Dear Readers,

Feb/Mar 2014

Some of the most rewarding work that we do at the library includes the creation of programming that invites you to explore your world. Board of Trustees

During February, we celebrate Black History Month by kicking off a series of programs to help those researching their family tree. On February 1, the Hughes Main Library is hosting a workshop that features three local experts, each with an extensive background in genealogical research. They will share important lessons learned for everyone from the novice to the advanced searcher of family history, and offer valuable guidance for those with African-American lineage.

Mr. Joe L. Allen (Vice-Chairman) • Mrs. Susan Barry

In March, we recognize both a national and regional celebration. In honor of Women’s History Month, Chautauqua presents a Clara Barton program on March 18 and 22. If you have children in your family, be sure to pencil in “Adventures in History–Japan” on March 11, and our weekly bilingual story times, to celebrate Upstate International Month.

Mission To serve Greenville County as the best provider of guided access to quality resources for information, education and leisure.

Sincerely,

Beverly James Executive Director

Lives change @ your library Meet Maurice Taylor Maurice Taylor relocated to Greenville with the goal of pursuing new job opportunities. He had the required skills for the work he wanted to do, but still needed others that would be helpful for his job search such as basic computer skills and internet searching techniques. Maurice came to the Hughes Main Library frequently and learned to use the computers in a specially designated area, the Job Station. Library staff guided him through each of the steps needed for his job search: developing a resume, performing online searches for job postings and completing applications. His perseverance—combined with the assistance of library staff—paid off. Maurice began receiving calls for interviews and landed not one but two jobs. “The library is a wonderful place,” he offers as he talks about the Job Station and how it has opened job opportunities for him. The Job Station is located on the upper level of the Hughes Main Library.

The Hollingsworth-Magill Memorial Globe The Hollingsworth Magill Memorial globe was donated to the Greenville County Library System by philanthropists Arthur and Holly Magill in 1964, when the Main Library was on Main Street. One of several made by Rand McNally, the globe incorporated the most advanced cartography that existed at that time. The launch of the Russian satellite Sputnik in 1957 and the American satellite Explorer 1 in 1958 made it possible for humans to see what the Earth looked like from space for the first time. When a new library was built on College Street in 1970, the globe became its focal point. The globe moved again in 2002 to the new Hughes Main Library. Join us in saying “Happy 50th Birthday” to our globe this year!
