Bloomington
SIMPLY CENTRAL
For a city with a rich history that has risen to the modern occasion, there is Bloomington. The suburb has grown to become a hub of transportation, hospitality, business, and community. With companies like Dairy Queen, Toro, Ceridian, and HealthPartners headquartered in Bloomington, the city has created more jobs per capita than Saint Paul or Minneapolis. The abundance of space in Bloomington allows it to serve as the gateway to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and North America’s premier retail destination, Mall of America®. But a modern feel doesn’t mean that Bloomington has lost touch with its roots. The natural wonders of the area—including the Hyland Lake Park Reserve and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge—culminate in miles upon miles of reserved parkland.
Connect with the community by taking the time to experience all the city has to offer. See our residents’ creativity shine on the South Loop Arts Tour (page 50) before taking a break with a pint at our local brewery (page 46). Explore the Hyland Lake Park Reserve (page 10), or play a round at one of our preeminent golf courses (page 70). Try a meal at a local restaurant (page 42), and take advantage of zero sales tax on clothes and shoes in Minnesota by hitting the shops at Mall of America (page 12).
Wherever you come from, we’re glad you’re here.
WELCOME TO BLOOMINGTON.

Support community members and their endeavors at these local businesses
Small businesses are an important part of any city’s economy. Supporting local entrepreneurs helps them follow their passions and keep their prices fair. Bloomington and Mall of America® do their part to stimulate small businesses and contribute to job creation through these merchants. Read on to learn about some of Bloomington and Mall of America’s small businesses.
AGAPE AFRICAN MARKET
A staple throughout Bloomington and the south metro for more than 20 years, Agape African Market is a family business that brings people together from all walks of life. Agape stocks a vast assortment of goods including East and West African food, clothing, candy, and more. The combination of warm customer service, great food, and fair prices has earned them many repeat customers. Owners Emmanuel and Comfort welcome everyone to their store and continue to spread “agape”—God’s love.
MHIRIPIRI GALLERY
Owners Rex and Julie created Mhiripiri Gallery as a passion project to bring exotic paintings, prints, and Zimbabwe Shona stone sculptures to Bloomington. The two have owned the gallery since 1986 and moved to their current location at the corner of Penn and 90th in 2005. They make it a point to have relationships with the artists whose works they carry. To do this, Rex and Julie use their buying trips to connect with said artists and build a bond while they look for pieces to have in the gallery.
LURO BOOTS
For the past 11 years, Luro Boots owner Gilberto Diaz has curated his shop to be fun, colorful, and full of Western styles. Visitors can get styled from head to toe in vaquero (cowboy) pieces and an assortment of other options. The family-owned shop wanted to do their part to contribute to the local community and decided to focus on a style they know and love. Diaz and his family believe that the variety of people who live around them make a stronger and more close-knit community.
EL GUANACO BAKERY Y CAFÉ II
As a Salvadoran bakery, El Guanaco provides unique and authentic foods that resonate with the community. The East Bloomington bakery is one of three El Guanaco bakeries, with the other two setting up shop in Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Homemade touches make every product high quality and keep customers coming back for more. Try the perfectly cooked pan dulce, tasty pupusas, Salvadoran tamales, and fresh-baked goods from the bakery case. El Guanaco is a family-friendly restaurant that provides top-tier service in a cozy atmosphere.

Great dining is Bloomington’s bread and butter, so to speak. This area boasts a slate of top-notch restaurants, whether you’re grabbing a quick bite between meetings or need to refuel after a day on the trails or at the shops.
Start your day right at Fiddlehead Coffee Co., a Minnesotan-owned coffee shop that specializes in smallbatch roasts. The lush interior decor, smiling baristas, and perfect cup of joe provide the ideal pick me up before taking on all that Bloomington has to offer.
Located just east of Mall of America®, Hazelwood Food + Drink’s impressive menu of steaks, sandwiches, and woodfired pizzas makes for a great lunch or dinner. Pair your mouthwatering meal with a fun cocktail or mocktail from the extensive drink menu.
Wine and Italian food are a match made in heaven. Along with classic Italian dishes, Ciao Bella has many small plates and appetizers that groups can enjoy together, plus an enviable wine list that pairs perfectly with your pasta. Carmine’s
Bar & Grille is another great spot for casual Italian fare, and its menu also includes the wings and nachos of a first-rate neighborhood pub. For some hearty pasta dishes in a warm, relaxed atmosphere, Luna di Luna is a must. The Italian roots of the family that owns Luna di Luna embolden them to have an extensive wine list and create new takes on classic dishes.
For delicious international eats, consider Aroma Indian Cuisine
This hidden gem serves up several Northern and Southern Indian specialties and some of the best tandoori chicken around. Plus, it has plenty of vegetarian-friendly options. Nearby, Hyderabad Indian Grill is all about slow cooking, bringing out the flavors of signature dishes, such as Egg Biryani and Coconut Curry.

Shake Shack Mall of America
Mandarin Kitchen has a huge menu of great Chinese food, but there are definitely some fan favorites here, loved by the locals. Each weekend morning, you’ll find dim sum so good that it typically draws a big crowd. If you’re hoping to beat the line, head to the restaurant around 9:30 a.m. when it opens.
Drop anchor at Smack Shack, a recent addition to the dining scene in Bloomington. Originally a food truck, Smack Shack became so popular, it spawned not one, but two seafood restaurants throughout the Twin Cities. Now a popular haunt for brunch, lunch, and dinner, Smack Shack serves up Southern-inspired food and seafood favorites.
Experience Southern hospitality right here in Bloomington at Mallards Restaurant & Lounge. While the dining room may feel casual, the meals are anything but. Fans of savory meals will love Mallard’s Tennessee Hot Chicken Sandwich, Shrimp & Grits, and Jambalaya, to name a few.
MALL FEATURES

FOR THE LOVE OF LUNCH
Beloved local chain Snuffy’s Malt Shop has been serving up some of the finest old-school cheeseburgers and malts in the state since the 1980s. Get a basket of onion rings for the table (or for yourself, no judgments here).
For pizza delivery, check out Umbria. It has a huge list of specialty pizzas, including Mac & Cheese Pizza (a local favorite), plus garlic bread and wings. Umbria also serves calzones for those who prefer their pizzas in pockets.
Gyropolis is often touted as one of the best Greek restaurants in the metro area. Get a side order of falafel and spicy tzatziki sauce or some homemade baklava. Make sure to check them out in August or September when fresh produce is sourced from the owners’ farm.
For sandwich lovers, two shops on Penn Avenue, Wally’s Roast Beef and Penn Lake Roast Beef, have you covered. Both sell a variety of sandwiches and include roast beef specials. Along with the restaurant menu, Penn Lake Roast Beef sells its famous meat and sides by the pound.
PUB GRUB
Willy McCoys has something for everyone. The extensive menu includes burgers, tacos, flatbread pizzas, pasta, sandwiches, and a standout whiskey list. Get a taste of the Twin Cities’ craft beer scene and head over to Northstar Tavern, where you can choose from two dozen rotating local beers on tap that will complement any of its tasty appetizers.
Brunch should be considered one of the main food groups, and no one does weekend brunch better than Lucky’s 13 Pub. Lucky’s puts its own spin on breakfast classics with dishes like Piña Colada Pancakes and Walleye Eggs Benedict, in addition to tried-and-true favorites like French toast and omelets. One of the highlights of the Lucky’s spread is the Bloody Mary and Breakfast Burrito, meant to be savored together.

Breweries
OF ALL KINDS
The Twin Cities has a fast-growing craft brewery scene that rivals some of the best beer towns in the nation. Here in the south metro area, breweries range from the classic to the eclectic, with something to please every drinker.
In 2019, the citizens of Bloomington voted to amend a provision in the city charter that regulated alcohol sales. Shortly thereafter, a group of Bloomington locals incorporated Nine Mile Brewing Co., named in honor of Nine Mile Creek that flows out of Normandale Lake and snakes through Bloomington to the Minnesota River. Nine Mile is led and operated by Bloomington locals and well-respected veterans of the brewery business. John Leingang, formerly the head brewer at Minneapolis’ Dangerous Man Brewing, is now head brewer, alongside Bloomington resident and manager, Mark Mussell. The cozy, rustic interior, which includes a 20-foot cedar canoe hanging from the ceiling, is meant to be an ode to the nearby river, one of the many natural features that make Bloomington special. The dog-friendly taproom and patio is the perfect place to play board games, catch up with friends, and sample delicious porters and lagers.
Just outside Bloomington city limits in neighboring Edina, brothers Sean and James Ewen opened Wooden Hill Brewery Co.’s spacious taproom and two patios to serve up house-made craft brews. The Kold Shoulder is a light kolsch that’s terrific in the summer, and the Hop Fizz is described as where “champagne and beer worlds collide.” Be sure to try the juicy IPA, Code 3, which was awarded Best American IPA at the 2021 MN Brewer’s Cup. The brewery also makes a range of sour beers and hard seltzers, and has a full kitchen on site so you can get a basket of four varieties of loaded Fancy Fries, if not an order of nachos or a fried chicken sandwich.
Venn Brewing Co. is conveniently located next to the 46th Street station on the Metro Transit Blue Line, four quick stops north of Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. This brewery is known for its dry-hopped and hazy IPAs, sweet stouts, pastry beers, and series of Cosmosis sours. It’ll usually have a food truck parked outside—check the online calendar for upcoming eats.
If you’re into experimental beers you can’t taste anywhere else, Wild Mind Artisan Ales is the place to go. This South
TRUE MINNESOTA SPIRIT
The Twin Cities have also seen a handful of inventive distilleries spring up in the last few years. Head to Flying Dutchman Spirits in Eden Prairie for flavors from all corners of the world. Its Mediterráneo Gin won a silver medal from the American Distilling Institute in its first year of production and makes a great gimlet. The suburb of St. Louis Park has two celebrated distilleries just across the street from one another: Copperwing Distillery makes excellent light whiskey and a strawberry gin, and family-owned and operated Dampfwerk Distilling specializes in European-style fruit brandies and liqueurs in its sleek and stylish cocktail room. In Northeast Minneapolis (which has a multitude of fine places to stop for cocktails), Tattersall Distilling taps into a modern-yethistoric sense for spirits with its speakeasystyle atmosphere and refreshing cocktails made with sophisticated liqueurs. Visit Tattersall’s website (tattersalldistilling.com) to make a reservation to sit inside or be seated first come, first serve on its dog-friendly patio.

Tattersall Distilling
Minneapolis brewery specializes in oak-aged sours, wild-fermented ales, saisons and farmhouse beers, and hazy IPAs. For refreshing nonalcoholic options, try the local craft sodas, sparkling water, or kombucha. The brewery also often hosts Mayfly, a food truck serving the internationally inspired tacos, burgers, and sandwiches of Chef Patrick Moore.
For beer that truly rocks, visit Bald Man Brewing in Eagan. The beers are named after classic rock songs (like the Heart of Glass Blondie Ale), and the brewery often hosts live music and other events.
If you’re venturing into the downtown areas of the Twin Cities, check out Fulton Beer, Modist Brewing Co., and FINNEGANS Brew Co. in Minneapolis, and Summit Brewing Co., Bad Weather Brewing Co., and Barrel Theory Beer Co. in Saint Paul.
WONDERFUL WINERIES
A SHORT DRIVE AWAY
Have a few extra hours? Drive west to the beautiful lakeside city of Waconia and stop by one of the city’s awardwinning wineries. Reserve a private country-chic gazebo at Schram Vineyards (open year round), or enjoy an intimate wine tasting in its Barrel Room. For a large variety of wine to suit many tastes, check out The Winery at Sovereign Estate, which has live music on the weekends in addition to its traditional wine tastings. Parley Lake Winery’s wine has won over 200 medals in national and international wine competitions. Sip these muchlauded wines while you take in the indoor art gallery and meet the life-size Goddess of the Grapes, one of many art pieces along its Sculpture Stroll.

BLOOMINGTON Taco Trail
Bloomington might already be well known for its hidden gems, ample parks, and Mall of America®—but this foodie hub is a destination all its own. At the heart of Bloomington’s food landscape is a prominent taco trail, encompassing a large group of restaurants with offerings ranging from bona fide authentic to upscale modern.
TIMELESS TRADITIONALS
A Bloomington staple for years at their two locations, El Loro is a family establishment with traditional options and large portions. El Loro’s amazing apps include Queso Fundido, Jalapeño Poppers, Super Chori Nachos, and Mini Flautas. Tacos are available with your choice of meat and a variety of toppings. Try the pick-two or pick-three combos to sample as much of the menu as possible.
For traditional food in a modern and stylish location, Taqueria y Birrieria Las Cuatro Milpas delivers. The full menu includes ceviche, dorados, street tacos, burritos,
and more. The seafood options are extensive, and the agua fresca is a fresh companion to the simple, yet delicious menu.
Venture to Chevys Fresh Mex for food made from scratch using farm-fresh ingredients. Slow-roasted carnitas, shrimp enchiladas, and mesquite grilled fajitas are just a few popular options on the Chevys menu. Have the authentic tamales with a hand-crafted drink (like a Rosé-a-Rita), or try something new and delicious from the seasonal menu.
Andale Taqueria y Mercado, located just across Interstate 494 in Richfield, has authentic flavors in a cafeteria-style setting with a market attached. Andale’s street tacos, expertly seasoned beans and rice, and monstrous tamales are all top-notch choices. Be sure to try the huevos rancheros, sizzling fajitas, and chicken pattillo to see why this hot spot is one of the best-kept secrets in town.

Check out tacos, nachos, burritos, and more—all within Bloomington’s bustling food scene
Andale Taqueria y Mercado
Winner of three “Best of the Twin Cities” awards—Best Burrito, Best Cheap Eats, and Best Mexican Restaurant— Taqueria la Hacienda in Richfield is known for its mix of modern favorites and familiar classic dishes. Tacos here are served with cilantro, onion, salsa, and your choice of meat. For a meal to remember, try the famous tacos al pastor and churronuts (churro donuts) for dessert.
Part of a successful restaurant chain, Taco Libre is a cafeteria-style locale, complete with a salsa bar. The street tacos, American tacos, fish tacos, and quesabirria have gained a cult following. For the ultimate “wow” factor, try The Machete an 18-inch masa tortilla filled with Oaxaca cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and your choice of protein. Other notable menu items include the empanadas, flautas, and tamales.
MODERN TAKES ON CLASSICS
Mall of America® houses three delectable spots to stop for a taco. Cantina Laredo is a stand-alone restaurant that offers a taste of modern Mexico. Start with their guacamole, loaded with charred jalapeño and queso fresco. Their traditional tacos are served with beans and rice and your choice of five meat options, including Impossible tacos with vegan meat and cheese.
Mall of America’s Culinary on North is getting a shakeup in the former Hot Indian Foods location. The owners of the local brand decided to switch it up to Bussin Birria Tacos, which features handmade dishes with in-house seasoning, including tacos, nachos, and quesadillas. Classic and modern plates are available, plus vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and halal options.
Popular lunch and dinner spot CRAVE Food & Drink features Korean short rib tacos, a savory dish that makes the whole trip worth it. A flour tortilla is topped with kimchi, braised short rib glazed in Korean miso sauce, spicy mayo, green onions, and sesame seeds.
In nearby South Minneapolis, contemporary street food mixed with traditional Mexican ingredients awaits at Órale Mexican Eats. The classic tacos stay simple with cilantro and onion, plus your choice of meat. Step outside the box and try the Filipino barbecue taco, loaded with shredded pork on corn tortillas, pickled onions, queso fresco, cilantro, and sliced jalapeño.
The owner of El Camino Gourmet Tacos, with locations in Edina and Burnsville, embraces his Mexican-American roots—which are reflected in the restaurant’s unique menu items. Tacos are served on either corn or flour tortillas with options ranging from the classic El Primo beef taco topped with lettuce, tomato, and shredded jack cheese, to the Rajas Taco with cactus, peppers, onions, poblano peppers, black beans, pico, lettuce, and avocado.

IN THE GAME
The Twin Cities score big as home to a variety of sports teams
Whether it’s kickoff, the drop of a puck, or the first pitch that excites you, Minnesota boasts a variety of world-class sports teams and events that offer great entertainment for the whole family. Throughout the year, there are always major sporting events happening in the Twin Cities. Check out the following for an overview of the best Minnesota sports has to offer.
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
In the Twin Cities, Division I college sports are a mainstay, and the University of Minnesota hosts sporting events all year round. The Golden Gophers are a perennial contender in the Big Ten Conference and have amassed numerous NCAA Championships, including seven national football titles.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS: U.S. BANK STADIUM
Modeled with Nordic architecture in mind, U.S. Bank Stadium is one of the most recognizable buildings in Minneapolis. An engineering wonder, its translucent roof and walls allow fans to get spectacular views of downtown Minneapolis during the game while enjoying the comforts of a covered stadium. Opened in 2016, the venue has already hosted the 2018 Super Bowl and the 2019 NCAA Men’s Final Four, not to mention musical legends ranging from the Rolling Stones to Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.
MINNESOTA SPORTS AND EVENTS (MNSE) SETS SIGHTS ON SNAGGING SPORTS’ BIGGEST EVENTS
In response to the ever-increasing competition for cities to attract large-scale sports championships and other events to the region, leaders of Minnesota’s sports franchises, business community, and hospitality industry have come together to create Minnesota Sports and Events (MNSE). The nonprofit’s goal is to draw world-class events to the area.
MNSE works with local organizations and businesses to aggressively pursue economic opportunities for the state’s hospitality, tourism, and retail industries. When MNSE secures a bid, it then serves as the event’s permanent Local Organizing Committee (LOC), providing operations, marketing, fundraising, and event support.
MNSE was key in securing the 2021 NHL Winter Classic; forming the LOC for the 2022 NCAA Women’s Final Four; and winning the bid for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games. The PGA Ryder Cup is scheduled to come to Hazeltine National Golf Course in 2029. Other pursuits include NCAA College Football National Championship Game; CONCACAF Gold Cup; USA Volleyball Championships; Wrestlemania; and the NFL Draft.

MINNESOTA TWINS: TARGET FIELD
Target Field is nestled in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. Tickets are usually easy to find, especially during a weekday. Before the game, spend time at local restaurants like the Loon Café or Kieran’s Irish pub before heading to Gate 34 for lawn games and concessions.
MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/LYNX: TARGET CENTER
Directly across from Target Field and close to all the action is Target Center, home of the Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) and Minnesota Lynx (WNBA) teams. Target Center also hosts shows, concerts, and graduations due to its prime location in the center of Minneapolis.
MINNESOTA WILD: XCEL ENERGY CENTER
Hockey and Minnesotans go hand in hand, and Xcel Energy Center is the perfect place to see how dedicated Minnesota Wild fans are to their hometown team. Located in downtown Saint Paul, the arena has a buzz you can literally feel when you enter the gates, and the energy only goes up once the puck drops.
MINNESOTA UNITED FC: ALLIANZ FIELD
Allianz Field, which opened in 2019, is home to Minnesota’s professional men’s soccer team, Minnesota United FC (also known as the Loons). The fans are loud, the action is nonstop, and by the end of the game, don’t be surprised if you end up buying a pennant scarf in the pro shop.
MINNESOTA AURORA FC: TCO STADIUM
Minnesota Aurora is a women-led and communityowned women’s soccer team that began play in May 2022 in the newly formed USL W League. Home games are played at TCO Stadium in Eagan—part of the Vikings Lakes campus and adjacent to the Minnesota Vikings headquarters—which provides Minnesota Aurora with a first-class facility for fans and players.
SAINT PAUL SAINTS: CHS FIELD
The Saints Minor League Baseball team (which is a Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins) offers a fun fan experience unlike any other. You can get a haircut while you watch the game, participate in a random food or pillow fight, or even watch a game refereed by a judge. Located on the east side of downtown Saint Paul, CHS Field provides an exceptional viewing experience from every seat in the stadium.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
NCAA Big Ten Basketball Tournament: 2023 (Women’s) and 2024 (Men’s and Women’s)
The best teams in collegiate basketball face each other at Target Center.
2023 NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series
The Twin Cities area will host more than 900 games at various softball complexes. The Minnesota Twins have also signed on to the event, becoming the first MLB team to partner with the NAGAAA (National American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance) in its 46-year history.
NCAA Frozen Four: 2024 (Men’s) and 2025 (Women’s)

The Blue Line heads northbound from Mall of America Station—which links directly to the east entrance of the Mall—through the airport and Minneapolis neighborhoods. The Green Line travels east from Minneapolis into Saint Paul. Both light rails bring you through downtown Minneapolis near U.S. Bank Stadium and Target Field. Fares must be purchased at Metro Transit stores or stops before boarding the train. Schedules are available online and at most stops. A brisk 13-minute ride from the Mall brings you to the airport, and a 30-minute ride reaches Minneapolis. For more information, visit metrotransit.org

SKY-HIGH Accolades
Award-winning, thoughtfully designed and convenient, the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is one of the best airports in the nation
With first-class amenities, restaurants, and shops, it’s no wonder the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) has become one of the premier airports in the nation.
MSP boasts accolades like the Airport Council International-North America Award of Excellence and being named the Best Airport in North America in its size category four years in a row (2016-2019).
It’s like the old adage: The journey’s more important than the destination. While this might not be entirely true when it comes to air travel, MSP will help make the journey memorable with numerous great restaurants like LoLo American Kitchen, which was named the Best Airport
Bar by USA Today 10 Best in 2018. Cocina del Barrio is the place to be for tacos and tequila. The Holy Land Deli serves gyros, falafel, and incredible hummus. Or get one last plate of local cuisine with a Juicy Lucy at the Blue Door Pub or breakfast at Red Cow
If security was a breeze or you’re stuck on a layover, enjoy the art installations livening up the concourses, courtesy of the Airport Foundation’s Arts and Culture Program. With displays, musical performances, exhibits, and more, there’s bound to be something to catch your eye and make time fly.
If shopping is more your speed, MSP will suit your needs. Home to a wealth of options, like gear from Adventure North, button-down shirts and more from Hammer Made, and jewelry, decor, and more for the perfect gift from Open Book
Located within 10 miles of downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul, getting to and from MSP is easy when you are in the Twin Cities—whether it’s by rental car, Uber or Lyft, or one of the many free shuttles offered by Bloomington hotels.
