Jun/Jul 2014 Calendar of Events Lives Change @ Your Library p. 7 Summer Reading Guide p. 11-15

Dear Reader, Summer is here and I invite you to explore your world by taking advantage of the many resources and exciting learning opportunities your library system has to offer for all ages. Whether you’re looking for a good book to listen to on your next road trip, a travel DVD to watch at home, a magazine to download to your tablet or world music to stream on your smartphone, your local library staff can connect you to something familiar or help you discover something new. Since you are going to be reading this summer anyway, I encourage you sign up for Summer Reading to take advantage of the incentives we’re offering for readers of all ages. Adult summer readers can earn the chance to enter a drawing for a $150 gift card generously donated by QuikTrip. Children who meet their reading challenge can enter a drawing for a oneyear family membership to The Children’s Museum of the Upstate. With so many ways to explore your world this summer, you might be wondering where to start. Want to discover historic locations right here in Greenville County? Pick up a copy of our Greenville County Driving Tour of Historic Sites for just $4 at your local library. Wish you could learn a new language? Freely use one of the online language databases available via greenvillelibrary.org. Want your kids to have some science fun? Bring them to see Mr. Bond and the Science Guys at a library location near you during June. Curious about African art? Meet David Roop at the Hughes Main Library on June 25th when he shares some of his collection with us.

WHAT IS EARLY LITERACY?

Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing long before they can actually read and write.

CAN’T I JUST WAIT UNTIL MY CHILD STARTS SCHOOL AND LET THE TEACHERS TAKE CARE OF THIS? Don’t wait. Shared Early Literacy experiences will be very rewarding for both of you and will help prepare your child for later reading and writing success.

HOW DO I CREATE THESE EARLY LITERACY EXPERIENCES?

TALK, READ, WRITE, SING and PLAY with your child. These activities will help build essential early literacy skills.

AGES 0-35 MONTHS Welcome to our Summer Reading program just for babies and toddlers—because it’s never too early to start reading with your children.

EARLY LITERACY ACTIVITIES CHALLENGE • As you participate in an early literacy activity from your baby’s log, put a checkmark on one point of the appropriate star. • After you have 40 checks, go to the library where you registered. • Show your Early Literacy Activities log to staff and get a free board book.* * One book per household, daycare or group. Titles may vary.

PRINT MOTIVATION I love books.

Reading over summer vacation is more than just fun! Research shows that it can help children maintain their reading skills and leave them better prepared for the school year ahead.

PRINT AWARENESS I see words. LETTER KNOWLEDGE I know my ABC’s. VOCABULARY I know words. NARRATIVE SKILLS I tell stories. PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS I hear words.
