The Faroe Islands offer unique nature, exciting history and a rich culture. There are birds, sheep, and friendly people. There is a captivating silence, which is only broken by cascading waterfalls and eardeafining surf. Take your senses with you on this self guided road trip.

Day 1: Arrival with Atlantic Airways. Pick up your rental car at the airport. Experience the island of Vágoy on your own. We recommend a visit to the small village of Gásadalur. From here you can walk out on marked nature trails and enjoy the impressive view over Tindhólmur, don’t miss the beautiful waterfall that runs in to the ocean. Spend the night in Vágoy. Day 2: We recommend on your way north to go on a two hour boat trip to Vestmanna birdcliffs*, where the boat takes you in between the cliffs and in to grottoes, and also visit the unique Saga Museum. Continue on to the village of Tjørnuvík, that is surrounded by steep mountains. Here you can see the impressive rock formations the Giant and the Witch. Cross the bridge, that connects the islands of Eysturoy and Streymoy, and continue to the village of Eiði. Above the village is a small cosy park. A local legend tells that up on a high mountain in Kunoy lies a plank from Noah’s ark. Clams and sea shells grow on it. People, who have gotten lost in the fog have seen the plank, but no one who has gone looking for it has ever found it. MONDAY: Arrival with Atlantic Airways at Vágar Airport. Pick up your rental car at the airport. Drive to the village of Miðvágur, where the old nature path leads you out to Trælanípan. Enjoy the undulation of the ocean and the voices of the birds filling the sky. The path goes along the largest fresh water lake in the Faroe Islands, Leitisvatn. See the waterfall Bøsdalafossur and the free standing cliff Geituskoradrangur. For more information visit the tourist office in Miðvágur before going on the hike. Also visit the villages of Gásadalur and Bøur. Spend the night on Eysturoy. TUESDAY: The natural harbor in the village of Gjógv is an attraction every one should take time to see. If you walk along the edge of the crevice you might see some puffins coming out of their nests on their way out to the ocean to get food for their young. At the end of the crevice, facing the open ocean, it is possible to enjoy the view from Crown Princess Mary’s Bench. Walk the short distance to the top of Beinisvørð, where a grand panorama view opens up and in the most beautiful way reveals the essence of the Faroe Islands in one glance, with fjords and valleys, villages and mountains, birds and sheep, nature and man. On the northern part of the island lies the village of Sandvík, which is known in the Faroese Saga as the village where one of the greatest chieftains, Sigmundur Brestisson, was murdered on the beach after swimming from the island of Skúvoy trying to escape Tróndur í Gøtu. – AN UNTOLD STORY The traditional Faroese cuisine has evolved over centuries in it own unique way because of the islands remote geographic location in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is both simple and complex at the same time. We welcome you on a gastronomical journey with an emphasis on local food, culture, traditions and unbelievable scenery.

The sightseeing tour is dependent on weather, but look forward to a day of great look out points, photo opportunities and being entertained by the guides’ many stories. Lunch is served at a private residence in cozy surroundings where you have the opportunity to make small talk with the host and ask questions about Faroese cuisine. Back in Tórshavn there is an opportunity to experience a beer tasting at Kafe Kaspar, where taste samples from the two Faroese breweries, Okkara and Føroya Bjór, are served. Føroya Bjór has won many awards and gotten recognition for their beer. Afterwards enjoy dinner at Hotel Hafnia’s fine restaurant.

Imagine hiking from village to village in the magnificent Faroese scenery. While you are still refreshed and high from the hike, you can sit down to a concert in a remote and rustic place and enjoy some Faroese musical composition. The hiking festival is the perfect combination of hiking and music. The beauty of the islands is surprisingly different, differing in its roughness and dramatic appearance. We have put together a program where you will e.g. experience the Cultural Centre of Kirkjubøur, the bird island of Mykines, a grotto concert, hiking to the award-winning Hvannhagi on the island of Suðuroy, hiking to the top of the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur. You will visit the capital of Tórshavn and enjoy a Faroese cultural evening. Every hike provides a new, exciting destination with a concert in a small, intimate venue. The music experience will vary from a Faroese solo vocalist to an ensemble of Faroese classical musicians playing Faroese composed music. We move with caution, leaving no trace. Enjoy the sounds of music, nature and the stunning views. See detailed program on our website www.greengate.fo
