CHANGES IN LATITUDE Watching the fireworks from atop Lone Mountain on the Fourth of July, I was in awe
looking down at the vast view of our stunning city. From there, you could see the entire valley including the 4 miles of bright lights on the Las Vegas Strip. It was so peaceful and serene, yet 20 miles away there were more than 300,000 people celebrating the holiday, taking in all the entertainment and fine dining that Las Vegas has to offer. With autumn now upon us (my favorite season of the year), I’m looking forward to the picturesque beauty of the leaves changing colors and the smell of pines. (Yes, we have those in Las Vegas, too.) I moved to Las Vegas more than 30 years ago from the Midwest to escape the snow and bask in year-round sunshine. And in Las Vegas, I can still capture the season with a short 30-minute drive up to Mount Charleston. Along with the anticipation of cooler weather, it’s my favorite time of the year for sports, and while we won’t be able to attend a Las Vegas Raiders game here for a couple of years, Las Vegans are definitely ready to see our first professional sports team, the Vegas Golden Knights, hit the ice. This fall also marks a new beginning as Vegas joins Modern Luxury, which enables us to bring you even more fabulous luxury coverage, from fashion to travel—both domestic and international—and benefit from our now enormous network of 83 magazines in 24 markets! We had a fantastic summer: Tyson Beckford, our summer cover star, hosted our incredible anniversary party and took selfies all night with his fans. Ever read those “runway to realway” pages in fashion magazines, which gently strip away all the shocking, dissonant or just plain wacky elements of runway ensembles so you can safely incorporate the season’s trend—say, Victorian collars or the color red—into your everyday look? Feel free to do this exercise on your own while reading this issue, but we’re bucking the formula. We’re giving you permission to go for a head-to-toe embroidered velvet Russian doll look (big trends at Gucci and Naeem Khan this year—although I suggest waiting for the temperature to dip below 80 F before you try this). I’m going for one of my favorites from the fall/winter runways, a Tory Burch ensemble that rips off the Delft blue pattern from your grandma’s china and makes it fearlessly sexy. After all, this is Las Vegas—not the place you should feel you need to water down the trends to make them acceptable for the PTA meeting. We’re encouraging you to break every fashion rule you can or at least wear something you’d consider a little risky back home. No judgment! You guys in your Royal Tenenbaumsinspired evening athleisure and ladies in your sequined sausage casings teetering around on 7-inch heels make us who we are, or at least contribute to the fl avor. Look around the casino: We even make it easier by installing convenient vending machines that sell comfy fl ats so you don’t have to be that girl (you know the one) a few hours from now. Also in our pages, we’re pulling back the curtains—and
peering in the beauty cabinets—of some of our favorite local women of style, each with her own beautiful aesthetic. (Which starts, as I can tell you from knowing them, with being lovely on the inside.) Tipsy Robot (thetipsyrobot.com), the long-awaited cocktail bar staffed by two would-be assembly line robotic arms, is now open at Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile Shops. Instead of waving down your bartender for a drink, you file your order in an app and watch it pour from ceiling-mounted bottles into cocktail shakers. The (presumably nonunion) robots are expected to make your drink within 60 to 90 seconds. If you’re unsure a robot can mix your cocktail the way you like it, take solace knowing the human brain behind Tipsy Robot’s recipes is Southern Glazer’s master mixologist and Bartender Hall of Fame award winner Francesco Lafranconi. Modernist Cuisine Gallery (modernistcuisinegallery.com) opened in May at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, placing food front, center and massive for your, ahem, consumption. Which begged two questions: Where do you find inspiration for your striking images? “When I decided about a decade ago to create the cookbook Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking, I saw an exciting opportunity to do something new in food photography—to portray food in new and unexpected ways that simultaneously draw readers in and illustrate the science at work in cooking. My team and I looked into the idea of selling prints, and it became clear that the only way forward would be to open our own gallery.” Who collects 10-foot-tall images of breadcrumb landscapes and chard? “I think that my photography speaks to people for whom the specific subject in the photo and the broader topic of food are important parts of their lives. I can say that people definitely like food—all of our homes include a place to cook and eat. And they clearly also like photos of food—witness Instagram. There has never been a better time to love food. Art that you have in your home or office should be something that delights and engages you on a daily basis. I hope that my photographs allow people to express how food makes them feel and who they are.” –Don Chareunsy

Instagram and the blog world know Dani Capps as half of @itsthoseblondes and thoseblondes.com, both a heady mix of girl power motivation, beauty tips and hilarity. The onetime makeup artist earned her stripes helping put Rain Cosmetics in front of the celebs who would make it famous (Holly Madison, Lara Croft, Michael Boychuck). When she met Sloan Hadfield (Miss Nevada USA, 2005) nearly 10 years ago, “We connected over our shared vision,” Capps says. “Makeup doesn’t make you beautiful, it only enhances your natural beauty.” These days, she says, makeup is confusing. “You can’t go 10 minutes without being bombarded with poreless, airbrushed, filtered photos. Am I supposed to look like this? We wanted to focus on the fun and the playful side of makeup, and less of the ‘fix me!’ part.” Enter the duo’s new brand, Thea Cosmetics (theacosmetics.com), a line of hypoallergenic, fragrance- and paraben-free matte and demi-matte lipsticks with a mission: “A portion of all Thea’s proceeds goes toward organizations that encourage girls, teens and women to pursue education and build confidence and self-esteem.” Even these two gorgeous women know that lipstick isn’t a silver bullet. “We’re not models; we’re not 22,” Capps laughs. “This is how we look in Thea, and this is our style. We have pores and some rolls, but we’re having fun.” And with the gorgeous hues of their first collection, with names like “Dark Desert Highway,” “Page Me” and “Bad Mama Jama,” you will, too. –Briar Davis

In a city known for excess, Panacea (panacealv.com) stands out like an orange-robed monk meditating in the middle of a smoky casino floor. The new plant-based restaurant, juice bar and wellness center in Boca Park allows you to experience the healing power of food, Zen out and engage with Vegas’ health-minded community, says Shane Stuart, co-founder of Panacea, who also opened one of the city’s first health restaurants, Downtown’s now-defunct Grassroots Juice Bar. “Panacea isn’t just about food,” says Stuart. “We’re about people coming together, and raising the overall health and energy of the Vegas community.” That’s why Panacea also offers tea ceremonies and events that bring the community together to learn and talk about wellness. But that’s not to say the menu is an afterthought. Panacea, for example, serves the perfect guilt-free cheat meal: the Ultimate burger—a mimic of an In-n-Out Burger that swaps beef for a black bean, quinoa, farrow and mushroom patty—and an organic vegetable and fruit smoothie that tastes just like a mint chocolate chip milkshake. After lunch, settle in with your laptop and an otherworldly coffee. “We serve lattes made with indigenous superfoods like beetroot, spirulina and matcha maca,” says Stuart. They were all huge superstars, but the sum was still greater than its parts, and that’s how we feel. We all had various careers and then we got into a room and something magical happened. There is no holding a candle to Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. But we do have a guy who has a big ol’ curl in the middle of his forehead: Carlos and Dean Martin have a similar look going on! (Laughs) Is there anything you want to experience while you’re in town?

Bold, uncompromising and impossible to pin down to a genre, Raymond Pettibon is revered as one of America’s most unique creators of contemporary art. THE HIGHLIGHTS Guests loaded their plates at a caviar bar; carving stations served MB Steak’s dry-aged tomahawk and Wagyu strip loin, and decadent side dishes like creamed corn with crab. THE PARTY Bellusso Jewelers at Palazzo hosted its annual party to toast the JCK jewelry industry show on June 4, one of the most anticipated (and hard-to-get!) invitations of the week, held in—and spilling out of—the store. THE GUESTS Industry luminaries, company executives and some of Las Vegas Luxury Holdings’ most devoted customers came to see and be seen in their best jewels. Alan Bekhor believes love for jewelry and watches is the key to building a cohesive collection. “The most enjoyable part of the business for me is being able to off er merchandise that people love,” says the 40-year-old president and COO of LV Luxury Holdings, which owns Bellusso in Palazzo, Ca’d’Oro (Venetian & Pa la zzo), Horologio ( Venetian), and Van Cleef & Arpels at Th e Forum Shops at Caesars. “It’s always a happy moment in our clients’ lives when they come in the store and walk away with a fine timepiece or beautiful piece of jewelry.” Bekhor knows a thing or two about coveted watches and jewelry; he
joined his father Ezra Bekhor’s company 17 years ago. But it wasn’t always his plan. “I grew up in Los Angeles and the jewelry business was exclusively in Las Vegas,” he says. “I really saw the business only when we took family vacations to Las Vegas and my father would take me with him to the stores. It wasn’t until 1999, when my father opened his fi rst store at Venetian, Ca’d’Oro, and I was out of college and working in another industry did this ever cross my mind. He had added many luxury and well-known Swiss brands such as Omega and Tag Heuer that piqued my interest.” Bekhor and his teams now regularly work with

The best watches for starting a collection, he says, “can be worn every day and are appropriate for any occasion—to work with a suit, to a night on the town, and to the beach.” Then diversify by your needs, adding a GMT for travel, or a watch with a power reserve. “Collections that I’ve enjoyed the most are brands that have a rich history and continue to innovate,” he says—key markers that distinguish collectible pieces from the rest. “It’s impossible to pick just one, but of the brands that we are authorized dealers for, I would say the following two are favorites: Overseas by Vacheron Constantin and the Portugieser by IWC.” The perfect starter
piece for women? “A pair of diamond studs. “They are versatile, never go out of style, can be worn every day, and are timeless,” he says. Most importantly when starting a collection, he says, do a bit of research and establish your style. “Spend some time reading and learning about the different watch manufacturers or jewelry designers. an and Dean Caten are the identical twin Canadian brothers behind the fierce luxury brand DSquared2, whose clothing, accessories, fragrances and eyewear have adorned every bold name you can imagine, from Britney Spears and Madonna to Justin Timberlake and Fergie (to name a few), and they’ve bet big on Vegas this year. We caught up with the dynamic duo when a certain friend of theirs named Ricky Martin dropped by to help them open their new store. Why was this year the right time to open the fourth DSquared2 store in the United States, at The Shops at Crystals?
Las Vegas felt like it would make sense for us to have a stand-alone store. It’s Sin City—fun, extravagant and a gem. Crystals is home to many luxury brands, and it was the right fit at the right time. What did you have in mind in designing Ricky Martin’s new residency at Park Theater at Monte Carlo? It was a very
collaborative process, and the timing, coincidentally, was perfect with the opening of our store. We wanted to help bring the different sections of Ricky’s show to life. What are we going to see from DSquared2 this fall? We like mashing
up themes and ideas. Our fall runway collection is ‘glunge’—glamorous grunge. Lots of oversize knits, our signature plaid in a variety of silhouettes and statement outerwear mixed with leather and fun accents.

CONNECTION Celebrating half a century of partnerships in professional golf, the ties between the game and the Swiss watchmaker run deep. By Mike Espindle
Nowhere was Rolex’s long-running association with professional golf more apparent than at the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia this spring, where Rolex has been a key sponsor since 1999. While the world watched the electrifying sudden-death victory of Spaniard Sergio Garcia over Brit Justin Rose, guests of Rolex enjoyed prime viewing opportunities; unmatched hospitality at the Rolex House near the first hole; as well as the company and insight of some of the game’s legends, who stopped by during the tournament. The scene was as dramatic as you might expect—chock full of exciting moments and memories. “When I was coming up,” former Masters champion Tom Watson shares, “I always admired the gold Rolex

watches of the top players.” The famously humble golfer, who won in 1977 and 1981, adds: “My goal was to treat myself to a Rolex after I made a million dollars in winnings.” Gary Player, the South African golf legend who was the fi rst non-American to win the Masters in 1961 (he won again in 1974 and 1978), recalls: “Back then, I was taking on Arnold Palmer in his own house, so to speak, and the fans were—understandably—not in my corner.” Still, Rolex was always a welcoming presence for the feisty champion. While the Rolex-golf connection runs deep, some of the watchmaker’s most recent models unveiled at the Baselworld watch and jewelry show in Switzerland seem particularly apt for the links. Don’t want your interior design to look just like the neighbors’? Shelley Gorman’s River North has a few curiosities that will set you apart. By Spencer Lubitz // Photography by Emily Wilson
L
ike so many good ideas, designer Shelley Gorman’s interior design store River North was born out of frustration. The owner of design f irm SKG Designs, which works on remodel and new construction projects all over Summerlin, Gorman says she decided to open her first retail space after spending countless hours looking for pieces to satisfy her customers’ distinct tastes. “There aren’t a lot of stores in Las Vegas where you can walk through with your client and get feedback,” she says. So she opened her own. Having quickly outgrown the space it originally occupied on a second floor in The Market LV in Tivoli Village, Gorman recently relocated to a larger storefront on the ground floor, where buyers can also order Gorman’s custom-designed furniture. “I love designing

furniture,” she says. “If I can’t find it, I’ll design it and build it.” Gorman’s tastes run toward the quirky—and her eclectic selection of furniture, lighting, art, rugs and accessories reveals a love of mixed media. Dramatic natural tree root sculptures sit on industrial iron bases; graceful iron figures do a swan dive down walls; and even fashion accessories such as Cynthia Desser jewelry reflect Gorman’s aesthetic. “She is my alter ego in the jewelry world. I love her mix of metals, shagreen and metallics!” she enthuses. Other unique objects include hand-thrown ceramics by Portland, Ore., ceramic artist Jessica Wertz and French (by way of Miami) candle company Alixx, whose natural wax candles occupy mouth-blown glass and handmade ceramic cylinders. CAESARS PALACE Caesars is preparing to unveil a new look for the villas on the 29th floor of its Palace Tower. The renovations are part of a two-year project to refresh more than 800 suites in the Caesars Entertainment portfolio. Among the most impressive redesigns is the Julius Executive Duplex Suite at the Julius Tower. This two-story, 1,438-square-foot space features Strip views, floor-to-ceiling windows and a stone bathroom. Perks include airport limo service and no resort fees. Speaking of perks, if you’re staying in a villa or penthouse at Nobu Hotel, you can order a master sushi chef to your room to prepare your meal. Caesars’ $25,000-per-night Titus Villa even comes with its own butler, and the new Augustus Spa Suite has its own sauna. COSMOPOLITAN Starting from scratch—literally, as the floors had been empty—Cosmopolitan has transformed the top of its Boulevard Tower into a 63,000-squarefoot luxury experience to make guests feel like 007. Acclaimed designers Daun Curry, Adam Tihany and Richmond International, who all worked as consultants to Marnell Companies, contributed to the 21 Boulevard Penthouses, which are larger than most homes—2,000 to 5,000 square feet—and feature in-suite bars where one can enjoy a vodka martini shaken or stirred. The biggest lure for these big spenders is the private gaming salon with the Strip in full view. For their eyes only, of course.

the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River, Elizabeth Olsen climbs onstage inside the iconic Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes. Looking old-school glam in a plunging blushcolored Miu Miu gown, she takes in the scene, smiling as the audience delivers its enthusiastic applause and Sheridan introduces the film. It is not Olsen’s first time at Cannes, but from her perspective, it might as well be. “The first time I was here, I didn’t soak it in,” says the actress during our beachside stroll the next day. “I was overwhelmed, and I don’t have very many memories of being present.” This time would be different, she determined, starting with the decision to clutch her pink heels in her hand while onstage. “During Sundance, I had a bit of a panic attack when we were onstage. You have all the lights on you, and there’s really no point of focus. I hate it. It freaks me out. So, I thought, ‘I’m going to take my shoes off.’ And I remember every moment,” she says. As not even a 2am post-premiere photo call manages to rattle the actress, you get the sense Olsen knows not only how to navigate the chaos that is the world’s most renowned film festival, but is also competently steering a career that, in the past seven years, has launched her to fame far beyond what maybe even she expected. “Now that I feel a bit more solid about what I’m making and I have a very clear intention for myself, I’m a happier person,” explains the 28-year-old. “I’ve started to figure out how I want to function as a human being in the world and balance it with work.” She may feel like she is only now coming into herself, but from the outside, it seems like Olsen has always had a strong sense of direction.
While the actress has, in the past seven years, made an impressive 18 films—ranging from wellreceived indies like Martha Marcy May Marlene to major blockbusters like Godzilla and The Avengers films—her love of acting and performing was established long before her 21st birthday. The youngest sister of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley made her on-screen debut at age 4 in her siblings’ films, before deciding at age 7 she would not pursue the same path as her famous sisters. “I did try and audition when I was younger. I thought, ‘Well that sounds fun. I see what my sisters do.’ I went on a few auditions, Spy Kids being the first one, and they asked me to read the script. It looked bigger than the Bible to me,” Olsen recalls. “I didn’t understand why I would ever read something that big. I realized I would miss out on after-school sports and forfeit things I enjoyed doing at a young age. My dad had me write a list of pros and cons, and the cons side was bigger. I decided to stick to my after-school activities.” Despite the 15-year hole in her résumé, Olsen never gave up acting. “The [activities] my family [came out to support] me in were probably painful to watch,” she laughs. “From ballet recitals to plays to some experimental things—it was constant. But [these] were hobbies, not a job.” They were, however, the things she cared about the most. After high school, Olsen enrolled at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she learned the discipline of the craft, even spending a semester at the Moscow Art Theatre in Russia. “All these teachers [were] trying to scare [us], letting [us] know that [acting] is hard and you’re going to be rejected 99 percent of the time. Every time someone said it to me, it was a challenge, like, ‘I’ll show you.’” That, she did. Olsen’s breakout role came as the titular character in Martha Marcy May Marlene, about a young girl who, after several

The film, which garnered numerous critics’ awards and brought her to Cannes for the first time, launched a noteworthy career out of the gate. “I’m so lucky [director] Sean Durkin wanted to go with someone who had literally no film experience,” says Olsen. “I think the reason Sean liked the idea was because I didn’t know what I looked like on camera, and I didn’t care about what angle of my face looked good. It added to the awkwardness of Martha.” The experience, which Olsen says took place during a restless time in her personal life, cemented her love for acting. “My favorite thing about working and being on set as an actor is having to be so present in what you’re doing,” she says. “It’s such a relief—it’s almost meditative. The only thing that matters is the moment.” Her glorious debut was more luck than strategy, Olsen admits. She eagerly tried out for guest roles on TV procedurals like CSI and Blue Bloods early on in her career, reading every script that came her way. “[In the beginning] I was like, ‘What? You want to hire me? Sign me up!’ I was a mess,” she laughs. “But, now, there’s more of an intention behind it. I’m happy to go from one project to the next, but there has to be a reason to do it. And if there isn’t, then I’m going to be unemployed and figure out how to keep myself busy.” She was immediately drawn to no-nonsense FBI Agent Jane Banner in the thriller Wind River, which recently hit theaters and required learning how to operate a gun and assert authority in dangerous situations. “I’m scared of everything, and I get to play someone who is in control and confident,” she says. “To get to find that inside of you is a thrilling thing to do.” Olsen also looks for films with social commentary, like Ingrid Goes West, where she stars as a social media influencer who becomes the obsession of a mentally unstable fan. “I’m hoping to generate a better through line within the work I’m interested in and the work I find intriguing,” she says, “which doesn’t mean it’s all serious and poignant messages. I also think a sense of humor is important.”
The world of social media is still a mystery to Olsen, who only started exploring Instagram as a way to research her character. Even the idea of a public persona appears to perplex the actress, who, early on, received tips from her sisters about life in the spotlight. “They’re very tight-lipped—notoriously so—and I was not caring what I was saying [in interviews] because I’d assumed no one would read it,” says Olsen. “That’s when we’d have conversations. They’d say, ‘You know, even if you don’t think anyone’s going to read this article, someone might pull the quote later for [something else].’ It’s all part of how you hope someone interprets you, and how they frame who you are and the work you do.” That advice is now what keeps her from divulging much about her private life, which, according to news sources, currently includes musician boyfriend Robbie Arnett. “If it only involves me, then I’ll share it, but if it involves another party, ever, then I won’t,” she states. “I don’t want to tell anyone else’s story.” Olsen’s story is that she is laying down roots. For the past 2 ½ years, she has lived in Los Angeles, where she was raised, and feels like it is home. “In New York, I felt so confined to such a small space, and I would feel guilty if I wasn’t out all day,” she says. “[Here] I have friends over for dinner more nights than I don’t. I take advantage of having a deck. I cook more than I ever did in New York. I don’t feel bad about being in my home.” So much so that she eventually sees herself filling it with a family of her own. “I just bought a house for the first time. It’s very exciting. I’m renovating it right now, which has been so much fun and stimulating creatively,” she says. “But I was also thinking, ‘There’s this small room upstairs, which would be good for a kid.’ I don’t know where things will lead, but I do think about it in that way: ‘I think I could raise kids here.’” That, however, seems to be way off in the future. At this point in time, Olsen looks forward to another milestone. “Your 30s sounds like the best decade for a woman. I can’t wait!” she exclaims. “I still deal with so many anxieties of how I come across. I’ll go home at night, spinning with a guilt complex of, ‘Did I say something stupid to that person who I respect? Do they think I’m a freak?’ I don’t want to think like that anymore. What’s so beautiful about being older and wiser is you are sitting heavier in your shoes with your feet on the ground.” Or, as the case may be for Olsen, with your shoes clutched in your hand.

This 1-mile segment of the path runs between Lovers Point and the aquarium on Cannery Row and is rich with natural wonders—frothy waves, blues from sky to sea, seals on the shore. And the wait is over with the debut of Sparrow + Wolf in the heart of Chinatown. “Opening in Chinatown was a no-brainer being such a food destination. Obviously, there’s not a lot of American food, but you’re already garnering the attention of everyone by just being there.” Howard sees Sparrow in a “different niche” similar to Chinatown newcomers Sand Dollar Lounge and Golden Tiki. A swath of the menu is cooked over fire in a custom-made grill, harkening to his Midwestern roots, but the versatile chef is comfortable with his surroundings. “I have a big love for Asian food. I have a lot of Asian influence around me” ranging from his in-laws and from one of his original jobs at The Venetian’s Tsunami. But Howard wants more than just a restaurant. “Even more than the food, the goal is to create a dinner party every night and bring people together around a table. Newly opened in the Ha rd Roc k Hotel & Casino —it even ha s it s ow n va let parking!—MB Steak is a welcome addition to Las Vegas’ legendarily hot prime-beef scene. Some MB dishes take steakhouse fare to new levels, with standouts that include the buttery A5 Japanese Wagyu, a dry-aged tomahawk that more than earns its name, and souped-up sides such as Brussels sprouts with pickled shallots, creamed spinach augmented by truff le Gouda, and mushroom-studded grits finished with pecorino. Though co-owner Michael Morton is known for doing fantastic restaurants around town—he started N9NE, which arguably launched Sin City’s modern steakhouse craze; and owns the winecentric La Cave at Wynn, tapas-formatted

Crush in MGM Grand and cool downtown Mexican eatery La Comida—for this one he has particular incentive to reach for greatness. A partnership between Michael and his brother David Morton (MB Steak’s name stands for My Brothers), the restaurant also serves as a tribute to father Arnie Morton, who passed away in 2005. Michael feels certain his dad would be pleased with MB and his approval would go beyond the beef. “I think our father would be proud of the nonsteak items on the menu,” he says. “The sea scallops were inspired by him. Scallops were his favorite thing. Every menu he ever did had scallops on it.” Michael, who’s enjoyed great success on the Vegas food landscape, learned the restaurant business by toiling for Arnie. “I swept floors, did linen orders, worked every station,” he says. “I cut whole lobsters in half, pulled out

the stomachs, poured the cream in, gave them a splash of butter and threw them in the oven. I was a server and a busboy. This was during high school and after college.” David, who traded commodities before jumping into the food biz by launching DMK Restaurants, found inspiration in how his father handled himself as a restaurant owner: It was on display whenever the family dined together at one of Arnie’s spots. “Two things happened religiously,” David remembers. “We always sat facing the door because, God forbid, a guest walked in and was unattended. Dad would jump up and take care of the person himself. He always had a comment for the chef; while we ate, they’d banter about little things to tweak. If the phone rang more than twice he jumped up to answer it. He was maniacal about that.” Th e hands-on attitude is refl ected in MB’s stylishly masculine design that includes charredwood paneling downstairs, a private cocktail lounge, cool and modern chandelier presiding over the main dining room, and a living wall upstairs. Considering it all, Michael concludes, “Th is would have spoken to my dad so much. Higher Spirit It may be the only one of its kind, but Adam Levine and Sammy Hagar’s Santo mezquila, the love child of mezcal and tequila, is having a moment. By Elaine and Scott Harris
It’s like a rock ’n’ roll dream come true: Two worldrenowned musical icons, Adam Levine and Sammy Hagar, have drinks in Cabo, mix a little mezcal and tequila, and emerge with their own spirit, Santo. Quickly becoming a fixture on Las Vegas cocktail lists, the unique blend of 100 percent Blue Weber agave and 100 percent Espadin agave that give this spirit its earthy mellow aromas and intricate herbal complexity is layered with floral and fruit notes and light smoke. Levine let us in on his friendship with Hagar and on inventing the world’s first “mezquila.” How would you describe Santo?
It’s a unique combination of tequila and mezcal because it’s never been done before; but the result is a familiar, comfortable taste. It’s not too smoky and it doesn’t have a strong tequila after-bite.

You must have been besieged by other offers to create a beverage brand. What turned you toward tequila and mezcal—and working with Sammy Hagar?

I’ve always been interested in branching into the spirits world, but it was never the right opportunity. We didn’t set out to create an entirely new spirits brand, or a spirits brand at all. It happened really organically: We were having some mezcal and tequila in Mexico, mixed the drinks and discovered a hit. Did you see this collaboration like a musical partnership?
Not at first, as we weren’t setting out to do that. But we discussed it more and more and realized the actual potential of the product coming together. Obviously, the element of the two of us coming together as friends and partners was too unique and similar to the idea of mixing mezcal and tequila. Sammy has numerous stories in his autobiography Red about being at the right place at the right time to create businesses. Do you believe Santo will be yet another blockbuster outlet of your combined creativity?
I hope so, yes. We’re still in the early stages of the product’s release but it’s been very promising so far and we are happy with the territories we’re adding so quickly. We’re always working on [a] new creative way to get the brand out there. Have you created any signature cocktails with Santo, or are there any foods it goes best with?
I don’t have a signature cocktail with Santo, but that’s because I think that it should be drunk straight up, over ice.

The rising mercury brought equally hot happenings this summer. The National Hockey League and Adidas hosted a fan event at Wynn Las Vegas to reveal the new Vegas Golden Knights jerseys. On June 21, the NHL Awards Show and Expansion Draft was held at T-Mobile Arena, and UFC’s International Fight Week took place the first week of July, with highlights including the Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale (shown on Fox Sports 1) and a Women of UFC panel. Lining the top of Hoover Dam, fashion insiders were given white parasols to block the sun’s rays as model/producer Jessica Minh Anh transformed the dam into her own catwalk (she has staged shows at London’s Tower Bridge, the Eiffel Tower, and the vertiginous Grand Canyon Skywalk). To celebrate the beginning of summer, Andiron Steak & Sea celebrated its second annual White Party. Guests dived into a poke bar, carving and grilling stations, and signature cocktails. Chefs and co-owners Bruce and Eric Bromberg opened Blue Ribbon at The Cosmopolitan, with a blowout party for hundreds of friends, family and Vegas influencers. Guests enjoyed towering raw bars, cocktails and passed samples from the restaurant’s new menu. The Women’s Research Institute of Nevada met to welcome inductees into its New Leadership Program, where Jenna Morton, whose Peace by Pax project creates sustainable economic opportunity in the Jordanian-Syrian border village of Umm al-Jimal, was the keynote speaker. With crowning of a new Miss Nevada, awards for angels of the medical field, and more, here are this issue’s snapshots. –The Editors

his year, Hindustan Times called actress Deepika Padukone a “fierce warrior princess” on the Cannes red carpet for her green Chloe Gosselin shoes and matching green smoky eyes. Gosselin’s dozens of high-profile devotees include Olivia Munn, Celine Dion, Andra Day and Selma Blair. Madonna wearing her Datura pump in Interview magazine, Tori Amos performing at the Viktor & Rolf anniversary in her Hyacinth sandal and Kendall Jenner out and about in her Larkspur sandal are favorite recent celeb moments. But most don’t know that inspiration often strikes Gosselin when she’s at home—close to the Red Rock Conservation Area—where she’s lived for a decade with fiancé David Copperfield, and full time since their daughter started school here four years ago. So does a certain magician influence her shows, which have been described as “magical” by fashion editors? “We are really close and always create side by side,” she says. “David took his crazy childhood dream and made it a reality!
