WOMEN’S HISTORY HIGHLIGHT: One of our original Steel Magnolias, Eliza Ann Grier. CA. 1861-1902 Eliza Ann Grier was born a slave between 1861 and 1864 yet she graduated with honors from Scotia Female Seminary (now Barber Scotia College) and attended Fisk University, Nashville, with the goal of becoming a teacher. She earned a degree in education from Fisk in 1891. At some point during her years at Fisk, Grier decided to become a medical doctor for she could “benefit her race more as a physician than as a teacher.” She gained admission to the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. The College did not provide a scholarship so she reverted to the strategy she employed at Fisk, alternately working and studying for six years until she completed her medical degree. Dr. Grier became the first African-American woman licensed to practice medicine in Georgia, but moved her practice to Greenville, S.C. about 1898. She specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. She remained in Greenville three years before contracting influenza in 1901. Her illness forced the close of her practice and she returned to Georgia. Tragically, after struggling for years to become a physician, Dr. Eliza Ann Grier died of complications from a stroke in Albany, Georgia, in 1902 after only five years of medical practice.
