Appendix 3: A list of global climate change and its consequences Heat Wave- United States The United States has been under the attack of heat wave since July. The temperature rose to 43 degrees Celsius in New York. Power outage happened for 10 consecutive days in the Queen District in mid July because of high electricity consumption. People had to live without air conditioning but stand the high temperature. Mayor Bloomberg announced a state of emergency as a result of the heat and appealed to all New Yorkers to save power. Drought – China The worst drought ever for the last half century occurred in Sichuan and Chongqing this summer. It brought enormous economic loss amounting to RMB$15 billions and over 18 million people suffered from water shortage. Near 4,000 peasants, without choice, left their home to seek help from their relatives or be evacuated by the government. Bad crop harvests - Europe Hot weather swept across Europe resulting in serious bad crop harvests. Vegetables and potatoes stopped growing. The harvest of cabbages in some areas in the United Kingdom dropped by 40% and also a shortage of potatoes, pea, bean, broccoli and cauliflowers was inevitable across Europe. Thaw in snow mountains - Swiss Global warming leads to thawing of the permanent frozen earth in areas at the height of 2400 meters of the Alps. Rocks in the mountain became very unstable and collapsed, creating huge wave in the lake and serious casualties.
