The Faroe Islands offer unique nature, exciting history and a rich culture. There are birds, sheep, and friendly people. There is a captivating silence, which is only broken by cascading waterfalls and ear deafening surf. Take your senses with you on this self guided road trip. Day 1: Arrival with Atlantic Airways. Pick up your rental car at the airport. Experience the island of Vágar on your own. We recommend a visit to the small village of Gásadalur. From here you can walk out on marked nature trails and enjoy the impressive view over Tindhólmur, don’t miss the beautiful waterfall that runs in to the ocean. Spend the night in Vágar. Day 2: We recommend on your way north to go on a two hour boat trip to Vestmanna birdcliffs*, where the boat takes you in between the cliffs and in to grottoes, and also visit the unique Saga Museum. Continue on to the village of Tjørnuvík, that is surrounded by steep mountains. Here you can see the impressive rock formations the Giant and the Witch. Cross the bridge, that connects the islands of Eysturoy and Streymoy, and continue to the village of Eiði. Here more beautiful surroundings and nature will await you and view of the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur, 882 meters. Spend the night in Eysturoy. *Boat trip is not included. SUNDAY: Arrival with Atlantic Airways. Pick up rental car at the airport. Take a drive to the village of Gásadalur which was the last village to be connected to the rest of the islands by tunnel. Enjoy the quiet and breathtaking view of Tindhólm. Spend the night on Vágar. MONDAY: Day on your own, but we suggest a day trip to the island of Mykines. The tour starts with a grand sail by majestic sea cliffs. Spot puffins, that charming little bird with a colorful beak, or the impressive gannet, which can only breed on the isolated isle to the west of the main island. To get out to the isle and its lighthouse, one must cross a bridge – a bridge that crosses the Atlantic Ocean. Bag lunch is had en route. Back in the village, one can pop in at the local café. Spend the night on Vágar. TUESDAY: From Tórshavn sail with the ferry Smyril to the island of Suðuroy. In the town of Tvøroyri you can visit the local tourist office and have a look at some of the historic buildings that were used by the Danish Royal Company Store. Enjoy a cup of coffee in the cosy café Pubbin, which lies close to the water. Spend the night on Suðuroy. WEDNESDAY: You will be picked up at your overnight accommodation by a driver/guide who will show you around this peculiar island, which has a rich history and unforgettable view points. The travel is determined by wind and weather. Lunch is enjoyed en route. Spend the night on Suðuroy. THURSDAY: Return to Tórshavn with the ferry Smyril. In the afternoon we suggest a visit to the village of Kirkjubøur, which is the Faroe Islands’ cultural center. Spend the night in Tórshavn. SATURDAY: From the village of Vestmanna we sail to the fantastic Vestmanna bird cliffs where we will sail between dramatic rock formations and through some sea caves. Enjoy a cup of coffee or a slice of bread at the local restaurant. Spend the night in the Northern Islands. SUNDAY: With ferry from Klaksvík to the island of Kalsoy, popularly called the Recorder, which comes because of the 12 kilometer long road that winds through four tunnels and connects the islands four villages. This tour will give you the opportunity to experience both the best of the Faroe Islands and Iceland. The Faroes (18 islands) offers an unspoilt nature, fresh air, dazzling green mountain sides, small charmingly colourful villages, dramatic vertical cliff-faces and a characteristic wildlife with countless sheep and a rich birdlife. Iceland (1 island) offers the dynamic capital of Reykjavík, the beautiful and healing Blue Lagoon plus a magical landscape of mud pools, gushing geysers, glaciers and captivating waterfalls. Thursday: Depart with Atlantic Airways to Faroe Islands. Transport to accommodation in Tórshavn. After checking in, there is time for a walk through the old town in Tórshavn to see its tiny black-tarred houses with white windows and grass roofs. The old town is unique, not only in the Faroes, but in the whole world. There are many different restaurants and cafés in Tórshavn, where you can try an excellent range of dishes – both local fish and meat. Remember to try the Faroese salmon – the best in the world! Friday: Pick up from your accommodation for a guided excursion by bus to the northern part of Eysturoy. Driving from Tórshavn along the coast, through colourful villages and crossing the bridge over the Atlantic, you will continue in the direction of Gjógv, the northernmost village on Eysturoy, known for its distinctive natural harbour and Crown Princess Mary’s bench. See the characteristic rock formations out at sea, known as ‘The Giant and The Witch’ and the 882m high mountain called Slættaratindur. Lunch is served in cosy surroundings before the excursion continues via Funningur village to the idyllic village of Saksun which lies picture perfect at the foot of a small fjord with towering mountains on both sides. Saturday: The morning is free to explore Tórshavn on your own. In the afternoon, we have arranged a sailing trip to the Vestmanna sea cliffs. Pick up from your accommodation and go by bus and guide, along the mountain road to the village of Vestmanna where the boat trip starts. Sailing out to the sea cliffs, you will pass through narrow inlets into deep grottoes, close to the 600m high vertical cliff-face.
