The Death of Commonplace Swag

» WHEN MANY CHOOSE SWAG to hand out at meetings and events, meeting planners often select, frankly, tchotchkes—branded pens, bags, or coffee mugs. But according to Lou Elliott-Cysewski, co-founder and chief innovation officer of Coolperx—which develops and sells sustainable, branded merchandise—a mere 21% of branded or promotional items are kept for any length of time after an event. That low percentage suggests that by handing out relatively mundane swag, most are not meeting goals of increasing brand awareness and favorability.

To combat this, buy sustainable swag, which is not only good for the environment, but also for the well-being of your brand. Sustainable swag also has societal and economic benefits, as well as high perceived value. Consider thinking of sustainability as causing little harm to the environment both in manufacturing and in the post-conference life of the swag, having high ethical standards in terms of working conditions and business practices of the manufacturer, and giving the impression of high value, quality, and desirability.

If you think about swag this way, you could also consider providing a few highquality microfleece jackets to give away to several attendees rather than an enormous number of cheap, branded pens to everyone. Quality apparel brands such as Patagonia, The North Face, Columbia, Champion, and Under Armour all produce sustainable items. This approach can also be cost-effective, especially if you are not gifting something to every attendee. Price out both options, and see what makes the most sense to you.

Consumers are more likely to do business with a brand they think has demonstrated commitment to the betterment of society. The important thing is to keep your eye on the goal of increasing brand awareness and favorability when considering swag options. Will a cheap coffee mug accomplish your goal, or would a higher-quality item with high perceived value better serve your intent?

FUN-SIZED EVENTS

Micro-events prove that bigger is not always better.

When thinking about events, consider a micro-approach to enhance and encourage interactions among attendees.

Condensed in size and scope, micro-events help foster meaningful relationships through their intimate, tightknit settings and frequency. In addition, planning micro-events can be cost-effective due to their smaller scale.

To better accommodate greater connections, swap out a once-a-year occasion for a collection of smaller, hyperfocused meetings throughout the year—breaking up what would normally be one large event into smaller affairs scattered on a monthly or quarterly basis. Another option is to schedule regular minibonding events to keep attendees engaged throughout the year.

One organization that has become an expert in this style is the National Association for Catering and Events (NACE). Meeting monthly, NACE’s networking get-togethers are a way for eventindustry leaders to get involved, learn more, and feel inspired on a more regular basis.

Discover innovative ways to create the best captivating experience for your attendees with these three approaches.

Gaming is an immersive way to have fun, make lasting memories, and learn from one another. Consider activities such as an escape room, Topgolf, or a baking class where everyone can get involved, chat, and work together to accomplish something outside the office walls.

Themed events add more than just fun flair— they also make the occasion more marketable to potential attendees, clients, or sponsors. Showcase your creativity by fusing the theme into not only the decor, but also the menu, dress code, and overall message for the event. For ideas, consider a whimsical tea party lunch, a modern outdoor picnic, or a “Great Gatsby”-themed cocktail hour for a spirited gathering.

Workshops can provide a beneficial incentive for attendees. More specifically, they are a way for individuals to explore trends, apply new techniques, and interact with others with the same interests. These educational sessions can be broken down into a quarterly series to showcase different parts of a whole concept. In addition, they can provide a way for guests to grow and learn together at the same pace, with the same effective resources.

Five Trade Show Booth Ideas for Every Budget

In case you are lost on how to create an attractive booth, we’ve got you covered. BY

With increasing competitiveness and the continuous balancing of corporate budgets, firms attempt to differentiate themselves at trade shows without breaking the bank. Budget restrictions can be especially challenging for a new exhibitor or a start-up. However, it is a fallacy that only high-priced trade show booths can leave a lasting impact. With creative design and planning, a lowcost display has the potential to become a crowd-puller.

On the other hand, choosing the ideal display is not the most straightforward task, especially if it’s your first time at a trade show. When thinking about concepts to engage potential consumers, evaluate your thoughts about what you want your booth to accomplish and compare them with your budget to start considering the best options.

RENT A BOOTH

If you are looking for options but have a limited budget, it’s better to rent a booth. When renting, you only pay a fraction of the amount spent on purchasing one. The expense of maintaining your booth after the show is also eliminated with a rental alternative. If the show is not local, then renting is the best alternative because it will spare you money and effort on shipping—and you won’t have to worry about damage. In addition, the rental booth provider assists with transporting, installing, and dismantling at a nominal rate, thereby saving time and labor.

POP-UP DISPLAYS

This is one of the most common approaches to having a presence at trade shows. Pop-up displays are simple to put together because all you have to do is use magnetic strands

to attach picture panels to the frames; your work is done in no time and leaves valuable time to network. Since the displays are lightweight and sturdy, they can also be easily stored, packaged, and transported.

FOLDABLE BOOKSHELVES

Placing the idea of a few aesthetically appealing, foldable bookshelves in your trade show toolbox will help your booth shine, even on a limited budget. These bookshelves don’t necessarily have to accommodate books. You can place company products or props on them to give your booth a customized look. The bookshelves are reasonably priced and provide a large display surface to help captivate attendees during an event.

FLOOR CARPETS

Rent a customizable carpet to best showcase products and services in your booth. This personalized touch will help you stand out from other trade show booths and isn’t terribly expensive.

INEXPENSIVE ACTIVITIES

If you have a limited budget but want to engage viewers, hold product demonstrations at the booth, conduct games and quizzes with inexpensive gift items or baskets to stimulate audience interest, or use 3D or light-diffraction glasses as a marketing tool. Another simple technique is to create short videos and rent a screen to turn a static booth into something more interesting.

Raise a Pint to a Good Event

These Minnesota breweries offer hospitality to match their great pours.

» SOMETIMES YOU JUST want to unwind at a casual venue with your colleagues. Luckily, Minnesota is home to 226 craft breweries, and when you include the brewpubs and non-craft breweries, the number is even higher. To get a head start on your search, here are five of Minnesota Meetings + Events magazine’s favorites.

FORAGER BREWERY

Rochester

Forager is a brewpub known for a wide beer selection, in-house hard seltzers, guest wines and cocktails, and a scratch menu with ingredients sourced from local farms in southeastern Minnesota.

Pick from the library (for up to 16 people) and the pantry (the barrel-aging beer room and gallery, for up to 50 people). Both are private spaces with AV options, but if the weather is nice, opt for the patio. “It is just a cool, funky vibe that is in here,” says Barb Depman, general manager and events coordinator. “And then I think we have good food, and people love Forager beer.” foragerbrewery.com

FULTON BREWING

Minneapolis

Fulton, the city’s first taproom, is in the North Loop. Its charming patio leads to an airy interior featuring the private Garagery (for up to 30 people) and the semiprivate Brew Room (for up to 70). If you have a bigger party, you can rent the entire Taproom.

“Taprooms are designed to be gathering places, and we have seriously hosted all sorts of events from quarterly corporate sales meetings to baby showers, wedding receptions, bingo, comedy nights, birthday parties, celebrations of life—you name it,” says Jill Drum, general manager of the Taproom.

MEET + EAT Breweries

Fulton’s in-house catering includes build-your-own-taco bars and buffet options, and when adding in the brewery’s beer and hard seltzers, everyone will be ready to cheers to a good event. After all, as Drum says, “Fulton is as casual and inviting as your neighbor’s garage where you might take a break from the day and share a story and a pint.” fultonbeer.com

LIFT BRIDGE BREWING CO. Stillwater

Stillwater is a favorite spot for locals, and out-of-towners will enjoy it just as much—even more when they are sipping Lift Bridge’s beer, hard seltzers, and craft sodas. Rent out the whole brewery or opt for the private production area for 20 to 200 people. The space can be transformed with just a few decorations, but its industrial feel and picture window make for a unique backdrop.

Lift Bridge can work with any caterer, and food trucks visit regularly. Brad Glynn, co-owner and vice president of marketing, adds, “We have done some private [brewery] tour-type situations

as well, with some food pairings that we work with the local deli on.”

And despite its proximity to Stillwater’s quaint downtown, there is a ton of free parking—perfect for bringing people together. liftbridgebrewery.com

SAINT PAUL BREWING St. Paul

Saint Paul Brewing is nestled in the historic Hamm Building minutes from downtown St. Paul—and it is full of nooks and crannies that turn into semiprivate meeting spaces. This flexibility allows for parties between 15 and 180, but when thinking ahead to the summer, look at its (rentable) 7,500-squarefoot, dog-friendly patio in the ruins of an 1860s stable.

“It is a nice juxtaposition of historical space with a kind of repurposed, eclectic menagerie of furniture and art with lots of plants,” says Director of Operations Tony Perella. “It is incredibly cozy, and the lighting is nice and warm.”

In-house catering features wood-fired pizzas, intricate sandwiches and burgers, and charcuterie, as well as craft root beer.

Full rentals have free reign of the audio and visual offerings, and hybrid events are also a go, as Perella already has one livestream event under his belt. stpaulbrewing.com

SURLY BREWING CO.

Minneapolis

Roughly in between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul, Surly’s destination brewery is perpetually busy with a large beer garden, acclaimed pizzeria, and iconic pours. For parties from 40 to 175, its 2,400-square-foot Scheid Hall is the way to go. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the brewery on one side of the hall—accenting any presentations given by the employees—and the other windows overlook the Twin Cities.

“My mantra is, as far as Surly events go, [we are] a one-stop shop for all event needs,” says Event Manager Katie Kilian. “Not only do we provide a wonderful, amazing, energized space, and elegant, industrial design, our culinary menus also can be customized. We also can provide a lot of decor here, from linens to table runners to choose from.” surlybrewing.com

Casinos & Gaming

Across the United States, casinos furnish planners with one-stop shopping for their meeting and event needs.

Casinos Do It All

At the beginning of 1978, casinos could only be found in Nevada—no other state had legal gaming. On May 26, 1978, Resorts Casino Hotel opened in Atlantic City, New Jersey, a year and a half after the state’s voters approved a referendum legalizing gambling in the city to bolster the economy in the area.

A year later, the Seminole Tribe opened the first Native American-owned casino in the United States, the Seminole Classic Casino Hollywood in Hollywood, Florida. Initially a bingo hall, it soon expanded to include gaming machines and poker. During the 1980s, as Native American casinos spread, several state governments pursued court cases to try to shut them down. The tribes argued in court that their status as sovereign nations (per an 1831 U.S. Supreme Court decision classifying Native American tribes as “domestic dependent” nations) made them exempt from state laws against gambling. Finally, in

1987, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in California v. Cabazon Band of Mission Indians (480 U.S. 202 [1987]) that gambling on tribal lands did not fall under the legal jurisdiction of the states. The next year, Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which allowed tribes to open casinos on tribal land in states that already permitted legalized gambling. By 1996, 25 states had legal casinos.

Around the same time period, the Mirage opened in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1989. This ground-breaking casino resort was the largest hotel in the world when it opened, commencing the era of casinos making money through nongambling activities, including, at The Mirage, shows featuring white tigers and the magic of Siegfried & Roy, a volcano, and an aquarium. The idea was to make customers feel like they already struck it rich with a Polynesian theme, ostentatious opulence, and free food. Built by Steve Wynn and today owned by Hard Rock International, the Mirage fundamentally changed the Las Vegas Strip.

Within a few years, more spectacular, themed resorts appeared up and down the Strip and nearby, including Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, and Paris Las Vegas, both owned by Caesars Entertainment.

The latest style of casino resorts, the rise of Native American gaming, and the spread of gambling across the country ushered in a new era of casinos that provided the perfect setting for gatherings and conventions of all varieties.

Today, 44 states (all except Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Utah) have casino gaming resorts that cater to meetings and events. Almost anywhere in the United States you wish to meet, there is likely a casino resort that can fulfill—and exceed—all your event needs.

The Cash Cow

From slot machines and blackjack tables to horse races and bingo, there are a variety of ways to gamble. As a means of entertainment for some, casinos are an unconventional-yet-effective way to generate immense revenue, some of which is funneled back into society.

Of course, the success of a casino depends on gamblers’ confidence in their luck and their willingness to wager. Apparently, people are indeed increasingly confident in their abilities as, according to the American Gaming Association, gambling revenue has risen 21% since 2019, reaching a lofty record of $53 billion in 2022. Nearly $30 billion of that revenue came from 460 tribal casinos across 28 states. With so much money funneling into casinos, taxes on casino revenue are a primary financial resource supporting state and local programs.

Gaming wasn’t always a catalyst for societal advancement. Following the 1929 stock market crash and the construction of Hoover Dam beginning in 1931, Nevada’s economy was in dire need of economic stimulation. Operating as a small railroad town, Las Vegas was soon gaining traction from the infiltration of construction workers moving to Boulder City, 25 miles down the road, to build the dam. Gambling trips to Las Vegas became routine for workers. With

increased popularity and a sudden cash flow, Nevada’s government legalized gambling in 1931 to quickly generate funding to restabilize the state’s finances. Gambling was much later legalized in select states across the country.

To regulate the gambling cash flow, state and federal governments intervened in both commercial and tribal gaming. For tribal gaming, the U.S. Congress passed the Indian Gaming

Regulatory Act of 1988 to create a legal basis for the operation of casinos (in states that allowed gaming within their borders). The tax revenue from these establishments helped fuel steady employment, provide consistent cash flow for reservations, and create lively regional attractions. Some tribes with state compacts pay fees based on their revenue to state and local governments. As for commercial casinos, many states

implemented taxes based on gross revenue (after winner payouts) to maximize casino money rerouted into state coffers.

To combat a negative backlash over states’ revenue from gambling, 23 out of the 24 commercial gambling states designate a portion of their casino tax revenue to fund research and treatment for gambling addiction, according to the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies in Washington, D.C. Many commercial gaming states also use some of their tax revenue to fund public programs and services, including education, economic development, infrastructure, and the fine arts (anywhere from 20% to 90% of state funding goes toward state art agencies in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, and West Virginia).

For tribes with state compacts, the breakdown of contributions awarded to the state varies based on need. The State of Arizona, for example, allocates 88% of its tribal gaming revenue to infrastructure improvement for schools, trauma and emergency care, wildlife conservation, and tourism. The remaining 12% is distributed to community service and public safety programs in cities and counties of the tribes’ choosing. Though the allocation of funds varies from state to state, the influx of money that filters through casinos provides states with a constant stream of revenue.

At casinos, there is fun to be had by all. Gambling, to some extent, can benefit individuals as a means of entertainment and the potential for winnings. Coming full circle, the money spent can work its way back into their lives through improved services and renovations of sites made possible by casino revenue.

The Green Future of Casinos Is Now

Thirty miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada, among the Joshua trees and greater roadrunners of the Mojave Desert, 323,000 solar panels covering the equivalent of 484 football fields glisten in the sun. This 100-megawatt solar array provides 90% of the electricity for 13 MGM Resorts International casinos and 36,000 hotel rooms in Las Vegas, including ARIA Resort & Casino, MGM Grand Las Vegas, and Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Away from the glittering lights of the Las Vegas Strip, the sunshine collected by these panels spotlight a sustainable future for casinos worldwide.

Many casino properties are making sustainability a priority. Caesars Entertainment repurposes and recycles just about everything at its casinos, including used soap, towels, and dice. Caesars’ hotels also conserve energy by turning off lights and air conditioning in unoccupied rooms. Visitors to Caesars Palace, Flamingo Las Vegas, and Paris Las Vegas who order a glass of Zinfandel are served a vintage directly from a keg rather than a bottle.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides guidelines on its website that focus on green initiatives for tribal casinos, and, certainly, many across the country embrace sustainability. Chumash Casino Resort, operated by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in Santa Barbara County, California, has sharply cut electricity usage in its complexes. The tribe built new facilities in 2004 that included doublewalled insulation, a reflective rooftop, and a wastewater treatment plant that reclaims water; the improvements saved the tribe 18% in energy costs. Similarly, Michigan’s Turtle Creek Casino and Hotel implemented skylights to provide natural light and replace electric lighting as early as 2008, reducing energy use by a stunning 50%.

As MGM Resorts International did outside Las Vegas, many tribal casinos also turn to the sun for energy generation and to efficient lighting for energy conservation. In addition to being the first solar-powered casino in Southern California, Harrah’s Resort Southern California—operated by the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians—has a wastewater treatment plant that generates reclaimed water for cleaning and irrigation, and a biodigester that turns food waste into water. At many casinos, tribal or not, much more efficient LED lights are largely replacing incandescent bulbs, not an insignificant trend given casinos’ tendency to use lights on everything from slot machines to video displays.

Some casinos take measures to improve life for other inhabitants of their region. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in California— with casinos in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, and Cathedral City—partners with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to monitor endangered peninsular bighorn sheep through data collected from high-frequency collars. The Tulalip Tribes in Washington, which run two casinos north of Seattle, operate a salmon hatchery on tribal land that raises and releases 11.5 million juvenile salmon each year.

The tribes—including the Snohomish, Snoqualmie, Skykomish, and other allied bands—also actively manage the habitat of the Salish Sea (including Puget Sound) to support several species of clams, shrimp, and Dungeness crabs.

The sustainability landscape for casinos has evolved dramatically in the last few decades. Many casinos now measure environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria alongside the financial bottom line. Often, casinos see setting ESG goals as essential to saving money and increasing profit. Those that do embrace sustainability will be able to thrive as society evolves toward a greener future.

Natural Wonders and Cultural Riches

Near the headwaters of the Mississippi River, Bemidji is a city with a rich history.

» BEMIDJI IS THE NATURAL JEWEL of Minnesota’s north woods. Situated on the southwestern shore of scenic Lake Bemidji in Beltrami County, the city fuses small-town feel with urban amenities to create the perfect meeting or event location.

Earl LaMaack, visitor lead representative of Bemidji’s Tourist Information Center, emphasizes that the city’s rich, “beautiful scenery; abundant recreation; and inspiring arts and culture

yield countless recreational activities to please every [kind of person, including] anglers, kayakers, canoers, bikers, hikers, skaters, skiers, snowmobilers, and campers. And we are home to numerous state and national forests with approximately 22 parks and 400 fishing lakes within a 25-mile radius.”

THE MISSISSIPPI HEADWATERS Bemidji claims a place of honor with its unique setting close to the mighty

Mississippi River’s source in Itasca State Park. Visitors can hop over the waterway at this iconic spot, which provides an Instagrammable moment.

Bemidji holds the bragging rights as the “First City on the Mississippi River.” In 1888, the Minnesota Historical Society commissioned Jacob Brower to survey the area, proving that Lake Itasca was indeed the Mississippi’s headwaters, therefore, making Bemidji the first city on the river.

HISTORICAL HERITAGE

Native American and European cultures are interwoven into Bemidji’s rich history and tapestry of offerings.

Predating the arrival of European settlers, the noteworthy history of the area’s original people centers on an Anishinaabe man named Shaynowishkung (He Who Rattles). Born in the nearby Leech and Cass lakes areas, Shaynowishkung married a Leech Lake Pillager Indian woman with whom he had eight children. Deeply saddened by his wife’s untimely death, he and his children loaded their possessions in a birchbark canoe and paddled upriver to settle on the south shore of what is now called Lake Bemidji.

When European settlers arrived in 1888, Shaynowishkung told them the name of Lake Bemijigamaag, an Anishinaabe word that means “Water Running Crosswise Through the Lake.” Believing that he was giving his own name, the settlers called him Chief Bemidji, as legend says, and later named the city after him.

ASSEMBLED IN HONOR

The significance of Shaynowishkung’s central role in Bemidji’s heritage is found

in the statue erected in his honor. The original was a wooden statue carved toward the end of his life in 1901 by a lumberjack (later replaced in 1952 as it was not considered an accurate representation of Shaynowishkung’s heritage).

In 2009, Native Americans sought to improve relations with their white neighbors, forming a Shared Visions Project focused on race relations. A committee equally made up of white residents from Bemidji and Native people from the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, the Red Lake Nation, the White Earth Nation, and Shaynowishkung’s direct descendants, met over six years to set the record straight—reaching a consensus on commissioning a new statue and writing historical plaques to dispell myths about Shaynowishkung.

LaMaack speaks of the city’s pride for the new 9-foot, 3-inch bronze-cast statue by artist Gareth Curtiss. “This sculpture,” he explains, “correctly includes details of Shaynowishkung’s mix of [Anishinaabe] and European-American clothing, including his ‘zhiishiigwan’ [rattles], his Diamond Willow cane, his ‘opwaagan’ [sacred pipe], and his ‘makizinan’ [moccasins].” The bronze didactic markers surrounding

the new statue provide humanizing information, accurately interpreting the colonization and dispossession he experienced as an Anishinaabe person.

PAUL BUNYAN AND BABE THE BLUE OX

Fur trade and logging are also central features of Bemidji. Emily Thabes, executive director of the Beltrami County Historical Society says, “While the fur trade introduced Europeans to Beltrami County, the logging industry brought immigrants to the area in droves and birthed the settlement of many townships along the way. European settlers and Native Americans alike sought timber claims and opportunities to develop their businesses, families, and communities.”

It was the lumberjacks who spawned the folktale of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. During the 1937 Saint Paul Winter Carnival, an 18-foot statue of the legendary lumberjack and his ox was constructed at the city’s waterfront. It was later moved to the shores of Lake Bemidji. Many visitors pose for photos with this famous duo, which is quite possibly Minnesota’s most famous roadside attraction.

A PROGRESSIVE AND INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY

“When you visit Bemidji, you will find a strong and growing community that consists of a charming downtown, full of diverse businesses and larger-than-life landmarks,” says Abby Randall, executive director of the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce. “And, mixed in with our breathtaking natural beauty is progressive technology with some of the fastest internet service in the nation,” she notes—which is always a big plus for event planning.

Randall adds, “Our community consists of innovative manufacturers, aspiring entrepreneurs, exceptional health care, and a growing retail and services sector, coupled with a remarkable collection of sculpture and outdoor art throughout the downtown area,” delivering on the promise of a perfect place to host a conference, meeting, or event.

The festival celebrates the richness of Anishinaabe history, culture, and people, and seeks to build intercultural knowledge and respect for diversity in the region through craft, visual arts, dance, food, storytelling, and fashion.

Robert Aitken, executive director of Leech Lake Financial Services, says, “The 2022 festival provided a fantastic start to what we hope will be an annual event. It’s a refreshing opportunity for Native artists to showcase their work.”

The Bemidji Sculpture Walk has promoted public art in Bemidji since 1999, spanning the downtown area and featuring work of local and regional artists, with works always being added.

There are multiple festivals throughout the year including the Loop the Lake, Watermaker Art Festival, the Dragon

Boat Race, the Blue Ox Marathon, and the Bemidji Water Festival.

FLEXIBILITY AND SCALABILITY

Attached to the Sanford Center Hockey Arena, the George W. Neilson Convention Center is the anchor of Bemidji’s meeting and event universe. Its stylish ballroom can easily be transformed from festive to sophisticated and is suitable for anything from smaller events to larger conferences of up to 1,000 people. Featuring its own chef, modern technology, and guest accommodations, the center also has an experienced team of convention services management professionals.

ACCOMMODATIONS ABOUND

Bemidji’s hotels, motels, and resorts provide a variety of relaxing lodging choices. Among the most notable is Ruttger’s Birchmont Lodge, on the site of cottages built in 1898 for anglers by German immigrant, Joe Ruttger. The Ruttger family maintained the charm of the grand old summer resort on Lake Bemidji from 1936 to 2018—the year when Mark and Karrie Nelson purchased the property, continuing the legacy and proclaiming that they are now “just the new keepers of this iconic resort,” and promising that “the friendly hospitality of family ownership” will never change. The lodge features a large banquet room (capacity is 180), 55 guest rooms, and multiple cottages.

Having come from different cultural backgrounds, David and Phuong O’Neil had to have two separate weddings at two separate venues on the same day to showcase both of their cultures. The O’Neil weddings are what led the couple—along with business partner Chanti Miller—to create Mosaic , a venue opening in January 2023 in downtown Minneapolis with a goal of welcoming and accommodating

many cultures and traditions into the space. “Having a place like this is creating a sense of belonging in a community that needs it,” says Miller. “We have such a diverse demographic within the Twin Cities, and there aren’t always proper representations of each culture in these spaces. So, by us providing this great kind of upscale, elegant venue that is open to all cultures and not charging a premium for you showing up as your true self is what’s really needed in the industry at this time.” The cofounders will work with any vendor their client requests for the 13,000-square-foot space. mosaicmn.com

The O’Neils are not the only couple who has struggled to find the perfect venue. After getting engaged in 2018, Kevin and Andrea Swanson were having a hard time getting everything they were looking for without traveling to the Twin Cities from Duluth. Instead of settling, they built and opened Ivy Black Weddings & Events in Saginaw just north of Duluth, and they were the first couple to marry there last August. The modern, all-black barn has three different outdoor ceremony options, plus plenty of indoor space that is perfect for holiday parties, retreats, and more for up to 288 people. ivyblackmn.com

Also outside the Twin Cities is The Clearing in Sauk Rapids. The property has been opening in phases, but its largest event space, the Riverside Terrace, opened in summer 2022. The Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis opened June 2022 with a whopping 20,000 square feet of event space. The indoor options, including two ballrooms and several smaller rooms, are on the second floor to provide easy access to the city's maze of skyways. When it comes to outdoor spaces, the largest, Riva Plaza, can hold up to 350 outside the fourth floor. fourseasons.com

Just a few blocks away is the Rand Tower Hotel , which has four event spaces with additional options for private events in the hotel’s restaurants and cocktail bars, totaling 7,600 square feet. The fifth-floor restaurant, Blondette, is known for its retractable roof, and Miaou Miaou for its playful cocktails. On the ground level, Bar Rufus will take group reservations of up to 15. randtowerhotel.com

The Twin Cities’ restaurant scene is ever-changing and always growing—which for planners means there are even more places to entertain groups and host private events with the bonus of tasty food and libations. One of those places is Apostle Supper Club in St. Paul. The 1960s Palm Springs supper club-themed restaurant has a “rec room” that planners can rent for private events. The restaurant's second location can be found at the top of the Radisson Hotel Duluth-Harborview, with a different menu and a one-of-a-kind setup: The entire dining room spins, providing rotating views of Lake Superior and downtown Duluth. Both locations are available for full buyouts. apostlesupperclub.com

In Minneapolis, a much-anticipated opening downtown was Billy After Dark , a basement bar underneath Billy Sushi. Groups of 20 to 50 can rent out the space full of neon signs, greenery, and a ceiling illuminated by lights that look like stars. One thing to note: It lists feelings and emotions as descriptors of the drinks—rather than the actual ingredients in each cocktail—on the menu, inspired by hip-hop and R&B music from the 1990s and early 2000s. “It’s more with every sip that you take, thinking, what is this drink giving you in a sense of feelings, emotions, memories,” says Stephen Larson, beverage director and general manager of Billy After Dark. “What ends up in your face is something that you probably would have never ordered but you actually have fallen in love with.” billysushi.net

Also downtown is noa , within the IDS Center. Small groups can book the restaurant’s patio in the atrium of the Crystal Court. “It’s a year-round ‘outdoor’ space,” says Dustin Dye, utility general manager for Infuse Hospitality, which operates the restaurant. “People get the feeling of being outside during the wintertime, when in Minneapolis it’s cold.” The restaurant has two other private dining spaces inside, while noa doubles as a great choice for after-work happy hours for professionals in the skyways. noaminneapolis.com

Many more soon-to-be spots have popped up outside of downtown Minneapolis. One of them is Eat Street Crossing , which has plans to open early this year. Spanning burgers, ice cream from Bebe Zito, and ramen from the chef behind Zen Box Izakaya thus far, the food hall will have no shortage of variety. The private event space located on the mezzanine level will hold 30 seated and 50 standing. However, planners can rent out the entire hall for larger events of up to 450. eatstreetcrossing.com

There’s plenty to be discovered in the suburbs as well, but a highlight is Hackamore Brewing Co. in Chanhassen. Zac Gleason, the man behind @sotaeats on Instagram, is stepping out from behind the smartphone to pursue his passion for craft beer. “It was a no-brainer for me that starting a brewery was the route I wanted to go,” he says. The brewery will open this spring with 16 rotating taps, a golf simulator, and a stage. Groups can choose between full and partial buyouts for networking events, private parties, and more. hackamorebrewing.com

While restaurants and happy hours are often enough to keep groups satisfied, up the ante by booking the agenda with activities and experiences unique to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Keep an eye out for Elusive Botanical Bar by Dashfire , which opened in Northeast Minneapolis in December 2022. Not only is the cocktail room available for private events on Sundays to start—and Mondays and Tuesdays in time—but Dashfire

While classic cocktail-making classes are an option, sessions also focus on how to make spirits from scratch—down to the botanicals that go into a batch of gin that attendees get to take home after it proofs. “I wish I had these classes available to me when I got started, because I had to do this all through 3 a.m. rabbit holes on the internet,” says Jeff Rogers, bar manager for Elusive Botanical. dashfire.us

Paris, Minnesota

ufus R. Rand Jr., a World War I aviator with the French Lafayette Escadrille and the president of the Minneapolis Gas Light Co., always looked to the clouds. While the Roaring ’20s were at their apex in 1928, he built the 26-story Rand Tower, which was the tallest building in Minneapolis at the time.

The tower housed offices for 89 years; Maven Real Estate Partners of Minneapolis bought Rand Tower in 2017 and converted it into a hotel. The Gettys Group, based in Chicago, renovated the building, restoring the original Parisian Art Deco details and creating 270 guest rooms—with the refined Rand Tower Hotel, a Marriott Tribute Portfolio Hotel managed by HHM, completely renovated by December 2020.

“The Gettys Group commissioned art that honors Minneapolis from Local Language Art [of Oakland, California], an art consulting firm that focuses on highlighting local elements,” says Bernadette Schindel, the hotel’s director of corporate sales. “A plethora of original elements remains, including facades, windows, marble floors, ceilings, lanterns, sconces, metal inlays, walls, elevator doors, and more. The details give the guests a feeling of flight, and every room has a different selected and sourced material, including stretched canvasses and polished brass that add inspiration to the overall experience.”

The Rand Tower Hotel has 7,000 square feet of meeting space, and groups can also buy out any of the hotel’s three Daniel del Prado culinary establishments: a bar and restaurant for French lighter bites, Bar Rufus; elegant cocktail lounge Miaou Miaou, named with a nod toward the iconic lions of the Lafayette Escadrille; and the French-Punk-inspired Blondette restaurant, which fuses classic French techniques with Pacific Northwest ingredients. The three establishments all opened in 2022, including the latter two in October, when the Rand Tower Hotel marked its official grand opening. The hotel is connected to the Minneapolis Skyway System. randtowerhotel.com

FEELING BETTER AT MSP

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is the No. 1-ranked mega airport in the country in 2022, according to research firm J.D. Power. Travelers entering and leaving the new restrooms at the end of Concourse G in Terminal 1 will see one reason for its ranking when peering through the “poetic glass installation,” “MSP Liminal,” by Miami-based artist Monika Bravo.

Ben Owen, director of Arts@MSP, a program of the nonprofit Airport Foundation MSP and the Metropolitan Airports Commission, explains why the installation is outside the restrooms. “What are the necessities as you come off your flight? Restrooms are one of them, coffee is another. … I really think that the most important aspect of having artwork in the airport is it signals to our guests [and] it signals to the users of the facility … that the owners and operators of this facility care about your experience as you are walking through. … [Art] makes guests feel better about using the facility.”

In 2022, the Arts@MSP program featured 609 works of original fine art.

Although native Minnesotan Sari Brouwer has been with McNamara Alumni Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis since 2015, she stepped into the job of director of sales and events in February 2022. As director, she supervises a staff of nine that handles 800 events annually at the teeming on-campus event center.

“I’m really proud of our team for having the attention to detail and the level of service that we do for our clients to make sure their experience is amazing here,” Brouwer says. “I’d just say a lot of our clients come back year after year, and I think that is a testament to the processes we have in place that make it such a wonderful experience.”

Born and raised in Cannon Falls with two older brothers, Brouwer went to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, where she competed on the track and field team in long and triple jump. She also studied abroad in Japan, living with a host family while attending Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka.

“There was one member of the host family who spoke a little English,” she says, “and we would speak English occasionally, but everyone else spoke Japanese. I had two years of Japanese from college. … I really got fully immersed [in the Japanese language] with the family, and my skills developed rapidly living there and taking classes. Sadly, I have lost a lot of those skills,” Brouwer says, with a laugh.

She returned from her semester abroad to Minnesota, finished college, and began work in wedding sales with Bellagala in St. Paul. After seven years of increasing responsibility at Bellagala, she joined McNamara for the opportunity to work on a wider variety of events.

Several people have influenced her throughout her journey through life. “My parents had a very strong influence on me, in by upbringing, [my brothers], as well,” Brouwer says.

“The people in my life have all set high standards for me to keep striving toward excellence and to be a better version of me as a person, a parent, an employee, a friend, a boss. I hope that those high standards and expectations I have learned along the way can be an influence to the team I work with and the people in my life.”
