SOCK PUPPET

What’s particularily fun about sock puppets is that you can be creative! Be sure to have an adult help you. You’ll need at least one clean sock, a large needle and some strong, thick thread. Of course you can add any other decorating items you want to use to embellish and decorate your sock puppet, like glasses, jewelry, assorted buttons and beads, wool, pipe cleaners, felt material, as well as all the rest of the items required to make your puppet like scissors and a glue gun or white glue.

Glue, or sew the googly eye or eyes, either to the bottom of the sock, at the toe end, or pretty much wherever you’d like. Once the glue is dry, stick your hand in. Form your hand into the shape of a mouth, with your thumb below your fingers. If you want to add a tongue, you can either use a smaller oval in a different colour or use an actual tongue shape that hangs out. You can also make a nose using felt. Cut a small triangle or circle to form a cute little nose. Sew or glue it into place.

Find an old, clean sock. Any colour you like, and it should be long enough for you to stick your arm in. Preferably the sock should almost reach the elbow. Of course, the type of character the sock puppet has is, in part, determined by the sock chosen. For example, spotted socks suggest creating a leopard, or a dog. While striped socks suggest creating zebra or tigers. Plain socks could be a wide range of things but the colour can help, so a white sock could be a white mouse, while a gray sock might be an elephant. Let your imagination roar!

Also, if you’d like this sock puppet to have whiskers, cut whisker length pieces of string or cord. Sew or glue into place at the top centre of the mouth. The same string can be used for hair. Wow, this is fun! Does it have ears? These could easily be cut out of felt and sewn or glued on wherever you want them . Express yourself, add on the extras! Your puppet could have everything – eyelashes, hoop earrings, bow ties, hair ribbons, pigtails, a ponytail...It’s really all up to you! You can even dress it up.

Crafty Magic Tube trick In this trick, you get to make a special wand and WOW the crowd with magic! You may need some help from an adult. Remember, a magician never reveals their secrets. Here’s what you'll need to get started Two sheets of construction paper - standard 8.5" by 11" is fine Clear adhesive tape and some scissors Small objects to produce such as ribbons or silk handkerchiefs Here’s how it works Roll one sheet of paper into a cylinder and tape it together. Roll the second sheet of paper into something of a cone and tape it together as well. One end of the cone should be approximately the same diameter of the cylinder while the other end should be slightly smaller. Insert the cone into the cylinder and trim off the extra edges of the cone that stick out. From the outside, you’ll have something that looks like a normal cylinder that’s made of paper. Decorate your magic tube with stickers, markers and other cool stuff. Here’s the Secret: When your audience looks down one end of the tube, the one with the smaller end of the cone, they see what looks like a normal cylinder. The opening at the back of the cylinder is actually smaller than it should be - the perspective is slightly off - but your spectators won’t notice! From your side, when you look down the cylinder, you'll see a small, secret compartment where you can hide things and pull objects out of. Before performing the trick, load some objects into the secret compartment. For example; some coloured ribbons. To perform the trick, show the closed end of the tube to your audience and let them see that you have an empty tube. If you like, you can hold the tube up to your eye just as you would a telescope and allow the audience to see your eye and the “empty” tube. After showing the tube is “empty”, discreetly start to pull out the ribbons to the spectator’s surprise. IT’S MAGIC!

wild kraTTs–live!

By Martin and Chris Kratt • Canada • Sunday, January 4 at 1 p.m. & 4 p.m. Recommended for ages 4 to 8 Wild Kratts – Live! is an all new theatrical stage show based on the hit animated television series Wild Kratts. Martin and Chris Kratt, stars of the Emmy-nominated Wild Kratts, step out live on stage to engage the audience in a classic Wild Kratts story. Starting off in their headquarters the Tortuga, the Wild Kratts receive a message of an animal in trouble from a member of their worldwide network of Wild Kratts kids. Always ready to help animals that need them, Martin and Chris pull on their Creature Power vest and gloves and are off “to the Creature Rescue”! With help from Aviva, inventor and friend of the Kratts, the brothers activate their Creature Power Suits and take on some of their fans favourite Creature Powers – such as Rhino powers and Orangutan Powers! Now with amazing animal abilities they are off to confront the bumbling and comical villain, Zach and his robots. Of course the Kratt Brothers technology doesn’t always work as planned, which results in hilarious pratfalls and slapstick fun. But the brothers press on, encountering some amazing “Wow Facts” about animals presented via large screen multimedia video footage, as they rescue their animal friend and return it to its natural home to “live free and in the wild”. Experience, live-on-stage, the astounding “creature” fundamentals, and the infectious excitement and inspiring quest of the Kratt Brothers that make the hit television series Wild Kratts so popular with kids and their families.

About Wild Kratts – The PBS KIDS TV Series Wild Kratts features the brothers on incredible expeditions to meet wild creatures from the far corners of the earth. Diving into the habitats of these unusual animals with the use of futuristic technology and Creature Power Suits that allow the brothers to take their funny and exciting adventures to where they’ve never gone before. The basic plot of the series is usually to save the animals from various situations, be it villains, general human influence, or confusion on a baby animal’s part. Many episodes utilize interaction with “villain” characters to exemplify an animal situation, other episodes focus on real world problems, either directly (as seen in Stuck On Sharks where Gourmand captured a shark for making shark fin soup) or indirectly through allegory (Build It Beaver had the beaver’s dam destroyed repeatedly through various means; an allegory for deforestation). For some episodes, the objective is to change the way a creature is often perceived; creatures such as bats and crocodiles that are usually considered frightening are presented in their own habitat and their true nature is explored. Along the way, viewers learn about the animals and their lives, as the Kratt brothers and the Wild Kratts gang (including the Kratts, Aviva, Koki, and Jimmy) figure out ways to either right wrongs or to get out of the strange (and always amusing) situations they find themselves in.

Regular ticket: $35 (Family Series discount is not available for Wild Kratts-Live!) All prices include taxes and handling fees. Box Office: 905-815-2021 or www.OakvilleCentre.ca

“Our recent show with the Kratt Brothers was exceptional. Chris and Martin Kratt are energetic, engaging, and generous performers. Their love of the animal kingdom is palpable; the kids had a great time being scarlet macaws, howler monkeys, and giant otters with them. Every child with whom they made contact got their full attention, and there were many.” ~ ALLAN SANSOM, Artistic Producer & Manager, Centrepointe Theatres, Ottawa, ON

Today The Foundation is able to grant annually to charities over $2 million.

The Foundation is a conduit between the passions of philanthropic families and the needs of the community. As a registered charity, The Foundation is one of the largest members of a national network of over 190 Canadian community foundations. They support individuals, families and corporations who come from all walks of life, economic backgrounds and charitable interests that have one thing in common – a desire to make a difference today and leave a legacy tomorrow for Oakville. Vital Grants is just one example of the ways in which The Foundation can and does work together to achieve greater and more sustainable solutions. We all care about our homes, our communities, the places we have lived, played, worked, and raised a family and many of us want to find a way to give back to these places. The Foundation has been making it possible to give back to the community now, and leave a legacy for the future since 1994.

CELEBRATING SOMETHING SPECIAL IN THE FOUNDATION'S 20TH YEAR!

To start The Foundation’s 20th year, they celebrated with the launch of two new initiatives that are aptly tied to a connection with Canada’s Governor General David Johnston, patron of the National Community Foundation movement. He challenged all community foundations, as we approach our country’s 150th birthday in 2017, to imagine our country as it could be – a “smart and caring nation” that holds promise for everyPARTNER WITH THE OAKVILLE one. KERR STREET MINISTRIES Providing help for the present and hope for the future More than thirty five youth visit the KSM after-school youth drop-in program each day, with many of the same students attending Club 31, a homework club for kids in grades 6-12.

Kerr Street Ministries (KSM) has been an essential part of the Oakville community for many years. It all began when a small group of people from a local church decided they needed to respond to the needs of their neighbours. Every day there are parents struggling to provide for their children. They wonder, where will I get food for dinner? Will I be able to pay the rent next month? If I find a job, who will look after my children? Where are my kids going after school, and what are they doing?

Partnerships with local organizations, such as Arthouse, ROCK, Elizabeth Fry Society, Rolling Horse and the Sanctuary enables KSM to provide additional opportunities and alternatives for children that can help them achieve a better, brighter future. It is the generosity, love, and compassion of the community that makes it possible for KSM to effect positive change in our community.

Today KSM is a gathering place for the community. It is a place where people come to serve and be served. It is a place where staff, volunteers and partner organizations work together to provide programs and services that are needed. And it is a place where adults and children will find help for the present and hope for the future. Kerr Street Ministries understands the struggle of poverty and remains committed to caring for families and developing youth. More than 350 families depend on the food supplies from KSM's food bank each month. More than 400 meals are served each week.

Please consider joining with KSM, and caring for your community, by becoming a monthly donor. Together we will make a difference! Call Kerr Street Ministries at 905.845.7485 or donate online at www.kerrstreet.com

Junie B.Jones By Theatreworks USA • USA • Wednesday, May 6 at 7 p.m. Recommended for ages 7+ Watch out world, here comes Junie B. Jones, and she’s definitely ready for some new school-year adventures. Follow her escapades in this rollicking, one-of-a-kind musical adventure based on Barbara Park’s wildly popular books. Theatreworks USA’s musical is based on several books about Junie B.’s first grade experiences, specifically, Junie B., First Grader (at last!), Junie B., Boss of Lunch, and Junie B., One-Man Band. The connective tissue tying these stories together is a fourth book, Top-Secret Personal Beeswax: A Journal by Junie B. (and Me!), which features diary entries by Junie, which are designed to give children ideas for their own writings. complains about no cookies in first grade, Mrs. Gutzman offers her an assistant position, folding napkins and welcoming the other school children to the lunchroom. But when Junie B. smells lunch and loudly announces her distaste for the smell of tuna noodle casserole, the entire class foregoes their meal, and is angry at Junie B. Mrs. Gutzman arrives at Junie B.’s class that afternoon, and asks for her help in distributing cookies, and her class forgives her.

TOP-SECRET PERSONAL BEESWAX: A JOURNAL BY JUNIE B. (AND ME!) Our musical opens with Junie celebrating her new top-secret personal beeswax journal, a gift from her mother, in which she can write and doodle anything, from her unique observations about the world, to drawings of wiener sausages. JUNIE B., FIRST GRADER (AT LAST!) It’s Junie B.’s first day of first grade, and a lot of things have changed for her: Junie’s kindergarten best friend, Lucille, doesn’t want to be her best pal anymore, and on the bus Junie makes friends with the new kid at school, Herb. Also, Junie has trouble reading the blackboard and needs glasses. She is afraid of being teased by the other children because of her new eyewear, until Herb borrows Junie’s glasses and declares that her eyes “must be very special” if she can see through them.

JUNIE B., ONE MAN BAND Junie B. prepares for the first grade kickball tournament by kicking her mother’s watering can and badly stubs her toe. Since she and her injury-prone classmate Sheldon can’t play, the teacher, Mr. Scary, suggests that they perform a half-time show. Junie’s father suggests that she make the best of an unfortunate situation, and learn to juggle for the halftime show. As much as she practices, she can’t get the hang of it. On the day of the tournament, the large crowd intimidates Sheldon, and he runs away, leaving Junie B. by herself. The restless crowd throws biscuits at her, and Junie tries to juggle one more time, and is successful! Her proud family and friends rush onto the field to congratulate her.

JUNIE B., BOSS OF LUNCH While basking in the joy of having a brand new lunch box, Junie B. notices that in first grade, most of the other children buy their lunches from Gladys Gutzman, who brought her kindergarten class cookies last year. When Junie B.

“I Want Ice Cream!” We all know Junie B. loves ice cream so have some fun in the kitchen (with help from an adult) and make your very own! Enjoy this easy to make recipe. INGREDIENTS: 300ml cream 2 tbsp caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla essence

2 trays of ice cubes 6 tbsp rock salt 1 medium Freezer bag

1 large Freezer bag fun colours & goodies to add are optional!

DIRECTIONS: 1. Place the cream, sugar and vanilla into a medium-sized sealable Freezer bag and combine the ingredients. Important! Be sure to zip up the bag securely first! 2. Place the ice into the larger Freezer bag. Then spoon the salt over the top of the ice. 3. Place the medium Freezer bag containing the cream mixture inside the larger Freezer bag on top of the ice & salt and zip it up securely! 4. Shake and massage the bag for five to 10 minutes or until the mixture becomes the consistency of ice cream. Wrap the bag in a tea towel or wear oven mitts while you’re shaking, it gets quite cold! It’s also a good idea to do this part outside or over a sink as the ice begins to melt. 5. Once ready, remove the bag of ice cream and give it a wipe to remove the salt from the outside of the bag. Now you now have your own homemade ice cream! 6. Snip a hole in a corner of the bag and squeeze out the ice cream or start eating right from the bag! 28

THE LITTLE GYM OF OAKVILLE These programs give children a ‘Jump Start’ in school as children progress through the program, we add just the right amount of new ingredients or activities to strengthen and build upon what they’ve already learned.” Highly trained instructors supervise all activities which may include tumbling, balance beam exercises, mats and other gymnastics equipment. Recreational equipment such as balls, scarves and bubbles also are used to help younger children develop skills like hand-eye coordination. Parents are welcome and encouraged to get involved with many activities along with their children. The non-competitive environment at The Little Gym provides a level of comfort to which children immediately respond. They are not afraid to participate or try new exercises, and instructors reward their efforts with consistent, positive feedback. “Children thrive in this type of environment,” Anson says. “We gauge success of our programs in terms of the self-confidence that children gain as a result of the skills that they learn, not in terms of winning or losing. The Little Gym’s primary goal is to provide children with a foundation in selfconfidence that they’ll carry with them into adulthood.” For more information about The Little Gym of Oakville and its variety of courses that include gymnastics, dance and sports skills, call 905-8158151 or visit www.tlgoakvillecan.com.

Scientists have found that children with more highly developed motor skills demonstrate a greater level of school-readiness and fare better in kindergarten than those with less developed motor skills. The Little Gym of Oakville has applied this research to its mission to help children develop their skills and confidence through a professionally developed curriculum. Not only do children learn to enhance their movement, coordination and balance, they also develop self-confidence by participating in programs designed to be fun, interactive and non-competitive. “We’ve had parents tell us that their children don’t even realize they’re learning because they’re having so much fun,” says Anson Lee-Pearn, Gym Director. “At The Little Gym, children learn to listen, follow directions, interact with other children emotionally and socially, and develop their physical capabilities. We’ve seen this happen, quite literally, one cartwheel or somersault at a time.” The Little Gym was founded in 1976. Since that time, the company has seen tremendous growth and success with its curriculumbased programs targeting children from four months to 12 years old. The Little Gym in Oakville opened in 2008 using the same successful formula to benefit the community’s families and children. “Each week, we offer classes with themes like Eye Can ‘Hand’-le It, and High Spirits on the High Bar that engage children and teach them new motor skills,” Anson says. “The curriculum is almost like a recipe –
