ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL MARKS 20 YEARS WITH THREE DAYS OF MUSIC— AND MAGIC—IN THE DESERT. BY TESS EYRICH

From Elvis Presley’s hipshaking rock ’n’ roll in the 1950s to the explosive growth of electronic dance music (EDM) over the past decade, Las Vegas has long had a hand in transforming musical subcultures into mainstream phenomena. Need proof? Consider

8 VEGASMAGAZINE.COM

the largest EDM festival outside of Europe, Insomniac Events’ Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), which celebrates its 20th anniversary and fifth year in Vegas this June. Since relocating from Los Angeles to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2011, the high-octane fest

has generated an astounding $1.3 billion in profits, drawn more than 1.7 million people here— including 405,000 in 2015 alone—and become an unlikely pillar of the local arts scene in the process. Part of its success stems from its inclusiveness; much like Vegas itself,

EDC offers something for everyone, even if you’re not necessarily there for the music. You can brake for Day-Glo tattoos at a pop-up paint bar or accessorize your ensemble—or lack thereof—at a braceletmaking station. Unleash your inner child in a

VIP ball pit (yes, that’s a thing) or flex your adult muscles by getting legally married in an Insomniacbranded chapel. As always, we don’t care why you came—we’re just happy you’re here. June 17–19. Las Vegas Motor Speedway; electric daisycarnival.com

FEATURES 89 // ART OF THE CITY In Vegas, artist Sush Machida’s brilliantly colored Pop murals and unapologetic East-meets-West fun fusion style put his imprint on the city; in LA, New York, Boston, and beyond, local artists paint the national landscape.

102 // NATIONAL TREASURE Archetypes of equestrian style—hard-wearing jods and haughty jackets juxtaposed with spirited silks and sweet silhouettes—continually inspire modern designers, such as Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Miu Miu, Brunello Cucinelli, MaxMara (and so many more). That redefined embrace of glamour and guts, we affectionately call “luxe ranch dressing.”

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF

With Yigal Azrouel before his show at Wynn Collection.

The tension between the glamour of Las Vegas and the desert landscape we inhabit was recently thrown into high relief for me when I was stung by one of our famously poisonous bark scorpions while on my way out the door to a gala event I’d looked forward to all year. That I was wearing white sequins while I hopped around in pain— wondering whether I should still go to the event (really?)—seemed like such an entertaining allegory for desert living. Until my arm went numb. The upside, for you sunny optimists: Israel’s deathstalker and Africa’s fat-tailed scorpion are considered more lethal. And I sought medical attention looking as cute as possible. But then, I’m often reminded of the unlikely relationship between this city and its desolate environment, which really always belonged to my friend, the now-defunct scorpion.

I recently drove out near the Jean Dry Lake to see Ugo Rondinone’s newly erected Seven Magic Mountains, the towering neon hoodoos that cut a vivid profile against the desert sky (read more about them on page 52). On the way, I passed a billboard featuring the work of last year’s Art of the City cover star, JK Russ, a collage that combines faux and fabulous with natural landscape and cultural landmarks—part of the new ArtPop Street Gallery series to promote the arts in Las Vegas. This year’s cover artist, Sush Machida, similarly mashes consumerism with nature and tradition. It’s a conceit that works for us, even if we occasionally have to metabolize a neurotoxin to fully appreciate it. Enjoy our summer art issue!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Six years ago, I took on Vegas magazine as publisher when I was working at its then parent company, Greenspun Media Group, as a group publisher. When Janie Greenspun Gale recently approached me about coming back to Vegas, now published by GreenGale Publishing, I didn’t even hesitate. The company’s ownership may have changed, but I have felt that I was coming home to the family and colleagues I admire and who inspire me. Vegas the city has evolved since then, as has Vegas the magazine. The refreshed editorial content and design reflect the cultural changes in the city, and being part of that will always be exciting for me. Working in advertising and publishing in Las Vegas, as I have for 30 years, is about keeping pace with the

incredible speed with which new concepts open here. This summer, the city is abuzz with the recent star-studded openings of Intrigue at Wynn and Jewel at Aria. Baz Lurhmann’s cabaret mashup, BAZ—Star Crossed Love, comes back to Vegas, at Palazzo. New dining options—from Clique Hospitality (four in Red Rock and Green Valley Ranch in only a few months!) and Tao Group’s Beauty & Essex in Cosmopolitan—are making our jobs delicious. And we’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of Red Rock all year long. There’s a lot to celebrate this year, and coming back home is just the beginning.

LOVE STORY CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S THE BEATLES LOVE CAPS OFF 10 YEARS IN VEGAS WITH A CREATIVE OVERHAUL.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT BEARD (TEXTURE); LAWRENCE K. HO/LOS ANGELES TIMES VIA GETTY IMAGES (PERFORMER)

BY TESS EYRICH

To hear Dominic Champagne speak about The Beatles Love, you might think he’s describing something more akin to a religious awakening than a smash-hit Cirque du Soleil production. Champagne, who co-created the show a decade ago with the Beatles’ legendary producer, the late Sir George Martin, and Martin’s son Giles, often refers to Love in spiritual terms, describing the show as a “surreal, psychedelic communion” with its circular stage as the altar. As Champagne and Martin ready to toast 10 years of the show this July, its disciples will enjoy a reborn Love enhanced by heightened sound and visual elements—think reworked costumes, hand-drawn projections, and never-before-seen archival footage of the band—as well as an entirely new number choreographed around the Fab Four’s 1963 hit “Twist and Shout.” Creative evolution might be inevitable, but for Champagne, working with the Beatles’ catalog is an undertaking that will never lose its shine. “Their music reflects a great humanity, an adventure people had together,” he remarks. “I’m not just saying those guys were the apostles of peace and love in the ’60s, but they were part of this great wave of youth, energy, opening horizons, traveling around the world, being chased by girls—all things that continue to make people feel good.” The Mirage, 702-7927777; cirquedusoleil.com

THE JIM HENSON COMPANY ROLLS ITS OVER-16 PUPPET UP! UNCENSORED INTO VENETIAN. By John Katsilometes

You never know what these puppets will do next. That is the thread running through Puppet Up! Uncensored at Venetian. Imagine the improv of Whose Line Is It Anyway, the naughty tenor of Avenue Q, and the unmistakable personality of the Muppets. “It’s not always easy to describe,” says the show’s co-creator Brian Henson, who helms the company named after his father. “It’s sort of like The Matrix.” Disney owns the Muppets these days, but the 60 or so characters onstage summon the classic characteristics of Jim Henson’s originals. Puppet Up! advances the cause by bringing a half-dozen comic puppeteers to the stage to perform with their puppet partners in full view. Host and co-creator Patrick Bristow takes suggestions from the audience and directs the comics to select from a gallery of puppets. A characteristic topic is “My first prostate exam,” which was once called out during a show in Pasadena. In another, a scene advised about the do’s and don’ts of, ahem, gland handling in public (thus the age suggestion). As Bristow says: “We like to think of it as irreverent and hilarious, impressive, and performed by these uniquely talented performers.” And the puppets! Don’t forget them. Begins July 21, Sands Showroom, Venetian, 702-414-9000

seeing double nic jonas teams up with his longtime pal demi lovato for their future now tour. by tess eyrich

Nick Jonas is the first to admit it’s downright “crazy to think about” just how long he’s known his closest friend and fellow pop singer, Demi Lovato. The former child actors turned best-selling musicians, who met on the set of Disney Channel’s smash-hit film Camp Rock nearly 10 years ago, have remained confidants and collaborators throughout their rollercoaster ride to superstardom. Now the cofounders of their own label, Safehouse Records, the duo will hit the stage at MGM Grand Garden Arena in August for the Vegas installment of their co-headlined Future Now tour, a cross-country extravaganza supporting Lovato’s Safehouse-released fifth studio album, Confident, and Jonas’s latest effort, Last Year Was Complicated, which debuted in June. Before landing in Vegas— where some of their favorite hangouts include SW Steakhouse, XS, Hakkasan, and Shadow Creek Golf Course—we chatted with Jonas and Lovato, both 23, about balancing friendship with creative success. You’ve known each other for almost a decade. Which qualities in each other are you most inspired by? NICK JONAS: I think one

“Demi anD i Definitely have a major influence on each other anD have for a long time.” –nick jonas

of Demi’s best qualities is the fact that she’s fearless and always willing to tell the truth and be honest, in her work and as a person. DEMI LOVATO: I tend to want to rest and be more of a homebody, so I really admire Nick’s drive in general and his excitement to go out and explore the cities we go to. What inspired you to found your own label, Safehouse Records? NJ: We kind of looked at each other a couple of years ago and said we each had our own journey with not feeling safe enough to create, and as an artist you have to be vulnerable to do your best work. It’s about a community of people feeling comfortable to release things they want to release. DL: Safehouse is about creating an environment in which the artist feels supported emotionally. It feels great to be building that—for us and for other musicians. Has founding Safehouse also made you more confident in your songwriting? DL: I think, as with anything, life experiences inspire songwriting, and a lot has happened in the past few years. NJ: Right—we’ve both been making music for a long time, and our music has evolved as we have. And especially now with Safehouse, we love being able to have creative control of everything we’re doing. It’s important for us to be authentic to ourselves in our music. August 13. MGM Grand Garden Arena, 866-7407711; ticketmaster.com

Last year may have been complicated, but when Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato team up in Vegas in August, all we’ll be thinking of is Future Now.

Glimpse my ride! The Liberace Garage houses eight of Mr. Showmanship’s glittery carriages— including this star-spangled Bicentennial Rolls Royce, a 1952 Silver Dawn used for the “Liberace Show ‘76.”

It’s safe to say Liberace will never be associated with moderation, and while Vegas’s original Liberace Museum may have closed in 2010, April welcomed the arrival of a new landmark dedicated to celebrating one of the sequinbedecked singer’s most ostentatious objects of affection: his collection of restored classic cars.

Opened as an extension of Vegas’s Hollywood Cars Museum, the 5,000-square-foot Liberace Garage currently showcases eight legendary automobiles used in Mr. Showmanship’s stage acts, including a 1956 Rolls-Royce Phantom V Landau, a crystal-studded roadster he once drove onto the Radio City Music Hall

stage, and a vintage London taxi. “My personal favorite is the 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V Sedanca de Ville by James Young,” says Jonathan Warren, chairman of the 40-yearold Liberace Foundation for the Creative and Performing Arts, which spearheaded the project’s assembly. “She’s the only one of her kind ever built,

and while some RollsRoyce enthusiasts love her, purists attack Liberace for covering her with etched mirror tiles. In reality, nobody knows where Liberace got the car, but we do know it was horribly neglected when he obtained it. In 1962 Swiss artist Jean Tinguely arrived in Las Vegas, assembled sculptural contraptions with items from a local dump, then exploded them with dynamite in Jean Dry Lake, just 30 minutes south of Las Vegas proper. The site-specific art piece, Study for an End of the World No. 2, drew national journalists to document the event. And although the art piece was gone nearly as quickly as it arrived, the artist’s sardonic commentary on pervasive material culture would live on in art history. Now in 2016, travelers are pulling off Interstate 15 to get a closer look at the massive, primitive-looking rock totems painted Day-Glo colors just erected near the same dry lake, a contemporary art installation critiquing Las Vegas-style simulacra by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone. The seven stacks of painted boulders, each weighing around 40,000 pounds, stand 30 feet tall just off Las Vegas Boulevard (10 miles south of St. Rose Parkway), a mammoth testament to the reality of the unnatural in contemporary society. Coproduced by Reno’s Nevada Museum of Art and New York’s Art Production Fund, the $3.5 million project sitting on public land will be removed in two years, and all trace of it (including the parking space) will be gone. One of the totems will become part of the MGM Resorts International art collection. Aria is one of the project’s major donors. But before that happens, millions

MIX Master CoCktail kingpin tony abou-ganim embraCes a new role as head of t-mobile arena’s drinks program.

Vegas cocktail guru Tony Abou-Ganim was the natural choice to create the drinks program for the city’s first major arena; the Scratch Margarita can be ordered on draught, or, for suite-dwellers, in a DIY kit with booze, mixers, and bar tools. How suite it is!

When Tony Abou-Ganim landed in Vegas in 1998 to helm the beverage department at a brand-new resort called Bellagio, he couldn’t have predicted he’d end up making the city his permanent home base. “I thought I’d be here for maybe two years,” Abou-Ganim says. “Now I can’t imagine living anywhere else.” Since then, he’s had a hand in cocktail menus up and down the Strip—including that of Libertine Social, the Mandalay Bay restaurant he’s currently developing in partnership with award-winning chef Shawn McClain—authored books like The Modern Mixologist and Vodka Distilled, and even launched his own line of signature bar tools. Abou-Ganim’s most challenging project yet, however, involved linking up with Levy Restaurants to develop a custom beverage program for MGM Resorts International’s new T-Mobile Arena. Artisanal carved ices, punch bowl services, and Vegas-themed cocktails like the venue’s signature drink, the Atomic Fizz (Grey Goose vodka, Aperol, prickly pear and Eureka lemon juices, and agave nectar), form the foundation of the lineup, but Abou-Ganim emphasizes the menu’s flexibility, adding that guests can look forward to a range of one-time-only concoctions tailored to enhance special events. “The beverage program at T-Mobile Arena is a living entity,” he says. “It’s meant to grow, but always from a fresh, handcrafted base.” T-Mobile Arena, 702-6921300; t-mobilearena.com

Fans of Stella McCartney’s Miracle dress have cause to celebrate this summer—the famed UK designer has reinterpreted her curvemaking, color-blocked design made famous by Kate Winslet into one of the seven “stories” in her debut swim collection. “It’s a celebration of a woman’s body,” says McCartney, 44, of the body-conscious illusion design. “As a house we really do cater to everyone; all women, all ages, all sizes. This collection is truly inspired by women, and for women to wear it.” Rounding out the collection, available this July, are swimsuits in neoprene and mesh, Olympic-inspired stripes, crochet, the citrus prints first seen in Stella McCartney’s ready-to-wear collection, giraffe and other patterns, and “timeless basics.” The one- and two-piece suits come in different styles such as one-shoulder, triangle, or bandeau tops, and highwaisted, fold-down, or tie-side briefs (prices for separates, one-pieces, and cover-ups range from $80 to $324). “I just want to make women feel their best all of the time, so I sought to design pieces that tick all of the boxes, that give you confidence, that accentuate the most beautiful parts of every woman’s body and technically deliver on fit and durability.” Swimwear was a natural next step for the always-indemand Londoner, who has found enormous success not only in runway and ready-towear but with lingerie and athletic wear, too—namely her decade-long collaboration with Adidas. “I think it is an incredible area for us as a brand to work in,” says McCartney of her expansion into swim. “On a whole, it’s about all things summer, all things female, and just really loving yourself—taking the time to just celebrate who you are as a woman.” Saks Fifth Avenue, Fashion Show, 702733-8300; saks.com

BEFORE AN INTIMATE SHOWING OF PIECES FROM HIS LATEST COLLECTIONS AT WYNN COLLECTION, WE CAUGHT UP WITH YIGAL AZROUEL OVER BREAKFAST.

It’s good to see you in Las Vegas, and making a store appearance. I love to connect with people, and there’s nothing like Vegas. People come here to celebrate something, and it all feels luxurious. We’ll see some of your pre-fall collection today. How do you treat pre-fall? For pre-fall you have to be careful. I love fur and layers, but how can you wear something like that in Vegas? We treat it super-light, but with fall textures and new techniques. I travel a lot to Italy to produce my own fabric, so you’ll see even [laser-cut] lace we developed. The fall collection is about dark and light, using the motif of the black rose. We all have the two sides—for me, there’s the dark, but the light is always there. Your clothing has developed a real celebrity following. I’m not about following a trend, or celebrity. You have to stay true to what your aesthetic is. I’m close to Gwyneth Paltrow. A few years ago, I went to her house for breakfast —we had a friend in common—and I started talking to her and she didn’t know who I was, and then she went red, and said, “Oh my gosh, I’ll show you how many clothes I have of yours. I bought the collection!” I don’t make clothes with celebrities in mind—it’s more important for me to know the person and her story.

UNCOMMON SCENTS PARISIAN PERFUME HOUSE CREED UNVEILS A SPARKLING GLASS BOUTIQUE INSIDE THE FORUM SHOPS AT CAESARS.

The Vegas welcoming committee turned out in full force for the debut of cult-favorite fragrance brand Creed’s second freestanding boutique in North America, a glass-and-whitelacquer wonderland inside The Forum Shops at Caesars. It’s not hard to understand why—after all, scoring the latest collectible fragrances from the dynastic perfume house, which since the 1700s has furnished a variety of elite patrons (King George III, Grace Kelly) with custom scents of their own, can morph into an exercise in patience as soon as those same scents are temporarily archived or discontinued. “We’ve been handcrafting fragrances for royal houses and clients for more than 250 years,” Creed’s seventh-generation perfumer, Erwin Creed, says of the brand’s enduring celebrity clout. At the Vegas boutique, admirers can peruse an expansive selection of some of the brand’s most coveted scents, including Fleurissimo and Millesime Imperial, as well as newer offerings like Royal Princess Oud and Aventus for Her (the eagerly anticipated companion to Creed’s best-selling men’s fragrance Aventus) which is set to launch in August. “Aventus for Her opens with notes of Egyptian green apple, pink berries, Indonesian patchouli, and Italian bergamot,” Creed says. “You immediately feel awake with the first impression—I think our clients are going to be very excited about this fragrance.” Count us in. Cabaret on Display

by tess eyrich

What can we expect to see at the Las Vegas Convention Center’s new Folies Bergère exhibit? A diverse range of pieces. When we talk about cabaret costumes, usually the first things that come to people’s minds are our famous showgirl outfits with the

74  vegasmagazine.com

feather headdresses and bejeweled bras, but another large component is character costumes. Typically these costumes still have quite a bit of sex appeal, but they were themed. Any personal favorites? One of the character costumes I’ve included is

a skimpier version of something that Marie Antoinette might’ve worn back in the day—it dates back to 1980. I’ve also included a number of rare boots that were used in the late 1960s and early ’70s. Pieces produced prior to 1975 are a lot more rare than ones made after

1975 because they were designed in Paris by a man named Michel Gyarmathy, then shipped over for us to use in Vegas. What do you hope people take away from the show? That the cabaret genre is entirely unique to itself, and it really hasn’t changed

much since it was first introduced in Europe in the late 1800s. The pendulum always seems to come back to feathers, fishnets, and rhinestones, right? Through January 2017. Las Vegas Convention Center, 702-892-0711; lvcva.com

In a city where major deal-making, social negotiations, and some of the most important fashion moments of the summer all happen poolside, we take our pool wear seriously. But in Las Vegas, of course, the pool vibes aren’t one size fits all. “In the Las Vegas pool scene you get everything from the craziness of Ibiza to the

refined luxury of Lake Como,” says fashion stylist Christie Moeller, whose site, icanstyleu. com, is an invaluable resource for the fashioncrisis-prone. “To avoid any pool fashion faux pas, keep your style on-point with the vibe of each pool; after all, if people are talking and whispering, it should be because you did

something very right— not very wrong.” And don’t be that girl wandering drunk through the casino floor in a bikini and bare feet. Moeller reminds, “Most resorts require you to have some form of a cover-up while walking through the hotel to the pool. So keep it classy on the inside then go wild when you hit the pool.”

Great things happen at Desert Springs Hospital! Shaunda Clark is a young mother who enjoys spending time with her family. “Not too long ago, I was afraid I wouldn’t be here,” she said. A viral infection caused her to go into cardiogenic shock and her heart stopped pumping. Doctors inserted a heart pump that took over for the muscles in her heart. The pump remained in place for five days, giving her heart time to rest so that it could recover and beat again on its own. “Desert Springs Hospital is second to none. No one gave up on me. Doctors identified what was wrong with me quickly; nurses sat with me all night to make sure I was all right; therapists helped me learn to walk and talk again; even the housekeeping staff made sure I was comfortable.” Today, Shaunda’s heart is operating normally and she is back to doing the things she loves most … especially spending time with her family.

ART of the CITy 2016

This year, our exclusive and unique Art of the City portfolio presents a true celebration of the exceptional talent and diversity of our nation’s artists. In what has become one of the most exciting events in our GreenGale Publishing calendar, the 2016 lineup represents the best, the boldest, and the buzziest from each of our 11 cities. From Boston to New York City and the Hamptons, to Washington, DC, and Philadelphia, Chicago and Miami, Los Angeles, Aspen, Las Vegas, and Austin, we are showcasing this

spectacular array of artists in each of our magazines, on our covers, and through a series of exclusive events around the country, designed to connect our readers and communities with America’s art superstars. In addition—and to underscore our commitment to art awareness in our cities—this year’s featured artists have donated select works to charities to help provide much-needed support. Twyla Tharp said, “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” Now, on your mark, get set… go!

LAS VEGAS

SUSH MACHIDA WITH HIS BRILLIANTLY COLORFUL MURALS AND UNAPOLOGETIC EASTMEETSWEST FUN FUSION STYLE, THIS POP MURALIST HAS PUT HIS OWN STRONG IMPRINT ON THE CITY. BY KRISTEN PETERSON WHEN REVIEWING THE WORK OF SUSH MACHIDA IN 2009, Los Angeles Times art critic David Pagel hailed his pieces this way: “Pop art never looked more scorchingly gorgeous or wickedly Zen.” It was the perfect summation of the Japanese-born painter, who creates waves and clouds like a wild Zen master, minimalist forms that are strong, soft, powerful, and light, all at the same time. His hard-edged abstract works bring Japanese woodcut traditions into the contemporary realm with a sense of ease and flamboyant joy. Brightly hued tigers represent Japanese symbols of luck in the same East-meets-West fashion. Colorful fish are common subjects, as are the accompanying air fresheners, perfume bottles, and cigarette packs that offer humorous commentary on their size and smell. The son of a professional competitive bike rider in Japan, Machida moved to the United States in his 20s, using college as his excuse to skateboard and snowboard in Utah. According to local lore, renowned art critic Dave Hickey first noticed Machida’s zany green hair—and then, of course, his talent—while Machida was an undergraduate at Utah State University, and introduced him to the idea of being a professional artist. “I didn’t know that anybody was making a living making art,” Machida recalls. He went on to attend UNLV as an MFA student under Hickey. In the 15 years he’s lived and worked here, the 43-year-old artist has made a strong impression on Las Vegas. Of four recent public art commissions, three are in town, including a large-scale mural with Tim Bavington on Downtown’s Emergency Arts building at Sixth and Fremont Streets and 2,000 square feet of peaceful and happy murals for Hope Corridor at Clark County’s Child Haven, whose work—protecting children from abuse—he is passionate about. Like his paintings, his mural in the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas consists of panels, a traditional style of art in Japan where space is scarce. He’s one of 17 Las Vegas artists featured in the Nevada Museum of Art’s “Tilting the Basin: Contemporary Art of Nevada” exhibit opening in August in Reno. He’s making his mark in other ways, too: Machida is donating a work of art through Vegas’s Art of the City project to assist in the massive fundraising effort to build The Modern (themodernlv.org), a contemporary art museum, education center, and sculpture park in Downtown’s burgeoning arts neighborhood. “He’s a serious artist,” Hickey says. “He’s not just in it for the glory. [His work] is always kind of crazy, but it’s never too much, never more than you want. It’s just right—exquisite and graceful. It lives on the surface.” “Tilting the Basin” runs August 5–October 23; nevadaart.org. sushmachida.com

WASHINGTON, DC

RONALD B E VE RLY THE HOWARD UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR IS DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF PHOTOGRAPHERS BY LOOKING TO THE ART FORM’S PAST IN ORDER

When it comes to photographic techniques, Ronald Beverly, the head of the photography department at Howard University in Washington, DC, is a film purist— except when he isn’t. He grounds his own art—and insists that his students ground theirs—in an understanding of traditional practices, darkroom and all, even if 90 percent of the work he is shooting right now is digital. “I’m always accustomed to the complete loop from beginning to end, from image capture to presentation,” Beverly says. Consider Nature’s Avatar, a kaleidoscopic series of digital giclées (printed on canvas) that look like something Google’s DeepDream program might generate. They scan plainly as landscapes and vaguely as natural: rectilinear mandalas that emphasize form, pattern, and fractal geometry. Obviously, these are digital transformations. But Beverly’s black-and-white silver gelatin landscape prints are no less sharp and craggy. Still, the 56-year-old artist is clear with his students that he prizes large-format film photography over digital. “It’s about craftsmanship first, and your meaning and message later,” he says. (Or as he likes to describe the digital-versus-film divide, “The microwave is quicker, but the food doesn’t taste as good.”) In the end, his overarching theme remains the same. “My goal,” says Beverly, “is to bring to light what we can’t see.” Ronald Beverly’s work will be on display at the MGM National Harbor when it opens this fall. 7100 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill, 844-346-4664; mgmnationalharbor.com. boxlightstudios.prosite.com

NEW YORK CITY

LISA SCH U LTE THE NEON ARTIST IS TAKING A POPCULTURE MEDIUM AND BENDING IT INTO SOMETHING ENTIRELY UNEXPECTED.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BODE HELM

BY KARI MOLVAR

Lisa Schulte’s years of experience have taught her to “see” in light: “You just have to keep doing it... Then you have the natural feel to shape things within you,” says the neon artist, shown here with Untitled Wood Series #1 (2014). COVER, AT RIGHT: All Your Life You Were Only Waiting for This Moment to Arise (2015).

After a freak accident in childhood, Lisa Schulte lost her sight for three months. It was a moment that shaped the rest of her life. “One doesn’t take sight for granted when you get it back,” says the 60-year-old artist. “It changed my sense of light.” Now, as a visual artist known for her neon work, she’s constantly surrounded by an electric glow. “Many artists take a stab at using neon, but only a few in the world are true experts,” says Blair Clarke of New York’s Voltz Clarke Gallery, which will mount an exhibition of Schulte’s pieces this summer. Schulte is largely self-taught and came to neon through the event production industry—she had her own signage shop in Los Angeles, Nights of Neon, in the mid-’80s. “I just reached a point where I had so much experience in how glass works that I started creating three-dimensional sculptures with neon,” she says. These days, Schulte muses that she can literally “see” in neon—and she’s helping the next generation see it too, by donating a work of art to be auctioned for the artsmentoring nonprofit Free Arts NYC (freeartsnyc.org). “You just have to keep doing it, doing it, doing it,” she says of her work. “Then you have the natural feel to shape things within you.” “Summer Selections,” an exhibition featuring Schulte’s work, runs July 1–August 31 at Voltz Clarke Gallery, 141 E. 62nd St., Second Fl., 212933-0291; voltzclarke.com

MICHAE L DWECK THE SURFINSPIRED PHOTOGRAPHER RELEASES A HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEW EDITION OF HIS BELOVED BEACHCENTRIC TOME. BY KARI MOLVAR

When photographer Michael Dweck, 58, published The End: Montauk, N.Y., in 2004, an homage to the Hamptons’ surfing culture and sun-streaked landscape, the initial print run of 5,000 copies sold out in less than three weeks. Collectors will have another chance to grab the book this summer, though: In July, Dweck will publish 300 copies of a new edition of The End. The $3,000 clothbound volume includes 85 previously unpublished images, as well as an essay by photographer (and Montauk resident) Peter Beard and an 11-by-14-inch gelatin silver print (Surf’s Up, Adriana, or Lilla), numbered and signed. To celebrate its release and preserve the shorelines depicted in the pages, a portion of the proceeds of the book will go toward the Surfrider Foundation (surfrider.org), Oceana (oceana.org), and Splash (splash.org), which help maintain US waterways and beaches. For Dweck, the new edition is also a chance to expand on the book’s original narrative—the spellbinding allure of summer and surfing, and a way of life that’s fading away. “The work was my way of freezing Montauk from when I was a kid,” says Dweck, who grew up in Nassau County, Long Island, and began visiting the seaside community in the ’70s. “It was about a feeling—of what it’s like to be free, young, and 19 again.” The End: Montauk, N.Y. (Ditch Plains Press, $3,000) is available at ditchplainspress.com. michaeldweck.com

AN L.A. LEGEND ARTS ON. BY MICHAEL HERREN In the pantheon of postwar California Cool artists— adventurers with names such as Ruscha, Price, Bell, Altoon, Irwin, and Graham—Billy Al Bengston is the trickster god. He’s one thing; he’s its other—an entertaining introvert who’s naturally the life of any party but who’s also a natural in his studio, alone, a party of one. A self-proclaimed pistonhead who has surfed toes-on-the-nose and raced motorcycles for cash and glory—and who then translated this love of speedy sleekness and slick sheen into motifs and finishes in his paintings. Born in Dodge City, Kansas, at the height of the Depression, Bengston and his family settled in LA in the late 1940s, just in time for high school, where he developed a passion for ceramics before switching to painting. He then proceeded to have five solo shows at the famed Ferus Gallery on North La Cienega Boulevard between 1958 and 1963, and at age 82 he continues to strive to paint a pretty picture—noting, however, that his idea of a pretty picture might not be yours. “Painting, it’s like self-flagellation,” he says. “You sort of like it, and hope other people like what you did while you were beating yourself.” Bengston is donating a hand-colored monoprint, Untitled (1972), which will be auctioned on July 16 at Summer on Seventh, the annual LA fundraisercum-arts happening benefiting Inner-City Arts (innercityarts.org), a nonprofit that provides underserved youth in Los Angeles with access to free arts education. Bengston’s work is featured in “Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney’s Collection,” which runs April 27, 2016 through February 12, 2017, at the Whitney Museum of American Art, 99 Gansevoort St., New York, 212-570-3600; whitney.org. billyalbengston.com

MEG SALIGMAN THE CELEBRATED MURALIST HAS CREATED SOME OF THE CITY’S MOST ICONIC PUBLIC ARTWORKS. THIS SUMMER, SHE REIMAGINES TWO OF THEM. BY JOANN GRECO As the creator of such beloved Philadelphia images as Our Flag Unfurled, artist Meg Saligman has become an integral part of the vibrant cultural life that drew her to the city. Painted on the side of a warehouse near the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, the mural was an immediate response to the events of 9/11, but now Saligman, 50, is meticulously restoring Flag so it will be ready to welcome the thousands coming to Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention in July. Then she will turn her attention to a new Project HOME residence to serve the city’s homeless: More than 100,000 prayer ribbons from the public installation she created for Pope Francis’s historic visit to Philadelphia last September will form part of the building’s façade. Saligman’s oeuvre has grown to include private commissions in Mexico City, Ecuador, Tanzania, and a handful of American cities. Last year she completed her largest work ever, the 42,000-square-foot M.L. King Mural: We Will Not Be Satisfied Until... in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a richly hued tribute to an AfricanAmerican neighborhood. “I’m very proud of my body of work,” she says. “It’s a great feeling when I drive by one and can say, ‘I did that!’” megsaligman.com

Participating in Philly’s Mural Arts program offers Meg Saligman “three things I absolutely love: painting on a large scale, being outside, and working with people,” she says. Seen here, Common Threads, an eight-story mural she painted in 1998, features local high school students mirroring the poses of antique figurines. COVER, BOTTOM LEFT: Our Flag Unfurled (2001).

DICK CARTE R THE COLORADO ARTIST EXPLORES THE UNIVERSEONE BRUSHSTROKE AT A TIME. BY CHRISTINE BENEDETTI

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAWN O’CONNOR (CARTER); TONY PRIKRYL (MODERN MANDALA, YELLOW X MANDALA)

It’s been 40 years since artist Richard Carter was Herbert Bayer’s assistant in Aspen, but the Bauhaus architect and artist’s influence is clearly present in Carter’s newest series of works. “It’s in my blood,” he says of the modernist movement known for bold lines, stark shapes, and bright colors. Titled “Mandalas Considered,” Carter’s new exhibition is the fruit of two years of painting and drawing. “I got interested in the mandala, not in the spiritual way but in a formal way, the structure of it,” he says about the geometric pattern used to represent the universe in many Eastern cultures. A cofounder of the Aspen Art Museum, Carter, 70, is deeply rooted in the Aspen Valley’s arts scene, serving on the board of the Art Base, the nonprofit that will be the beneficiary of an Aspen Peak summer fundraiser where one of his pieces will be auctioned off. During a residency at Anderson Ranch Arts Center last summer, he was inspired by Takashi Nakazato’s studio and created three mandala series with the Japanese symbol for a cherry blossom at their center. “They’ve evolved over different ways in the past two years,” he says, “but they all have some reference to scientific notation.” The new series visibly transitions from complex, physics-centered pieces to modern, simplified, more abstract works. The same could be said of Carter himself. “Mandalas Considered” runs June 3–25 at The Launchpad in Carbondale, 76 S. Fourth St., 970-9631680; launchpadcarbondale.com. “Drawings” runs June 10–July 1 at the Art Base in Basalt, 99 Midland Spur, 970-927-4123; theartbase.org. richardcarterart.com

The mandalas of Dick Carter, seen in his studio, have grown simpler over the years but retain their grounding in natural structures, from cherry blossoms to subatomic particles. ABOVE: Modern Mandala (2015). COVER, AT LEFT: Yellow X Mandala (2014).

NICK CAVE THE PERFORMANCE ARTIST AND SOUNDSUIT INVENTOR TACKLES TOUGH SOCIAL ISSUES WITH HIS STUNNING FOUNDOBJECT CREATIONS.

A must-have for any contemporary art museum or top-level collector, Nick Cave’s instantly recognizable soundsuits—exuberant, brightly colored wearable sculptures adorned with everything from buttons and hair to toys and other found objects— have made the 57-year-old professor in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s fashion design department one of the most sought-after artists in the world. Although festive in spirit, the multimedia creations are rooted in a dark moment: the 1991 police beating of Rodney King after a high-speed car chase in Los Angeles. Soon thereafter, Cave found himself gathering twigs and constructing a kind of protective garment-sculpture that served as a prototype for what he later termed soundsuits. He has made more than 500 of them since. Cave, who grew up in rural Missouri and began his studies at the Kansas City (Missouri) Art Institute, is part of a growing trend of community engagement in which an artist becomes what he calls a “cultural change agent.” Whether it’s with his soundsuits, sculptures, installations, or community projects, Cave seeks to transport people into a contemplative, healing, and transformative realm. “I’m creating this space,” he says, “that allows one to imagine.” “Nick Cave: Until” opens at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art on October 16. 1040 Mass MoCA Way, North Adams, MA, 413-662-2111; massmoca.org. nickcaveart.com

PETE R TU NNE Y WITH HIS GIANT POLAROIDS COLLECTION, THE ARTIST, PHILANTHROPIST, AND ENTREPRENEUR IS CAPTURING MOMENTS AND CREATING TREASURE. BY JON WARECH

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN REUTER (TUNNEY)

Peter Tunney is living in the present. His famed Grattitude, The Time is Always Now, and Enough is Possible paintings hang around the world. “The overarching theme is that I hate that we’re getting older, I hate that time is slipping by,” he says. “I really love being here.” Tunney’s obsession with time is what makes his latest project, Giant Polaroids, so interesting. It involves a large Polaroid camera—one of only five made, manufactured in the late ’70s and used by Andy Warhol and Chuck Close—that produces huge 20-by-24-inch photos. But film for the camera is running out. The 55-year-old artist takes pictures of “whatever comes into my mind that day” and has partnered with the estate of photographer Bert Stern to shoot Stern’s photos of Marilyn Monroe, the last taken before she died. “You’re like nose to nose with Marilyn Monroe telling you, ‘Come and get me, baby,’” he says of the process. Of course, long after all the film for the giant camera is gone, Tunney’s work will still be making its mark. As part of Ocean Drive’s Art of the City initiative, he has agreed to donate a work to benefit Artists for Peace and Justice (apjnow.org), a nonprofit that addresses issues of poverty around the world. “If we ran out [of film] tomorrow, then c’est la vie,” he says. “It would just make me treasure these pictures more, and would make me think I should have done more Marilyns.” Tunney’s studio is located at 220 NW 26th St., Miami, 646-245-7904; petertunney.com What Peter Tunney (ABOVE RIGHT, artdirecting Mr. Brainwash at a Giant Polaroids shoot) calls “stuff that I treasure”—from Cap’n Crunch boxes to bleached-out beer cans to a childhood Lassie book—has a way of becoming part of his art, which may explain how his paint-smudged jeans wound up in the piece Cailin Double Exposed in My Jeans (2015) on Ocean Drive’s cover (LEFT). J E N NIFE R CHE NOWETH NO ONE UNDERSTANDS THE TEXAS CAPITAL’S PASSION FOR PLACE LIKE CHENOWETH, WHOSE XYZ ATLAS SHOWS WHERE AUSTINITES HAVE EXPERIENCED THEIR HIGHS AND LOWS.

Jennifer Chenoweth jokes that she feels like “a dinosaur” because she can use power tools and has classical training, but she is learning the computer graphics program Rhino in order to do 3-D design. “Digital prints help art be more affordable for more people,” she notes. Her XYZ Atlas project also includes small sculptures (TOP) based on the flowerlike color wheel of emotions that’s also at the heart of The Hedonic Map of Austin (2015; ON COVER, RIGHT).

This spring, artist Jennifer Chenoweth unveiled the final installment in her collaborative multimedia project XYZ Atlas, which employs art, technology, and psychology to illustrate how Austinites feel about places around their city. Over a three-year period, 500 people responded to her surveys, which asked questions like “Where did you fall in love?” and “Where did you have your worst night?” Inspired by Robert Plutchik’s color wheel of emotions (lemon yellow for joy, dark green for terror, and so on) and using geospatial information systems technology, Chenoweth created The Hedonic Map of Austin, which depicts where residents have felt their highs and lows. The happiest point is a lemon-yellow peak right over Barton Springs and Zilker Park, the urban oasis in this outdoors-obsessed city. “I thought people would just answer with two-word locations, but they told these rich stories,” says Chenoweth, 47, who was also surprised by how the surveys tracked Austin’s rapid growth. She has expanded XYZ Atlas to include temporary art installations, a catalog, and a large solar-powered steel sculpture of a lotus flower called Dance of the Cosmos. Chenoweth is now applying for grants to help her fund the digital platform of XYZ Atlas so she can take it to other cities. “The possibilities of art have completely changed through technology,” she says. Artwork from XYZ Atlas is on display through August at the Beverly S. A fruit sticker, a plastic twist tie, a price tag: Rachel Perry collects, cherishes, and creates world-class art out of them—thousands and thousands of them. The current artist-in-residence at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Perry, 54, has spent her career exploring how our identity is defined by modern consumer culture. She’s a collector first, hand-peeling labels and meticulously preserving them on wax paper; then, she is a sculptor, photographer, performance artist, and painter. Her mission: “What I am doing here is trying to comment on the daily life of one small life on this planet as it may relate to art, and that is all.” Born in Tokyo, Perry earned a BA from Connecticut College and a diploma and fifth-year certificate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She was honored with the Catherine Boettcher Fellowship at the MacDowell Colony and is a two-time winner of the Massachusetts Cultural Council Award for Excellence in Drawing and Sculpture. Her work is displayed in numerous museums and private collections around the world. Her solo show, “What Do You Really Want?,” is currently on view at—literally on the outside wall of—the Gardner Museum. “Rachel Perry: What Do You Really Want?” runs through June at the Gardner Museum, New Wing Façade, 25 Evans Way, 617-566-1401; gardnermuseum.org. In a city of full frontal fabulousness, we love a gritty foil. The pawn shop-inspired entryway at Tao Group’s 10,000-square-foot Beauty & Essex restaurant in Cosmopolitan provides just such a moment: Lined with vintage guitars and watch counters, it makes way for the opulent, jewel-themed rooms within, where maximalist décor rules the day. Ogle the custom chandelier in the Pearl Lounge, check your vibe in the Mirror Room with its gold DJ booth, and stroll a hallway draped with vintage lockets. The multiethnic shared-plate menu from Chopped judge Chris Santos is both tried and new, including dishes from the star’s first New York restaurant, Stanton Social—look for the wildly popular French onion soup dumplings to blow your table’s collective mind. A grilled cheese, smoked bacon, and tomato soup variation from Beauty & Essex NYC has made the trip to Vegas, along with other faves including braised chicken meatballs, which Santos says are “even better” here, using locally sourced meat from a small farm. SplaSh and Burn Las Vegas Looks to burning man for some of its most compeLLing pubLic art pieces.

Life Cube gives artists the chance to put their mark on the structure before it is ceremoniously burned down (above right) to reflect the idea that nothing is permanent—including life itself.

As MGM Resorts International put the finishing touches on its long-awaited Park last year, the company turned to an unlikely source—the northern Nevada-based arts festival Burning Man—for the space’s pièce de résistance, a 40-foot-tall steel sculpture of a nude

woman in motion. “MGM was looking for a piece of art that was unusual and riveting,” says Marco Cochrane, the artist behind Bliss Dance, the Park’s unofficial anchor (thepark vegas.com). “Bliss Dance’s first placement was in the desert at Burning Man in 2010, and now she’s back in

the desert in Vegas.” Relocating the sculpture to Las Vegas from its temporary home on San Francisco’s Treasure Island, where it had stood since 2011, is a more natural fit for Cochrane’s creation than most people realize. “Bliss Dance isn’t just art for art’s sake—it’s intended to

convey a social message,” the artist explains. “MGM really cared about the message of the sculpture, which is intended to humanize women.” Of course, Bliss Dance isn’t the first public art piece Vegas has acquired from Burning Man. Perhaps the most familiar

transplant is former aerospace engineer Kirk Jellum’s metal praying mantis, which stands sentry outside Downtown Container Park (downtown containerpark.com). Debuted at the festival in 2010, the 40-foot-long creature—Jellum’s first art project—was purchased by

Along with shooting flames from its antennae, the oversize insect moves, speaks, and plays music from a 4,000-watt interior sound system. Also taking over Downtown is Scott Cohen’s community-driven Life Cube Project, a short-term piece that returned in March for two-and-a-half weeks of interactive collaboration between Cohen and local artists (lifecubeproject.com). Originally staged at Burning Man in 2011, the project overtook a vacant Fremont Street parking lot for the first time in 2014, encouraging visitors to paint or write their

goals and dreams on a 24-square-foot whitewashed cube. “It wasn’t until after the project was up,” Cohen recalls, “that a local artist commented that it was the largest canvas in Las Vegas.” Per tradition, the piece later was publicly burned in a sunset ceremony attended by thousands of people, emphasizing the ephemeral natures of art and life. “We’re in a world where efficiency is what everyone strives for, but I was doing the opposite of that,” Cohen adds of the project, which he hopes to bring back to Vegas in the future. “What I found in Las Vegas is that there’s a hunger to get involved with projects like this—to get involved with expression.”

minimalist effort

The city of Las Vegas, with its desert surroundings and breathtaking views of both mountainous nature and the glittering Strip, is a perfect setting for stunning architecture. But at new luxury locations like Ascaya (ascaya.com), with its million-dollar home sites, it’s often what you don’t see that really counts. Gone are the days of gilt-covered everything, the massive ornate houses that Michael Gardner of Studio G Architecture (studiogarchitecture.com) refers to as “stucco-terranean.” “It really isn’t anything except a bunch of stuff,” Gardner says about the McMansions of the past. “The age group starting to be able to afford luxury properties don’t want what they grew up in.” Minimalism and clean modern designs are what’s hot now. And despite the pristine appearance, these homes are equipped with the latest technology hidden inside their bones. “The biggest push is really for technology, appliances, and other unsightly-but-necessary items to be discreetly and seamlessly integrated into the overall design,” says architect Daniel Joseph Chenin (djc-ltd.com). “Clients are demanding smarter and smarter homes,” agrees architect Henry CJ Hoogland (hooglandarchitecture.com). “We try, as much as possible, to make those things go away: switches and lighting controls and sensors and window shades. We can basically control the entire house off an iPad.” An iPad, of course, is itself a triumph of minimalist design, something packed with functionality when you need it but that easily disappears from mind when you want to stare out the window—which is the guiding philosophy of design at Ascaya.

One of the remarkable features of this bedroom suite at 2801 Via Tazzoli is its view to the desert beyond.

this page, from top: Simple desert landscaping is the order of the day, as shown here in this Via Tazzoli home by Blue Heron; clutter is banished in this rendering of a kitchen at Ascaya by architect Henry CJ Hoogland.

Gardner, who designed the first home at Ascaya, capitalized on the high-elevation setting by creating a cantilevered roof structure where the master bedroom is perched above the rest of the house. “There are no columns obstructing the views,” he says. “It reinforces the verticality of the house. It gives you this very surreal feeling that you’re hanging out over the valley.” It’s a feeling he describes as so clean and Zen-like, it’s like a weight being lifted off your shoulders.

And that’s something more and more people want in devicedriven 2016, when they’re overwhelmed with stimuli. “I think our lives are saturated with many things vying for our attention,” Hoogland says. “Electronic gadgetry, relentless advertising, and media. For many, minimalist architecture is alluring because it’s the absence of all those things.” At Ascaya, Hoogland designed a home that capitalizes on the site’s spectacular vistas

above all else. The entry courtyard with glass on two sides is a graceful reminder that Vegas is all about indoor-outdoor living. Chenin, who recently completed a home at the Ridges (summerlin.com/the-ridges), factors in the microclimate of each particular site when he designs homes and also weaves in natural elements. “I like to incorporate a range of materials that can be extremely precise, but simultaneously random, such as marble, îî

sold multiple times. These sellers buy and sell and trade up to a bigger home.” Ascaya is no doubt betting that its mod squad of home designs attracts big-bankroll buyers. Other architects involved include the renowned Richard Meier (richardmeier.com) and Marmol Radziner (marmol-radziner.com). “The clientele in Vegas is getting more sophisticated, more design-savvy,” Gardner says.” Their expectations and the level of design they require is elevated. For the longest time, Las Vegas home design was influenced by Strip architecture, trying to recreate the Mediterranean.” Now it’s about celebrating Vegas’s own gorgeous backdrop. Enjoy the view.

It’s critical that all of us recycle properly. In fact, did you know recycling right is the #1 thing we can do to help the environment and the economy? But let’s face it, it’s not always easy to know what items go in which bin. That's why there is now a national movement to begin displaying standardized labels on bins ... to help people recycle more and help people recycle right. The standardized labels are proving to increase recycling levels by 50-100% and to help people recycle right! Need confirmation that everything old in Vegas is new again? Look no further than MGM Grand’s new Topgolf Las Vegas, a 105,000square-foot linksman’s paradise built on the grounds of the old Tropicana Golf Course. With its 108 climatecontrolled hitting bays, five bars, two cabana-flanked swimming pools, and built-in concert space, the four-level venue—the franchise’s largest flagship yet—is a serious upgrade on the course of the 1960s. Still, says Topgolf Director of Construction Dominic Crespo, “With Topgolf Las Vegas, the intent was to pay homage to vintage Vegas.” Guests will discover clever tributes to Vegas’s colorful past dotting the property, including a restored midcentury golf cart. “We created replications of the Riviera’s old light fixtures (the originals are no longer code-compliant). And we have some old Riviera bar pieces in our Riv Bar.” Along with multiple bars, the space tees up shareable small plates (kalbi short rib tacos, yellowtail sashimi), artisanal burgers, and craft cocktails—all solid distractions for visitors who aren’t exactly gunning to be the next Mickelson or Woods. Yet Crespo disputes the notion that enjoying Topgolf’s high-tech target-based games, which combine aspects of traditional golf, bowling, and darts, requires even a modicum of athletic finesse. “Everybody has a competitive side,” he adds. “You hit a couple of shots, and the next thing you know, you’re talking smack to your friends.” Fore! Twenty years ago, my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. She had very few places to turn, and lost a difficult struggle.

And yet, more than 30% of all lung cancer patients still don’t know about the therapies, specialists, and clinical trials available to them.

Today, we are on the brink of real breakthroughs in lung cancer research and there are significantly improved treatment options.

Lung cancer is a formidable foe, but we are finding new ways to fight it. Please visit SU2C.org/LungCancer for questions to ask your health care professional and to learn about options that may be right for you.

CUCINA COUTURE DOLCE & GABBANA REDEFINES “COOL” WITH ITS LATEST DESIGNER COLLABORATION.

“We really do draw endless inspiration from Italy,” says Stefano Gabbana, half of the forever trendsetting duo behind Dolce & Gabbana, which, for the first time, has partnered with luxe Italian appliance brand Smeg on a limited-edition collection of hand-painted refrigerators. “Both Domenico [Dolce] and I love our roots and where we come from… it’s almost as if we are giving back to Italy everything we feel it has given to us.” Each of the 100 Fab 28 Smeg refrigerators is unique, handpainted, and signed by a Sicilian artist—including mother-daughter duo Adriana Zambonelli and Tiziana Nicosia; craftsmen Biagio Castilletti and Damiano Rotella; and brothers Antonio and Giuseppe Bevilacqua, both ceramics artists—and features iconic Sicilian images such as lemons, cart wheels, and the trinacria, the head of Medusa surrounded by three bent running legs. “Vibrant colors, references to the local culture—it’s everything that we love and that reminds us of Italy,” says Domenico Dolce of the refrigerators, which retail for €30,000 (approximately $34,000). “Much of our work is all about the details. That’s something that’s always present and part of our brand DNA—this project is no exception.” smeg.com

Swipe, Up, and Away!

on-demand transporTation takes flight with a new generation of mobile apps.  by jill sieracki

When apps such as Uber, Lyft, Gett, and Via launched, the digital startups served as major disrupters for the private car industry. Now, a wave of new apps—including FlightTime, Skyjet, Blade, and JetSmarter—provides the same convenience for private air travel. “The private jet industry was very archaic,” says Sergey 130  vegasmagazine.com

Petrossov, CEO and founder of JetSmarter, a mobile service that offers access to private jet flights in US cities such as New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, and globally in hubs like London, Paris, Geneva, and Dubai. “The brickand-mortar process of picking up the phone, speaking to numerous

people, and waiting for hours in order to charter a jet was outdated and inconvenient,” he says. “I wanted to change that and create accessibility for the market.” Appealing to a range of entrepreneurs and deal makers (Jay Z is reportedly an investor), JetSmarter offers three tiers of services, including JetCharter, or

whole aircraft bookings, available in 170 countries; JetDeals, or free one-way flights for app members; and JetShuttle, which offers free or discounted seats on already established private jet flights. “Without mobile technology, JetSmarter would not exist. We use it to aggregate supply and demand with predictive

algorithms,” says Petrossov of JetSmarter’s $9,000 annual membership program, which also includes concierge services for hotels, exotic cars, hard-to-get tables, and access to other exclusive events. “We’re allowing people to travel a lot more for a fraction of the cost.” And in sky-high style. jetsmarter.com

Go, Speed RaceR! This ciTy may place a premium on adrenaline, buT racing one of The cars in The largesT exoTic supercar fleeT around The las Vegas speedway mighT jusT Trump all.

Adrenaline is our first and still best mood-elevating substance: It can turn a bad day around or lift a great one to new heights. Which is how we found ourselves, on an already excellent morning, flooring a bright orange Lamborghini Huracán down an asphalt straightaway adjacent to the Las Vegas Speedway, going too fast to risk a glance at the speedometer. Las Vegas can tingle your nerves in untold ways, from ziplines to rooftop roller

coasters to swimming with sharks. But for a truly premium adrenaline cocktail, you want to mix the thrills with gorgeous style. That’s where Exotics Racing comes in. Created in the spirit of actor Steve McQueen, an avid amateur driver, Exotics lets non-racers like us zoom our favorite high-end dream car— Ferrari, McLaren, Aston Martin —around a special track that lacks only one feature: a speed limit. The Lambo was our jam, and

after a bit of classroom instruction, we were in the cockpit of that 610-horsepower Italian sculpture, cackling as we flew through the curves, the engine’s high-powered whine the sound of an item being checked off of our bucket list. An instructor in the passenger seat helped us max out every last mph. “Now, full throttle,” he encouraged when we were overcautious. “Don’t forget to breathe,” he reminded us in the third lap, when he in fact

almost had. As much as it’s a thrill ride, this is also an education, in the techniques of race driving and, more elementally, in finding your limits. (According to the optional video, we topped out at 115. Breathe, indeed.) After five laps, our need for speed was wholly satisfied, and a good day had turned epic. We’re pretty sure Steve McQueen gave us a thumbs up as we left. From $199 for 5 laps,702-405-7223; exoticsracing.com
