A Message from the Head of School Dear Parents, I’m excited to embark on my third year as Head of School at Greenhill. Ever since my first moment on campus, I have been struck by the qualities that make Greenhill such a special place: students who love learning, faculty who love teaching, and parents who believe in our mission and values. New parents, we welcome you! At Greenhill, we know that parents are essential partners in the educational process. We encourage you to take an active role with your child both at home and on campus. As parents of three Greenhill Hornets, Marianne and I join you on this wonderful journey. This guide will provide you with many details about the Greenhill experience that will ease your transition into the School, including more information on volunteer opportunities, annual events, methods of communication, the layout of our campus, and more. Please review this booklet and visit our website (www.greenhill.org) to learn about other aspects of our community. Whether you volunteer at lunch, sponsor a table at our annual gala, or help raise participation in the Greenhill Fund, your engagement will make a tremendous difference to your family and to our amazing school. Thank you for selecting Greenhill School for your child. I look forward to working with you for years to come. Lee J. Hark Head of School

GREENHILL GALA (SPRING) The Greenhill Gala is not just one event, but an entire season. The Gala is a series of events, starting with the kickoff party in the fall, gearing up to the main event and auction in early spring, and culminating with various Gala Parties (explained below). Previous auctions have featured toptier enterntainment such as Don Henley, Jay Leno, Foreigner, Gavin Degraw, and Earth, Wind & Fire. It is a wonderful evening for parents to enjoy a dinner, entertainment, and bid on great auction items. It is preceded the week before by an online auction. Previous galas have benefitted financial aid and faculty endowment funds. GREENHILL GALA PARTIES (ALL YEAR) Gala Parties are themed parties sprinkled throughout the year that are open to the entire community to help support Gala fundraising initiatives. Often hosted by families or groups of families in someone’s home, they have included bingo and casino nights, mardi gras, snow days, Boliwood, Grand Slam, and more! Grab your friends and plan to attend Gala Parties to support Greenhill! GREENHILL GOES GLOBAL (SPRING) This annual festival celebrates the different cultures and ethnicities that make Greenhill a diverse community. Greenhill Goes Global takes place on a Friday afternoon in the spring in the gymnasium and features booths representing the diverse customs of our Greenhill families. It also highlights student performers and artists. This is a great opportunity to volunteer and showcase your heritage.

8

FRIDAY ON THE HILL (FALL) On a designated Friday in the fall, we hold a carnival after school for Preschool, Lower, and Middle School with many fun activites, booths, and food for kids of all ages. It is free of charge for Greenhill students and their families. HALLOWEEN (FALL) Halloween is a festive time at Greenhill. The highlight is an afternoon parade led by the Head of School and the Upper School Band. Seniors follow Preschool and Lower School students, filling the whole campus with costumes and fun. The parade culminates with a sing-along in the Meadow. HOMECOMING (FALL) The entire school participates in Homecoming, a fall tradition. Homecoming week includes daily dress-up days for Middle School and Upper School, such as “Pajama Day” and “Green & Gold Day,” and culminates with an all-school pep rally Friday afternoon. On Homecoming day, all fall varsity teams participate in a contest culminating with the football game in the evening. Families are invited to campus to enjoy pre-game activities before kick-off. A special Greenhill tradition takes place during halftime, when all Seniors are escorted on the field by their parents. HORNET NIGHT (WINTER) Once a year, parent volunteers run Hornet Night for Upper School students. This social evening event is free to students. PARENT FORUM (ALL YEAR) The division of the Parents’ Association that coordinates speakers and activities for parents is known as Parent Forum. Attending a Parent Forum event is a great way to stay connected and to learn about interesting topics. THE NUTCRACKER (WINTER) Greenhill Kindergarteners have been performing the Nutcracker since 1951. Every December they transform into the characters and dance to Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic. Our Head of School is the narrator, and Greenhill’s Upper School Orchestra provides the music. The Preschool music teacher directs and choreographs the performance.

9

Greenhill Fund Throughout its history, Greenhill School has relied on the generosity of the community in the pursuit of excellence. Our parent community has shown tremendous support of the Greenhill Fund with participation at nearly 100% last year! Examples of sacrifice and support began in our very first year when founding Head of School Bernard Fulton and other faculty members went without a salary to ensure a successful launch of the school. Today, all families are given the opportunity to show their support of the school through the Greenhill Fund. Annual contributions to the Greenhill Fund provide support that is used for critical operating expenses including faculty salaries, financial aid, arts, academics, and athletic programs. These funds provide essential elements for our exemplary program. Without the Greenhill Fund, our program would not be as full and dynamic. All gifts are 100% tax deductible. To show your support and make a gift to the School, please contact Robert Clements, Director of Annual Giving, at (972) 628-5681.

WAYS TO GIVE WE WELCOME YOU TO EXPLORE THE MANY WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT GREENHILL!

Greenhill Fund

Greenhill Gala

Gifts to the Greenhill Fund provide support for academic programs, financial aid, faculty salaries, and other operational initiatives that tuition alone does not cover.

Gala season is the largest fundraising event each year, including dinner, entertainment, live and silent auctions, and many affiliated parties.

The Greenhill Fund is an annual campaign, running each year from July 1 – June 30.

The main event is usually held in the spring, but the kick-off party, ticket sales and table sponsorships start early in the school year.

DESIGNATION AREAS

Greenhill Fund gifts are unrestricted and the School uses them throughout the year to fund operating priorities.

The Gala supports a designated fund, which varies from year to year. Previous Galas have supported the Endowment for Financial Aid, Faculty Endowment, and the Building Community Campaign.

SOLICITATION

Greenhill solicits contributions for Greenhill Fund with a robust volunteer team via letters, emails, and phone calls.

Greenhill solicits participation in the Gala via emails, MyGreenhill Weekly, and personal contact.

IMPACT

With the goal of 100% parent participation, gifts to this fund make an immediate impact on current students by providing resources to support our exceptional academic program.

The Gala provides additional resources for Greenhill, while offering an opportunity for community-building within the Greenhill Community.

PURPOSE

TIMING

FOR MORE INFORMATION, please contact Chief Advancement Officer Susan Holmes 972.628.5501 or holmess@greenhill.org.

Endowment

Capital Campaigns

Volunteer

Gifts to the endowment are held and invested by Greenhill. A portion of the investment income from the endowment is drawn annually to support School operations.

Capital campaigns raise funds for significant campus enhancements, such as new buildings. Tuition, Greenhill Fund, and Endowment Funds only support annual operating expenses.

Parents are vital members of our community, and the gift of time is invaluable to Greenhill. Volunteers frequently assist with opportunities in their child’s class or grade level.

Endowment gifts are accepted year round.

Capital campaigns are typically held for a specific period of time spanning several years. Greenhill’s most recent campaign, the Building Community Campaign, lasted from 2010 to 2016. Great Expectations, from 2002-2007.

Volunteers are needed throughout the school year, all the time!

Categorized in five areas: Faculty Enrichment, Financial Aid, Curriculum & Program, Facilities, and General Endowment. Donors may designate an area within one of those five categories.

The purpose of each capital campaign is clearly identified before the campaign starts. *

Parents/family members may volunteer in the classroom, library, dining hall, on committees, or by helping with events. See pages 5-9 for a full list of volunteer opportunities.

To learn more about endowment giving opportunities, please contact Susan Holmes, Chief Advancement Officer, 972.628.5501.

Capital campaign solicitations will occur via meetings, events, letters, email, and other dedicated campaign communications.

You will hear about opportunities via the P.A. and My Greenhill Weekly, room parents (Preschool and Lower School), and gradelevel volunteers (Middle and Upper School.)

Earnings play a critical role in shaping the future of the School by supporting the faculty, students, programs, and facilities that enhance the Greenhill experience.

Capital campaigns transform the day-to-day experience for generations of Greenhill students by improving campus facilities and serving strategic objectives.

Volunteers bring our campus to life and enrich the Greenhill experience for all of our students.

See p. 5-9 for more info. * The most recent campaign, the Building Community Campaign, supported the building of the Marshall

Family Performing Arts Center, the renovation of Crossman Hall, the relocation of the athletic fields now on Midway Road, and the creation of additional parking.

Campus Locations Greenhill’s 75-acre campus offers the perfect setting for a safe and vibrant learning experience. The classrooms are small, reinforcing our belief in an interactive and intimate academic environment. All classrooms are filled with natural lighting, and multiple windows provide a glimpse of learning to all who may walk by. In addition, all teacher workspaces are open and accessible and support our goal of providing an inviting environment for teacher-student interaction. The Greenhill campus features separate academic buildings for Upper, Middle, Lower School, and Preschool students, which are within close proximity to one another to provide opportunities for cross-division interaction. The Fine Arts Building, Phillips Family Athletic Center, and Marshall Family Performing Arts Center provide space for students to showcase their athletic and artistic talents.

School Activities This section provides parents with a glimpse into the daily life of a Greenhill student. The information in this section will help guide parents through yearlong activities that students will participate in as well as terms that are heard throughout the Greenhill community. ADVISORY (5 - 12) Advisors serve as a constant mentor to help guide students throughout their years in Middle and Upper School. In Middle School, students meet with the same group of students and a teacher who serves as their advisor for the school year. In Upper School, students meet with the same group of students and an advisor for all four years. CONFERENCES Parents can expect to hear about their child’s progress regularly from teachers. Parent-student-teacher conferences are designed to review a student’s progress and to help the student set goals. They are crucial to the child’s success at Greenhill. Dates vary by division. See school calendars for conference dates. There is no school on conference days, but childcare is offered during your designated time. 24

EXTENDED DAY (PK - 8) Greenhill families who desire childcare before or after the regular school day may use Extended Day. Families interested in late pick up must submit an application over the summer. Enrollment is limited, so early registration is encouraged. There are additional charges for participating in Extended Day after school. Extended Day is also available in the Lower School free of charge for earlymorning care on an as-needed basis and does not require an application. It is available from 7:15 am-7:45 am. EXTEND & EXPLORE (PK - 8) All Greenhill families will receive email notices of after-school activities coordinated by the Extended Day office, such as art, tennis, and chess. For an extra charge, you may register your child to attend these activities even if your child does not regularly attend Extended Day. ISAS The Independent Schools Association of the Southwest is a non-profit voluntary membership association of independent schools. The Association was founded in 1955 and includes schools located in Arizona, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Mexico. ISAS is the accrediting agency for Greenhill School. ISAS ARTS FESTIVAL The ISAS Arts Festival is officially sanctioned and supported by the Association to help promote and develop Upper School (Grades 9 through 12) arts activities and curricula of its member schools. Participation in the Festival is intended to foster high standards and stimulate creativity in the performing and fine arts programs of the schools and in the individual endeavors of students and teachers. The Festival has been instrumental in the development of strong arts programs in participating ISAS schools and richly inspirational to their students. LEGACY GROUPS (HEART OF THE HILL) Legacy Groups are small groups of students from different grades that meet regularly for “Heart of the Hill” gatherings on campus. Typically, a Legacy Group includes students from Preschool, Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School, as well as faculty and staff. Legacy Groups remain the same year after year, with graduates “replaced” by new Preschool students. Legacy Groups help students of all ages get to know one another.

25

MINI SCHOOL Held early in the school year, Mini Schools are evenings designed to introduce parents to teachers and give the faculty an opportunity to outline curriculum, goals, and expectations. Parents have the opportunity to hear about their child’s schedule and see a typical day. For parents only. REENROLLMENT CONTRACTS Reenrollment contracts are posted online for Greenhill families in early February. The contract outlines financial and tuition obligations for the upcoming school year. Contracts must be executed by a parent/guardian, and a non-refundable deposit is due in mid-February. There is also information about the lunch program and school insurance. RESERVED PARKING SPACES Green and white signs designating reserved parking spots are scattered throughout campus parking lots. These reserved parking spaces are for service to Greenhill, have been sold to the highest bidders during the annual gala auction, or are designated for faculty and administration. SAGE DINING SERVICES (LUNCH) All Greenhill students are automatically enrolled in the SAGE Dining Plan. The premier partner in dining experience, SAGE uses whole foods as well as the freshest products to create nutritious meals for our students. The goal of lunch period at Greenhill is to provide all students a well-balanced and satisfying meal that supports growth and development.
