Camperdown Mill, built c. 1876
Dear Reader, I am thrilled to tell you that reading is alive and well in Greenville County! Over 16,000 babies, children, teens and adults signed up for Summer Reading in June and July. Five library branches saw an increase in the number of babies who had someone register to read to them. The total number of adult participants exceeded last year’s figure and almost all of our special events for children were enjoyed by standing-room-only audiences. In addition to taking care of summer readers, during these past two months we began incorporating RFID (radio frequency identification) technology into our operations. Library staff and volunteers have been placing RFID tags in almost every item to make it easier for you to check out library materials, including multiple items simultaneously. RFID technology makes staff work processes more efficient, providing us the opportunity to offer more one-onone assistance, and we’re receiving lots of positive feedback from library users, too. Look for this new technology coming to a library near you over the next few months. Enjoy the rest of your summer,
Bev P.S. Mother Goose on the Loose is coming to Greer! Babies one to 24 months old experience rhymes, rhythm and fun. Also, Toddler Tales—30 minutes of stories, music and movement for toddlers over 19 months—is expanding to Pelham Road and Simpsonville library locations.

The Greenville County Library System has been awarded a grant from the Humanities CouncilSC in support of Weaving Our History, a project designed to create a lasting record of the economic and cultural impact of the textile industry in the Upstate. In the mid-1800s, the textile industry emerged in Greenville County and grew so much that by the 1920s, it was known as the Textile Capital of the World. Textile manufacturing was Greenville's first economic engine fostering a unique cultural and societal structure that served as a foundation for community development--impacting education, social life and regional sports.

American Spinning Company Contains photographs from the private collection of Robert "Bob" H. Duke of Greenville of the mill village and people of the American Spinning Company. Organized in 1895 by Oscar Sampson, James Orr, and Jacob Cagle, American Spinning Company began as a two-story wooden building, but grew rapidly adding a new brick building and other additions by the turn of the century. Despite changing hands several times over the decades, the mill continued its operation until June 27th, 1990. The mill building still stands today; however, a majority of the village was razed.

Childcare Training Author Wilt Browning grew up in an Easley mill village during the 1940s and 1950s and chronicled his childhood experience in Linthead: Growing up in a Carolina Cotton Mill. The term “linthead” was actually a derogatory term for the mill workers who were often stigmatized for their poverty. Cotton floating in the air of the mill stuck to the workers’ hair and clothes. Browning says “I really enjoyed growing up on mill hill…I didn’t know we were poor until I was grown, because I was too busy just enjoying baseball, bicycles, iron wheel wagons, delivering papers and things like that to spend much time thinking about that.” The library system is excited to celebrate Greenville’s textile heritage throughout the fall.
