Our Programs INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING

Content, instructional technology, and pace of learning are all tailored to the abilities and interests of each learner. Goals based on curriculum design and national standards are the same for all students, but the plan for each student varies according to an individual child’s talents, interests and needs. Learning is viewed as a continuous journey in which teachers identify students’ needs and use a variety of assessment data to inform their teaching. Half-Day Preschool for 2-3 year olds runs from 9am-12pm and is part of the Spanish Dual Language Immersion track. Children engage in both Montessori experiences and International Baccalaureate (IB) academic units of inquiry. The focus is on developing self-management skills, social independence, creativity and confidence. Half-Day Preschool for 3 year olds who still nap and are mastering toileting also runs from 9am-12pm and is part of the Spanish Dual Language Immersion track. Montessori pedagogy and practices are employed alongside the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) curricula. Full-Day Preschool for 3 & 4 year olds runs from 9am-3pm and offers a choice of Spanish or Mandarin Dual Language Immersion tracks with English. Students are engaged with both the Montessori method and the IB PYP curricula. Junior Kindergarten is tailored toward children who have had significant Preschool experience and have the maturity and academic skills necessary to be successful in a more teacher guided inquiry-based program. This track fosters readiness for students who will be entering a rigorous Kindergarten program the following year. This class is offered by invitation, after assessment from the Head of School.

We ignite inquisitive spirits and establish tangible connections to emerging technologies, international cultures, and care for our planet.

Kindergarten is open to children who will turn 5 years old by December 31st of their entering school year. The curriculum is defined by the IB PYP, and is supported by resources and methodologies from a variety of sources, including Montessori, Reading and Writing Workshops from Teachers College Columbia University, and Mathematics Investigations developed at TERC (Technical Educational Research Centers) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These are the same resources used by our network of over 5,000 of the most acclaimed schools worldwide. When entering in Kindergarten, families may choose a Mandarin or Spanish Dual Language Immersion track. Pine Street School’s elementary program builds on the same methodologies and resources introduced in Kindergarten. Our curriculum encourages both emotional and academic achievement, challenging students to excel in their learning and in their personal development. We offer a technology-enabled, project-based problem solving setting that nurtures passion with a purpose for life-long learners.

International Baccalaureate Pine Street School is the only authorized IB World School in New York City offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) along with Spanish and Mandarin Dual Language Immersion. The IB PYP curriculum is designed for children age 3-11 and is taught in more than 1,200 world class schools in over 100 countries across the globe. The curriculum focuses on global issues, explored in a transdisciplinary manner. Teachers collaborate in building a cohesive program of inquiry across all academic disciplines, and utilize real world problem solving as the means of acquiring traditional skills alongside an enduring understanding of ‘how’ to learn. Students develop into capable and thoughtful independent learners who have the innate ability to apply themselves meaningfully in the real world.

Montessori The Montessori method is a child-centered education approach with over 100 years of success in diverse cultures worldwide. This approach values each individual child physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. The goals of a Montessori Education are to: • Foster competent, responsible, adaptive citizens who are lifelong learners and problem solvers • Promote learning in an inquiring, cooperative, nurturing atmosphere through self- and teacher-initiated experiences • Support learning through the senses, by manipulating materials and interacting with others, leading to the abstract understanding of ideas Pine Street School’s Preschool areas are set up with materials for Mathematics, Language, Sensorial, and Practical Life learning. As students progress through Preschool and into Kindergarten our program shifts focus to the IB PYP’s depth and academic rigor.

Dual Language Immersion Pine Street School is an international school with over 20 countries and 15 languages represented. We believe that fluency in more than one language is not only a cognitive advantage, but the key to becoming a collaborative world citizen.

Athletics, Multimedia, Performing Arts (AMP)

City As Source

ATHLETICS

New York City is one of the most dynamic and resource-rich settings in the world for education. At Pine Street School we believe that engaged, hands-on experiences are the most effective encouragement students can be given to get the maximum value out of learning. To that end we ensure that all of our of our students, from Kindergarten on, make weekly field trips to places of historic and academic value that add context and content to their units of study, while bringing theory to life. Local experts in fields from arts to engineering make classroom visits and host students in their workplaces to run skills workshops and help advance student-led projects. Individual passions are seeded and developed for each child as they come to understand how to navigate their city and primary research sources, in order to get the very best out of their virtual and physical surroundings.

Our Athletics Director oversees a weekly schedule of physical education and activity designed to hone specific athletic skills, build teamwork, and guide students on the path to a healthy lifestyle. Activities like ball handling, yoga, martial arts and tumbling take place on-site in our Movement Studio. Students visit specialty facilities for swimming and team sports.

MULTIMEDIA Students use a variety of materials and media to understand how to produce different visual effects in 2D and 3D media. They learn and use expert vocabulary and study art from various styles, geographies, techniques, and eras.
