James J. Hill House Explore upstairs and downstairs life in “Minnesota’s Downton Abbey.” Built by railroad magnate James J. Hill, this 36,000-square-foot historic Summit Avenue house in Saint Paul was completed in 1891 and was once the largest and most expensive private residence in the state. Rice Park/Landmark Center In the heart of downtown Saint Paul is scenic Rice Park. A beautiful fountain is at its center, and the park is surrounded by the historic Saint Paul Hotel, Landmark Center, Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, and the downtown Central Library—which can be recognized by its turquoise spires. Built in 1902, this building features a clock tower, turrets, and other whimsical details. Mill Ruins Park This historic site tells the story of the city’s remarkable success in the flour milling industry. Mississippi Gorge Regional Park Situated along the east and west bluffs of the Mississippi River, this park offers scenic views all year long. Life on the Water

Minnesota may not have ocean shorelines, but its natural rivers and 10,000-plus lakes offer year-round fun. The Twin Cities is home to several waterways, which serve as local destinations for swimming, paddleboarding, ice hockey, live music, and more.

Como Lake This lake in Saint Paul’s Como Regional Park offers a 1.7-mile walking trail, a fishing pier, and a boat launch for canoes, kayaks, and small electric watercrafts. Pedal boat and stand-up paddleboard rentals are also available.

Lake Hiawatha Surrounded by a 241-acre park, Lake Hiawatha is a relaxing oasis in South Minneapolis. It’s known to have good fishing year-round, as the Minnehaha Creek brings lots of carp and northern pike in and out of the lake. Visitors can also enjoy walking paths, a swimming beach, and a nearby tennis court.

Lake Nokomis Lake Nokomis is located just south of Lake Hiawatha. As one of three sailing lakes in the Minneapolis park system, it’s common to see lots of colorful sailboats on the water throughout the warmer months. Stop by Wheel Fun Rentals to take a swan-shaped pedal boat for a spin—equipped with LED lighting, you can even rent the swan boats after dark for a one-ofa-kind adventure.

Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway

For a true bike tour of Minneapolis, try the Grand Rounds. It’s one of the country’s longest continuous systems of public urban parkways, encompassing a 51-mile loop of off-street trails.

The Grand Rounds consists of seven segments throughout Minneapolis that highlight a mix of the city’s best natural and urban features: lakes, woodlands, riverbanks, skylines, trendy neighborhoods, and more.

Great Northern Greenway The Great Northern Greenway connects North and Northeast Minneapolis across the Mississippi River, passing through historic and diverse neighborhoods, commercial districts, and industrial sites. Midtown Greenway This 5.5-mile railroad corridor-turned-trail is a great way to navigate Minneapolis by bike. No bike? No problem. In 2023, Minneapolis and Saint Paul introduced e-bike share programs, which can increase the convenience of getting around for visitors. Through vendors like Lime, riders can nd, unlock, and rent electric-assisted bikes using the company’s mobile app. E-bikes make it easier to ride uphill and travel at faster speeds. Users must be 16 or older; e-bikes are permitted on city streets, in bike lanes, on trails, and shared-use paths.

MIDTOWN GREENWAY is a 5.5-mile long former railroad corridor located in South Minneapolis, with barrier-free bicycling and walking trails.
