Dear Friends and Neighbors, The history of Greenwich House Music School (GHMS) stretches back to 1905, when we were founded in the settlement tradition with a mission to provide arts and cultural programs to help our community expand experiences and lead more fulfilling lives. The goal of GHMS is to teach students the beauty and transformative power of music, art and dance and make them lifelong lovers of the arts. GHMS serves the community through diverse programs, including private and group instruction in piano, violin, cello, viola, woodwinds, brass, guitar, drums, harp and voice, as well as early childhood programs in dance, visual arts and movement. The school is proud to offer over $40,000 each year in financial aid for students, based on merit and need. The faculty is comprised of seasoned professionals utilizing a curriculum that fosters the transition from early childhood programs into private and group instruction. Students are encouraged to maintain a connection with GHMS throughout their lives, returning year after year to continue their studies. We hope you will join us; exciting things are happening here!

Concerts and Events

For a full list of concert schedules visit greenwichhouse.org/music.

Uncharted

Uncharted is Greenwich House Music School’s very own annual spring concert series featuring first-time performances of new work and new collaborations. The series is intentionally designed to support artists and the work they want to do, and provide a safe space for them to take risks. Uncharted covers a broad selection of genres, from jazz to R&B, folk to pop, theater to world music. Highlights from the 2017 season include performances by Michael Mwenso and the Shakes, Aaron Diehl and Dan Tepfer, and Innov Gnawa (pictured right).

Student Recitals

Greenwich House Music School holds monthly open recitals for students on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. for senior students, and Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. for junior students. At GHMS, performing for family and friends is an integral part of every student’s music education. The May junior and senior recitals feature students who have demonstrated exceptional progress over the course of the year. All recitals take place in the Renee Weiler Concert Hall at Greenwich House Music School.

Partnerships

Greenwich House Music School is proud to partner with other non-profit organizations to produce concerts and bring new music to our community. Sound It Out, founded by series curator Bradley Bambarger in June 2012, hosts musicians from all across the jazz spectrum and further binds GHMS with the progressive scene across New York City. Past performers at Sound It Out include Nels Cline, Tim Berne, Angelica Sanchez and Wadada Leo Smith.

Through a new partnership with Creative Music Studio, GHMS holds workshops and performances led by CMS improvisation staff and with the CMS Improvisers Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Karl Berger. Unprecedented in its range and diversity, CMS is a phenomenon in the international music world, providing participants with the rare opportunity to interact personally with musical giants of the improvisation and musical theory on a daily basis. Greenwich House Music School is proud to host the Young Artist Series produced by the Stecher and Horowitz Foundation each year. The young pianists who perform have either won or placed in the prestigious New York International Piano Competition produced by the foundation. These concerts are presented free of charge.

Summer Arts Camp

With a long history of providing arts programming to New Yorkers, Summer Arts Camp at Greenwich House provides young people, ages 7-14, access to different artistic mediums to help them develop their own visual voices. Students work on collaborative and individual projects in disciplines such as architecture, painting and drawing, cartoon art, ceramics, printmaking and animation. All levels are welcome; the only requirement is an interest in the arts!

Counselor-in-Training Program

Depending on the weather, campers also take field trips to movie theaters, museums, galleries, parks and neighborhood attractions.

Space is limited. Interested teens are asked to apply for this program at greenwichhouse.org/camp.

Our oldest group of campers (13 and 14 year-olds who are in or will be entering high school) have the opportunity to work more independently from younger campers. Teens work on in-depth art projects, participate in counselor training workshops and begin to learn how to supervise younger campers. The program encourages maturity and independence in our oldest campers and provide an environment for growth and self-discovery.

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Greenwich House’s first art exhibition including ceramics was held in May, 1905. The “gallery” was a humble room within the House’s original building on Jones Street, just 75 feet from the present location of Greenwich House Pottery and its Jane Hartsook Gallery. The exhibition was primarily organized to show the community what activities the neighborhood youngsters had been up to. Over the next 112 years, the Pottery has maintained its tradition as a showcase of ceramics for the community. Though today’s Pottery has evolved from its early endeavors, a culture and spirit of exploration still remain. Greenwich House Pottery is an internationally recognized center for ceramics offering a diverse program of classes, exhibitions, residencies, lectures and workshop, all of which serve newcomers, amateurs and professional artists alike. Please join us to experience the uniqueness of our facility, community and the ceramic arts.
