A Word from the Head of School Dear Greenhill Community, The 2010–2011 school year was one of continued growth and significant success for Greenhill. Initiatives identified through our current strategic plan drove much of our work throughout the year. Schedule changes in pre-k and kindergarten and third and fourth grades were made to better meet the needs of students at those levels. A significant commitment to character education, including a partner relationship with The Family Place, reinforced our commitment to our core values of honor, respect and compassion. A focus on global education was intensified with the visit of students and administrators from the WeolPyeong Middle School from Ulsan, Korea. Outstanding performances and achievements in the arts, along with two more SPC championships (boys volleyball and tennis), keep Greenhill as a leader in both of those disciplines. Finally, our Advanced Placement scores were the strongest we have ever had, with 76% of the scores being 4’s and 5’s (typically meaning college credit and/or placement) and 94% being 3 or better (passing). Most notable were our scores in science, where 77% (20/26) of the AP Biology scores were 5’s, and 79% overall were 4’s and 5’s, and in Calculus where 81% were 4’s and 5’s. These scores highlight the great strength in our science and math programs. The Class of 2011 had an incredible year with the college application process. In total, students applied to 242 different colleges in the U.S., Israel and the United Kingdom. This class applied to 45 colleges that Greenhill students had not applied to in the previous three years, demonstrating that our students approach the college search thoughtfully, individually and creatively. Our students earned significant scholarship money and spots in honors programs across the country. Seven students were accepted to highly-respected

professional arts programs. Athletically, ten members of this class will continue to play sports at Division I and Division III schools. We look forward to following the many successes of the Class of 2011 in their college careers. 2010–2011 marked another stellar admission cycle. We received 878 applications, the most on record, an increase of 4.5% over the prior year. We accepted 23% of those that applied, and our yield increased to 77%. We excitedly welcomed 156 new faces to campus in August, and they are delighting us with how they have already contributed to the School in such a short time. We also take this opportunity to reflect on the generosity of our community in the Annual Report of Gifts, which highlights the financial accomplishments of the year and acknowledges the many parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Greenhill who contributed to the School in 2010–2011. While the past several years have been a challenge for many, the good fortune of our Greenhill community has allowed us to continue to build our endowment and fund our operations. We are incredibly grateful to everyone for their tremendous support and look forward to another strong year ahead. Thank you,

Scott A. Griggs Head of School

Supporting Greenhill Baxter Brinkmann joins Peter Kraus as Co-Chair of the Development Committee Co-Chair, Peter Kraus, father of seventh-grader Jack, sophomore Nick and senior Will, welcomed fellow Trustee Baxter Brinkmann, father of fifth-grader Bridge and senior Bo, to the Development Committee this year as Co-Chair. A long-time supporter, Baxter Brinkmann has served on the Board of Trustees since 2000 and has been involved in numerous projects across the Greenhill campus, including Baxter Brinkmann, leadership support of the Great Expectations Campaign, with the Brinkmann Upper Co-Chair of the Development School Courtyard, as well as the construction of Brinkmann Field, the concession Committee building, and the tennis facilities. In addition, Baxter has provided years of generous annual support to both the Greenhill Fund and the Greenhill Gala. β€œI am excited that Baxter has agreed to help me lead this important Board committee, especially as we work to make progress implementing the School’s Strategic Plan. Baxter’s enthusiasm and support is evident across campus, and I’m sure he will continue to inspire others to support Greenhill,” remarked Peter Kraus. Peter Kraus, Co-Chair of the Development Committee

The Development Committee ensures Greenhill’s long-term financial sustainability, encouraging and directing the annual giving fundraising effort, along with managing capital campaigns. As such, the Committee plays a critical role in resourcing the School, and we are grateful for the dedication of the Trustees who have served and continue to serve on this vital committee.

Greenhill Fund Volunteers: Quiet Heroes β€œI love to volunteer for the Greenhill Fund because every donation by every parent is important to Greenhill and helps to make a great school even better,” remarked Trustee Nancy Carlson, parent of eighth-grader Owen and sophomore Lewis. Nancy has served as Chair of the Greenhill Fund for the past two years and is working again this year with Trustee Ellenore Baker, parent of sixthgrader Cate and eighth-grader Graham. Nancy Carlson, Baker has been a part of the Grade Captain Greenhill Fund Chair team for three years and is serving as ViceChair, helping to oversee more than 50 parent volunteers reaching out to all the families in the Greenhill community. Trustees Sandy Beckert, parent of junior Rebecca, and Preethi Jayaseelan, parent of fourth-grader Kirin, sixth-grader Meera and freshman Zubin, are the Upper and Middle School Team Leaders who state this volunteer opportunity truly gives a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. Kate Kettles, parent of first-grader Max and second-grader Cameron, heads up the Lower School as Team Leader. β€œI’m proud of the 93% participation achieved by our Lower School families, because we recognize the necessity of annual giving,” commented Kettles.

The loyal group of parents who volunteer as Grade Captains each year give their time and support to enhance our students’ endeavors in academics, arts and athletics. The Greenhill Fund volunteers are truly quiet heroes contributing to the success of the School’s fundraising efforts! Last year, the Greenhill Fund raised just under $1,700,000 from the 1,370 donors who are parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni and friends! Annual contributions to the Greenhill Fund provide support that is used for a myriad of operating expenses including faculty salaries, financial aid, arts and academics, to name only a few. Greenhill salutes our Grade Captains!

Giraudon’s classmate and fellow commencement speaker, ZoΓ« Marshall ’11, spoke about how quickly the time at Greenhill passed, and how students learned so much more than facts and figures. β€œEverything about our Greenhill community encouraged us to question, speak up and grow. The high rafters left room for our ideas to grow, the walls and walls of windows served as a constant reminder of how open the world was to us, how we were always a part of something greater than ourselves.” Head of School Scott Griggs ended the ceremony by delivering the annual charge that Bernard Fulton, the School’s founding headmaster, had delivered during his tenure. Griggs closed the speech with words of his own, β€œYou are prepared and you are ready. It is time for you to go forward and make your mark.”

Reflections on the Hill Ryan Kline ’11 Salutatorian 1. What are you looking forward to most at college? I am most looking forward to meeting a whole group of new people and making new friends from across the globe. I’ve been at Greenhill for 14 years. I love my class, but I’m ready for a change of scenery. 2. What will you miss about your hometown? Tex-Mex and barbeque. And Sonic Drive-In. 3. How will you change the world? I hope to change the world by working to understand other cultures, and then communicating what I learn through the medium of film. 4. What’s the best advice you’ve received and from whom? β€œDon’t change yourself to please someone else.” – My Mom 5. If your high school mascot fought your college mascot, who would win? Greenhill Hornet vs. Yale Bulldog – I’m going to have to go with the bulldog. A hornet’s sting would be a mere annoyance.

Chelsey Sveinsson ’11 Salutatorian 1. What are you looking forward to most at college? Meeting new people! Although I love the students and teachers at Greenhill, I’ve been there for over 10 years so I’m ready for something new. 2. What will you miss about your hometown? Delicious Tex-Mex food! 3. How will you change the world? I’m not sure yet, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out soon. 4. What’s the best advice you’ve received and from whom? β€œWhen it comes to dealing with parents, you don’t always have to be right.” – Tina Mendez-Kohler, my advisor 5. If your high school mascot fought your college mascot, who would win? A tree (Stanford) versus a hornet . . . too close to call.

www.greenhill.org

Brett Merriam ’11 Valedictorian 1. What are you looking forward to most at college? I am mostly looking forward to the new challenges college presents. There are just so many opportunities: new friends, new teachers and new responsibilities. I’m really looking forward to see how I can take advantage of all these upcoming opportunities. Hopefully, I can use my time at college to figure out what it is I want to do. And, of course, I’m going to love the freedom of college, too. 2. What will you miss about your hometown? I’ll miss the familiarity of Dallas. I’ve spent my entire life in North Texas, so the thought of suddenly moving to New York is a little daunting. It’s a very drastic change. Obviously, during the winter months, I’m definitely going to miss the Dallas heat. 3. How will you change the world? Honestly, I’m not entirely sure how I’m going to change the world. I haven’t entirely decided on a major or a career path yet, so my options are very wide open. I just plan to do what I love and do it well. Hopefully, I’ll be able to be a significant presence in the world in whatever capacity. 4. What’s the best advice you’ve received and from whom? While not really a single piece of advice, my parents have taught me over the years to be independent. They’ve stressed the importance of achieving based on one’s own goals, rather than the expectations of others. It is this internal drive that motivates me to do what I want to do and achieve what I want to achieve. 5. If your high school mascot fought your college mascot, who would win? Well, neither Vassar’s nor Greenhill’s mascot is particularly threatening, being the Brewers and the Hornets respectively. Between the two, I think the Hornets would win. Hornets’ stingers are definitely scarier than a guy with a mug.

Character Education Through Athletics

G

reenhill’s athletics program, an integral part of the balanced curriculum that also includes

academics and the arts, teaches students more than sports skills. It instills the fundamentals of character education – honor, respect and compassion – that the students carry with them throughout their lives. β€œIn 10 years a student won’t remember the win/loss record or individual game scores. He or she will remember how it felt to play and work together,” said Jackie Ziegler, Physical Education Department Chair and Field Hockey Coach.

β€œ You will always have to work with others to achieve a shared goal. You have different levels of relationships on a team, just like you do in a work situation. You learn to sacrifice individual glory for the good of the team.” Paige Ashley Head Girls Varsity Soccer Coach Middle School History Teacher

Athletics Curriculum

β€œMy philosophy is that fitness and wellness are for everyone,” says Earl Dorber, Head of Athletics and Physical Education. Lower School students, starting with pre-k, attend a physical education (P.E.) class every day. The classes, which are frequently integrated with classroom curriculum to facilitate crosssubject learning, emphasize cooperation, respect and skill-building. β€œWe play lots of games, like two-on-two soccer, which gives each student more opportunities to touch the ball and more repetitions, ultimately creating a positive experience [with sports],” said Ziegler.

22

The Hill | Fall 2011

In fifth and sixth grades, skill-building continues with an emphasis on improving skills, teamwork and building self-confidence. β€œSelf-confidence improves as skills improve,” states Ziegler. β€œRecently, a sixth-grader that didn’t like basketball made a three-point shot during a game. She jumped up so high because she was excited and everyone came up and gave her high-fives – even the other team members!” The P.E. classes in the early years of Middle School are preparing students for the opportunity to play for Greenhill sports teams in seventh and eighth grades, and on into Upper School. Each trimester, students may decide to try out for an array of sports, from football to swimming to track and field. But, as Dorber notes, β€œcompetition is not for everyone.” As a result, P.E. classes are offered to all students that decide not to participate in a team sport. In Upper School, P.E. classes include a wide variety of options from water aerobics to yoga.

www.greenhill.org

HONOR

β€œWhen I played baseball, I had a coach that made us cut our hair short and polish our spikes . . . He used the word β€˜class’ a lot,” Dorber reminisces. Though Greenhill certainly is not dictating hair length, it is teaching students about honor through athletics. β€œWe try to teach the students to conduct themselves as ladies and gentlemen when they are playing,” Dorber states. β€œWhen they are competing, they are representing their team, their school, their coach and their family.” Another key component of honor is leadership. Students, especially the team captains, learn that leading a group of diverse players teaches them a set of skills that they might not receive in the classroom. For senior Eric Klein, an offensive lineman for the Greenhill football team, leadership involves leading by example and by helping someone when he or she is down. For senior Hannah Orth, leadership required adapting your style to your teammates. She had to use a variety of encouragement and constructive criticism techniques to lead her fellow basketball and volleyball players. She also found she needed to remain open to feedback from other players, because she frequently learned from them as well.

RESPECT

According to Paige Ashley, head girls varsity soccer coach and Middle School history teacher, athletics teaches respect in many forms. First and foremost, sports instill a sense of respect for yourself and for your body. If a student wants to perform during a game, then he has to practice, and get the right amounts of food and sleep. Stacey Johnson, varsity track and field head coach, football coach and P.E. teacher, remembers a young woman that had potential in the long jump. During her first few years on varsity track, she worked hard to hone her technique, but she did not have much success at meets. Then, her senior year, everything came together. At SPC, she won the long jump and was a part of the championship 4 x 400 relay team.

β€œ In 10 years a student won’t remember the win/ loss record or individual game scores. He or she will remember how it felt to play and work together.” Jackie Ziegler Physical Education Department Chair

Compassion

β€œIn athletics, the amount of work you put into it is what you get out of it. Like in the classroom, if you don’t study, your test isn’t going to be as easy.” Nick Brienzi ’11

Johnson also recognizes that for many academically and artistically talented Greenhill students, their forays into athletics may represent the first time that they have struggled to achieve success. He uses stories from his experience, such as the one about the young woman and the long jump, to help students understand that repetition, perseverance and respect for the game will ultimately help them achieve their goals. Nick Brienzi, senior quarterback for the football team, learned early that perseverance in the classroom is similar to that in athletics. β€œIn athletics, the amount of work you put into it is what you get out of it,” he said. β€œLike in the classroom, if you don’t study, your test isn’t going to be as easy.” Respect for the game has lead many Greenhill teams to championship seasons. During the 2010–2011 school year, boys volleyball and boys tennis both achieved first place in the Southwestern Preparatory Conference (SPC), and the swim team came in second place. In fact, Greenhill has earned more than 25 SPC championships since 2000 – more than any other co-educational school in the conference. But the students recognize that their successes are the result of the perseverance, and their desire to help their teammates. β€œOur team dynamic – our bonds – make everyone want to win for each other. One person’s spark can ignite the whole team,” said senior Cyerra Holmes.

For Ziegler, compassion involves β€œlearning how to win and lose with grace, caring and humility.” Senior Katie Litman said that Greenhill coaches β€œdon’t focus on your opponent. They talk about our team and our focus during the game. If you can look back and tell your teammates that you gave it your all, then he’s happy. If we lose a game, we go back over the film and work through our biggest mistakes. We don’t hang our heads, because there is nothing you can do about our loss at that point. You have to move through and focus on the next game.”

At the end of every football game, win or lose, the players shake the hands of the opposing team and honor the folks that attended the game by singing either the school song (loss) or the fight song (win) to those in the bleachers. The football team has had a tough couple of years, winning only one game per season. Football player Klein said, β€œWe lose often – it’s tough. I put my heart into every game. If I don’t put my best into a game, then I get upset with myself. My dad says you learn more from losing than winning.” Klein immediately starts focusing on his next game to help keep motivation levels high. Students also learn compassion for the varying skill levels of their peers, especially in Lower School and fifth and sixth grades. Ziegler has seen highly-skilled sixth-graders share the ball with less skilled players to ensure that everyone receives a turn. Both she and Dorber constantly reiterate to their players that good sportsmanship involves playing fairly, not running up the score on a weaker team. During the off-season for volleyball and basketball, eighth-graders start practicing with the upperclassmen. β€œI know that [playing with more experienced players] can be intimidating,” said Orth. β€œI always try to take them under my wing and make them feel welcome.”

A respect for time and time management is one of the most important skills for students juggling a rigorous academic load and competitive sports. For Holmes, β€œAcademics are always first [priority], but sports are also important. I have to find the balance, but I know that managing both will only help me in the future.” Klein echoes Holmes, β€œI know that I always have an activity after school, so it helps me to be disciplined in finishing my homework.”

24

The Hill | Fall 2011

www.greenhill.org

Compassion also teaches the obvious athletic character builder – teamwork. β€œWhat you do on the court is influenced by what happens off the court,” said Litman. She feels that off-court team bonding helps her to understand how her teammates will play and provides motivation. β€œYou want to win because you want to help each other.” In football, bonds are particularly strong. β€œBeing part of a team is a great feeling, a bond for a lifetime,” said Brienzi. Klein recalls the buddy carry that the team completes at the beginning of practice. β€œIt teaches you that you need them, and they need you. It also reminds us that we can pick up each other’s spirits during a game.” β€œYes, it’s sports,” says Ashley, β€œbut, it’s real life. You will always have to work with others to achieve a shared goal. You have different levels of relationships on a team, just like you do in a work situation. You learn to sacrifice individual glory for the good of the team.”

Putting it all together

The core values – honor, respect and compassion – that influence activity on all parts of the Greenhill campus, come vividly to life in P.E. classes and on the field or court in organized sports. Working as a team, learning rules and skills, and high-energy games, either win or lose, all impart valuable lessons to Greenhill students that frequently lead to athletic successes. But at the end of the game, or the end of a season, the coaches and the students feel successful not because of the score, but because they played their hardest to support their teammates. Most importantly, students know that what they learn on the field will stay with them forever.

Coach Hollway and Performance Principles The 2011–2012 school year marks Jeff Hollway’s seventh year with the School and second year as head football coach. A fourth-generation coach, football is not only a way of life. It’s in his blood. When Hollway took over the football program, one of his primary goals was to create a holistic, positive educational experience with the students through football. β€œFootball is only a part of your life, but it impacts all of your life for the rest of your life,” he said. Hollway knows that leadership on a team starts with your experienced players. As a result, he focuses on empowering his seniors and captains to influence the rest of the team. Each Monday, Hollway meets with this group and reviews a selected Performance Principle. Each of the 18 Performance Principles, such as Loyalty or Confidence, includes a description of the principle and quotes or statements to help the students understand how the principle applies to both sports and their lives. Hollway selects the principle based on the previous week’s game and their goals for the upcoming game. The team leaders discuss what the principle means to them. Then, during the team meeting on Thursdays, seniors lead the rest of the team in a discussion of that principle. Hollway knows his principles are working. One of his football players who also played another sport recently contacted him because he and his team were having some difficulty. The student wanted to know if Hollway could recommend a Performance Principle to help them through their situation. Hollway also believes in the power of goals. In the Leaders Manual that he distributes to each senior, he includes a section on setting goals. Having goals and believing that you have the capability to achieve them, helps to turn goals into realities. He requires all of his players to set short, medium and long term goals and he tells them that if he sees them on campus, they had better know exactly what their goals are. Hollway strives to make each practice and game fun for the students. He wants them to look forward to coming to practice at 3:30 p.m. each day. But, he also understands that football, like any sport, imparts life lessons that transform girls and boys into young women and men.

TianEn (Joi) Windham ’07 University of Colorado Track and Field As the youngest of nine children, Joi Windham understands the need for teamwork and thrives on competition. At an early age, she fell in love with sports – beginning with Karate at age 10, and has continued to succeed in a variety of sports and athletic activities since then. Windham came to Greenhill in 2004 with her twin sister, Te’Qin ’07 (Toi), and joined the track and field team and cross country team. A three-year letter winner, she was a member of the 4 x 400-meter relay team that captured the SPC conference record. She recently graduated from the University of Colorado and excelled at sprints and hurdles, especially at the Big 12 Track and Field Conference Championship in 2010. She credits the hurdles for giving her the determination to succeed in every aspect of her life. β€œI learned how to have a strong mental mind and confidence in my abilities on and off the track. To be successful in the hurdles, I learned that I have to have 100% confidence and believe I can get over the hurdles. Each time I get ready to jump a hurdle, I must have absolutely no doubt in knowing I can get over the hurdle with power and speed,” she said. β€œI carry that same mentality to my schoolwork, internships and social life. I learned endless hard work, to follow my passion, and discipline.” That drive led Windham to pursue a degree in management and entrepreneurship. Her constant status on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll is just one example of her desire to succeed.

26

The Hill | Fall 2011

She credits her sport with teaching her the need for teamwork and encouragement, and also taught her about the mutual respect among athletes. β€œSince my sport is more individualistic, I have to lead by example. When my teammates see me working hard, it makes them work harder to catch up with me, and in the end, we all become faster. I learned how to encourage others with different methods because everyone competed in a different event and they all deserved support.” Since graduating in May, Windham has completed marketing internships with Third Street Chai and AT&T. She is currently a Public Affairs intern for Atmos Energy in Dallas.

Matthew Oh ’07 Dartmouth College Football Matthew Oh learned more from the game of football than any class he took. The strongest lesson he learned is the value of love and it comes from every aspect of the game. β€œIn a violent sport like football, it seems like there is no room for love, but without this quality I truly believe a team cannot succeed. I have learned the meaning of loving others and how vital love is in a team dynamic,” said Oh. β€œLove is the glue that holds a team together and the stronger the glue, the more likely the team will succeed.” Oh started at Greenhill in prekindergarten and stayed until fifth grade, when he left to attend a public middle school. In 1999, when Oh was in fourth grade, his father passed away after a tough battle with liver cancer. β€œHis last words to me were to work hard at everything I did and to play football at Harvard and become a businessman. It wasn’t until he passed that I began to love football. During the hardest time in my life, Greenhill taught me the meaning of community and love. The compassion I felt from my friends and families from Greenhill is something I will never forget.” Oh returned to Greenhill for Upper School and immediately joined several teams. During his four years, he earned four letters in football and track and field, along with one letter in lacrosse and basketball. Oh was voted football captain his senior year and played in the Texas All-Star football game where he was also elected captain of the East Texas squad. That year, he won the team Leadership Award and Helmet Award for Ethics.

He recounted the strongest memory of his time at Greenhill as the 98yard interception, which he ran back for a touchdown during Homecoming of his senior year. β€œThere was a minute left in the game and Episcopal High School (Houston) had marched within our ten. I remember praying and asking to my dad to help me make something happen right before the play. As soon as the ball touched my hands, time froze and Brinkmann Field erupted. As I crossed the end zone, I pointed up to the sky and tears rolled down my face. It was the fairytale ending to my last home game and high school football career.” This fall, Oh will start his fifth season with Dartmouth as he prepares to finish school in December. During his senior football banquet last year, he was presented with the Coach Hershey Award given to the varsity player who β€œpossesses a genuine zest for life, a strong, upbeat attitude and a sincere desire to win because of his dedication and love for the game, his team and Dartmouth College.” He would love to continue playing football at the professional level, but also plans to pursue a career in finance in Texas or California.

www.greenhill.org

Avery Rape ’10 Duke University Soccer Avery Rape is a member of the Greenhill Forever Club, but also a member of the soccer β€œforever” club. Her memories of the sport go back to kindergarten, her first year on the Hill, and she has not stopped playing since then. Though she tried a variety of other sports in middle school, soccer has remained the constant. β€œSports are part of my life every day. I play soccer a few hours a day about five times a week. I love watching ESPN’s Sports Center daily, and a majority of my closest friends at Duke are also athletes,β€œ she said. While at Greenhill, Rape became the all-time leading female soccer scorer in Greenhill School history and helped the Varsity team win the SPC Championships twice. She has played for the Sting Dallas Royal ’92 team, and recently completed her final season of club soccer for the Dallas Texas ’92 red team. The team won the Region III Championship for Youth Soccer and appeared at Nationals in Phoenix in July. And if soccer wasn’t enough to keep her busy, she was a fouryear letter-winner in track, and was on the Evergreen and Cavalcade staffs, along with community service organizations. At Duke, Rape competes with her sister, Ashley Rape ’08, who she considers the biggest influence on her career. β€œI really respect her. She always pushed me harder and inspired me to be better,” said Rape. β€œIt’s affected every aspect of my life: I’m more competitive.”

www.greenhill.org

Phillip Hiner-Leamon ’09 Trinity University Football Football is life for Phillip HinerLeamon. The Trinity sophomore spends a minimum of five hours each day living and breathing football. From watching film, lifting weights, practice and games, he has immersed himself in the sport developing his mind, body, and he said, his character. He has worked on his own style of leadership by observing those around him. Though some games may not end the way she wants, Rape works hard to improve on mistakes from lost games, while continuing to stay focused on the opponents ahead. Team leadership helps her continue to gain knowledge about the sport, and herself. β€œGood leaders ensure good team dynamics. No team is perfect, and strong leaders can hold a team together when things don’t go as planned. My teammates and I spend a lot of our time in our locker room and on the practice field working towards our goal. Everything we do works towards the chance to play for a national championship by the end of the season.”

β€œTo me, success is achieved when everyone acts as a leader and does not have to look to a leader for guidance. I have learned that leadership can come in any form. Some leaders never have to speak; on the other hand some leaders are verbally motivating.” Hiner-Leamon, a member of the Forever Club at Greenhill, started in Level 2 (pre-kindergarten) and graduated four years after his brother, Shawn Hiner-Leamon ’05. He lettered in basketball, track and field, and football. β€œI select sports that require teamwork and that involve quickness, speed and physical contact. For example, I love basketball. It is a very physical game yet it is very simple and can be enjoyed by myself or with any number of people.” He served as football captain his senior year and recalls his fondest memory as the night that Greenhill beat Episcopal School of Dallas with a final score of 42–0 during that year. Working so closely with a team at Trinity, Hiner-Leamon found himself building a new group of friends who support and encourage each other throughout the season. Even when the team suffers a loss, the morale of his teammates pushes him through to the next game.

Playing sports is a constant in his life, and he appreciates the various lessons he’s learned from each sport – especially football. β€œLosing a game is miserable, not really at the moment of the loss but the meeting and practices following the loss are a test of mental toughness. However, come Tuesday – the first practice of the game week – is the time to prepare for the next challenge and put the last one behind us. We feed off of each other’s energy.” This summer, Hiner-Leamon was part of the United States Olympic Committee program known as F.L.A.M.E. (Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere). He spent a week engaged in a series of leadership seminars, financial literacy workshops, field trips, sports demonstrations and motivational presentations conducted by athletes and USOC staff members. β€œI think the program further developed me as a leader, a studentathlete and a business professional,” he said. Hiner-Leamon is pursuing a degree in sports management and business administration, and worked as a business development intern for the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host committee.

Dear Fellow Hornets, We had a great start to the summer as we welcomed the Class of 2011 into the Greenhill Alumni Association. Alumni had the pleasure to meet and talk with the seniors gathered at the home of Pierce Marshall ’86 the week prior to commencement. They are an incredibly talented group and we look forward to following their accomplishments as they enter college. The alumni association had a busy summer. We successfully met the alumni matching gift challenge earning an additional $25,000 for the Greenhill Fund. Thank you to all alumni who gave to make this possible! We also had several events including monthly networking luncheons in May, June and July featuring fascinating topics such as digital forensics by Gavin Manes ’96; former Secret Service agent and head of Hunt Consolidated, Inc. security, Mike Pritchard; a tour of the new Parkland Memorial Hospital mock rooms; and Jim Oberwetter, former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and President of the Dallas Regional Chamber. Young alumni also enjoyed an afternoon at the ballpark to cheer on the Texas Rangers. It is wonderful to see how Greenhill athletes highlighted the core principles of honor, respect and compassion as lessons they learned through participation in Greenhill sports. These principles continue to help guide them in both their personal and professional roles. The dedication and hard work learned from sports provided a foundation to overcome challenges and accomplish goals throughout their lives. Looking ahead, we have multiple events coming up this fall. Don’t forget to save the date and join us for Homecoming weekend, October 27–29, as we celebrate the classes of 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996 and 2001! We will also be going on the road to host a reunion in New York in October. Monthly networking luncheons will continue, and holiday events and the annual alumni soccer game are planned, so stay tuned for more details. For more information, please contact Katie Young at youngka@greenhill.org or visit the Greenhill alumni website at www. greenhill.org/alumni. With Hornet Pride,

June Lunch

In May, a group of alumni and guests engaged in a dialogue with Jim Oberwetter, the former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and parent of Greenhill alumni Ellen Oberwetter ’93, Rea Oberwetter Mackay ’95 and Brooke Oberwetter ’98. Jim became president and chief executive officer of the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce in February 2009. David Johnson ’67 moderated the program at the Park City Club. David recorded a segment for his show on News Radio Station 1080 AM in Dallas.

Our June Networking Luncheon featured Mike Pritchard, Vice President of Global Security for Hunt Consolidated, Inc., where he manages protection of Hunt personnel and assets around the world. Pritchard joined Hunt after retiring from the U.S. Secret Service. During his 26-year career with the Secret Service, he served in numerous field offices and with The June Networking Luncheon featured the Special Operations Counter Mike Pritchard, Vice President of Global Terrorism (CAT) Team at the Security for Hunt Consolidated, Inc. White House. He protected six U.S. presidents and served as the detail leader of numerous visiting foreign heads of state. He shared some very interesting stories about his time working for the Secret Service – giving us as much detail as he could without giving away any secrets!

Jim spoke about the challenges he faced during his time as ambassador, both on a professional level and a personal level, and answered questions about the search for Osama Bin Laden and the relationship between the U.S. and Middle Eastern countries. In his role with the Dallas Regional Chamber, Jim discussed the need to embrace the greater Dallas community and to build relationships with business owners and non-profits. During another luncheon, alumni got the exclusive chance to tour the new Parkland Hospital mock rooms including labor and delivery, neo-natal intensive care unit, trauma and an operating room. Walter Jones, Senior Vice President of Facilities, shared details about the planning and execution of the new state-of-the-art facility, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2014. During a spring luncheon event, alumni toured mock rooms for the new Parkland Hospital scheduled to open in 2014.

Family Fun The First Annual Family Fun Day was a huge success with more than 30 families attending and taking over the Phillips Family Athletic Center. Kids enjoyed a bounce house, face painting and our indoor rock-climbing wall, and joined parents to play tennis, swim in the indoor pool and play in the open gym. Our catering staff provided a delicious lunch and an amazing ice cream sundae bar complete with hot fudge, whipped cream, cherries and even some gummy worms. Greenhill Upper School students helped facilitate some of the events and created some incredible face painting masterpieces. It was wonderful to see our alumni and their families – especially some new additions to the Greenhill community. Thank you to our event co-chairs Barbi Kreisler Cohen ’91 and Julie Ray Fields ’83 and their committee members. We look forward to our second Family Fun Day next year!

Baseball On June 26, the Alumni Board hosted fellow alumni in a luxury suite at the Rangers Ballpark. The Rangers lost to the Mets, but our alumni had fun connecting with each other and watching America’s pastime. The suite featured great outdoor and indoor seating (for those needing a break from the heat) and a huge spread of baseball treats and eats. Alumni brought parents, children, spouses and friends to watch the game. We were surprised with a visit from Texas Ranger Hall of Fame member Jim Sundberg, former Rangers catcher and six-time American League Gold Glove catcher. Jim is currently the Senior Executive Vice President for the Texas Rangers. Many thanks to the Alumni Board, the Texas Rangers and Grady Raskin ’92 for a wonderful event.

This year we met in Shell, Wyoming, because one year a couple of our gals rode through Shell on their way home and stopped for gas. The locals were very curious about all the pink leather and pink pool noodles on the headlights and wanted to know more. One thing led to another and they ended up staying the night, free of charge, and letting the locals put on a fundraiser for the cause. The next year with more planning the town raised $4,000 in one night even though our primary fundraiser was in Cheyenne. Ride for Racks, hunting territory. Get it? All donations go directly to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. They let me set up a page on their website so that funds are not held by a third party but immediately accessible to them for research. https://support. bcrfcure.org/civicrm/contribute/pcp/ info?reset=1&id=160 is the website.”

Jennifer Lowery Andress is among the eight cancer survivors to appear on one of eight different covers of Runner’s World magazine for a July special section, β€œOutrunning Cancer.” An avid runner for most of her life, she submitted her story when she saw a call for cancer survivors on the magazine’s Facebook page. She is part of a running group from near Birmingham, AL, the Gnomes, and completed two marathons in 2010 – the Mercedes Marathon in 3 hours, 43 minutes, and the Boston Marathon in 3 hours, 46 minutes.

In Memoriam A Tribute to Jeff Guyer ’99 Submitted by Braden Howell ’99

Jeff Guyer ’99 and his wife, Autumn, at their Rehearsal Dinner in October 2009

Jeff Guyer began at Greenhill when he was in ninth grade and graduated in 1999. He was actively involved in The Evergreen student newspaper and the cross country team. Classmates voted him β€œMost Likely to Succeed,” and he did! Jeff graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was an award-winning orthopedic engineer, specializing in the design of spinal implants.

While battling cancer might cause most people to retreat from the spotlight, Jeff went an entirely different route. Over the course of the next year, Jeff publicly documented his battle with sarcoma in vivid detail and with brutal honesty. The community grew with members from coast to coast and border to border. It became the β€œLiving With the Big C” community, and its members had one thing in common: they all loved Jeff.

Every year, students at Greenhill are reminded that they are not just part of a school, but members of a community. Greenhill is an institution that takes great pride in the notion of being much more than a school and works hard to foster the idea of community.

As news of Jeff’s diagnosis began to spread, followers flocked to his blog to read updates. However, what they found when they read his blog entries was not the story of a young man bemoaning his battle with a deadly disease, but instead someone doing everything he could to live life to the fullest.

Beginning in June 2010, a new community started to form. Its founder was a 1999 Greenhill School alumnus who created a blog to keep his friends and loved ones informed about health issues he was facing. Upon first glance, the title of the blog: β€œLiving With the Big C,” and the web address at which it could be accessed, http:// jeffsfightwithcancer.blogspot.com, made it obvious these were no routine health issues. Jeff Guyer, just 29 years old at the time, was diagnosed with cancer on June 15, 2010.

The Hill | Fall 2011

β€œI was shocked and angry when I found out Jeff had cancer, and my heart went out to his family,” said Israel Nosnik ’99. β€œHowever, I was truly inspired by Jeff’s blog entries. His approach to cancer and his overall candor was like nothing I have ever seen. He smiled his way through the biggest battle of his life.”

www.greenhill.org

Jeff’s family reunion in Houston on December 25, 2010

Because of the time Jeff dedicated to postings on his blog, it became hard for anyone in the β€œLiving With the Big C” community to be in the dark about Jeff’s illness. Just as the story of his fight with cancer continued to spread, his community of supporters continued to grow. Friends and classmates who had not spoken in years were being reconnected, all because they wanted to support Jeff. The phrase, β€œBreathe In Hope, Breathe Out Love,” a sort of motto from Jeff, began appearing all over the social networking site Facebook as his friends and loved ones wanted to show they were thinking about him constantly. And, like any good community, members were not content to simply support Jeff through words of encouragement, but instead put the force of their unifying interest into action to help raise money for sarcoma research in honor of Jeff. A major fundraising effort began from an idea that Zac Bleicher ’99 and Jeff discussed on New Year’s Eve 2010. Together, they strategized ways to help raise money for research, including having bike rides, raising money online through sponsorships and throwing parties. Jeff gathered with his family, Greenhill and Boston friends in the Boston Commons on June 5, 2011.

β€œWe were hoping to raise $50,000, which was twice what Jeff had raised the summer before,” Bleicher said. β€œBut we really didn’t know where it was going to go. The outpouring of support was so strong that within six weeks of starting in March, we had to raise the goal.”

Bleicher said that because of the overwhelming support, the very nature of the idea evolved into something more permanent that they could carry into the future. β€œI think Jeff was immensely grateful for all the fundraising,” he said. β€œI think it gave him a reason to be positive, and not just because of the monetary support, but because he felt like he was still making a huge impact.” Sadly, the fundraising has stretched beyond Jeff’s lifespan. On Saturday, June 4, 2011, Jeff made his last post to his blog. In it, he thanked everyone for the support they had shown him and his family, and asked them to keep fighting to find a cure, continue the fundraising, and continue to β€œBreathe In Hope, Breathe Out Love.” At 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2011, the β€œLiving With the Big C” community lost its founder. But as Jeff said himself in his last blog posting, β€œIt’s not a goodbye, but more of a see you later.” Although Jeff’s fight with cancer ended less than a year after it began, he provided a lifetime of inspiration and wisdom for his friends and supporters during that time. Through his blog, Jeff shared his thoughts, his feelings and his personal life with the world in a way few people have ever done. With his constant optimism, along with the dedicated documenting of his battle with cancer, Bleicher said Jeff showed him how the power of positive thinking can impact your life. β€œIt’s not that thinking positively will cure your cancer, but being positive, and seeing the brightness in everything, everyday, that helps you through life, especially when it’s been unfair. That, and the strength of human connections,” Bleicher said. The overflowing, standing room only crowd at Jeff’s memorial service in Dallas was a testament to the number of connections Jeff made with people all over the country, while the more than $150,000 raised for sarcoma research in his honor is reflective of the level at which Jeff connected with others. β€œIt’s clichΓ© to say it, but we, people, are really all we have in life,” Bleicher said. β€œAll the material things don’t matter if you don’t have love from friends and family surrounding you, and Jeff had that in overflowing amounts.”

In Memoriam While a fifth-grader at Greenhill, Ally wrote the following poem. I Have Wings Now! Where did you go? What did you see? I went higher than the clouds. I saw more than the earth. You saw nothing beyond the earth. Where did you go? What did you see? I went to the place my feet cannot take me. I saw everyone I have ever missed. You saw nothing you don’t know. Where did you go? What did you see? I went to a place no human can go. I saw what I needed; I saw my new home. This is your home. Here’s where you’ll stay. Where did you go? What did you see? I went to buy a halo. I saw my hometown. You own no halo. You were born in this town.

Alessandra β€œAlly” Alexandrou Alessandra β€œAlly” Alexandrou, born February 23, 1994, passed away tragically in a car accident along with her boyfriend, Dan Carey, a recent graduate of Bishop Lynch, on August 3, 2011. Ally attended Greenhill School from Level I through eighth grade and attended Bishop Lynch her freshman and sophomore years. Ally’s sister, Christina, is a freshman at Greenhill, and her parents, Teresa and Drew, are active members of the Greenhill community. Ally will be remembered for her vivacious spirit, boundless energy and passion for life. She was an outstanding writer and effective speaker who often used her voice to champion the cause of the underrepresented. The Greenhill community extends our heartfelt condolences to the entire Alexandrou family.

Where did you go? What did you see? I went up to heaven, where I will stay. I saw all the family that had gone away.

Dear Friends, This edition of The Hill celebrates the achievements of the 2010–2011 school year. While the previous pages feature the depth of activity and accomplishments of our incredible students and alumni, the pages that follow highlight the commitment of our Trustees, current and former parents, grandparents, alumni and friends who continue to provide important financial support to the School. I want to extend a sincere thank you to all who participated in the many areas across campus: Greenhill Fund, Endowment, the Library, our Parents’ Association fundraising efforts, and other special operating support initiatives. The resources provided this year are impressive to say the least. Your involvement and dedication make a difference! Overseeing much of this effort in 2010–2011 was Trustee and Development Chair, Peter Kraus, and Parents’ Association President, Margot McGuire. Their consistent and charismatic leadership inspired all of us to reach and surpass even the most challenging goals. I hope you join me in thanking them and taking pride in all we have accomplished together. As we gear up for the coming year, we welcome Baxter Brinkmann as the new Co-Chair of the Development Committee with Peter Kraus, and Camille Owens as the new Parents’ Association President. I am confident they will build on our recent success and play a significant role in helping Greenhill to strive for excellence on all levels. Greenhill School continues to thrive, and it is the result of tremendous generosity and hard work by many. Thank you for your efforts and I look forward to seeing you soon in the coming year. Sincerely,

Alumni Challenge At the beginning of the 2010–2011 school year, an anonymous Board of Trustees member issued a challenge to Greenhill alumni. The challenge was for alumni to give at least $25,000 in new or increased gifts before June 30, 2011. If alumni accomplished this then the trustee would match the amount. The Greenhill Alumni not only met, but exceeded the challenge. In successfully securing an additional $50,000 dollars for the Greenhill Fund, more students will be able to attend Greenhill and faculty will benefit from increased funding of teaching resources and professional development.

Left to Right: Senior Eli Steinfield and Andrew Mercurio, Upper School English Teacher

Scholarship Winner Gives Back to Greenhill The Seay Foundation for Community Betterment awarded one of its scholarships recognizing exemplary classroom citizenship to senior Eli Steinfield. The scholarship pays for all tuition for the 2011–2012 school year. Eli and his parents, Arlene and David, were so grateful for the scholarship nomination and the award, that they decided to make a gift to Greenhill for half of the tuition amount. β€œWe know that Eli could only have come this far with the steadfast support, understanding, humor and infinite patience that [David Braemer, Head of Upper School, and Andrew Mercurio, Upper School English] and so many of the Upper School teaching staff demonstrated along the way,” said Arlene. The gift was made in honor of Andrew Mercurio to the General Endowment for Faculty Salaries to recognize β€œhis unwavering commitment to his students and his extraordinary ability to instill in his students the very values recognized by the Seay Foundation.” The Fund was established to support faculty recruitment and retention efforts, with the goal of being able to provide competitive salaries and benefits to the faculty members that impact the lives of Greenhill students daily. If you would like to contribute to the General Endowment for Faculty Salaries fund, or any other Greenhill endowment fund, please contact Julie Diaz, 972.628.5501 for more information.

Why I Give By Becky Daniels For 27 years, Upper School History teacher Becky Becker Daniels has served in roles all over Greenhill, including Director of Technology, History Department Chair, and for two decades, sixth grade history teacher. Her children, Doug ’09 and Sarah ’11, are both Greenhill alumni. She’s seen the impact of a Greenhill education as an educator and a parent and feels lucky to have the opportunity to keep it moving forward. β€œGreenhill is truly unique. Its commitment to diversity and respect of different perspectives make a powerful statement in the world. My belief in these principles keeps me passionate about Greenhill. You cannot expect this unique School to continue unless everyone steps up to offer support, and this must include a financial commitment. It is naive to think that someone else is going to do it. Giving back is a key to our success.”
