» AS GENERATION Z (those born in the late 1990s to early 2000s) enters and establishes themselves in the workforce, many meeting planners are thinking about ways to attract this generation to their events. After all, doing so improves attendance in the short term and, if things are done right, builds loyal participants in later years. To get a sense of what makes Generation Z tick, trade show, exhibit, and event company Freeman worked with analytics company Edelman Data & Intelligence to produce the Freeman Gen Z Report 2023, which provides key insights into ways to appeal to this audience. One of the highlights of the report is that the vast majority (85%) of Generation Z survey respondents say trusting a brand is critical for attending an event, and a similarly high percentage say they feel more trusting of a brand after interacting at a live event. But even more interesting is that a much higher percentage of Generation Z respondents versus the general population routinely makes purchasing decisions based on their beliefs. The study notes that this generation is more attracted to brands that focus on “making the world a better place” and contribute to making the Generation Zer believe they are a “better person.” You can appeal to this generation by showcasing your brand’s values and purpose-driven initiatives, either during your event or, even better, in general. The idea is not new—for example, altruistic marketing is a longtime go-to strategy for advertising campaigns. But Generation Z is sensitive to insincerity, the survey notes, so whatever you do, be real about it. Relatively simple things to consider include offering attendees the opportunity to volunteer at a food bank, donating leftover food to food shelves, bringing in keynoters with benevolent messages, and using venues with sustainable bona fides. The report also stresses that Generation Z dislikes jam-packed event schedules, wants networking opportunities, appreciates learning new things that surprise them, values “memorable” gatherings, and enjoys business event experiences that take some cues from music, food, and fan festivals. Bringing in food trucks and hosting a live outdoor music performance during a networking event are two examples of the latter. I’m not Generation Z. Not even close, really. But you yourself don’t need to be of Generation Z either to appeal to this audience. Putting in genuine effort in a few key areas will increase attendance and make you and your new event participants feel great in the process.

Drinks at Torey’s Restaurant & Bar in Owatonna

T R A N S P O R TAT I O N : Owatonna sits at the intersection of Interstate 35 and U.S. Route 14. It is 60 miles south of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and 40 miles west of Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport. HOTELS: The city has 513 hotel rooms, and a Home2 Suites by Hilton, opening in February, will add 84 rooms. A DoubleTree by Hilton, opening toward the end of this year, will add some 130 rooms. Current hotels include Baymont by Wyndham Owatonna; Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Owatonna, MN; and Courtyard by Marriott-Downtown Owatonna.

The southern Minnesota city embraces its history, exudes friendliness, and offers so many places to gather BY TODD R. BERGER

T

he name Owatonna is rooted in the Dakota words for the nearby Straight River, “Wakpá Owótha na.” The Dakota inhabited the region for centuries, traditionally hunting game and harvesting wild rice. European settlers arrived at the town of Owatonna in 1854, and the city was incorporated in 1858. From the late 1800s to 1940, Owatonna was known as the “Butter Capital of the World,” and one creamery still operates in Hope, a town to the south of the city.

With a population of a little more than 26,000 people, Owatonna is a midsize city that offers historic buildings, event venues for up to 2,000 people, and welcoming locals who will embrace your event. V I B E : The city is friendly and casual, and you will see this inherent nature in the staff at the hotels, venues, and restaurants. “It’s just a great place for people to gather,” says Glenda Smith, director of conventions and tourism for Visit Owatonna.

MUST-SEES AND - DOS: The internationa lly know n Nationa l Fa rmers’ Bank of Owatonna building downtown was designed by Louis Sullivan, an influential architect of the Prairie School who was a mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright and later went on to build skyscrapers in Chicago, Illinois, and beyond. “Our downtown has gone through a lot of renovations in the last few years,” says Smith. “Downtown has lots of fun boutique shopping and some 100-plus-year-old buildings. One thing that is also unique to our community is the Minnesota State Public School Orphanage Museum. It ran as an orphanage back in the 1800s, and it currently houses the Owatonna Arts Center.” visitowatonna.org/meetings

RESTAURANTS: Torey’s Restaurant & Bar has space upstairs for gatherings. Other group-friendly eateries include Timber Lodge Steakhouse, Spare Time Restaurant & Bar, and the Owatonna Country Club. Also worth checking out for group dining and catering are Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que, Foremost Brewing Cooperative, and Mineral Springs Brewery, which will add event space late this year.

CynCity Tours’ “Gangsterland Walking Tour”

CYNCITY TOURS LOVES ST. PAUL » ST. PAUL HAS A HISTORY RIFE WITH gangsters, ghosts, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, and owner Cynthia Schreiner Smith’s CynCity Tours can teach you all about the city’s colorful past, as well as its architecturally extraordinary present. And although CynCity will do what Schreiner Smith calls “step-on” tours via tour bus for groups upon request, most tours are experienced on foot. “There are a whole lot of people who really appreciate a walking tour,” Schreiner Smith says. “You’re really just strolling by the city, and you’re really seeing it.” Schreiner Smith’s two most popular tours are the “Gangsterland Walking Tour” and the “Ghosts & Gables Summit Avenue Tour.” CynCity is the official tour company of Union Depot and the Saint Paul Winter Carnival, and the company also partners with Saint Paul Brewing, 11 Wells Distillery, and The Saint Paul Hotel. Each tour can accommodate up to 20 attendees, but for larger groups, CynCity books additional tour guides, with each guide taking part of the group. But what really sets CynCity apart, Schreiner Smith says, is the big hug it gives St. Paul. “We are the company that has the biggest heart for St. Paul. We really want to promote it. We want to lift everybody else, float all boats.” –Todd R. Berger

DE ST I NAT ION St. Paul

Outdoor event at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory at Como Park, St. Paul

A Gem on the Mississippi

» SITUATED ALONG the banks of the mighty Mississippi River lies St. Paul, one of Minnesota’s oldest cities and the state’s capital. It is the smaller, cozier twin to neighboring Minneapolis and, together, the two make up the Twin Cities. From its vibrant downtown to its acres of parkland, St. Paul offers something for every planner and attendee—including some distinctive places to meet you won’t find anywhere else. UNIQUE VENUES One of St. Paul’s main attractions is the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory, and a “zoo” has stood on the site since 1897 (the original fenced-in pasture erected by the city

on the site had three deer as inhabitants). Located within 384-acre Como Park, the zoo and the conservatory attract more than 2 million visitors annually. It also offers unique spaces for corporate events and meetings. Como Park’s meeting spaces are located within its Como Visitor Center, which boasts 65,000 square feet of space. “We offer fabulous food in an amazing, unique setting that is known and loved by the community,” says Robin Fortney, catering sales manager with Lancer Catering, the exclusive on-site caterer for Como Park Zoo & Conservatory. What’s more, planners can treat attendees to a panoramic view of the neighboring bird exhibit. The Como Visitor Center’s

auditorium can accommodate up to 200 seated attendees or 300 standing. Space on the second f loor includes an outdoor terrace overlooking the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory and its gardens. The covered porch in the Como Visitor Center also offers spectacular views of the conservatory, especially at night. It can hold up to 400 standing or 240 seated. For more intimate gatherings, the Ordway Gardens offer both indoor and outdoor space for up to 75 standing or 42 seated. Attendees can walk the corridor leading to the conservatory’s nationally acclaimed Bonsai Pavilion, which is accessible year-round. If you want your event to be in the middle of the action in downtown St. Paul, Union

Gathering at Union Depot; Below: Elegant courtroom meeting space at the Landmark Center

Depot might just be the venue you’re looking for. The depot is in the historic Lower tow n district , which is know n for its vibrant art scene. It is within walking distance of several hotels, as well as museums, restaurants, breweries, the Saint Paul Farmers Market, and CHS Field, home of the St. Paul Saints, the AAA baseball affiliate of MLB’s Minnesota Twins. O n t he Nat ion a l R e g i s t er of H i s toric Places, Union Depot underwent a $243 million renovation in 2012 to restore it to its former grandeur. The renovations included cleaning 10,000 square feet of Tennessee pink marble, restoring 38,000 square feet of decorative ceiling plaster, and replacing with historical accuracy 63 arched windows. Today, the depot serves as a multimodal transportation hub as well as a unique venue for meetings and events. Union Depot has five indoor spaces and two outdoor spaces that can accommodate anything from small networking events to larger conferences. Many of its indoor meeting spaces feature natural light and beautiful views of the Mississippi River. Of its available 27,419 square feet of event space, the Waiting Room is the largest. It can hold up to 1,000 people for a banquet or 2,500 for a standing event. The four other on-site spaces are perfect for breakout sessions or classes. Union Depot contracts with preferred caterers—including Afro Deli & Grill, D’Amico Catering, and Lake Elmo Inn

A TASTE OF ST. PAUL HISTORY Also downtown you will find the Landmark Center, a former federal and state courthouse, U.S. post office, and customs

house that was turned into a cultural center for the arts. This historic building was the site of two infamous trials of the 1930s, where Evelyn Frechette and Bessie Skinner were convicted of harboring legendary gangster John Dillinger. In 1935, Arthur “Doc” Barker was tried and convicted at the Landmark Center for the kidnapping of a prominent St. Paul banker, Edward Bremer. Today, the Richardsonian Romanesque Landmark Center is on the National Register of Historic Places. The center hosts numerous theater, dance, music, art, and other special events throughout the year. “The Landmark Center offers a combination of historical charm, a central location, and unique ambience that makes it a standout choice for corporate meetings,” says Hilari Baatz, events director for Minnesota Landmarks, which manages the center. “Its ability to provide a distinctive and memorable backdrop for your event sets it apart from other venues in the area.” The center provides meeting space that can accommodate anywhere from 20 to 1,000 attendees. old courtrooms are available, the largest being The Ramsey County Room, which can hold up to 125 standing. For larger events, the center’s auditorium can accommodate up to 230 guests. The firstfloor atrium holds up to 750 standing, and you can even rent out the entire building if desired. Planners can bring in their own caterers, but food and beverages aren’t allowed in the auditorium. Kitty-corner across Rice Park from the Landmark Center, The Saint Paul Hotel is a historic Renaissance-style hotel built in 1910. It has hosted some famous people from the past, such as Gene Autry, Lawrence Welk, and Charles Lindbergh, as well as U.S. presidents from William Taft to George W. Bush. The hotel is managed by Morrissey Hospitality. The Saint Paul Hotel has several green initiatives in place to save energy and be more sustainable. The hotel’s Promenade Ballroom is the largest meeting space at 3,900 square feet, and it can accommodate classroom-style seating for up to 200 people. There are also six smaller rooms perfect for breakout sessions or board meetings. “The Saint Paul Hotel offers elegant, well-equipped meeting spaces for corporate conferences and events,” says Jess Morris, marketing account manager for Morrissey Hospitality.

MODERN ELEGANCE The Saint Paul RiverCentre is two blocks from the Landmark Center and The Saint Paul Hotel. Opened in 1998, the Saint Paul RiverCentre has sustainability bona fides for meetings and events in the city. The convention center was the first in the country to obtain LEED, Green Globes, and Event Industry Council certifications for its sustainable practices. Its Green Team works to ensure leftover food from events is either composted, recycled, or donated to local community organizations. The building is also entirely powered by Windsource renewable electricity, a program through Xcel Energy that offers locally produced wind energy. “Our team has a plethora of resources for event planners to be as green as possible,” says Sam Johnson, communications and digital media specialist for the Saint Paul RiverCentre. The Sa int Paul R iverCentre offers 239,052 square feet of meeting and event space, including the 44,800-square-foot Roy Wilkins Auditorium, which can hold 5,800 people. The center’s two exhibition halls can accommodate up to 6,000

people, making them ideal for trade shows, conventions, and consumer shows. The Saint Paul RiverCentre’s 27,000square-foot Grand Ballroom can be divided into eight individual rooms, and there are 15 smaller meeting rooms that can be used individually or combined. Several of the meeting rooms provide f loor-toceiling windows with amazing views of the Mississippi River. Other event spaces include the Roy Wilkins Auditorium (31,683 square feet), Kellogg Lobby (28,434 square feet), and RiverCentre Board Room (270 square feet). Morrissey Hospitality is the exclusive caterer for the RiverCentre, and the venue also provides audiovisual and technical support for events held there. “We have everything that any prospective meeting and event planner might need to hold their event here,” Johnson says. “Event organizers consistently return due to the exceptional service and premium experience offered at our venue.” Three Sixty St. Peter Street, located across the street from The Saint Paul Hotel, is also managed by Morrissey Hospitality and catered by the hotel. Private dining room at W.A. Frost & Co. in St. Paul

Eat Like a Minnesotan

The proof is in the pudding—or rather, on the menu BY LIANNA MATT McLERNON

FROM OUR CAPITAL TO THE LAKES In Minnesota’s capital city of St. Paul, Cossetta Alimentari has been serving up Italian food for more than a century, and its Louis Ristorante & Bar has a private dining room for up to 50 with views of the city’s historic cathedral. A little newer but

just as beloved is W.A. Frost & Co., which has given locals contemporary American cuisine in a European ambience since 1975. Indoor private dining can accommodate up to 60 attendees, and if you gather in warmer months, the patio is also available. Both northern and southern Minnesota offer more musts: The New Scenic Cafe in Duluth and Twigs Tavern and Grille in Rochester. The New Scenic Cafe—the 2023 winner of the Minnesota Monthly Holiday Dining Bracket Challenge—serves New American food along the shores of Lake Superior with private dining for 26 or full buyouts for up to 74. The latter is a New American spot featuring a picturesque patio, amber lighting, and—most importantly—a menu where every item has an equally delicious gluten-free version prepared in a separate kitchen. Book the back room for up to 60 or have them cater your gathering at the meeting rooms at the

connected Centerstone Plaza Hotel. Either way, consider trying the award-winning butternut squash ravioli. GLOBAL FARE There is no shortage of international cuisine across the North Star State, either. Near Stillwater, about 30 minutes east of the Twin Cities, you’ll find Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter serving delicious German dishes in its renovated banquet room that can accommodate nearly 100 people. The banquet room is slated to open this February. Union Hmong Kitchen, by Chef Yia Vang (featured in the TV show “Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend”), has catering; Vinaian, which will open this spring in Minneapolis’ Northeast neighborhood; and a stint at North Loop Minneapolis’ Graze | Provisions + Libations, a food hall with semiprivate spaces for up to 200. A full buyout option is also available.

» MINNESOTA MAY BE known for hot dish a nd wa l leye—a nd our chefs a re darn good at making those foods—but the f lavor of Minnesota goes far beyond homestyle comfort foods. It’s dim sum, empanadas, curry, and chapati, too. It’s scratch food made from local ingredients. It’s generational recipes and fine dining, all served with superb Midwestern hospitality. Across the state, we have options for any group and any palate. Here are some quintessential Minnesota bites to consider for your event.

A toast at Young Joni in Minneapolis

Abdirahman Kahin came from Somalia and started Afro Deli & Grill in the Twin Cities (also in Northeast)—snagging the 2023 National Small Business Person of the Year award from the U.S. Small Business A ssociation—a nd a lthough the locations don’t offer private dining, its catering—and sambusas—are not to be overlooked. And then, of course, we have Ann Kim’s James Beard Award-winning pizzeria, Young Joni, also located in the Northeast neighborhood and offering buyouts for up to 125 people. One of Young Joni’s many clients was the McKnight Foundation, which held its Distinguished Artist Award celebration there in 2022 for theater leader Faye M. Price. Everyone was wowed by its beautiful space, hospitality—the staff even secured additional parking for guests— and the food, from the cocktail reception to the family-style entrees. Want an insider’s tip? A beloved local favorite is the Korean short rib pizza. “ The beautiful par t about this was that while all of our guests were seated throughout the restaurant at different tables, we all experienced each dish at the same time as they were brought out one by one,” recalls McKnight Senior Project Manager Maria Thu Salas. “To this day, when I see folks who attended the event, including Faye, they talk about how magnificent that evening was because of the ambience and, most importantly, the food.” INTENTION IN EVERY DISH Owamni and Wise Acre are even more Minneapolis favorites offering a taste of the land. Chef Sean Sherman—otherwise known as “The Sioux Chef ”—has a

Wise Acre in the Tangletown neighborhood of South Minneapolis

decolonized menu at Owamni that showcases the world of Indigenous food, with no colonial ingredients such as wheat flour, cane sugar, or dairy. Groups of up to 40 can gather in the private dining room at this James Beard Award-winning restaurant, and many say the food is unlike anything they have eaten before. As for Wise Acre, the eatery offers three-course meals, family-style dishes, or bites and snacks for its private buyouts (accommodating up to 36 in the winter and up to 75 with outdoor options), and the menu highlights seasonal produce and meat from its chemical-free farm 45 minutes away. Fina lly, we would be remiss not to include Chef Gavin Kaysen’s Spoon and Stable. Winner of a James Beard Award and recognized as one of the “40 Most Important Restaurants of the Past 40 Years” by Food & Wine in 2018, this North Loop Minneapolis restaurant has three private dining options for up to 32 people and a buyout option for up to 130. Zinc Agency, a national entertainment and event agency, has done about 10 to 15 private events there, and Co-President Will Steinberg says Spoon and Stable is one of the first places he pitches if a client is looking for a place to host in the area. “We know the level of hospitality they accomplish,” he says. “It’s not just private dining—it’s private dining, plus we partner with Chef Kaysen, who’s usually a part of the event, mingling, taking pictures, and signing autographs, but he’s also always doing a really fun, unique cooking demonstration.”

Spoon and Stable in Minneapolis

“Eating like a Minnesotan” can mean so many things when it comes to the state’s cuisine, but, hopefully, this gives you a place to start. And if your attendees are really hankering for a classic burger and fries, it’s a must to take them to a spot with a Juicy Lucy—a burger originating in Minnesota featuring melted cheese inside two hamburger patties. afrodeli.com cossettas.com gasthausbavarianhunter.com newsceniccafe.com owamni.com spoonandstable.com twigstavernandgrille.com unionkitchenmn.com wafrost.com wiseacreeatery.com youngjoni.com

FOUR SEASONS,

No matter the weather, there’s always something fun to do in the North Star State

T

by J U LI E K E N D R I C K he saying around these parts is that if you don’t like the weather in Minnesota, just wait a minute. That changeability is often the only constant in this northern state with four distinct seasons. As a result,

residents have learned how to have fun all year-round. There is something to be said for hosting events in Brainerd, Duluth, Minneapolis,

Rochester, or St. Paul anytime during the year. But some of these host cities shine in particular seasons, and knowing what to embrace if you’re planning Minnesota events in certain seasons is a distinct advantage for meeting planners. Check out some of the top picks for places to visit during each season, all of which offer your attendees an opportunity to revel in the state’s abundance of clear skies, crystal waters, and natural beauty.

SPRING

"The downtown area is not only conducive to meetings, but it also really comes alive in the evenings." –JAN TOLLE MACDONALD, manager of global accounts, HelmsBriscoe

One of the city’s many gems is its stateof-the-art Mayo Civic Center. “It’s the Upper Midwest’s premier destination for local, regional, national, and international meetings and events,” Ward says. “The center features Minnesota’s largest ballroom, as well as pre-function areas with stunning views of the Zumbro River and downtown Rochester. Mayo Civic Center’s Riverfront Plaza is an outdoor reception venue that’s perfect for springtime gatherings.” There’s always plenty for groups to do in and around Rochester. For groups interested in learning about health, consider

a Mayo Clinic tour of the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center. Groups that want to cover a lot of ground should consider the Rochester Trolley & Tour Co. “This is a wonderful way to see the sights and experience the history of Rochester,” Ward says. “Groups can hop onto a vintage red trolley and tour the major historic, cultural, and architectural sites and attractions in Rochester, including those integral to the founding and growth of Mayo Clinic.” Dining options abound year-round, but spring is patio season in Rochester. One popular spot is the Purple Goat, located in

Spring is a great time to gather in Rochester. “As the home of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, we’re known as a city of care and compassion,” says Joe Ward, president of Experience Rochester and Mayo Civic Center. In the spring, the hea lth-oriented metropolis is brimming with residents and visitors who can’t wait to get outside and enjoy all the city has to offer. “When the weather warms up, we all head out to our 85 miles of paved, interconnected walking and biking trails, many outdoor and indoor pickleball courts, a nd boat a nd bicycle rentals at the picturesque Silver Lake, all located just minutes from downtown.” T he cit y ema nates what Ward calls “a vibrant cultural scene, encompassing the arts, music, and more.” And when all those outdoor activities work up your attendees’ appetites, they’ll find a “budding culinary scene that has grown significantly in recent years, with unique local restaurants bringing international f lavors to the heart of the Midwest,” Ward adds. Meeting planners agree on the destination’s suitability for events of all sizes. Certified meeting professional Jan Tolle MacDonald, manager of global accounts for HelmsBriscoe, tells other planners they’ll enjoy the professionalism of local resources with a global worldview. “Meeting planners should note that Rochester’s hotels have a wealth of experience in hosting meetings thanks to their frequent medical conferences,” she says. “The downtown area is not only conducive to meetings, but it also really comes alive in the evenings,” MacDonald adds. “With an underground walkway system connecting various high-end shops and restaurants, even rainy spring days or other adverse weather won’t be an issue.”

the old Shopko North building in northwest Rochester. The restaurant seats 166 indoors, 24 at the bar, and 60 or more on the large outdoor patio, which features yard games and big-screen TVs. And for a great mix of indoor and outdoor fun, the Workshop Food Hall & Bar, previously the workshop for the canning factory across the street, has a popular patio that overlooks Rochester’s famed Ear of Corn Water Tower. ThaiPop serves innovative Thai dishes and tantalizing cocktails.

SUMMER

The Tw in Cities of Minneapolis a nd St. Paul shine bright during the summer. “Many cities experience summer slumps, with people heading up north to enjoy the lakes, but St. Paul really comes alive then,” says Bridget McCoy, director of client engagement for Visit St. Paul. “Farmers market shoppers, music in the parks, and summer sports make St. Paul buzz. We’re home to the St. Paul Saints [Minor League Baseball team] and [MLS’] Minnesota United, which are peak summer fun and make perfect summer additions to any event.”

Things are similarly active in St. Paul’s neighbor to the west, Minneapolis. Kevin Kurtt, Meet Minneapolis’ public relations and communications manager, says, “Summers in Minneapolis are precious. And because the season is short, visitors have an abundance of things to do during the few months of warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. “Outdoor activities and experiences range from walking, biking, or paddling the Chain of Lakes; patio and rooftop dining throughout the city; cheering on MLB’s Minnesota Twins at beautiful Target Field; and taking in the sights at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden,” he continues. “Summer is short in Minneapolis, but the list of things to do is long.” For attendees who want to be at the heart of it all, consider a stay at the Renaissance Minneapolis Hotel, The Depot, which is just steps from the Mississippi River in all its summertime glory. It’s an ideal central hotel for urban explorers seeking to enjoy the city’s exciting sports events at U.S. Bank Stadium, as well as music and arts at the nearby Armory. Dining can be as casual or elegant as your group requires. One fun stop is The

Market at Malcolm Yards in the city’s Prospect Park neighborhood near the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Housed in a historic machinery building, the market is both an incubator to empower chefs and a culinary destination for diverse f lavors. It features dining and cocktail innovations like a self-pour tap wa ll, a boxcar bar, and nine cuisine stations. The Midtown Global Market is another great option located just south of downtown. It’s an internationally themed public marketplace that offers fresh and prepared foods, restaurants, and unique gifts. Other eater ies suitable for g roups include Hell’s Kitchen, an independent, Instagram-friendly spot. There’s also wom a n- a nd L at i no - ow ne d Cent ro, revered for its award-winning tacos and beloved for its creativity.

Outdoor patios are very popular with the locals, so check out Gnome Craft Pub over in St. Paul, a neighborhood gastro pub with a very popular summertime patio. Also in the capital city, W.A. Frost & Co. is a landmark restaurant that has been serving customers for nearly 50 years in the historic Cathedral Hill neighborhood. W.A. Frost’s patio is one of the most popular in the Twin Cities.

Clockwise from above left: Kayaking on the Mississippi River near downtown Minneapolis; Sailboats moored at Bde Maka Ska in Minneapolis; Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge in autumn; Coffee on the patio at Pier B Resort Hotel in Duluth

To the north, Duluth is a haven in autumn for the outdoor lovers in your group. According to Daniele Villa, president of sales and operations at Visit Duluth, “Lake Superior has a unique climate effect on the region that provides an opportunity for cool autumn days and brilliant fall colors, so fall is a fabulous time to visit Duluth." She adds that the fresh lake air and fall foliage provide a scenic backdrop to community events, including one of nature’s most remarkable spectacles: the migration of some 76,000 raptors that can be seen from Duluth’s Hawk Ridge Nature Center. The city is primed for meetings of every shape and size. There are a total of 1,200 rooms across 11 hotels located within walking distance of the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, which has 250,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space, ballrooms, and meeting rooms. One of the newest lodging options is the Pier B Resort Hotel, located on more than 7 acres of land, right along the shores of Lake Superior. “Duluth has stunning natural beauty that will impress your guests and create a memorable ambience for your event,”

Villa says. “It’s easy to create memorable dining opportunities at many of our patios and fire pits at hotels, coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and breweries.” Attendees can enjoy the views of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world, and watch oceangoing salties and lakers (Great Lakes only) ships arrive and depart the port. Duluth's surrounding hills, forests, and waterfalls are not more than a mile from any city location. Visitors can explore the arts, music, history, and cuisine of Duluth, and experience the hospitality and charm of the locals. Autumn is a great time to enjoy some of Duluth’s attractions, including the Duluth Oktoberfestival. Held in mid-September,

this famous festival features beer, Bavarian food, authentic live music, games, and activities. Groups will want to visit the 39-room Glensheen Mansion, on a 12-acre estate along the shores of Lake Superior. It’s open daily for tours. Groups are also easily accommodated at the Great Lakes Aquarium, on the Duluth waterfront and featuring freshwater life and habitats found within the Great Lakes

basin. Another fun activity attendees might enjoy is a ride on the North Shore Scenic Railroad, which operates along 28 scenic miles of the Lakefront Line between Duluth and Two Harbors. The city offers plenty of group meeting and dining options as well. The Clyde Ironworks, located in a converted factory, operates as both a casual restaurant and a 600-seat event center. Pickwick Restaurant, founded in 1888 as the Old Saloon, is a tasting bar located within Fitger Brewing Co. The beloved eatery has been named an “American Classic” by the James Beard Foundation. Another can’t-miss Duluth institution is Grandma’s Saloon & Grill, which says it features “real history, real antiques, real service, and really good food.” Finally, The Boat Club offers fine dining in a nautical atmosphere, making it the perfect location on a sunny fall day.

Whether your attendees want to unwind by the fire or experience the thrill of the great outdoors, Brainerd—Minnesota’s

winter playground to the north—is a top spot for winter gatherings. “We’re a great winter destination because we offer both indoor and outdoor experiences,” says Mary Devine Johnson, executive director of Visit Brainerd. “Outdoor experiences include cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and tubing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and fat-tire biking,” she says. And there’s plenty to do indoors, too, including breweries, dining, spas, a distillery, and a winery. “There are more than 600 hotel rooms in Brainerd and Baxter, with a variety of meeting spaces perfect for small- to mediumsize groups,” Johnson says. “There is also the North Pacific Center, which offers large events and exhibit space.” Some of those lodging options include Madden’s on Gull La ke, which offers more recreational amenities than any other resor t in the Midwest. A nother spot that’s popular year-round is Cragun’s Resort, which has 44 meeting rooms and space for 800. There’s also Grand View Lodge Spa & Golf Resort, which offers multiple meeting spaces and a new 60-room boutique hotel.

Brainerd’s Five Rocks Distilling Co.; Below: Cross-country skiing near Brainerd

Outdoor activities are a must for any group when visiting Brainerd in the winter, and snowmobiling is especially popular. The area features 1,200 miles of snowmobiling tra ils, which means there’s always a chance to get outdoors. Rentals are available at Boats & Beyond Rental. Or, for nonmotorized fun, head to the Northland Arboretum. “This is an excellent resource for hiking, cross-country skiing, and nature-oriented events,” Johnson says. “There’s meeting space on-site, and they’ll organize special classes for groups.” The area also features plenty of catering a nd dining possibi lities. Loca l company 3 Cheers Hospitality operates several venues around town, including Iron Range, Prairie Bay, and Notch 8. Or, book your group a meal at Baxter’s Bar & Grill at Arrowwood Lodge. For evening happy hours or predinner cocktails, consider Five Rocks Distilling Co., a microdistillery serving bourbon, whiskey, vodka, gin, and amaretto mixed drinks in its Cocktail Room. Jack Pine Brewery in nearby Baxter also has space for groups. “It can be a fun option for group outings, where special events like live music, trivia, and arts-themed events can be held,” Johnson says. experiencerochestermn.com minneapolis.org visitbrainerd.com visitduluth.com visitsaintpaul.com

A

fter success building out the experiential Pedal Pub to some 60 locations around the country, including the Twin Cities, the partners behind that endeavor have launched The Game Show Studio inside Rosedale Center in Roseville. They are looking to replicate their success, this time with a more unusual team-building activity. “We wanted to bring this immersive, Hollywood-style experience to Minneapolis,” says Julian Wagner, partner of The Game Show Studio. “We thought, ‘What better way to do it than through the game shows you grew up watching with your family?’” Although this is the second location for The Game Show Studio (the first is in Houston, Texas), the Roseville outlet is the company’s flagship storefront. Two teams of up to 15 people compete in games like Wheel of Wonder, Survey Showdown, and Name That Price. An energetic host (often area comedians hired by the studio’s partners) keeps things moving with questions, which can be customized for a group with certain packages. Lights and buzzers add to the semi-frantic and competitive atmosphere. Catering is also available from Chipotle, Panera, or Crave. Combining all these features is compelling to groups, says Max Lauerman, also a partner in The Game Show Studios. He adds, “It brings back a nostalgia factor. You dream of growing up to be on a game show. Now, you can do it, and it’s immersive and a studiolike feel. It’s like you’re in a real game show.” gameshowstudio.com

RENOVATIONS PROGRESS FOR GRAND CASINOS » BOTH GRAND CASINO MILLE LACS in Onamia and Grand Casino Hinckley

in Hinckley will see multimillion-dollar renovations to guest rooms, suites, and lobbies, with construction slated through this summer. Each redesigned guest room will offer a modern ambience with hints of Ojibwe culture, including artwork from Indigenous artists. “Our work is rooted in our commitment to the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe,” says Joe Nayquonabe, CEO of Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures, the parent company of both casinos. “This renovation project has been carefully selected with their interests in mind. Our goal is to enhance our casino hotel properties, ensuring that they remain leading destinations in the region, offering great experiences to all who visit.” Both casino hotels will remain open during the renovations, as work will progress floor by floor. The casino hotels boast ballrooms ranging in capacity from 1,600 to 2,300 meeting-goers and offer catering, bar service, audiovisual equipment, golf and other outdoor activities, and full-service casinos. grandcasinomn.com

Sherman Honored With Julia Child Award » LAST OCTOBER, Sean Sherman—award-winning Minneapolis-based chef, cookbook author, activist, and founder of North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NATIFS)—won the prestigious ninth annua l Julia Child Award. The award is accompanied by a $50,000 grant from The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts that will go to the nonprofit NATIFS and support the Indigenous Food Lab, a professional kitchen and training center dedicated to expanding access to Indigenous foods. Sherman accepted the award at a gala held at the Grand Hall of The Depot in Minneapolis. “I saw the impact that food can have on the world through Julia, and I’m excited to continue her legacy through my work,” says Sherman in a prepared statement. “With the generous

AMPHITHEATER COMING TO CANTERBURY PARK

C

anterbury Park in Shakopee is building a 19,000-seat amphitheater as part of a larger expansion project that will bring more restaurants, entertainment options, and a hotel to the campus of Minnesota’s only horse-racing track. “It’s certainly going to be the largest amphitheater in Minnesota,” says Jason Haugen, vice president of real estate for Canterbury Park. “It’s an arena, for all intents and purposes. They’ll have a plaza within the amphitheater project, with opportunities to host events there, as well.” Construction on the amphitheater is underway, and Haugen expects it will host its first concerts and other events in May 2025. The amphitheater is being built and will be run by Swervo Development. In addition to the amphitheater, Canterbury Park hosts events in the grandstand that overlooks the track, the paddock, and a new brewpub, Badger Hill Brewery. “We just have a unique experience out here,” Haugen adds. “With horse racing, think people gravitate toward that.” canterburypark.com

Let’s Rejigger That

Land O’Lakes’ Debbie Friedman-Hueller creates personal, emotional attendee touchpoints to ensure no two events are the same BY TODD R. BERGER

» A LIGHT SWITCH turned on in the head of Debbie Friedman-Hueller when she job shadowed a corporate events planner her senior year at Hamline University in St. Paul. “This is exactly who I am and what I want to do,” she remembers thinking as she learned about the role. “The collaboration, the creativity, the checking things off to-do lists. I couldn’t believe there was a career out there like this.” Today, as the manager of meeting and event operations for Land O’Lakes Inc. in Arden Hills, she leads the event operations coordinator team while also managing event planning, design, and strategy for internal, business-to-business, and business-to-consumer events. The gatherings touch nearly all 50 states, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe, and they include national sales meetings, incentive programs, trainings, education conferences, and vendor meetings. She remains happy with her career choice. “From a very early age, I just understood that you have to love what you do in order to do it, in order to make work meaningful,” she says. “It’s very important to me to show my two daughters how their mom collaborates with different people every day to create something that we all can be proud of. I love being challenged time and time again to design and deliver experiences that bring a brand to life, celebrate attendees for a job well done, or inspire an audience.” That said, Friedman-Hueller is not a fan of cookie-cutter events. She says, “My mission is to ensure that no two events that we create are ever the same. I’ve earned a reputation for looking at an event and rejiggering it, reimagining the whole thing. I enjoy pushing myself and respectfully challenging my stakeholder partners to think and do things differently, and to take what I call ‘little bets.’ It’s just really looking at each event through a new lens.” When asked for an example, Friedman-Hueller shares, “One recent program springs to mind: an awards night for a sales incentive trip. We sent out a preshow communication to attendees to come dressed as if in the 1920s. As dinner in the restaurant was winding down, our hired 1920s-era courier ran in carrying a newspaper we created and shouted ‘Extra! Extra! Come outside and read all about it!’ As attendees started funneling out of the restaurant, they walked on a red carpet across the property that led to the ballroom. We hired three dozen old-timey paparazzi using old-fashioned flash cameras.” She adds, “It was a carefully curated, high-octane, yet very personal experience that we hope attendees will look back on in five, 10 years and say, ‘Hey, remember that event?!’”
