Dear Reader, Because this time of year can be more hectic than usual and wintry weather can interfere with your plans, I invite you to take advantage of the many convenient services offered by your public library system. When you can’t get to the library, call any of our locations and a staff member will be happy to look up something for you or renew your library materials if no one else is waiting for them. You can also log in to your library account to renew items, pay fines or request an item be put on hold. You can even create a wish list of items you’d like to borrow in the future. Haven’t set up your online account yet? No problem. Any staff member will be happy to help you in person or walk you through the process over the phone. You can also get answers to your questions by calling 527-9258 or sending an email to asklibrarian@greenvillelibrary.org. Each day on an ad hoc basis, staff members have the privilege of assisting someone as they create a resume or set up a spreadsheet; or download a book, song or magazine from the library’s website. If you would like to schedule a time for us to work with you on your specific needs, try out our new service—Book a Librarian. For more details, see page 8 of this newsletter or call 527-9258. Remember, your public library is at your service. Just click on Need Help at the top of the homepage of greenvillelibrary.org to discover a variety of ways to get in touch with us.

WORKSHOP

FEBRUARY 28, 10A-12:30P, MAIN African American Genealogy programs return to the library in February as part of our Black History Month celebration. These programs are uniquely suited to help those who are tracing their African American family members back to and before the Civil War. Many who start this search find it particularly challenging due to the lack of individuals' names in census records and other documents prior to 1870. To help in this quest, volunteers and staff of the South Carolina Room have produced two volumes—Slave Name Index of Greenville County, Probate Records 1787-1864 and Slave Name Index of Pickens County, Probate Court Records 1828-1864. These resources, along with guided assistance from local African American genealogy experts, will be highlighted in the workshop on February 28. Reservation recommended. Call the South Carolina Room at 242-5000 x2169 to register for this workshop.

The United States Constitution requires schools to respect the right of all external organizations to distribute flyers to students at school if the school permits any such organization to distribute flyers. Accordingly, the school cannot discriminate among groups wishing to distribute flyers at school and does not endorse the content of any flyer distributed at school. The school encourages parents to assist their children in making choices appropriate for them.
