African American genealogical research is particularly challenging due to the lack of individuals' names in census records and other documents prior to 1870. To help in this quest, volunteers and staff of the South Carolina Room have produced several volumes, including Slave Name Indexes compiled from Probate Records for Greenville County, Laurens County, Pendelton District/Anderson County, and Pickens County. These resources, along with guided assistance from local African-American genealogy experts, will be highlighted in this workshop on February 24.
