ACCESSIBILITY
The Oakville Centre is a shared experience for everyone to enjoy.
The Oakville Centre and the Town of Oakville place a high priority on accessibility to the public. We are constantly striving to meet the needs of our customers.
The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts encourages a scent-free environment. Please be considerate of those in the audience who have allergies and/or multiple chemical sensitivities and refrain from wearing cologne, perfume or other scented products.
Patrons requiring wheelchair or accessible seating arrangements are asked to call the box office at 905-815-2021 or email boxoffice@oakville.ca. Our box office staff will be happy to book accessible seating and answer any questions you may have regarding accessibility at the Oakville Centre.
Cell phones and other electronic devices should be muted and not used while in the theatre. Photography and recording devices are strictly prohibited inside the auditorium.
The Oakville Centre does have some accessibility challenges due to its design and age. The main auditorium of 17 rows has a steep incline and due to fire regulations and for the safety of all patrons, wheelchair and walker seating is located in Row S. The theatre does not have an elevator.
Food and beverages are available pre show and intermission in the lobby. Please note the bar closes once the performance is in progress. Food and any outside containers are not permitted in the theatre with the exception of clear plastic water bottles. During designated performances only will all beverages be permitted in the theatre. In consideration of other patrons, please refrain from opening candy or gum wrappers during a performance.
There is one barrier free washroom on the main level in the lobby and one on the lower level for studio patrons. Accessible features include curb cuts at the crosswalk and a ramp to the entrance of the theatre on Navy and Church street approach. Our main entrance doors are equipped with electronic openers and the auditorium offers handrails.
Latecomers and re-entries will be seated at a suitable break determined by the production. You may be asked to wait in the lobby. Babes-in-arms and young children are welcome to the Family Series performances. Contact the box office for all other performances. Each person entering the theatre requires a ticket.
The Oakville Centre offers a Sennheiser assistive hearing system, free of charge. Patrons can access the headset by requesting the equipment at the lobby bar on their arrival.
Group bookings are available for 10 or more. Please contact us at 905-338-4161, ext. 3204. All ticket sales are final.
Two accessible parking spots are available on Navy Street and two spots in the Church Street parking lot. These spots are best suited for those attending performances in the Main Auditorium. Accessible parking spots on the lower level, at the back of the theatre would only be suitable for those attending an event in the Studio Theatre. For additional accessible parking spots, please refer to the map on page 5.
All performances take place in either the Willson Auditorium or the Studio Theatre. The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts is a division of the Recreation and Culture Department of the Town of Oakville.

With special guest JENNY O • Sunday, September 25, 2016 at 8 p.m. with The Housemartins. Then in January 1987 they made a now seminal appearance on the Channel 4 pop programme The Tube, performing Letter From America and Throw The ‘R’ Away. Singing in regional accents about Scotland - its emigration and its politics - they were a far cry from the mid-Eighties playlist staples of Rick Astley and Sinitta, and became a phenomenon almost overnight, signing to Chrysalis within a month and recording their debut album acoustically, This Is The Story, a week later, produced by the man who also signed them to Chrysalis, John Williams. Voted NME Readers Best New Band that year, they toured the UK extensively and a new ‘band’ version of Letter From America, produced by Gerry Rafferty went Top 3 in November. Strikingly individual, twin brothers Craig and Charlie Reid have over the years enjoyed huge success across the globe as the emotional honesty, political fire, wit and sing-along raucousness of their songs and their extensive touring has enlightened and entertained fans new and old. The Proclaimers have carved out a niche for themselves in the netherworld where pop, folk, new wave and punk collide. In the process they have enjoyed Gold and Platinum singles and albums in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. In addition, The Proclaimers are no strangers to film and live theatre success. Following up from the hit musical drama Sunshine On Leith (featuring songs by The Proclaimers), the movie version had its UK release in October 2013 and was hugely popular, opening at number 3, moving up to 2 in its second week, and spending another month in the top ten while generating over £4.8 million at the UK box office. Sunshine On Leith was number 5 in the highest grossing Independent UK films of 2013.
Apart from a handful of acoustic dates, this is the first tour in Canada since 2013. Craig and Charlie Reid said, “We are absolutely delighted to be coming back to North America, bringing the band, and we look forward to seeing lots of old friends again and meeting new ones.” Since releasing their widely acclaimed 10th studio album Let’s Hear It For The Dogs in April 2015, The Proclaimers embarked on a mammoth 68 UK date tour which involved 15 festivals (including Wychwood, Glastonbury, T In The Park, Cambridge, Carfest, Belladrum, and V Festivals) and 53 sold out theatres. Ents 24, the UK’s biggest live guide, announced The Proclaimers as the 6th biggest live music act in the UK in 2015. 2016 sees The Proclaimers kicking off another seven-month tour with shows in Hong Kong in April as part of the HK Rugby Sevens tournament, followed by a 10 date April tour of Australia and New Zealand including their first ever concert at Sydney’s Opera House. Shows have also been confirmed in Dubai and Doha. This past summer saw more UK and European festival appearances, including a 28 date England & Wales Seaside & Regional Tour. After their September and October tour of USA and Canada, Craig and Charlie will come off the road to focus on writing and recording with a view to being back out live in 2018. Born in Leith in 1962, Craig and Charlie Reid grew up in Edinburgh, Cornwall and Auchtermuchty in Fife. At home, they listened to early rock 'n' roll and country greats such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams. At school they played in punk bands and formed The Proclaimers in 1983. With a fervent live following growing in Scotland, particularly in Inverness where they performed regularly, their first big break came late in 1986 when they were invited to tour

STRAWBS Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 8 p.m. As Strawbs celebrate four decades of music making, it is still difficult to categorize the unique sound that has made them Britain’s most successful international progressive folk-rock band. David Cousins, who leads the group, has been described by the influential All Music Guide as: “the most talented Dylan influenced songwriter to come out of England”. Strawbs are often mentioned in the same breath as progressive rock bands like Yes, King Crimson, and the Moody Blues. It is well documented that Rick Wakeman left Strawbs to join Yes but returned to appear at Strawbs 40th Anniversary Celebration. However, beyond progressive rock, Strawbs have another key component in their in their complex and intricate songs, in that they emerged out of the British Folk movement of the mid-1960s. The band started life as the Strawberry Hill Boys playing bluegrass, before moving into the mainstream by making the first Strawbs album with Sandy Denny in 1967, a year before she recorded her first album with Fairport Convention. The recording with Sandy attracted the attention of A&M Records in Los Angeles who signed Strawbs as the first British band on the label! Strawbs has a devoted fan base that continues to grow on the strength of albums like Grave New World, Bursting At The Seams, Hero And Heroine, and Ghosts, and classic songs such as Lay Down, A Glimpse Of Heaven, and Benedictus. Acoustic Strawbs comprise David Cousins, along with lead guitarist Dave Lambert, and the astonishingly versatile Chas Cronk, who together formed the front-line of the classic 1970’s line-up of Strawbs which had a remarkable seven consecutive albums in the Billboard Top 200 in the USA. JWJONES with SAMANTHA MARTIN & DELTA SUGAR Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 8 p.m. and whiskey-soaked in the extreme, Martin’s pipes are capable of conveying an infinite range of emotions, bringing one to tears in one instance and in the next uplifting one’s soul with an empowered declaration of hope, faith and desire. As a vocalist her roots lie squarely within the wellspring of powerful, strong woman’s voices embodied by such forbears as Marion Williams, Mavis Staples, Etta James, Tina Turner, Bettye LaVette, Lucinda Williams and, perhaps most closely, Bonnie Bramlett. As a songwriter, she draws on black gospel and southern soul with a hint of roots country and sixties pop while her lyrics suggest an old soul with wisdom beyond her years. Following the success of her EP Mississippi Sun, Martin toured Canada in venues and festivals as well as touring in Germany. Upon returning home to Toronto, Martin performed at Massey Hall for the Toronto Blues Society’s Women’s Blues Revue and was invited to open for The Blind Boys of Alabama at Roy Thompson Hall. Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar released the debut album Send The Nightingale to glowing reviews by both fans and critics alike. In this new gospel-infused, blues and soul formation known as Delta Sugar, Martin is set to keep raising the bar for herself and her audiences.
JW JONES JUNO Award Nominee, Canadian singer/guitarist JW Jones tours constantly, and is known for his high-energy show that keeps getting hotter! “JW Jones is a red hot young Canadian guitar slinger/ singer“, says Grammy-winning producer Tom Hambridge. The Globe and Mail, referred to this Maple Blues Award winner as “one of this country’s top blues guitar stars.” Billboard called JW part of “a new wave of young talent moving onto Canada’s blues stage.” JW was born in Ottawa, Ontario and started playing drums at 13, at that time into Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and classic rock. A few years later, after witnessing a B.B. King performance, he fell in love with the blues and decided to take up the guitar. Soon he was absorbing the influences of artists such as Albert King, Freddie King, T-Bone Walker, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Jimmie Vaughan, and later, West Coast guitarists Junior Watson and Little Charlie Baty.
“This is an amazing blues band”~ Dan Aykroyd Jones has released eight albums, performed in nineteen countries and four continents, and averages over one hundred shows per year. In early 2015, the legendary Buddy Guy performed with Jones in Chicago, then invited JW to trade riffs with him on two sold-out Canadian dates. American magazine Blues Revue stated that “Jones’ style is a fluid amalgam of T-Bone Walker’s big, bright chords, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson’s slashing leads, and Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown’s jazzy sting.”
“You may not know it yet, but Samantha Martin is a rock star, she’ll tear your heart out one note at a time.” ~ Serena Ryder While Martin is a powerhouse unto herself, Send the Nightingale is not the work of a single talent. In combination with what she likes to term her “covocalists” (as opposed to “backup vocalists”), Sherie Marshall and Stacie Tabb, the vocal blend Delta Sugar produces is pure, unadulterated neuron-tingling magic where the sum is even richer than the already soulmelting parts. Add to that, guitarist Mikey McCallum’s Delta-inspired and mystery-inflected guitar lines.
SAMANTHA MARTIN AND DELTA SUGAR Bubbling up from the cauldron of roots Americana music, Samantha Martin is an artist of extraordinary power, gravitas and deep-seated emotion. On first listen, one is immediately struck by the awesome presence and sheer magnitude of her other worldly voice. Cigarette-ravaged

A nine-piece string ensemble, collectif9 presents classical music with rock-style charisma, combining boldness and the highest of musical standards with amplification and lighting. Bringing classical music to pop-culture audiences in diverse spaces, the group encourages interaction, facilitating dialogue with their listeners. In their show Volksmobiles, collectif9 delivers an uncompromising selection of short pieces, often folk-inspired. From Gagnon to Golijov, passing though Brahms and Schnittke, the repertoire of the group is integral to its identity. Between bursts of energy and dreamlike states, many of the presented pieces are original arrangements, and have rarely been played on the same program.
The result? The music of collectif9 reveals the unexpected. Founded in Montréal in 2011, collectif9 already has a track record of dozens of concerts including large-scale performances at Club Soda, Rialto Theatre, and at Ottawa Chamberfest. In 2012, collectif9 introduced an innovative project of short videos, called LIVEshorts, broadcast over the internet at www.collectif9.ca – each live, unedited performance is produced in a unique setting. During the 2015-2016 season, collectif9 released their debut album Volksmobiles. Performances will bring the group across Ontario, New Brunswick, and China, and include an extensive tour throughout Quebec with the support of the Entrées en scène Loto-Québec program.
“The string nonet collectif 9 offers its public something truly as valuable as it is rare: classical repertoire “revisited with passion and fearlessness”. They are a group of very young and fiercely talented string players.”~ Andrew Crust, bachtrach.com

PETER KATZ Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 8:30 p.m. “If you want to make something that’s like nothing you’ve made before, then you have to shake yourself up, go beyond what’s comfortable and known and let yourself feel disoriented, overwhelmed, even intimidated. Those moments, when you lose your bearings, when you’re forced to sink or swim, are the moments when you have an opportunity to rise to the occasion, to surprise yourself, to do the things you didn’t know you could do. That’s what making this album was for me, I’m so proud of the process, and I’m so proud of the result.” The result is We Are The Reckoning, a striking new collection of 11 original songs from JUNO nominated and Canadian Screen Award nominated singer-songwriter and recently crowned Best Male Vocalist in the popular NOW Magazine Best-Of-Toronto reader’s poll Peter Katz. After three successful national and international tours in support of his 2012 release Still Mind Still, Peter spent the better part of the past two years writing well over 50 new songs while collaborating on some of them with an impressive list of co-writers in Los Angeles, London, and at home in Toronto (a new approach for Peter who had always typically written alone). His hard work paid off when he attracted the attention of co-producers Royal Wood (multiple Juno Award Nominee) and Bill Lefler (Ingrid Michaelson, Cary Brothers), who signed on to help him turn those songs into Peter’s most sonically-rich album to date. Over the past decade, Peter has seen his albums debut at #1 on the iTunes singersongwriter charts; he’s shared the stage and studio with the likes of Academy Award winner Glen Hansard, Juno Award winners The Good Lovelies, Polaris Prize nominated Melissa McCelland (Whitehorse) and the legendary Garth Hudson from The Band. He’s toured all over the world, regularly playing to capacity crowds, and has managed to build an impressive fan base of loyal listeners. Never content to sit still for long, Peter Katz has his eyes firmly set on the future. “I’m in a different place than I was when I started 10 years ago. I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into and I maybe didn’t always put my focus in the right place. Now I know what this thing is, I know the relentlessness that’s required, I know it’s not a race, and I know that the music has to come first. I feel like I finally did that with this record. I took my time. I shook myself up, threw myself into unfamiliar territory and took some big risks. Now that I’m on the other side of it, I can see why it was the right thing to do, and I’m more excited than ever to share what we made.” Regular Ticket: $44 | Big Ticket Member: $37 | Big Ticket Plus: $33 All prices include taxes and handling fees. Burton Cummings Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 8 p.m. Few artists have achieved the level of public success and critical acclaim that Burton Cummings has enjoyed in a dazzling career spanning more than forty years. These Eyes, Laughing, No Time, American Woman, Share The Land, Hang On To Your Life, Albert Flasher, Sour Suite, Orly, Glamour Boy, Star Baby, Clap For The Wolfman, Dancin’ Fool, Stand Tall, I’m Scared, My Own Way To Rock, I Will Play a Rhapsody, Timeless Love, Break It To Them Gently, Dream Of A Child, Fine State of Affairs, Love Dreams and You Saved My Soul all bear Burton’s distinctive stamp. His voice has been rated among the finest in rock music. With the Guess Who he earned the first US platinum album by a Canadian artist, and on his own the first quadruple platinum Canadian-produced album. ourselves. It was this spontaneous feeling of, ‘These songs are rad, let’s put them out.’” “We’re sort of in a new spot and we’re redefining how we work creatively and as a band,” says Monks. “And with this EP we’re exploring that, and what it’s like to be different places and to work together as adults and with a time limit, and how that makes things more exciting, and lighter, or more stressful. It brought a new energy and there was a creative time limit to it; we’re more firing it off and trying to capture lightning in a bottle. The band has stayed so flexible and elastic that it keeps going; it’s evolved. But if people hear Not My Girl and feel like they were meeting an old friend again – like it was taking them back a decade – that would make me happy.” If Tokyo Police Club’s past is represented here, then it must be said that their present and future selves are as well. In these songs is the familiar, upbeat charm and wry, earnest likeability that endeared them to fans a decade ago, but with a tighter sense of rhythm, changes, and tempo, as well as an updated subject matter. The bookends of Not My Girl and Please Don’t Let Me Down usher the feverish TPC sound in and out, leaving the listener breathless and, naturally, wanting more. Ever present is the band’s good-natured sense of humor, perhaps nowhere more clearly than in the EP’s title itself. But it’s more than just a pun or an overt nod to a formative album; it’s a reminder that Tokyo Police Club’s moment – their vitality, their radness – extends far beyond the now. So dawn goes down to day; long live the radness.
“Nothing gold can stay, but radness is forever.” So say Tokyo Police Club, who are set to release their first batch of new music since the enterprising and vaulting 2014 LP Forcefield. Now ten years on from their 2006 debut EP, the Toronto four-piece are looking back to the energy and spirit of that formative era while keeping an eye on the future. And with the two-part and self-released Melon Collie and the Infinite Radness EP’s being let loose on both ends of 2016, lead singer/bass player and principal songwriter Dave Monks, drummer Greg Alsop, keyboardist/guitarist Graham Wright, and guitarist Josh Hook have harnessed that primal and instinctual joy to make Tokyo Police Club’s tightest, brightest, and certainly raddest batch of songs to date. When you start a band as a group of teenage best friends in your small Canadian hometown, it’s hard to imagine that a decade later you will not only still be together and making music but also touring the world, playing shows to legions of fans, and putting out a steady stream of acclaimed albums. As the years have worn on, Tokyo Police Club continue to defy the odds, having pushed themselves and their art to the limit. Having completed their grandest statement in the form of their fourth and most time-intensive album to date, the boys took a little time away from each other. Monks moved to New York City and put out a solo record, while Alsop returned west to Los Angeles, Wright bunkered down in Toronto to work on a film, and Hook settled in rural Ontario on a patch of land. Enjoying their time apart to recover, experiment, explore, and evolve as people and not just as a band, the foursome reunited for the lengthy Forcefield tour, and during a brief break in the cycle at the end of 2014 they took what Monks refers to as a “New York vacation” together to record two new songs he had written earlier in the year. “We knew we didn’t want to work like we did on Forcefield, which was two-and-a-half years solidly writing and rehearsing while holed up in a studio in Toronto,” says Alsop. “And we all live in different places now, so that week in New York was our first attempt at experimenting with what happens if we all fly in to be in the same place and decide to work on music together.” Says Monks, it was "more just capturing the moment and being

DIVERSION & FEARFUL SYMMETRIES A pay-what-you-can performance Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 8 p.m.
Diversion Choreography by Robert Glumbek • Ontario premiere – November 2016 Diversion is an explosive, high-energy work, embodying ProArteDanza’s motto, “passion in performance”. Diversions examines various departures we experience in life, both the expected and the unexpected; the inevitable and the undesired. The work also explores subjects of loss, isolation, and the imposed psychological journey that is the outcome of unexpected departures. Described by reviewers as “a mix of grace, awkwardness, and explosive power” (Georgia Straight) and “a visceral, sometimes somber and haunting performance” (Mark Waugh, blogger and dance critic) Diversion, choreographed by ProArteDanza Artistic Associate, Robert Glumbek, challenges and compels audiences with raw power and emotional subtlety. Set to a driving electronic score by Marconi Union, Diversion is contemporary ballet at its best.
Fearful Symmetries Choreography by Roberto Campanella • World premiere – November 2016 Using the music of the same name by John Adams, Campanella will place his own experience as an immigrant to Canada in juxtaposition with the current generation of young artists influenced by urban aesthetics and pop culture. According to Adams, the music is structured to give the impression of continuous movement over a shifting landscape. Says Campanella, “This is a springboard metaphor for my investigation into the urban aesthetics and cultural adaptation of our increasingly hectic and eclectic society.”
About ProArteDanza Since 2004, ProArteDanza has been dazzling Canadian audiences with their signature full-throttle physicality and emotionally resonant performances. ProArteDanza was founded by two of Canada`s most respected independent choreographers, Artistic Director, Roberto Campanella and Artistic Associate Robert Glumbek, with the commitment to breaking down the barriers between ballet and modern dance and showcasing the brightest talents from both worlds through work that is truly contemporary and of our time. With this unique fusion, ProArteDanza presents compelling dance works that embody the motto Passion in Performance and cross boundaries of technical skill and artistic expression. THE LAST WALTZ The Band • Friday, November 4, 2016 at 8 p.m. from the same cloth as this, but Robertson realized that the group wasn’t doing themselves any good by staying on the road – and the accompanying Martin Scorsese-directed film does suggest that the Band was indulging themselves way too much – and that it was the perfect time to draw the curtain on the Band with a lavish concert that turned their entire career into a burnished myth, nearly as ancient
“The road was our school. It gave us a sense of survival; it taught us everything we know and out of respect, we don’t want to drive it into the ground...or maybe it’s just superstition but the road has taken a lot of the great ones. It’s a goddam impossible way of life.” ~ Robbie Robertson Perhaps Robbie Robertson’s greatest gift is how he can spin a myth, making the mundane into majestic fables. Outside of his songs, his greatest achievement in myth-making was The Last Waltz, where he doesn’t necessarily overstate the amount of time the Band spent on the road, but he sure tried to make it all seem like something special, both in amount of time and what they accomplished. And while he was right on the latter – the Band did change the course of music, leaving behind records that still sound gloriously rich and out of time – the former is a bit of a stretch since not only were the rest of the Band not exactly ready to stop touring (they would later reunite without him), it ignores the basic fact that touring is what working musicians do. They make music, they play for audiences, they keep rolling throughout the years, and many of the artists invited to participate in the Band’s farewell concert – Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, Neil Young, the Staple Singers, Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton, and Bob Dylan, who legendarily launched a never ending tour in the ‘80s – lived the life of a working musician, performing live well past 50. The Band was cut
and romantic as photographs from the Civil War. Hence, The Last Waltz, a farewell concert on Thanksgiving 1976, turned into a timeless documentary by Scorsese and released as a triple-album set in 1978. Many people call this the greatest rock movie and greatest live performance of all time. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

Tia Brazda’s brand new album Bandshell debuted at #1 on the iTunes Jazz Chart and #3 on the Nielsen Soundscan Chart in Canada. It was also ranked #5 by Jazz FM 91.1 in Toronto on their list of the Top 10 Canadian jazz albums of 2015. The album features some of Canada’s jazz greats, including Marc Rogers on bass, Chris Gale on saxophone, William Sperandei on trumpet, William Carn on trombone, Mark McLean on drums, as well as Miranda Mulholland (Great Lake Swimmers) on fiddle. The album demonstrates Tia’s growth as a performer and songwriter, showcasing a more sophisticated sound while still featuring the saucy dance numbers her fans have come to expect. After touring both Canada and the U.S. in support, the album hit #24 on the CMJ national radio chart in the U.S. after being added to over 30 stations nationwide. Tia’s first EP Cabin Fever burst onto the scene in 2012, hitting #1 on the iTunes Canada Jazz Chart as well as receiving play on BBC and CBC Radio, Jazz FM 91.1 and college radio stations across Canada. CHARLOTTE GRAY Monday, November 21, 2016 at 7 p.m. Join Canadian author Charlotte Gray, when she talks about her new book The Promise of Canada, 150 Years – People and Ideas That Have Shaped Our Country. What does it mean to be a Canadian? What great ideas have changed our country? An award-winning writer casts her eye over 150 years of Canadian history. “Our country owes its success not to some imagined tribal singularity but to the fact that, although its thirty-five million citizens do not look, speak or pray alike, we have learned to share this land and for the most part live in neighbourly sympathy.”~ Charlotte Gray, from the Preface of The Promise of Canada. On the eve of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations comes a richly rewarding new book from acclaimed historian Charlotte Gray about what it means to be Canadian. Readers already know Gray as an award-winning biographer, a writer who has brilliantly captured significant individuals and dramatic moments in our history. Now, in The Promise of Canada, she weaves together masterful portraits of nine influential Canadians, creating a unique history of the country over the past 150 years. What do these people – from George-Étienne Cartier and Emily Carr to Tommy Douglas, Margaret Atwood, and Elijah Harper – have in common? Each, according to Charlotte Gray, has left an indelible mark on our country. Deliberately avoiding a “top down” approach to our history, Gray has chosen people whose ideas have caught her imagination, ideas that over time have become part of our collective conversation. She also highlights many other Canadians, past and present, who have added to the ongoing debate over how we see ourselves, arguing that Canada has constantly reimagined itself in every generation since 1867. Beautifully illustrated with evocative black and white images and colourful artistic visions of our country, The Promise of Canada is a fresh take on our history that offers fascinating insights into how we have matured and yet how – 150 years after Confederation and beyond – we are still a people in progress. Charlotte Gray makes history come alive as she opens doors into our past, our present and our future, inspiring and challenging readers to envision the Canada they want to live in.

GARBAGE! THE REVOLUTION STARTS AT HOME Thursday, November 22, 2016 at 8 p.m. Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home is a feature documentary about how the family household has become one of the most ferocious environmental predators of our time. Concerned for the future of his son, writer and director Andrew Nisker takes an average urban family, the McDonalds, and asks them to keep every scrap of garbage that they create for three months. He then takes them on a journey to find out where it all goes and what it’s doing to the world. From organic waste to the stuff they flush down the potty, the plastic bags they use to the water they drink out of bottles, the air pollution they create when transporting the kids around, to using lights at Christmas, the McDonalds discover that for every action there is a reaction that affects them and the entire planet. Everyday life under a microscope has never been so revealing. By the end of this trashy odyssey, you are truly inspired to revolutionize your lifestyle for the sake of future generations.

Since the age of 7, Quinn has been sharing stages with legendary players like Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Los Lobos, Joe Bonamassa, and B.B. King at iconic venues like the Hollywood Bowl, Madison Square Garden, and Red Rocks. He has also performed at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals including Montreux Jazz, Austin City Limits, Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival and the Mahindra Blues Festival in Mumbai, India. It all began with a toy guitar. When Quinn was three years old, his parents gave it to him for Christmas after noticing his natural affinity for music. Pretty soon Quinn was on his way, taking lessons and performing with local musicians. It quickly became apparent he had a gift and there has been no stopping him ever since.

BEST OF THE BEATLES they began wearing their outfits in a more slovenly style. One night, Charlie Watts unexpectedly doffed his waistcoat in a Fenland dressing room; eventually Keith Richards’ jacket grew so bespotted with chocolate pudding and whiskey stains that it was no longer wearable. Onstage, the whole group started moving more, and Jagger took to
The Beatles and the Rolling Stones represent two sides of one of the twentieth century’s greatest aesthetic debates. In this excerpt from his book Beatles vs. Stones, John McMillian describes how the Stones shaped their image in response to what the Beatles had done. In order to share in the type of the success the Beatles were having, (Rolling Stones manager Andrew) Oldham insisted that the Stones make some image and personnel adjustments. On the theory that six members was at least one too many for a successful group, Oldham made them kick out pianist Ian Stewart - who anyhow had too square a jaw for Andrew’s liking. Keith Richards was bizarrely instructed to drop the “s” from his last name; Keith Richard, Andrew said, “looked more pop.” Meanwhile, he added a “g” to the band’s name, making them the Rolling Stones; otherwise, he said, no one would take them seriously. Twentysix-year-old Bill Wyman was told to begin pretending he was twenty-one. But most significantly, Oldham persuaded the band to loosen up its performance. Though Jones still postured himself as the group’s leader, Andrew recognized Jagger’s electric appeal, and insisted that he share in the limelight. Capturing the birth of Beatlemania Fifty years ago, as the Beatles led a British invasion of America, photographer Harry Benson caught it all on film The idea to style the Stones as the anti-Beatles, though – to toughen up their image, and encourage them to act as surly and defiant as the dared – came a bit later, and in fact that was the opposite of what Oldham originally had in mind. Instead, one of his first moves was to buy them a set of matching outfits. Wyman remembers a day when Oldham “marched us up to Carnaby Street to put us in suits, tabbed-down shirts and knitted ties.” On other occasions the band could be seen in tight black jeans, black turtlenecks, and Beatle boots. When the Stones debuted on national television, on Thank Your Lucky Stars, they were conscripted into hound’s-tooth jackets, high-buttoned shirts and slim ties, looking every bit as dainty and amiable as the pop bands they despised. Bill Wyman: “It’s obvious to me now that ... Andrew was attempting to make us look like the Beatles. From his association with them he was well aware of the power of marketing, and he was initially slotting us as their natural successors rather than as counterparts.” The following month, though, when the Stones embarked on their first national tour (sharing a spectacular bill with Bo Diddley, Little Richard and the Everly Brothers),

chewing gum as he sang. Offstage, a journalist observed, they appeared in “a jumbled assortment of jeans, silk cardigans, camel jackets and sloppy sweaters. None of the slick suits sported by Bill J. Kramer of Gerry and the Pacemakers.” When the Stones appeared on a BBC program in October 1963, they frustrated their interviewer by greeting many of his questions with simple “yeah’s” and “no’s.” But rather than hurting their popularity, all of this seemed to boost their appeal!

AND THE STONES Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at 8 p.m. Their audiences were becoming more demonstrative, more raucous, to the point where the Stones, just as soon as they finished their sets, were forced to flee their venues through the back door and speed off as quickly as possible to avoid getting mobbed. Without ever devising or articulating a formula for instigating a cultural revolt, the
“The Beatles were accepted and acceptable,” he added, “they were the benchmark and had set the level of competition.” By contrast, “The Stones came to be portrayed as dangerous, dirty and degenerate, and I encouraged my charges to be as nasty as they wished to be.” He “made sure we were as vile as possible,” Mick acknowledged. “Andrew pitched it so we were very much the antithesis of the Beatles.” Of course, the Stones proved masterful at projecting arrogant, sour attitudes. Surely Jagger was deploying his best Cockney-put on when he told an interviewer, circa 1964: “If people don’t like us, well that’s too bad. We’re not thinking of changing, thanks very much. We’ve been the way were are for much too long to think of kowtowing to fanciful folk who think we should start tarting ourselves up with mohair suits and short haircuts.” But Jagger was lying. It had only been a short while earlier that the Stones, eager for exposure, appeared on Thank Your Lucky Stars with acceptable hair and matching suits. If the Beatles “sold-out” by changing their image in order to improve their chances of becoming successful, so too did the Stones - only they went through two early transformations. First, they costumed themselves in matching suits and ties, just like any Liverpool pop group; then, within a few months, they began experimenting with a different approach of their own design - dressing sloppily, accentuating their sexuality, and behaving obnoxiously. This was an image that suited them perfectly. Though not quite “gentlemen” in the first place, they became rather convincing as thugs. John McMillian, an assistant history professor at Georgia State University, studies Twentieth Century social movements. He is especially interested in New Left and youth culture radicalism during the 1960s. Author of Smoking Typewriters: The Sixties Underground Press and The Rise of Alternative Media in America, he is also founding co-editor of The Sixties: A Journal of History, Politics and Culture. John has co-edited several scholarly anthologies, and contributed short essays and book reviews to the Washington Post, The Nation, The Chronicle of Higher Education, the New York Observer, the Boston Globe and elsewhere.
Rolling Stones began to stumble upon one. Put another way, though widely held, the idea that Andrew Oldham conjured up a belligerent attitude for the Stones, ab ovo, is a myth. First, he tried to smarten them up. But Oldham was quick - very quick - to see the potential in this new approach. By the time the Beatles conquered America on the Ed Sullivan Show, on Feb. 9, 1964, Oldham was actively promoting the Stones as “the band your parents loved to hate.”

Susan Aglukark is one of Canada’s most unique and most honored artists. An Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut, Susan has released her latest recording, a Christmas album titled Dreaming of Home. Produced by Chad Irschick, Dreaming of Home is a collection of uplifting contemporary seasonal favourites, a combination of traditional and contemporary music, sung in English and her mother tongue Inuktitut. Susan has re-recorded some Christmas traditional songs like Silent Night and has also re-done one of her personal favourites Old Toy Trains. “The selection of songs on this new album was inspired by the realization that for many of us Christmas is often celebrated away from home, away from loved ones, and coming to the place in our lives where home is where the heart is, we can make where ever we are, home”. Please join Susan and her band for an evening of Christmas music.
