SHE’S ELEKTRA! MARVEL’S SEXIEST DEADLY WEAPON MAKES HER MODERN COMIC BOOK DEBUT RIGHT HERE IN VEGAS.

Elektra Natchios is known to fans of the Marvel’s Daredevil series on Netflix as an equal parts scary and sexy ninja assassin—and love interest of the show’s titular superhero. But comic book fans have known her as one bad-ass (and über-wealthy) heroine since her first Daredevil appearance in 1981. Now for the first time, Elektra gets her

10  VEGASMAGAZINE.COM

own solo comic series, which kicked off in Sin City in February when, on the off-side of her off-again/ on-again romance with Daredevil, she ditches Manhattan and slinks off to Vegas (as one does). “Elektra is in Vegas to hide in plain sight,” says writer Matt Owens. “She, like all of us, is searching for belonging—for

a place of zero judgment. She goes to Vegas to spend all of her money away, not thinking about her next move. That’s where she gets wrapped up in something she wasn’t expecting.” Sounds about right for the city that’s the perfect cover for a fashionable femme fatale. “Vegas immediately jumped out at me,” says

Owens of the idea for the setting. “It’s fun and sexy and dangerous in ways that New York is not.” Safe to say that where Elektra goes, trouble soon follows, and trouble arrives in the form of Arcade, another assassin (and oft X-Men foe) who leaves his victims playing a game of chance for their lives. Expect high-stakes battles from New

York-New York (“because how could I not?” Owens says) to Luxor and other Vegas icons. Elektra is the dark heroine who plays by her own rules, shedding her identity to try on something new in Vegas, and keeping to the shadows, where the rules don’t matter. Words to live by? Well, maybe for the weekend.

clockwise from top left: The delightful and hilarious Jaymes Vaughan emcee’d our record-breaking Vegas Gives event at Grand Canal Shoppes; incredible talent Vanessa Williams was this year’s Nevada Ballet Theater Black & White Ball honoree; I was thrilled to be at the same (long!) table with so many notables at the fabulous Ultimo Grand Banquet at Venetian this year. (Badgley Mischka dress courtesy of Rent The Runway.)

EVERY DAY IS AN ADVENTURE IN FASHION AT MY HOUSE, and I’m not talking about myself. (My daily uniform, despite what you might see on social media or this page, can probably best be described as utilitarian.) No, the adventure begins the moment my 7-year-old daughter walks out of her room, always wielding the accessory we’re promoting on our cover: bravado. She has no fashion restrictions (except being sufficiently covered), and there’s been more than one time I’ve sent her skipping to class looking like a rodeo clown. Who says matching is all about color coordination? Sometimes it’s about rocking an all-animal-themed ensemble. Restraint is for the unimaginative. We can all learn something from this. Recent reported presidential edicts to women staffers to “dress like women” have sparked conversation in our house. The #DressLikeAWoman campaign on Twitter has had us looking at pictures of a doctor doing an

autopsy in scrubs (and pearls!); California Senator Kamala Harris’s tweeted picture of Dr. Mae Jemison in full astronaut suit; and of course the notorious RBG in judicial robes. But to me, this isn’t just a conversation about gender roles and what they should look like; it’s about self-expression worn literally on your sleeve. It’s about breaking out of uniform—and maybe your comfort zone—in the name of wearing something just because it makes you happy. In honor of our Spring Fashion issue, I plan to let my daughter pick out this month’s outfits. I have a feeling we’ll both be looking fabulous. Post your fabulous spring looks on Instagram @vegasmagazine #thevegasedit. We’ll choose our favorites by March 31 for an online readers’ spring fashion slideshow. Enjoy the issue!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Our annual Vegas Gives event at the Grand Canal Shoppes at Venetian and Palazzo brought in over $100,000 for charity! Here, Jalynn Russell, Jaymes Vaughan, Sophia Song, Leta Rose, Andrea Bennett, and I took a group shot after the festivities.

AS FASHION TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT THIS SPRING, and I pack my winter sweaters away, I’m inspired by the effortless prints of DVF, now helmed by Jonathan Saunders (see page 54 for our story) and the fun of Tory Sport, now open in Fashion Show ( see page 60). Spring is a time of renewal and rejuvenation. As we prepare for the warmer weather, some of you may be amping up your health and fitness plans in preparation for pool parties and moonlight soirées. My plan? Heading to TruFusion, for yoga, Pilates, cycling—and for you brave souls, TRX and boot camp. Your body is your

canvas, and since the athleisure trend is going nowhere (and getting sexier), I’m loving Niyama Sol’s eco-friendly active wear. Of course, since this is Vegas, we have to balance working on ourselves with having fun! I can’t wait for all the headliners in town this spring, including Cher, Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, Céline Dion, and the return of Reba McEntire with Brooks and Dunn. It’s shaping up to be an incredible spring and summer in Vegas, and we can’t wait to share it with you. Live, love, dance,

Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto officially opened his Morimoto Las Vegas restaurant at MGM Grand on November 3. The evening kicked off with a traditional lion dance, a symbolic act of bringing good fortune to a new endeavor. Chef Morimoto broke down a 132-pound tuna with his legendarily precise knife skills, to the delight of the crowd. MGM executives then assisted Chef Morimoto in creating a 100-foot maki sushi roll with the fresh tuna. Guests were served Morimoto classics, such as hamachi tacos and pan-fried pork gyoza, plus the teppan tables sizzled with Japanese A-5 wagyu and Colorado organic lamb chops. The crowd of Las Vegas VIPs drank soon-to-be local favorite Green Dragon and Mango Lotus cocktails.

The fourth annual Ultimo: Weekend of Excellence, an extravagant, no-holdsbarred celebration of the good life (think a weekend of caviar, vintage Champagnes, Rolls-Royce driving experiences, and dining courtesy of some of the world’s best chefs) took place December 9–11. Masterminded by Venetian SVP of Food & Beverage Sebastien Silvestri, the theme of this year’s Ultimo was “Le Grand Voyage.” Guests, the proceeds of whose weekend packages benefited Ment’or, which assists emerging chefs, and Keep Memory Alive, enjoyed a caviar and Belvedere reception in the exclusive Paiza Club, Rolls-Royce drives or hot air balloon rides in Red Rock Conservation Area, and a Dom Perignon picnic catered by Chef Thomas Keller. Highlights included the six-course Grand Banquet along a massive table that spanned the length of Venetian’s Grand Colonnade, served by Keller and other chef luminaries Ming Tsai, Curtis Stone, Paul Bartolotta, Vikram Vij, Emma Bengtsson, Jerome Bocuse, Pierre Thiam, and Shaun Hergatt. The over-the-top weekend ended with a Lalique after party in Palazzo’s Presidential Suite, with rare Patron tequila nightcaps, and a Hacienda Patron farewell brunch on Sunday morning.

New York has been known as the global hub for cosmetic dentistry for the international community since the emergence of smile makeovers. Between 60,000 to 80,000 patients travel to New York and other American Cities for advanced dental treatment from other countries annually. Most of the patients are from the Middle East and South America. Dr. Lee Gause is going against the tradewinds to bring amazing dental services to people in far away places, rather than forcing patients to travel to far away continents for care. Although he is 90% in New York at his posh dental practice Smile Design Manhattan recent demand in places as far as Kazakstan, or Dubai have caused Dr. Gause to take his dental team and expertise “on the road. Although initially, it may not seem worth it to take a 20 hour flight to see patients halfway across the globe, the extreme need for beautiful and healthy smiles and scarcity of advanced cosmetic dental service globally has both Dr. Gause and his international patients smiling.

MAN OF THE WORLD HOT ON THE HEELS OF A MASSIVE WORLD TOUR, LATIN SENSATION RIC Y MARTIN LANDS STATESIDE, BRINGING GLOBAL INFLUENCES TO HIS RESIDENCY AT THE PARK THEATER.

BY LAUREN EPSTEIN

Where in the world is Ricky Martin? Everywhere. Since joining Puerto Rican boy band Menudo at age 12, Martin has released 10 solo albums—catapulting a worldwide Latin pop phenomenon—boomeranging from continent to continent driving audiences wild. And who can blame them? Musical chops aside, the 45-year-old musician is as charming and gracious as they come—and since wrapping up his One World Tour and dropping the über-successful party track, “Vente Pa’Ca,” he’s thrilled to settle into a Vegas residency at the Park Theater at Monte Carlo, beginning in April. After touring for nearly three years, why did you decide to do a residency? “Vegas is something I always wanted to do. I wanted to be part of that amazing, beautiful, historical roster of artists and residents in Vegas … and the timing has been perfection. All the pieces of this board are in the right place for us to attack in a very beautiful way.” What can audiences expect? “I’m working with Jamie

King, who I worked with on a few of my tours [including] the Livin’ la Vida Loca tour. With everything he’s done, from working with Britney Spears, Madonna, and at the Super Bowl, I feel very protected with him. It’s going to be a show for the ages, a very international show. It’s important for me to always bring my Latin influences, but hey, I’ve been around the world since I was 12 years old, so musically speaking it’s going to be very international. We’re going to prepare something very special for the crowd.” You know, you’ve earned a vacation. “Being on stage is like a comfort zone that makes me feel right about my decisions, about where I’ve been, and where I want to go… It’s my vice. I am addicted to the sound, the roar of the crowd when the music starts, and I don’t see myself doing anything else.” What else do you have in store? “Without a doubt I need to lock myself in the studio and record more music. And between the shows in Vegas I will be visiting Latin America and Europe for concerts. And hopefully Asia as well. We want to be very loud with these Vegas shows. Once we’re done we’ll bring that production around the world.” It doesn’t sound like you’re slowing down any time soon. “I laugh about this because I’ve been saying I’m going to rest for the past nine or 10 years, and then I sign a document saying I’m going on the road again. That’s just the way it is.”

As you read this, the much-anticipated duo of Momofuku and Milk Bar has already arrived at Cosmopolitan. And it may surprise you to know that Michelin-starred Chang is “nervous as all hell” about his Momofuku opening, since he wants to be a locals’ favorite. He plans to judge his success against local favorite Raku: “I’m never going to be as beloved and intimate as Raku but I sure as hell want to try,” he shares. Prepare to delve into his hoedeopbap, the Korean dish Chang refers to as “a rustic version of chirashi.” And while many dishes draw on favorite flavors from other Momofuku restaurants, he says, “I don’t want to lie and say everything is going to be new, but everything is going to be new!” Where his Toronto ramen is different from DC’s ramen, he’s

MIX MASTER WITH A CONFIDENT, PRINT-CENTRIC SPRING COLLECTION, JONATHAN SAUNDERS DEBUTS AS DVF’S FIRST-EVER CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER.

“Printed textiles were always something I loved, so there is a definite synergy,” says Jonathan Saunders of his interpretation of the iconic DVF brand. LEFT, FROM TOP: Circle shoulder handbag ($298); colorful details from the Spring/ Summer 2017 collection.

The name Diane von Furstenberg evokes a rush of unique attributes: femininity, empowerment, confidence, grace. It also conjures New York itself. So when designer Jonathan Saunders presented his first collection for the iconic brand for Spring/Summer 2017, many wondered how a man from Scotland might interpret the vision of a worldly New York woman. The answer, it turns out, is quite successfully. “I saw it straight away— that effortless sense of ease, femininity without being too girly or frou-frou, sensuality, and a provocative nature,” says Saunders, 39, who built his name in London with his eponymous, print-heavy collection (which shuttered in late 2015 after 12 years in business), and who is now Diane von Furstenberg’s first creative head not named Diane von Furstenberg. “Textiles, and printed textiles in general, were always something I loved, so there is a definite synergy between what I stand for and what the brand stands for.”

Saunders’s bold mix of patterns is apparent in this dress ($698) and origami belt ($178) from his new collection.

As von Furstenberg herself steps away from designing to focus more on her philanthropic work, Saunders has segued with ease into the newly created role of chief creative officer. With about three months to present his first collection—which features original Saunders prints—there wasn’t much time to sweat the small stuff. “It was definitely a baptism by fire,” he says. “But there was such goodwill and belief within the team about what I wanted to do, which enabled me to go in with the velocity that was required to put a collection together within that period of time.” That velocity-driven result is a lively, eclectic mix of printed separates, including bold, wide-legged trousers, structured outerwear, flowing skirts, versatile shifts, and, yes, wrap dresses that stay true to the brand’s DNA. Printed silks and cottons—from an eye-catching Sakura blossom pattern to more graphic stripes and color blocking—create an overall sense of playful fluidity. Unsurprisingly, Saunders says he turned to dancers and choreographers such as Michael Clark and Pina Bausch when conjuring up the new silhouettes, noting, “Dancers are incredible examples of body movement and sensuality.” And while DVF devotees will appreciate Saunders’s respect for the label’s heritage, he didn’t shy away from threading his own point of view throughout. One wrap-style dress in particular manages to combine a mixture of seemingly every print in the collection—a testament to his willingness to venture into unexpected territory. “When Diane started the brand, it was about effortless clothes, but also interesting clothes. These weren’t simple retiring dresses—they were bold, bright dresses that happen to have a sense of ease,” he says. “That still feels really relevant today.” The Forum Shops at Caesars, 702-879-2692; dvf.com

NORTH & SOUTH “TILTING THE BASIN,” AN ALL-NEVADA ARTIST SHOW FROM THE NEVADA MUSEUM OF ART IN RENO, TILTS SOUTH TO LAS VEGAS. BY ANDREA BENNETT

Haven’t most good art initiatives hatched from a warehouse? In a happy confluence of timing, artistic support, and vision, the important show “Tilting the Basin: Contemporary Art of Nevada,” featuring 34 Nevada artists from the north and south of the state bisected by the Great Basin, makes its way to Las Vegas in March. The timing: Around the same time Las Vegas art consultant and gallerist Michele Quinn was co-curating the show with Nevada Museum of Art curator JoAnne Northrup in 2014, she joined the board of the nascent Art Museum at Symphony Park. Since the show was designed to bridge the north-south divide, she says, “We agreed we needed to bring it down here. So we spoke to the [Art Museum] board. Everyone saw the importance.” The artistic support: At the same

time, Quinn had been working with developer and art patron Steven Molasky, who was looking to acquire a warehouse space downtown. He closed on the skylit, 14,000-square-foot building in December, and the show had its location—a pop-up gallery in a railroad track-side location on Commerce Street. The vision: “Everybody’s work is so different,” Quinn explains of the show that examines culture, environment, politics, and technology in a wide range of media. “It would be difficult to point to a single work that is emblematic of the show.” A print portfolio of 10 pieces by Las Vegas artists can be purchased at the show or on Quinn’s gallery website: 100 percent of the sale benefits the Art Museum at Symphony Park. IF YOU MAJORED IN BOY BANDS IN THE ’90S, YOUR CONCENTRATION COMES IN HANDY THIS YEAR. BY MARK GRAY

The Las Vegas entertainment scene has hopped into a music time machine and set the dial squarely to a time when crop tops and high tops were the norm and when songs smelled like teen spirit. Yes, the city is fully embracing the 1990s and it’s paying off. In March, the Backstreet Boys kick off a 26-show residency at The Axis at Planet Hollywood (844379-0370; planethollywood.com). Ticket sales were so swift that more shows had to be added to satisfy demand. In fact, Backstreet made Vegas history as the fastest selling residency show in the city’s modern history. It’s not just them. In February, Vanilla Ice, Coolio, Salt-N-Pepa, Color Me Badd (remember them?) and a slew of others set their sights on Hard Rock’s The Joint for the “I Love the 90s” concert. In May, New Kids On the Block, Paula Abdul, and Boyz II Men bring their “Total Package” tour to the T-Mobile Arena (702-692-1600; tmobilearena.com). Luxor’s LAX nightclub has been successfully booking ’90s-era acts to perform for over a year now, as well. Why? “There’s a lot of nostalgia around the ’90s,” says Kurt Melien, president of Live Nation Las Vegas, the masterminds behind the Backstreet residency. “These people are at that perfect age where they remember what it was like 20 years ago, when they were effectively 10 to 15 years old. If this was happening five or six years ago, it wouldn’t be quite the same.” In other words: Stop, collaborate, and listen to the music of a generation we can’t get enough of.

We love our athleisure in Vegas, where nights are obviously reserved for all that sparkles, but daytime demands a more flexible wardrobe that can bounce from lunch to fitness to a meeting. “The energy, the lights, the sense of fun,” say Tory Burch, make the city the perfect newest destination for her now nearly twoyear-old venture, Tory Sport. A tennis fan herself, her 1,900-square-foot Fashion Show boutique has nods to sports everywhere, from leather-wrapped mirror frames (reminiscent of vintage tennis rackets), to a diamond patterned, abstract net floor, and a ’70s-era surf lodge feel. It’s the ideal stop for the Tory Sport girl—who Burch describes as having a “wear-anywhere approach that balances fashion and function.” The collection (which Burch says she practically lives in) merges classic silhouettes like a green striped pleated tennis skirt, and lightweight, high-tech fabrics in fresh colors and graphic prints, with playful details like ruffled sneakers. They’re perfect not only for Burch’s die-hard fans, but Vegas women overall, Burch says. The Tory Burch Sport wearer, she says, “is free-spirited, feminine, and fun. Hermosillo shares the journey of this outstanding expression. How long did it take to create Alta Belleza? Nearly 16 years—which included handpicking 12-year-old blue agave, triple-distilling the añejo in small batches, and then aging it for three years

before a six-month finishing in T5 Tonnellerie Taransaud French oak wine barrels that formerly held Robert Mondavi To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon. What makes the Taransaud barrels so special? We have worked with the Taransaud cooperage for

years, so it was quite an opportunity to access these particular barrels, which add a singular complexity to the taste profile. Share the elements of that taste profile. It is a blend of two places: Jalisco, Mexico, and the Napa Valley. The complex tastes of sweet

cooked agave, toasted almond and cinnamon, and the aromas of green apple and spices mingle with finishing notes of nuts, green pepper, and cinnamon from the wine barrels, which also deliver a beautiful copper tone. Available at Wynn Las Vegas, 702-770-7000; wynnlasvegas.com

SPACE SURREAL ESTATE

BROOKLYN BRIDGE A NEW YORK RESTAURANT DESIGNER DUO TAKES ON ITS FIRST RESIDENCE AND PUTS A NEW SPIN ON “DESERT MODERN.”

Las Vegas is a city built on reinvention, so it makes perfect sense to join the classic, midcentury modern aesthetic of Palm Springs and Las Vegas with designs from an influential, contemporary Brooklyn-based brother duo. In fact, the unlikely marriage works perfectly in the Downtown penthouse of James Weidner, managing partner of Lucky Dragon Las Vegas and founding partner of Nicaragua furniture manufacturing facility Maderas Collective. Located in the Soho Lofts, what began as a skeleton space lacking most standard living necessities beyond a roof is now puts a new spin on the desert modern aesthetic in the city. “I always loved Palm Springs; I love the Frank Sinatra house,”

Weidner says. With that mid-mod aesthetic serving as inspiration for the design, he recruited Evan and Oliver Haslegrave of Home Studios in Greenpoint, Brooklyn (homestudios.nyc), who he’d originally met when considering their ideas for a local bar. The Haslegraves, well known for mastering the BK vibe of many of their neighborhood watering holes, first met Weidner at Elsa—their first commercial project. Located in Manhattan’s East Village, it was modeled after a fashion designer’s workroom, warmly industrial with its Edison lightbulbs and a quirky beer tap built into a sewing machine. That was 2009, around the time Weidner had begun looking for a permanent residence—he spends the bulk of his year traveling.

Unable to settle on the right space, the natural transition was to Weidner’s newly acquired Downtown spot. And with that came the Haslegrave’s first residential project. “Although we predominantly work on hospitality projects, we are interested in residential and retail as well for the different opportunities they offer,” Oliver says adding, “James was a dream client who trusted our aesthetic sensibilities and was open to some fun experimental ideas.” For the Haslegraves, a new take on desert style meant a minimal approach, clean geometry and elemental materials. Weidner approved, not only because of his familiarity with their work in New York but also in part because the brothers have worked with Maderas Collective. The custom furniture and millwork, all designed by the Haslegraves, were crafted at Maderas. “James’s loft is a great example of their work,” Dave Grossman, CEO of Maderas Collective, says. “They designed everything from top to bottom, and we worked on it from the start with them in nailing every little detail.” The home became a fusion of Haslegrave’s staples—materials like wood, tile, plaster, concrete, steel, copper— and the midcentury modern look Weidner desired. This includes that desert feel, which is reflected through the muted tones and best seen in the central living space with its double height ceilings, oversized windows, second floor office/ balcony and restrained material palette. Oliver calls this the essential desert modern aesthetic for “entertaining, glamour, and meticulous attention to detail.” “With such an awe-inspiring view of the Las Vegas Strip,” he adds, “we wanted this space to be a vantage point to observe the magical and intense world through the window, and also to have that world be part of the interior.”

UNDER the INFLUENCE More than just a pretty face, model Olivia Culpo breaks through the digital ceiling, lending glamour, celebrity, and success to the term “influencer.” by JARED SHAPIRO

photography by MIKE ROSENTHAL

“What do you do?” It’s a question many get asked, though probably not as often as former Miss Rhode Island, Miss USA, and Miss Universe Olivia Culpo. But for Culpo, it comes more in the form of, “What does she even do?” In an increasingly digital world where success is measured by likes and clicks, it’s hard to quantify the effect an “influencer” can have not only on a brand but on the public as well. In fact, dare have 1.5 million Instagram followers gawk as you pose in the latest trends and you could get labeled as “famous for being famous.” But when luxury brand Kipling taps you to be the face of its holiday campaign, while Rampage Jeans, ghd hair tools, and L’Oréal all count you as one of their faces, and on top of that, Moët & Chandon hires you to go to the Golden Globes and create this year’s specialty cocktail, it’s safe to say the success is not only quantified, but also monetized. There’s a living to be made doing this, and Culpo is the genius who’s figured out what so many companies and brands seemingly can’t—how to make social media work for them. Add in frequent appearances in Las Vegas and brand appearances at Art Basel, a Bali trip with Revolve, two upcoming films—American Satan and Tired Lungs—Paris Fashion Week, recent appearances on Project Runway and The Kitchen as well as the cover of Seventeen Latin America, and this model/actress is a far cry from the self-described “dork in band camp.” Especially when you consider she’s dating New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola. You grew up in a small town in Rhode Island, hardly destined to become a globally recognized face… I was the typical middle child of five siblings, always feeling like I was getting the short end of the stick. I always felt like my parents were too busy to pay attention to me. Plus, I played the cello all through school and went to band camp. I was never really seen as beautiful; I never thought that I would be able to model. I spent a lot of time going from orchestra to band camp, and I had to practice a lot—my parents were pretty strict. How does a band camp girl who didn’t think she was beautiful end up in beauty pageants? As a little girl, I was really chubby. I don’t think kids know anything about diet, so I’m sure I was eating whatever I wanted to. And on top of that I was not athletic. I was definitely more into the arts, and I was a late bloomer. All of a sudden, I got really tall and lean. After my crazy growth spurt, I looked like a completely different person. As the years went on, I went to Boston University and studied communications and acting. A lot of the people that I looked up to were actually, surprisingly enough, women who had

gotten their start in pageants, like Halle Berry and Giuliana Rancic or Maria Menounos. Back to the band camp thing… All of my siblings played different instruments, and we would drive an hour out of state to go to the best orchestras. In high school, the cool girls didn’t understand why I would always play my cello because they thought it was dorky. I remember wanting to hang out with my friends after school and my cello wouldn’t fit in their car, so I could never go home with them. And walking up the street with my cello and having to put it on the bus, and everyone yelling at me because they couldn’t get through the aisle and it was a safety hazard... There was a lot that set me apart. But as I grew older, I began to love that because it is such a unique talent to have, and I do respect my parents for pushing it on me. [Though] at the time, I thought it made me the biggest loser on the planet. What was it like trying out for a beauty pageant for the first time? My first pageant was when I got to college. I was 18 years old and that’s when I began modeling. I had to go to the agency and basically beg them to take me. They told me I needed to give them a check for $30, and I had no money, so I had to steal a check from my parents. My agency told me not to do the pageant; they thought it was tacky. My parents felt the same way. They thought it was vain. At what point did you realize this could be a career? My parents were never about makeup or hair. My mom to this day still wears absolutely no makeup; she doesn’t even have face cream! So growing up in that environment didn’t exactly promote any sort of putting on makeup or wearing revealing clothes, showing off your features and your beauty. It wasn’t until I branched out of my home life that I realized I could model for a living. When I got to college, friends would tell me I should model. Do you worry about some of the things that have happened to Kim Kardashian or online bullying? You definitely have to be cautious on social media. In terms of bullying, I try not to let it get to me. I genuinely believe that people who are putting themselves out there to make other people feel bad are in a worse-off place than you are. I try to just think of it as not even being real. Because a lot of times, these people are just kids behind a computer screen or just really sad, suffering people, and I don’t want to judge them. Their opinion doesn’t have much merit anyway. You are also good at staying out of drama. Many people in my age group fall into drama or have late-night tweeting episodes. I have a lot of people around me who support me, so I don’t feel like I have to go out and rebel or do things without thinking them through. That’s what it comes down to, thinking about the consequences of your actions. Absolutely, sometimes I wanted to do or say things and have my mind heard, but it’s not always what’s best. To what do you attribute your rise to success? Authenticity is very important in branding yourself and knowing what you want. It’s really difficult not to just hop on the bandwagon and do what every person is doing. I found that maintaining your brand and sticking to it makes all the difference. It sets you apart, and these days that’s what people want—something different. Does being a self-described “chubby little girl” play into your diet now? I just want to do what makes me feel best. And I don’t think it means you have to be any particular size. It’s different for every person. I am not super strict, but if I have something coming up and I know I need to be in bikini shape, then I will amp up the diet and the exercise. Naturally, I prefer to eat pretty healthy, but I am not the type of person who will count calories. I also drink about a gallon of water every day.

What are your thoughts on plastic surgery? No matter how much surgery you have, whether you are the most sought-after beauty in the world or you aren’t, it’s hard to always be happy in your own skin. If people have surgery to be happier, it’s something that they should be able to do without being ashamed. Is it important to keep your love life private? It’s absolutely a learning curve to decide what to keep private and what to let people see. And it is hard. Sometimes you are so excited about something and you want everyone to know, or you are really angry about something, but there is no right or wrong answer. Are marriage and kids in your future? Absolutely. Some of the people I admire the most are the women who can do it all, like Jessica Alba or Rachel Zoe. Just women who are absolutely killing it in their businesses and in their brand, but also have time to have a husband and children and maintain that privacy. Growing up in a big family has made family very important to me, and I definitely want that someday. Not right now, though. You were crowned Miss Universe in Las Vegas in 2012. What are your memories of that whirlwind time? The first time I ever went to Vegas was when I was competed in Miss USA. Every time I think of Las Vegas I think of those amazing memories from that time. Vegas is the place where my life changed. I went from being a Boston University college student to being whisked away to New York City for a long year as Miss USA and then eventually Miss Universe. I’ll never forget getting off the plane with my mom and heading over to Caesars Palace. They had upgraded us to a fancy suite and I remember thinking it was so beautiful—I couldn’t believe it! Now, every time I walk into a Vegas hotel I am immediately brought back to the moment I won Miss USA and Miss Universe. The smell of the buildings alone brings back so many memories. I know that sounds strange but it’s the truth! You’re in Vegas a lot! What do you love best? When I’m in Vegas I always have to go to the spa for some R&R. The hotels have the most luxurious spas. Another thing I always love to do is see a show. I really like all the Cirque du Soleil shows and of course some of the iconic musical performances like Shania Twain, Britney Spears and J Lo. My favorite hotels are Wynn and the Bellagio because they have everything. One minute you can gamble and drink cocktails and the next moment you can be looking at priceless works of art. The restaurants in Vegas are always great, too. The last time I was there we had this multi-course meal at Bazaar Meat by José Andrés. It was definitely over the top, but that’s what Vegas does best! Other restaurants I love in the area are by some of the most successful chefs I really admire like Giada, Bobby Flay, Emeril, and Gordon Ramsay. In fact, you’re adding “restaurateur” to your own job description. I’m from a big Italian family; my dad has owned restaurants my entire life. It’s something I have always dreamed of doing. We are opening this restaurant with my cousin in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, called The Back 40. It’s been fun to dive into the food space. (In February, Culpo showcased Superbowl recipes on Food Network’s The Kitchen.) Are you a die-hard Patriots fan? Everybody in Rhode Island clings to the Patriots. It’s the one thing that we have going for our tiny state. So everyone in Rhode Island is a Patriots fan, and I am one of them. Die-hard. Culpo serves as a spokesperson for HIV/AIDS awareness and an ambassador for Free the Children and We Day, and has traveled the world working with various charities in underdeveloped countries.

WATER WORLD ONE NIGHT FOR ONE DROP RETURNS TO ZUMANITY THEATRE FOR ITS FIFTH ANNUAL ALL-STAR BENEFIT.

Dance-trapeze artist Arthur Morel Van Hyfte contorts for the earth in this year’s One Night for One Drop.

One Night for One Drop is the philanthropic spectacle for which the city’s Cirque du Soleil productions go dark to lend their acrobats, aerialists, dancers, and clowns to benefit One Drop, the international nonprofit organization dedicated to providing access to safe water. But the message for this fifth annual performance, say Zumanity performers and writer/ director team Nicky and Laetitia Dewhurst, has broadened. “We wanted to make the show not only about water, but the issues facing the planet as a whole,” Nicky explains. A vintage circus theme provides the conceit, in which an old ringmaster (humanity), who has abused his assistant (the earth) is taken back in time to be taught a lesson. With its simpler but focused elements of clocks, timekeepers, and cogs, you’ll leave with the urgency and resolve of prior years—but, says Nicky, with a glimmer of hope. LIVING LAS VEGAS

For those lucky enough to make it past Timothy Sheldon (LEFT) to the formerly members-only Living Room, this serene scene awaits. Plus, you can watch the action in adjoining Intrigue from behind the safety of a two-way mirror.

HOW TO: BE INTRIGUING JUST BECAUSE WYNN’S LIVING ROOM IS NO LONGER MEMBERS-ONLY DOESN’T MEAN YOU’LL GET IN. TIMOTHY SHELDON EXPLAINS. BY ANDY WANG

The VIP room within Intrigue has, after a year of operation, dropped its members-only policy. But that doesn’t mean you’re getting into the lounge where Justin Bieber, Rihanna, and Gigi Hadid have partied. You’ll have to negotiate your way past 6’6” doorman (and former pro soccer player) Timothy Sheldon, who read all he

could find about Studio 54 gatekeeper Marc Benecke, and studied Page Six to help determine whom he should embrace and whom he should bounce. It seems like the best way to get into an exclusive spot is to be a celebrity, a real estate heir, or a model. Any tips for people who aren’t? “The best way to come in if you

don’t know anybody is to have a nice attitude. A smile helps. Anybody who’s got five drinks in them or is pushy, that kind of energy won’t work. Conversely, if a couple comes in and they’re out on some kind of holiday, they’ve got great energy and are articulate and dress well, they have a value. It could be the downtown skateboard kid

with paint on his nails because he’s done graffiti all day. Sometimes, you want to mix it up. You don’t want a bunch of bankers in there. A room full of beautiful women is boring if nobody else is there.” There’s no social media at the Living Room. “This room is not supposed to be a place everybody knows about. If you’re

XYZ celebrity who just broke up with your wife and you want to blow off steam with your boys, you come here and I take care of you and nobody knows about it. Unfortunately, with just the wrong handful of people, the room is all wrong. I don’t have a requirement of money we have to make. It’s about the integrity of the room.”
