All Images ©Greenpeace/Lu Guang

SUMMER ISSUE 10
GREENPOST
GREENPOST
SUMMER ISSUE 10
GREENPOST
www.greenpeace.org.cn

森林
破壞
08
(Paradise Forest) ■
(Tesco)

Kitkat
電郵予雀巢表達意見: kitkat.greenpeace.org.cn
©Greenpeace/Jiri Rezac

GREENPOST
SUMMER ISSUE 10

下載中國《超市排行榜》,到內地遊覽時,了解那間超市最安全! tinyurl.com/foodrank
SUMMER ISSUE 10

GREENPOST

Logging companies cut down the forests to make cheap wood products – such as furniture and flooring – to sell around the world (a lot of these timber products are made in China).
■
Loggers: such as Rimbunan Hijau (Malaysia)
■
Palm oil companies and buyers: such as Sinar Mas, Wilmar, Cargill, Nestlé, Unilever
Palm oil companies clear the forest for palm oil plantations. Worldwide demand for palm oil is growing because it is used in so many daily products such as crisps, chocolate, cream cheese, margarine, cosmetics and biofuels.
■
Why save it? ■
The Paradise Forests are rich in plant and animal life including the endangered Sumatran Tiger and the Orangutan.
■
The forests are also home to indigenous peoples.
■
Deforestation is a big climate killer. It is responsible for about 20% of total greenhouse gases – that’s more than is given out by all the world’s cars, planes and trains.
■
Forests are the lungs of the planet. They replenish oxygen and help to stabilise the climate.

Orangutan The orangutans are one of our closest relatives. Indeed, the word orangutan comes from the Malaysian word for ‘man of the forest’. Like us, they belong to the Great Ape family and are very intelligent. They often use tools. For example, when it rains, orangutans like to make umbrellas from big leaves. While they like their own company, mothers will stay with their young until he or she is seven years old. Orangutans live in two countries in the whole world – Indonesia and Malaysia. Current estimates put their numbers at around 50,000 – that’s even less than the number of people living in Kowloon! They only live in trees and that’s why the biggest single threat to their survival is logging. How can we let companies like Nestlé kill the orangutan just for a bar of chocolate?

We choose Nestlé. Nestlé still buys its palm oil (to make into vegetable oil for its chocolate and crisps) from Sinar Mas (a major destroyer of Indonesian rainforests).

Nestlé files a complaint to Youtube on copyright grounds and gets it pulled. But this sparks a ‘social media firestorm’.

Hound Nestlé
From London to Beijing Greenpeace activists dressed as orangutans protest outside Nestlé headquarters and factories.
Step back and let the public take over
Angry consumers swamp Nestlé’s facebook fan page. The page moderator gets very snippy causing traditional media to report that the company has ‘really screwed up its social media!’
What do Nestlé say?
No doubt, Nestlé is very embarrassed by all the bad press. Their PR officers claim they are investigating their palm oil suppliers but that it “will take time.” Greenpeace says that’s not good enough. Unilever and Kraft have both ditched Sinar Mas out of their supply chain so why hasn’t Nestlé? Let’s keep the pressure up. We have the power. Can I avoid palm oil? It’s hard because palm oil isn’t labelled on the majority of products, it is often just called vegetable oil. Should we stop using palm oil? While some companies have said they will boycott the use of palm oil altogether, Greenpeace believes that this is not necessary. Instead it is urging companies to continue using palm oil but to guarantee that it is sustainable palm oil, in other words not from new plantations. The problem with Nestlé is that they are still indirectly buying palm oil from Sinar Mas – a company which continues to clear large swathes of Indonesian forest for lucrative palm oil plantations.

FIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE WITH
SUNSHINE GREENPOST SUMMER ISSUE 10
Since September last year, the south of China has been strangled by drought. For farmers this means withered harvests and dry, baked earth. For tens of millions of people it means struggling to find enough water to wash and even to drink. For decades now scientists have told us climate change will bring extreme weather and this terrible drought is a good warning of what we can expect. Greenpeace wanted to show the people of China there is hope and there are answers. All Images ŠGreenpeace/Lu Guang

There’s so much we can do to stop climate change. Encouraging the innovative and amazing use of renewable energy is one, but another important tool is getting everyone to just be more intelligent about using energy. Over half of all Hong Kong’s carbon dioxide emissions come from the inefficient use of electricity in buildings. Big profits can be made on real estate in Hong Kong, and the government does its best to foster the sector, but in the blind pursuit of profits they have both forgotten that energy efficient buildings are smart.
CARBON AUDITS: TIME TO TALK TOUGH WITH GOVERNMENT What is a carbon audit? In the same way that we get a physical examination to detect health issues, a carbon audit can pick out weak points in how a building uses energy leading to carbon emissions, suggesting ways to reduce energy consumption thus saving money and saving the climate. Unfortunately carbon audits are voluntary in Hong Kong. Since developers are unlikely to do one on their own initiative we believe they should be compulsory for every building in Hong Kong.
2. Require all developers to ensure all new buildings have a better energy performance than the average obtained from step one.
5 easy ways to make our buildings greener
Almost 90% of Hong Kong’s electricity is consumed by buildings. If designers incorporate the five following easy rules, our new buildings can be much smarter.
3. Insulation is key In the scorching heat of summer, our apartments can feel like an oven, but if the walls were well insulated our room would naturally be cooler. 4. Cut down on parking Underground car parks gobble up lots of energy in lighting and ventilation.
2. Natural ventilation is key If you can create cross-ventilation by opening facing windows then you can naturally keep your flat cooler.
5. Create more shading Just as people wear sun hats in the summer, architects can incorporate shade into new building design.

3. Require new development projects to use microclimate analysis in the design stage. That means design intelligently to take advantage of natural light, ventilation and local climatic conditions to minimise the amount of energy needed to cool, heat and light buildings.

FUNDRAISINGUPDATE
This year we used a splash of creativity to call on the Hong Kong public to join our Fill Our Cup with Hope campaign, a crucial project to raise awareness and support for our water pollution work. On World Water Day (March 22) we held a fun event with four giant mugs, and three celebrities – singers Hins Cheung and Chet Lam, and designer Prudence Mak of design brand “Chocolate Rain”. The designs on the mugs expressed peoples’ hopes for solving China’s water pollution crisis. Prudence Mak
One time I was in Dongguan (a city in “Guangdong) hoping to cooperate with a
company in the area. While I was there, I came across a blue-coloured river. Later I found out the blue colour came from that company, a denim jeans factory. So I decided not to cooperate with the company after all. As a designer, it’s important to understand what the companies you are cooperating with are doing. It’s not right to pollute the planet just to earn some money. For my Mug of Hope, I painted my icon, a mermaid called Fatina. I hope everyone can use their love and their strength to stop this water pollution nightmare.

In Switzerland I saw a beautiful “scene. On the side of the road I saw
a tree that had been chopped down. On its side, a thick blanket of snow had fallen. I wanted to drink that snow, it was so pure. But the world’s clean water resources are shrinking. Now millions of people cannot enjoy the basic human right of access to clean water. Every time you drink a glass of water, remember how precious it is. It is so precious we should treasure it as if it is the last cup of clean water left on the earth.

I grew up in Guangzhou. Near my house is a tributary of the Pearl River. When I was young the water was very clear and fresh and aquamarine, but now it’s turned black. It looks like the Pearl River has become really polluted.
FUNDRAISINGUPDATE
Water is essential for life. So when our water source becomes polluted it can seriously harm us. If the water supply to a city becomes polluted, then what happens to the people? In my cup design, I painted a water drop and a heart shape. I hope that everybody will realise how precious water is, join Greenpeace in solving China’s water pollution crisis and help the 300 million people in China living with dirty water.

Jeans City where the river runs black Just across the border in Guangdong province is Xintang township. This is where the world’s jeans are sewn and dyed. There is so little control over factory wastewater, that the river here runs blue-black from the dyes used in making the jeans. Last month, CNN did a special report. They visited factories where “workers snap buttons on jeans so fast you can barely see their hands move.” Every year about 200 million pairs of jeans are made here, including top brands, said CNN. This CNN story comes hot on the heels of a report we released several months back called Poisoning the Pearl. In this report we discovered several factories were dumping hazardous waste – including heavy metals – straight into the Pearl River.
GREENPOST
CNN interviewed Greenpeace China campaigner Edward Chan on the jeans pollution. He told CNN: “The problem with [the factory] pipes is that they don't have labelling. You don't know what is coming out from them. Some of it might be domestic discharge from the dormitories, but it could also include industrial waste.” Last year, Greenpeace also made a scouting trip to jeans city. These are some of the pictures we took.
