EDITOR'S LETTER

After the Fires, California Is Open for Business AS THIS ISSUE GOES TO PRINT, CALIFORNIA is recovering from a brutal and unprecedent-

Shelley Levitt, editor SHELLEY.LEVITT@TIGEROAK.COM

ed wildfire season. The Camp fire in Northern California was the deadliest wildfire in the United States in more than a century. Raging at the same time, the Woolsey and Hill fires in Southern California burnt more than 100,000 acres. Thanks to the heroic efforts of firefighters and other first responders, the fires are now completely contained, though the destruction in human lives and property damage is still being tallied. So, what can we do? In a note to industry partners, Caroline Beteta, president and CEO of Visit California, said that as it became safe for residents and travelers to return to regions affected by the fires, the travel and tourism commission was pivoting to an “open for business” message to restore communities to economic normalcy as quickly as possibly. The “travel alert” on VisitCalifornia.com has been one of welcome: “A vast majority of the Golden State is currently unaffected by fires.” Beteta suggested that we all do our bit to share that message by using #CALove across our social media channels as appropriate. And, where appropriate, we might also want to add a giving element—through funds, volunteer activities or clothing drives—to upcoming gatherings to aid the rebuilding effort and those impacted by the fires. The American Red Cross, California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund, California Fire Foundation and Humane Society of Ventura County are just a few of the reputable charitable organizations that are seeking donations and volunteers. As we celebrate the best in our industry in this third annual awards issue, we can each do our own best in demonstrating compassion, generosity and support to those whose lives and livelihoods have been shattered by the deadly wildfires.

meetings and events trend toward out-of-the-box, interactive experiences in nontraditional venues, planners are on the hunt for new and creative locales. Enter Peerspace: the Airbnb-style space sharing platform, pairing planners with unconventional and underutilized venues that fuel more effective meetings. “Peerspace was founded on the idea (and research shows) that location is key when it comes to meeting productivity,” says Rony Chammas, co-founder and chief product officer of Peerspace. “Meeting in a unique or comfortable space with features like natural light, plants or interesting artwork or architecture can boost inspiration and productivity. It’s all about finding those one-of-a-kind, unexpected spaces to help your team meet more creatively.” Those looking to break away from windowless conference rooms and drab ballrooms can find hidden gems in the local art galleries,

lofts, photography studios, warehouses, museums and even movie set locations listed on the platform. Users simply scroll through the platform’s online marketplace (which currently hosts over 8,000 listings in 46 states) to find the perfect space to host anything from workshops and corporate retreats to teambuilding events and fitness classes. Venues are Peerspace reviewed and approved, and include a detailed description of the space, guest capacity, rental price and user reviews, as well as high-quality photos (Peerspace offers professional photography for high-potential listings). Venues can be booked online at the click of a button. “We’ve made finding and booking a space as simple and streamlined as possible so planners can actually enjoy that process of discovery,” says Chammas. “We want to make discovering and working in new and unique spaces easy and exciting.” —By Megan Gosch

An Adult Take on Cereal Milk JUST WHEN YOU THINK THERE’S NOTHING NEW in the world of breakfast cereal comes this innovation from chef Joey Maggiore, owner of the three Hash Kitchen breakfast spots in Scottsdale, Arizona: cereal shooters. Maggiore creates a boozy take on the milk that has been soaking in a bowl of Captain Crunch, Cocoa Puffs, Fruity Pebbles or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Added to the frothy milk are, respectively, hazelnut liqueur, coffee liqueur, fruity vodka and spiced rum. This might be a better treat for the after-dinner dessert bar than the breakfast buffet. hashkitchen.com —Shelley Levitt

rustacean Beverly Hills, the groundbreaking restaurant that brought Euro-Vietnamese fusion cuisine to Southern California, reopened in March 2018, after an eight-month, $10 million redesign. With elegant adjustable walls, the new floor plan offers the versatility to accommodate everything from intimate private dinners to large corporate events. Private dining options range from the Santa Monica Room, with or without the Patio Lounge, which can accommodate 35 guests for a sit-down event, and the Bedford Bar & Lounge (50 seated; 80 for cocktails) to a full restaurant buyout (capacity 150 seated; 250 reception). No dinner at Crustacean, as regulars will remind you, would be complete without Chef An’s Famous Garlic Noodles. Other standout dishes include tuna cigars, served, of course, in a cigar box, complete with smoke; Himalayan salt block steak; crispy duck egg rolls; Vietnamese wagyu tartare and the hearts of palm vegan “crab” cakes. The bar program includes a wellness take on classics, with drinks like the Turmeric Mule and Artichoke Old-Fashioned. Crustacean’s event team can design customized menus that spotlight a company’s theme, branding and logo, and the in-house creative team is also available to handle every detail from live music entertainment to invites and personalized party favors. crustaceanbh.com

Blood Orange Margarita INGREDIENTS: —1-1/2 oz. Angelisco Tequila Blanco or your favorite blanco or mescal —3/4 oz. blood orange liquor (combine 1 cup sweet vermouth, 6 oz. blood orange juice and 3 oz. Campari) —1/2 oz. agave syrup (3 parts agave, 1 part water) —1/2 oz. lemon juice —1/4 oz. Liquid Alchemist Ginger Syrup (or make your own with 4 parts sugar, 2 parts ginger juice and 1 part water)

The cocktail menu at the new Chulita restaurant in Venice focuses on tequila and mescal, spirits that beautifully complement the restaurant’s botanas y mezcales, or Mexican drinking food. This blood orange margarita is about balance and roundness, the interplay of tart (blood orange), bitter (Campari) and sweet (sweet vermouth). It is also an ambitious drink to create at home, requiring you to make at least one simple syrup, and to concoct the blood orange liquor. A better idea might be to stop in at Chulita’s, on your way to or from LAX, take a seat on the street-facing patio and enjoy California-style modern Mexican dishes like squash blossom quesadillas, beef cheek tacos and a ceviche with a jalapeño-fueled kick.

A Sweet Welcome for LeBron James from the InterContinental Los Angeles

THE TAHOE CONFERENCE CENTER HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.

WHEN THE CULINARY TEAM AT THE InterContinental Los Angeles Century City learned that LeBron James was a fan of Fruity Pebbles cereal, they knew they had the ingredients for a unique way to welcome the basketball great to Los Angeles and the LA Lakers. Bar Manager Scott Allen created a Fruity Pebble Martini, available at Copper Lounge, while pastry chef Gail Romulo whipped up Fruity Pebbles Layer Cake (available with 48-hour notice at the signature restaurant Mari). The 363-room hotel offers guests many other amenities, including complimentary use of a Tesla Model X car service for jaunts to nearby spots, including the Westfield Century City shopping mall, and a 24-hour fitness center with steam room, outdoor pool and sundeck. With 16,650 square feet of meeting space, including the Grand Salon Ballroom, Glass Lounge and Outdoor Garden, and 13 breakout rooms, the InterContinental Los Angeles can accommodate groups of all sizes for meetings and special events. intercontinentallosangeles.com

ince 1922, Granlibakken Tahoe has operated as a retreat center and resort just south of Tahoe City on the lake’s west side. But while it might be “Old Tahoe,” Granlibakken is in no way stuck in time. Its 160 rooms, in an array of buildings sprawled over 74 forested acres, range from standard, hotel-style units to studios, multibedroom condominiums, dorm rooms and stand-alone executive lodges with multiple bedrooms and suites, full kitchens and private meeting spaces all under one roof. Conference facilities are extensive, encompassing 16,000 square feet of dining, meeting and exhibit space to accommodate groups of 10-500, plus large outdoor decks and lawns, tennis and pool complexes, a day spa, a ski and sledding hill, a ropes course and hiking trails leading directly from the property into the mountains above. Granlibakken attracts a diverse clientele ranging from scientific, academic and tech groups to family and class reunions, corporate retreats, yoga getaways, sports camps and weddings. The majority of conferences take place on weekdays, while the resort rocks and rolls with individual travelers on weekends and in winter. A hot buffet breakfast is included in the rates year-round, and all-inclusive meeting packages with full catering can be customized and modified according to budget and need. granlibakken.com —Janet Fullwood

TREND REPORT DOING GOOD

Participants in Outward Bound’s City Skyline Challenge rappelled off the 46-story Hilton San Francisco Union Square.

DOING GOOD WHILE GATHERING Hilton San Francisco Union Square is an experienced matchmaker when it comes to CSRs.

WHEN JO LICATA GETS A REQUEST FROM A MEETING GROUP seeking a Corporate Service Responsibility (CSR) project, she replies with a grab bag full of suggestions. As community projects manager for the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, the largest hotel (1,919 rooms) on the West Coast, Licata has been making connections and building outreach programs since she came on board in 1995. With a location on the edge of the Tenderloin, one of San Francisco’s most notorious and misunderstood neighborhoods—one where many residents live in single-room occupancy (SRO) hotels and even on the street— there is no shortage of opportunities to help those in need.

14

CAM+E

| WINTER 2019

Interest in doing so has grown in recent years as companies have begun to incorporate service into their events. “Hilton Hotels is really leading the way in hospitality by incorporating some kind of CSR in most every social client event they hold,” Licata says. “It’s very rewarding that more and more

companies are determined to give back and I’m happy that I can help them.” Licata says she likes to give companies a choice of helping different organizations that support different populations. “I will give them maybe five choices,” she says. “These are organizations like Episcopal Services, St. Anthony’s, Hamilton Family House, Boys and Girls Clubs, Glide Memorial Methodist Church—all places with national and sometimes international reputations and followings.” The Hilton can also help facilitate volunteer work with neighborhood agencies. For example, Licata connected a group of mortgage lenders to a

nearby senior center for an afternoon of giving. Popular projects include assembling hygiene kits, filling backpacks with school supplies, putting together welcome kits for hospitalized children and preparing food boxes for distribution at neighborhood churches assisting marginalized populations. Not all groups have time for an off-site project, and not all nonprofits can accommodate them even if they do, Licata notes. “Time is precious, and when a group comes in and has only a small window of time, say before or after a reception, we find a teambuilding/CSR component for them to do on-site.” For example, OneHope, a sustainable winery in Napa set up as an enterprise to raise awareness and funding for charitable and social causes, did an in-house collection event tagged to Hilton’s Global Month of Service last July. “I had heard about the Hilton Union Square’s sustainable and green efforts and was introduced to Jo to see how our company could support while on-site,” says Amanda Lamberti, director of OneHope Foundation. “Our conference was held at the hotel and our attendees and home office staff—about 230 people—brought socks, hygiene products, diapers and jeans. We collected it during the three days of the conference and turned it over to Jo to donate.” Socks were donated to Project Homeless Connect, hygiene products to San Francisco City Impact, disposable diapers to Prenatal Homeless Clinic and Hamilton Families, and jeans to Swords to Ploughshares and The Gubbio Project. Meeting planners themselves have an opportunity to participate in community projects, too, with an annual event that Hilton hosts for loyal customers in the Bay Area. The most recent gathering was held at International Smoke, a popular San Francisco restaurant, where attendees assembled hygiene kits for Clean the World, a foundation that distributes recycled hotel soaps and other amenities to people in need. “Our company is committed to traveling with purpose and giving back to the local community,” says Dana Hahn, Hilton Hotels’ manager of special events, who organized the project. When there’s not even time for active volunteering, Licata can direct groups on opportunities to make a meaningful donation instead. Sometimes, groups, or a number of attendees, are eager to learn more about the Tenderloin neighborhood. For that, Licata sends them to the new

Tenderloin Museum, which tells the district’s story through exhibits, programs and walking tours. “We have contracts with many tech companies, some of which mandate their employees to come here, and we also get a lot of tourists,” says Del Seymour, the unofficial “mayor” of the district and co-chair of the city’s Local Homeless Coordinating Board. “The tours are very balanced—you see the good, the bad and the ugly.” There are other less direct ways to give back. For the past couple of years, the Hilton and other San Francisco hotels have been working with Outward Bound California, which has had a presence in the city for a decade. “We work with schools, nonprofit and corporate groups,” says Emma Rapp, director of communication and outreach. “Changing lives through challenge and discovery is what we’re about” she says. “We all need to get out of our comfort zone rather than be bubble wrapped all the time.” Despite the organization’s reputation for hardcharging wilderness programs, not all involve physical challenge; team development and challengeday programs for professionals, for example, might take place in Golden Gate Park and involve games that build rapport and hone problem-solving skills. Proceeds go to support scholarships for local youth and veterans. The largest fundraiser of the year, called City Skyline Challenge, sees participants rappelling off the Hilton’s 46-story tower. This year’s event attracted 130 people and raised $280,000.

Doing good while building a team: The 2018 City Skyline Challenge raised $280,000 for scholarships and other programs for underrepresented youth and communities.

These sublime steakhouses are plush spots to gather a group. TRENDS MAY COME AND GO, but the appeal of a perfectly cooked steak endures. These eight steakhouses all offer beautiful, spacious dining rooms perfect for sharing a timeless porterhouse or filet mignon with a group of friends or colleagues. And those who aren’t meat lovers will find options aplenty at each of these spots.

sive credentials: after attending culinary school in Italy, he continued to learn his craft at two Michelinstarred restaurants. Herbs, flowers, and, yes, beef fat are elements of the lavish cocktails. World-class wines and rare whiskeys add to the allure of this high-end eatery. Tracey Rice, director of special events, says, “The tri-level space filled with glass, steel and brick gives Alexander’s a modern and contemporary feel, and the hospitality is some of the best in the city.” Alexander’s opulence is perhaps best encapsulated in its glass-enclosed aging room, where cuts of meat hang like fine art in a gallery. Groups can rent out the large dining room, the Wine Library, the 25-seat Board Room or the semi-private mezzanine.

Baltaire; Los Angeles Brentwood’s Baltaire captures a modern California vibe with its naturally lit indoor/outdoor space while maintaining all the trimmings you’ve come to expect: cushy leather chairs and banquettes, a mirror-backed two-sided bar and even a fireplace. Baltaire is renowned for its Miyazaki A5 wagyu strip loin, but don’t overlook the Snake River Farm rib eye filet and the 35-day dry-aged côte de boeuf. To get things started, savor the tableside Greek salad tossed before your eyes. Sommelier Melanie Kaman has curated a wine list featuring 25 by-the-glass selections from both New and Old World labels. Designed with groups in mind, Baltaire can handle as many as 48 guests in the private Sequoia Room, which sits next to the 3,000-bottle wine cellar, and up to 90 guests on the patio.

Born & Raised; San Diego Located in San Diego’s superhot Little Italy neighborhood, the two-story Born & Raised delivers style with a Great Gatsby hipster vibe. The décor here is influenced by both art deco and midcentury modern themes. Enjoy the old school tableside service with martinis, Caesar salad and Steak Diane prepared in front of you. Other offerings include the Japanese wagyu, buttery porterhouse, Robuchon mashed potatoes and mushroom fricassee. The open rooftop second story offers great views and accommodates up to 60 people, while the main dining room downstairs can be bought out for groups of up to 100.

Mastro’s Steakhouse and Mastro’s Ocean Club; Beverly Hills and Malibu The Mastro’s collection of restaurants is well known for delivering a sumptuous dining experience. From the food and cocktails to the décor and service, everything is polished and near impeccable. At Mastro’s Ocean Club in Malibu, feast on dishes like the bone-in Kansas City steak, a rack of lamb or twin lobster tails. The Piano Bar lounge sets a swanky atmosphere nightly, offering a breathtaking ocean view and spectacular sunsets. Private dining rooms are available and the entire space can be reserved exclusively for an event of up to 190 people. In Beverly Hills, Mastro’s Steakhouse offers a posh supper club setting, and private event options for 25-500 guests.

Mr. Lyons; Palm Springs As is fitting for its location, Mr. Lyons Steakhouse embodies desert glamour. The restaurant began in 1945 as Lyons English Grill. New ownership, a 2015 face lift and a tweaked name have made it enticing to a younger crowd while still welcoming longtime customers with enduring dishes like prime rib, shrimp cocktail and Beef Wellington. During its remodel, owner Tara Lazar created a new hidden bar, Seymour’s, “named for my father, who was very bohemian.” Still retaining some Rat Pack vibes, the décor of Mr. Lyons features green velvet booths, black and white chevron-patterned marble floors and burnished wood aplenty. Two private dining rooms are available to rent for groups.

Nick + Stef’s; DTLA One hallmark of a great American city is a beloved downtown steakhouse. In Los Angeles, that place is Nick & Stef’s. Executive chef Megan Logan helms a kitchen that excels with various grass-fed cuts, as well as dry-aging techniques and Certified Angus beef. The hits at this luxe steakhouse include a 28-day dry-aged Tomahawk rib chop and an A5 Japanese wagyu, regarded by many as the world’s finest beef. The wine list celebrates more than 500 labels. Nick + Stef’s private dining rooms, one of which includes a sweeping patio, are as modern as

the art in the museums of this Bunker Hill neighborhood, and accommodate 12-100 guests.

Selanne Steak Tavern; Laguna Beach There’s something very special about dining in a historic house. One noteworthy example is Selanne Steak Tavern, occupying a reimagined 1934 coastal mansion on South Coast Highway. Named for co-owner and Hall of Fame hockey player Teemu Selanne, this steakhouse supports local farms and fisheries that engage in sustainable and humane practices. Chef Joshua Severson puts his own distinctive twist on contemporary American steakhouse favorites, including aged prime meats cut to order. Herbs picked directly from the garden are blended into sauces and enhance the signature craft cocktails. The wine list, which has won two Best of Awards of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine, showcases the breadth and depth of California’s wine regions, along with the wines of Burgundy and numerous other regions. Says coowner Kevin Pratt, “Our historic Laguna Beach cottage lends charm to any event and allows meeting planners to select from a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, including the elegant upstairs dining room, an outdoor veranda, wine room and the handsome tavern bar area.”

Visit Napa Valley

San Francisco Travel Association

visitnapavalley.com | 707.226.5813

It was a year of immense challenge in Napa Valley as the October 2017 wildfires that burned hundreds of thousands of acres in three counties precipitated a slump in leisure and business tourism. The fires did not deter new growth, however, and Visit Napa Valley has been proactive nationwide in spreading the word that vineyards and businesses on the valley floor experienced little or no impact. Five new hotels, seven new museum exhibits, a new film festival, a new winery, 12 new tasting rooms and four new restaurants have opened since the blazes. Visit Napa Valley stands poised to curate a full-sensory, tailored attendee experience in the legendary wine region. Runners-up: Greater Palm Springs Oasis; Monterey County CVB

San Francisco has been shattering tourism records year after year, with visitor volume hitting 25.5 million in 2017. Nevertheless, the San Francisco Travel convention sales team offers complimentary hotel and site selection for groups booking as few as 10 room nights, along with attendance-building tools, promotional materials and other services for groups of any size. A revamped Moscone Convention Center is boosting business even more, while four new hotels, all with rooftop venues, opened in the central city in 2018, adding to overall room count. Diversity is the name of the game in this city of distinct neighborhoods, and with beautiful scenery, out-of-the-box venues, and an unbeatable food

scene, San Francisco Travel is never short of suggestions to help attendees make the most of their visit. Runners-up: San Diego Tourism Authority; Los Angeles Tourism & Visitors Bureau BEST CONFERENCE/CONVENTION CENTER UNDER 100,000 SQUARE FEET

Small or big, they have a space that fits your need for winefocused educational events. The hospitality staff are artful masters in setting the stage, providing creative ideas, and arranging every last detail. Meeting planners danced around construction and restructured their gatherings for years while a $551 million expansion of San Francisco’s convention center, with attendant neighborhood improvements, was underway. The ribbon was cut on Jan. 3, bringing the city’s vibrant convention scene back to full force. And no wonder planners love it: the expansion brings the center’s total exhibit space to more than 504,000 square feet of continuous space, including 157,000 square feet of flexible meeting space in the Moscone North and South wings. A new ballroom, multiple terraces with skyline views, the ability to create up to 82 meeting rooms, and two pedestrian bridges are among the many other improvements. Plus, the entire center is LEED Platinum Certified. And the location couldn’t be better, with 19,545 hotel rooms within eight blocks and more on the way.

Event venues include an open-sided barn that can be dressed up for sit-down dinners, event lawns, a wedding garden that is tented in winter and a patio overlooking the Tyge William Cellars vineyard.

front meeting space and 1,100 hotel rooms, the Marina is equally appealing to high-end corporate business programs as it is to tech industry powerhouses that want a laid-back but trendy meeting destination. Traditional meeting space takes a back seat to creative waterside options, such as outdoor reception lawns with 360-degree harbor views or a rooftop ballroom with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the coast. No visit to the Marina is complete without some time on a boat, and having your opening reception, client party or seminar at sea on a private luxury yacht is the perfect way to make a splash with your next corporate function. Marina del Rey’s plentiful recreation options make for exciting team-building and pre/post-function entertainment. Treat your delegates to a parasailing or sportfishing excursion, group kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, a dining or cocktail harbor cruise, beachside biking, water yoga or a sailing regatta.

With Marina del Rey as a home base for your group event, you’re within a short drive to LA’s popular tourist attractions— the world-famous Venice Beach and Santa Monica are right next door. And after a busy day, there’s no better place to come back to than any of the Marina’s six waterfront hotels, all of which offer sparkling harbor views. Meeting planners can save up to $2,000 by booking a program or event in the Marina. The Marina del Rey CVB offers a special incentive for groups with more than 25 rooms.

This island oasis, just 22 miles from LA, is packed with amenities and adventures for unforgettable meetings. BY BARBARA BECKLEY

o close and yet so far! This is the magic of Santa Catalina Island—or Catalina, as it’s widely known—that attracts groups from Google to Otis Elevators and Honda to the Milken Institute to its quaint little towns, sunny beaches and green, mountainous interior. “Catalina is part of Greater LA, but you feel like you’re a thousand miles away,” says Rudy Alvarez, Catalina Island Company’s director of sales. “Catalina is unique and different from anything else in Southern California.” Floating 22 miles off Greater Los Angeles’ coast, the 76-square-mile island is packed with delegate-pleasing meeting facilities, hotels and group adventures. Two tiny towns—bustling 2.7-square-mile Avalon on the east end and laid-back Two Harbors, population approximately 150, on the west end—provide “city” pleasures. The rest of the island is protected and undeveloped. It’s also a meeting planner’s best-kept secret. “I didn’t know this existed!” is the most frequent comment from first-time attendees, according to Alvarez. But once groups discover Catalina, they tend to return.

30

| WINTER 2019

SMALL IS GOOD “This is one of the best meeting we’ve ever been to,” declared Meeting Professionals International Southern California Chapter delegates following their March 2018 Catalina gathering, as Alvarez recalls. “Catalina is fresh and new,” the MPI organizers noted. Liz Schleder, marketing associate and event coordinator for Huntington Beach-based Bartco Lighting, has brought groups to Catalina twice a year for the past five years. “My attendees tell me they love the charm of the community and that they can walk everywhere in Avalon,” she says. With some 800 guest rooms, Catalina can compete with the capacity of a mega hotel, with key distinctions, Alvarez says. “We’re not a building. We’re an island. Groups regularly use four to seven hotels. Everyone has a bit of a different hotel experience, but then they go outside and share the exact same experiences.” Only a few hotels have meeting space—a benefit that actually adds to the island’s allure, notes Alvarez. “Think of Front Street as the hotel lobby, and the waterfront as the corridor to all your meeting space. We always have transportation on hand, but attendees hardly

use it. They prefer to walk along the beachfront to their meeting destination.” The size of groups gathering in Catalina varies, says Lisa Lavelle, operations manager for Catalina Tours, an island-based destination management company. She’s coordinated meetings from eight to 140 attendees. Alvarez has done programs for up to 400 guests, and events up for as many as 1,000, with attendees staying from a half-day lunch to two or three days. No matter the gathering’s length or agenda, be it a retreat, team-building or sales meetings, the time is generally divided between meetings and play, Lavelle says. “Catalina is like a staycation on a California island,” enthuses Schleder. She uses Catalina as a wow-factor day trip during four-day business meetings in Huntington Beach. She begins the program with the Avalon Tasting & Walking Tour, the Jeep Eco Tour or the Discover the Casino Tour. “In three hours, attendees can see so much, they know where they want to go during free time.” The day trip ends with dinner in groups of about 10 delegates each at Avalon restaurants like the Lobster Trap and Coyote

NEW AND EXCITING Hotel revamps, new attractions, new meeting space, and new shops and restaurants are transforming Catalina into a “worldclass experience,” says Alvarez. The historic 94-room Hotel Atwater in Avalon is set to re-open in mid-2019 as a bright and sophisticated property following a major revamp. Look for a new airy lobby for cocktails, an elevator, a new restaurant, 740 square feet of new function space and retooled rooms and suites with custom furnishings and expanded bathrooms. The brand-new Trailhead Visitor Center by Catalina Island Conservancy is expected to open late in 2018 in downtown Avalon. The contemporary-style, multilevel structure will be Catalina’s first LEED-certified building. The Center will house exhibits and educational spaces showcasing the story of Catalina’s natural history, wilderness and beauty, as well

as a small café, and will provide information on island hiking, biking and camping. New in 2015, Catherine’s Terrace at Descanso Beach brought meetings to the beach, with a bright and breezy great room featuring a fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean, and an oceanview canopied balcony, for groups of 20-200 participants. And in Two Harbors, the Harbor Sands at Two Harbor upped the group experience with new stylishly rustic furnished palapas for up to eight people, beachfront lounge chairs, and an enhanced group picnic area that can accommodate hundreds. Also new in 2017, the Catalina Aerial Adventure and Descanso Drop Tower in Descanso Canyon, added to the outdoor thrills. Wilbur used the aerial adventure for a sky-high team-building session when she brought a group from the Milken Institute to Catalina.

MEETING AND EVENT VENUES Unique and beautiful venues for up to 1,400 people are located throughout Catalina. In Avalon, the landmark Catalina Casino Ballroom is the largest contiguous historic ballroom in the country, with 29,000 square feet of pillarless space for up to 1,400 attendees, and on-site catering. The Descanso Beach Club features an event lawn, with a stage overlooking the

ocean; a private beachside setting with two fire pits; luxury cabanas; and facilities for cocktails, music and dining on the sand for groups of up to 1,200. For smaller gatherings, Overlook Hall, built in 1929 as a small church, and repurposed and renovated in 2010 as an event space, accommodates up to 125 attendees. Its upstairs Sanctuary has 1,200 square feet of open space with beamed ceilings, a raised stage, and an outdoor deck facing the ocean. The Catalina Country Club, a Spanish Mediterranean-style building adjacent to the golf course, welcomes events of up to 120. The M Event Venue by Zest Catering & Events, Inc., next to the Hotel Metropole, accommodates several dozen guests. For outdoorsy soirees, the Catalina Island Conservancy offers several spectacular event locations from the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden, to dramatic seafront clifftops and secluded oceanfront coves. Many of Avalon’s restaurants welcome groups, including El Galleon Steakhouse, Mi Casita Mexican Restaurant, Antonio’s Pizzeria & Cabaret and Steven’s Steakhouse. In Two Harbors, the Harbor Reef Restaurant is ideal for groups of up to 100, and the scenic outdoor spaces at Harbor Sands welcome larger events.

Joe’s before departing for the mainland. So, what do the Catalina pros want firsttime planners to know? “Catalina is easy to package,” says Schleder. “It’s easy to reserve ferry tickets and upgrade attendees to the Catalina Express Commodore Lounge; easy to arrange tours and easy to set up meals at the restaurants.” Lavelle adds a tip: Book six to 12 months out.

GROUP ACTIVITIES From scenic drives to hiking excursions, sailing adventures to foodie tours, rental golf carts and electric bikes to spa sessions, Catalina has something for every group’s interests. Favorite tours for meeting groups, according to Lavelle, include the Avalon Scenic Tour, the Jeep Eco-Tour, Avalon Tasting & Walking Tour and the Catalina Happy Hour Tour. As a DMC, Lavelle’s company can arrange custom packages and group team activities on land and sea. It wouldn’t be Catalina without water sports. Groups can enjoy tours to Frog Rock, kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals, sightseeing on a glassbottom boat, semi-sub excursions, parasail rides and Jet Ski rentals. For group sails, Afishinados Charters has its Catallac power catamaran for up to 49 people, with a sound system, a beer and wine bar, a food-service area for catering and a large screen TV suitable for slide shows. Island Spa Catalina welcomes groups to enjoy its 15,000 square feet of pampering including nine treatment rooms and suites, a café and second-floor relaxation deck with ocean views. High adventure group favorites include the Zip Line Eco Tour, and Catalina Aerial Adventure.

HOTELS WITH MEETING SPACE When hotel meeting space is important, several hotels offer excellent facilities. The 75-room Holiday

Inn Resort Catalina Island is the island’s only full-service property and offers one of the largest meeting spaces at more than 5,000 square feet of naturally-lit inside and outside function space in four event venues. It also features the Seaport Bistro at Holiday Inn Resort, an outdoor pool and a European-style day spa. The Hotel Metropole overlooks the beach and features 52 guest rooms and several event venues for up to 150 attendees: the newly renovated Beach House Suite for small gatherings; the Conference Room; the M Event Venue by Zest Catering & Events, Inc.; and the outdoor Metropole Marketplace. Events with panoramic city and harbor views for up to 40 people are available on the Hotel St. Lauren’s rooftop sundeck, along with two function rooms for up to 25 people each. And props to the city of Santa Rosa, too, which landed the top spot in all of the U.S. on “most craft breweries and wineries per capita.”

a chapter president and member of the MPI Foundation Board of Directors. CAM+E: You’ve been a member of MPI since 1983. How will that inform your new role? SH: I started in banquets, events and catering, delivering meetings on the operations side, and then moved into the sales area. I think this broad experience really helps me relate to the meetings market. And,

CAM+E: What do you see as the biggest challenge for the meetings industry? SH: Happily, what had seemed like a big challenge—namely, that teleconferencing and videoconferencing was going to adversely affect the meetings industry— didn’t play out. It turns out, that people do not want to give up face-to-face interaction. You can’t replace that in a digital world. That leaves us with the more exciting challenge of creating new experiences for groups. Iron skillet competitions and the like are getting a little stale. One successful new experience we’ve introduced at The Resort at Pelican Hill is “Plein Air and Prosecco.” Plein air, or “in the open air” painting, is very much a Southern California art form. So we set attendees up with easels and paints at an outdoor event area overlooking the Pacific at sunset and give them some instruction. Turns out, plein air, the Pacific and prosecco go very well together.

CAM+E: How are your properties evolving to meet the needs of the meetings market? SH: One thing we’re doing is introducing virtual reality (VR) technology into the site-inspection process. At IMEX last year, we brought along several pairs of goggles and when planners stopped by our booth, we were able to transport them to Orange County to see our meeting spaces set up for special events. It conveyed in a very realistic way what we can deliver. It’s pretty slick. More importantly, it enhances and simplifies efficiency for meeting professionals in determining whether a hotel they haven’t seen is a good candidate for their needs. We can send planers a pair of VR glasses and they can sit in their office in Chicago or Washington, D.C., and walk through our hotel meeting space. We’re also moving toward making keyless entry available for meeting planners. That means attendees can use their smartphones to bypass the front desk and go right to their guest rooms. It eliminates a pain point for planners, long lines at registration when attendees are all arriving at the same time.
