sidestep these questions. Just as people are shaken from their comfort zone when they realize that a T-shirt from a well-known clothing company was stitched together in some hellish, overcrowded factory in Bangladesh, more of us are connecting our choices and purchasing practices when it comes to matters of animal cruelty. Exposing abuses goes a long way in prompting sellers to get their supply chains in order, even as it better informs their customer base. Smart businesses want to get ahead of controversy and avoid protests, boycotts, and social-media campaigns that target them. We are seeing transformations in all sectors of the animal-use economy, and we will see many more. Once resolve has set in to change for the better, it’s easier than ever to make it happen. It’s not a matter of sacrifice—just conscious, better choices. Enlarging our vocabulary from “whaling” to “whale watching”
is just one example of an emerging shift in the manner we humans regard animals— whether in the wild, on the farm, in laboratories, or in our homes. The society we have now is different from what it was 25 or 100 or 200 years ago, with revolutionary advances in commerce, banking, currency, energy exploration, global transport, information technology, and computing. How can we not have a commensurate revolution in our treatment of animals? How can we tolerate the misery that comes from whaling, factory farming, trapping, and cruel industries of every kind once we recognize a more vibrant economic path forward, producing jobs that are better to hold, goods that are better to have, and a society in the end that is better to live in, without unlighted places where cruel things are permitted? conscious and alert, scientists who are helping with that, occasionally politicians who show great leadership. You also have huge philanthropy at work. We’re an enormously wealthy society in terms of having a lot of resources out there, and you have billionaires willing to invest in these issues. You’ve got Paul Allen, who is trying to solve problems, and you’ve got titans of capitalism like Carl Icahn who are trying to solve problems. And then you have corporations adapting. They know that they’re going to be roadkill if they don’t adjust to the new realities. JM: I’m pretty wealthy, and one of the things that happens is that you have all your needs taken care of, so then it’s a question of: Do you just pile up money for money’s sake or do you invest that money in ways that help the world to become a better place? WP: David Duffield, who founded PeopleSoft, a Silicon Valley company, committed $1 billion to solving euthanasia in dogs and cats in the late 1990s. He was mocked by a number of people: Why would you put all of that money into that kind of enterprise when we have so many human problems? Now you have philanthropists coming out of the woodwork on these issues. JM: People are beginning to realize that government doesn’t really solve many problems. Instead you have these twin forces: economic business entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs. Whole Foods has started three foundations, and they’ve all been very impactful in a short amount of time. So you’re combining the nonprofit model with the business model, and sometimes these work together. WP: Part of that ensemble cast that I talked about driving the change are animal scientists and ethnologists who are teaching us more about animals. It wasn’t that long ago that the dominant animal behavior theory was that animals operate just by instinct, that they’re like machines in the wild who are on an endless task of food gathering, mating, predation, and defense. Now we know that animals have feelings, emotions. Elephants have burial rituals; chimpanzees have rituals to honor family members who have passed away. We see incredible problem-solving, from crows to dolphins. Once you see that behavior, you can’t think of them as just this thing or commodity. And I think this increase in understanding animal consciousness layers over this social reform movement. That’s why no industry that’s exploiting animals in a severe way is going to be immune from this movement. One area we haven’t talked about too much is the animal testing issue, [which] can be completely overtaken by different technologies. What do you foresee happening in the near future? JM: I’ll make a prediction. What is building is a scientific consensus around health. Although there’s a very strong vested interest in keeping people ignorant by the dairy industry, cattle and meat industry, and processed food industry, there’s a strong scientific consensus that is building that eating either none or only small quantities of animal foods leads to optimum longevity. The longest-living people that we know of are all plant eaters. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes—they all correlate very strongly with the more animal food you eat. Sometime over the next five to 10 years, I predict you’re going to see a scientific consensus come around—just like it took a long time for science to gather enough data to overthrow the propaganda machine that the tobacco industry was. WP: It takes activists and scientists and all of that together. JM: That’s what’s happening with food now. We have a healthcare crisis in America; we have an obesity crisis. Eighty percent of the healthcare money that we spend, which is bankrupting us, is due to diet and lifestyle. And it’s avoidable. You’re going to see this growing scientific consensus about how to solve our healthcare issues, which will be lifestyle shifts, [which] will correlate well with the humane economy, because it’s very interesting that the thing that will help solve our healthcare crisis and our obesity epidemic is basically living in a more humane fashion and not exploiting animals. The exploitation of the animals is not just harming the animal; it’s harming us. That’s what people don’t understand. WP: Absolutely. I really like the word “humane.” I chose it very intentionally because the root word of “humane” is “human,” and we’re the ones who are creating the problems, so we’re the ones that can solve the problems. John’s point is really important: It just so happens that when we’re better to animals, we have better outcomes throughout society. Companies are going to be more successful when they have a more animal-friendly sensitivity.
FASHION FORWARD One of the biggest changes in the luxury world centers on the use of fur, as more high-end fashion houses embrace cruelty-free alternatives thanks to innovations in technology and sustainability. The fur-free movement took a significant step forward in March, when the Humane Society of the United States and the Fur Free Alliance, a coalition of 40 animal protection groups around the world, announced that the entire Armani Group would be going fur-free beginning with the Fall/Winter 2016 collections. “Technological progress made over the years allows us to have valid alternatives at our [disposal] that render the use of cruel practices unnecessary,” says Giorgio Armani, who first met with Wayne Pacelle in Milan in 2009 to discuss his brand’s use of fur. “Pursuing the positive process undertaken long ago, my company is now taking a major step ahead.” Armani joins other leading houses that have turned away from fur, including Hugo Boss, which just won the Humane Society’s Henry Spira Corporate Progress Award for its commitment to innovative, animalfriendly materials, and Stella McCartney, the first and only luxury brand to be completely vegan, avoiding leathers, skins, and feathers, as well as fur. Other big-name designers to go fur-free include Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein—and the ranks are growing.

According to a recent report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, if you haven’t struck it rich by the age of 35, it’s probably never going to happen. Not so with skin. For, regardless of good genes, UVA avoidance, and copious consumption of water, the vast majority of us will have a wealth of wrinkles by 35. No wonder the beauty industry reports an explosion of activity in antiaging products among consumers 35 and up. Offering salvation from the finest lines to the deepest crevices, “The age-specialist category,” says retail analyst Karen Grant of the NPD Group, “showed a 20 percent increase in 2015, the main growth coming from women over 35 who are buying and replenishing their products online.” And by all accounts, they’re buying in bulk. worth $5.2 billion. Almost half of that—$2.3 billion—is spent on prestige antiaging facial skincare, high-end products that offer high-tech hope of younger-looking skin for longer. “It has become almost like the cell phone industry, where each year there’s new technology and advancements,” says Grant. “It used to be that products were all-in-one—they were trying to do everything. Today, leading brands in antiaging offer products that are targeted to specific areas, whether it’s plumping and hydrating or focusing on fine lines and wrinkles.” Dr. Alexa Kimball, a professor of dermatology at Harvard, says, “It can be challenging for consumers to find the best products for their skin. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get results, but concentrations of ingredients matter, and formulations
matter.” She lists retinoids, alpha hydroxy acid, and salicylic acid as important for cell turnover, and moisturizers to boost the skin’s moisture barrier, which is depleted as we age, especially after menopause, causing dryness and dullness. CHANEL | SubLimagE Claims: Infinite regeneration, thanks to the key ingredient, vanilla planifolia, a botanical from Madagascar. The fruit and flowers are handpicked between April and May, then shipped to the Chanel Research and Technology Center, just outside of Paris, for a purification process known as Chrono-Extraction. This produces the most potent of active molecules, known as Éphémères de Planifolia, which are responsible for boosting the enzymes proven to help skin regenerate and look younger. chanel.com Our tester reports: “I tend not to associate Chanel with high-tech skincare. Fragrances, cosmetics, body creams, absolutely. But rigorous research and development, unique purification technology, and rare and potent natural botanicals (sustainably cultivated, too)? “Chanel’s commitment to being a top player in the antiaging category is manifested in Sublimage. It’s a fantastic range of products. As well as the luxury of the delicious fragrance, the rich bronze packaging, and the custard-thick indulgent textures, it actually works. “Yes, after four weeks of religiously using the products, I noticed my skin had a smoother, plumper, bouncier texture, which meant wrinkles and fine lines were less obvious, my makeup looked and felt better… heck, I didn’t even need as much makeup. “Sublimage is a beautiful skincare experience. And to celebrate its 10th anniversary, Chanel has launched three new densities of the cornerstone product, La Crème. For my dry skin, I preferred the medium texture, but the

brand:
LA MER Claims: Profound powers of skin transformation, derived from potent, highly active ingredients like nutrient-rich algae, protective antioxidant extracts, and semiprecious stones through a unique three- to four-month bio-fermentation process. La Mer was created by Dr. Max Huber, an aerospace scientist, following an accident that left him with severe chemical burns for which he could find no relief. cremedelamer.com Our tester reports: “In the first week of the testing, the Renewal Oil (which goes on first) and brand-new Genaissance de la Mer created a noticeable texture difference to my skin. The Renewal Oil immediately absorbed, and the Genaissance was simply magnificent, making my face feel fresh and energized. After the second week of using them together, I saw small lines disappear and the whole of my face felt a bit fuller and livelier. Then, with every week, I noticed more softness, brightness, and an alert appearance. “One of the most refreshing aspects of the regime was the Lifting Eye Serum, which was gentle yet packed a punch. After only one week, the skin around my eyes was noticeably firmer and brighter, and more youthful, especially in the areas where I was collecting crow’s-feet. After three weeks, the evening’s application of serum came to feel like a minifacial for my eyes. “After day-and-night usage over six weeks, my face carried a natural suppleness, smoothness, even tone, and brightness that did not exist prior. My makeup also began to look so much better, more natural. And the fine lines that always seemed to peer through my foundation? Gone. Overall, my skin is much more alive. And happier!”

SISLEY | SISLEÿA Claims: This iconic product range aims to tackle behavioral aging (also called epigenetic) as well as genetic aging. Stress, sun, pollution, too much partying… all of these external factors cause a “jamming” of the skin cells’ life cycle and reduce the skin’s ability to repair and renew itself. New, powerful active ingredients, such as Lindera extract, Persian acacia extract, and yeast and soya protein complex, are said to help restore the cellular cycle’s functioning mechanisms. sisley-paris.com Our tester reports: “With its roots in the country that coined the phrase ‘femme fatale’ and its three-generationsdeep reputation as the go-to skincare provider for some of the most beautiful women in the world, it’s no surprise that my Sisley Paris antiaging regime delivered results that can only be described as très bien! “Following a simple four-part plan, these new high-tech products were easily integrated into my daily routine. I began to look forward to the nostalgic fragrance each morning when applying the Sisleÿa Essential Skincare Lotion. With the lotion quickly absorbed into the skin, my face immediately felt more nourished. Despite the ultramodern plant-based formulations, the serum happily felt decidedly natural. Soon it was a favorite must-have, one I began to pack in my handbag for quick midday or in-flight hydration. “The Daily Line Reducer, while its scent was reminiscent of a self-tanner, packed the biggest and most surprising wallop of the four products. Used liberally on my décolletage, fine lines and wrinkles were visibly minimized in just three days—even without my glasses! It’s as close to a miracle product as I’ve ever experienced. “The Eye & Lip Contour Cream and brand-new L’Integral Anti-Age moisturizer delivered a hydrated, firmer skin texture, with results peaking at about three weeks. While a bit heavy for daytime use, generous evening applications of the duo-moisturizers on my notoriously dry skin delivered a déjà vu of sorts from 10 years earlier.”
brand:
DIOR | Capture totale Claims: Intense correction of all visible signs of aging, acting upon stem cells at the heart of the skin. Discovered in Madagascar 20 years ago by Dior ethnobotanists, Longoza is the antiaging “jewel” in Capture Totale’s ingredients. The brand’s scientists claim it has exceptional regenerative powers on skin cells. dior.com Our tester reports: “If you have dry skin, fine lines, and volume loss, I would highly recommend Dior Capture Totale. And I don’t say this lightly. Relying until now on good genes—and being lazy to boot—I wasn’t looking forward to using a regimen of products, but I grew to love the structure of the routine. And the products are gorgeous. “Within just two to three weeks, I saw a huge improvement in my skin. I had never used a morning routine, mistakenly believing skin needed a few hours to absorb moisturizers. But the lightness of the Multi-Perfection Crème Universal hydrated my skin without greasiness, allowing me to use less concealer and foundation and rendering my lines—especially those annoying ones around the mouth—less noticeable. I realized I was now repairing my skin rather than having to apply more makeup to conceal its shortcomings. I was floored by the lightness of the products, and yet as soon as I applied them, I could feel them starting to work. I did not lose dark spots, but by week five, my skin definitely felt firmer and far less dry. “These days, makeup is less essential for me, as my skin is well hydrated and my tone is more even. I especially love Dream Skin, which I began to use as an around-the-eye brightener but now use all over. It’s neither a tint nor a moisturizer, and yet the dreamy lotion gives my face a radiant glow.”

LA PRAIRIE | Skin Caviar Claims: Pure caviar extract is packed with amino acids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals and tested to profoundly improve the skin’s appearance of firmness, elasticity, and tone. Formerly the caviar extract was sourced from wild sturgeon, long believed to offer the highest quality available. Now La Prairie has discovered an alternative high-quality source in the Baerli sturgeon, grown sustainably on aqua-farms. laprairie.com Our tester reports: “The La Prairie experience is a 10 out of 10. The first step, the Liquid Caviar Lift, goes on easily and only requires a small amount— one to two short pumps—to cover your face and neck. It’s a nice light layer, preparing skin for the next step, the Luxe Cream and Eye Lift, which provides a really luxurious layer of moisture and which absorbs nicely. While these are among the priciest of products I have tried, I use far less, so they will last much longer. “After four weeks of using the products, someone in my office asked me if I had work done! My fine lines are reduced, and the overall look of my skin is great. I am going to be 50 this year and have never had any kind of fillers or Botox, so the fact is, someone noticed the positive effects of La Prairie enough to ask me if I did anything! “Finally, the Skin Caviar Foundation is exceptional. One or two small dabs gives just the right coverage to reduce redness and age spots and leave my skin looking smooth, radiant, and even-toned. It’s the best I have ever used—hands down. “My husband, who now knows that I have been in a trial, says he notices a change and says I look refreshed and youthful. He said I should keep doing the routine! Those were his words, not mine.”

Researchers are continuing to discover that men and women are more different psychologically and physiologically than realized. It turns out that major illnesses such as heart disease and lung cancer are indeed influenced by gender. Research shows that women are more likely to develop certain chronic illnesses and have different symptom presentation and response to treatment than men, and may need different treatment approaches. Today’s groundbreaking medical and scientific advancements along with technology are expanding our knowledge and improving care. Bolstering women’s health not only decreases illness and disease, but has far-reaching benefits on the individual as well as her entire household, community, and society in general. Dr. Grewal remarks that “One-third of our day is meant to be spent sleeping. We need to power down the television, laptop, and smartphone, avoid alcohol, and learn effective strategies to put our worries to rest, so that we can get our rest.” Research shows that nearly half of all women experience sleep disturbances as they enter menopause. “Reproductive hormones or the lack of them can result in hot

She goes on to explain that after a comprehensive sleep evaluation, a sleep study may be ordered for evaluation of sleep apnea. Short-term hormone replacement therapy may be appropriate in some situations. Antidepressants and non-pharmacologic therapy like cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia may help in some cases of insomnia in postmenopausal women. Dr. Grewal notes that “because women tend to experience fatigue instead of daytime sleepiness” when they do not get adequate sleep, they are less likely to realize they have a problem.

HEALTHY LIVING current facts reveal that two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women. Groundbreaking research discoveries at the Penn Memory Center, along with its excellence in diagnosis and treatment of memory loss including comprehensive Alzheimer’s patient programs, has earned the program designation as a National Institute on Aging Alzheimer’s Disease Center. “We are one of only 30 such sites in the nation and the only center in the Philadelphia area with this designation,” says Dr. John Trojanowski, director of the Penn Memory Center. Dr. Trojanowski explains that, “In order to develop drugs, biomarkers, and other treatments, you first need to find the causative agents. Over the last 25 years, our center’s research laboratories have uncovered the structure of three lesions that lead to degenerative brain disease.” These lesions cause nerve cells in the brain to die or no longer function normally, which affect memory, behavior, and the ability to think clearly. A critical challenge for patients with Alzheimer’s is getting accurately diagnosed. Dr. Jason Karlawish, co-director of Penn Memory Center, asks, “If you are diagnosed or concerned with heart disease you go to a cardiologist. If you are concerned about Alzheimer’s, who do you go to?” The focus of the center is on treating individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and other age-related progressive memory disorders. “Specialized memory centers are uniquely equipped to diagnose patients as well as

Our eyes can say a lot about us. They provide a unique window into our health and how we are feeling. “Rejuvenating the area in and around the eye can have a dramatic effect on helping us see better as well as making us look fresher and more alert,” says Dr. Jacqueline Carrasco, associate clinical professor of Ophthalmology and Oculoplastic Surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital. Oculoplastic surgeons are ophthalmologists who specialize in reconstructive and plastic surgery around the eyes—eyelids, eyebrows, bones of the orbits, and tear ducts. “In addition to providing a variety of cosmetic improvements, we also repair deficits that may result from the removal of cancerous growths and for medical conditions, such as ptosis,” Dr. Carrasco says. Ptosis, or droopy eyes, can affect vision and its prevalence increases as we age. “Blepharoplasty is surgery of the upper and/or lower eyelids; it helps people have a better view of the world and provides them with a more youthful appearance,”

Infertility is more
common than many are aware, affecting nearly 15 percent of couples in some way. Even under ideal circumstances, getting pregnant is not easy. “At age 30, the odds of getting pregnant are 20 to 25 percent a month. At age 40, it drops to four to six percent,” says John J. Orris, DO, MBA, division head of Reproduction Endocrinology & Infertility for Main Line Health System. Today, more couples than ever are turning to Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), which includes in vitro fertilization, to help build families. In 2012, there were 61,000 babies (1.5 percent of the 3.9 million births) conceived with the help of ART.
This increasing rate has been attributed to evaluations being performed earlier. Dr. Orris notes, “In the past, couples would often seek consultation with a fertility expert after a year of trying to get pregnant without success. However, time is of the essence as women age and problems take time to fix. You may want to consider consultation after six months if you have not been successful.” Iinsurance companies often cover the initial reproductive physical in its entirety. “It consists of a physical exam, transvaginal ultrasound, and a blood test to measure reproductive hormones,” Dr. Orris explains. “We also perform a semen analysis on the male.”

that she was a carrier of a mutated BRCA1 gene. The BRCA gene normally produces tumor suppressor proteins that help repair damaged DNA. But when there is a mutation, DNA damage may not be able to be repaired and can increase the likelihood of developing cancer. Studies have shown that women with this mutation have a 45–65 percent risk of developing breast cancer and an 11–39 percent risk of developing ovarian cancer over their lifetime. In comparison, the average woman has a 12 percent risk of developing breast cancer and a 1.4 percent risk of developing ovarian cancer over her lifetime. Jolie’s story moved women with a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer or those who have developed breast cancer at an early age to follow her lead. “Referrals to testing centers increased by over 50 percent after that,” says Dr. Generosa Grana, medical oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. Heart disease is the number one killer of women and takes more women’s lives than all cancers combined, according to Dr. Vincent M. Figueredo, chief of Clinical Cardiology at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia. Despite these devastating statistics, awareness remains alarmingly low, he says, in part because so much mainstream focus is on cancer. “Many of the cancers—breast or uterine— directly affect women. It’s devastating for them, and the course of the disease is longer.” Yet statistics show
that while 1 in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, 1 in 3 dies from heart disease. Dr. Figueredo adds that heart disease studies now include women and men equally; historically, studies were largely performed with male subjects. He explains that while men typically have a blockage of a major artery, women can have heart attacks related to milder blockages or spasms of the artery and have a higher incidence of heart attacks due to severe physical or emotional stress. “Women can have different types of heart attacks while men classically have a blockage of an artery feeding the heart muscle,” he says. Women also present different symptoms than men: Fifty
percent of women will have the sudden chest pain that most men experience, but they can also have sudden fatigue, shortness of breath, indigestion, and pain in the neck, jaw, shoulder, arm, or back. Because of the mixed bag of symptoms and their intensity, women typically delay treatment and therefore have a higher mortality rate than men, according to Dr. Figueredo. Knowing the symptoms is as important as making lifestyle choices that prevent heart disease, he says: “In my practice, I tell patients to eat healthy and to exercise at least four days a week— ideally for an hour of sustained aerobic activity. And don’t smoke. Period.” Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, 5501 Old York Road, Philadelphia, 800346-7834; einstein.edu

color your world Get your floral fix this sprinG with a wow-worthy window box.
With the tight quarters of Philadelphia neighborhoods, urban gardening can be notoriously tricky. But green thumbs can still indulge their passion for horticulture with a window box—and this time of year there’s no shortage of botanical eye candy, from South Philly’s row homes to Center City’s brownstones.

Window boxes are a popular way to bring color and style to the front of a home, says Claudia Roux, owner of Old City florist Petit Jardin en Ville (petit jardinenville.com). “They’re especially useful for city living where green space can be difficult to find,” she adds, noting that Philadelphia is one of the most popular
cities in the country for window boxes. This spring, the emphasis is on the actual box itself: Roux suggests containers with a more natural look, such as wood or metal in a neutral tone like black or gray, and also stresses the importance of rotating plantings based on the season. “Ideal plants to bring in
texture are herbs, many of which flower,” she says. “Heather, allium, and salvia have interesting shapes as well as color.” And don’t forget to think vertical. “Utilize the entire space by adding trailing plants like variegated ivy and creeping phlox.” Now sit back and watch your garden flow.

E-LUXE! ANTIQUES AFICIONADOS ARE BUZZING ABOUT RUBYLUX, A NEW ONLINE MARKETPLACE FOR LUXURY VINTAGE. BY MATT STEWART
Since debuting in October, the online antiques retailer RubyLUX has turned the booming e-marketplace model on its head. Following the success of Ruby Lane, which he launched in 1998, CEO and founder Tom Johnson melded his experiences as a successful e-commerce guru and a collector of antiques and objets to create an unorthodox but compelling platform for the online sale of see-them-tobelieve-them vintage pieces. At RubyLUX, dealers pay a monthly subscription fee instead of a commission on individual items, a model that “gives us more flexibility in making communication transparent between dealers and consumers,” says Johnson. Additionally, his handpicked team brings expertise and strong relationships to the site. “My staff is very knowledgeable in antiquities, art, and vintage,” he notes. “We are looking for the best, so I’m relying on the relationships [they] have built over the years to provide that. “It is a luxury industry, so being able to curate that effectively involves knowing the industry firsthand,” adds Johnson, who has been working with antiques dealers for 18 years. “I’m an avid collector of a wide range of things, which helps facilitate the best way to connect dealers and clients.” Connection established. rubylux.com

Rikumo’s chic offerings include (CLOCKWISE FROM UPPER LEFT): Cast iron tray ($80); Hinoki bath salts ($28); Azmaya ceramic tea mugs ($62 each); Claire organic cotton towels (washcloth, $15; hand towel, $27; bath towel, $67).
EASTERN IMPORTS When online shopping for far-flung finds doesn’t cut it, there are a handful of shops in Philadelphia that offer a truly tactile experience—but none do so with as much style as Rikumo, a lifestyle boutique stocked with of-the-moment Japanese brands. “You can

immediately tell this is something different,” says manager Magali Roman. First opened in the Loft District in 2009 by husband-and-wife team Yuka and Kaz Morihata, Rikumo moved to this larger Center City location in early 2016. The chic boutique’s
minimalist aesthetic offers as much design inspiration as the carefully displayed goods themselves. Many of the most popular items are everyday essentials: Binchotan charcoal toothbrushes and face masks; Hinoki Himalayan bath salts; Banko Yaki
ceramic table settings; and don’t forget about the towels, a worthy addition to any linen closet (the Yoshii towel—chambray on one side, terrycloth on the other—is one of Rikumo’s best finds). After shopping, have a seat at the community dining table for complimentary Japanese
tea. “Japan is a very modern culture, yet has a rich history of craftsmanship and a certain way of doing things,” says Roman. “But [those aspects] can still exist in the present for a lifestyle that’s very functional.” 1216 Walnut St., 215609-4972; rikumo.com

138 phillystylemag.com
Developer Eric Blumenfeld was headed to Temple University from Center City about 10 years ago when he suddenly looked at North Broad Street through different eyes. “‘Wow,’ I said to myself, ‘there are some beautiful buildings up here,’” he remembers. “What potential.” Potential is now reality, as Blumenfeld has reconstituted 640 North Broad and the Wilkie car dealership
and, in late 2015, the Thaddeus Stevens school administration building into residential and commercial spaces, which include such restaurants as Osteria and Vie. Now he has his sights set on North Broad’s most iconic structures—the towering Divine Lorraine Hotel and the unassuming Metropolitan Opera House at 858 North Broad. Both are more than 100 years old
and will take extensive work to become what he envisions—condos and restaurants for the Divine (he says by the end of 2016) and performance space for the Met—but Blumenfeld thinks they are the capstones of his decade of development. “The day we closed on 640, I could only see poverty, but once we turned the lights on, that all changed,” he says. “And
the community that came there is taking charge. Philly people want to be pioneers in a new place, and they have transformed this one like mad.” Other developers are now moving into the area he “discovered,” but rather than bothered, Blumenfeld is welcoming. “One plus one is seven. Their projects will only enhance mine, and that is a good thing,” he says. thedivinelorrainehotel.com

For serious car enthusiasts, most hybrids and electrics on the market have been missing that stop-and-stare wow factor—and then there’s the new BMW i8. This sophisticated plug-in electric-gas hybrid sports car is an enigmatic looker, appreciated by everyone from inveterate car buffs to clueless gawkers. Low-slung and faintly menacing, the BMW i8 is surprisingly
small and visually provocative, with an exoskeleton of aluminum and carbon fiber, surface panels of reinforced plastic and glass, and exotic scissor-action doors. With a complex hybrid set-up of two electric motors and 1.5-liter twin-turbo, three-cylinder gas-powered engine, the i8 produces a combined 357 horsepower. While the BMW i8 reflects the hybrid combinations now
coming to dominate Grand Prix motor sports, the 94-mpg EPA rating is an impressive value boost for a car already very reasonably priced at $150,000. “BMW’s pure plug-in electric may appeal to city drivers, especially in Philadelphia where charging posts have popped up,” says David Sloane, owner of BMW of Devon. Just plug and play. bmwofdevon.com

MaxiMuM ExposurE Slick Stonework and a cool collection of contemporary art make thiS juSt-liSted rittenhouSe home a prime Setting for entertaining. By JoAnn Greco
When Ken Karlan first toured the new penthouse on the 17th floor of Parc Rittenhouse, he liked what he didn’t see: no kitchen, no bathrooms, no closets. “There was nothing here,” he says with a laugh. “The ceilings were open, the floors were raw concrete, there were no interior walls. There. Was. Nothing.” The blank slate, he says, offered him the opportunity to customize everything. Pulling together a locally based design team that included husband-and-wife architects Gavin Riggal and Juliet Geldi and general contractor Victor Brubaker, Karlan worked through “about a dozen different layouts.” His only requirement: that his private quarters—a master bedroom suite and an office—be at one end of the 5,000-plus-squarefoot condo, and two guestrooms be all the way at the other end. In between: a lot of open space. Interior designer Tina Delia, also from Philadelphia, “was instrumental in pulling everything together,” he says. Karlan turned to Stone Source to help him select the dazzling array of granites, limestones, and marbles that now compose seemingly
every surface (including the four-and-a-half bathrooms) in the home. Visitors see that first in the kitchen, where a dramatic Carrera marble island holds court and plays off of white cabinetry and black granite countertops studded with amenities such as warming drawers and a built-in grill and steamer. Perhaps the most showstopping use of stone is a low, dark granite bar, glittering with mica, which divides the living room and a den with a pull-down movie screen. Nearby, a pool table converts into another surface for setting down a drink by virtue of a beautiful inlaid wood cover. It sits between the dining room, where a custommade table crafted from quartz gleams, and the kitchen. With the four bedrooms safely tucked away at the far reaches of the penthouse, this assemblage of living areas offers one dream space for entertaining. “I’ve had 50-60 people here for parties and it never even approached feeling crowded,” Karlan says. The home’s stunning interiors and triple exposures no doubt make for easy cocktail conversation. îî

“I’ve had 50–60 people here for partIes and It never even approached feelIng crowded.”—ken karlan from top: Bustling Rittenhouse Square is just steps from Parc Rittenhouse and some of Philly’s favorite restaurants for sidewalk seating; the sun-soaked master bath boasts an oversized stone-tiled rain shower, a large air jet soaking tub, and custom wood vanity.
But what’s likely to strike visitors more immediately is the gallery-like array of fine art. Facing the entrance is the largest of them all: a sunny abstract by actress Sela Ward, whom Karlan knows through a mutual friend. (If one squints really hard, it almost bears the form of a Philadelphia soft pretzel.) Other pieces include a photo montage of Center City and a triptych that incorporates a page from each book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, a favorite of Karlan’s. In the living room, about 35 bronze animal figurines by sculptor Loet Vanderveen, enlivened by gold eyes, tusks, and tails, prance and stalk on a circle-shaped étagère. The mini metal menagerie and just about everything else will be relocating to San Diego soon. One thing that Karlan will likely leave behind is the fabulous dining table. “I don’t think it will fit in the elevator of my new building,” he says ruefully. Besides the table, what else will he miss when he sells the penthouse? “More than anything, I’ll miss using Parc downstairs as my go-to restaurant,” he says, laughing. “That, and having Rittenhouse Square as my backyard.” For more information, contact Allan Domb Real Estate; allandomb.com

FUNNY BUSINESS FOR COMEDIAN AND PHILLY RESIDENT WANDA S ES, MOTHERHOOD—AND MEETING PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA—CAUSED LIFE TO COME FULL CIRCLE. BY A.D. AMOROSI
Wanda Sykes is a clever, biting comic actor and stand-up comic known for roles in animated films and television shows such as Ice Age: Collision Course and HBO’s Animals, to say nothing of non-animated, but-no-less adrenalized shows like Black-ish and her upcoming The Dream

Team. But, let’s face it, her signature nasal tone could make Shakespeare sound like a comedy bit. “I think directors want me for that familiar voice of mine,” says Sykes. “But I’m definitely acting, putting a different spin to every character I tackle.” The same will surely be true of
the topics she’ll juggle on stage at the Borgata’s Music Box in Atlantic City, June 10–11. Quiet about where she lives, Sykes, wife Alex Niedbalski, and their fraternal twins, daughter Olivia Lou and son Lucas Claude, split their time between LA and Media. What Sykes isn’t
shy about is her milestone moment, a surprisingly recent one, 2009’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. “There was a lot going on for me at that time,” she says laughing. “That was a huge stage, the world was watching let alone everyone in that room and it was for the first
African-American president. Plus, I had just become a mother before the dinner. My wife and family was with me during the dinner, and it just put me on another level. I became completely sure of who I was and what my mission was. I felt unstoppable.” theborgata.com
