Celebrate Upstate International Month
Dear Reader, As part of the Library System’s recent strategic planning process, the Board of Trustees and staff adopted a new vision and mission, codified our values and affirmed our code of service as well as established goals and objectives for the next three years. In the right-hand column on this page you’ll find the Library System’s mission statement: to champion literacy, inspire learning and foster community connection. We strive to fulfill our purpose by providing a vast collection of materials in a variety of formats for all ages, by offering assistance in using technology and the multitude of information resources available, and by hosting opportunities for you to explore your world through programs, classes and presentations. In February we are presenting genealogy programs in recognition of Black History Month, featuring our awardwinning Slave Name Index Greenville County, SC From Probate Records 1787 located in the South Carolina Room at the Hughes Main Library. In March we have Women’s History Month programs as well as several activities in support of Upstate International Month. Check out our complete calendar of events online at greenvillelibrary.org. Whether you are checking out the library for the first time or are a long-standing patron, we’re glad you’re here! Let us help you discover and take full advantage of all your public library has to offer. We are at your service!

African-American Genealogy African-American Genealogy programs return to the library in February as part of our Black History Month celebration. These programs are uniquely suited to help those who are tracing their African-American family members back to and before the Civil War. Many who start this type of search find it particularly challenging due to the lack of individual and family names in census records and other documents prior to 1870. To help in this quest, volunteers and staff of the South Carolina Room have produced two volumes--Slave Name Index of Greenville County, Probate Records 1787-1864 and Slave Name Index of Pickens County, Probate Court Records 1828-1864. These resources, along with guided assistance from local African-American genealogy experts, will be highlighted in the workshop on February 28. Reservation required.
