1733 Harold Street House In a city full of shiny new subdivisions, a traditional American Foursquare home is a cultural treasure. This 1928 home, set on a quiet Montrose street, is filled with classic charm, thanks to features like antique wood floors, high ceilings, vintage light fixtures, Arts & Crafts-style wainscoting and woodburning fireplaces. The house was thoroughly updated in 2014-2016, with new HVAC, roof, electrical, foundation, plumbing and kitchen. Also in 2014, the roof was raised four feet and a spacious third floor with hardwoods and full bath was added. At the rear of the property, a two-car garage was built along with a comfortable carriage house for guests. For years the owners have prowled Historic Houston, antique shops and eBay looking for period details, such as the reclaimed wrought iron fencing around the front garden, Pennsylvania bluestone for paving the walkways, vintage brick, wood shutters, brass doorknobs, light fixtures and cabinet hardware. Found treasures were carefully cleaned and restored to working order. Combined with the modern amenities that have since been added to it, 1733 Harold Street will appeal to design-conscious buyers who also wish to live in one of Houston’s most vibrant neighborhoods. This is a home for people who love the character and craftsmanship of a historical property and wish to own a home that expresses their one-of-a-kind personality. It’s also a prime Montrose location, just a short stroll to The Menil Collection, Southland Hardware, Lanier Middle School, HEB, the Guild Shop and numerous restaurants (e.g. Common Bond, Paulie’s, Brasil, Little’s Oyster Bar, Amore, Barcelona, Hugo’s). With age comes value and history. This lovely home will be a truly memorable homestead for its next family. That old saying, “They don’t make them like they used to” has never been truer.
Architecture With its simple cube form, wide front porch, pyramidal hipped roof and center dormer, the Foursquare has an important place in the history of American domestic architecture. It was popular from around the mid-1890s to the late 1930s and often viewed as a response to the frou-frou revival styles, such as Queen Anne. Foursquare homes often incorporated “honest” woodwork that featured elements of the Prairie School and Craftsman styles, and they could be faced with brick, wood, stone or stucco.
Neighborhood Montrose is a primarily residential neighborhood, established in 1911, and famous within Houston and beyond as the cultural hub of the city. It is a demographically diverse area that retains many large and well-kept mansions, as well as Craftsman bungalows, small quirky apartment houses and, more recently, two- and three-story townhouses. The neighborhood has long been home to medical professionals as well as academics, performing and visual artists, attorneys and run-of-the-mill bohemians. Among the neighborhood’s myriad attractions are The Menil Collection, Houston Center for Photography and many of the city’s most celebrated restaurants and shops. Winlow Place is a deed-restricted subdivision within Montrose and home to many beautiful older homes, as well as Lanier Middle School. The subdivision was platted in 1923 and developed in 1925. Courtesy of its civic club, Winlow Place is widely known for its regular “Cocktails & Conversation” gatherings.
