HOUSE NOTES

ACCESSIBILITY

Welcome to the Oakville Centre! We ask that you follow these simple guidelines to ensure a pleasant and memorable experience for all.

The Oakville Centre and the Town of Oakville place a high priority on accessibility to the public. We are constantly striving to meet the needs of our customers.

In consideration of those in the audience who may have allergies, please refrain from using perfume or cologne when attending a performance.

Patrons requiring wheelchair or accessible seating arrangements are asked to call the box office at 905-815-2021 or e-mail us at boxoffice@oakville.ca. Our box office staff will be happy to book accessible seating and answer any questions you may have regarding accessibility at the Oakville Centre.

Cell phones and other electronic devices should be muted and not used while in the theatre. Photography and recording devices are strictly prohibited inside the auditorium.

Accessible features include curb cuts at sidewalks and a ramp to the entrance of the theatre on Navy and Church street approach. Our main entrance doors are equipped with electronic openers and the auditorium offers handrails.

Food and beverages are available pre show and intermission in the lobby. Please note the bar closes once the performance is in progress. Food and any outside containers are not permitted in the theatre with the exception of clear plastic water bottles. During designated performances only will all beverages be permitted in the theatre. In consideration of other patrons, please refrain from opening candy or gum wrappers during a performance.

The Oakville Centre does have some accessibility challenges due to its design and age. The theatre does not have an elevator. The theatre’s seating area of 17 rows has a steep incline. There is one barrier free washroom on the main level in the lobby. Due to fire regulations and for the safety of patrons, wheelchair and walker seating is located in Row S.

Latecomers and re-entries will be seated at a suitable break determined by the production. You may be asked to wait in the lobby.

The Oakville Centre offers a Sennheiser assistive hearing system, free of charge. Patrons can access the headset by requesting the equipment at the lobby bar on their arrival.

Babes-in-arms and young children are welcome to the Family Series performances. Contact the box office for all other performances. Each person entering the theatre requires a ticket.

Two accessible parking spots are available on Navy Street and two spots in the Church Street parking lot. These spots are best suited for those attending performances in the Main Auditorium. Accessible parking spots on the lower level, at the back of the theatre would only be suitable for those attending an event in the Studio Theatre. For additional accessible parking spots, please refer to the map on page 4.

Group bookings are available for 10 or more. Please contact 905-338-4161, ext. 3204. All ticket sales are final. The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts is a division of the Recreation and Culture Department of the Town of Oakville. It’s All Abou The ACURA OF OAK V

PERCY JACKSON AND THE LIGHTNING THIEF Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 1 p.m. & 3:30 p.m. • $20* Recommended for ages 6 and up Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school – again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’ master lightning bolt has been stolen and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy has 10 days to find and return Zeus’ stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

THE CAT IN THE HAT Friday, February 19, 2016 at 7 p.m.• $20* Recommended for ages 2 to 9 Based on the book by Dr. Seuss. Adapted and originally directed by Katie Mitchell. Presented by Childsplay, Tempe, Arizona.

VITALY – AN EVENING OF WONDERS Thursday, December 31, 2015 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.• $20* Recommended for ages 8 and up A Magician like no other…Vancouver magician and illusionist, Vitaly Beckman, is widely renowned for his dazzling talents. His personal goal is to “restore jaw-dropping wonder to our jaded generation by making the impossible possible.” Each and every illusion is his original creation. From bringing paintings to life to making your driver’s license photo disappear, his illusions defy belief as you will see at An Evening of Wonders. 10

From the moment his tall, red-and-white-striped hat appears at their door, Sally and her brother know that the Cat in the Hat is the most mischievous cat they will ever meet. Suddenly, the rainy afternoon is transformed by the Cat and his antics. Will their house ever be the same? Can the kids clean up before mom comes home? With some tricks (and a fish) and Thing Two and Thing One, with the Cat in the Hat, the fun’s never done! Founded in 1977, Childsplay is an internationally respected professional theatre company whose chosen audience is children. Their mission is “To create theatre so strikingly original in form, content or both that it instills in young people an enduring awe, love and respect for the medium, thus preserving imagination and wonder, those hallmarks of childhood that are the keys to the future.” Play originally produced by the National Theatre of Great Britain. Chinwagn Classic Albums Live Series

HELP!

The Beatles • Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 8 p.m. After the rip roaring success of Hard Day’s Night, some peoples’ personal favorite Beatles’ record, the quartet decided they had to top it with the ultimate pop album, and they did! Help! is one of the best albums in the entire collection of the Beatles’ discography and it does so with great songs, a fun structure, and even a movie to promote it! The gang John, Paul, Ringo, and George were running on all cylinders when they made this one and it is one of the last albums before their big foray into folk and eventually psycho rock. Like a Hard Day’s Night, this album starts out with Help!, the title track from the album. It is one of the best songs that the band ever wrote, and certainly one of the most recognizable as it’s been in countless movies (like Cheaper By the Dozen most recently). After that comes (Hey) You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away, another one of the great Beatles waltzes. It shows a slightly folkish influence that would be later explored in the next album, entitled Rubber Soul, a lot of peoples’ personal favorite album by the Beatles... After that comes the great Ticket to Ride which I’m sure everyone in the world has heard before. Then Act Naturally is a funny Ringo song which are always the pleasure. Before the hit ballad (and most covered song of all time, Yesterday) we get one of my personal favorite Beatles’ songs, I’ve Just Seen a Face. It has such a nice flow and pretty sound it’s greatly hard to resist most of the time. Overall this is one of the best Beatles’ albums barnone, and definitely the best out of the Beatles poppy phase before delving into darker more sinister and drug induced rock. But for now the Beatle’s don’t need any Help! at all. ~ www.spudnikmusic.com Regular Ticket: $65 | Big Ticket Member: $58 | Big Ticket Plus: $54 All prices include taxes and handling fees. Box Office: 905-815-2021 or OakvilleCentre.ca

Jake’s Gift Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 8 p.m. A Pay-What-You-Can Performance

Jake’s Gift is a multi-award winning Canadian play about a World War II veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy, France, for the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. While revisiting the shores of Juno beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10-year-old from the local village. Isabelle’s inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts – most notably the war-time death of his eldest brother, Chester, a once promising young musician. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave. Since 2007, Jake’s Gift has gone on to play at festivals and theatres in over 200 communities across Canada, as well as international visits to Washington State, the UK and most recently, Normandy, France, for the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. Now in their eighth year of touring, Juno Productions and Jake’s Gift continue to garner awards and rave reviews whether playing in small rural towns or big city centres.

Julia Mackey Playwright and performer Julia Mackey was born in Birmingham, England. Her family moved to Canada when she was three years old. She grew up in Montreal, and received an education degree from McGill University before heading out west in 1993 to pursue a career in Theatre. In 1994, she started writing and performing her own work with the innovative Victoria based company, Theatre SKAM. In June 2004, Julia travelled to Normandy, France, for the 60th Anniversary of DDay. She attended many ceremonies, walked the coastline and interviewed dozens of veterans who had returned for the occasion. The experiences of the veterans, her own discoveries, and a life-long interest in Remembrance Day, led to the development of the play in August of 2006 at the Sunset Theatre in Wells, BC. In August 2012, Julia received a a Betty Mitchell Calgary Theatre Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Drama. Jake’s Gift was also nominated for Outstanding Production. When not touring with Jake, Julia splits her time between Vancouver, BC and the historic community of Wells in the Cariboo District of BC.

Lawrence Hill -The Illegal Monday, October 5, 2015 at 7 p.m. come alive through vivid storytelling and unforgettable characters,” says Iris Tupholme, Hill’s long-time editor and publisher. “In The Illegal, he tells the story of a young marathon runner, Keita Ali, fleeing for his life from a repressive government and forced into hiding. This is the ‘new underground,’ a hidden society made up of people who are denied the basics of life because they don’t have the necessary paperwork to make them full citizens. This new novel by Lawrence Hill is a significant contribution to our understanding of the fate that plagues millions of undocumented migrants to developed nations.” “It is truly an honour and privilege to present Lawrence’s new novel to Canadian booksellers,” says Leo MacDonald, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, of HarperCollinsCanada. “With close to one million copies of his books in print, fans have been eagerly awaiting a new novel from Lawrence.” Lawrence Hill will be doing an extensive cross-country tour this fall to meet the fans that have been so supportive throughout his writing career.

The author of nine previous works of fiction and non-fiction, Lawrence Hill became a household name with the 2007 publication of The Book of Negroes. Upon publication, it was met with critical acclaim and was soon awarded the prestigious Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Overall Best Book. The Book of Negroes then went on to win Canada Reads and has been published around the world. Most recently, it was adapted as a six-part miniseries that aired on CBC Television in January 2015. Lawrence Hill says, “I have been thinking about the lives of undocumented refugees since meeting Sudanese expatriates in West Berlin in the 1980s. In Canada, the United States and around the world, millions of people have to survive with a huge question mark over their lives. Will they be deported? Persecuted? Executed? What do their lives look like while they are hiding in rich nations and trying, against all odds, to get on with their lives? These questions became my obsession and the inspiration for The Illegal.” “Lawrence’s great strength as a novelist is to make important contemporary issues

Oakville Centre Comedy Series

Howie Mandel

Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 8 p.m. • MATURE LANGUAGE & CONTENT Howie Mandel has remained a constant force in show business for over 30 years. He is also executive producer of many shows with his production company, Alevy Productions, one of which is the TBS series Deal With It, a hidden camera ambush show where unsuspecting members of the public are secretly dared to pull a prank on their unwitting companions with absolutely no time to prepare. He also serves as one of the judges on NBC’s hit talent competition series America’s Got Talent alongside Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howard Stern. Previously, Howie received an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Host For A Reality or Reality-Competition Program” for Deal or No Deal and a Daytime Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Game Show Host” for the syndicated version of the show. Howie’s versatile career has encompassed virtually all aspects of the entertainment spectrum, including television, film and stage. From his work on the EmmyAward winning St. Elsewhere to the international animated children’s series Bobby’s World, Howie has become a mainstay of the American comedy scene. In 2009, Howie added another title to his resume, author, when he released his frank, funny, noholds-barred memoir Here’s the Deal: Don’t Touch Me. The memoir that revealed his ongoing struggle with OCD and ADHD – and how it has shaped his life and career – made the New York Times Bestseller list on its first week and remained on the list for sev-

eral consecutive weeks. Howie started his career on a dare in Toronto in 1979 and then one night during a trip to Los Angeles he was at the legendary Comedy Store on amateur night and was coaxed by his friends to get up and try his luck. As fate would have it, there was a producer in the crowd who immediately hired him to appear on the comedy game-show Make Me Laugh. His appearance on the show led to talk show appearances, a stint as Diana Ross’ opening act and eventually to the television series St. Elsewhere, where Howie spent six seasons as “Dr. Wayne Fiscus” on the award-winning NBC drama. Howie’s Emmy Award-nominated animated children series Bobby’s World ran eight seasons on FOX and now appears in syndication six days a week in 65 countries. As the series’ creator and executive producer, Howie was closely involved in its writing, as well as providing the voice of Bobby, Bobby’s dad and other characters. Howie attributes the show’s success to drawing the story lines from real life. Howie has done countless comedy specials both on cable and network television. He has also hosted his own syndicated talk show, The Howie Mandel Show, and continues to be a mainstay on the talk-show circuit. Howie also continues to perform as many as 200 concerts a year throughout the US and Canada. Howie lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Terry, and their three children.

DANNY MICHEL

&

JEREMY FISHER

Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 8 p.m. With nominations for three JUNOs, the Polaris Prize, The CBC Heart Of Gold award and a pile of albums under his belt, DANNY MICHEL is unquestionably one of Canada’s finest songwriters. His thoughtful lyrics and earnest performances have earned him a devoted fan base. A musical chameleon, he is able to slip into many genres with ease. An adventurous and fearless artist. A master at striking the right balance between unpredictability and meeting expectations, leaving you wanting more as soon as it’s over. In 2011 he relocated to Belize. There he founded the Danny Michel Ocean Academy Fund to help raise scholarships for a small non-profit community high school. To date he's raised over $70,000 for the school and volunteers there when he can. Later he tracked down one of his favorite bands; The Garifuna Collective, a unique Afro-Amerindian cultural group and convinced them they should make an album together. That album, Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me, was quoted as “One of the finest musical works of our time” by Billboard’s Larry Leblanc. The album landed him a third JUNO nomination (this time in the world music category) and a sold out summer tour of North America with The Garifuna Collective as his band. Past critics have praised Danny’s lyrics for having “something to say" without coming off preachy. Topics range from the environment Feather, Fur & Fin to big questions If Gods’ on your side, then who's on mine. Others ask Who’s gonna miss you when you’re gone? a song which explores karma asking Did you live it right?/did you live it wrong?. At the moment Danny is sitting in front of a blank canvas contemplating where his next album is going to take him. It could go anywhere from here. Knowing Danny, wherever it goes – it will be an adventure.

Don’t let the title fool you. There isn’t a single sour note on The Lemon Squeeze, the latest from beloved Canadian singer‐ songwriter JEREMY FISHER. After developing a devoted fan base through five folk-influenced releases, Jeremy boldly ventures in a new direction with The Lemon Squeeze. This is clear from the opening track, I Love You...So; a tight pop tune owing more to Ben Folds than to any folk artist. The decision to make a pure pop record was solidified after a discussion with producers Gus Van Go and Werner F. “When we first sat down, we batted around the idea of a pop record that would stay true to my typical, acoustic guitar-driven solo show. But when I started to write, the songs just weren’t coming on guitar. I reached out to Gus for some encouragement, and we started chatting about albums that we were both into.” Enter Randy Newman’s seminal 1972 album, Sail Away – “Newman’s quiet masterpiece” according to Rolling Stone Magazine. I told Gus that I had always wanted to record a piano-based album and he persuaded me to follow through on that. I started practicing piano in a very deliberate and disciplined manner. The joy and novelty of spending time on a different instrument made space for new music in my brain, and I ran with it.” “I would set up my recording equipment every day and lay down ideas. If a lyric wasn’t coming to me, or I felt like I was meeting some resistance, I would take a break and throw on a record in the kitchen.” The end result was everything from Randy Newman-inspired piano ballads with strings, to Queen-esque guitar licks, to Billy Joel-styled pop. “I grew up with albums and I feel driven to make albums as an artist. The way we listen to music is changing though and as much as I tried to create a cohesive body of work, The Lemon Squeeze plays like an album of singles. It was liberating to make every song on the record unique.”

Dan Cooper Concert Series

Heritage Blues Orchestra Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 8 p.m. Witness a live performance by the Heritage Blues Orchestra or listen to their Grammy-nominated debut album, And Still I Rise, and even as old African-American musical traditions rise up to meet you, you’ll recognize this group as something breathtakingly new. How can something so firmly rooted in the past still seem so adventurous...even audacious? You’ll sense it when their driving Chicago backbeat suddenly gives way to a stark, a cappella work song by Bill Sims, Jr. You’ll feel it when their bold, brass-fueled New Orleans stomp sets up a stunning solo vocal by Chaney Sims. And you’ll know it when Junior Mack’s heaven-sent voice and searing slide guitar storm in to lead the gospel-blues charge. On top of the prodigious instrumental prowess and talents of three incredible singers in Bill, Junior and Chaney, the strength of the Heritage Blues Orchestra comes from rich experience and the simple refusal to segregate the elements of the AfricanAmerican musical canvas. The band members’ collective history in blues, jazz, R&B and gospel – and the passion, pride, talent and musical wanderlust that consumes Bill and Junior and so thoroughly inflames Chaney – make the Heritage Blues Orchestra the most exciting African-American roots group to come along in a very long time. Even as you sense just how heavily steeped Bill and Junior are in tradition, you’ll marvel at how boldly they, together with firebrand Chaney, march into the musical land of the new and the yet to be classified. Bill and Junior bring decades of depth to the Heritage Blues Orchestra; Bill’s blues and Junior’s blues and gospel have lit the path for a whole new generation of young players and singers in New York City. One such prized pupil: Bill’s daughter Chaney, who holds her history as a descendant of slaves and Georgia sharecroppers close to her heart and pours powerful emotion into everything from work songs and spirituals to soul, blues and R&B. Propelled by the churning rhythms of Kenny Smith’s drums and Vincent Bucher’s locomotive harmonica and colored by the Ellington-inspired (by way of Ravel) horn arrangements of Bruno Wilhelm, this group takes us on a ride through the dusty back roads of the American South – painted with unexpected colours of modern jazz arising from the radio. This group drives us down Hwy. 49 from Clarksdale to New Orleans, fueled by the spirits of the blues and carrying us to new musical horizons. What begins as a loving celebration of the past emerges as a whole new adventure in music. This is the exhilarating and exciting sound of the Heritage Blues Orchestra.

LARRY CORYELL has been described by Whitney Balliett as “the most innovative and original guitarist since Charlie Christian.” Beginning with his first recordings with Chico Hamilton and his tenure with the Gary Burton Quartet, Larry has remained in the pantheon of great jazz guitarists for more than forty years. His personal philosophy of music has kept his playing fresh and exciting and makes each of his personal appearances or recordings a special event. The late 60s and early 70s saw Larry as one of the most in-demand guitarists, not only in jazz but in all musical genres. It was during this time that Larry released a series of critically acclaimed albums for Vanguard, did some rock experimentation with Steve Marcus, toured with British musicians Jack Bruce and Mitch Mitchell and appeared on the first album by the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra Association. There were sessions with Jimmy Webb, The Fifth Dimension, Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin and Miroslav Vitous. The albums produced at this time show Larry Coryell to be a profound musical prophet, merging jazz, rock, free-form improvisations and Eastern modes and scales in a way that was new at the time and still communicates power and emotion years later. In 1974, Larry formed The 11th House, one of the most popular fusion bands of its time. The band, comprising Coryell, Randy Brecker, Alphonse Mouzon, Mike Mandel and Danny Trifan, demolished the barriers between jazz and rock and came up with a sound that merged the best elements of both – the raw emotional power of rock with the more structured ideas of jazz. All of Larry’s work, both singly and collectively, highlights Larry’s uncanny ability to revisit jazz standards and imbue them with the new life and ideas. He brings to them his years of experience in playing, listening and learning and synthesizes them into something greater than the sum of their parts. Larry Coryell deserves a special place in the history books.

DIEGO FIGUEIREDO is considered one of the most talented guitar players in the world today. He is the winner of several important competitions including the Montreux Jazz Competition and the VISA Prize. His music is a fusion between Jazz, Bossa Nova and Classical. Diego’s unique interpretations, along with his phenomenal technique and emotion, has created an explosion of adoring fans. Diego has performed in over forty countries around the world. Diego was born in Franca, Brazil in 1980. At the age of four he used to strike poses carrying his small guitar. At six, he received a mandolin, which was kept in a very special place in his house. Diego played many instruments before choosing the electric guitar when he was twelve. By the age of fifteen, he was playing theaters and nightclubs throughout Brazil, playing both solo and with many renowned Brazilian musicians. For a number of years he played in several different groups including Banda Gênese and Squema Seis from Brasília. He has studied classical guitar, Brazilian popular music and jazz in several different conservatories including Franca, Ribeirão Preto, Tatuí, and Berklee College of Music. Most recently he accompanied the singer and songwriter Belchior in tours around Brazil and abroad, as well as with the French phenom Cyrille Aimée. He has played and shared the stage with Hermeto Pascoal, Larry Coryell, Geraldo Azevedo, Sebastião Tapajós, Demônios da Garoa, Vanusa, Renato Borghetti, Osvaldo Montenegro, Jair Rodrigues, Elomar, Toquinho, Tunai, Paulinho da Viola, Nando Cordel, Moraes Moreira, Fafá de Belém, Amelinha, Los Hermanos, Zeca Baleiro, Miyazawa and others. Besides being a guitar player, Diego is a producer, arranger, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist and has recently produced and arranged the double album As várias caras de Drummond for which Belchior wrote the music for Drummond’s poems, and was released in CARAS magazine.

The Studio Sessions Series

Saturday, October 31 at 8 p.m. in The Studio Theatre Fortunate Ones is a Canadian pop-folk duo made up of singer/guitarist Andrew James O’Brien and singer/pianist/accordion player Catherine Allan – endearing audiences with wide-eyed energy, pragmatic optimism, and an earnest mission for connection. Andrew and Catherine grew up on opposite sides of the island of Newfoundland – Mount Pearl and Corner Brook respectively. It was in St. John’s where the pair met and began to sing together. One night in 2010, Andrew heard Catherine sing harmony with her brother at a private gathering in downtown St John’s. He had to sing with her. The next day he got up the nerve, left her a note, she acquiesced, and within 48 hours they were singing together on stage. While it was a road from that evening to the formation of Fortunate Ones in 2013, their beginnings are in keeping with one of the core messages they carry. That sometimes the most important decision you can make is to just say YES. From a musical family, the Allan home was a constant eclectic flow of instruments, singing and the stereo. Catherine studied classical piano, taught herself guitar in secret, and discovered the accordion by chance when her brother brought one home over Christmas in 2011. Musical exploration was the norm. After moving to St. John’s, Catherine’s induction to the East Coast music scene was rapid - performing with Andrew, recording and touring extensively with JUNO award-winning songwriter Amelia Curran, and appearing at festivals

with Curran and East Coast songwriter Don Brownrigg. Andrew James O’Brien launched his music career with a well-received solo album Songs for Searchers (2011) – nominated for Best Pop Recording at the 2012 East Coast Music Awards. He toured heavily in Canada and the UK, opening for artists such as Sharon Shannon and Paul Brady. Catherine accompanied him. It was on a UK tour that they realized the direction their collaboration was taking. The appreciation shown by UK audiences bolstered the pair’s sense of purpose. Their music began to evolve to represent both of their sensibilities, skills and sounds. “We put a name on something that was naturally occurring, and then we took steps to follow it up. We would share equal duties vocally, musically, and conversing with the audience. It wasn’t Andrew James O’Brien with Catherine Allan anymore - it was already Fortunate Ones.” Plain and simple, they consider themselves fortunate to pursue their dreams. Their name reflects shared experience with audiences. It is about connecting people of all kinds, to make strangers friends, to elicit feelings of joy, hope, sadness, and contemplation – and the spirit that we are all in this together. Produced by multi-ECMA winner Daniel Ledwell, The Bliss was recorded at Lake Echo in Nova Scotia during the winter of 2014. The album features guest appearances by East Coast favorites Jenn Grant, Don Brownrigg, and Kinley Dowling.

This hilarious, record-breaking Canadian musical (created by George Reinblatt, Frank Cipolla, Melissa Morris and Christopher Bond) tells the outrageous story of five college friends spending the weekend in an abandoned cabin in the woods after accidentally unleashing an evil force that turns them all into demons. The original production, based on the Evil Dead film franchise, opened 11 years ago in Toronto and enjoyed an immensely popular run, with 150 productions eventually presented in cities around the world with sold-out houses and rave reviews from critics. “Evil Dead - The Musical is the most fun you can have at the theatre. It’s a show everyone loves – even if you don’t love musicals,” said Corey Ross, president of Starvox Entertainment. “Since being called ‘the next Rocky Horror Show’ by The New York Times, the show is primed to tour, so all can enjoy the evil fun.” Those familiar with Evil Dead - The Musical will remember that audience members sitting in the designated “Splatter Zone” get covered in fake blood as the production incorporates some fun ‘real-life’ effects during certain scenes. Chinwagn Classic Albums Live Series

CRIME OF THE CENTURY Supertramp • Friday, November 6 at 8 p.m.

Supertramp came into their own on their third album, 1974’s Crime of the Century, as their lineup gelled but, more importantly, so did their sound. The group still betrayed a heavy Pink Floyd influence, particularly in its expansive art rock arrangements graced by saxophones, but Supertramp isn’t nearly as spooky as Floyd – they’re snarky collegiate elitists, an art rock variation on Steely Dan or perhaps a less difficult 10cc, filled with cutting jokes and allusions, best heard on Bloody Well Right. This streak would later flourish on Breakfast in America, but it’s present enough to give them their own character. Also present is a slight sentimental streak and a heavy fondness for pop, heard on Dreamer, a soaring piece of art pop that became their first big hit. That and Bloody Well Right are the concise pop moments on the record; the rest of Crime of the Century is atmospheric like Dark Side of the Moon, but with a lighter feel and a Beatles bent. The Studio Sessions Series

The Devin Cuddy Band Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 7 p.m. & 9:30 p.m. in The Studio Theatre A lanky young man sits at a battered piano in a dark, cramped club. His hair falls in large sweaty tussles over his eyes. As he kicks his band into the immortal Mystery Train, he tosses back those curls while cocking his head toward the crowd, Jerry Lee Lewis-style. The setting could indeed be Memphis or New Orleans in 1959, but this is Toronto in 2013 where a new generation has picked up rock and roll’s torch. Not in any kind of fashion sense, mind you, but in a spiritual sense, chasing the rhythm with pure heart and soul. Devin Cuddy has always made music his way, and some might argue, the hard way. As the son of one of Canada’s most beloved singer/songwriters, Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy, country rock has been the soundtrack to Devin’s entire life – he was born the same week Blue Rodeo began recording its 1987 debut album, Outskirts. But from the moment Devin was drawn to playing music, he was determined to get as close as possible to the sources of all the sounds he loved, whether they were made by rock and roll’s founding fathers, the Grand Ole Opry’s honky tonk heroes, or Jelly Roll Morton and the kings of jazz. Mastering those styles was only taking things halfway, though. The most important lesson Devin learned from his dad was that the way a musician truly develops their craft is in front of audiences. From his home base at the Cameron House, the Queen Street West club that has long been the epicenter of Toronto’s roots rock scene, Cuddy has done just that on almost a nightly basis. At the same time, he has helped cultivate a growing contingent of likeminded young musicians to slowly but consistently spread the word coast to coast. After a significant period of writing original songs and honing them with a dynamic band featuring guitarist Nichol Robertson – Canada’s answer to every Nashville god of twang – Zack Sutton on Drums, and Devon Richardson on Bass. Devin and company recorded Volume

One in 2012 with engineer Tim Vesely, formerly of the Rheostatics. Rough-hewn and lively, the album reflects Cuddy’s musical dexterity, and unique lyrical approach. Songs such as She Ain’t Crying Over Me, I Got A Girl, and Signal Hill are examples of Cuddy’s timeless approach, while on songs like Afghanistan and My Son’s A Queer, he shows no fear in tackling contemporary issues. The two worlds probably blend most seamlessly on Sidewalk In The South, a personal account of hanging out in Oxford, Mississippi, which pays musical homage to the New Orleans standard St. James Infirmary. The track is further proof that while Cuddy is as no-nonsense a performer as they come, he is by no means a traditionalist. “I came upon those influences as a teenager, just from picking through my father’s CD collection and going out from there to related artists,” Devin said in a 2012 CBC interview. “Then in college I found something about country music that I probably still can’t really describe, but that really calls to me and affects me. I think it’s probably the storytelling and the simplicity, yet deeper meanings.” No one can accuse Cuddy of not paying his dues over the past several years, and while his father has taken great pride in Devin’s accomplishments, he has also shown tremendous respect in keeping a safe distance away. However, Devin took the next step in pursuing the large audience he deserves, and earned the honour of being the special guest on Blue Rodeo’s 2014 cross-Canada tour. Not only did Devin perform an opening set, he also played after-show club gigs in almost every city, showcasing his barrelhouse style in its natural environment. “Even as I carve my own path, there are some things I can’t say no to,” Cuddy says, “specifically doing things with Blue Rodeo. Not only is that a great opportunity for me, but it’s family and it means a lot to me and my father as well. I’ve come to embrace that for sure. “

Dan Cooper Concert Series

STEVE HACKETT North American Tour 2015 Monday, November 30 and Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 8 p.m. with Blues with a Feeling, whilst continuing to challenge his own ‘horizons’ with an amazingly eclectic mix of sounds, genres and a sense of the exotic that excites his many followers to this day. Recent albums have possessed a high level of sophistication, along with an ever-present powerful dynamic, from the dramatic and atmospheric darkness of Darktown and Wild Orchids to the colourful voyage through time and space of To Watch the Storms. 2009’s Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth, written and recorded in the midst of domestic and professional upheaval, was released to an overwhelmingly positive response from fans and reviewers alike, many of them proclaiming it his best ever. Hot on the heels of OOTTM was Beyond the Shrouded Horizon released in 2011, which easily received an equally enthusiastic response. In 2012, Steve collaborated with Chris Squire of Yes on the "Squackett" album A Life Within a Day. Steve’s live electric gigs take his fans on an extraordinary journey drawn from a rich musical heritage. Perennial Genesis favourites such as the mighty Firth Of Fifth sit alongside solo classics, while more recent material, with much of Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth and Beyond the Shrouded Horizon now included, demonstrate that Steve is an artist still at the very top of his game. Supported by some of the best musicians on the planet, Steve’s unique guitar work remains the fulcrum on which this challenging and exhilarating show is balanced. Genesis’ induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in March 2010 stands as a testament to the enduring qualities of their music. Steve has always held a torch for the classic Genesis music. His Genesis Revisited II, a double CD, involves several iconic artists and contains many Genesis favourites.

Steve Hackett is renowned as an immensely talented and innovative rock musician. He was lead guitarist with Genesis as part of their classic line up with Gabriel, Collins, Banks and Rutherford, that produced acclaimed albums such as Selling England by the Pound (a favourite of John Lennon). With Steve’s extraordinary versatility in both his electric guitar playing and his composing, he involves influences from many genres, including Jazz, World Music and Blues. He is equally adept in his classical albums that include renditions of pieces by composers from Bach to Satie, his own acoustic guitar compositions that have gained the admiration of many, including Yehudi Menuhin, and ambitious guitar/ orchestra albums such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic. With Genesis, Steve’s guitar playing produced some of the most memorable moments, from the sensitivity of his acoustic sound on Horizons and Blood on the Rooftops to the dramatic rock guitar solos of Firth of Fifth and Fountain of Salmacis. As he embarked on his solo career he developed his exceptional range, pushing musical boundaries into exciting areas, inventing new sounds and also techniques such as ‘tapping’. His solo career went from strength to strength and the mid-eighties not only saw the hit single Cell 151, but also the Steve Hackett and Steve Howe super group GTR. After GTR, Steve worked further with many renowned musicians such as Paul Carrick, Bonnie Tyler, John Wetton and Brian May, who has credited Steve as an early influence. Steve went on to produce his hit album Genesis Revisited. He went even further back to his roots

Dan Cooper Concert Series

Lindi Ortega Friday, December 11, 2015 at 8 p.m. intention of taking up permanent residency in Faded Gloryville. It was a pitstop. She took what she needed, saw the sights, hung with the locals, and hightailed it out of there, hitting the road to capture its essence in three very different recording sessions. The first two were with producers familiar to her work, Dave Cobb who was behind the boards for Tin Star, and fellow Canadian castaway Colin Linden, who helped her realize her vision for 2012’s Polaris Prize nominated Cigarettes & Truckstops. The results of those, Lindi says, should be pleasing to those many fans who’ve discovered her over the years, fallen hard for her own unique take on the torch and twang of her country influences such as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn that has taken her around the world to enthusiastic audiences everywhere. The final session, though, was one that took her in a somewhat different direction, towards a more Muscle Shoals sound utilized by those that came before her such as Solomon Burke, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke – artists she expresses an affinity and fondness for. Helping her navigate the new terrain were John Paul White from The Civil Wars and Ben Tanner from the Alabama Shakes, who coproduced in their studio in the deep south what Lindi describes as three of the album’s more “soulful tunes.” “I feel like country music, itself, is all encompassing. There are different facets of it,” Lindi explains.“And I love all of it, and I’ve always wanted to explore all sounds countrywise. I’ve explored bluegrass, I’ve explored outlaw country, I’ve explored classic country. And now I’m exploring this vibe. Maybe it isn’t necessarily country but it’s connected to the south. So I feel that it makes sense. I always look at it like in order to get to Paradise you have to travel through Faded Gloryville.

There’s a sign on the outskirts of town. A buzzard sits atop it. The grass brown and parched below. It’s dusty, faded, chipped at the edges, graffiti filling the empty white spaces, a bullet hole or two visible in the large, black letters that read: Welcome to Faded Gloryville. Leave your dreams behind. In the eyes and imagination of acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Lindi Ortega it’s a place we’ve all been, we’re all familiar with or will one day know all to well. Some visit. Some stay. Some escape. Some leave only to return again. And for Lindi, it was also the source of inspiration — in title and in spirit — for her stunning new collection of country-kissed songs that make up her fourth full-length release. It is an album that is filled with the sights and sounds and souls of those who’ve found themselves in Faded Gloryville, brought to its saloons, flophouses and cheap motels by drink, by debt, by vanity, heartbreak, failure, fear or misfortune. Her first glimpse of the place, oddly enough, was in another artistic vision, that of the Jeff Bridges film Crazy Heart, which depicts a fellow musician exiled in a similar metaphorical town, down-and-out, drunk and debasing himself and his talents for those who could care less. “I had a moment where I thought, ‘Could this be me? Could I wind up like this?’ ” says Lindi. “That was a very honest question to myself.” That fact, the idea that she would question that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to those familiar with the subject matter of her past work, specifically 2013’s Juno Awardnominated Tin Star, considering much of it was powered by Lindi’s experiences as a young, struggling artist in the equally as fabled and dream-dashing place of Nashville, where she now makes her home. Just as it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to those familiar with her incredible gifts that the feisty, fiery and fierce force of nature had no

Oakville Centre World Artists Series

Jesse Cook – One World! Friday, December 18 at 8 p.m. and just start pushing buttons and making things happen in the recording program I use. At first I was terrified he would mess things up. But he actually got really good at poking around. I started going, ‘Wow, what’s that? What are you doing? Let me in there!’ I started writing tunes using weird loops and metallic and electronic sounds. And I found myself interested in taking what I do and putting it in a more modern context. I’ve leaned heavily on ancient instruments. But for this record, I put those instruments side by side with modern sounds – unabashedly so.” What results is the most sonically diverse and distinctive disc in Cook’s vast and varied catalogue, which has earned 11 Juno nominations and one win for 2000’s Free Fall. On these 11 instrumentals, programmed beats and dusty electronic textures are interwoven with syncopated handclaps, deep dubby basslines and popping percussion. Sitars and violin share the space with synthesizers and sound effects. Notes and rhythms dance playfully back and forth between speakers. Naturally, Cook’s masterful guitar work commands centre stage with its elegant balance of subtlety, in-the-moment honesty and blazing technical prowess. But here, it also pivots between worlds – past and future, familiar and fresh, acoustic and electronic – redefined by technology like every element of modern life. “We’re all involved with our computers in a big way, though we malign them,” laughs Cook. “People complain social media is ruining communication and that people just text instead of call. But love and romance and imagination and art also happen through computers. People fall in love online. People talk to loved ones on Skype. People write great love letters on the computer, create great works of art, great compositions. It has become this integral part of human expression and I wanted to give it a voice in what I was doing.” And in doing so, the artist who hadn’t planned to travel for this album found himself in the most exotic locale imaginable. “I wanted to make what I was doing feel like Constantinople, the ancient city that existed between the East and the West. It was the meeting point of all these great cultures – Africa, Europe, Asia, India. I want my music to be that place: The Constantinople of sound. A place where ancient sounds meet with modern ones and pass though that port.” The journey continues.

For Jesse Cook, music has been a journey. Sonically and literally. “Over the years, I’ve taken my music and tried to crosspollinate it with music from different parts of the world,” explains the 50-year-old global-guitar virtuoso. “For the (2003) album Nomad, I went to Cairo and recorded with musicians there. On my (2009) record The Rumba Foundation, I went to Colombia, and worked with musicians from Cuba as well. On (1998’s) Vertigo, I went down to Lafayette, and recorded with Buckwheat Zydeco. For me, the question has always been: Where did you go? Where did you take your guitar?” The short answer this time? Nowhere. And everywhere. After two decades of criss-crossing the world in restless pursuit of inspiration, innovation and collaboration, the Paris-born, Toronto-raised Cook changed course for his ninth studio album One World. Instead of exotic locales, he stayed home in his studio. Instead of a foreign legion of performers, he relied on his own devices. And instead of exploring cul de sacs of music – flamenco, classical, rumba, world beat, pop, blues or jazz – he united them. “On this record, it’s not really about going someplace,” he says of the album, whose cover depicts a vast, ancient tree. “The idea is that there really is just one world. If you pull your focus back far enough, you start to see all music as being branches of the same tree. They’re all connected to the same trunk from way back. “For example, my strange way of playing guitar is a hybrid of styles. I was a classical guitarist as a kid, and I studied flamenco and then I studied jazz. So there are three musical and guitar traditions in my background. And one of the forms I use, rumba flamenco, is itself a hybrid created in the 1800s when sailors were coming back to Spain from Cuba, having heard these Cuban rhythms. And here I am, 150 years later, taking it and mixing it back with modern music and seeing where it takes me. Music is a constantly evolving thing.” As is Cook’s creative approach. Despite its humble home-made origins, One World begins another chapter in the multi-tasking artist, composer and producer’s quest. His destination: The digital realm. To create the disc’s emotive melodies, fluid grooves and rich sonic tapestries, he incorporated technology more than ever before. Give credit to his precocious young assistant. “I have two small children, and my son is forever trying to get on my computer. If I’m in my studio, he’ll come in and sit down

Chinwagn Classic Albums Live Series

A VERY LENNON CHRISTMAS John Lennon & The Beatles • Saturday, December 19 at 8 p.m. So much has been said and written about The Beatles – and their story is so mythic in its sweep – that it’s difficult to summarize their career without restating clichés that have already been digested by tens of millions of rock fans. To start with the obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century. Moreover, they were among the few artists of any discipline that were simultaneously the best at what they did and the most popular at what they did. Relentlessly imaginative and experimental, The Beatles grabbed a hold of the international mass consciousness in 1964 and never let go for the next six years, always staying ahead of the pack in terms of creativity but never losing their ability to communicate their increasingly sophisticated ideas to a mass audience. Their supremacy as rock icons remains A VERY unchallenged to this day, decades after LENNON their breakup in 1970. CHRISTMAS Out of all The Beatles, John Lennon had the most interesting – and frustrating – solo career. Lennon was capable of inspired, brutally honest confessional songwriting and melodic songcraft; he also had a tendency to rest on his laurels, churning out straight-ahead rock & roll without much care. But the extremes, both in his music and his life, were what made him fascinating. Where Paul McCartney was content to be a rock star, Lennon dabbled in everything from revolutionary politics to the television talk-show circuit during the early ‘70s. After releasing a pair of acclaimed albums, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, in the early ‘70s, Lennon sunk into an infamous “lost weekend” where his musical output was decidedly uneven and his public behavior was often embarrassing. Halfway through the decade, he sobered up and retired from performing to become a house-husband and father. In 1980, he launched a comeback with his wife Yoko Ono, releasing the duet album Double Fantasy that fall. Just as his career was on an upswing, Lennon was tragically assassinated outside of his New York apartment building in December of 1980. He left behind an enormous legacy, not only as a musician, but as a writer, actor and activist.
