Happy Birthday, Mall of America! Throughout its 30-year history, Mall of America has always dared to be bigger and better. In addition to being the largest mall in the country, Mall of America is home to the nation’s first indoor theme park, the state’s largest aquarium, and houses a wide variety of truly unique dining and retail experiences for guests of all ages and interests.

Mall of America is always on the bucket list for visitors and locals alike, but this year is extra special. In celebration of the mall’s 30th anniversary, Mall of America is spreading the love with exciting sweepstakes for guests to win prizes, including vacation getaways, concert tickets, shopping sprees, and much more. Guests will also find onsite celebrations throughout the year with celebrity appearances, concerts, and community events—all leading up to the official birthday celebration in August 2022. In 1989, Mall of America broke ground in a place already special to many Minnesotans. The mall is built on the site of the former Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, where the Minnesota Twins and Vikings formerly dazzled crowds of fans. After three years of construction, 150,000 people attended Mall of America’s Grand Opening to see the largest mall in American history. Today, the mall is visited by millions of people each year from all over the world. A lot has changed over these 30 years. Mall of America began with 330 retail stores and has grown to host 500 stores at last count—plus dining options and attractions, including the interactive Lego store, The Escape Game, House of Comedy, SEA LIFE Aquarium, and of course, the Nickelodeon Universe theme park. Mall of America is home to plenty of big names aside from beloved big retailers and luxury brands. While the mall has enjoyed visits over the years from Michael Jackson, Angelina Jolie, Mariah Carey, and more, some celebrities have put down business roots at the mall. For example, there is Wahlburgers, a burger joint founded by actor Mark Wahlberg and his brothers; athleisure store Fabletics, owned by actress Kate Hudson; and the mall’s newest addition, Draper James, actress Reese Witherspoon’s southern living-inspired clothing and home goods store. Celebrity meet-andgreets and performances have always been part of this historic space, and now guests are able to find their favorite celebrity brands year-round. At Mall of America, there is truly something for everyone—one of the perks of having over 5.6 million square feet of space to work with—but, rest assured, the mall always makes sure visitors and locals alike get a taste of Minnesota amid their other offerings. Guests will be especially excited

Be A Part of History Minneapolis and St. Paul are two distinct cities, with their own communities, cultures, and histories, each informed by hundreds of years of industry, migration, and connection to nature. The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) oversees more than 20 historic sites throughout the Twin Cities and the rest of the state, including the Minnesota History Center in downtown St. Paul. Whether in historic homes of Minnesotan aristocrats or in a mill-turned-museum, you’ll be able to find family-friendly fun, films, and exhibits that will take you back in time and enrich your experience of the Twin Cities today. One of the things visitors might notice when driving around the state are place names such as Wayzata, Minnehaha, Mississippi, and Bemidji. These names, like many others you’ll see around the state, come from the languages of indigenous Minnesotans—the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples. You can learn the history of the original Minnesotans through artifacts, maps, photos, and stories

in the exhibit, “Our Home: Native Minnesota,” at the Minnesota History Center, which illustrates the rich cultural traditions that these communities have sustained for thousands of years. One of the primary goals of MNHS is to involve and educate people of all ages in Minnesota history. At the Mill City Museum, built in what was once the world’s largest flour mill, visitors can participate in hands-on learning at the Baking Lab and the Water Lab and learn the intertwined history of the Mississippi, the mill and the beginning of the Minneapolis we know and love. In 2022, Minnesotans and visitors alike will be delighted to see Historic Fort Snelling reopening to the public on Memorial Day weekend. The fort has been around since the 1820s and sits at the

intersection of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers, a place of cultural and historical significance for the Dakota, European fur-traders, and the U.S. military. Over the last year, Fort Snelling has revitalized its visitor experience through new exhibits, a riverwalk, and an increased focus on telling the stories of all the many people who have crossed paths on this land. Here in the Twin Cities, history is happening now, and the Minnesota Historical Society invites you to be part of it.

La Crosse Welcome to the Wilderness

The riverside city of La Crosse, Wisconsin, is nestled in the famous Driftless Region—an area that was miraculously never covered by ice during the last Ice Age, resulting in a lack of glacial deposits. Other areas were scraped down and leveled into plains by glaciers, but the Driftless Region is what is left of the Upper Midwest’s natural geography. This is the story behind La Crosse’s stunning limestone bluff views, forested ridges, and deep river valleys. The La Crosse Region’s proximity to both the Mississippi River and the famous bluffs makes this a great spot to hike, bike, boat, and fish. Many visitors drive up to Grandad Bluff, stroll along Riverside Park, or cruise the Mississippi on the La Crosse Queen Paddle Boat—but there are plenty of off-the-beaten-path spots to explore too!

Go fishing on the Mississippi, see the beautiful views while hiking the bluffs, or grab a bike and explore—all in the LA CROSSE REGION.

Two of the nearby hidden gems are also results of the lack of glacial deposits. Drive up into the bluffs to find the Rim of the City, a beautiful lookout spot that may be less popular than Grandad Bluff but is absolutely worth the drive for the view of the river valley—especially in the fall when views of the foliage are truly incredible. Only an hour south and 200 feet beneath the earth lies Niagara Cave,

where you’ll find 450-million-year-old fossils and an underground waterfall along this one-mile-long underground hike. The ancient natural beauty of the area, plus the quality lodgings and Historic Downtown area, make the La Crosse Region the perfect place to stay for those wanting a home base from which to explore the great outdoors. explorelacrosse.com

Minneapolis

NORTHEAST Betty Danger’s is a retro hangout with American food— plus a ferris wheel!

Minneapolis is the largest of the Twin Cities and, in many ways, the cultural epicenter of the state. It is chock-full of award-winning art museums, music venues, and restaurants. The edgy North Loop, hip Uptown, and peaceful Linden Hills areas are just a few of the communities that make Minneapolis diverse in both experience and opportunity. Linden Hills—Nestled between Lake Harriet and Bde Maka Ska, Linden Hills is a residential neighborhood with easy access to both the city and beautiful outdoor spaces. While here, visit the Bakken Museum, pick up some local produce from the Linden Hills Farmers Market, or take in a concert at the Lake Harriet Band Shell.

Northeast—The Northeast neighborhood falls along the northern curve of the Mississippi River as it flows along Minneapolis. There are two distinct areas; the first of which is the Arts District, where you’ll find beloved restaurants like Psycho Suzi’s and Betty Danger’s and plenty of art studios and galleries. The second is the Riverfront District,

home to walkable areas like Boom Island Park and Main Street, and of course, stunning views of the downtown skyline. Longfellow—Located along the Mississippi River Gorge, the Longfellow neighborhood has plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities, including the famous Minnehaha Falls and Minnehaha Regional Park. Drive through neighborhoods to see beautiful residential housing or walk along the Minnehaha Mile to find an array of vintage shops. Seward—Seward is one of Minneapolis’ oldest neighborhoods and has a quieter feel than other neighborhoods. With miles of scenic bike trails, this is an excellent place for cyclists to explore. While visiting, check out Memory Lanes bowling alley or restaurants like Pizza Lucé or Cafe Racer Kitchen for Colombian street food-style cuisine. Uptown—Uptown offers the best of both worlds— just ask the locals! This neighborhood sits along the north end of the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes and has all the outdoor recreation activities you crave, while also being a walkable neighborhood with plenty of bars, restaurants, movie theaters, and shops.

MIDTOWN GREENWAY The Midtown Greenway is a 5.7-mile rail trail in Minneapolis that follows the path of an abandoned route of the Milwaukee Road railway.

Warehouse District/North Loop—The North Loop is one of the hippest neighborhoods in the city. Located near the Hennepin Avenue Bridge, it’s the home of the Minnesota Twins at Target Field and has plenty of event spaces like the Aria and Hewing Hotel. The North Loop has walkable access to some of the best restaurants in Minneapolis, including D.NOLO and Spoon and Stable, as well as a wide array of locally-owned boutiques for all your fashion needs. George Floyd Square

Culture

At the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, people from all walks of life and from around the globe pay their respects at what has become one of the most well-known places in the world.

Outdoors

In May 2020, George Floyd was killed at the hands of police, and the site of his death has become a gathering place to memorialize Floyd’s life and other victims of police brutality. The space is filled with sculptures, murals, and paintings— telling the powerful story of Minneapolis communities coming together to rally around the importance of Black lives and racial justice.

Cathedral Hill—The Cathedral Hill neighborhood begins at the grand Cathedral of St. Paul and stretches west toward the Mac-Groveland area. Highlights of this beautiful residential area include Selby Avenue, a charming street with many coffee shops and small businesses to support, and historic sites like the F. Scott Fitzgerald House and the iconic Summit Avenue homes. Mac-Groveland—The Mac-Groveland neighborhood is often described as a college town within a big city. It sits between Minneapolis and St. Paul and is home to several private universities, namely Macalester College. Because it is a college neighborhood, there are plenty of hip brunch and lunch spots and unique shops to visit. PHOTOS: (TOP) ROBERT FERDINANDT/VISIT SAINT PAUL; (BOTTOM) VISIT SAINT PAUL

Worth the Drive

Culture

Searching for something outside the city? Here are a few top recommendations within driving distance of the Twin Cities.

Outdoors

Just a 30-minute drive from the Twin Cities, the picturesque city of Stillwater is worth a visit. Take a ride on the riverboats, walk across the historic bridges, or enjoy an afternoon exploring the antique shops, restaurants, and bars along the cobblestone main street.

West St. Paul—West St. Paul is actually to the south of downtown, located on the west bank of the Mississippi River. Home to a large Latino community, this neighborhood is full of excellent Mexican restaurant options located along Cesar Chavez Street. You can also check out the nightclub inside the Wabasha Street Caves and learn about St. Paul’s gangster history. Or if you’re more of an outdoorsy type, try kayaking or paddle boarding on the river.

Red Wing is home to plenty of recreation and entertainment, including six museums. Try your luck at Treasure Island Resort and Casino, or enjoy a brew at the Red Wing Brewery.

Lowertown—Lowertown sits on the edge of St. Paul and is home to myriad artists and young professionals. Here, you can go to CHS Field and watch the St. Paul Saints play ball, visit the Minnesota Museum of American Art, or check out brunch or lunch at The Buttered Tin (try their in-house raspberry jam!).

Payne-Phalen—Payne-Phalen is the largest St. Paul neighborhood and is located due north of the city center. When visiting, be sure to try some of the many international food options and take a stroll around Phalen Regional Park.

Communities

West 7th Street—The West 7th Street area runs along the Mississippi River and was the first St. Paul settlement. Now it has become a hot spot for bars and restaurants due to its close proximity to St. Paul’s event centers. Toward the north end, check out Cosetta’s Italian Market & Pizzeria, Pajarito, or Summit Brewing Company before heading over to the Xcel Energy Center for a concert or Minnesota Wild game.

Marine on St. Croix is a dream for history buffs and fans of the great outdoors. Trek through William O’Brien State Park, or get a slice of Swedish immigrant history at the Stone House Museum and Settler’s Cabin, a log structure built in 1852.
