That’s part of the reason why Green Industry Pros is proud to present our annual Editor’s Choice Awards—a roundup of the products that have been the most influential in helping green industry professionals become more efficient and effective.
It always impresses me how manufacturers continue to rise to the challenge of helping green industry pros streamline their operations, with many improvements coming from feedback from landscapers and end users. Even if a product is good, many manufacturers have yet to slow down, working year after year to ensure that their products become great and even exceptional.
We received so many submissions this year that it was difficult to narrow it down. You can find the complete list of winners on p. 6.

Hunter Industries will combine WR-Clik (rain sensor only) and the WRF-Clik (rain and freeze sensor) into one wireless sensor with freeze shutdown capabilities. Hunter said this update is for its wireless RainCliks only. Hunter said it did not update wired Rain-Clik models with a wired rain/freeze sensor. What to Know About SUCCESSION PLANNING
Columnist Dick Detmer explains what green industry company owners should think about when it comes to passing on their business to the next generation.
After years or often decades at the helm of a successful landscape business, there eventually comes the question: Who will take over when you’re ready to step back? Many choose to pass their business along to the next generation, and others look to sell it, but in either case, success can only be achieved through careful succession planning.
Succession planning can be loosely defined as the process used to transition the management and ownership of the business to the next generation. Some business owners discover that their best option is to prepare the business to eventually be sold to an outside entity and to transition themselves for life away from the business.
Either way, you’ve invested countless hours building your company to where it is today, so it’s wise to protect that investment by doing all you can to smooth the transition to a new leader (and maximize its value) when the time comes.
Preparing the next generation is extremely important, of course. Conduct a careful analysis of the requirements of the top position and the current capabilities of the candidate. Some candidates may not understand the full scope of the opportunities and the commitment needed to operate and grow the business effectively. Most candidates lack critical delegation and other vital skills at this point, but I have found that on-site training is very helpful. The candidate needs the structured, specific-to-their-company education that empowers them to plan, organize, direct and control in a more effective way when they have the reins (rather than simply being along for the ride). They need to become good leaders, proficient in the areas of hiring, motivation, training, supervision and good decisionmakers for equipment purchases, etc. There is so much for them to learn no matter how much they already know.
Here are a few additional thoughts on this topic:
• Every succession situation is unique, and relationships can be radically different. Set your expectation that this process will have many moving parts and will take some time, so it is wise to get the ball rolling many months or even years in advance. Put structure into the work relationship and prepare the person for success. Include a formalized plan.
• Well-defined areas of responsibility and duties are key.
• Enlist the help of an experienced business consultant to aid in defining the roles, parameters, responsibilities and education.
• Be cautious about having a succession plan that may lead to role ambiguities when multiple family members are involved. Only one person should be in charge. Having multiple family members involved without the proper structure in the company typically isn’t wise. Some personalities clash, and some family members (or their spouses) can become envious of the person at the top.
• When the time is right, prepare the other staff members properly so that they aren’t threatened by changes.
For those who do not want to go the succession route but are just beginning to think about selling their business at some point, it is wise to go through many of the same steps as those who are considering succession. Now is the best time to get started by analyzing your staff, marketing, facility, inventory, procedures, etc. An efficient, growing and profitable landscape business with a young fleet of equipment and a very honed team will command a much higher price when you are ready to sell.

Midseason Sprayer MAINTENANCE MUSTS
To properly maintain their sprayers midseason, lawn care operators should consider implementing the following recommendations.
Lawn care operators (LCOs) must perform midseason maintenance on their sprayers’ various components to ensure their efficiency and safety remain high.
Check the components
Christian Jessel, category manager, equipment, SiteOne Landscape Supply, advises LCOs to inspect each battery for any signs of damage or wear and clean terminals to guarantee that connections remain highly reliable.
In addition, operators must thoroughly clean their sprayers every time they utilize them, focusing on removing debris and residue that may clog nozzles or negatively impact their sprayers’ performances. While doing so, Jessel recommends removing batteries and maintaining their connections’ dryness.
At the same time, operators should also lubricate their sprayers’ pumps. They can inspect their sprayers’ pump seals and O-rings for any damage or wear and then replace them whenever necessary.
“For seals, a thin coating of petroleum jelly, like Vaseline, is recommended,” Jessel adds.
Meanwhile, operators must check their sprayers’ filters for buildups and clogs and clean or replace their filters.
Furthermore, they will need to periodically check their sprayers’ calibration to ensure application rates are accurate. To do so, they should measure the output volume of each of
their sprayers with clean water over a given area and then compare each with the rate and spread area that they desire.
“And, finally, operators must inspect their sprayers’ backpack straps and harnesses for any signs of damage, discomfort or wear,” Jessel says.
Prevent clogging, observe signs of wear
Robert Perkins, parts manager, Graham Spray Equipment, believes LCOs should also check their sprayers’ engine oil during their midseason maintenance. If oil levels are low, they must increase them. If oil is dark or has debris in it, they should conduct an oil change.
Additionally, they should clean their sprayers’ screens every day to prevent clogging, which typically interferes with flow rates, and they must wash their spray rigs once a week, at minimum, throughout the entire season.
“Residue from spray chemicals causes corrosion,” Perkins explains. “Weekly washes increase spray rigs’

Operators should also bucket test their pumps. To do so, they can release three gallons of liquid from their sprayers’ tanks into a bucket, while recording how long it takes to completely empty them.
Operators should also observe their belts, while checking the tension on idlers and looking for cracks, dry rot and other signs of wear.
“If a belt needs to be tightened, be sure to leave a half-inch of spring in it,” Perkins adds.
Although Zack Smith, operations and marketing manager, Gregson-Clark Spraying Equipment, thinks sprayer maintenance doesn’t involve major overhauls midseason, he advises operators to focus on critical components.
“I would suggest going through the sprayer, cleaning filters and checking O-rings, specifically on the suction side of the pump, as those often cause air leaks, which prevent sprayers from building pressure,” Smith says.
Maintain hoses, nozzles, reels and tanks
To enhance their sprayers’ efficiency, Jessel, Perkins and Smith recommend lawn care operators to especially focus on their hoses, nozzles, reels and tanks.
Hoses and reels. According to Smith, since hoses will wear out over time, operators should periodically check for signs of wear, including cracks, dry rot and leaks.
“An easy way to extend a spray hose’s life is to flip it end for end,” he says. “This will put the hose that is always dragging on the ground farther back on the reel.”
Perkins adds that an entire hose should be unrolled off a reel and then rewound back on it to verify that the reel is working properly.
Jessel agrees with Smith and Perkins, adding that hoses should be cleaned regularly to remove any debris and dirt.
“Also, replace damaged hoses promptly to prevent water loss and ensure proper irrigation,” Jessel says.
Smith notes that hose reels don’t require such maintenance. “However, it’s good practice to have a spare push button and solenoid on hand," Smith notes.
Nozzles. Much like hoses, nozzles should be inspected for blockages and clogs, too. Jessel suggests operators use a small brush or toothpick to remove any debris that may obstruct nozzle openings. They can clean their nozzles with a mild detergent.
If problems ever arise in the future, Perkins thinks operators should consider having replacement nozzles on hand as well, while Smith recommends they utilize add-on attachments.
“Attachments, such as high-pressure filters, can reduce nozzle clogging, along with downtime, as nozzles won’t have to be cleaned in the field,” Smith emphasizes.
Tanks. Finally, Perkins advises operators to wash their sprayers’ tanks at least once a week to prevent chemical residuerelated corrosion and flush out remaining mixtures in tanks.
“Operators should clean and rinse tanks used for spraying fertilizers, pesticides, etc., while ensuring tank caps are securely sealed,” Jessel says. “And, they should inspect their tanks for signs of damage.”

Purchasing a new zero-turn mower (ZTR)— or a fleet of them—is no small decision.
“Landscapers are always looking for equipment solutions that will make their lives and the lives of their crews easier, quicker and more productive,” says Jared Nuessen, marketing manager, Toro. “It’s important to keep in mind the type of properties your crew typically maintains throughout a season and purchase equipment that’s best suited for those jobs.”
Nuessen, and Grant Wilson, product director for Gravely Commercial, lay out what landscape pros need to know before tackling that big decision and what they can do to remain a cut above the rest.
Items to consider Timing
The replacement cycle for zero-turn mowers depends on how landscapers operate their business, according to Wilson.
“There are some contractors who don’t want to do any
maintenance, so they may replace their machines on a quicker cycle, but there are a lot of landscapers who are OK doing repair work,” Wilson says. “We’ve seen people who change out their machines every two years when they get to 1,000 hours, and we’ve seen machines that have run for up to 5,000 hours.”
Wilson notes that springtime is a good time to look out for sales and promotions for purchasing ZTRs.
Power source
As technology has improved, landscape pros now have the option between gas- and battery-powered equipment.
“Take a look at the powertrain first—will gas or battery power best meet the needs of your operation?” Nuessen says. “Professional landscape contractors don’t have to sacrifice power or performance with a battery-powered mower, and it may be the better option for their crew.”
Wilson says while electric options are more expensive upfront, there is a quick return on investment.
“Customers can test the machines they’re thinking about,” Wilson says.

will also want to purchase a ZTR that is reliable and high quality.
“Time is money, and downtime costs you money,” Wilson says. “Look for companies that have topnotch support and that are willing to stand behind their customers."
Wilson notes that dealer support is key.
“If you don’t have a strong dealer supporting you, a small thing can become a big thing,” Wilson says.
He recommends researching the dealers’ turnaround time, parts inventory and how many units of a particular machine they’ve sold.
“When you buy the machine, you're not just buying the machine—you’re also signing up for a partnership with your dealer for as long as you own that machine,” Wilson says.
Another factor that can come to mind is cut quality.
“The jobs that landscapers are doing when they’re cutting grass are very visible to everybody, and we want everybody to leave thinking ‘hey, that's a really good job,’” Wilson says.
Style of mower
When choosing between zero-turn models, landscape pros will also want to consider if a stand-on or ride-on ZTR makes sense for their crews.

For residential areas, landscapers may want a mower with a smaller cutting deck to maneuver around obstacles easily, and if noise is a concern, contractors should consider batterypowered units to help their crews meet noise ordinances and extend the mowing timeframe, Nuessen says.
For crews tackling bigger commercial properties, Nuessen says companies may want to consider a ZTR with a larger cutting deck, and for contractors that need to be especially flexible and nimble with just one machine, they may want to consider a mower that features attachments.
Other considerations
To help zero in on their options, landscapers can ask:
• How many acres does the crew mow?
• What type of terrain do they encounter?
• Are there any jobsite obstacles?
• Can crews easily onboard the mower?
• Do they need the mower to perform multiple jobs for attachments?
• What does the warranty look like?
• What type of power source does the mower include?
• What will the overall cost of operation be three to five years down the line?
Landscape contractors should also keep maintenance in mind.
“The less maintenance that contractors have to perform means the more productive they are in the field,” Nuessen says. “With the emergence of battery power in the professional landscaping space, we’ve essentially eliminated all the regular maintenance associated with a traditional engine.”
No matter what type of mower a landscape pro chooses, however, Wilson stresses that preventive maintenance is crucial to the longevity of any machine.
“Make sure you’re scheduling out maintenance ahead of time,” Wilson says.
Reliability and cut quality

“We’ve seen a noticeable bump in overall popularity of stand-on mowers in the landscape contractor equipment marketplace,” Nuessen says. “Many contractors enjoy the increased visibility, ability to get on and off the machine easily, traction and stability on slopes that stand-on mowers can provide. Furthermore, contractors can potentially fit more equipment on their trailers by leveraging the smaller overall footprint of a stand-on machine.”
Wilson agrees.
“From a safety standpoint, if the machine starts to slide, the operator can easily get off, and it’s a lot safer,” Wilson says.
Application
Another key to considering
• What have other landscape pros had to say about the mower?
“During the research process, keep a running list of what each different ZTR unit you’re considering offers and compare it with the questions and considerations above,” Nuessen says. “Will you be able to easily maneuver it on all of your jobsites? Will it stand up to the wear and tear of a long, busy season?”
Wilson notes that a lot of research can be done online before starting the purchasing process.
“We’re living in the age of the internet, so a lot of customers are not going into the dealer to do their research, but rather they’re doing it online beforehand,” Wilson says. “They have become a lot more educated in knowing what they want before they even walk in the dealer’s door.”

A look at the latest in robotic mower technology and how it helps landscape companies become more efficient.
The development in the robotic mowing segment over the last five to 10 years has been tremendous.
“The benefits are there, and we have to lean into the fact that robotics are coming,” says Gabe Foo, vice president of growth at URS Robot. “It’s helping people grow their business, address labor issues and it’s better for the environment. Landscapers should be careful not to stick their head in the sand and think that it’s not coming.”
Experts explain why many landscape pros are choosing to roll with robotics and provide insight into what they can expect for the future of this technology.
What’s new
One major update in the robotic mowing space, according to Billy Otteman, director of marketing at Scythe, has more to do with the people operating them than the mowers.
“People across the industry are way more interested in adoption,” Otteman says. “In robotics, we have a lot of customers who want to see what autonomy can do for their business. The openness within the last year has been quite dramatic.”
A lot of effort has also been geared toward improving the navigation of the robots, according to Benjamin Houssa, vice president of robotics at Echo.
“Systematic pattern mowing is becoming the main trends against random units,” says Houssa.
Wireless solutions are becoming more popular as well, according to Houssa and Foo.
“With wireless solutions, you can create a digital property, store that map in the cloud, drop the robots and they’ll mow in pattern stripes,” Foo says. “Wire is a bad deal because it always breaks later. Rodents eat wire, wires degrade and there’s a lot of ongoing maintenance.”
Houssa agrees.
“For example, our real-time kinematic technology allows 1-inch accuracy positioning, which is necessary to perform this systematic navigation and wireless,” Houssa says.
Increased battery capacity is another update in the robotic sphere, Otteman says.
“As battery technology evolves, the products get more powerful, and more landscape contractors are interested in it,” Otteman says. “For a long time, similar to electric cars, there was hesitation or a stigma around electric equipment that it wasn’t as powerful or couldn’t perform as well, but our battery capacity has been advancing quickly, and now our machines can mow for more than eight hours on a single overnight charge.”

Otteman adds that the battery capacity of robotic mowers will only continue to improve over time.
While many companies have taken the approach of manufacturing their own robotic mowers, Greenzie puts autonomous systems on mowers that already exist, says Charles Quinn, CEO and co-founder of Greenzie.
“One of the biggest things that’s driven down our cost is the accuracy of the GPS,” Quinn says. “That technology combined with software—which is the critical thing we do— can get very accurate straight lines, and you can even get striping.”
Quinn adds that all of those elements combined are helping to address the ongoing labor shortage and make landscape pros more efficient overall.
“Our main goal is to address the labor shortage and make your current crews more productive, more effective and safer,” Quinn says. “It’s also about reduced labor and fuel costs. That’s the name of the game.”
For landscape companies still hesitant about adopting the new technology, Otteman recommends trying the technology before knocking it.

“I want to continue to emphasize the advancements that have been made over the last year and a half, and as that evolves, resistance will fade,” Otteman says. “There’s also an assumed complexity about the products and the difficulty that comes with integrating it into their operations, but if you put the right people in place to help deploy the robots ... we’ve had operators who have really loved the technology.”

When it comes to installing water features, the process is much easier if hardscape contractors have already established a clear flow of procedures.
Evan Hill, owner at Earth Works Outdoor Builders in South Lyon, Mich., discusses the process his company follows and offers advice for other hardscape contractors interested in offering water feature installations.
1. The customer inquiry
Earth Works Outdoor Builders accepts project inquiries in three ways: through email, through a consultation form on its website and via direct phone call.
“When I talk to the customer, I just get them talking about their idea and their plan,” Hill says. “Most of the time, they’re really excited about the project, and they’ve been thinking about it for a long time. It’s a lot different than just going in and laying mulch or mowing lawns.”
2.
The consultation
From there, Earth Works Outdoor Builders sets up a consultation meeting, charging a $150 consultation fee for consultants to meet with the customer for an hour, walk the landscape and talk about the vision.
Additionally, Hill says Earth Works always asks for photos of the proposed installation or rebuild area in advance.
“A lot of times, customers will also present pictures they have from Instagram or Google or something they saw in real life on a trip or something like that,” Hill says. “I may come back to them and say this type of water feature will look too tall or out of place and offer them other options.”
In order to determine the best type of water feature and location of that feature, Hill says there are several items that must be considered.
First and foremost is budget.
“I’m always discussing budgets, and if they have a budget range, I can offer up a few options,” Hill says. “If it’s a case where they really want a specific function, I advise them to wait until

they’re ready (if it’s not currently in their budget). Sometimes customers will wait for a year and then hire me back when they have more money.”
Other considerations include the crew’s ability to access the proposed location for the water feature, whether fish will be included, auditory features, whether the customer wants a pond and/ or decorative features, visibility from inside the house, rock style and so on.
“There are a lot of cases where we’re installing features completely different from what a customer initially wanted, based on those questions I ask,” Hill says.
“For example, the ability to get material in and out of a location with machines reduces manpower, so if you have limited access with machines, that’s going to drive the price up in labor, affecting the total cost and the customer’s budget.”
After Hill offers the proposal and the client accepts, the $150 consultation fee is applied as a credit toward their project’s total costs, and the company asks for a 50 percent deposit to schedule the job.
Typically, Hill says, the job will start a month and a half to two months after the consultation.

3. The installation
Once the job is scheduled, Hill says the installation can take anywhere from one to two weeks to a month for larger projects.
The company uses a John Deere 2038 utility tractor with a backhoe attached to it and makes use of water feature materials from Blue Thumb.
“The backhoe is how we’re excavating all of our holes for ponds and water features, so that does the digging and the trenching, and then on the front of the tractor, we use a combination of attachments depending on the water
feature and its location,” Hill says. “We can carry boulders and soil with them. Once everyone understands how to use the tools and how to rig boulders properly, it’s much safer and protects everyone from getting hurt.”
At this point in his career, Hill says he spends some time with crews on the jobsite, taking the time to show them how to do the installation with hands-on demonstrations.
“The training process can add a week, but we’ll tell customers that we have new crew members training and that I’ll be building the pond with them,”
Hill says. “That way, they’re more aware of how much more time it can take, usually twice as much time as normal.”
For contractors thinking about getting into the water feature segment, Hill recommends they practice an installation at their own house or a family member’s house.
“Have a space where you can put in a water feature and don’t charge for the labor,” Hill says. “That way, you can get experience in real life for how the process works, what you can learn from it and what you can improve upon. The only way to gain that experience is to get that water feature put in the ground.”
4. The customer education
Before crews leave the site, it’s important to educate the customer on the care and maintenance of their water feature.
“Sometimes we install a fountain, and the customer calls a week later to say it’s leaking. However, it’s not leaking—it’s really evaporation,” Hill says. “The amount of water loss is not something customers are thinking about in advance.”
In turn, Earth Works is constantly educating customers on where the water levels should be, when they should fill up the water feature, etc.
“You always want to build your reservoir bigger than you think so it can hold as much water as possible based on the environment and so the customer is not needing to refill it frequently,” Hill says.
Hill also mentions that there will likely be an algae bloom with every new water feature.
“That brand new-water feature’s ecosystem is going to have to balance, and so a few months after the feature is put in, there will be an algae bloom and it’s going to look green,” Hill says.
When that does occur, the company can provide a maintenance cleaning service where crews drain it, power wash it clean, clean the filter media and get it running again.
“Once that initial algae bloom is done, nature has typically taken its course,” Hill says.

KNOW Before You Trench
Soil type, jobsite size, maintenance requirements—these are just a few of the items irrigation professionals need to consider before they begin a project that involves trenching.
Experts from Vermeer Corp. and Little Beaver expand on what irrigation pros should know before they trench.
1. Safety first
The first and most important safety measure when doing any work underground starts before the project. Irrigation pros should call 811 at least three business days before the project starts.
The free service, available in the U.S. and Canada, sends professionals to properties and jobsites to mark the location of underground utility lines.
“From there, once underground utilities are mapped— and before the project starts—it’s a good idea to mark a path for the trench,” says Joe Haynes, president of Little Beaver. “This path increases safety by helping operators avoid tree roots, rocks, underground utilities and other obstacles.”
Other safety items to look for include a slip clutch to protect the machine when encountering an obstacle with the cutter, a shroud around the cutter wheel that protects
against flying debris and whether the trencher operates with a forward push movement, giving operators a clear view of the path ahead and a lower risk of falls or injuries.
2. Project specs
To choose the best trencher for the job at hand, irrigation contractors need to know the specifications of the project they plan to undertake. That will help determine whether they need a large trencher or small trencher, a ride-on trencher or walk-behind machine.
“There’s no need to go for a big, chain-driven trencher if your project requires shallow depth trenching,” says Haynes says. “Not only do these trenchers often dig deeper than needed, but they’re hard on lawns and can’t get into the small spaces mini trenchers can. Mini trenchers are suited for shallow depth trenching between 0.5 inch and 4 inches wide with adjustable depth controls down to 13 inches deep.”
Additionally, Haynes says that mini trenchers can fit through narrow spaces, doorways, fence gates, next to a house or between landscaping features, gliding over delicate turf with pneumatic tires that eliminate the damage caused by larger machines.

3. Ground conditions
Soil type is another factor irrigation pros should keep top of mind, according to Kyle Newendorp, product specialist at Vermeer Corp.
“Whether they work in rocky or clay or sandy soil determines what they want to build their chain around,” Newendorp says, adding that each trencher has cups that dig the dirt and push it to one side and teeth that perform that cutting.
So, for example, if the soil is rockier, irrigation pros will want more teeth. For less rocky or sandy soil or even black dirt, the cups on the trencher become more prevalent, Newendorp says.
4. Tracked or wheeled trencher
It’s also important to decide whether a wheeled or tracked trencher would be most appropriate for the job at hand.
“Tracked machines are popular because of their maneuverability and traction, but they tear up the grass a little bit more,” Newendorp says.
Newendorp notes that with tracked models, irrigation pros should be aware that there’s a little more maintenance to make sure that tracks are tightened.
5. Dedicated trencher or attachment
Irrigation pros should also think about whether they will have other similar projects in the future and whether they want to purchase one dedicated trencher or use a trencher attachment that works with mini skid-steers.
“Having a dedicated machine is great, especially if you have a job every week or every other day, but if you want to have a machine that can do multiple different jobs and use multiple different attachments, that’s where the mini skid-steers with an attachment come into play,” Newendorp says. “You want a trencher that can do all the jobs you submit for.”
For jobs that don’t correlate with the machine they already have on-hand, irrigation pros can work with their local rental yard to find a machine that fits.
6. Operator considerations
Because the operator is the one using the trencher all day long, irrigation companies should consider how ergonomic and easy to use the machines are, Haynes says.
Additionally, irrigation pros should look for a trencher that streamlines the backfill
process to save on time and energy.
7. Maintenance requirements
Irrigation pros should look for a trencher that reduces maintenance costs.
For example, trenchers with replaceable teeth on the cutter wheel reduce maintenance by eliminating the need to replace an entire blade when only a few teeth are damaged, Haynes says. Other maintenance items operators should keep an eye on include common wear parts, grease points, filters, engine maintenance and more.
“Refer to the operator’s manual and be familiar with maintenance timelines,” Haynes says.

BOUNTIFUL AND BEAUTIFUL
How Green Leaf Environmental Landscape Services transformed an unappealing turf-heavy backyard into a luscious vineyard oasis.
What do you get when you remove more than 300 yards of soil and clay to install a vineyard and orchard? An outdoor oasis that is both bountiful and beautiful.
That’s exactly what Green Leaf Environmental Landscape Services did for one of its high-end residential clients in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
“This was definitely a dream project because the client enjoyed the process and the design, which turned out just beautiful,” says Julia Lange, president and CFO of Green Leaf Environmental Landscape Services, which is based in San Diego, Calif.
In addition to reducing the water usage on his property and inputting a vineyard with a large fruit orchard, the client wanted to incorporate privacy by using large trees along the street and sides of the front yard.
To fulfill the client’s vision, crews first removed the entire front yard, including large hardwood trees and an old and dilapidated water feature.
“We removed all the vast lawns and had a clean slate,” Lange says. “We even found a large cantera stone fish at the bottom of the drained water feature that the client didn’t know was there.”
From there, the Green Leaf team built a sizable water feature with two pumps to control the spillways, using the latest technology for autofill and cleaning.
Lange designed the yard with vignettes of planting surrounded by decomposed granite with drought-tolerant specimens.
“The vineyard was designed with table grapes and had
rows of blueberries and blackberries, too. We created a mesh system to cover the entire vineyard during fruiting season to keep the birds and critters out,” Lange says.
The fruit orchard included pistachios, oranges, pears, macadamia nuts, cherry trees and more.
Finally, the company installed stand-up flagstone walkways, concrete bridges, many types of flowering trees and WAC LED lighting around the property such as path lights, hanging lights and driveway lights.
Throughout the process, the company was no stranger to pivoting as the client changed his mind and added four times the number of trees than in the original design Additionally, the large mature fruit trees and grape the client requested proved difficult to find.
With such a large swath of renovation and installation work, the project took almost two years to complete with crews of seven to eight irrigation techs, managers, hardscape experts and laborers.
“The team trained and spent a lot of time using heavy equipment and had a lot of reinforcement on proper planting techniques and mixing of new soils with compost,” Lange says.
The company used large Bobcats, skip loaders, forklifts, trenchers and compactors on this project.
“We do the work in-house as we have an incredibly talented staff,” Lange says. “It was a magical experience to design the project and interact so well with the client.”

Joshua Malik: I was in high school, and right after I graduated, I started with a local tree care company in 1992.
GIP: Tell me a little bit more about your company.
Malik: I had been doing tree care for 13 years when I launched Joshua Tree. From 2005 to 2017, we were doing general tree care and plant health care services. We launched our lawn care department in 2017 and our pest control department in 2020. When I got in the business in 2005, a lot of our competition was focused on bigger tree removal, and we found our niche in the market. Our mission statement is making the home environment safe, healthy and beautiful.
GIP: What have been some of your successes throughout the years?
Malik: We’ve grown to a 65-plus person company and hit more than $7 million in sales last year. We’ve been focusing on developing our people with a lot of inside training, certification and licensing training. We opened up a second branch location in 2021.
GIP: What’s your favorite tool?
Malik: We have old-school values, but we use new-age technology. We believe a lot in software. We have a CRM, SingleOps, that works from the first contact with a client through the sales process. We use technology for everything from our GPS systems for tracking driver safety to email to the Google Drive platform.
GIP: What’s your favorite part about being in the green industry?
Malik: I love arboriculture and caring for trees. When I was younger, I was a big thrill nut, and I loved to skydive and rock climb and motocross race, so climbing trees sounded like a fun job. My first eight years I spent in the field as a climber and crew leader. If you’re pruning trees, you can really see the aesthetic value, and if you’re doing
a removal, there’s obviously that instant satisfaction that you’ve made a difference in making a house safe.
GIP: What do you think the industry could use more of?
Malik: It could use more people. If there was a way that companies could gain the interest of local universities that are providing horticultural or arboriculture programs, that would be really helpful.
GIP: Where do you see the green industry going in the next five to 10 years?
Malik: I think it’s going to continue to grow, and the equipment that’s coming out that focuses on the safety of employees is a very positive foot forward.
GIP: What advice do you have for those just starting out?
Malik: The biggest thing is to start looking at the bigger picture. Planning is super important, and it’s not just a one-year plan but a three- to five-year plan. Also, build a good culture. Younger people want to know they’re having an impact in the success of the company.
GIP: What’re your favorite things to do outside of work?
Malik: I love to mountain bike, camp, hike and hunt. We just moved into a new house, and the first project we’re doing is putting in a big outdoor living space.
