VEGAS MAY BE FAMOUS FOR IMPLODING ITS PAST, BUT THE RELICS THAT SURVIVE? PURE ART. BY KRISTEN PETERSON

At night, the facade of the old Holsum Bread Factory [6] still promises the fresh bread it stopped making in 2002, when the factory closed and a developer who appreciated neon design turned it into a mixeduse creative space. Having survived the boom and bust years— all the growth that welcomed the new and ushered out the old with spectacular implosions or quiet razing—for some 10

VEGASMAGAZINE.COM

beloved buildings, adaptive reuse is the order of the day. A Downtown JC Penney department store [5] became the Fremont Medical Center, whose rooms were turned into galleries and studios when Emergency Arts opened in 2010, winning a Mayor’s Urban Design Award. The space-age 1961 La Concha Motel’s lobby [4] was so cherished, a fundraising effort paid for it to be

moved to serve as the visitor center for the Neon Museum. Even former flophouses get their share of love. After purchasing the John E. Carson Hotel [1] for $2.1 million, Downtown Project investors hired Bunnyfish Studio to revamp the Mid-Mod motel into a retail and dining spot. In 2012, the former post office and federal courthouse [2] famous for organized

crime hearings opened as the Mob Museum, surviving to tell the (sometimes gruesome) history of the city. But not every creative adaptation depends on architectural integrity: Every third Wednesday this summer, roller disco dances into the oncelanguishing, now geek-chic Gold Spike [3]; drone racers have overtaken the shuttered Western Hotel; and developer Arnold Stalk,

who first turned an Econo Lodge into veterans’ housing in 2012, is refitting an old Aviation Motel near Nellis AFB for his third location this year. Got a creative idea? There’s no shortage of buildings in need of saving: the original Art Deco Las Vegas High School, and the Huntridge Theatre, both on the brink of tear-down, await your innovation.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Cher and I took a picture together to celebrate her phenomenal cover for our Late Spring issue.

Last month, I was locked up inside Graff Diamonds in Wynn, which is a spectacular problem to have. It had been transformed into an enchanted garden to celebrate both its jewelry collection of the same name and to give Graff the opportunity to present the Las Vegas Philharmonic with a significant contribution. I’m only sorry they let me out at the end of the evening. (Beautiful emerald cabochon ring, we will meet again.) Graff is taking its garden of jewels to a very few cities, but the experience in Las Vegas was unique: Dining in a dreamscape with casino looky-loos peering through the windows is something I think we can agree could happen only in Vegas. In fact, if we’ve reached the point at which Instagram hashtags most succinctly describe our goings on, #onlyinvegas is a pretty decent maxim for my own past month. There was the day I caravanned with Tyson Beckford and a fashion crew to the Eldorado Dry Lake Bed, followed by the 1966 Dodge Charger that appears in our cover story,

hauled out on a flatbed truck courtesy of its owners Celebrity Cars (thank you, Celebrity!). A week later, Tyson had his own #onlyinvegas moment as we talked politics and superstardom at the Fatburger on the Strip and a mobile billboard with a giant Tyson Beckford image drove by. (A super fan, spotting him during our lunch, also had an #onlyinvegas moment when he took a dozen pictures with her to prove to the folks back home that she’d met the superstar on her first trip here!) Taking a picture with Cher to commemorate our Late Spring issue whose cover she graced? That counts! I often remind myself that those of us who live here are spoiled every day with the weird and wacky moments that make Vegas great, and summer is the best time to experience them. So go create a few #onlyinvegas memories of your own. Happy summer!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

from left: Vanessa Doleshal and Debbie Bingham joined me to celebrate the debut of The Aquatic Club at Palazzo; I got a red carpet moment with my mother, Jane Thomas.

The heat of summer is upon us, but never mind that: Have you seen our cover star, Tyson Beckford? The temperature has nothing on him! And since we’re all about gender equality here at Vegas, this cover is also a milestone. It’s the first anniversary issue in our 14 years with a man on the cover. (Way to break that ceiling, Tyson!) Like all Las Vegans, we’re focused on finding oases around town to get away from the heat in style. We’ll be celebrating our fabulous anniversary party this year at Red Rock Resort—one of our favorite places to cool off. And last month, we hosted the debut of The Aquatic Club at Palazzo, which takes pool style to a

whole new level (hello, boozy ice pops, synchronized swimmers, and delicious poolside fare by Wolfgang Puck!). You’ll find many more creative ways to celebrate a Las Vegas summer in the pages of this issue, from fashion to food— and fighting! (We can’t wait until UFC’s International Fight Week.) Along with all the exciting events this summer, we’re also celebrating joining our new Modern Luxury publishing family. We’re expanding our footprint in Las Vegas—and around the country—and are looking forward to all the great things on our horizon. Cheers!

After an incredible performance, meeting—and taking a picture with—Cher was a major highlight of the month!

TWO FOR THE ROAD THEY DEBUTED THEIR NEW SINGLE IN VEGAS AT THE ACADEMY OF COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS. NOW FAITH HILL AND TIM MCGRAW COME BACK TO TOWN ON THEIR SOUL2SOUL TOUR.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BECKY FLUKE

BY HEIDI MITCHELL

Faith Hill is a stay-at-home mom. The country singer may have five Grammys and more than two dozen chart-topping hits to her credit, but for the past decade, Hill has recorded in the studio, choosing her three daughters over the thrill of the road. The exception: when the opportunity arises to tour with her country mega-star husband Tim McGraw (who has three Grammys and countless hits to his name). Now that their youngest is just about old enough to drive, McGraw says hitting the road seemed like a good idea. In April, they launched the third iteration of their record-breaking 2006 Soul2Soul tour, which still claims the title of highest-grossing country music tour of all time, performed for more than 1.6 million people in 118 cities. “The 2006 tour was such an amazing spectacle, so how do you beat that?” asks McGraw en route to record in the studio. To match the stagecraft and excitement,

the pair rehearsed for more than a year and “built in a few surprises.” Faith does a solo set that McGraw says is “flat smoking every night” and they’ve pleasantly shocked concertgoers with unexpected tracks like the Aretha Franklin/ George Michael duet, “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me).” The McGraw-Hills have kept a few other balls in the air, like

debuting their girl-power duet “Speak to a Girl” at the 52nd annual Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas in April. It was just a taste of the couple’s first duets album, to be released later this year. “Individually, the music we were making was going well,” explains McGraw. “So the timing was never right for a duet album. And, in retrospect, I’m glad we

waited. As artists, you hope that songs that carry weight and have a message that is bigger than the artist find their way to you. When those songs come along, you feel privileged.” Devotees of the couple’s very different approaches to country music can expect to hear a few musical favorites during their show at T-Mobile Arena in July, and maybe a couple of

tunes the two sang during their hugely popular two-year residency at Venetian in 2012. “Faith makes me a better singer,” says McGraw. “I’m a Nascar and she’s an Indy Car. I’m a quarterhorse and she’s a thoroughbred. When we’re onstage together, I have to bring my A-game.” July 13, T-Mobile Arena; soul2soultour.com

CRITIC’S CHOICE FFEARLESS FOODIE JOHN CURTAS RATES AND ROASTS HIS BEST AND WORST RESTAURANTS FOR A LIVING. WE ASKED HIM TO PICK THREE DISHES YOU MUST SAVOR THIS SUMMER.

CHERRY TOMATO AND BURRATA SALAD @ Standard & Pour Nothing says summer like fresh tomatoes. Combine them with cool, creamy burrata cheese and a tangy, green olive emulsion vinaigrette, and you have a seasonal salad that is as refreshing as it is satisfying. After you’re done congratulating yourself on your healthy choices, don’t miss the adult strawberry shake here—where house-made strawberry ice cream meets crème de fraises liqueur poured over shortcake. It may undo all those light bites, but it’s as cool as a dip in your pool. 11261 S. Eastern Ave. #200; 702-629-5523; standard andpourlv.com

CAESAR SALAD @ Morels Steakhouse There’s only one way to make a proper Caesar salad: fresh and tableside. At Morels, they toss it to order, and they invariably get it just right. This Caesar is very traditional: Romaine, eggs, lemon, anchovies, fresh croutons, good Parmesan cheese, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper. That’s why it’s so good. THE FUTURE IS PLEIN

With your “more is more” aesthetic, Philipp Plein is perfect for Vegas! Why did you wait to open here? The US is a very sophisticated market, so I developed other international markets before I felt ready to introduce my brand here. Now I am very focused on making my brand known in the United States and even topping the success I have enjoyed elsewhere. Las Vegas is a destination that we have had our eye on for quite some time. Any pieces that will be exclusive to Las Vegas? Our new range of hand painted crocodile jackets will be available in the Las Vegas flagship. Each piece will be one-of-a-kind, featuring a unique hand-painted design on one of the most luxurious and costly materials available on the market. Each masterpiece will be chosen to cater to the particular taste and lifestyle of our Las Vegas clients. Of the over 120 stores worldwide this will be the first store that will house all of our lines: Philipp Plein men, women and junior, and Plein Sport men and women. [The design] is a new concept especially for the Las Vegas flagship. Who is your Las Vegas customer? I think the Las Vegas customer has a philosophy similar to my own: They enjoy the good things in life, they are not afraid of being different, and they are proud of who they are and what they have accomplished. Some of the iconic Philipp Plein hashtags that perfectly describe the Las Vegas state of mind and the customer that we feel close to are #Expect the unexpected, #First rule no rules, and #The devil is jealous of me. LOLLIPOP GUILD IS A VEGAS SUMMER HOT ENOUGH TO MELT STAINLESS STEEL SCULPTURES? SEE FOR YOURSELF AT ELENA BULATOVA’S NEW GALLERY.

Russian artist Elena Bulatova’s12foot lollipops in stainless steel were her first foray into art in public spaces. Part of her “Sweet Life Series,” the gooey, drippy lollipops are inspired by Claes Oldenburg’s Dropped Cone, which juts from atop a building in Cologne, Germany. The upside-down and oversized sculptures, now in corporate collections, are matched by others in her galleries with the same high-gloss candies and white stems, melting into their own puddles. The lollipops are featured along with the works of other artists, plus her vivid, large-scale abstract paintings, sculptures of full-bodied women, and other works at Elena Bulatova Fine Art on Gallery Row at Aria. She’s expanding her gallery into theGallery, which had shown the work of Dale Chihuly. It’s the fourth gallery, including a space in Laguna Beach, California, and her original gallery (and HQ) in Palm Springs, for Bulatova, who studied public administration and economics at Moscow State University, where she was awarded a Yale Fox International Fellowship in 2007. Read what you will into her contemporary pop-art portraits of superheroes and cartoons painted onto The Wall Street Journal pages as canvas. What you may find instead, though, is that her art is refreshingly devoid of angst. “They make people wonder and make them smile,” she says. “It takes them away from daily life.” 3730 Las Vegas Blvd. S.; 702-5907111; elenabulatovafineart.com

SINGER-SONGWRITER ROB THOMAS TALKS ABOUT MATCHBOX TWENTY’S REUNION FOR THIS SUMMER’S A BRIEF HISTORY OF EVERYTHING TOUR WITH COUNTING CROWS. BY SPENCER LUBITZ

Something tells us that Rob Thomas isn’t giving us a history of everything he’s done in Vegas, but we caught up with him before his tour beginning this summer. What are you most looking forward to about this tour? There are songs that we haven’t played in 20 years; we’re going to be playing everything that’s on that first record. It’s a good problem to have getting 20 years of songs in one tour.

Any favorite songs to perform live? I think as far as singles go, our song “Red Lights.” When we put it out we finally really started to understand who we were as a band and showcase our personalities. What can fans expect to see? Adam [Duritz, lead singer of Counting Crows] and I have been friends for over 20 years. At the end of the day, it’s all about playing good songs. Between us we have 45 years of music—there’s going to be a little something for everyone.

What do you like to do in town? My wife and I love to stay at Encore. We love Andrea’s restaurant, and we always have to have brunch outside at Terrace Point Café. Do you have any favorite memories of Las Vegas? [Laughs] I’m not sure. One of the good things about when we came up, was that we did it before TMZ and before Twitter. You could fall out of a club and no one was there to catch it with a camera. Mandalay Bay Events Center, July 29; 877632-7400; axs.com

STYLE COLLAB Museum pieces: Jeff Koons (left) gilds Louis Vuitton accessories with art history masterworks, including Fragonard’s Girl with Dog on the Montaigne MM bag ($4,000, below left), Rubens’s The Tiger Hunt on the Palm Springs backpack ($3,200, right), and Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa on the Chain bag ($3,900, bottom right).

ART-A-PORTER IT’S JEFF ONS’S WORLD, AND WE’RE JUST LIVING IN IT—AND DRESSING FOR IT—AS HE ANNOUNCES A NEW COLLECTION FOR LOUIS VUITTON.

Jeff Koons, the Pop Artinfluenced provocateur behind balloon-dog sculptures and Old Master reproductions, has always been better received by the general public than by the art world. But now the latter is catching up, following a major retrospective at the Whitney Museum, a prominent new public installation in New York, and, most recently, a gala in his honor at MOCA in LA. But as the conversation shifts around him, Koons remains happily himself at the center, announcing a major commercial collaboration in the form of a new fashion collection for none other than Louis Vuitton. Dubbed “Masters,” Koons’s pieces for the Parisian powerhouse deploy a premise similar to his “Gazing Ball” series, in which he hand-painted reproductions of some of art history’s greatest works and placed a gleaming blue orb at their center. This time, Koons has taken five of the most recognizable paintings in the

history of art—Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Titian’s Mars, Venus and Cupid, Rubens’s The Tiger Hunt, Fragonard’s Girl with Dog, and Van Gogh’s A Wheatfield with Cypresses—and placed them on purses, totes, scarves, bag charms, and shawls. This is the first time an original Koons has been featured in a fashion collaboration. “What’s wonderful about working with Louis Vuitton is their resources. They [have] the finest in the world,” says the 62-year-old artist. “The first samples come through and it’s like, ‘Wow! That’s better than anything I’ve seen before.’” Each accessory is adorned with the original artist’s last name in glitzy, appliquéd letters, providing a quick lesson in art history and in personal branding before the Instagram era. For his part, Koons signs the works, too: His initials appear as part of the classic Louis Vuitton monogram. The Shops at Crystals, 702262-6189; louisvuitton.com

STAR OF ABC’S NEW DIRTY DANCING REMAKE COLT PRATTES GETS REAL ABOUT TAKING ONE OF HOLLYWOOD’S ICONIC ROLES. BY LAUREN EPSTEIN above: Las Vegas native Colt Prattes headlines ABC’s new adaptation of Dirty Dancing premiering May 24. inset: If you’ve seen the original movie’s “lift” scene a thousand times, Prattes and co-star Abigail Breslin have a new one to fall in love with.

58  VEGASMAGAZINE.COM

There’s a new Johnny Castle in the Catskills—this time played by Las Vegas native Colt Prattes. Last seen in Vegas as Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages, Prattes’s has landed his biggest role yet—opposite Abigail Breslin—in ABC’s Dirty Dancing re-creation. Where were you when you got the role? I was on the fourth floor of the

Wynn parking structure, dropping my wife off because she was doing ShowStoppers. I got a call from the director and we jumped out of the car and started running in circles screaming. How did you prepare? I went to a lot of dance classes. I didn’t know anything about samba or tango or mambo or any of that.

How long did it take you to perfect the lift? You never perfect that lift. You can do it a million times. I’ve done versions of that lift my entire dance [career]. It took until the moment [Breslin] knew that I wouldn’t let anything happen to her, and the moment I knew she was capable and would do her part.

How daunting is it to take on such an iconic role? The only thing I can say is that I loved Patrick Swayze. I just wanted to do what I felt he did, which was approach [the role] with his heart open. You can’t do better than Patrick Swayze—that should never be the goal. I just hope that people get something from it the way I got something from what he did.

STYLE MUST-HAVE

COCO’S GOT A BRANDNEW BAG THE SIMPLY NAMED GABRIELLE IS CHANEL’S FIRST NEW HANDBAG LINE IN SIX YEARS.

THE GABRIELLE IS A DESIGN MARVEL, FUSING THE SLOUCH OF A HOBO-STYLE HANDBAG WITH A STRUCTURAL BOTTOM.

Freedom, comfort, functionality— these were the three requirements at the top of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s list when she created a handbag that merged practicality with style in 1955. Her idea for dressing the modern woman still rings true today, and it’s nowhere more apparent than in the new bag that bears her name. Chanel’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, introduced the Gabrielle bag during the brand’s Spring 2017 runway show. It’s a design marvel, fusing the slouch of a hobo-style handbag with a structural bottom, resulting in a contrasting silhouette that feels fresh and excitingly new. In order to achieve this posh juxtaposition, the handbag is fitted on a rigid thermoformed base, and the body of the bag is crafted from light and supple quilted leather. Of course, Chanel also has perfect taste in its muses, with Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne, Caroline de Maigret, and Pharrell Williams all helping to get the word out in an Instagram campaign. Available in a range of styles (quilted backpacks, chic shoulder bags, sturdy totes, and youthful bucket bags) as well as a multitude of colorways, the Gabrielle offers endless style possibilities. We can’t help but think Coco herself would be pleased. Wynn Las Vegas, 702770-3532; chanel.com

SUITE LIFE CLAIRE SINCLAIR’S DOWNTOWN “CLAIRE BNB” IS TAKING THE VEGAS RENTAL MARKET BY STORM. UP NEXT: EXPANSION!

CLOCKWISE: Claire BnB’s Enchanted Fairy Tale Suite; Vegas Vintage Glitz Downtown Suite; Artsy, Hip Downtown Suite; Sinclair in the Vintage Glitz.

If 2011 Playmate of the Year and former Pin Up burlesque star Claire Sinclair rang your doorbell bearing gingersnaps and a clipboard, you’d probably sign whatever she wanted. As she recounts going door-to-door seeking her neighbors’ approval for her seven-unit Airbnb rental, she’s sitting on the pink couch of her Vintage Glitz-themed rental, her bare feet tucked under her vermilion mini-dress, conjuring the sexily dissonant colors of a 1960s Playboy cover. The suite, appropriately, is modeled after the Pink Palace of Playboy icon Jayne Mansfield. “Every room is meant for shooting,” she smiles, and her fan base—Pin Up devotees, rockabilly tourists, and festivalgoers—has been keeping the Insta-perfect units booked since the first two opened. What she’s going for, she says, is a bright update to those “throwback Vegas motor inns.” The pink Jacuzzi tub with a waterfall feature and glittery walls virtually beg for naughty selfies. Other suites include a ’70s-inspired bachelor pad (think shag everything) and the Beauty and the Beast-inspired Fairytale Suite, with wacky-but-practical features like a soundproofed castle-like shutter and a gilt-framed mirror-TV in the bedroom. Sinclair, channeling her performance energy into new ideas, isn’t stopping at this building. “I’ve put my life savings into this project,” she says, “and every day I’m looking for more magic.” Ultimately, she sees Claire BnBs in Airbnb’s “top trending spots” like Portland and Palm Springs. “I want to animate the rooms. What if you pushed a ‘goodnight kiss’ button and music started playing? That’s next-level for us.” Claire BnB; 427 11th St.; airbnb.com

STYLE TIME HONORED

AS TECHNOLOGIES ADVANCED, DRIVERS BEGAN LOOKING TO WATCHMAKERS TO MEET THEIR NEEDS.

TRACK TIME THIS SEASON, THE BEST OF AUTO-INSPIRED AND RACING WATCHES HIT THE OPEN ROAD WITH SPEED AND STYLE. BY ALDOUS TUCK

Automobile enthusiasts’ tight bond with timepieces dates to the earliest days of motor sports. Drivers would strap big, bulky pocket watches to their wrists to measure timing and speed, either while maneuvering new race tracks or hitting a straightaway on a dusty back road. But as car and timepiece technologies both advanced, drivers began looking to watchmakers for pieces that met their specific needs. Watch brands not only responded to this call but drew from it, with auto-design inspiration

informing some of history’s most highly engineered and iconic pieces. (In many instances, watchmakers teamed up with specific automakers, racing teams, or races to create ticking tributes to them.) Some of the world’s most illustrious brands have revisited this racing tradition for summer, debuting exceptional timepieces that double as copilots for when the need for speed strikes. For more watch features and expanded coverage go to vegasmagazine.com/ watches-and-jewelry.

T YSON Tyson Beckford on supermodel staying power, his post-fashion projects, and why he just can’t get enough Chippendales. by ANDREA BENNETT

photography by DENISE TRUSCELLO

Tyson Beckford is a healthy, healthy man—about as virtuous an eater as those who have seen him in various states of undress in his weekend performances at Chippendales might imagine. But even supermodels take a cheat day, and during the shoot for our cover story, he told us his kryptonite is Fatburger. (His “cheat” is a double turkey burger with lettuce, onion, tomato, and ketchup.) But discipline isn’t new for Beckford. Even after becoming the exclusive face of Ralph Lauren’s Polo Sport label in 1994, he says, “There would be big billboards of me, but I was still going to acting classes and castings, doing jobs, reading movie scripts, learning my lines. It didn’t matter what was up there, because it was already up there. I’m always thinking about the future. What’s next?” What was next, of course, were over two decades as the most successful male supermodel of all time, and roles and appearances in dozens of films, television shows, and music videos. But the buzz on Beckford now is his third, sizzling celebrity host run with Chippendales—a role that both he and his clamoring fans love so much, it’s been extended through July 9th (with talks to add performances through the end of the year). Recently, we took Tyson to Fatburger on the Strip and, under the watchful gaze of circling fans, talked about how to stay relevant for decades, and why there’s no place he’d rather be on the weekends than with his Chippendales boys at the Rio.

If this is your cheat day, what’s a regular day like? I have a personal fitness chef that sends my meals to me weighed and in portions. They’re fish, grilled chicken and broccoli, and salmon of course. I used to eat red meat, but I got to a point where I said no more. It made me feel a lot lighter, a lot healthier. My mother got me on an organic diet when I was 25. A lot of people didn’t know what organic was at that time, and they didn’t have Whole Foods. You went to the market on a Saturday or Sunday or you bought from a local store that got it from someone’s backyard. So training for Chippendales doesn’t mean that you have to totally readjust your lifestyle… For me, no. From being a model, I always had that training to get into super-lean shape two weeks out. I’d be running like 5 percent body fat, and then if I knew I’d have to shoot something, I’d drop to 3 percent. I’d get calls from my manager asking what I wanted to eat on set, and I basically changed the whole crew to eating well. Where they’d never had kale before, they’d try it. Since I kept them working, they’d roll with it. I’ve heard you say that you’re bringing in more diverse crowds to Chippendales. Yeah, I’ve heard it from the guys. It’s all different age groups and nationalities. All these black ladies came in yesterday from the

“I REMEMBER AS A KID IN NEW YORK South, and they said, “We saw you on The View [he appeared April 12], and we just had to come see you.” When you get stuff like that, you kind of melt. It’s a really blessed thing to go out on a show like that and have your friends call you up and people on the street say, “Oh, I just saw you on The View, I just saw you on Dr. Oz.” What do you think it takes to stay relevant for so many years? I’m not doing anything special—I’m just being me! I look at kids on social media, and I say, “What’s your talent? Can you act? Can you sing?” We grew up watching people like Michael Jackson and Prince. They had so much talent and they changed the world musically and gave back to charities and in disasters. What have these people done? What is their contribution? Why is it you have more followers than a Nobel Peace Prize winner? Do you watch reality TV? I’ll watch it and I just laugh. And then I go back to the reality of what life really is. My reality TV is watching MSNBC and CNN. I want to know what Kim Jong-un’s doing. This is your third run as the celebrity host of Chippendales. How did it come about? They have this secret list. And you probably won’t ever get to see this list, but that’s their wish list. I remember as a kid in New York walking by their theater and thinking, Oh, they’re in great shape. Someday I’d like to look like that—never thinking that one day I would be one of those guys. People say, “You’re a supermodel, how come you’re doing that?” And I say it’s because I got bored of doing the supermodel thing. I like doing different things. I don’t want to be a stereotype. I say to myself each night when I get offstage, “They’re actually paying me to have fun?” You know, these ladies come in to the flirt lounge and they say, “You look like you’re having so much fun up there.” You can’t fake that. I’m surrounded by these guys who eat and sleep this. You have to respect it, because they take it so seriously. Muscle memory puts them in the same place every time to perfect every move, every turn, every flip, and every gesture. I watch James Davis, John House, and John Cook, and they’re precise and consistent every night. They make it look so effortless, but they put in so much work to be so consistent. Are you having more fun than they are? I think so! I really think so! I’m laughing, I’m giggling. This is my third time around, and I think it’s more fun than the first time. You broke box office records in your first stints with Chippendales—is that why you came back? I don’t look at the numbers. I know it’s good for

corporate to look at the numbers, but I came back for the guys. Even when I was doing something else but I was in town, I’d leave the hottest party, come over, and run backstage. John Cook—one of the main choreographers—would be like, “You want to get up there?” And I’d be like, “Can I? Can I?” And it would be a surprise to the audience. I did it a few times, and it was so fun. You’ve done pretty much all things. Anything you haven’t done? There’s still that lingering Dancing with the Stars. They’ve asked me to do it. They’ve chased down personal friends of mine, and I’m like, “How do they know?” I want to do it. It’s just the timing. They want you when they want you. I’m going back to doing some movies this year. My next one is supposed to be a comedy. That one I’m really looking forward to doing. The working title is Drunken Zombie Apocalypse, so you can imagine what that one’s like. Isn’t that every night in Vegas? Drunken Zombie Apocalypse? That would be a great one to film in Vegas. Maybe part 2 we’ll do here. Ian [Ziering, who also hosted Chippendales] ran off and did Sharknado. It was a silly movie but it took off. Maybe I’m walking in his footsteps. They filmed Sharknado 4 in Vegas… The sharks are attacking on the roof of the Stratosphere, and the Chippendales are fighting them off with their crotches. John Cook pelvis thrusts and the shark goes flying [laughs].

How old were you when you started modeling? My mother pushed me into modeling when I was 13. At that time, I was more concerned with BMX bikes, skateboarding, hanging out with my friends. Once in a while, they’d have these fashion shows, and I’d jump in because they needed a teenage boy. But then I got so involved in playing high school sports that I’d be like, “Mom, I don’t have time for that. I’ve gotta go lift weights.” I was being groomed to be a runway model from age 13, and didn’t really think about it until right now. You literally represented the changing face of American fashion. In the ’90s, I was a big Ralph Lauren model. It was that skateboarding, WASPy, kid from the Hamptons look. There weren’t too many guys of color on the runway, you know? I don’t think they were even looking at guys of color at the time. But I look back and I think, Wow, I really did something back then. It was groundbreaking. When you started out, were you worried about getting typecast? I think so, and that’s what motivated me to do something they wouldn’t expect you to do. Every time I get a script, I look at it and I say, “Is this something I’ve done before?” I don’t want to just play the handsome guy. I’ve always thought that just when they think they know who you are, you’ve got to go do something different that takes you to another level.

SUN’S OUT!

How do you enjoy the summer rays when they’re your skin’s biggest threat? The latest and greatest sunscreens might just do the trick. by CHRISTINA CLEMENTE

Over the last two decades, doctors, scientists, and researchers have warned us about the harmful effects of both UVA and UVB light, reinforced with data that shows melanoma rates in the US have doubled from 1982 to 2011. What’s more, recent studies, including one from Toxicology and Industrial Health, have shown that common environmental pollutants such as chemicals released from burning coals and gasoline significantly increase the skin’s photodamage when coupled with UVA rays. So it’s little wonder consumers are gravitating toward products

84  VEGASMAGAZINE.COM

that offer a higher sun protection factor (or SPF). According to retail analyst Karen Grant of the NPD Group, the number of skincare products with SPF 50 has quadrupled in sales since 2013. The market for color cosmetics has taken off, too, with sales of SPF 50 foundations growing from $1.6 million to $21 million in just three years. “The consumer is very much aware of the need to have even higher levels of SPF,” says Grant. “You don’t see things quadruple or grow 20-fold unless people are thinking, Wow we really need this.”

While cosmetics make for convenient sun protection, Francesca Fusco, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at New York City’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine, cautions that SPF makeup shouldn’t necessarily replace sunscreen. In fact, when examining patients under a Wood’s lamp, which reveals some types of sunscreen on the surface of the skin, Fusco found that makeup with SPF may not always evenly protect the face. Instead, she recommends applying at least an SPF 30 sunscreen five minutes prior to your makeup to ensure

ample protection. The SPF number, however, is not the only factor to keep in mind. “It’s about the correct application and the reapplication, depending on where you are,” Fusco says. For days spent outdoors, she suggests applying protection generously, all over, every two hours. But don’t neglect your skin on workdays, even if your time in the light is minimal. Says Fusco, “People don’t realize that the incidental sun exposure they get every day adds up and contributes to their risk for skin cancer and sun damage.”

SWEET ELIXIR As simple as it sounds, reading labels is crucial for your skin health. “We want broad coverage when applying topical sunscreens,” says Fusco, citing the need to shield against UVA rays (responsible for aging) and UVB rays (responsible for burning), as both contribute to sun damage. Luckily, today every major brand offers a broad spectrum with comprehensive protection— whether physically, in the form of a mineral-boasting protective barrier on the skin to block UV rays, or chemically, in which chemicals change UV rays to heat and then release the heat from the skin. New, sophisticated physical formulas (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) squash the notion that zinc only belongs on the noses of 1980s lifeguards. Hampton Sun’s SPF 45 Mineral Sunscreen Crème contains micronized zinc that “dissipates and absorbs right on the skin, so it’s pleasant to wear every day, as you should,” says the brand’s CEO and founder, Salvatore Piazzolla. Green Screen from Farmacy blends antioxidantrich Echinacea GreenEnvy with mineral-based SPF 30 for an evenly toned, protected complexion. Known to spread more thinly, chemical formulas contain filters like avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octinoxate, take 20 minutes to absorb into the skin, and “[allow] the cosmetics industry to add antiagers like peptides and still leave it effective,” says Fusco. Silky finishes in recent products like Moroccanoil’s Sun Lotion SPF 30 and Sunscreen Care Milk-Lotion Spray SPF 50+ from Clarins make the application feel more like a spa treatment. For those not sure which kind to choose, Wetforce Sports BB SPF 50+ from Shiseido and Clé de Peau’s UV Protective Emulsion for Body SPF 50+ contain both physical and chemical ingredients.

New, innovative color products make it easier for sun protection to play a part in everyday makeup regimens. Says Jameson Slattery, vice president of global marketing at Colorescience, “Consumers are becoming more educated about the need to use sun protection daily, and not just on weekends or when they are visiting the beach. They’re looking for multifunctional products that elegantly combine high-quality SPF into their existing beauty routine.” New broad-spectrum foundations like Giorgio Armani’s SPF 25 Power Fabric and Dior’s SPF 50 Dreamskin Perfect Skin Cushion do the trick, providing a smooth complexion as well as a sun barrier. “Many of these products are allowing the consumer a one-product solution that can give you blemish correction and protection at the same time. That’s where we’re seeing the strongest growth,” says the NPD Group’s Karen Grant. And when used alongside other sun protectants, these multitasking cosmetics will reduce the risk of missing a spot or two. “If you have an SPF in your primer and foundation, it’s unlikely that once you’re applying those products you’re going to miss the same spot on your face with multiple products,” says Slattery, who adds that Colorescience’s SPF 50 Sunforgettable brush-on sunscreen, with its mineral powder that can be layered seamlessly over a full face of makeup (on the go, no less), was specifically developed for all-day reapplication.

BRONZED BEAUTY These days, people are more likely to use sunscreen than they were 30 years ago—but still, says Lane Smith, MD, board-certified plastic surgeon at Smith Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, most people don’t apply enough or they are vying for that golden glow. “The biggest issue regarding sunscreen use with my patients is not applying enough or often enough, and some still like to tan, and that is a problem,” says Smith, who recommends a minimum of broad-spectrum and water-resistant SPF 30 every two hours. And this also goes for days when the sun is tucked behind clouds. “When there is cloud cover or when you’re using a sun shade, there is a possibility of certain UV rays coming through,” says H.L. Greenberg, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Las Vegas Dermatology. Adds Smith, “Remember, just driving to and from work bathes the skin in harmful UVA radiation.” But this is by no means a call to stay indoors. “Even if patients were sun worshippers in their youth, regular sunscreen use at any age can help reverse some of the signs of skin aging. It is never too late to start a good sunscreen regimen,” Smith says. And with so many options, it’s never been easier—or looked better—to practice safe sun.

UFC’S INTERNATIONAL RETURNS TO VEGAS IN JULY.

Mixed martial arts super fans, Octagon Girls, celebs, and athletes will converge for the UFC’s annual International Fight Week, held July 5–9 this year. Ultimate Fighting Championship, which was acquired by WME/IMG last year, promotes all combat sports over that blowout week. It’s the sixth annual fight week in Vegas, and this year’s event includes three consecutive events inside T-Mobile Arena: The Ultimate Fighter reality TV series crowns its winner during a live finale; a UFC Fight Night card on Fox Sports; and the UFC 213 payper-view event. But one of the big draws for fans is the annual UFC Fan Expo, where MMA fighters sign autographs and take part in open Q&A sessions; there’s a huge EA Sports station, and lots of combat sports events to take in. YOU, UNPLUGGED

Having trouble loosening your death grip on that iPhone? Perhaps tucking it into a special “cell phone sleeping bag” in Mandarin Oriental’s tender care will help. The Spa’s new Digital Wellness Escape is good motivation for those so afraid of missing a text they sneak their device into spa mobile-free zones (guilty!). Digital babies take a nap in special phone lockers, while Himalayan salt lamps absorb electromagnetic fields. Guests indulge in the 11-step rejuvenating Tian Ouan Thermal Experience (meant to relieve stress, detoxify, and increase blood circulation) and take home a tip sheet and keepsake phone cover. Need more motivation to detox? Half-day Digital Wellness retreats, this year taking place on June 21 and September 22, include yoga, a nutrition lecture, and guided meditation, and can be followed by spa services. The Cosmopolitan multiplies Vegas luxe to the nth power: a 100,000square-foot casino, three pools, 32 spa treatment rooms and suites, a Turkish-style hammam, and restaurants that include outposts of Scarpetta, Estiatorio Milos, and Beauty & Essex. Its edgy art collection (extending from the top floor to the parking garage), wild New Year’s Eve performances, and outdoor concerts under the Boulevard Pool’s massive marquee (go for the boozy ice-skating in winter) have secured Cosmo’s spot as the favorite of Vegas’s hippest

LIVING LAS VEGAS This mesa may look unforgiving, but the views—from both upward salute and downward dog—are spectacular. Your helicopter (and some bubbly) await after your sweat session. Heli-Namaste!

HOW TO: RISE ABOVE NEED TO GET SOMEWHERE… LIKE A YOGA CLASS? SUMMON YOUR CHOPPER! YOU’RE NOT PRETENTIOUS, YOU’RE PRACTICAL.

Here are some words I hope you find comforting: You are not selling out on festival culture by taking a helicopter to EDC. There comes a time when we can all recognize that a glittery posterior stuck to the seat of a car in thousand-degree Vegas heat is not a necessary part of the experience. Likewise, heli-ubering to CES, flying a date to the base of the Grand Canyon, and now, choppering to

yoga—are beginning to spell convenience over pretention. This is the seventh year Maverick Helicopters is transporting festivalgoers to EDC, says vice president of marketing Bryan Kroten. “We’re moving 400 to 500 people a night,” he says. “Anyone can fly there via helicopter. Some groups charter it, but we also offer per-person packages, so you never know who

you’ll be sitting next to.” There are more helicopters in the Las Vegas market than anywhere else in the world, he says, which is making helicopter travel in the city a “mainstream” option. With the bulk of its flights taking visitors into the Grand Canyon (a two- ½ hour sunset trip from the Strip that lands for Champagne in the base of the canyon and returns over the city lights is only

$574 per person), “to be able to do offshoots like heliyoga is just modernizing the experience,” he says. And let’s face it: There are some things you can only do by helicopter. On a recent trip with Silent Savasana cofounder Dray Gardner for Maverick’s new HeliYogaLimitless flight, we flew over the Technicolor-hued Rainbow Vistas to land atop a perilous-looking

mesa in Valley of Fire, where, with Gardner’s voice over headphones coaching us through a series of poses, we balanced over an endless, ancient view. Inaccessible by any other form of travel, it’s as modern a perspective shift as you can get, and some would say a bargain. Maverick Aviation Group; 702-261-0007; maverick helicopter.com
