TRADE SHOW TALK

As I sit down to write this, it’s a sweltering 90 degrees F, the sun is blazing and I have recently returned home from SIMA’s annual Snow & Ice Symposium.

While this last trip felt smaller in comparison to others, mostly because I only had to drive two hours rather than let the airlines dictate whether I would make it to my destination on time, I still learned quite a bit about where the snow industry is at right now and what trends are brewing on the horizon. You can find my recap of what I learned during the education sessions at GreenIndustryPros.com.

able to discuss purchasing opportunities with sales reps, learn the ins and outs of the product from product managers and discuss industry trends with their peers?

Speaking of products, this issue of Green Industry Pros encompasses our 2024 Editor’s Choice Awards, a compilation of the top 35 products.

What’s more, the trade show got me excited about others coming down the line this year, most notably, Equip Expo in Louisville in October and the National Association of Landscape Professionals’ Elevate event in Charlotte in November. Obviously, the Snow & Ice Symposium zeroed in on snow products, which is only one small segment of the industry, but I have a feeling that the trade shows coming down the road will be bigger and better than ever. Plus, what better place for landscape professionals to be

The products listed represent each segment of the industry: software, mowing and maintenance, lawn care, design/build and installation, irrigation and lighting, tree care and snow care.

We received quite a few submissions this year, and it was tough to cut down the list. You can find the complete list of winners on p. 10.

What about you? What products have made your business run a little smoother and helped you sleep a little better at night? Are they included on our roundup? I’d love to hear your thoughts— and I’m sure your fellow readers would, too. Email your ideas to swebb@iron. markets or connect with me on LinkedIn by following the link below.

In addition to our Editor’s Choice Awards, you can find stories on the latest on government regulations (p. 26); the different techniques for tree care services (p. 30); insight into what makes a smart irrigation system smart (p. 33); and much more.

Looking ahead, make sure you check out next month’s issue, where we will take a sneak peek into this year’s Equip Expo and all the products and equipment that will be on display there.

Until next time!

2024 Editor’s Choice Award Winners: Champions of Innovation

A compilation of the top 35 products in the green industry that make landscape professionals more efficient and effective in their operations.

Champion. Honoree. Winner. These words all come to mind to describe this year’s recipients of the Editor’s Choice Awards.

Unlike this year’s Olympic Games athletes, the winners of this award don’t have to pull off a stunning balance beam routine, capture the winning time in a race event or outsmart their opponents in a game of wit.

Rather, these products help landscape professionals balance the daily demands of their business, save on time, money and labor and work smarter, not harder.

Like the athletes of this year’s Olympic Games, the manufacturers of these products have poured countless hours into making them perfect, tested and

retested their performance and spent much of their time thinking about how to make them better.

That’s why Green Industry Pros recognizes these products with the 2024 Editor’s Choice Awards.

For this year’s Editor’s Choice Awards, the Green Industry Pros staff zeroed in on 35 products.

We selected products that represent every sector in the green industry: business management; lawn care; mowing and maintenance; equipment and technology; hardscapes and design; irrigation and lighting; and snow and ice control.

Without further ado, check out this year’s winners.

The 5-metric ton class machine packs a lot of power into a compact design, so operators can work up close to buildings or other structures in tight jobsites. It features an array of compatible attachments and options. With standard multifunctional hydraulics and a second auxiliary circuit, as well as an optional third auxiliary circuit, this machine can power a wide assortment of attachments. In addition, the Case CX50D offers an optional dedicated auxiliary hydraulic circuit to run advanced attachments such as a mulching head, making it a useful tool for clearing brush or wooded sites. Landscaping crews can also opt for a six-way blade to boost capabilities for backfilling or light grading. The new CX50D helps fill out the D Series lineup in the 4- to 5-metric ton class, carrying over many of the operator-friendly features and options customers expect from Case, including an automotive-style cab with autoclimate control, a customizable LCD screen and an optional object handling kit with check valves on the boom and arm for material handling applications.

Manitou Midrange SSLs and CTLs

Three all-new Manitou skid-steer loaders (the 2100 V, 2300 V and the 2750 V) and three new compact track loaders (the 2100 VT, 2300 VT and 2750 VT) are vertical lift and feature a new lift arm design meant to improve visibility. The operator experience has also been improved with an update on Manitou’s patented folding door—and the new cab further improves visibility with a new window and roof design. Breakout forces and tank capacities are increased. IdealTrax patented track-tensioning system tensions the track to the proper tension when the machine is started and relieves the tension when the machine is turned off, which prolongs the track’s life and makes cleaning out the tracks easier. Instead of greasing to achieve proper tension every 50 hours or so, Manitou uses a hydraulic system to keep constant tension on the tracks. One of the most distinct features of the new Manitou skid-steers and CTLs is the extremely robust vertical-lift, slopedarm design that both improves visibility and reduces the amount of material that gathers on the arms and allows for all hydraulic lines to be routed in or under the arms for greater protection.

Rain Bird 11000 Series Rotors

The Rain Bird 11000 Series Rotor was developed to meet the specific needs of sports fields, stadiums and large commercial turf applications. Drawing on its expertise in golf rotor technology, Rain Bird aimed to address the challenge of achieving uniform water distribution while minimizing the number of irrigation heads required. The 11000 Series reduces the number of rotors required for effective irrigation. Traditional 1-inch rotor solutions generally necessitate 35 heads around a sports field’s perimeter, with 15 on the field itself. The 11000 Series can cover the same area with only 22 rotors–eight of which are on the field–thanks to its 105-foot radius. This reduction lowers the installation and maintenance costs while minimizing the impact on athletes due to the rotor’s smallexposed diameter of 2.7 inches. Key features of the 11000 Series Rotor include a water-lubricated, gear-driven pop-up mechanism, a heavy-duty stainless steel retract spring and a Seal-A-Matic check valve to prevent low-head drainage. The rotor provides both nonreversing full-circle and 30-degree to 345-degree reversing part-circle operation in a single unit, with an optional opposing nozzle. Maintenance is simplified with topserviceable components and snap-ring access for easy adjustments. Customizable options, such as sod cups and rubber covers (in green for synthetic turf or purple for nonpotable water use) allow for the adaptation to specific field conditions. The efficient design, ease of installation and reliable performance of the 11000 Series Rotor make it an ideal choice for sports turf managers seeking to maintain high-quality, wellirrigated fields.

Telematics in Action

Landscape professionals discuss how they best leverage GPS + telematics technology to their advantage.

Picture this: Your landscape maintenance company is running several crews spread out over different sites across the city. One crew texted that they can’t quite find the right location. Another messaged that their truck is in need of an oil change. And a third reached out to say they don’t think they’ll get to everyone on the day’s schedule due to a route miscommunication. That’s where a telematics system comes into play.

“If you’re going to grow, you need it,” says Gino Fanello, owner, CEO and president of Gino’s L&L Service in Peotone, Illinois. “The biggest thing is peace of mind. It shouldn’t be a trust issue with your crew. Everyone in the crew should be aware they’re for security reasons and for production time reasons and to help manage everyone.”

Fanello and Jeff Heller, president of Innovative Maintenance Solutions in Indianapolis, lay out how telematics systems have benefitted their companies.

Why implement?

Gino’s L&L Service incorporated Linxup about three seasons ago when it realized it needed a way to know where crews were.

“How could you manage people when you don’t know where they’re at?” Fanello says. “I didn’t want to have to be always texting and calling asking where they’re at and how long they have.”

The biggest benefit, Fanello says, has been garnering production times by seeing how long crews have been at a site.

“It’s been very beneficial that I can see how long a lawn takes to make sure that we’re priced accordingly,” Fanello says.

Gino’s L&L Service also uses it to determine when certain vehicles may need preventive maintenance.

“We still have our manual logs in the shop that we use, but this helps with the systems we’re trying to keep in place so everything runs smoothly,” Fanello says.

Innovative Maintenance Solutions implemented Timeero five years ago for similar reasons.

“As landscapers and even as snow contractors, we’ve seen it be harder and harder to maintain acceptable margins in the business,” Heller says. “We needed to find a way where we could better manage costs. Instituting that was a relatively inexpensive way to be able to accomplish all of

Gino’s L&L Service uses telematics to keep track of its crews.
Gino’s L&L Service

that with the side benefit of being able to show our insurance company the driving records, which has lowered our insurance costs as well.”

Heller adds that it’s made scheduling dispatch a lot easier.

“We were able to avoid overlapping schedules, and we were able to quickly adjust schedules to accommodate for other unforeseen events like weather, illness or a crew member being out,” Heller says.

While Heller says crews were initially hesitant about the technology for fear of it acting like “Big Brother,” they came around to the idea when the company talked to them about exactly why they were using it.

“There was a conversation with them, and they were worried about being tracked and micromanaged, but they figured out pretty quickly that wasn’t our aim,” Heller says. “It was actually to increase efficiencies and ultimately help them do their jobs better.”

How to onboard

Fanello says there were relatively few learning curves with onboarding.

“They just sent it, we plug it right in and registered on the app,” Fanello says. “We’re pretty much good to go from there. It was very simple.”

Heller notes that any potential roadblocks were easily navigated through the technical help and training that came from the provider.

“It was a relatively easy system to pick up and use primarily because everything was geared to landscapers to begin with,” Heller says, adding that one of the main items the company looked for in onboarding a system was a provider that had experience in the landscape industry.

For other business looking to incorporate telematics into their operations, Fanello recommends landscape pros look into it sooner rather than later.

“If you’re trying to be in a managerial position and send those crews out, it’s going to help you manage those crews much more efficiently,” Fanello says.

Heller recommends asking providers for a demo of the product.

“That will relieve a lot of fears for people worried about cost or implementation,” Heller says. “I would suggest others to do it for the cost savings and operational efficiencies that will translate to a much better bottom line.”

Gino’s L&L Service

Gino’s L&L Service also uses GPS tracking to help estimate production times.

THERE’S NOTHING SMALL ABOUT THE WAY THEIR BUSINESS

IMPACTS YOURS.

Because at your local authorized Kawasaki Engines dealer, the experience is about more than the quality engines or maintenance items you may purchase. It’s about the partnership you make with the people that know the business as well as you do.

Regulations

Review

An

industry advocate discusses the latest updates in regulations and legislation affecting the green industry.

Green Industry Pros sat down with Andrew Bray, senior vice president of government relations and membership of the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP), to discuss the most recent regulation affecting the green industry.

Green Industry Pros: Why do landscapers need to stay on top of regulations?

Bray: I think it’s extremely important because the regulations and policies enacted at a national level and in all 50 states can have a profound impact, both negative and positive, on their landscape business, whether it be on profitability, safety or even complying with a new law.

GIP: How can landscape pros ensure they are staying up to date on regulations?

Bray: NALP has a weekly newsletter geared specifically toward advocacy. It’s also staying in tune with your local community. We track everything at the federal and state levels, but the local level can be harder to track. That’s where being engaged with your local chamber of commerce or sitting on the board of homeowner associations can be the place where you find out about things that are coming down the pathway.

GIP: Can you give an update on H-2B?

Bray: Essentially the cap is 66,000. In each of the last seven years, we have been able to put in appropriations that give

the administration this discretionary authority to release supplemental visas. To our delight, the Biden Administration, in the last two years, has released the full amount of supplemental visas, which is 64,716 extra visas. They’ve done so in November or December, giving certainty to our people who are applying for the first half so they can have access to supplemental visas. That is important for some of our members because some of our members have a start date that could be in mid- to-late February to early March in warmer climates. This also alleviates some of the stress on the second-half cap.

We had a fly-in event in late May where we had approximately 140 members show up and had over 150 meetings scheduled. This all lined up with the House moving their appropriations package out of committee. In the committee, we had some of our champions offer an amendment that would change the language that we’ve used the last few years by changing one word: ‘may’ to ‘shall.’ The word ‘may’ provides the administration discretionary authority, meaning they get the chance to determine if those supplemental visas are released, where ‘shall’ automatically triggers that when the cap is hit, the extra 64,716 should be released. The reason we wanted this so badly is that there’s no guarantee that the Biden Administration is going to release them again, and we have serious concerns that the Trump Administration is going to be openly hostile to the H-2B program. Unfortunately, the Rules Committee stripped out our ‘may’ to ‘shall’ language and reverted to the standard discretionary ‘may’ that we have had the last seven years. While we appreciate at least having that language, we are extremely frustrated that language that simply maintains the status quo of the last two years couldn’t

be included to increase certainty for seasonal businesses. This was not completely unexpected, and we have several more options. First, we always knew we would be in a CR this fall, which only has the discretionary language, which means we are already in conversations with the Biden Administration to release the 64,716 in October or November.

Andrew Bray

Second, the Senate is completely in play with our ‘may’ to ‘shall’ language already under consideration with Appropriators like Collins (R-ME) and Murphy (D-CT) that are supportive. Last, we will be pushing for this while we’re in a CR during the lame duck Congress this winter, when there are additional opportunities to include cap relief provisions.

GIP: What’s going on with the Farm Bill?

Bray: We have positive developments there as well. We want to get language into the Farm Bill that prevents localities from regulating pesticides and ensures that it’s always the state that

So, we’re in the House, and we’re at play in the Senate. Here’s the part that’s very tricky about this issue. The Senate Republicans believe pretty certainly that they’re going to take the Senate, so they have very little motivation to move a Farm Bill they don’t like when they’re not in control. If that happens, we’re going to be in great shape. On the flipside, if the House flips back to Democrat, then the @PX

regulates the sale and use of pesticides. I am happy to report that the House actually moved their Farm Bill out of committee. It was a very partisan bill. There’s a lot of Democrats that didn’t love the bill, but it has nothing to do with our provision. It’s more about food stamps and the amount of funding going toward some green initiatives. Our language cleared out of committee.

Now, we’ll have it move across the House floor. We have been told that it’s likely going to happen in September. Now we are working to make sure we can get bipartisan support for the overall package in this hyperpartisan world.

House is going to have to pass their own Farm Bill. Again, it’ll likely be under Democratic control. The good thing for us is we have some bipartisan support for our provision. If we can’t get the provision on the Farm Bill, we’re going to be working on an appropriations strategy, which is similar to what we’ve done on H-2B. The reason we don’t love the appropriations strategy is that you’re not making a permanent fix; you’re just doing an annual band-aid. On the state level, we’ve had some significant wins this year. In Colorado, they were trying to roll back pesticide prevention, and we’ve been fighting that for several years, and it looked like they were going to be able to do it, but we were able to fend it off because of some great engagement by members in Colorado. What happened in Colorado was a huge win for the industry and a great blueprint for how we have to attack these issues throughout the nation.

GIP: What’s the latest with the overtime regulations in the white-collar exemption?

Bray: This is only for people in the office. The people in the field have to get paid overtime. The rule was published very recently, and as expected, the threshold is going to raise to about $50,000. So, the current threshold is $35,568. If you’re making below that, you have to be paid overtime. That threshold is going to raise to $43,888 on July 1, and then January of 2025, it will go all the way up to $58,656. This has been litigated heavily. However, I do believe that at the end of this litigation, we are going to see a significant increase in the salary threshold.

GIP: What about heat safety?

Bray: There are several states that already have a heat standard, like California, and a lot of states follow California’s suit. On July 2, the Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Standards published the much-anticipated new standards for workplace safety pertaining to heat in both outdoor and indoor settings. NALP was involved with providing feedback to OSHA on much of what has been introduced, and upon initial review, we believe that compliance will likely not be overly burdensome, but we are closely reviewing specifically with regard to some of the active monitoring.

GIP: And finally, do you have an update on emissions regulations?

Bray: The whole gas to electric transition is obviously very topical, but we’re seeing more on that front at the local and state level. Over the last two years, approximately 15 states have attempted to move forward with some sort of equipment ban, whether it be just leaf blowers or everything. Today, only California has been successful in doing that. We have fought back many proposals through various states, but that issue is not going away. So, my advice to landscape professionals is to begin to integrate electrical equipment into your fleet so that you understand its capabilities and you understand how to work with it, and you can begin to absorb the cost easier than doing it when you’re told you have to. Aside from that, the other advice is, if you’re hearing about a ban, let us know. Be very aware of that as a topical issue for our industry right now.

REGULATORY COMMENTARY: Neonicotinoid Insecticide Bans

An expert weighs in on the implications of neonicotinoid insecticide bans for the lawn care and landscape industry.

Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment

In recent years, continuing calls for neonicotinoid insecticide bans sparked intense debate and stirred concerns across industries reliant on effective pest management solutions. Ripple effects are particularly felt within the lawn care and landscape sector. With continuing calls for a prohibition on these products, understanding the nuanced impacts and navigating the evolving regulatory landscape aren’t just good business but are essential for the sustainability of our industry.

We can all agree that neonicotinoids and other insecticides are essential tools for maintaining public and private places and spaces and protecting turf, trees, ornamental plants and forest lands from harmful and invasive species. These important products are regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act and undergo rigorous, science-based processes that thoroughly evaluate the safety and efficacy of pesticides before they can be offered for sale and use. Both federal and state review processes for pesticides consider hundreds of scientific studies, product chemistry, exposure and dispersion methods. Despite the existing regulatory framework, we’re continuing to see unnecessary and sometimes duplicative regulation at the state level. This year, New York enacted Senate Bill 1856, which restricts the use of neonicotinoid pesticides in nonagricultural settings. Four states introduced legislation to restrict neonicotinoid use—Arizona, Connecticut, Hawaii and Washington and legislation passed in Vermont.

The constant pressure on neonicotinoid insecticides means we must stay current about pesticide regulation and what it means to obtain an EPA registration for a product. The EPA registration process ensures that when applied according to the label, products can be used safely. Neonicotinoids are important insecticides for controlling common insect problems, such as grubs that eat grass roots and aphids that remove nutrients from plant leaves and stems, as well as for treating invasive emerald ash borer infestations and the hemlock woolly adelgid. This class of chemistry is also essential to have in rotation for effective resistance management as well as available for native pests entering

new states and for invasive species from other countries.

Telling your story is an important aspect of ensuring access to the pesticide tools you need to maintain plant health and the environment. Talk about integrated pest management and the role a range of solutions plays in resistance management with people outside of our industry, especially elected officials. This is the information policymakers need to hear from applicators, who are also registered voters.

It’s an election year. Newly elected officials from town councils to the United States Congress will need to know about your practices, people and the benefits you are delivering every day. Please answer their calls to action and proactively introduce yourself to those just elected and serving their first terms in office. They need to know you as an expert and a resource.

Please consider visiting with your city council members, your state elected officials or your members of Congress’ district office or even attending a fundraiser. Your engagement makes a positive difference to our industry’s reputation and to continued product availability. People must be reminded of the value of your work and the positive impacts of pesticide products and their applications. Let’s keep the conversation going by telling our story and building new relationships within and outside of our industry.

Stay informed about this issue through your national and state associations and your state lead agency for pesticide regulation. You can also join the conversation. As an applicator, you are the expert on product use and benefits. Your expertise and experience are key in conversations with policymakers and regulators.

Together, we can tell our story, and in the process, maintain access to the necessary and effective tools that provide people and communities with the safe and well-maintained places and spaces they count on for work and play.

MOWING & MAINTENANCE

Tree Care Tidbits

How tree care professionals can maintain the health of trees.

Just as humans rely on medicine to prevent future illness and heal from current ones, so too can trees require injection remedies.

Arborjet SE Regional Technical Manager and ISA Certified Arborist JB Toorish and Lisa McCoy, vice president of sales and operations at Mauget, explain.

What injections are

For trunk injection technology, control products are injected directly into the tree’s vascular tissue. This helps control pests and diseases and correct nutrient deficiencies like chlorosis. The injections are performed through a port that is placed behind the cambium and into the xylem tissue.

“The port acts as a one-way valve that moves the product directly into the vascular tissue and seals the product into the tree,” Toorish says. “The pressure from the injection remains behind the plug, which helps to move the product through the vascular system into the tree canopy. The port, when properly set, does not injure the tree; it actually aids

in the compartmentalization process.”

Injections can be appropriate for any type of tree, but they are typically needed when tree is near water, in a sensitive area (such as a pool or parking lot) or in areas that are too large to spray. Trunk injection is generally the best choice when the tree is infected with a serious invasive pest that will eventually kill the tree if it’s left untreated. These pests can include emerald ash borer, pine bark beetle, hemlock woolly adelgid, palm weevil and lethal bronzing of palms.

Currently, there are several types of trunk injections that incorporate various equipment and techniques.

For example, macro infusion uses a large volume of product injected through root flares, micro infusion uses IV bottles and micro injection uses syringe-type applications. Caps or capsules are another technique that contain product attached directly to tree.

The main advantages of tree care injections, Toorish says, are efficacy, multiyear protection and direct delivery to the target pest.

McCoy adds that tree care injections

provide the following additional benefits:

• No drift or off target chemical exposure to the environment

• No water contamination concerns

• No soil contamination or runoff

• “Closed” chemical application system

• Systemic application, where the active ingredient is inside the tree

• Less exposure for beneficial insects

• Efficient, targeted chemical application

• No mixing or loading

• Less active ingredient per acre means more plants treated

• Small injection site

• No hardware left in the tree

• Excessive mulch does not affect application

“The chemical stays where it’s supposed to—in the tree,” McCoy says. “In addition, with restrictions on the amounts of materials that can be used per acre, more trees can be treated with a lower amount of pesticide.”

Toorish adds that appropriately timed applications pose no risk to beneficial predators and pollinators.

Following an injection, tree care professionals may want to perform quarterly or yearly inspections and follow up with periodic fertilization and soil amendments to enhance the overall health and vigor of the trees and plant material, according to Toorish.

“Offering other services in the program such as the use of plant growth regulators, pruning, root crown excavation and vertical mulching can also improve tree health and vigor,” Toorish says.

Education is key

Tree care professionals performing any kind of injection work should be equipped with the following personal protective equipment (PPE): long sleeves, gloves, eye protection, long pants, socks and shoes, McCoy says.

“You always want to wear PPE especially when using insecticides,” McCoy says. “We don’t ever want anybody to get contaminated.”

Additionally, before tree care professionals decide to perform a tree injection, they need to be properly trained.

“We recommend that service providers get trained in how the methodology works and how to target pest problems,” Toorish says. “Learning how to set plugs, the number of plugs needed, placement of plugs and how different tree vascular systems function is essential for successful treatments.”

Some providers will offer training at no cost and provide hands-on demonstrations and online resources to help tree care professionals become comfortable with the technology.

In addition to educating themselves, tree care pros should also educate their customers on all plant care health options and notify them about what current pests are in the area so they can create a proactive approach.

“We recommend the integrated pest management (IPM) approach,” Toorish says. “IPM uses knowledge of pest and host biology in combination with biological and environmental monitoring to respond to pest problems with management tactics.”

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, several tree care injection providers are looking to improve formulations so they are easier to use and lessen the impact on labor, Toorish says.

Granular products and batterypowered tree injection devices may help fill these gaps.

“Whether overnight charging routines are preferred or there is access to daytime charging throughout the workday, these practices can significantly impact a crew’s workflow and their ability to meet productivity needs,” Toorish says.

Chainsaw Talk

At times, tree care professionals will use other tools as well, such as chainsaws. Jake Teitler, senior manager of product marketing at Milwaukee Tool, provides a few maintenance tips when using this type of equipment.

“Ensuring a chainsaw is maintained properly can be critical to the safety of its operation in application and the efficiency of its operator,” Teitler says.

Outside the Box, Inside the Lines

As many tree care pros know, efficiency is key on tight, compact jobsites.

“These jobsites often require extra care not to damage a homeowner’s lawn, existing landscaping or hardscape structures,” says Brant Kukuk, product manager at Ditch Witch. “Operators need to be aware of a variety of issues that can cause costly downtime as well as equipment or property damage. With their narrow and compact design, stand-on skid-steers allow tree care professionals the ability to maneuver around obstacles and through fence gates with ease.”

Below are advantages of using skidsteers on a jobsite, according to Kukuk:

• Increased visibility: A stand-on skid-steer gives operators an unobstructed, 360-degree view of the jobsite. The absence of a cab significantly enhances visibility. This increased visibility is crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring precise operation. Additionally, the quick hopon, hop-off capability of stand-on skid-steers facilitates seamless task transitions, improving overall productivity. With the simplicity of the easy-on, easy-off platform, the operator can transition as needed between helping the cutter with his or her responsibilities and operating the machine.

• Variety of attachments: Whether operators are looking to make fewer cuts, auger a hole or install a new tree, stand-on machines have at least 10 interchangeable attachments that are beneficial to tree-care-related tasks. Each of these attachments is easily fitted onto a machine, allowing tree care professionals to quickly switch in the field. This simplicity and versatility means that tree care professionals only need to bring one machine to a jobsite. Before deciding to use a skid-steer on a jobsite, Kukuk says operations must adhere to the following protocols:

• The size and weight of a stand-on skid-steer must be appropriately matched with the attachments being used to ensure stability and safety. The machine must have sufficient counterbalancing capacity to handle the load of the attachment.

• When working with attachments, the standard rule of thumb is that an operator should have three industryspecific attachments in their arsenal. For example, a tree care professional might have a grapple, bucket and stump grinder to complete a variety of tree care-related tasks.

• Contractors should always consult their local dealers. They are a vital resource for questions surrounding jobsite conditions, local regulations and industry insights. Visiting a local dealer allows contractors to test out equipment and work with the dealer to ensure they make a well-informed decision.

All Systems Go: A Guide to Smart Irrigation Systems

Irrigation experts lay out why a smart irrigation system involves more than just a smart controller.

Contrary to what some believe, a smart controller will not fix a faulty irrigation system.

“A smart controller will make poor design, installation and maintenance practices even more obvious,” says Don Davis, irrigation training manager for SiteOne Landscape Supply. “Smart controller accessories can provide additional opportunities to avoid potential water waste.”

Davis and Steven Barendt, senior product manager for Rain Bird Corp., lay out a few additional accessories that make irrigation systems smarter.

Controller

A smart controller uses weather data to monitor and adjust run times.

updates to run times to ensure we’re only giving the proper amount of water based on the local temperature,” Barendt says.

Most smart controllers require internet access. Irrigation pros should verify connectivity where the controller will be located prior to installation, Davis says.

Ideally, the system will also have a freeze/rain sensor.

“An on-site rain/freeze sensor will ensure that we’re not irrigating after a rain event or during a freeze event,” Barendt says.

Pressure regulator

valves,” Davis says. “Upon completion of the irrigation cycle, the master valve is deenergized and closes.”

When the master valve is deenergized, this prevents water from flowing downstream.

Soil moisture sensor

Soil moisture sensors measure the volumetric water (actual water) content in the soil. If the sensor measures over a specific moisture threshold in the soil, it will suspend and irrigation cycle, preventing water applications when they are not needed, Davis says.

Both wired and wireless options are available, and an annual calibration may be needed for smarter watering results.

“It doesn’t know your zones simultaneously irrigate both sun and shade areas, and it doesn’t know you program every station with the same run time regardless of the sprinkler type or plant water requirements,” Davis says.

However, Barendt says the controller can help attain local weather information for a site via an on-site weather sensor and/or technology that enables the controller to gather weather information from the internet.

“Gathering weather information for the site allows controllers to make

Pressure-regulating technology helps ensure the pressure is consistent throughout the system and keeps the pressure within the manufacturer’s recommended range.

“If pressure is high, pressure regulation saves a tremendous amount of water,” Barendt says

Flow-sensing technology

Many systems are also compatible with flow sensing technology. Any variance in flow will create a local alarm at the controller and can provide text or email notifications via internet platforms.

“Oftentimes, a flow sensor and installation pays for itself with one event, either a high flow condition where there is a broken mainline or lateral line with catastrophic loss of water, or a low flow condition where there may be loss of landscape at stake,” Barendt says.

Master valve

A normally closed master valve is an irrigation valve installed upstream of any other outlets in the irrigation system.

“The master valve is energized to open during an irrigation cycle, allowing pressurized water to reach the zone

However, Barendt cautions that using a soil moisture sensor would require a user to find a single spot on a small/medium property or possibly a couple spots on a rather large commercial property that are representative of the entirety of the soil.

“Location of the sensor is critical and could be the downfall of the intended goal of an irrigation system: maintaining a healthy landscape,” Barendt says.

Barendt adds that hydrozoning is the key to an efficient and smart irrigation system. This means that plants with similar water needs are placed together, but also, irrigation zones or stations are assigned based on soil types and exposure to the elements (rainfall, sun, shade, etc.).

“If the system is set up this way and run times are scheduled accordingly, then smart controller weather adjustments would be more effective than a single sensor placed somewhere in the system,” Barendt says. “‘More effective’ means striking the right balance of maintaining a healthy landscape while conserving the maximum amount of water.”

ADAM LINNEMANN

Owner and founder, Linnemann Lawn Care and Landscaping and The Green Executive

Green Industry Pros: How did you get into the industry?

Linnemann: I started my landscaping business at the age of 14 with a push mower and a riding mower and a wagon behind it mowing lawns throughout the neighborhood. When I was a senior in high school, I purchased a brand-new pickup truck. I eventually grew the business to 25 employees. Now, we have maintenance crews, lawn care technicians and several designbuild crews. In 2017, my wife Sahra and I started The Green Executive. We were in peer groups, and much of it was things we already knew, and we felt a lot of it was accountability and holding people to what they’re learning. Now have three or four service offerings. We offer Profit First implementation, which is a cash flow management system, bookkeeping services and then how to help implement software.

GIP: How do you divide your time between the two businesses?

Linnemann: I have hours and days a week that I work at the consulting business, and then the rest of the time, I work at my landscaping business, particularly focusing on sales and marketing. I have some good people that are able to run the business without me having to be there.

GIP: What’ve been some of the highlights in your career?

Linnemann: When we implemented LMN and went all in with a software, it did several things for us. Number 1, it allowed us to truly have processes and procedures in place, and it allowed us to keep all of our client information and job scheduling in one place. So, by just having a software and really rolling up our sleeves and going all in with it allowed us to become much more organized and process driven.

GIP: What challenges have you contended with and how did you combat those?

Linnemann: I would say hiring good qualified help. We’ve been forced to hire for attitude and train for skill. It’s bringing people in that are eager to work that might not necessarily have the experience but who fit in well with our culture and with our team and who are going to show up every day.

GIP: What has made your life easier?

Linnemann: Years ago, we hired an office coordinator, Peggy, and she handles our invoicing and estimating. Hiring someone that can help us out in the office took a lot off my shoulders. If we’re talking tools or equipment, having something like a mini track loader or skid-steer literally replaces two or three people, so that equipment has been really efficient. We use the Vermeer brand.

GIP: What advice would you give other landscape pros just starting out?

Linnemann: Know and understand your numbers. Don’t wait five or 10 years. Understand your costs, your breakeven, what it costs to keep the lights on and make sure you turn a profit on top of that. The second thing is that a business needs to pay the owner for his time and turn a profit on top of that. Oftentimes, contractors think that profit equals the owner’s pay, and it doesn’t.

GIP: What could the industry use more of?

Linnemann: I wish there were more women in the industry. I have found women to be much more detailoriented than men, and I think that’s huge. I also think having customers be able to connect with women is very beneficial.

GIP: What do you like to do outside of work?

Linnemann: We love to go to Cancún a couple times a year. Another major hobby is ATV riding. We go down to Southern Missouri and the Mark Twain National Forest and go ATV riding along some of the rivers and springs.
