The Show(girl) Goes on The iconic vegas showgirl is quickly becoming a Thing of The pasT, buT you can sTill bask in her glow off The sTrip. by tess eyrich

Since the closing of Jubilee after its 34-year run at Bally’s last December, Vegas’s key cultural institutions have made moves to protect the history of the city’s most celebrated symbol of femininity: the showgirl. In 2015, the Nevada State

8  vegasmagazine.com

Museum augmented its Costume & Textile Collection with the donation of a massive archive of props and outfits—some of which arrived still on their original steel hangers— from the 50-year run of Les Folies Bergère at the

Tropicana. The collection is still being curated, but for now you’ll find a bejeweled costume on loan inside Downtown’s Mob Museum, while a second exhibit is slated to take up residence inside the Las Vegas Convention Center this summer.

According to Karan Feder, the Nevada State Museum’s guest curator of costume and textiles, acquiring the memorabilia was a major coup for the museum because such collections often are sold to the highest bidders (many of whom live

abroad) after shows close. “It’s usually just a money thing,” Feder says, “but these costumes are so important for us to have in Vegas because they help tell our story.” 309 S. Valley View Blvd., 702486-5205; museums. nevadaculture.org

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF clockwise from left: I previewed celebrated artist Georges Rousse’s first-ever permanent art installation (in a Starbucks!) at Cosmopolitan with Tyler Florence and Amy Rossetti; Fox 5’s Rachel Smith and Vegas’s marketing director, Halee Harczynski and I held a shopping party at Carmen Steffens—where we’re brand ambassadors—to benefit Best Buddies Nevada; at Vintner Grill, Shannon McBeath, Angela Chiu, Gina Schonfeld, Vanessa Breitling, and I got a sneak peek at what we’ll all be buying from Bungalow Clothing this year.

on my RadaR…

I got suckered into doing a lot in the last month by one tiny cosmopolite in the form of my 7-year-old daughter celebrating a “birthday month,” per our family custom. I have no regrets, though, because our whirlwind tour reminded me of the wonder I felt when I first passed through Las Vegas as a child. In 19(ahem), there weren’t multifloor competing palaces to chocolate (Hershey’s World vs. M&M’s World would have blown my mind), or television chefs, but there was Circus Circus and there were palm trees, and that was glamour I could get

behind. Showing Emily the largest chocolate fountain in the world (at Jean Philippe Patisserie in Bellagio); “Sea Monsters Revealed” at Shark Reef Aquarium inside Mandalay Bay; and the elaborate 83,000 flowers of Bellagio Conservatory’s Japanese Spring Celebration gave me that same first-time thrill. At Sage in Aria, the new spring menu provided one of my most memorable meals in months (including beets I would order for a last meal). We previewed the delicious new Le Pho in Downtown, whose genius fresh spring roll bar lets you concoct your own and name it on

the blackboard (the most orders will land “The Andrea” on the menu, so look for it). And we danced in confetti that exploded from the ceiling at this year’s incredible Cirque du Soleil “One Night for One Drop” event. Whether you’re a local or visiting, indulging in a romantic weekend or with the whole clan in tow, I hope you’ll experience all the wonder summer in Vegas can offer. We have a few ideas to get you started.

For the fourth consecutive spring, One Night for One Drop cemented its status as one of the highlights of the local philanthropic calendar, this year bringing its over-the-top artistry and star-studded guest list to Downtown Las Vegas for the very first time. Before the performance, guests including Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leakes, The Real co-host Jeannie Mai, and “Unwritten” singer-songwriter Natasha Bedingfield walked the event’s signature blue carpet during a pre-show reception at the Keep Memory Alive Event Center. The festivities then relocated to the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, where Cirque du Soleil Senior Vice President Jerry Nadal introduced a spirited live auction îî

During the show—which reflected the personal experiences of its Moroccan-born artistic director, Hassan El Hajjami—Leona Lewis stunned the crowd with jaw-dropping renditions of two of her most popular hits, “Bleeding Love” and “Thunder,” while 9-year-old Black-ish star Miles “Baby Boogaloo” Brown shared the spotlight with the more than 100 Cirque artists who participated in the production. Later in the evening, Brown and other celebrity pals celebrated at an Alice in Wonderland-themed after-party staged in a tent on the Smith Center grounds; considering the one-night-only event raised an astonishing $6.5 million for water access and conservation programs around the globe, we’ll agree that a celebration was well warranted.

SCENE EVERYBODY ’s talking aBOut...

GRAND OPENER tell-it-like-it-is country singer acey Musgraves has shared the stage and studio with some of the biggest names in music. starting this spring, it’s george strait at t-mobile arena.

photography by Kelly Christine sutton

“Life ain’t always roses and pantyhose, and I ain’t pageant material,” Kacey Musgraves sings on the title track of her second major-label album, Pageant Material, released last June. Yet while she’s never been one to describe herself as the star of the show, it’s safe to say 27-year-old Musgraves— who famously beat Taylor Swift in the Best Country Album category at the Grammy Awards in 2014— will be a fitting complement to King of Country George Strait when she opens his recurring shows at the new T-Mobile Arena. How did you feel about being chosen as the sole opener for George Strait’s Vegas shows? I’m from Texas, and you don’t grow up in Texas without being a big fan of George Strait, so I was extremely ecstatic—it was an immediate yes. Besides Strait, who îî

vegasmagazine.com  41

were some of the other artists that inspired you the most growing up? I had a huge love of Top 40 pop radio, like ’N Sync and the Spice Girls. But I also grew up in Texas around country music, so there was a big mash-up of the two genres going on in my head. Then I got really into the whole songwriting world— Buddy and Julie Miller, Patty Griffin, Mindy Smith—and somewhere along the way I found a blend of all of those things. With Pageant Material, though, I was really inspired by Jim Croce, John Denver, and Glen Campbell. This was a whirlwind year for you; what were some of the highlights? One of the big ones was bringing Sheryl Crow out on stage with me at the Ryman Auditorium to sing “If It Makes You Happy.” She came out and it was just such a moment—my ultimate karaoke dream come true. We also sang “Are You Sure” with Willie Nelson on New Year’s Eve for a sold-out crowd, and that was mind-blowing. Your songs are known for their relatability, but people also seem eager to ascribe political meanings to your lyrics. Does that bother you? My songs are inspired by life as I live it and make mistakes and have relationships and triumphs and arguments. People are always going to take away their own meanings, and that’s fine. I don’t let other people’s ideas attach themselves to me or bother me. That’s the beauty of a song: It can mean one thing to me and a totally different thing to someone else. From $75. Mask and you shall receive! The club’s intriguing logo adorning a classic waterfall is visible from a glassenclosed patio.

Scan the Strip and you’ll see that the “If you build it, they will come” strategy has been behind many a Vegas megaclub—and particularly effective when there’s a huge DJ or 5 attached to the brand. But if Wynn Las Vegas Vice President of Operations Sean Christie has anything to do with it, the Vegas nightlife scene might soon see a renaissance in the form of smaller, more intimate clubs like Intrigue, the resort’s hotly anticipated revamp of the former Tryst space. In addition to its signature waterfall and state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, the 1,200-capacity venue now features a glass-enclosed patio. Downstairs, inside the former kitchen, an invite-only, strictly social mediafree club-within-the-club comes complete with its own turntables, a wall of vintage vinyl records, and even secret entrances to ensure that prying eyes—and smartphones—don’t get access. Christie notes that the policy, by the way, will be strictly enforced. DJs actually have to be able to use vinyl if they want to play the room, but that doesn’t mean guests should discount the possibility of seeing some of the Strip’s heaviest hitters stop by for a quick set. “We’re trying to let the brand itself be the star of the marketing and advertising,” Christie says. “If there is a big-name DJ, we’re just not going to advertise it.” Now that’s ingtriguing! In quick succession, Clique Hospitality opened its Hearthstone Kitchen & Cellar and Salute Trattoria Italiana in Red Rock Resort, followed by Clique Lounge in Cosmopolitan, when the group, helmed by Light Group vet Andy Masi, announced it would take over Mercadito and turn it into Libre Mexican Cantina. Chef and partner Brian Massie had developed the Clique and Hearthstone menus, but who knew he was a pro at fun, accessible (and even healthy-ish) Mexican? (He had help from Jesus “Chuy” Villegas, recently of Diablo’s Cantina.) Clique isn’t stopping there: Next up are rustic Italian Bottiglia, and an edgy Mexican place, Borracha, both in Green Valley Ranch. When Mercadito opened in 2014, it was part of a massive expansion of the resort’s dining venues. “The layout and design were great,” Masi says. “But it was too serious! We needed a lighter atmosphere, and tequila, beer and tacos that were, well, a little sillier.” Enter festive lucha libre Mexican wrestling décor, plus sizzling fajitas, street tacos, and unexpected twists like mini crab ceviche tacos and vegan coconut ceviche. You’re definitely not a stranger to performing in Vegas; what do you like best about playing here? It’s a fun town! Anything goes. People are out for a great time and in the mood for it, so what could be better than for us to play to a pumped-up Vegas audience? What can audiences look

forward to from your House of Blues residency? The timeless Idol hits with some deep cuts. Favorite songs to still play live? “White Wedding,” “Flesh for Fantasy,” “Rebel Yell,” “Postcards From the Past,” and “Pumping on Steel.” And your favorite music to listen

to? Rock ’n’ roll, punk rock, R&B, reggae, and some hip-hop and rap. Which artists have inspired you the most? John Lennon, David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Dr. Dre. Any advice you’d give to younger musicians of the underground? I started making music and having an artistic life for the love of

A RARE SHOW OF ELLSWORTH ELLY PRINTS BRINGS THE PAINTER AND PRINTMAKER’S SATURATED COLORS TO LAS VEGAS.

Prints of light! Color Panels, 2011.

50  vegasmagazine.com

The renowned American painter, sculptor, and printmaker Ellsworth Kelly, who is widely considered one of the leading abstract artists of the postwar period, died at 92 last December. Which makes an exhibit of more than 20 of his prints, curated by Michele Quinn for UNLV’s Marjorie Barrick Museum, particularly

unusual. “[Barrick director] Aurore Giguet and I were already talking about putting this show together before he passed away. But when an artist dies, most everything goes into lockdown for a while,” Quinn says. Gemini G.E.L., the legendary print workshop in Los Angeles with which Kelly had worked since 1970, loaned a

number of pieces. “They were really generous at a difficult time,” she says, “and local private collectors lent other pieces.” In other words, the mix in this show is rare. Quinn’s favorites? “You can’t get much more iconic than Red,” a deeply saturated 2001 lithograph that is Ellsworth Kelly at his most classic. Known for

translating what he observed into sharp abstractions, Kelly also had a softer side. “Daffodil is here, and the general public is less familiar with his plant drawings,” Quinn says. “I love them.” Through May 14, Marjorie Barrick Museum, UNLV, 4505 S. MAGIC MEMORIES eep MeMory Alive’s annual power of love gala is the must-attend event of the year. By AndreA Bennett

Keep Memory Alive’s Power of Love gala attracts major talent, even luring Celine Dion out of retirement to sing “The Prayer” with Andrea Bocelli last year.

52  vegasmagazine.com

In its 20 years of raising money to treat patients with neurodegenerative diseases and assist their caretakers, Keep Memory Alive’s Power of Love gala draws a star-studded roster of attendees. This year, the event celebrates Tony Bennett’s 90th—expect surprise performances. KMA has accomplished such feats as luring Celine Dion out of retirement to sing with Andrea Bocelli and bringing together Quincy Jones and Sir Michael Caine for their 80th birthdays. But the gala, which will attract more than 1,600 guests this year—always benefiting the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health—wasn’t always a massive affair, explains Camille Ruvo, cofounder of KMA with her husband, Larry. “It started with a small celebration of life for my father-in-law, Lou [who had died the prior year of Alzheimer’s] upstairs at Spago,” she explains. “Jean Paul DeJoria [founder of Paul Mitchell Systems] dropped by our table, and on hearing why we were there, pledged $5,000 to Alzheimer’s research.” An idea was born. Once the party outgrew Spago and moved to Postrio—where Wolfgang Puck continued to donate staff and food—“It became this great dinner party where spontaneous auctions were happening,” she explains. One memorable auction item, in 2003, was a session with sexpert Dr. Ruth Westheimer. More recently, Cindy Crawford threw in her homemade apple pie to a retreat she

The highlights don’t end there: In 2008, Michael Bublé refused his entertainment fee, donating it back to KMA. The event’s 10th anniversary, catered by Puck, Emeril Lagasse, and Nobu Matsuhisa, raised $22 million, the largest single-night fundraising figure to date (assisted by the $700,000 sale of two custom Frank Gehry doghouses). The return of Siegfried and Roy in 2009 to perform with their tigers marked their first and last performance since Roy’s disastrous attack. Muhammad Ali’s 70th birthday included Stevie Wonder singing “Happy

Birthday” and LL Cool J joined onstage by Sugar Ray Leonard, Evander Holyfield, and Tommy “Hitman” Hearns for “Mama Said Knock You Out.” In 2014, guests were treated to a duet between Gloria Estefan and Carole King. Plus: A black bustier-clad Rita Moreno made her way from the stage to shimmy for good sport Steve Wynn. Ruvo demurs when asked how she and Larry are able to attract such serious wattage each year. “This is about getting the message out the old-fashioned way—by talking to anyone we can. BONJOUR, ROSALLIE! The rustic flavors of southern France find a home in Las Vegas at Rosallie Le French Café, a charming coffee shop that’s elevated the Spring Valley food scene since quietly debuting in fall 2015. Owner Jonathan Pluvinet carries on a family tradition stateside—his parents opened the original Rosallie restaurant in Nice, France, in 1983—bringing with him a mouthwatering range of authentic breads and pastries (think chocolate croissants and macarons), fresh soups and salads, and hearty sandwiches. The star of Pluvinet’s menu is the Sud, a prosciutto and red pepper-stuffed sandwich on house-made country bread, although the café’s beverage offerings, including premium French press coffees, espressos, and a variety of loose-leaf teas, also shouldn’t be missed. GUTEN MORGAN! TRACY MORGAN PICKS UP THE PIECES IN A NEW TOUR THAT FINDS THE COMEDY IN CATASTROPHE. BY SETH OLENICK

fodder for his current tour. “If you spent 10 days in a coma and you got hit by an 18-wheeler going 65 mph, you’re gonna talk about that stuff,” he explains. It’s hard to make sense of an event like this, which took the life of his friend and fellow come-

dian Jimmy Mack, but that’s what Morgan does in Picking Up the Pieces, which lands at the Mirage’s Terry Fator Theatre for two days in May. “It’s a tragic thing,” he says. “But what comes out of tragedy? Funny. When I came back, I was either

going to give you all a train wreck or a miracle. Due to my family and the doctors and God himself, he gave y’all a miracle.” Despite his ongoing aches and pains, Morgan has found the funny, and he brings humility to his situation by saying the

needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. “We all fall down, but we get back up. I want to be an inspiration to younger stand-ups.” May 6 and 7, Terry Fator Theatre at Mirage Hotel and Casino, 800-374-9000; mirage.com

FREE SPIRIT IN HIS DEBUT AS CREATIVE DIRECTOR, DESIGNER PETER DUNDAS CONJURES THE CAVALLI WOMAN OF TODAY.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRUCE WEBER

BY BRYN KENNY

Peter Dundas’s Spring/ Summer 2016 collection for Roberto Cavalli—his first as creative director—draws from the Italian house’s familiar codes while incorporating a more irreverent, street-smart perspective.

“I wanted to explore sportier ways of expressing the Cavalli woman’s vibe,” says Dundas of his inspiration behind the biker babe-meets-’80s pop star ensembles he sent down the runway. “The

collection is precious, but there is no attitude. It’s a more modern way to dress that doesn’t forget the essence of who the Roberto Cavalli woman is—very glamorous and sexy.” For daytime looks,

Dundas paired modern separates, such as a billowing trench coat in washed-out peach, with short shorts and buff leather, while lavender, high-waisted jeans, burnout suede tops, and brocade îî

lion prints were mixed, matched, and thrown together with abandon. Somewhere along the way, he segued day into night, pairing sweatshirt-style tops with high-low ball skirts and incorporating accents of shimmering lamé and graphic animal prints. In the collection are plenty of red-carpet moments, including embroidered, dancing-ontables minis, and more ethereal (though hardly less bold) evening dresses consisting mainly of precariously placed swaths of tie-dyed chiffon and anchoring hardware. “They are all Cavalli classics but reinterpreted for the Cavalli woman of today—a true free spirit who drinks in life with the utmost intensity,” says Dundas of his muse. “She puts her perception of beauty, sensuality, and vitality before the constraints of fashion trends.” It comes as no surprise that Dundas knows the Cavalli woman well; his new post marks a

reunion of sorts between the Oslo, Norway–born designer and the Italian luxury house. From 2002 until 2005, Dundas served as chief designer at Cavalli, holding posts at various other blockbuster brands in between, including Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix, Emmanuel Ungaro, and Emilio Pucci. Although he now divides his time between Cavalli headquarters in Florence and his longtime Paris home, he spent his teenage years in Indiana and attended the Parsons School of Design in New York. This eclectic upbringing is evident in his boundarypushing aesthetic. “Every experience I have had has added a layer to who I am as a designer today,” he says. “Cavalli has a unique place in fashion that I want to reclaim and evolve. We are just getting started, but I am looking forward to the journey.” The Shops at Crystals, 702-736-7300; robertocavalli.com

Bee Jeweled A trip to the Yucatán Peninsula to assist her mother on a photo shoot put British-born Anna Swonetz not only in the path of her future husband, photographer Brad Swonetz, but also reawakened some latent creative desires. After marrying, the couple settled in Southern California, where she launched a line of handmade necklaces and bracelets personalized with names, initials, and dates using metal stamps, since she couldn’t find personalized jewelry that she loved. Then Vegas came calling, and the two settled here, where she now runs her AnnaBee designs from a Downtown studio space. AnnaBee offers Swonetz’s popular custom nameplates, as well as a range of minimalist ready-to-wear

pieces made with top-quality metals and gemstones, cheeky T-shirts and baby gear, and metallic tattoos. This spring, be on the lookout for her updated take on the locket, designed in the brand’s signature hexagon shape. “I’m really sentimental,” she says, “so I like to take old pieces, like the locket or the Irish claddagh, that have meaning for me and reinvent them in new ways.” Yet while she often takes inspiration from the past, she’s quick to note that being part of Downtown’s growing arts community has thoroughly invigorated her work. “It’s inspiring to be around so many other people who are doing the same thing creatively and trying to juggle it all,” she adds. “We all help each other.” annabee.com

“We installed the holographic displays to shoWcase roberto coin jeWelry in an impressive and shoWstopping Way—in true vegas fashion.” –peter webster

Much like Las Vegas itself, the Italian fine jewelry brand Roberto Coin has come an impressively long way in a short period of time. Founded by its namesake owner and his business partner, Peter Webster, in 1977, the celebrity-favorite atelier has ascended the retail hierarchy in its four decades, earning high praise for its romantic, classically inspired pieces made from 18-karat gold, diamonds, and colored gemstones. In recent years the brand has added several strategically placed West Coast boutiques in cities like Palm Desert and Manhattan Beach, as well as a brandnew Vegas flagship store inside the Appian Way Shops at Caesars Palace. “We’ve seen incredible

growth in our Las Vegas clientele in recent years,” says Webster, “so this expansion really felt like the right fit at the right time.” The brand’s 10th standalone boutique in North America, the Caesars store showcases a minimalist, Champagne-toned design scheme anchored by two holographic jewelry displays that introduce guests to signature elements of Coin’s oeuvre, including his ultramodern Pois Moi collection, sleek Black Jade line of asymmetrical pendants and earrings, and whimsical, wildlife-inspired Animalier bangles—each signed, naturally, with the jeweler’s singular finishing touch, a hidden ruby for prosperity. STYLE TREND

SPRING FLING!

Unlike the aesthetic we’re known for in Vegas (punishing seven-inch heels, bandage dress), our everyday look is a lot more fun. And as many locals have learned—as well as can’t-be-named celebs and socialites from all over the country—the stylists of Las Vegas’s Bungalow Clothing assemble the look in a flash. John Legend is a cofounder of the four-year-old online personal shopping business, which works like this: Create a style profile, get a box of clothes curated just for you, and pay for only what you keep—no membership, styling, or even shipping fees, and no minimum charge. This year, the clothing curators’ Valley of the Dolls-themed fashion show drove home the season’s ease. “We can still look sweet and seductive and powerful whether we’re wearing a daytime dress or sporty workout outfit,” says cofounder Meital Bronstein. “We want to show women that they can mix a nautical striped sweater and a floral skirt. The jacket is not just for fall; it’s been translated into spring fabrics like cotton bouclé. Plus, we put the models in flip-flops and Keds, because women should feel glamorous and sexy—but they should also be able to move.” After the show, women flocked backstage to snap up pieces from IRO, Chaser, Haute Hippie, and other brands, with 20 percent of proceeds going to Vegas-based nonprofit Opportunity Village—a relationship that’s leading to future shows. “We want our clothes to work for us,” Bronstein explains. And when they also work for the community, even better. 888-5073546; bungalowclothing.com

The Venue: The luxurious wedding spaces at Four Seasons (fourseasons .com) and Wynn Las Vegas (wynn lasvegas.com) have been known to field short-notice requests from couples with as little as a few weeks’ notice; off the Strip, meanwhile, Bali Hai Golf Club (balihaigolfclub.com) and Canyon Gate Country Club (canyon-gate.com) typically require additional planning, but many couples specifically plan far ahead for those idyllic views. The Dress: Browse a curated selection from the likes of Lazaro and Vera Wang at Couture Bride’s appointment-only salon (couturebridelv.com), or stop by Fashion Show’s new Tadashi Shoji boutique (tadashishoji.com), which isn’t a traditional bridal boutique, but does carry bridal—plus styles for the wedding party, mother-of-thebride, and flower girl. Planning pros recommend getting started at least six to nine months in advance. Early birds get the most lavish venues, and custom suits, dresses, and rings.

DAYS BEFORE THE BIG DAYÉ In 2015, more marriage licenses were issued in Clark County than anywhere else in the country, thanks, in part, to the enduring tradition of the Vegasstyle shotgun wedding. The Venue: Downtown’s Chapel of the Flowers offers pre-wedding limousine transportation to and from the courthouse to obtain your marriage license (littlechapel.com), but if you’re in the market for something more sophisticated, the team behind IPEC can mobilize within 48 hours (ipeclv.com). The Dress: Outfit your entire bridal party at Celebrations Bridal & Fashion in Spring Valley (celebrationslvnv.com), or discover a selection of short-term options by Badgley Mischka, Marchesa, and more at the Cosmopolitan’s Rent the Runway boutique (renttherunway.com). The Tux: Snag suiting, accessories, and footwear from Suitsupply at the Grand Canal Shoppes at Venetian and Palazzo (suitsupply.com). The Flowers: A Garden Floral at the Tropicana boasts next-day delivery on bridal bouquets assembled by a former head of Bellagio’s horticultural department (agarden floral.com). The Rings: Head to the Shops at Crystals for a Tiffany & Co. boutique with its own proposal balcony (tiffany.com). The Cake: Freed’s Bakery is a locals’ favorite for last-minute treats (freedsbakery .com), while Sprinkles at the Linq serves unconventional “cakes” made from tiered cupcakes (sprinkles.com). The Hair and Makeup: Janine Cali and LaVey Kindred-Ortiz of Your Beauty Call are godsends for brides in need of eleventh-hour touch-ups (yourbeauty call.com). TEASE ME, DITA Burlesque’s it girl Dita Von teese makes a case for glamour that never sleeps. by alexandria abramian

PhotograPhy by Kailyn idora (both Pages)

Dita does Dallas— and Vegas!—riding a plush mechanical bull in her Burlesque: Strip Strip Hooray! show.

When Dita Von teese opens the Door to her Tudor Revival home in Los Angeles, it’s instantly apparent that there is no off-duty mode for the glamorous brunette. Instead, the petite artist, who has crafted her own niche as a modern-day burlesque muse, channels film noir era elegance in a 1940s pink silk dressing gown. Hair, makeup, and jewelry: All are a state of close-up perfection: “I think natural beauty is great and I wish I had that,” says the 43-year-old Von Teese. “Like, ‘Oh, I woke up like this.’ But the truth is, I’m an ordinary blonde girl from a farming town in Michigan. And I don’t want to be ordinary.” Sitting amid a menagerie of stuffed exotic animals in her living room with triple height ceilings and Gothic arched windows, there’s very little that qualifies as ordinary. As if to underscore the fact, Von Teese’s Devonshire

Rex cat, Aleister Von Teese, who currently attracts nearly 64,000 followers on Instagram, strolls past. Nearby, a stack of her latest book, Your Beauty Mark: The Ultimate Guide to Eccentric Glamour, offers an in-depth, DIY peek into Von Teese’s very unique revival of old-school style. She did once appear at a benefit for the New York Academy of Art wearing nothing but $5 million in diamonds, but the book, she explains, is not about imitating her rather outré brand of allure. “You can create glamour—and this book is a step-by-step how-to,” she says. “Even if you don’t want to look like a 1940s-era movie star, this is about designing your own life and crafting your own myths. And the book is full of my friends who aren’t Victoria’s Secret supermodels, but have nevertheless gone from modest beauties to birds of paradise.”

Ordinary girls don’t usually slither into life-sized martini glasses. This one does —in another popular act from her Burlesque: Strip Strip Hooray! tour.

The book covers everything from achieving her pin-up perfect hair to selecting that just-so shade of red lipstick. “I talk about things like showgirl makeup and show people how you can incorporate a little bit of the showgirl thing into your look without going fully into it. Even people who have no intention of doing a burlesque show can put these tips to use.” And it is just this penchant for more-is-more, showgirlchanneling beauty that has drawn Von Teese to Las Vegas over the years. “I love how Las Vegas encourages people to get dressed up and make an effort,” says the style legend. “I feel that Vegas is historically a glamorous place, so I love getting really dressed up when I go there,” she adds. (Of course, she has dressed down here many times—notably swirling around clad in Swarovski crystals in an enormous martini glass during the tour of her long-running variety show, Burlesque: Strip Strip Hooray!) “I always try to uphold this sense of glamour when I’m in Vegas, but I have to admit it’s not always easy when the general population is in Crocs. There’s a lot of ‘athleisure-wear’ there. I hope it will evolve back into what it used to be.” Even when she goes to the gym, Von Teese wears a skirt over her yoga pants. “It’s my duty to stand for something,” she asserts. “I once ran into a boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend when I wasn’t dressed up and I thought to myself, I’m never making that mistake again.” Walking through her 1927 home, where Von Teese converted three separate bedrooms into a series of closets organized by era and function, she says that when heading to Las Vegas, she opts for her “late ’50s and early ’60s dresses, keeping in mind that the air conditioning means everything is always ice cold. I always have my arms covered there,” she says. “I think a lot about the whole Rat Pack era and, of course, we all want to look like Sharon Stone in Casino. That’s a good, strong look.” Strong looks are what Von Teese herself is known for, whether she’s on stage in her signature Swarovski-covered pasties, or walking the red carpet wearing high-concept clothes designed by people such as Jean Paul Gaultier, for whom Von Teese is one of his most doted-upon muses. “I’ve walked in Jean Paul Gaultier couture shows four times,” says Von Teese. “One of my favorite moments was a butterfly corset he made. It was very show-girly with a feather headdress. That was a great moment.” Recent Vegas trips have seen the glamour queen backstage at one of the final Jubilee! shows at Bally’s, where she posed with the performers, her ultra petite frame contrasting with the towering dancers. Von Teese counts the Liberace Museum and Jardin restaurant at Wynn as personal favorites in town, as well as Aburiya Raku restaurant on Spring Mountain Road. While Von Teese has taken her performance to Vegas in the past, she says she would love to perform more in the future, and, ahem, teases that a Vegas residency isn’t out of the running: “That’s the best thing to do showbiz-wise.”

“The TruTh is, i’m an ordinary blonde girl from a farming Town in michigan. and i don’T wanT To be ordinary.” —dita von teese

Dita counts this Calligraphy dress by Jean Paul Gaultier as one of her all-time favorite red-carpet looks, worn here at the AMFAR Cinema Against AIDS 2009 Cocktail Party at the Hotel du Cap during the 62nd annual Cannes Film Festival. Dita and Zac Posen attend the “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” Costume Institute Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2014 in another favorite look—Posen’s mermaid petal gown with red details, including a scarlet Roger Vivier clutch.

According to a recent report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, if you haven’t struck it rich by the age of 35, it’s probably never going to happen. Not so with skin. For, regardless of good genes, UVA avoidance, and copious consumption of water, the vast majority of us will have a wealth of wrinkles by 35. No wonder the beauty industry reports an explosion of activity in antiaging products among consumers 35 and up. Offering salvation from the finest lines to the deepest crevices, “The age-specialist category,” says retail analyst Karen Grant of the NPD Group, “showed a 20 percent increase in 2015, the main growth coming from women over 35 who are buying and replenishing their products online.” And by all accounts, they’re buying in bulk. The US skincare market is

98  vegasmagazine.com

worth $5.2 billion. Almost half of that—$2.3 billion—is spent on prestige antiaging facial skincare, high-end products that offer high-tech hope of younger-looking skin for longer. “It has become almost like the cell phone industry, where each year there’s new technology and advancements,” says Grant. “It used to be that products were all-in-one—they were trying to do everything. Today, leading brands in antiaging offer products that are targeted to specific areas, whether it’s plumping and hydrating or focusing on fine lines and wrinkles.” Dr. Alexa Kimball, a professor of dermatology at Harvard, says, “It can be challenging for consumers to find the best products for their skin. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get results, but concentrations of ingredients matter, and formulations matter.”

She lists retinoids, alpha hydroxy acid, and salicylic acid as important for cell turnover, and moisturizers to boost the skin’s moisture barrier, which is depleted as we age, especially after menopause, causing dryness and dullness. Whichever products we choose, Kimball urges us to manage our expectations. “It is not realistic to expect to look 20 years younger.” However, she says, “you can start to see a real effect on fine wrinkles in a week, and by 12 weeks, detectable changes are valid.”

The fruit and flowers are handpicked between April and May, then shipped to the Chanel Research and Technology Center, just outside of Paris, for a purification process known as Chrono-Extraction. This produces the most potent of active molecules, known as Éphémères de Planifolia, which are responsible for boosting the enzymes proven to help skin regenerate and look younger. chanel.com Our tester reports: “I tend not to associate Chanel with high-tech skincare. Fragrances, cosmetics, body creams, absolutely. But rigorous research and development, unique purification technology, and rare and potent natural botanicals (sustainably cultivated, too)? “Chanel’s commitment to being a top player in the antiaging category is manifested in Sublimage. It’s a fantastic range of products. As well as the luxury of the delicious fragrance, the rich bronze packaging, and the custard-thick indulgent textures, it actually works. “Yes, after four weeks of religiously using the products, I noticed my skin had a smoother, plumper, bouncier texture, which meant wrinkles and fine lines were less obvious, my makeup looked and felt better… heck, I didn’t even need as much makeup. “Sublimage is a beautiful skincare experience. And to celebrate its 10th anniversary, Chanel has launched three new densities of the cornerstone product, La Crème. For my dry skin, I preferred the medium texture, but the

Texture Fine and Texture Suprême all deliver the same replenishing properties. “My favorite product: the genius L’Essence, which gives an added moisture boost to La Crème and made my skin look visibly more alive!”

LA MER Claims: Profound powers of skin transformation, derived from potent, highly active ingredients like nutrient-rich algae, protective antioxidant extracts, and semiprecious stones through a unique three- to four-month bio-fermentation process. La Mer was created by Dr. Max Huber, an aerospace scientist, following an accident that left him with severe chemical burns for which he could find no relief. cremedelamer.com Our tester reports: “In the first week of the testing, the Renewal Oil (which goes on first) and brand-new Genaissance de la Mer created a noticeable texture difference to my skin. The Renewal Oil immediately absorbed, and the Genaissance was simply magnificent, making my face feel fresh and energized. After the second week of using them together, I saw small lines disappear and the whole of my face felt a bit fuller and livelier. Then, with every week, I noticed more softness, brightness, and an alert appearance. “One of the most refreshing aspects of the regime was the Lifting Eye Serum, which was gentle yet packed a punch. After only one week, the skin around my eyes was noticeably firmer and brighter, and more youthful, especially in the areas where I was collecting crow’s-feet. After three weeks, the evening’s application of serum came to feel like a minifacial for my eyes. “After day-and-night usage over six weeks, my face carried a natural suppleness, smoothness, even tone, and brightness that did not exist prior. My makeup also began to look so much better, more natural. And the fine lines that always seemed to peer through my foundation? Gone. Overall, my skin is much more alive. And happier!”

SISLEY | SISLEÿA Claims: This iconic product range aims to tackle behavioral aging (also called epigenetic) as well as genetic aging. Stress, sun, pollution, too much partying… all of these external factors cause a “jamming” of the skin cells’ life cycle and reduce the skin’s ability to repair and renew itself. New, powerful active ingredients, such as Lindera extract, Persian acacia extract, and yeast and soya protein complex, are said to help restore the cellular cycle’s functioning mechanisms. sisley-paris.com Our tester reports: “With its roots in the country that coined the phrase ‘femme fatale’ and its three-generationsdeep reputation as the go-to skincare provider for some of the most beautiful women in the world, it’s no surprise that my Sisley Paris antiaging regime delivered results that can only be described as très bien! “Following a simple four-part plan, these new high-tech products were easily integrated into my daily routine. I began to look forward to the nostalgic fragrance each morning when applying the Sisleÿa Essential Skincare Lotion. With the lotion quickly absorbed into the skin, my face immediately felt more nourished. Despite the ultramodern plant-based formulations, the serum happily felt decidedly natural. Soon it was a favorite must-have, one I began to pack in my handbag for quick midday or in-flight hydration. “The Daily Line Reducer, while its scent was reminiscent of a self-tanner, packed the biggest and most surprising wallop of the four products. Used liberally on my décolletage, fine lines and wrinkles were visibly minimized in just three days—even without my glasses! It’s as close to a miracle product as I’ve ever experienced. “The Eye & Lip Contour Cream and brand-new L’Integral Anti-Age moisturizer delivered a hydrated, firmer skin texture, with results peaking at about three weeks. While a bit heavy for daytime use, generous evening applications of the duo-moisturizers on my notoriously dry skin delivered a déjà vu of sorts from 10 years earlier.”

Our tester reports: “If you have dry skin, fine lines, and volume loss, I would highly recommend Dior Capture Totale. And I don’t say this lightly. Relying until now on good genes—and being lazy to boot—I wasn’t looking forward to using a regimen of products, but I grew to love the structure of the routine. And the products are gorgeous. “Within just two to three weeks, I saw a huge improvement in my skin. I had never used a morning routine, mistakenly believing skin needed a few hours to absorb moisturizers. But the lightness of the Multi-Perfection Crème Universal hydrated my skin without greasiness, allowing me to use less concealer and foundation and rendering my lines—especially those annoying ones around the mouth—less noticeable. I realized I was now repairing my skin rather than having to apply more makeup to conceal its shortcomings. I was floored by the lightness of the products, and yet as soon as I applied them, I could feel them starting to work. I did not lose dark spots, but by week five, my skin definitely felt firmer and far less dry. “These days, makeup is less essential for me, as my skin is well hydrated and my tone is more even. I especially love Dream Skin, which I began to use as an around-the-eye brightener but now use all over. It’s neither a tint nor a moisturizer, and yet the dreamy lotion gives my face a radiant glow.”

LA PRAIRIE | Skin Caviar Claims: Pure caviar extract is packed with amino acids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals and tested to profoundly improve the skin’s appearance of firmness, elasticity, and tone. Formerly the caviar extract was sourced from wild sturgeon, long believed to offer the highest quality available. Now La Prairie has discovered an alternative high-quality source in the Baerli sturgeon, grown sustainably on aqua-farms. laprairie.com Our tester reports: “The La Prairie experience is a 10 out of 10. The first step, the Liquid Caviar Lift, goes on easily and only requires a small amount— one to two short pumps—to cover your face and neck. It’s a nice light layer, preparing skin for the next step, the Luxe Cream and Eye Lift, which provides a really luxurious layer of moisture and which absorbs nicely. While these are among the priciest of products I have tried, I use far less, so they will last much longer. “After four weeks of using the products, someone in my office asked me if I had work done! My fine lines are reduced, and the overall look of my skin is great. I am going to be 50 this year and have never had any kind of fillers or Botox, so the fact is, someone noticed the positive effects of La Prairie enough to ask me if I did anything! “Finally, the Skin Caviar Foundation is exceptional. One or two small dabs gives just the right coverage to reduce redness and age spots and leave my skin looking smooth, radiant, and even-toned. It’s the best I have ever used—hands down. “My husband, who now knows that I have been in a trial, says he notices a change and says I look refreshed and youthful. He said I should keep doing the routine! Those were his words, not mine.”

AS COMMERCE BECOMES INCREASINGLY CUTTHROAT AND PROFITABILITY IS CHAMPIONED AT ANY COST, IS THERE ROOM IN THE ECONOMIC EQUATION FOR KINDNESS, CONSCIENCE, AND HUMANE VALUES? MANY BUSINESS LEADERS ARE PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON THEIR HEARTS AND SAYING YES...

by kathy blackwell

For decades, the boom in new technologies and expanding markets led to massive corporate growth and record profits. But that bottom-line success came at a huge cost to the environment, labor practices, and our treatment of animals, from their mass confinement on factory farms to wildlife trafficking and laboratory testing. As we move deeper into the 21st century, however, a new story is emerging. Those same innovations and advancements are not only bringing more awareness to animal cruelty issues, but they’ve become a force for good in the hands of today’s most innovative corporate leaders and entrepreneurs. Companies like Walmart, Whole Foods Market, and Chipotle Mexican Grill are paving the way by using creative solutions to stop the exploitation of animals, and although these businesses are driven by the belief that it’s the right thing to do, they’re seeing huge financial benefits as well. It’s a simple matter of marrying our values with our behavior, says Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, the country’s largest animal protection organization. In his new book, The Humane Economy: How Innovators and Enlightened Consumers Are Transforming the Lives of Animals (HarperCollins/William Morrow), a hopeful follow-up to his 2011 best seller, The Bond: Our Kinship With Animals, Our Call To Defend Them, Pacelle explores how innovative entrepreneurs, Fortune 500 CEOs, and scientists are rallying around this social movement and leading us forward by eliminating cruel historic practices. Pacelle recently met with Whole Foods cofounder and co-CEO John Mackey, a pioneer and leader in animal welfare, to talk about this new movement. They spoke about companies they admire, the next practical steps, and exciting predictions for the future.

104  vegasmagazine.com

Is there a sea change under way in how businesses large and small engage with animals? Wayne Pacelle: I see an enormous change at work in our relationship with animals. I started an animal advocacy group when I was in college, and at that point animal protection was a protest movement. When your ideas are viewed as on the margins, it’s easy for people to shunt them aside, to cast them as heretical or radical. Almost 30 years later, they’re at the center of the economy, and we’re really experiencing a period of punctuated change in all sectors of the animal-use economy. We’re seeing big changes in food and agriculture, we’re seeing big changes in science and animal testing, and enormous changes in fashion, wildlife management, entertainment. One reason that I’m happy to be here with John is that he’s been a leader in the corporate world in marrying our values with our commerce. When you disassociate values from business, you get terrible outcomes—things like slavery and child labor and environmental despoliation. This time you not only get better outcomes when businesses have their activities filtered through the lens of a good value system, but now there are great economic opportunities because the values have permeated society, and animal welfare is a universal value. John Mackey: I think values have always been in business. What’s changing is that consciousness is evolving. One hundred years ago, women didn’t have the right to vote; 150 years ago, almost half the United States still had legalized slavery. Our consciousness is evolving in all these different areas where we’re more aware. Part of it’s because, with the Internet and social media, things are much more transparent. The livestock animal business is probably about the least transparent part of the entire world economy: Animals on these factory farms are hidden from the public’s view. People used to be able to see cows grazing and they’d see chickens running

The humane economy: how To help More consumers are putting their beliefs about animal welfare into practice, and those choices are driving much of the change in the marketplace. Everyone can make a difference, says Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, who offers these tips: Vote with your dollars: Every time you buy something, you vote for or against animal cruelty with your money. Make conscious choices when buying food, cosmetics, and clothing. And join groups that help animals. Stop wasting food: According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Americans throw out up to 40 percent of their food (including 22 percent of animal products), despite enormous costs in the form of greenhouse gas emissions, energy input, and food production expenses. We could spare more than a billion animals in the US alone every year just by eliminating food waste. Live as if all life matters: Adopt pets or foster them. Pick up plastic waste on beaches and in parks. The greatest antidote to cruelty is an informed and active citizenry. Influence lawmakers: Contact officials at the local, state, and federal levels about pending animal welfare legislation. humanesociety.org

around, and now they’re all in these shut-in giant sheds. The public doesn’t see that. Wayne and I have jointly sponsored a documentary film called At the Fork that’s going to raise consciousness. It’s going to have an impact. WP: There are animal documentaries every week that I’m learning about. Look at what Blackfish did with SeaWorld. This was one of the toughest entertainment companies out there. It was able to fend off activist protests for many years, but this single documentary upended that business model for the company. In the wake of that film, I was able to negotiate a landmark deal with the new CEO of SeaWorld and get the company to pledge to end all captive breeding of orcas and sunset its use of these creatures. SeaWorld also committed to a raft of other reforms, including redoubling its commitment to rescue and rehabilitation and joining in our global advocacy campaigns against commercial whale and seal and shark finning. JM: It’s a great example of the thesis that we’re talking about. What Blackfish revealed is the exploitative nature of using animals as entertainment and how these animals are enslaved and abused. And now it has upended the business model, because the public is outraged. WP: If only 15 or 20 percent of people in America are very visibly agitated, they can create a lot of trouble. JM: More like 5 percent, even. So it is evolving very rapidly. We’re living in this revolutionary time where we as a people are becoming more conscious. Diets are changing; the way we relate to animals is changing. Social media in particular makes things move very rapidly. In the food business, I’ve never seen as much change as there is right now, from online delivery to ingredient meals like Blue Apron and Plated to full-meal solutions and food trucks. WP: And we have companies that are innovating, like Hampton Creek, which is providing a plant-based egg substitute that’s hidden in the product. The consumer doesn’t even know the difference. It’s a functional equivalent in terms of the taste and texture. It’s not inconceivable that in 30 or 40 years we can produce meat in a laboratory setting where the meat is an animal product but without the brain or the heart and very little in the way of a moral problem. How do these options become embraced by consumers? WP: You need innovation and entrepreneurs who can develop the product and then market it. But I think you also need time—the ideas take a while to seep in. They marinate in society, and as they do, these things become acceptable. Look at gay marriage. We did a ballot measure in California in 2008 to stop extreme confinement of animals on factory farms. We thought we were going to lose, but we won, and we got more votes than any citizen initiative in American history at the time. On that same ballot, voters in California, which is viewed as among the most progressive of states, passed a ban on gay marriage. So from 2008 to 2016, we’ve seen a complete change on that issue. JM: Society is always evolving simply because old people die and young people come in and reach the majority. Now 80 million millennials are in this society, bigger than boomers. Boomers are retiring, some of them are dying, and so increasingly that millennial generation, which is more interested in the very things we’re talking about, is having a greater and greater influence. WP: If you believe that animals matter, that has practical implications for daily behavior, and once you convince people to align their beliefs with their behavior, that’s when you have a market opportunity. You have companies that can take advantage of that consciousness, like Whole Foods, Hampton Creek, or Cirque du Soleil. Ringling Bros. was one of the fiercest opponents of animal protection, but they gave up their elephants because they did the surveys: The customers didn’t want the elephants traveling to 120 different cities a year, living on chains for 22 hours a day, and they knew that was not something they could invest in while retaining the brand strength of the company, so they changed, which is also why SeaWorld agreed to end any breeding of orcas in order to sunset their use and make the existing whales the last generation at their parks. There are alternative forms of attracting and entertaining crowds. Cirque du Soleil showed that you can have amazing theatrical productions involving human acrobats and feats of incredible physicality, and it’s just so superior. You don’t have any of the moral baggage that comes with orcas or elephants in captive settings. What other changes are happening in entertainment? WP: The film situation is incredible. With computer-generated imagery, we have an incredible revolution that can take the live animals out of the equation but still give viewers a rich and superior experience. When you think of the toughest movie in terms of representing animals, it would probably be Noah. [Director] Darren Aronofsky used CGI to create this incredible animal diversity, and it was vivid and alive and authentic. The Planet of the Apes movies are the high watermark for this. You don’t need to victimize chimpanzees. This is how social change works: You no longer have the movie industry blocking an effort to protect chimpanzees that are endangered in the

wild. There was always an exemption because the biomedical people wanted to use chimps in experiments, and the movie people wanted to use them, but now we have alternatives to using chimps in laboratories and in the movies. Chimpanzees [are listed as] endangered, and they have a highly protected status now. JM: “Doom and gloomers” are always projecting a problem out into the future, not understanding the continual creativity and innovation part. I get asked a lot by journalists, “What do you think the world’s going to be like in 10 years?” Ten years ago, let’s see: Tesla cars did not exist. If you go back 15 years ago, no one was using an iPod; no one was using a smartphone, and there was no Facebook, there was no Twitter. The point is, there’s continual innovation; there’s continual creativity. That’s basically the ultimate resource: limitless human creativity. We will solve our problems in ways that we can’t even foresee now. WP: We’re solving the problems quicker. JM: That’s partly because we’re so much better connected. Innovations are copied quicker. If Whole Foods did something 20 years ago, it would take years for [it] to show up anywhere else. And now when we do a new store, not only can we copy our own innovations; everybody else does, too. Who is leading this current evolution? WP: One thesis in my book is there’s really an ensemble cast of people who are driving this change. There are entrepreneurs, consumers who are more

In this excerpt from The Humane Economy: How Innovators and Enlightened Consumers Are Transforming the Lives of Animals, Wayne Pacelle argues that animal welfare is the next great frontier in America’s cultural consciousness. We are in the midst—much closer to the beginning than to the end, I believe—of an epic political, cultural, and economic realignment in the treatment of animals. Doing something about a moral problem requires first identifying it and then intentionally breaking old habits and conventions. Confronting terrible injustices— from slavery and child labor to segregation to gender discrimination—was a painful and necessary part of our American tradition. With the availability of information on the Web, and the transparency it brings, it’s harder now to sidestep these questions. Just as people are shaken from their comfort zone when they realize that a T-shirt from a well-known clothing company was stitched together in some hellish, overcrowded factory in Bangladesh, more of us are connecting our choices and purchasing practices when it comes to matters of animal cruelty. Exposing abuses goes a long way in prompting sellers to get their supply chains in order, even as it better informs their customer base. Smart businesses want to get ahead of controversy and avoid protests, boycotts, and social-media campaigns that target them. We are seeing transformations in all sectors of the animal-use economy, and we will see many more. Once resolve has set in to change for the better, it’s easier than ever to make it happen. It’s not a matter of sacrifice—just conscious, better choices. Enlarging our vocabulary from “whaling” to “whale watching”

is just one example of an emerging shift in the manner we humans regard animals— whether in the wild, on the farm, in laboratories, or in our homes. The society we have now is different from what it was 25 or 100 or 200 years ago, with revolutionary advances in commerce, banking, currency, energy exploration, global transport, information technology, and computing. How can we not have a commensurate revolution in our treatment of animals? How can we tolerate the misery that comes from whaling, factory farming, trapping, and cruel industries of every kind once we recognize a more vibrant economic path forward, producing jobs that are better to hold, goods that are better to have, and a society in the end that is better to live in, without unlighted places where cruel things are permitted? conscious and alert, scientists who are helping with that, occasionally politicians who show great leadership. You also have huge philanthropy at work. We’re an enormously wealthy society in terms of having a lot of resources out there, and you have billionaires willing to invest in these issues. You’ve got Paul Allen, who is trying to solve problems, and you’ve got titans of capitalism like Carl Icahn who are trying to solve problems. And then you have corporations adapting. They know that they’re going to be roadkill if they don’t adjust to the new realities. JM: I’m pretty wealthy, and one of the things that happens is that you have all your needs taken care of, so then it’s a question of: Do you just pile up money for money’s sake or do you invest that money in ways that help the world to become a better place? WP: David Duffield, who founded PeopleSoft, a Silicon Valley company, committed hundreds of millions of dollars to solving euthanasia in dogs and cats in the late 1990s. He was mocked by a number of people: Why would you put all of that money into that kind of enterprise when we have so many human problems? Now you have philanthropists coming out of the woodwork on these issues. JM: People are beginning to realize that government doesn’t really solve many problems. Instead you have these twin forces: economic business entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs. Whole Foods has started three foundations, and they’ve all been very impactful in a short amount of time. So you’re combining the nonprofit model with the business model, and sometimes these work together. WP: Part of that ensemble cast that I talked about driving the change are animal scientists and ethnologists who are teaching us more about animals. It wasn’t that long ago that the dominant animal behavior theory was that animals operate just by instinct, that they’re like machines in the wild who are on an endless task of food gathering, mating, predation, and defense. Now we know that animals have feelings, emotions. Elephants have burial rituals; chimpanzees have rituals to honor family members who have passed away. We see incredible problem-solving, from crows to dolphins. Once you see that behavior, you can’t think of them as just this thing or commodity. And I think this increase in understanding animal consciousness layers over this social reform movement. That’s why no industry that’s exploiting animals in a severe way is going to be immune from this movement. One area we haven’t talked about too much is the animal testing issue, [which] can be completely overtaken by different technologies. What do you foresee happening in the near future? JM: I’ll make a prediction: What is building is a scientific consensus around health. Although there’s a very strong vested interest in keeping people ignorant by the dairy industry, cattle and meat industry, and processed food industry, there’s a strong scientific consensus that is building that eating either none or only small quantities of animal foods leads to optimum longevity. The longest-living people that we know of are all plant eaters. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes—they all correlate very strongly with the more animal food you eat. Sometime over the next five to 10 years, I predict you’re going to see a scientific consensus come around—just like it took a long time for science to gather enough data to overthrow the propaganda machine that the tobacco industry was. WP: It takes activists and scientists and all of that together. JM: That’s what’s happening with food now. We have a healthcare crisis in America; we have an obesity crisis. Eighty percent of the healthcare money that we spend, which is bankrupting us, is due to diet and lifestyle. And it’s avoidable. You’re going to see this growing scientific consensus about how to solve our healthcare issues, which will be lifestyle shifts, [which] will correlate well with the humane economy, because it’s very interesting that the thing that will help solve our healthcare crisis and our obesity epidemic is basically living in a more humane fashion and not exploiting animals. The exploitation of the animals is not just harming the animal; it’s harming us. That’s what people don’t understand. WP: Absolutely. I really like the word “humane.” I chose it very intentionally because the root word of “humane” is “human,” and we’re the ones who are creating the problems, so we’re the ones that can solve the problems. John’s point is really important: It just so happens that when we’re better to animals, we have better outcomes throughout society. Companies are going to be more successful when they have a more animal-friendly sensitivity.

Fashion Forward One of the biggest changes in the luxury world centers on the use of fur, as more high-end fashion houses embrace cruelty-free alternatives thanks to innovations in technology and sustainability. The fur-free movement took a significant step forward in March, when the humane society of the United states and the Fur Free alliance, a coalition of 40 animal protection groups around the world, announced that the entire armani Group would be going fur-free beginning with the Fall/Winter 2016 collections. “Technological progress made over the years allows us to have valid alternatives at our [disposal] that render the use of cruel practices unnecessary,” says Giorgio Armani, who first met with Wayne Pacelle in Milan in 2009 to discuss his brand’s use of fur. “Pursuing the positive process undertaken long ago, my company is now taking a major step ahead.” Armani joins other leading houses that have turned away from fur, including hugo Boss, which just won the Humane Society’s Henry Spira Corporate Progress Award for its commitment to innovative, animalfriendly materials, and stella McCartney, the first and only luxury brand to be completely vegan, avoiding leathers, skins, and feathers, as well as fur. Other big-name designers to go fur-free include ralph Lauren, Tommy hilfiger, and Calvin Klein—and the ranks are growing.

THE STILL crafT, drafT & EaTS IN MIraGE IS BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS TO BRING A TRAIlERfull Of fuN TO THE STRIP.

Anyone who grew up celebrating little league victories at Carvel with an ice cream sundae in a plastic baseball cap can appreciate that a big part of appealing to a sports-loving crowd is serving up some nostalgia. For Clique Hospitality, the key element in its new Still Craft, Draft & Eats–aside from its more than two dozen 50-inch televisions–was installing a full-sized, pristine Airstream to turn out game-day food for an insatiable crowd. “It was 4 in the morning, and we had to cut out some walls–and parts of the ceiling–in the Mirage to get that thing in here,” says Clique partner Andy Masi. The old Revolution Lounge it replaced didn’t have a kitchen, and he envisioned street tacos, sliders, and cheese fries that you could order right from the trailer. Don’t expect a three-day boiled frank from this food truck, either. The chili cheese dog with crispy onions is about as long as the Airstream; addictive mini sliders are slathered with pimiento cheese; NY steak tips and fries come with roasted garlic Sriracha butter; and mini lobster rolls can be served hot or cold. More than 50 beers and some creative (and strong!) specialty cocktails keep things festive. And you’ll want to celebrate the game with one of those famous sundaes. SPACE GRAND OPENING

SHAPE SHIFT

Decades before SLS Las Vegas opened in summer 2014, the property at the corner of Sahara Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard—known since 1952 as the Sahara Hotel and Casino— had cemented its reputation as a magnet for visiting musicians ranging from Rat Packers to the Beatles. So when SLS announced its intention to turn its 20,000-square-foot nightclub Life into a 2,000-capacity live music venue called The Foundry, the decision signaled an obvious return to the property’s roots. “SLS is already Vegas’s home for live entertainment thanks to the Sayers Club, Foxtail Concert Series, and special performances at Foxtail Nightclub,” says Matt Minichino, the property’s vice president of nightlife and entertainment. “The Foundry really solidifies that.” Revamping the venue involved the addition of an acoustic sound system and a 25-foot-by-65-foot stage; Life’s visual elements, bars, and VIP seating, meanwhile, survived the makeover. “We aim to program 50 or more artists annually, spanning everything from rock and pop to EDM and hip-hop,” Minichino adds. With acts like Lil Wayne, Santigold, and Todd Rundgren on deck, attracting an audience shouldn’t be a problem. SLS Las Vegas, 702-761-7617; foundrylv.com

SPACE GREAT OUTDOORS

IN BLOOM! THE STRIP’S FIRST PUBLIC P PUTS DOWN ROOTS BETWEEN NEW YORK-NEW YORK AND MONTE CARLO.

Evoking the city’s origin as a shady green oasis in the desert is the Strip’s newest addition, The Park.

Some might say the Strip has it all, and our multiple roller coasters, 50-ton bronze lion, and scale replica of the Eiffel Tower do little to dispute that notion. This April, what’s perhaps the final piece of the puzzle—a publicly accessible green space—joined the mix in the form of MGM Resorts International’s long-awaited Park. Bridging the gap between New York-New York and the Monte Carlo, and providing a lush entryway to MGM’s new T-Mobile Arena, The Park incorporates one-of-a-kind water and shade features, eateries (think the Southern California-based Bruxie and the pared-down gastropub Beerhaus), and public art pieces, like Marco Cochrane’s 40-foottall sculpture of a woman in motion, Bliss Dance. The main attraction, though, is the greenery itself, chosen to mimic the natural palette of the desert. Hours were spent handpicking “each and every plant, from the smallest agave to the largest mesquite tree,” says Jerry van Eyck, founding principal at the landscape architecture and urban design firm !melk, which spearheaded the project. “Las Vegas in its earliest years was a shady green oasis with spring water bubbling up from the earth, and in a sense, our push for authenticity has created a new oasis.” 3782 Las Vegas Blvd. S. , 702-693-7275; theparkvegas.com

hakkasan group adds a shiny new jewel to its arsenal.

Aesthetically speaking, Hakkasan Group’s glitzy new Vegas venture, Jewel at Aria, is a far cry from the nightlife group’s splashy Caesars Palace megaclub, Omnia. Behind both spaces, though, is the New York-based firm Rockwell Group, whose designers

went the opposite direction in nightclub design, toning down the former Haze Nightclub to focus on a feeling of intimacy within the 24,000-square-foot room. “We’re trying to create an experience that should feel very different from all the other clubs we

know and see,” says Shawn Sullivan, partner and studio leader at Rockwell Group. For clubgoers, that experience begins at the space’s tunnel-like entrance, now outfitted with a series of bronze arches and an antique chandelier, which progresses into a gem-

toned main room whose pièce de résistance—a sweeping central staircase— connects to an upper-level mezzanine featuring five themed VIP boxes. “We really wanted this to feel like a cool grotto or speakeasy-type room with deep reds, rich woods, and

even a lot of custom light fixtures you’d imagine seeing in a subterranean space in a great urban city,” Sullivan says. “It’s all about mystery—Jewel as the kind of place that doesn’t reveal itself too easily.” Opens May 19, 702-590-8000; jewelnightclub.com

SPACE GAMING

GAME ON

It’s an endless quest, finding the best new spot to Insta-document your time in Vegas. One top contender in this sought-after category: playing pool at Steve Wynn’s own white-lacquer Blatt Billiards table shipped from his Manhattan penthouse, or sipping a “Dom-a-Rita” nearby—a Don Julio Reposado margarita topped with Dom Perignon freshly poured from a decanter whose contents, which serve five, cost $1,200. You can accomplish both at the new Encore Players Club, located strategically across from Surrender Nightclub and Encore Beach Club, Andrea’s restaurant, and VDKA bar. Of course, you wouldn’t be the first: Recently spotted celebs include Charlotte McKinney, Nick Cannon, Diplo, Skrillex, DeMarcus Ware, Rob Gronknowski, and Holly Holm. The thinking behind the new gaming space, says Wynn Las Vegas Chief Operating Officer Sean Christie, was to appeal to a younger demographic who finds the old casino format—rows of table games and slot machines—a little timeworn. The new lounge space breaks that mold with Suzo Happ InteractivePro tables alongside the roulette, craps, and blackjack, and of course those cocktails. (The $475 Veuve-a-Rita is a less pricey but still fabulous alternative to the Dom version.) Or just settle in to watch sports on two-dozen 56-in HD televisions (order from a special menu from Wazuzu on major game days). Between you and the beautiful people, it’s the place to be seen (and to prove it to the folks back home). Encore Players Club, 702-770-7300; daily 8 PM–4 AM; wynnsocial.com

Sure, auto startup Faraday Future’s FFZERO1 selfdriving car is turning the auto market on it head. But what does the company’s plan to build a $1 billion plant mean to the North Las Vegas economy? We turned to Nick Sampson, senior VP of manufacturing, and Dag Reghorn, VP of manufactur-

ing, for answers. How will Faraday Future change the North Las Vegas landscape? Dag Reghorn: We are building a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at the Apex Industrial site in North Las Vegas, which will be home to production of our future vehicles. The facility

will demonstrate our commitment to sustainability and renewable energy. We intend to bring 4,500 new jobs to support the facility and growth of the local economy. The State of Nevada’s Economic Impact study projects there will be approximately $85 billion in economic impact (indirect

People have called your car a “Tesla killer.” What do you think of that? Sampson: We aren’t focused on the competition. The industry will benefit from more players. We don’t think that today’s cars meet today’s needs—there is an opportunity to move the industry forward.

Boutique call Competing with all the serviCes and amenities on the strip is tough for residential Communities. their answer: game rooms... spas... soCial nights... and even a “Cruise direCtor.” By Andy WAng

Life can feel like a luxurious getaway every day if you move into the right Las Vegas building. Residential communities all over the city are ready to compete with Strip resorts and even cruise ships as they raise the stakes for amenities and service. For two of its perkpacked condo buildings, developer DK Las Vegas has enlisted lifestyle director Evelyn Connors to create events like the monthly wine tastings at One Las Vegas (theonelv.com). “I have seen many new connections made and friendships forged at these events,” says

122  vegasmagazine.com

Connors, who welcomes it when she’s compared to Julie McCoy, the cruise director from TV’s The Love Boat. “At our last Wine Night, an owner who just moved in mentioned she had some trepidation about attending because she didn’t know anyone. She was pleasantly surprised and relieved to find that everyone was nice and approachable.” It also helps social interactions when you’re in a building like One Las Vegas (located on the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard) with poolside cabanas, a movie theater, a two-story fitness center and a

sports lounge with billiards, table tennis and video games. At the Ogden (ogdenlv.com), Connors also takes advantage of neighborhood hot spots during her Bite Out gatherings when residents visit a Downtown restaurant together. On-site amenities and easy access to bars and restaurants is also a big part of the allure of Downtown Summerlin, where The Calida Group is developing the Constellation (constellation living.com) rental complex. “We really wanted to make it like a boutique hotel,” says Eric Cohen, managing director of

The Calida Group. “Of course, there’s a really nice gym, game room, treatment room and tanning room, but the demographic of the residents will also require certain services.” Through an on-site concierge and an app, renters can arrange restaurant reservations, show tickets or a car and driver. “We can get their dry cleaning, car washing done, grocery delivery,” Cohen says. “Anything you want to have done, we’re going to do for you.” At Elysian West (elysian west.com), The Calida Group’s new rental community on Jerry

Tarkanian Way, there will be a 12,000-square-foot clubhouse with a 4,000-square-foot-gym offering rock climbing and boxing, Cohen says. Other amenities include bocce ball, 4½ acres of green space, a children’s playroom, a guest suite for overnight visitors and a 24-hour self-check-out “micro market” where residents can grab healthy sandwiches and shakes. “We say it’s ‘on campus,’” Cohen says. “You never have to leave campus if you don’t want to.” So why not stay for an on-site screening instead of going out to the movies?

LIVING LAS VEGAS

POOL QUEUES

As temperatures heat up in Sin City, scores of Vegas women battle it out for seasonal spots at some of the Strip’s hottest pool and beach clubs, but the hiring process actually begins in winter with pageant-style casting calls that have been known to attract “thousands of candidates,” says Joe Bravo, director of nightlife and daylife at Hard Rock Hotel, home of the notorious pool party Rehab. When you consider the benefits of the job—namely hundreds of dollars in tips per shift—that number doesn’t seem so unrealistic. The stakes climb even higher, though, when Bravo reveals that only 250 applicants are hired each season. We sat in on one of Rehab’s open casting calls, observing the action as hundreds of bikini-clad contenders split into groups of 10 for photo shoots and “interviews” before a panel of six Hard Rock executives. Each rapid-fire convo consisted of just four basic elements—the candidate’s name, schedule, prior experience, and a quick twirl—so making an impression in less than two minutes was key. “At the end of the day, personality and charisma are important, but that’s not everything,” Bravo says. “Our team members need to possess a good mix of hard work, quirkiness, and the ability to read a guest.” The first two minutes are the hardest.
