LOST AND FOUND BROTHERLY LOST BLOGGER BEN WONG MINES PHILLY’S FORGOTTEN NEIGHBORHOODS FOR HIS VIBRANT VISUALS.
Temple University-taught cameraman Ben Wong would rather photograph a dilapidated warehouse than Dilworth Park any day. With an audience of over 15k on his Instagram, @BrotherlyLost, Wong’s brand is urban living served straight-up: an abandoned cathedral at

dusk, an unremarkable corner laundromat, a dimly lit SEPTA platform. “I always aim to show that the city has more to offer aesthetically than statues and cobblestone,” he says. Through capturing Philadelphia’s underbelly on his dual blog and Instagram, Wong found
that his weekend passion project, started in 2014, really resonated with city residents. “I tend to wander around the more offbeat neighborhoods, areas more familiar to locals,” says Wong. “I’ve always had a thing for the grittier parts of the city—I definitely have an eye for
the unusual.” Wong says he accumulated several years’ worth of photos while studying film at Temple, during which time many of his travels led him and his camera to North Philly. Lately, Wong is zooming in on other themes, like live music and portraits, but
the city as subject matter remains his wide-angle focus. “I’m attracted to small pockets throughout Philly that contrast nature and urban life,” he says. “Everywhere I go I’m looking at things as if through a lens, even without a camera in hand.” brotherlylost.com

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Think back to the best gift you ever received for the holidays. Mine was the 1979 Barbie Dreamhouse. It was a two-story A-frame with a white Juliet balcony and overflowing flower boxes. Barbie occupied this roomy estate in my finished basement for five years while running a successful McDonald’s franchise next door and moonlighting as an aerobics instructor. How times have changed: The gifts that I dream about under the tree now come in much, much smaller boxes. In this issue’s “Enchanted Romance” feature, the season’s most dramatic gems shine brightly against the lush linings of vintage jewelry boxes. For further gifting inspiration, we count down a long list of major store openings (Rag & Bone! Anthropologie & Co.! Kirna Zabête!) to add to your retail rounds.
I’m especially excited about this issue’s “Insta-Philly” feature, in which we crown five local influencers as the kings and queens of the city’s social media scene. Like their tens of thousands of followers, I’ve been happily scouring their feeds for my daily fix of visual eye candy for years. So have major companies hoping to tap into their influential audiences: More than a few of our ’grammers have scored lucrative partnerships and collaborations from their pastimes-turned-professions. There are other follow-worthy people in this issue, from the Eagles’ Brent Celek and his music protégé Guordan Banks to actress Sarah Megan Thomas. Not to be outdone, the utterly ageless Christie Brinkley graces the cover of our final issue of 2016. The flaxen-haired model, whose latest ventures include
skincare and organic spirits, has found a whole new fanbase through social media, with more than 200k followers charting her every supermodel move—not to mention that famous smile. It’s been another busy year here at Philadelphia Style, now my seventh with the magazine. Since it’s an anniversary associated with such a famously lucky number, I can say that, holidays or not, working here truly is a gift that keeps on giving. I hope you receive your own favorite gift this year. Cheers to 2017!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
Philadelphia Style Men’s Issue cover star Leslie Odom Jr. made a guest appearance for a preview screening of the new Hamilton documentary.
It’s hard to believe we are already distributing our last edition of 2016. By far, this year has been an impactful one for Philadelphia, and it is surely ending on a high note. As 2016 nears its end, I can’t help but look back at what a stellar year it was. The Democratic National Convention was held at the Wells Fargo Center and, once again, all eyes were on Philadelphia. Next year, the NFL Draft will be hosted here, and at the end of January, the Academy Ball will celebrate its 160th year with an evening of music and dining to support the Academy of Music Restoration Fund. Just in time for the holiday shopping season, King of Prussia Mall debuted its gorgeous new expansion, securing its spot as the second-largest mall in America. The corridor features the likes of Jimmy Choo, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Stuart Weitzman,
and more. Just steps away, the King of Prussia Town Center opened and welcomed Davio’s Steakhouse, Nordstrom Rack, and Ulta Beauty. Center City has also seen retail expansion, with the opening of Rag & Bone and Under Armour. In the new year, we look forward to continuing the upward rise of our great city. From real estate developments to store openings, I have no doubt that 2017 will be as great a year as 2016, and I look forward to sharing it with all of you.

GEORGE POLGAR
SARAH JORDAN
George Polgar is a 35-year veteran of the national motor press, reporting weekly on the auto industry and product news on CBS KYW News Radio. When not taking spur-of-the-moment test drive road trips to Maine for lobster and following new car intros around the world, Polgar is an avid sailor, and live music fan. In this issue, he takes a spin in the new Ferrari California T.
Sarah Jordan is a National Magazine Awardnominated writer who lives in Philadelphia. She has written extensively on fashion, style, and the arts for national and regional magazines and news‚papers. She is the author of four books. For this issue of Philadelphia Style, Jordan interviewed up-and-coming shoe designer Alana Oates.
Favorite Philly drive: I love driving the old back roads of the Main Line and around the Brandywine Valley that were probably originally horse and buggy trails. They’re a lot of fun with 400 horses under the hood of a low-slung carbon fiber, aluminum, and glass super car. Favorite part about the Ferrari California T: The Ferrari California is the Gucci loafer of super cars. Looks stylish, well made, and equally comfy for black tie and no-socks activities.
Style cues worth copying from Oates: I loved how Alana is committed to elegance even around the house. Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you should be any less chic. Outfit she would pair with a Llani shoe: Her shoes are versatile. I would wear a pair with a black tuxedo blazer and cigarette pants or my favorite jeans and a white T-shirt. For someone who gravitates to minimalist dressing, I appreciate how her embellished shoes add just the right sparkle to complete an outfit.
BETSY F. PERRY
JOANN GRECO
Over the course of her career, Betsy F. Perry has worked with Michael Bloomberg, Rupert Murdoch, Helen Gurley Brown, and Michael Milken. She started at Harper’s Bazaar, has held senior positions at Cosmopolitan and Premiere, and has been on both sides of the camera as a Fox producer, movie critic, and Star Magazine gossip columnist. She wrote this issue’s Style story on Escada’s 2017 resort collection.
JoAnn Greco writes on fascinating people and ideas in design, architecture, urban planning, and the arts from her home in Bella Vista. A frequent contributor to Philadelphia Style, her articles have appeared everywhere from Art & Antiques to The Washington Post. In this edition, Greco explored the winding staircases and secret gardens of one of Philadelphia’s priciest homes currently on the market.
Behind the story: When you sit home wearing sweats, it’s great fun to think about all the pretty clothes you’re writing about. I especially loved the names of colors— Mimosa yellow and Melrose pink—that the designer came up with. Winter must-have: Gorgeous over-the- knee suede boots. Best gift ever: My mother gave me an Hermès bag when I was younger, and two years ago I had it all polished up and gave it to my daughter. She loved it, too.
Style tip from the story: My favorite part of this story was discovering the property’s hidden garden and loggia at the back of the home. Tips for stylish holiday decorating: Think beyond the usual color combo of red and green and try subtle variations like eggplant and teal with hints of silver, or plum and blueberry with gold accents. Favorite Philly holiday decorations: I’m a sucker for the Macy’s winter wonderland, complete with organ concerts!

TURN UP THE CHEER THROUGH THE NEW YEAR WITH HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. BY CONNIE CAPONE
It’s called the most wonderful time of the year—but it can also be the most stressful. Let these awesome, thoroughly Philly seasonal events and two of the world’s most adored musicals provide a temporary respite.

POPS STARS
The orchestra that serenaded Pope Francis and shared the stage with Andrea Bocelli is gearing up for its holiday performance series. After 40 years, The Philly Pops are just as popular as ever: Their 10-show run at the Kimmel Center kicks off with the soldout opener Christmas Salute on December 2, and plays through December 18. “We have over 300 musicians participating and a stirring presentation of traditional Christmas songs,” says Michael Krajewski, Pops music director. This season, the orchestra will be joined by renowned jazz singer Tony Desare. phillypops.org

FAIRMOUNT FINERY
A tradition dating back 45 years, the historic homes at Fairmount Park offer a stroll through six select addresses, each decked out in seasonal decorations, December 3–17. Over the first two weekends visitors can explore the homes, all which pre-date the American Revolution, and enjoy special food and music events. “We

The Pennsylvania Ballet is closing in on a half-century of performing George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker at the Academy of Music. The famed two-act ballet composed by Peter Tchaikovsky is seen by over 40,000 people each season and, this year, runs December 9–31. “It’s the perfect event to round out a winter day,” says Ángel Corella, artistic director for the Pennsylvania Ballet. Catch a break from the holiday hoopla with two productions known for their classic sing-songy scores: The stage adaptation of The Wizard of Oz runs through January 8 at the Walnut Street Theatre while the farewell tour of Mamma Mia! hits the Merriam December 27– 31. Lizzie Markson, an Allentown native, will play lead character Sophie in Mamma Mia! “Not only do I get to perform this infectiously uplifting show at a beautiful venue,” says Markson, “but also I get to share the experience with my friends and family.” walnutstreettheatre.org; kimmelcenter.org

menus.” The restaurant’s name hints at French food but Senat says it’s more about the definition of the word: Maison is something closer to an intimate, New American-driven house party, albeit one with a “great wine cave, private dining space, and 66 seats,” he says. A September 2015 fire slowed Senat’s roll—the incident prompted him to change architects and designs--but he wasn’t deterred from making his maison in the “vivacious” neighborhood of Midtown Village. Cityscape murals will bleed from outside to inside Maison, with a menu that’s “not crazy fine dining, but you know me—I can’t help myself,” he laughs. “Even something casual becomes something elegant when I get my hands on it.” 208 S. 13th St.; maison208.com

In a city where celebrated chefs can feel like our friends, Sylva Senat stands out. As the opening executive chef at Tashan, he turned its white-linen, modern Indian menu into a fresh-focused mélange of French and Haitianinspired flavors with zeal. So stunning was Senat’s culinary conceptualism, that when he left Tashan in 2013, Philly foodies wondered where he would land and when he would open his own restaurant. “Yes, it took a minute, and not every minute was happy,” says Senat, standing in the bare bones of his debut project, Maison 208, in the former Letto Deli. “I’m a conceptdriven chef and wanted to explore different cuisines, so I consulted, first for Michael Schulson in Ardmore, then Spice 28 and Dos Tacos. NEW FRONTIER
If you think that the only way to experience the gunslinging glory of the Wild West is dressed in a cowboy hat in one of those oldtimey photo studios on the boardwalk, think again. Cirque Éloize—a high-flying Canadian circus troupe that’s not to be confused with that other Cirque— saddles up to the American frontier for its latest show, Saloon, at the Merriam Theater, January 13 and 14. Troupe acrobat Shena Tschofen says that Saloon is the first of Éloize’s roughly 10 original productions to feature a more in-depth character plot beyond the theatrical choreography and over-the-top aerial acts. “This is the first time we are venturing into such a specific environment,” she shares. “We were deeply inspired by the world of the Wild West, and the elements it provided to create this production.” Also new for the company, Tschofen says, is the live musical element. “We have included music as a huge part of the show,” she says. “There are three live musicians and we are all on stage at the same time.” Saloon’s folksy, fast-paced score is hugely personal for Tschofen, who was trained in classical violin and traditional fiddle. “It is a huge coincidence to have found a show that integrates both my music and circus background.” Yeehaw! 250 S. MONEY HONEY ON THE HEELS OF HER NEWEST FILM, MAIN LINE NATIVE SARAH MEGAN THOMAS TUNES INTO A NEW TV PROJECT. BY KRISTIN DETTERLINE
What inspired the storyline for your recent financial thriller Equity, which you also produced and star in? rather than trading. You filmed some of the movie here in Philadelphia, right? Ballard Spahr and the Pyramid Club opened their doors. A friend of mine donated their Rittenhouse apartment which is the home of Naomi, our lead character. How will the story evolve for the upcoming TV adaptation? It’s really easy to get material
for TV—half of Equity was on the cutting-room floor because we had so much footage. During editing, we essentially had two films: a thriller and a drama. The TV version allows us to explore the personal lives of our three female stars. You live in New York, but get back to Philly often. Where would we find you on a Saturday? I love Vedge. I’m not
vegan but the food is fantastic. The BYOB scene here is amazing. I like to run along Boathouse Row, too. What’s next for you? I’m in the early stages of developing a story around a familiar historical woman. My ultimate goal is to put complex female characters on screen— even messy characters. That’s what’s real. sarahmeganthomas.com

SWEEPS OF COLOR AMERICAN ART HAS A SERIOUS MOMENT AT TWO NEW EXHIBITIONS.
Philadelphia museum visitors are in for some deep reflection this winter with two new exhibits at PAFA and Brandywine River Museum. Some 160 works in “World War I and American Art,” running through April 2017 at PAFA (118–128 N. Broad St., 215-9727600; pafa.org), weave the war’s narrative through eight themes, from Prelude: The Threat of War to Celebration and Mourning. A key inclusion in the Battlefields theme is John Singer Sargent’s haunting 1918 masterpiece Gassed, on loan from London’s Imperial War Museum. “Sargent’s painting will be the centerpiece of the exhibition and one of the highlights of the American national centenary recognition of this chapter in world history,” says David R. Brigham, PAFA president and acting director. On view at the Brandywine (1 Hoffman’s Mill Road, Chadds Ford, 610-388-2700; brandywine. org) through January 22 is “Rural Modern: American Art Beyond the City.” The exhibit spotlights 60 pieces from artists including Pennsylvanian Charles Demuth and Georgia O’Keeffe that channel the architecture, landscapes, and people of rural America—including depictions of economic and environmental strife—from the period between World Wars I and II when the Modernist movement was sweeping the country.

This past autumn, Lacroix moved to a single five-course tasting menu for $105, as well as a stunning caviar service. Whether you’re in the mood for something as deceptively simple as domestic caviar paired with potato rosti and smoked salmon, or 30 decadent grams of Royal Imperial caviar with traditional garnishes, this new offering “elevates our guests’ dining experiences to unprecedented heights,” says Executive Chef Jonathan Cichon. University City BYOB Marigold has, over the years, been home to some of the top chefs in the city. This is undoubtedly the case yet again thanks to chefs Andrew Kochan, Tim Lanza, and Keith Krajewski, who are turning out 10-course, $90 tasting menus of electric originality. “We love to play with colloquialisms and how people’s expectations alter the way that they approach a dish,” says Kochan, who says the phrase “spill the beans” inspired a haute riff on canned beans. “We have used pumpkin in the style of sushi and as faux foie gras.” 501 S. 45th St., 215222-3699; marigoldkitchenbyob.com THAT’S AMORE

“PHILLY IS LIKE A BIG, CHAOTIC URBAN FOREST. I LOVE HOW INSPIRED I FEEL.” —AUBRIE Aubrie Costello’s word-centric works of art are mined from years’ worth of journals filled with snippets of song lyrics, text messages, and conversations. CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Billie Holiday’s “Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good To You,” was the inspiration for a work along South Street; a commissioned installation for an outdoor wedding, with a quote from one of the couple’s favorite poems; Passmeby, a piece from Costello’s ongoing series “The Unravel,” has popped up in Northern Liberties, the Wissahickon, and the Rail Park.

COSTELLO
Aubrie Costello is not your typical graffiti artist. Instead of tagging alleys and highway underpasses with spray paint, you can find the Moore College of Art & Design graduate weaving silken scribbles on brick walls, fences, and trees throughout the city. “My true love affair with art began when I was studying the art I found in the streets,” says Costello. “Philly is like a big, chaotic urban forest. I love how inspired I feel.” When she is not knee-deep in shoes at Bus Stop Boutique, where she is creative director and assistant buyer, Costello is working on “The Unravel,” an evolving series where pieces are left outside to be turned into a beautiful mess by the elements. “Nature is an essential medium to the project. It’s an exercise in letting go and letting things unfold.” Her most recognizable pieces of late, on South Street near the Royal Theater, read, “Baby ain’t I good to U” and “Baby, I’m doing this 4 us.” The method to her Mad Libs-like madness is simple. “I look at the place, then refer back to my words and pick something that just feels right,” says Costello. She’s currently developing a clothing line and a short film in addition to scouting new locations in Philly, but yearns to spin yarns across the continents. Says Costello: “My dream is to take my work to the streets of Japan and Thailand.” aubriecostello.com

What’s it like working together? GB: Brent’s very hands-on. He even spent long nights in the studio while I worked. BC: Guordan and I think alike and that’s key to a solid partnership. You grew up in Philly, Guordan? GB: I get my grit from Philly. I was raised in the heart of North Philly with eight siblings. My mother was a minister so we spent a lot of time at church; my musical background is rooted in gospel. Brent, how do you juggle football, two restaurants (Bop, Prime Stache, and music? BC: Football is my main thing. But instead of wasting my free time, I have chosen the route of entrepreneurship. It hasn’t been easy but the lessons I’ve learned are priceless. Sum up the new album, Unpopular, in a few words. GB: Love, hope, freedom, and unconditional soul.

SPECIAL DELIVERIES PHILLY’S HOTTEST LIFESTYLE LIFESAVERS ARE JUST A QUICK CLICK AWAY. BY CONNIE CAPONE
What if the farthest you had to travel to buy produce or pick up dry cleaning was across your living room to the front door? Thanks to these hot Philly-based start-ups, you can scratch at least three items off your never-ending to-do list and think about that other endless list: your New Year’s resolutions. HOMEGROWN DELIVERY Local farms provide the seasonal goods for subscription grocery service Door to Door Organics.
Bucks County native David Gersenson partnered with local farmers and artisans like Lancaster Farms Fresh Co-op and Blue Moon Acres for USDA-certified organic, farm-raised produce to supply his Door to Door Organics, a subscription grocery service. “Everything we do is rooted in helping our customers make healthier food choices,” says Chad Arnold, CEO. doortodoororganics.com

UNDER THE SURFACE ESCADA FOLDS FOUR DECADES OF HERITAGE INTO A MODERN RESORT COLLECTION THAT SHIMMERS IN SHADES OF WATER, SUN, AND SAND.

BY BETSY F. PERRY
While many fashion houses change direction with each new in-house designer, Escada is approaching the grand age of forty without losing sight of what makes it special in the eyes of its faithful followers, while simultaneously offering “classic cool” to seduce younger fans. “In fashion, reaching 40 years is a great accomplishment,” says Escada’s fashion director, Daniel Wingate, of the label’s coming milestone. “It’s an honor that so many women still love the brand and turn to Escada to make them feel beautiful.” With that in mind, Escada has created a bright, vivacious resort collection laced with modern elements, but which, Wingate adds, translates the brand’s heritage for today. Wingate turned to David Hockney’s celebrated pool paintings—those modernist emblems of 1960s California cool—for his initial inspiration. Describing the collection as a “wink to the bygone era of famous swans like Babe Paley and Jackie Kennedy and the glamorous days of Hollywood,” he embraced super-fresh colors with names like Melrose pink and Mimosa yellow, along with shades of blue (a particular obsession in Hockney’s aquatic series). Key pieces include
Moments in the sun (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT): For its 2017 resort collection, Escada modeled a yellow frock after Kim Basinger’s 1998 Oscar dress; the collection also includes coats and gowns in iridescent fabrics as well as metallic slides and kitten heels.

“IT’S AN HONOR THAT SO MANY WOMEN TURN TO ESCADA TO MAKE THEM FEEL BEAUTIFUL.” —daniel wingate
pencil-striped coats with matching dresses and cigarette pants worn with fortune cookie-shaped tops tied at the waist with karate-style belts. Wingate’s other inspiration, of course, is the “Escadettes”—the designer’s name for his loyal clients— who look to the brand to expand their wardrobes as they prepare to winter in toasty, sun-filled resorts. “They’re adding some wonderfully feminine but simple shapes in vivid, fresh colors, the head-to-toe tonal ones and the white and black grouping, along with the striped pieces that bring in all colors of the collection,” he says. “It’s also time to be more playful with your clothes.” To that end, he encourages his clientele to try a jumpsuit, belt the waist over a coat, and even experiment with a top worn back to front. The collection, which makes stylish dressing practically foolproof, also borrows from the past—specifically, the custom-made mint cowl-neck gown that Kim Basinger wore when she won the Oscar for best supporting actress for L.A. Confidential in 1998. Wingate has adopted the flattering neckline for a Mimosa yellow dress as well as for hip-length, waist-skimming tops with deep backs that can be worn with conservative white slacks or chic ankle-length pencil pants. And peeking out from both pants and dresses are metallic slides in silver, gold, or bronze that Wingate calls “Frank Gehry buildings for the foot.” Although accessories are minimal, Escada has introduced its chic new ML40 handbag—available in eyepopping colors—to commemorate the company’s upcoming 40th birthday and recognize Escada’s founder, Margaretha Ley. While the 2017 resort collection has pieces reminiscent of a more unhurried age, when women seemed to have all the time in the world to get themselves together, it’s still as modern and polished as the woman who wears it today—one who needs to keep it stylish but without overthinking her wardrobe. For Wingate, it amounts to a simple design credo: “Be relevant.” Saks Fifth Avenue, 2 Bala Plaza, Bala Cynwyd, 610-667-1550; saks.com

TEE TIME! BY LISA FERRANDINO
Anthony Melillo always knew that he wanted to pursue a career in fashion. Early on, that meant extra pocket money for a new shirt. “I really loved working and had a job since I was 16,” he says. “I just wanted to buy clothes and walk around South Street.” His sartorial obsession would eventually take him away from his hometown of West Chester to New York City, where he landed a job as Esquire’s style director and, later, built ATM, one of fashion’s most coveted brands of tees and wardrobe essentials. “My goal was to create a brand that was real yet cool,” he says. “It’s what we do best. Real clothing with just the right amount of edge.” His collections boast not only the perfect T-shirt—which is “all about the right fit, fabric, and drape”—but luxe basics like henleys, sweaters,

and pants for men and women. “The perfect basics are what is most sought after, yet the hardest to find,” he says. “We update our offerings and add new designs while still creating wardrobe staples.” Chic offerings ranging from women’s cashmere cardigans to leather blazers and a wool wrap coat are Melillo’s top picks for Philly winters, while gents should opt for the cashmere Donegal sweaters. And while Melillo may reside in New York for now, he dreams of bringing ATM to suburban storefronts like his native West Chester. “Growing up, I saw people dressing for quality, and that’s what ATM stands for: clean, modern clothing that’s wearable and versatile for everyone’s wardrobe.” Neiman Marcus, King of Prussia Mall, 610-962-6200; atmcollection.com

Top trends: Floral brocade and lace anything. “Lace has really blossomed the last two years.” Color theories: Dark hues are always in style for one very important reason, says Schwartz. “Black or navy makes everyone feel good because it’s slimming.” But “fashion rebels” can look to a rainbow of reds to stand out this winter. “Think lipstick red and Valentino red; red is always big for the holidays. Philly women love color when they dress up. I also sell a lot of blue every season.” Labels he’s loving: Number 21, Catherine Regehr, Wayne Clark, Frascara, and Blumarine, one of Sophy Curson’s best-known brands and a long-time favorite of Schwartz’s for their knitwear. “Anna Molinari, Blumarine’s designer, keeps things feminine but modern. We always think of florals for spring but this season’s designs really work for winter because the print is dark.” What makes Philadelphia shoppers tick: “They don’t follow the trends like New Yorkers do. They prefer to invest in key pieces, like handbags, and get their use out of them. Philly women know who they are and what they like.” 19th and Sansom Streets, 215567-4662; sophycurson.com

SAVING FACE A GROUNDBREAKING NEW TREATMENT MAKES THE DREADED DOUBLE CHIN A THING OF THE PAST.
A recent survey by the American Society for Dermatological Surgery revealed that nearly 67 percent of us are as bothered by double chins as we are by lines and wrinkles around the eyes. But while there are several options for smoothing out the crinkles, a quick fix for a shimmying chin has always proved elusive—until now. Beauty-minded pharma company Kythera Biopharmaceuticals has debuted Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for that under-the-chin wobble—or, in medical terms, submental fat. Utilizing precise injections of deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells, Kybella, which enjoyed phenomenal success during clinical trials, has emerged as something of a miracle fix—for the appropriate patients, of course. “In the age of the selfie, where looking good from all angles has achieved heightened importance, the jawline, chin, and neck have garnered much attention in the cosmetic world,” says Dr. Louis P. Bucky, a Philadelphiabased cosmetic surgeon. “For the dreaded double chin, Kybella offers a nonsurgical treatment option. The best patients for this procedure have central fat just under the chin, with good skin elasticity to avoid hanging skin afterwards. We’ve seen men, in particular, excited by Kybella, which helps define a stronger jawline for them that often can’t be fixed with diet and exercise because it is genetically predisposed.” Whatever it takes to unearth your true face… Treatment programs start at $1,750. officially rings in the holiday season,” says Amy Kule, executive producer and parade official. The parade reaches 50 million viewers with its nationally televised NBC broadcast, and 3.5 million line the streets in New York to witness it live. As part of this year’s milestone, Rizzoli has introduced the coffee-table book Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: A New York City Holiday Tradition, which captures
the history and scope of the spectacle and features a foreword by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and afterword by Macy’s Chairman and CEO Terry J. Lundgren. “The parade’s halo effect becomes a tangible reality for shoppers at their local Macy’s store and macys.com,” says Lundgren. “They expect the parade’s perfectly choreographed execution to translate into a seamless shopping experience.”
Across the country, in-store celebratory events and products will be unveiled—and a new app even allows users to create their own Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “This is a milestone for Macy’s, but I think it’s a milestone for every fan we have across the country,” says Kule. “This is not a New York parade; this is America’s parade.” 1300 Market St., 215-241-9000; macys.com

Victoria Beckham fans rejoiced when the fashion designer announced her first makeup collection in collaboration with Estée Lauder (Saks Fifth Avenue, 2 Bala Plaza, Bala Cynwyd, 610667-1550; saks.com). The limited-edition line pays homage to Beckham’s favorite cities—London, LA, New York, and Paris—with curated looks that include a matte bronzer, an emeraldhued eye shadow, and a “perfect nude” lipstick. Makeup looks from the runway are sometimes too dramatic for the street— with the notable exception of Armani’s Fall/Winter

Grape expectations: Environmentalist and longtime vegetarian Christie Brinkley has jumped into the spirits game with a new brand of organic, all-natural prosecco called Bellissima. “Natural is a really big buzz word in the wine industry right now, she says.
ON THE
BRINK With her beauty business booming and a new brand of bubbly hitting Philly for the holidays, actress, activist, and supermodel Christie Brinkley is trying on a new role for size: superhero.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIAN ANDREA DI STEFANO
by Kristin Detterline
America has been talking about Christie Brinkley for more than 40 years. She has appeared on over 500 magazine covers, including Sports Illustrated for a record three years in a row. She worked with CoverGirl cosmetics for 25 years, another model milestone. There was her scene-stealing acting debut in National Lampoon’s Vacation in 1983. Google the classic movie clip and you can’t help but marvel that Brinkley, now 62 and a mother of three, is just as gorgeous as ever: same blonde mane, same lithe figure, same unmistakably sunny smile. After four decades in the spotlight, the real secret of her success may lie in Brinkley’s ability to keep that conversation going. There have always been TV and stage appearances, including a critically acclaimed Broadway run as Roxie Hart in Chicago in 2010, but the last few years have put Brinkley squarely back in the spotlight as a model for denim brand NYDJ and two beauty launches that bear her name: the Hair2Wear Christie Brinkley Collection of clip-in extensions and Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare. In between, she penned Timeless Beauty: Over 100 Tips, Secrets, and Shortcuts to Looking Great. The beauty and wellness guide debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list last fall and remained there for 11 weeks. Brinkley says aligning with projects that she genuinely believes in has been at least one of the keys to her career-longevity. “I like to think of campaigns as public service announcements, great products that are going to enhance your life in a positive way. That’s really why I’ve been able to stick around.” Consider Brinkley’s latest move into spirits with a new line of organic prosecco called, fittingly, Bellissima. The Italian sparkler launched in New York this summer, where it was the season’s sip of choice around Brinkley’s Long Island hometown, and just hit Philadelphia state stores in time for the holidays. “Bubbly wines are the

exclamation point on a beautiful moment. Think about it: When do you pop a cork? When your friends stop by or when someone has a baby or gets engaged or even gets divorced,” she explains. She’s always been a fan of sparkling wines, but Brinkley says the brand’s commitment to being 100 percent organic is what most appealed to her. “I talk a lot in interviews and on Instagram about going organic because it’s good for our bodies and good for the environment. I’m always posting pictures of my garden. You don’t need chemicals to have beautiful flowers or vegetables.” Brinkley threw herself into the project, clipping grapes in Italy, sourcing organic ink and packaging, and designing the label inspired by Botticelli’s Venus (“the lettering is similar to the credits for Fellini’s La Strada,” she says). That same tenacity went into her skincare brand, which adds five new antiaging potions to the collection next year. “This was when I discovered how finicky I am when it comes to putting my name on something,” she says. “We spent two years working on this one cream, but it still wasn’t exactly what I wanted; I knew it could be better. I fought for my decision because I didn’t want my name on anything less than perfect.” Brinkley’s growing business empire nearly overshadows what really drives her: philanthropy. Last year, she traveled to South Africa and Kenya to support the First Lady of Kenya in her efforts to fight elephant and rhinoceros poaching. She has spoken out against nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants in front of the United Nations and the US Senate on behalf of the Global Security Institute and Radiation and Public Health Project, where she sits on the board of directors. For the holidays, Brinkley will skip her annual family trip to the Caribbean and celebrate across the globe with Smile Train, an organization that fixes cleft palates. “Smile Train literally saves lives,” says Brinkley. “In some cultures, babies are shunned or even discarded for this deformity. If you fix the baby’s face, you can change their life.” It’s no surprise, then, that charity is Brinkley’s link to Philadelphia. A few

years ago, she wanted to adopt a dog for her youngest daughter and rising model Sailor Lee (Brinkley also has a son, Jack Paris, and Alexa Ray, her eldest daughter with Billy Joel) for Christmas. So she turned to good friend, journalist, and animal activist Jill Rappaport to track down a puppy. That’s when Brinkley connected with Main Line Animal Rescue for the tiny white Maltipoo that she named Chester, after Chester County where MLAR is based. Brinkley and Chester currently star in three billboards along the PA Turnpike promoting animal adoption. “One of the things that makes Christie so beautiful is her willingness to help animals at risk, whether it’s opening her home to one little puppy-mill dog or urging millions to adopt shelter pets as part of our latest billboard campaign,” says MLAR founder Bill Smith. In 2004, the supermodel spent time traveling around the suburbs with thenGovernor Ed Rendell as part of the Moms for Kerry initiative. “We went all over Pennsylvania on the campaign bus to talk about saving the environment—or what’s left of it—and how environmental health affects children’s health,” says Brinkley, who also joined the 2000 and 2012 tours. “People just loved her wherever we went,” says Rendell, recalling a moment during the 2012 election when Brinkley was talking with a voter at a shopping center in Ardmore. “An Obama supporter said that she was voting for him but that her husband likely wasn’t. Christie offered to go to their home so she could speak with her husband directly [about the election]. She was an enthusiastic campaigner, to say the least.” It’s this motivation to make the world a little better in as many ways as possible— whether traveling across the globe to save endangered wildlife or touting her secrets to the fountain of youth—that keeps Brinkley awake at night. That, along with some wise words that her mother shared early on in her career: “My mom always said to try and lead a life that makes anyone you meet feel happy to have met you.” Consider us all very happy, then. P H I L LY ! Hit the “like” button for Philly’s new generation of social media stars. BY CONNIE CAPONE
IT’S SAID THAT a picture is worth a thousand words. If you’re one of Philly’s snap-savvy social media stars, then your pictures are worth thousands of followers and even more in earnings. With little more than good lighting and a few favorite filters, these five Philadelphians have us compulsively scrolling through their feeds for photos of fashion, food, scenery, dogs, and the occasional selfie. What’s more, they have made the city they call home their background, from evening sunsets along Delaware Avenue to a tabletop coffee snap from their favorite cafe. Philadelphia Style heard from some of those insta-famous stars of the city, and talked about these passion projects that have turned into full-time professions better known as #bestjobever.

DALLAS SHAW | ILLUSTRATOR @dallasshaw
Dallas Shaw, whose leggy sketches have strutted into the style orbits of clients like Chanel, Ralph Lauren, and La Prairie, began her water-colored career as an artist for Disney. Now a luxury project designer specializing in visual consulting and digital marketing, her work has sent her around the globe (hello, Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show!) and put her front and center with fashion’s biggest names. But it’s Shaw’s feminine, fanciful snaps of flowers, food, and travel coupled with a loyal fan base--she has more than 70,000 Instagram followers--that have turned her into a tastemaker in her own right. Shaw’s secret to success? “Not talent but persistence.” Tipping point: “I signed on for a creative project with DKNY years ago that turned out to be one of the largest social media projects of its time.” Fangirl moment: “I was at Gwen Stefani’s show in New York and met with her afterward. After a candid talk about some mutual friends and Fashion Week adventures she grabbed my phone and took selfies of us.” If I only had 20 minutes in Philly...: “I’d sneak off to Assembly Rooftop Lounge for Champagne and an epic view of the city.” Insta insights: “Keep your feed consistent in content and color while maintaining your own genuine voice. Followers will come.” What’s next: “I have a book coming out in March! It’s called The Way She Wears It and is a visual guide to finding your own personal style. Coming up is a press tour for the book, some team-ups with Vera Bradley, and design collaborations with Dawes Design, Elisa Solomon, and Lulu Frost.” For more of Dallas Shaw’s city favorites, visit phillystylemag.com.

“I’m passionate about food—how it’s grown, how it’s produced, how it’s plated, and consumed,” says Neal Santos of his Instagram, a visual feast for the eyes that is peppered with sullen still shots and the occasional cluster of dogs. The Temple grad is a veteran of the city photography scene, having shot photo and video for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News, and now retired publication the City Paper. With a Budweiser partnership under his belt, Santos says he has a few more sponsorships lined up that include traveling a bit farther than his Center City studio, Rock Paper Scissors. Inspo: “Good light, small moments with big impact, and finding balance between good composition and context.” Pluses and minuses: “The toughest part is working in dynamic environments like a restaurant, where you don’t want to be in anyone’s way and obstruct their business, but knowing that beautiful photography will always help your clients.” Staging the perfect shot: “Find good light from a window and make sure all other sources of light are turned off as well so you don’t mix warm and cool light.” Follower feedback: “Tends to gravitate toward expressions and emojis around love, as in ‘I LOVE this’ with a heart emoji.” Creative circles: “I find the artistic energy surrounding neighborhoods like Fishtown and Spring Arts District to be very inspiring. I love that my city can support and sustain creative work and businesses.” Snap-worthy spots: “Reading Terminal Market, the Italian Market, restaurants with great light and food like High Street on Market, Hungry Pigeon, and Vernick.” For more of Neal Santos’s city favorites, visit phillystylemag.com.

EMMA FRIED-CASSORLA | BLOGGER @phillylovenotes and @phillyescapes
Neuroscientist-turned-blogger Emma Fried-Cassorla suffered from a chronic case of wanderlust throughout college: The Germantown native bounced all over the US, with extended jaunts in Montana and Arizona, before finally returning to attend UPenn. Now, instead of traveling across the country, she explores every corner of the 215 through Philly Love Notes. A visual quilt of vivid city sights, Philly Love Notes “became a project dedicated to reminding Philly residents that there is too much in the city that is forgotten or overlooked.” The original blog that accompanied Philly Love Notes’ 2012 start has since evolved into a custom woodcut and stained-glass map shop with a Philly-centric spin and given way to Philly Escapes, a picturesque punch list of stops within three hours of the city for daytrippers and staycationers. Inspo: “Beauty in unexpected places.” Pluses and minuses: “The best part is that I usually try to be outside to watch the sunsets and sunrises. But it requires a ton of time staring at a screen. I also spend way too much time thinking

about what I’m going to post.” #WhyILovePhilly: “It’s gritty, and beautiful, and not overly pretentious (yet).” Insta insights: “Straight horizon lines please! I only use contrast, structure, and brightness on the native IG app.” Memorable snaps: “There was an epic storm last summer that I got a before, during, and after over the skyline. It made for an amazing triptych. Sick sites: “I used to work at the Delaware River Waterfront, so everything there was an inspiration. Outside of that, places that are beautiful and less populated like Fairmount Park.” After-work cocktails: “Charlie Was a Sinner knows how to makes vegetables combined with liquor heavenly.” Snap-worthy spots: “City Hall, The Rail Park, the blue glazed stones in Old City, the Ben Franklin Bridge.” For more of Emma Fried-Cassorla’s city favorites, visit phillystylemag.com.

Snap-worthy spots: “Shooting anywhere on Second Street in Old City is a blogger’s dream. There’s a black and white mural on the side of Moore College of Art and Design that’s an outstanding piece of work to snap.” City speed dial: “Commonwealth Proper and Royal Tailors are my go-to for alterations. There’s no better shoe shine than at Tobox shoes and they even fix a poor patina for you, too (plus, give a stiff whiskey while you wait). One of my favorite spots for hair is The Duke Barber Co. in Northern Liberties. Sharp cuts, great convo, and amazing atmosphere.” Must-have menswear: “P’s & Q’s, Lapstone & Hammer, Suitsupply.” Pluses and minuses: “Finding time is the hardest part of the job. I’m a new dad, husband, and business owner. There are times when I’m in my office working on content and editing, but the next day I might have to fly overseas to cover London Fashion Week Men’s.” Follower feedback: “Three fire emojis.” For more of Sabir M. Peele’s city favorites, visit phillystylemag.com. SABIR M. PEELE | BLOGGER @mensstylepro
It didn’t take long—two months, to be exact—for Sabir M. Peele to consider a new career path after he was named one of Esquire’s Five Best Dressed Men in America in 2010. That’s when he launched the fashion-forward lifestyle blog, Men’s Style Pro, a sartorial mashup of crisp suiting, classic footwear, and men’s accessories with Peele modeling along Philly’s most familiar sidewalks. It was then that Johnston & Murphy, Awl & Sundry, and Knot Standard came calling for collaborations. The latest one, a footwear collection with Miami-based Caballero Wear, named after his newborn son Hendrix, caps off another busy year for the trendsetter. Peele’s approach is simple: “My passion is that I like to create and help guys look good in the process,” he says.

Starting with their first gig at the Schuylkill County Fair in 1997, Grammy-winning rock ’n’ roll troupe Halestorm has toured with Evanescence, Shinedown, and Three Days Grace. Vocalist and guitarist Elizabeth “Lzzy” (that’s right--no vowels in her name) Hale founded Halestorm with her brother, Arejay. “We’ve always had the same goal, which is just to figure out a way to do music for the rest of our lives,” says Hale, whose rock chick vibes manifest in edgy performance candids and lifeon-the-road moments on her Instagram account, which clocks some 230,000 followers.
Inspo: “People, conversations, internal struggles, success, mustaches.” Memorable moment: “Winning a Grammy in 2012. It was an out-of-body experience and a personal milestone for me and my band.” Follower feedback: “I get a lot of little girls tell me how inspiring it is to see a girl on stage in rock music. I’m truly humbled by this.” Sick sites: “South Street. I have so many memories playing the bars up and down that area.” Insta insights: “I use my social media like I would a mass instant message. It’s a way to stay personally connected. I get off on letting people into my world.” If I only had 20 minutes in Philly…: “I’d go to Wawa for either coffee with Irish cream half and half or a liverwurst sandwich with mustard.” Favorite place to catch a concert: “The Electric Factory.” What’s next: “Writing and touring. We start the year off in New Zealand and Australia, we’ll be releasing our third cover EP, then we write and record our fourth album on Atlantic Records.” For more of Lzzy Hale’s city favorites, visit phillystylemag.com.

INTO THE WOODS FOUNTAINS, FLORALS, AND HOLIDAY FINERY LIGHT UP THE NIGHT AT LONGWOOD GARDENS.

Heading to Longwood Gardens for its long-running Longwood Christmas celebration is the Main Line’s equivalent of taking in the Macy’s Christmas Light Show in Center City: It’s a rite of passage that renders any holiday season incomplete without a visit. And it’s for good reason. Housed in what used to be Pierre duPont’s gloriously behemoth estate in the bucolic rolling hills of the Brandywine Valley, the four-acre grounds are a holiday reveller’s paradise. With over 500,000 outdoor lights adorning 124 trees, an illuminated Italian Water Garden, dancing fountains (to the beat of holiday tunes, of course), an outdoor train display, a 62-bell carillon that plays music every 30 minutes, and Christmas classics performed on Longwood’s grand 10,010-pipe organ, there’s something for just about everyone. “Our display celebrates the sounds of the season, and we have really had a lot of fun bringing that theme to life,” says Jim Sutton, Longwood’s display designer. One of this year’s high notes (literally) is a one-night performance by Grammy Awardwinning vocalist group The Swingles. With more than 50 recordings and appearances on soundtracks for films and TV shows such as Sex and the City and Glee, these seven vocal powerhouses are set to get their fans in a decidedly holiday state of mind on December 1 at 8 PM for the ultimate seasonal sing-along. longwoodgardens.org

In 1957, Longwood Gardens opened its Christmas celebration to the public for the first time. Today, more than 300,000 guests visit every holiday season.

With the holiday season come mad dashes to the King of Prussia Mall or in-and-out-ofthe-car cruises up Lancaster Avenue to pick up presents, grab a bite to eat, or sweat it out at a spin class. But if you want to simplify—and not sacrifice— head over to the newly opened Bryn Mawr Village (915 and 925 W. Lancaster Ave.). “When you go to the mall, you go to the mall, and we’re not trying to take that away from anyone,” says Paul Aschkenasy, president of Blank Aschkenasy Properties, the real estate development firm behind Bryn Mawr Village. “But what we have here is a totally different product. The idea is to be warm, welcoming, and have retailers and restaurants that are either best-in-class or different than anything else you can find on the Main Line,” he says. Here, the names to know at the suburbs’ swank new openair lifestyle address.

Jasper’s Backyard head chef Scott Simmers has a thing for cooking for A-listers. And we’re not talking about reality stars that grace the covers of weekly gossip magazines. We’re talking about the first-name-only celebrities who are so famous they float below the radar. During Simmers’ final
138 PHILLYSTYLEMAG.COM
interview for a chef position, Casamigos Tequila co-owner Mike Meldman had Simmers whip up the meal of his life for George Clooney and Cindy Crawford. He got two well-manicured thumbs up and the gig was his. He also cooked breakfast for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
on the very day they announced their divorce. But you don’t have to be a celebrity—or even a Philebrity—to sample some of Simmers’ culinary visions. You just have to make your way over to a remote side street in Conshohocken where you’ll find Jasper’s Backyard, one of the
suburb’s most buzzworthy new restaurants. Housed in a huge converted 1800s building, Jasper’s is a study in rustic chic. With massive two-story ceilings, two working fireplaces, outdoor seating for 80, and a hallway lined with thousands of hand-hammered pennies, the restaurant is a modern
homage to its historical roots, right down to the name: Jasper Farmer owned the land Conshohocken sits on in the 1600s. While the design is rooted in the past, the menu is focused very much on the present. “We serve conscious New American food,” says Simmers of his lunch

MAIN LINE STYLE DINING “MY STYLE’S REALLY A COMBINATION OF THE DESERT AND THE OCEAN.” —scott simmers and dinner line up. “We try to keep our food clean and simple, and make deliberate choices at every turn.” Originally hailing from Ambler, Simmers has cooked in kitchens across the globe, including stints in Las Vegas, Arizona, Hawaii, and the Bahamas, before returning to his hometown a few years ago. And his jet-setting locales have majorly influenced his cooking. “When I moved to Arizona, I fell in love with all the spices, chiles, and mesquite-rubbed meats. In Hawaii, I fell in love with the fresh fish and Asian influences. My style’s really a combination of the desert and the ocean. But more than anything, I believe in letting the flavors pop through.” “We wanted to stick with the New American, but with our twist,” says Kelly Sloan, co-owner and restaurant vet, about the cuisine. “We wanted it to be a place where if you had five people with different culinary tastes, they could all find something here.” There’s enough meat and deep rich sauces to satiate the most voracious carnivore—but it’s not all for hearty eaters. “Scott and I are both really into health and fitness [Sloan’s a former fitness instructor and Scott is, well, jacked], and it was important to both of us to also have enough wellconceived options on the menu for anyone who’s health conscious,” says Sloane. Even
the seasonal cocktails use fresh herbs, freshly squeezed citrus juices, and muddled fruits. A few standouts have become customer faves since Jasper’s opened in June. Start off with the sticky sweet chile garlic wings or the sweet lump crabmeat with avocado and mango, topped with a wasabi vinaigrette. Or munch on crispy Conshy sweet potato fries topped with mounds of crab and a mornay sauce. “I mean, come on, it’s a no brainer!” laughs Simmers. “Why doesn’t anyone else put crab meat on their crab fries?” For some down and dirty hand-held bites, try the cast iron-grilled mahi mahi taco with lime crema and slaw or the succulent pulled pork sandwich with a mangoinfused barbecue sauce. And for the entrees, meat-lovers swear by the short ribs, which are braised overnight in a red wine reduction with fresh herbs (grown in the second-floor garden, natch), and served with truffle mashed potatoes. Or try the filet topped with a sublime shitake sauce. If you’re more into the sea, the Kalbi-marinated tuna served with a lemon-lime butter is a winner. The new year will bring live music and a few menu additions to the mix but, in the meantime, this “backyard” is always open. 101 E. Seventh Ave., Conshohocken, 610-8978212; jaspersbackyard.com.

DIVE IN! SUBURBAN SUSHI STALWART BLUEFIN MAKES WAVES WITH BALA’S NEW B2. BY MARNI PRICHARD MANKO
For the Main Line ladieswho-lunch set, a culinary jaunt too far off Lancaster Avenue—in any direction —is nearly taboo. But for the past 16 years, Yong Kim has defied the culinary gods and lured boundary-abiding Main Liners to his Plymouth Meeting BYOB Bluefin for spicy rock sundae and salmon/tuna hybrid Davitch roll—both of which are long-standing customer faves. “I’m the owner and the chef, so I really try to take care of my customers,” say Kim when asked about his cultish following. “I think that’s the key, but high-quality ingredients definitely help make it great sushi.” Now Bluefin loyalists can choose between the original
location and B2, Kim’s latest outpost set to open in early winter. Housed in the old Chops location in Bala Cynwyd, diners will find a similar menu full of sushi rolls and sashimi, with more emphasis on oysters, clams, and other cold-water platters. But this location’s going to take things one step further on the libation front. B2 cocktail plans include a sweet happy hour (can you say half-price sushi?), plus a full-service 22-person bar that pours five types of craft beers, a dozen sake varieties, and an assortment of white wines. With two locations to tend to in 2017, it looks like Kim is on quite a roll. 401 E. City Ave., 215-271-5520; restaurantbluefin.com

WITH ITS ICONIC VINTAGE MONOGRAMMED TRUNKS IN TOW, LOUIS VUITTON SETTLES INTO A DESIGNMINDED NEW BOUTIQUE.
One doesn’t just “put away” their Louis Vuitton items. They carefully display, arrange, even exhibit their designer treasures somewhere conspicuous for random acts of admiration. At the new Louis Vuitton, a corner boutique splashed in subtle shades of gold, right down to the exterior flower pattern panels, in the new wing of the King of Prussia Mall, the interior design question at hand was not where to place the entirety of the maison—men’s and women’s leather goods, shoes, accessories, fine jewelry—but how. In the Travel Room, Philadelphia jetsetters can gawk at vintage trunks and the rainbow luggage tag wall while shopping the label’s new Horizon rolling luggage collection (on-site hot stamping personalization is a must). A wall of the shop was turned over to formally fête the arrival of Les Parfums Louis Vuitton, the label’s first fragrance collection since the 1940s. Elsewhere, the arrangement of low-slung seating, warm-hued wood, and staggered display alcoves feel more like a luxurious living room than a retail boutique. You may not be able to put up your feet—even in your LV loafers—but this living room is worth spending some time in. King of Prussia Mall, 610-9920392; us.louisvuitton.com

First, the mall unveiled its new corridor of designer stores in September; now the King of Prussia Town Center (kingofprussia towncenter.com) adds even more hot restaurants and retailers to the mix. The 260,000-squarefoot outdoor lifestyle complex is home to Ulta Beauty, LA Fitness,

Nineteen properties are slated to open in the Town Center throughout next summer. This is JBG Companies’ first construction outside of the Washington, DC, area.

that complements the wonderful restaurants and shops at the neighboring King of Prussia Town Center,” says Adam Lampl, project manager. Another bonus: Easy access to attractions like Valley Forge National Historical Park and the Schuylkill River Trail. The first major property built west of Broad Street in over two decades, the dual branded W Philadelphia and Element Philadelphia hotels (starwoodhotels.com) at 15th and Chestnut Streets signal Philly’s best days are ahead, says Jeff Cohen, president of Vine Street Ventures Incorporated. Leading the development of the 51-story tower, now under construction, is VSV Subsidiary Vine Street Matthews. The W and Element will function simultaneously, with 295 and 460 rooms respectively. A full amenity floor including a spa and a rooftop pool will be W’s signature perks, while Element suits extended-stay guests with full kitchens in every room. The properties share 40,000 square feet of meeting space, which Cohen feels will fit the influx of business brought by the nearby Convention Center. “We thought we could create a unique product that Philadelphia has never seen before, operating two distinct hotels while also being attuned to the needs of the city’s business district,” says Cohen. “From a brand perspective, W has been trying to get into Philly for the last 20 years.” The hotels are expected for completion in mid-2018.

Two distinctly different hotels under one roof: the W Philadelphia and Element Philadelphia will share an address at 15th and Chestnut Streets.

COMFORT ZONE FOR SOPHISTICATED SEASONAL DÉCOR, ANI SEMERJIAN SAYS A LITTLE GLITZ GOES A LONG WAY. BY CONNIE CAPONE
For interior designer Ani Semerjian, the traditional Main Line style--from scalloped curtains and antique furniture to floral fabric and mellow palettes— simply did not jibe with the modern aesthetic she brought from her home city of San Francisco. After earning her Master’s degree in interior design from Drexel University in 2005, she softened her style heritage to suburban Philly’s influence and founded Semerjian Interiors with her husband, Mark. An HGTV fixture and home guru for NBC 10, Semerjian says her technique has evolved organically into what is now known as transitional design. This

As for au courant holiday decorating that doesn’t border on tacky, “Keep it simple,” Semerjian says. “It always looks clean when you stick to a single theme, incorporating two colors at most.” semerjianinteriors.com

TWENTY EIGHT IS ENOUGH FROM DIVING TO DRIVING (A GOLF CLUB!), PEEK INSIDE THE OMG-WORTHY AMENITIES AT UNIVERSITY CITY. A BY CONNIE CAPONE
Imagine that you could combine everything you love about your gym, spa, and country club into one dreamy urban Eden. Larry Korman, co-CEO of Korman Communities, did just that for the new AKA University City at Cira Centre South. Dubbed Level 28, the posh amenities floor--“a first of its kind in Philly,” says Korman--is open to both private members and residents of the property’s 268 hotel rooms and apartments. Here, Korman offers a look around. RELAX. A 72-foot stainless-steel pool,
on-site Technogym fitness training, yoga, and massage therapy round out Level 28’s wellness package. “The enclosed pool deck is the perfect spot to knock out emails or relax in the evening,” says Korman. RESET. Korman worked closely with architects to create the landscaped terrace, a 5,000-square-foot getaway with unrivaled views of the city skyline. “We wanted to ensure the space was as tranquil as possible, with sleek wood furnishings, abundant greenery and flowers, fire features, wine service, and more.” RECREATE. Level 28’s indoor 3-D golf simulator brings the putting green right to you. Cinephiles, meanwhile, can head to the private cinema for their movie fix, plus extras like wine tastings and a “meet the filmmakers” series. 2929 Walnut St., 215-372-9000; akauniversitycity.com

CLASSIC ELEGANCE FROM A SPIRAL STAIRCASE TO A SECRET GARDEN, THIS SOCIETY HILL HOME IS A SOLID BRICK GEM OF A FIND. BY JOANN GRECO
Anyone on their way to a movie, dinner, or an art gallery has probably passed the stately red brick home at Third and Walnut and wondered just what lies inside. If you’ve been intrigued by its marble terraces and lush plantings, its fourcar garage and classic proportions, know this: You ain’t seen nothing yet. As a visitor walks through the mahogany doors into a small foyer, she is greeted by a steel staircase that seems to bend and twirl for ages, unspooling like a Slinky

up to the sky. “We didn’t have a budget,” smiles the owner, Anthony, as he indicates the steps, which are comprised of four separate handassembled wood panels inset with more steel. “We didn’t let anything stand in our way.” Straight across from the entrance awaits a copper-roofed loggia that surrounds a surprise woodland garden—bigger and more lush than the front space, with five river birch trees topping out at about 60 feet—and provides a covered
walkway to the garage. The owners prefer to enter in more low-key fashion. After all, these empty nesters built this 5,400-square-foot home on several empty lots in 1999 because they placed a premium on privacy, security, and quiet. An inconspicuous side door leads to Anthony’s small office, which besides a desk and built-in bookshelves, sports a marbletopped bar and a leadglass door whose grapevine motif hints at what’s beyond. It’s this 1,200-bottle wine closet,
outfitted in mahogany cabinetry and rust and gray African slate— along with the garden— that Anthony will miss most when he and his wife, Marie, move permanently to their home down the Shore. “We go out for dinner just about every night,” he says, “and I love picking out the perfect accompaniment from my own collection.” Sweeping aside a pair of pocket doors, he leads a guest into that grand foyer. Beyond lies a powder room—featuring
a hand-painted mural as do many of the rooms— along with laundry and other utility rooms and, should one desire, an elevator. But why bother, when that delightful stairway beckons? On the second floor, the same warm bubinga (also known as African rosewood) flooring that runs throughout the home connects a sweeping suite of public spaces, beginning with a living area that features a distressed plaster feature wall and floor-to-ceiling ebony shelves filled

with objets. The sculptural six-foot-tall floor lamp, says Anthony, “is one that my crazy Cuban decorator, Pedro Rodriguez, found somewhere.” An adjunct sitting room overlooking the garden brings the outdoors in with brightly patterned patio furniture and a hand-assembled latticework wall covering. The dining area comfortably seats the owners’ immediate family of 15 as they gather for special occasions under the romantic glimmer of a Venetian light fixture. Nearby, the Euro Designs kitchen seamlessly blends burled light wood cabinetry and top-of-theline stainless steel appliances to ensure the party goes smoothly. Upstairs, a charming lightfilled guest room suite features a marble-clad bathroom, but it’s in the palatial master bedroom setup that the expert hand of Rodriguez most shines. The huge walk-in dressing room is a virtual copy of one designed for a New York media celebrity, while a distinctive and rare onyx from Iran covers the his-and-her sinks, the vanity table, and the rain shower. In the sleeping area, padded silk jacquard wall coverings, an eight-foot gilded mirror, a sleigh bed, and a generous seating area provide every comfort. Sixteen feet above, a cupola ceiling painted to resemble the sky just begs for a whimsical putto and, indeed, laughs Anthony, “Pedro wanted to paint his face at the center—but I drew the line at that.” For more information, contact Mike McCann, Berkshire Hathaway Fox & Roach Realtors, 530 Walnut St., 215-627-6005; mccannteam.com

“WHO DOESN’T NEED A LITTLE MUSCLE ON THE SCHUYLKILL AT RUSH HOUR?”
CALIFORNICATION WONDERING HOW TO CHANNEL WEST COAST COOL IN THE WINTER? JUST SLIP BEHIND THE WHEEL OF FERRARI’S LATEST RIDE. BY GEORGE POLGAR
In the super-car game the term “daily driver” is often code for entry level. That just doesn’t sound right when you are shopping for a Ferrari. What does sound very right is the screaming exhaust of the Ferrari California T Handling Speciale edition.
160
PHILLYSTYLEMAG.COM
Priced starting around $207,000, the California is a modest offering for Ferrari but, based on a daylong jaunt around South Jersey and the Main Line, this new variant proves plenty aggressive—and who doesn’t need a little muscle on the Schuylkill
at rush hour? The California is powered by a 3.9 liter, twin-turbo V8 engine producing 560 horsepower and a blistering zero-to-60 mph in about three seconds. The newly tuned suspension and steering make this model even more sporty and responsive.
And yet the California is very much a comfortable car. “The new California T HS offers the perfect combination of performance and daily drivability,” says Francis DeRuschi, general sales manager at Algar Ferrari of Philadelphia. “And at this price point it certainly
offers exceptional value.” Consider the buttery leather interior, carbon fiber accents, custom wheels, and convertible drop top and this car really lives up to its West Coast wow factor. 1234 E. Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr, 610-527-1100; algarferrari.com

MOMENT OF TRUTH “I LEFT SAN FRANCISCO RADIO AND MOVED TO PHILLY IN 1981 TO MAKE A CAREER HERE.” —pierre robert
Let’s get this show on the road: WMMR’s Pierre Robert still reports live from Philly’s biggest rock concerts.
UPSTANDING CITIZEN! STILL GOING STRONG AFTER 35 YEARS BEHIND THE MIC AT WMMR, PIERRE ROBERT TALKS ABOUT THE FORTUNE TELLER’S TALE THAT CAME TRUE, AND GOING LIVE AT LIVE AID.
On-air record player and rock-music storyteller Pierre Robert has been both the face and voice of Philly radio for more than three decades. But he’s also something of a journalist reporting on the sociology of this city, its stars, and most importantly to him, its music fans--not unlike the kind that he encountered during his career-making

move at 1985’s Live Aid. “I left San Francisco radio and moved to Philly in 1981 to make a career here, only to wind up at Essene, the health-food place off South Street, loading 50-pound sacks of brown rice. Not an auspicious start.” Ready to throw in the towel after months of being denied a meeting with WMMR,
Robert went to a palm reader, who told him he would soon receive a letter. “Next day I got a note from WMMR’s GM who told me to come by and discuss my future.” Just a few years later, Robert found himself at the Live Aid concert for African hunger relief at the old JFK Stadium. Even though rival station WYSP was the mega-
production’s on-air partner, Robert had volunteered for stage clean-up. It proved to be a serendipitous gig: Robert gained access to production and VIP areas that even WYSP didn’t have so he jumped at the chance to interview everyone from Jack Nicholson to Phil Collins.
So began Robert’s famously vivid live concert reports and what he describes as a bond between him and the City of Brotherly Love. “I bonded with Philly that day, and from there, Philly bonded with the planet [through Live Aid]. This city’s true potential debuted that day and I got to help play a part.”
