A friend recently posted this question on social media: “What’s something you never feel guilty about splurging on?” As I scrolled through the replies, I was struck by how many people had the same answer that first came to my mind: “Travel!” Travel is essential to my family, something we love to do together, with friends, or solo. It’s not synonymous with “vacation” because it’s more about actively exploring the world and less about escaping life’s realities. For me, it started with a study abroad opportunity in Spain during my sophomore year in college. That was my first visit to another country (beyond a weekend fishing trip to Canada with my parents). It exposed me to both the beauty of a new culture with its art museums, paseos, and paellas as well as the ugliness, including getting robbed for the first time and learning details of the Spanish Civil War. My husband’s first journey out of the United States was with me after college. We decided one weekend to drive to Thunder Bay in Canada from the Twin Cities just so he could say he had been to another country. Those days, only a valid driver’s license was required, but the border crossing guard did give us a funny look when we explained why our trip was so short. That sense of adventure sparked a lifelong love for exploring the world together that has included a three-month backpacking trip across Europe, a visit to Iceland with our then-2-month-old before my maternity leave was up, and annual summer family vacations to locations that sometimes required visas and oftentimes came with explanations to others of where we had been, such OUR LATEST FAMILY TRIP WAS TO THE as Bosnia, Andorra, and the Republic of Georgia. There you’ll find artifacts from world wars, vintage clothing, and items from life as early as the 1890s. Outdoor space is vast in this area. For a beautiful bike ride, Sleepy Eye Lake Bike Trail is a 3.12-mile paved trail that winds around Sleepy Eye Lake. For a brisk walk, just look to one of nine parks in town, with amenities like swimming beaches, hockey rinks, a skate park, campsites, and numerous baseball and softball fields. Sleepy Eye is also celebrating its birthday this year with tons of fun activities starting September 18. What better spot to spend a weekend than the Bed-andBreakfast Capital of Minnesota? Located just two hours from the Twin Cities, Lanesboro is smack dab in the Driftless Area and features spring-fed streams, paved bike trails, a thriving art scene, and tons of yummy food. Take time in the warmer weather to bike, shop charming boutiques, or make your way down the river in whatever way you see fit—tubing, kayaking, or canoeing. Sample the local fare at Pedal Pushers Café or the High Court Pub. See the professional live theater troupes at the Lanesboro Community Theater or the St. Mane Theatre, where shows are available to entertain guests year round. At the intersection of history and culture is Pipestone. Learn about the vast history on a self-guided walking tour

here exactly “up north” begins and ends is up for perennial debate, but few would argue the Brainerd Lakes Area falls smack dab in the middle of the debate. With its sprawling lakes, award-winning golf courses, charming downtowns, and exciting attractions, this central-Minnesota vacation destination continues to draw new and repeat visitors for timeless summer fun. The area’s newest attraction is dedicated to one of its oldest draws: the common loon. Located in downtown Crosslake, the National Loon Center will be home to an interactive museum scheduled to open in 2024. Until then, visitors can check out the temporary outdoor exhibits, stop by The Nest visitor center, and take an educational boat tour on the Loons & Lakes StewardShip, the new floating classroom. The loon’s call is a quintessential part of the Brainerd Lakes Area experience, whether you stay on a big lake like Gull or Pelican, or one of the smaller lakes on the Whitefish Chain. and operated for generations. Whether you prefer hotel-style accommodations, a small log cabin, or a luxurious townhome, you will find it here. One resort that offers all of the above and more is Grand View Lodge on Gull Lake. The sprawling property recently completed a $50 million expansion that added a new 60-room boutique hotel, indoor/outdoor pool, and what it claims to be the largest outdoor Jacuzzi in Minnesota. Guests and area visitors can take advantage of Grand View’s many amenities, including the full-service spa, multiple restaurants, two championship golf courses, and the summer concert series. Speaking of golf, the Brainerd Lakes Area is one of Minnesota’s top spots for teeing up. The Classic at Madden’s, Deacon’s Lodge at Breezy Point, and the Legacy Courses at Cragun’s all made Golf Digest’s top 25 list this year based on the magazine’s seven scoring criteria: shot options, challenge, layout variety, distinctiveness, aesthetics, conditioning, character, and its newest category, fun. Minnesota golf legend Tom Lehman is behind a $10 million renovation and expansion project at Cragun’s that’s set to be completed in 2023. Ready to grab a drink after your round? Nisswa’s Roundhouse Brewery boasts one of the area’s best patios and has expanded to offer axe throwing and weekly events including bingo and meat raffles, with proceeds benefiting local charities. Two more breweries—Big Axe Brewing Co. and Main Street Ale House—can be found in downtown Nisswa, and Brainerd is home to the area’s only cocktail room at 5Rocks Distilling Co.

For family fun, it doesn’t get much better than Nisswa’s weekly turtle races. Held every Wednesday afternoon from June through mid-August, the races have been a summer tradition for more than 50 years. Kids and adults alike line up and pay $5 for their chance at picking the fastest turtle. Only one turtle will win, but everyone will have a good time. If you’re looking for something slightly speedier, Brainerd International Raceway hosts a wide variety of events all summer long, including drag races, motorcycle and superbike races, power cruises, and more. The annual Lakes Jam music festival (June 23-25) features camping, racing, and performances by headliners Tesla, Jon Pardi, Cole Swindell, and cover band Hairball. Surrounding the towns and tourist attractions is what brought people to this area in the first place: the great outdoors. Popular pursuits include biking on the roughly 120-mile Paul Bunyan State Trail, paddling on the Crow Wing River, boating and fishing on area lakes (fishing guides and boat rentals available), and zip-lining through the trees with Brainerd Zip Line Tour. No trip to the Brainerd Lakes Area is complete without a photo with the big man himself: Paul Bunyan. There’s one outside the classic A-Pine Restaurant in Pequot Lakes, but the most popular Paul sits outside Paul Bunyan Land in Brainerd. The 26-foot-tall talking lumberjack has been greeting visitors by name since 1954. Top it off with a scoop from The Chocolate Ox in downtown Nisswa and a souvenir or two from a local boutique, and you’ve got yourself an Up North vacation to remember."" MINNESOTAMONTH LY.COM

hybrid cyclist, or casual cruiser, Minnesota’s diverse topography offers something for enthusiasts of all interests and skill levels. From smooth surfaces to rugged terrain, there is a wide range of trails across the state that will meet all of your biking needs. Fans of rock beds and lakeside views will go wild for Split Rock Wilds, one of the newest and most challenging mountain biking trails in the state. Located in Lake County along Minnesota’s North Shore, Split Rock Wilds currently offers 31 trails that traverse over 21 miles. The attraction is a series of loops between Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and Beaver Bay’s Cove Point Lodge. Dave Cizmas, a recreation forester in Lake County, says the area’s topography is what sets Split Rock Wilds apart from Minnesota’s other trails. “The Beaver Bay region of the North Shore is very rugged, and the trails at Split Rock Wilds reflect this,” Cizmas says. “Overall, the trails are much rockier and more challenging than almost any other trail system in the state.” For the hardcore cyclists, there are 13 advanced trails and four expert trails along the route. But Cizmas notes there are shorter loops toward the south end that are a good option for beginners or families hitting the trail. “There are easier trails near Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, but as you travel north and east, the trails become more difficult,” he says. For a break from the challenging rocky terrain, there are a number of Lake Superior overlooks along the trails where riders can make a pit stop and enjoy some of Minnesota’s finest views. Construction of these trails has been an ongoing process over the last few years. The first phase of “dirt work” started in 2020, and the second phase was completed in the summer of 2021.

But the team is still working to expand the trails even further. “It’s kind of like art,” Cizmas says. “It’s never gonna be truly completed.” Over the next few years, they plan to build more trails for a total of about 50 miles. A grand opening of Split Rock Wilds is currently in the works for mid-July. The festivities will include a 30-mile bike race stretching from Silver Bay to Cove Point, where 200 riders will face boulder gardens, elevation climbing, and other challenges that will put their cycling skills to the test. The race is scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. on Sat., July 16, 2022. To keep up with all things Split Rock Wilds, head over to the Lake County Mountain Bike Trails Facebook page.

North Shore mountain bikers should also check out Duluth Traverse, a multi-use, single-track trail system that currently stretches more than 85 miles across the city. Perfect for beginner and intermediate cyclists, the route is mostly flow trail with a few rocky sections here and there. The trail system continues to be updated periodically, in hopes of linking Duluth’s urban environment to its parks and green spaces. What was once an iron ore mine in the CrosbyIronton area is now considered one of the best mountain bike trail centers in the United States. Nestled within the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area is a 50-mile trail system with more than 30 routes, designed for all skill levels. The looping routes are characterized by wooded areas, steep hills, and closeup views of former pit mines that filled with water and became lakes. Lebanon Hills Regional Park in Eagan contains more than 12 miles of wooded, single-track mountain bike trails. The trail incorporates plenty of challenges for bikers of all levels, such as rolling hills, bridges, rocky areas, berms, and jumps. Black and red trails are marked along the way for more advanced riders. Mountain bikers in the Twin Cities don’t have to travel far to hit the trails. The single-track trails in Minneapolis’ Theodore Wirth Park offer riders a brief respite from urban life. These trails have varying levels of difficulty, with technical features like drops, jumps, downhill switchbacks, and more. Maybe you prefer skinny tires and smooth rides over rough terrain. In that case, Minnesota also has plenty of paved bike trails. Built on a former Chicago Great Western Railroad line, the Cannon Valley Trail runs for 19.7 miles along the Cannon River. The trail offers views of the surrounding scenery, from overhanging cliffs to extensive wetlands along the river valley. It runs through the cities of Cannon Falls, Welch, and Red Wing, highlighting all the beauty that southeastern Minnesota has to offer. When complete, the Gitchi- Gami State Trail along the North Shore will be an 86-mile trail between Two Harbors and Grand Marais. Over 33 miles of the trail have already been completed, taking cyclists through birch and aspen forests, crossing waterfalls, and offering scenic overlooks of Lake Superior.

CUYUNA COUNTRY STATE RECREATION AREA

Cutting through forests and stretching from the Mississippi River to the Boundary Waters, the Mesabi Trail is truly one of a kind. This 145-mile paved trail immerses riders in the surrounding nature, passing by creeks, ponds, and emerald green lakes made from the pits of old iron ore mines. The trail makes its way through 28 communities, offering plenty of opportunities to pull over and explore the history and culture of the area. For those looking to get to know the Twin Cities, Grand Rounds Scenic Byway is the ultimate bike tour of Minneapolis. This 51-mile urban bike loop passes through the downtown riverfront, the chain of lakes, northeast, and other notable areas in the city. Brown’s Creek State Trail is 5.9 miles long, connecting the Gateway State Trail in Grant to the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway in Stillwater. Situated on a former railroad grade, this trail passes by a trout stream covered by a forest canopy, historical buildings, golf courses, and even an audio listening station where riders can hear bird songs, frog calls, and other sounds of wildlife. Mesabi Trail

145-mile trail from Grand Rapids to the Boundary Waters

Looking for an adventure? Try traversing the 145 miles of paved paths on the Mesabi Trail. From Grand Rapids to the Boundary Waters, visitors will find an asphalt trail built on old logging and mining roads, abandoned railroad beds and highways, and some city streets. Twenty-eight access points are available for starting points. Along the way, gaze at the sprawling forests of northeast Minnesota, lakes, creeks, ponds, and wetlands. During your journey you’ll ride across the tallest bridge in Minnesota, just south of Virginia. Near Embarrass, riders glide over a floating bridge. Keep an eye out for abandoned mine pits now filled with water that shine a brilliant green.

Two trails of note in Grand Rapids are near the Tioga Recreation Area. At Tioga, you’ll find a 25-mile single-track, purpose-built trail for mountain biking and fat tire biking. The multi-level trails are great for the whole family. Riders can test their abilities at the Pathfinder Playground Skills Course, with three trail options that progressively get harder. When you’re done biking, take a walk over to the reclaimed Tioga Mine Pit Lake with crystal-blue water, or Pokegama Lake, which offers opportunities for fishing, floating, or paddling. For a ride with a reward at the end, the segment from Grand Rapids to Cohasset takes riders to Rapids Brewing Company. TIOGA RECREATION AREA TRAILHEAD/PARKING: 23946 Tioga Beach Rd., Cohasset, Minn. hrow a dart at a map of minnesota from September through early October and you’ve got a good chance of hitting a “top” place to see fall colors. But if you dig a bit and follow the rabbit hole of recommendations, hiking the Oberg Mountain Loop Trail on the North Shore almost always lands in the top spot. It’s not just the promise of prized reds and golds of one of the northernmost stands of sugar maples that packs the trailhead parking lot every fall weekend. The moderate 3-mile trail near Tofte is mostly level and delivers major payoff at each of the seven lookouts over the Superior National Forest and Lake Superior. Plus, the paper-white bark from the birch trees and evergreens of fir and pine trees add dimension to nature’s masterpiece mosaic splashed across the horizon. M I NNES OTA M O NT H LY.CO M

LUTSEN RESORT

As if the hike needs more pizazz, forest service naturalists keep things fresh by changing out an interpretive trail to teach visitors about different aspects of this place: native plants, wildflowers, the forces that shaped Oberg Mountain, and even crypto biology. Huh? “Big Foot and other big things that might be living up there,” explains interpretation and education specialist Steve Robertsen. One thing you can’t control is the weather. Wet conditions may make the rocky overlooks slippery, and banks of fog can frustratingly block everything you came to see. North Shore weather is famously finicky, but if it’s not ideal, just wait a half-hour. Daytrippers have less wiggle room for patience so if you really want to hike the Oberg Mountain Loop Trail, stay a night or two. If you must come on a weekend, reservations for campgrounds, hotels, and vacation rentals are essential. Open since 1885, Lutsen Resort is the OG recreational highlight of the North Shore and offers enhanced programming to enrich guests’ experiences. Favorites include the on-demand beach bonfires, where the waves of the Big Lake meet the shore, which is also an excellent spot for stargazing. The new owners of North Country Cottages have renovated and redecorated their three cuties near Cascade River (about 20 miles north of Tofte). New to the mix are Klarhet’s four-season geodesic domes in Lutsen. Lockport Marketplace & Deli serves an all-around terrific breakfast. If it’s too cool for the patio, the dining room feels like a time capsule of a north-woods cabin. The Clearview General Store recently doubled its size and knows what its customers want and need: everything from dehydrated hiking meals (for

September is filled with culinary festivals across the state. Lobster Week features dining deals, from food trucks to fine-dining restaurants. The Maine Cheese Guild celebrates its craft and community with a festival in Pittsfield, and Maine’s favorite dessert, the whoopie pie, headlines a festival at the Piscataquis Valley Fairgrounds. visitmaine.com

It also carries an impressive selection of puzzles, books, and goods by local makers (including scrumptious yarn colors by Jamie Rex, of North Road Knits, and game boards and butcher blocks by the wife-and-husband team Rebecca and Ian Barrett, of Wilder Woodshop). For an unforgettable hiking day, drop a pin on your Google Map for the Trestle Inn, south of Tofte. Built as a restorative pit stop for snowmobilers, this borderline off-the-grid, cash-only restaurant and saloon satisfies with a worthy burger and fries. The outdoor seating is dog-friendly, too. If you’re thinking, “We’re this far north, we may as well go on to Grand Marais,” you’d be right. It’s just 30 minutes from the Oberg Mountain trailhead. Arrive in time for a paper bag filled with cinnamon cake donuts at World’s Best Donuts. (They close when they sell out, usually between 1-3 p.m.) Then head next door and browse one of the smallest, best curated independent bookstores, Drury Lane Books. Seasonal businesses grind to a halt in mid-October. You can always grab a coffee from Java Moose, skip rocks in the bay, and book a Nordic sauna session at the new Sisu and Löyly, which is right on the water and has two big picture windows overlooking East Bay and Artists' Point. A fire pit is included, but bring your new North Road Knits hat. The Oberg Mountain trailhead parking lot is located 2 miles up Onion River Road off Highway 61, just north of Tofte.

undreds of huskies bark and howl, lunge, and leap, whipping up snow along the spine of Excelsior’s historic business district. It’s the one day each year when snow is hauled in to fill the main street. Behind the parade barriers, the sidewalks—packed during the summer with al fresco diners—are three-deep with bundled-up spectators. The dogs fall silent the moment each team is released at the starting line. “All they want to do is pull,” says Bill Damberg, a local small-business owner and co-founder of the Klondike Dog Derby, which attracts some 30 teams from as far away as Alaska and Canada for a two-day event culminating in a 40-mile race on Lake Minnetonka. The Klondike Dog Derby represents the spirit of Excelsior: A modern expression rooted in the past (the derby had a life in the late 1930s and ’40s), nurtured by the business community and embraced by residents and visitors alike. It’s one of several unique winter events that draw thousands to this Mayberry-like destination within a half-hour drive west of the Twin Cities. The 2021 opening of Hotel Excelsior’s Suites on Water Street is helping transform Excelsior from a day trip outing to an overnight destination. Locals find plenty of ways to celebrate winter, starting with Christkindlsmarkt, the open-air German Christmas market beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving, and culminating with the North American Pond Hockey Championship in February. But when it’s time to warm M I NNES OTA M O NT H LY.CO M

up, there may be no better season in which to become acquainted with Excelsior. There are at least a dozen restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries, plus a concentrated collection of highly curated shops packed with personality for respite from the cold (along with holiday gift shopping for every type of person). At the center of Excelsior’s newly minted one-block designation on the National Register of Historic Places is chef-owner Eli Wollenzien’s original Coalition (a second location is in the Minneapolis neighborhood of Linden Hills). Its windowfront tables and bar give a lucky dozen people front-row seats to the sidewalk scene on Water Street. The entire dining room exudes a welcoming warmth lent from the building ’s original materials, including exposed brick and a pressed tin ceiling. “It’s just crazy in town during the races,” says Wollenzien, who also owns Red Sauce Rebellion across the street. “Our restaurants are packed.” Those in the know count on a fast turnover for a table at Olive’s Fresh for a crispy wood-fired pizza or reserve a heated outdoor “clam pod” at family-friendly Excelsior Brewing Company for locally brewed beer. Staying late? There’s live music many evenings at 318 Cafe and adventurous cocktails at the underground Rebel Room. The big game changer in town, though, is the Hotel Excelsior, with four beautifully appointed guest suites with full kitchens, directly above the Faribault Woolen Mill Co. “Hotel” is a bit of misnomer. There is no front desk; guests use a keypad to gain access from the street and to their suite. Amenities include the shops and restaurants

as well as the lake, park-like Commons, and the year-round Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail for those who want to bring their fat-tire bikes, cross-country skis, or snowshoes. Hotel owners Tyler Nelson and Jeff Verdoorn applied vision, patience, and a lot of listening to the city’s Heritage Preservation Commission to transform the condemned 1895 building at the center of Water Street into a fully contributing adaptive reuse project that brings value to the community. They also created an authentic sense of place by tapping another Water Street entrepreneur, Kate Regan of The Sitting Room, for design services. Regan gave each suite a distinct design that taps the lake-life energy, historic narrative, and classic style of Excelsior. Nelson procured the coffee table books from Leipold’s Gifts & Antiques—a 50-year mainstay of Water Street—and added a Faribault Woolen Mill Co. Lake Minnetonka throw to every room. “I want to showcase local businesses every chance I can,” Nelson says. “Tyler’s done an admirable job on restoring this building,” says six-decade resident and Heritage Preservation Commission member Bob Bolles. “And it’s part of his work that helped us get this National Registry recognition,” he adds. “It’s hard to get people with the heart that Tyler has. This guy is a hero for the city.” Nelson also plans to open his new coffee concept on the street level of the building. In line with the tongue-in-cheek style of the hotel that’s not really a hotel, the coffee shop is called The Lobby. Packed with passion for preservation and hospitality, it’s on track to be the coziest spot in town.""

lose your eyes and envision expansive prairies, rich farmland, and budding foliage—a place that reminds you of a simpler time. Though far from simple, Mankato imparts an air of relaxation, where visitors become instant friends and entertainment is best served au naturel. Between a diverse cityscape and deep-woods panorama, you’ll soon see why this southern Minnesota town is a hub of endless activities. Known for its great parks and trails, Mankato boasts a variety of adventures for outdoor enthusiasts. Looking for somewhere wooded to spend the day? Check out one of Mankato’s many parks, such as Minneopa State Park. Visitors young and old can take advantage of this 4,600-acre preserve and walk one of many trails or take a scenic drive through the park to catch a glimpse of bison roaming their native lands. Be sure to stop for a break and a picture next to the Instagram-worthy Minneopa Falls. Here visitors can enjoy a regional zoo and playground on the sprawling grounds, where walking trails are peppered with gorgeous flowers, stone gardens, and a cheery canopy of springtime hues. Pay a visit to Bent River Outfitter to rent kayaks, paddleboards, and gear. Located in old-town Mankato, Bent River offers guided tours on the river, along with unique events such as a monthly late-night Full Moon Float. Make sure to check out the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway, which follows the Minnesota River and offers views of the many lakes, ravines, bluffs, natural prairies, and forested areas that inhabit the region. One of only 22 scenic byways in the state, the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway truly highlights the stunning river bluffs and guides guests through land steeped in historical significance. After spending the day taking in nature, explore downtown Mankato and North Mankato. Throughout downtown Mankato and in the city center, breathtaking sculptures dot the sidewalks. The CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour showcases 31 installations that change annually. Sculptors throughout the country create the works on display, and since the program’s establishment in 2011, 27 sculptures have been added to the greater-Mankato permanent public art collection. SILO ART

Mankato’s artistic intrigue doesn’t stop there. Silo Art, created by Guido van Helten (an Australian-born visual artist and photographer), towers over the area and is a source of pride for the community. The piece, a large mural on several grouped grain silos, illustrates the shared values of multiplicity, inclusion, and participation that Mankato embodies. Just a few minutes away, South Front Street is home to the 410 Project, a community art space that hosts frequently changing installations. After an active day, a cool drink awaits at the Mankato Brewery in North Mankato. Opened in 2012, the Mankato Brewery’s beers embrace the very community in which the founders live. Catch a glimpse into what it takes to make a beer on a tour of the brewery, or simply gaze at the brewing system through the clear window in the taproom. For a satisfying meal, Dino’s Pizzeria is a North Mankato staple. Dino’s makes fresh, mouthwatering pizza in its brick oven—and there’s no better place to get your fill of New Yorkstyle pizza and innovative antipasti than in this inviting setting. For a more relaxed dining experience, seek out Pub 500, located in the heart of downtown Mankato. There, you’ll be able to sample classic American fare and more than 75 beers from around the world. During the warmer seasons, Pub 500 hosts a large patio complete with fire pits and a wonderful view of Mankato’s bustling downtown. The true beauty of Mankato is that it has the capability to be whatever type of excursion you want it to be. If nature calls to you, there is no shortage of trails and sights to see. If you want to experience the culture and history of the area, museums and art galleries are just around the corner. The wealth of wildlife, history, nature, and attractions make Mankato a place where experiences—and memories—abound. !!

vacation I didn’t know I needed. A mix of sand, surf, and beautiful sunsets, this quick five-day trip was affordable, accessible, and easy to navigate. It was also my first international trip in a long time because of COVID-19 restrictions and decades since I had first visited Mexico, and the journey felt indulgent yet safe. My friends and I had been talking about a girls’ weekend for months and finally booked a trip to have something to look forward to as winter dragged on. When we picked Puerto Vallarta, it was both a relief and a mystery if we actually would get to go, as the Omicron variant was shutting down lots of travel across the globe. We decided to try our luck with the future dates but also purchased trip insurance in case it didn’t work out.

Puerto Vallarta is a direct and very affordable flight on both Delta and Sun Country airlines from the Twin Cities. I used some frequent flyer miles on Delta for my flight, while my friend had a free voucher for her Sun Country flight. While Puerto Vallarta was a new destination for me, it’s clearly not a secret to a number of Minnesotans. Both our flights were full, on the Wednesday flight down and the Sunday return flight. We also made friends with a couple from North Branch on one of our excursions and met other Minnesotans at our resort. Many people I chatted with said they were return vacationers who visit the area annually. It was impossible to see everything we wanted on this quick trip, but we may be like those other Midwesterners and return again for more. Here’s a look at what we did pack in, with tips and tricks we learned along the way.

Day 1

The nearly five-hour flight from MSP to Puerto Vallarta may seem long but, thankfully, both of our plane rides were direct

and departed within 45 minutes of each other at a reasonable mid-morning hour. We carpooled to terminals 1 and 2 together and were reunited in Mexico by 2 p.m., ready to enjoy the 80-degree temperatures and escape the snowy weather back home. We were through customs quickly and efficiently—unlike the overcrowded MSP wait on our return to the United States— and had been warned to ignore the vacation rental hawkers in the airport hallway as we made our way to the taxi stand for a ride to our resort. Traffic was very busy for a weekday mid-afternoon, and I was glad I wasn’t driving or renting a car to navigate the area. Our cab driver was friendly and pointed out some landmarks along the 20-minute drive to the all-inclusive Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, an all-inclusive resort in Nuevo Vallarta, where we booked our first two nights as part of a special media rate. Sometimes first impressions make all the difference when you’re traveling and in a foreign country, out of your comfort zone. For me, Grand Velas was exactly what I was expecting—and then some. There’s a big wow factor as you walk into the open-air seating area and spy peacocks strolling through lush gardens, M I NNES OTA M O NT H LY.CO M

Day 5

For our final day in Mexico, breakfast included watching the colorful yellow birds pick off pastries at a neighbor’s table as we enjoyed our strong coffee and weak eggs Benedict. We knew it was time to go home but also wished we had a few more days to explore the area. We walked the neighborhood, nodded at the others power walking the streets, and watched the large lizard near the pool surreptitiously climb the pool palm tree. On our

way to the airport, our driver informed us that Sundays in Puerto Vallarta are very busy because the airport is one of the few ports for both international and Mexican locations along the peninsula. It was crowded, crazy, and chaotic. But it made me realize Mexico is a perfect destination for a quick winter getaway, something I was just discovering—but that others have known for a long time. A word about all-inclusive properties: My only other experience with an all-inclusive vacation was years ago on a Disney cruise with my family. It took me several conversations with others to figure out what felt so diff erent for this trip: I had everything I needed in one spot, which is both a luxury and a disincentive to explore the rest of the area and Puerto Vallarta. All of my entertainment, meals, and leisure activities were at the resort, for better or worse. For some families, that’s exactly what they want. For example, one kid can order chicken fingers and cheesecake to the room while the parents eat at the on-property restaurants. For me, after a day or two, I’d want to spend more of my own money on excursions away from the resort to get a better sense of the destination. ""

PHOTOS VEL AS RESORTS

The promise of whales and waves, snorkeling and sailing got us up early on the fourth day of our trip as we took a taxi from Casa Velas to the nearby Puerto Vallarta terminal. I highly recommend this popular five-hour snorkel tour with Vallarta Adventures and the professional, personable crew. I was skeptical as we set sail from the port about 8 a.m., but the half-day trip proved fun as we snorkeled, lounged, and grooved to a fun playlist. For about $100 each, this cruise was a steal. We watched dolphins on the way out, whales on the way back, and felt like we saw some of Mexico’s true wonders along the water. When we got back to shore, I wish we would have spent time exploring Puerto Vallarta’s downtown because it was our only chance to see the area on this short trip. That afternoon the resort arranged for a doctor to administer the COVID-19 tests that the United States required for entry. We were relieved that we all got negative results, but also joked that staying another 10 days would be OK. We celebrated with some more margaritas, and that evening at dinner made friends with Canadians, Mexicans, and other Americans talking politics, travel, and international intrigue.
